WIZARDRY AND WITCHCRAFT IN A.D. 6TH CENTURAY ARABIA By Yasin T. al-Jibouri Within the borders of Najd, between the mountains of western Saudi Arabia and the Red Sea and immediately north of Yemen, there lies a plain about 40 miles wide in the coastal region of `Asir, 17o30’ east. This area is known as Tihama (or Tihamah), and it is there that two of the most famous of 6th century Arabia wizards lived. They were Rabi`ah of Banū Ghassān, better known as Sateeh, which means "the rooftop man”: He used to gaze at the stars as he was lying down on the rooftop, and Shaqq ibn Bāhilah al-Yamāni. The first was the most famous. He was one of the star gazers who slept very little during the night, observing the movements of the stars. Kings used to invite him to their palaces to listen to his predictions wo that he would tell them what their breasts were hiding. Whenever he articulated his predictions, he used to remain motionless, moving nothing but his eyes and tongue. One night, as he was gazing at the sky as usual, he noticed something quite out of the ordinary. A beam of light emanated from the direction of Hijāz, in the neighborhood of Mecca, that filled the heavens. Then he saw sparks emanating from the stars that seemed to collide with one another till they looked as though they sank into the earth. Sateeh was puzzled at the sight, and he was convinced that destruction was imminent. He remained speechless for one whole day. The next day he ordered his slaves to carry him to one of the highest mountains of `Asir, not far from where he used to live. He kept looking right and left. Soon light emanated and overwhelmed all other lights, extending over all lands. "Take me down,” said he to his slaves, "for I am puzzled on account of these lights. I have seen something momentous, and there is no doubt that I shall be departing from this world very soon.” When he was asked to explain what he
