DASH-ING TO RALLY SUPPORT AND ASSISTANCE FOR SPINA BIFIDA (SB) COMMUNITY PAG Shanti Jayaram, Vocational Service Chair

Spina bifida is a birth defect that happens when a baby's backbone (spine) does not form normally. As a result, the spinal cord and the nerves that branch out of it may be damaged. The term spina bifida comes from Latin and literally means "split" or "open" spine. Hydrocephalus is an abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles of the brain. At District 3300, Rotarians are engaging with the SB community and public to create awareness that these debilitating conditions which bring significant impediments to living a normal life may be prevented via dietary supplementation and life style changes.

We are completing 3 months of Rotary Year 2020/2021 now.

Surely it is a challenging period for all of us with lots of limitations due to the current Recovery Movement Control Order and the increasing cases due to the pandemic. It is a worrying state that many are being affected economically and emotionally. We are definitely experiencing some trying times!

At Rotary Club of Melawati, business is running as usual. As for our weekly meetings, we still meet physically on Wednesdays at our Rotary Melawati Community Centre by complying to high SOP standards and we also give options to our members to Zoom in. We are fortunate that more than 50% of our members participate in our weekly meetings either physically or via Zoom.

Our club has also been active in participating in an Inter District initiative - Synergy Friendship Alliance, which includes Rotary Clubs from 9 countries namely India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Indonesia, Afghanistan and us from Malaysia. Our group organises monthly talks. We are truly honoured to be in this Synergy Friendship Alliance group with these esteemed clubs.

Besides that, we have events that our members joined in such as the World Rivers Day celebration.

As for projects, there are several major projects in the pipeline where currently needs analyses are being carried out by their committees mostly under our Community Service. We hope to announce more details on these projects when more clarity is established.

Whereas on smaller scale projects, we keep looking out for current needs within our Melawati vicinity.

During Malaysia Day celebration we wanted very much to recognise the unsung heroes of our nation and we managed to identify the right group through our Rotarian Col (R) Somphong Klop. It was truly a memorable and meaningful project whereby we managed to provide basic groceries for 15 destitute Veteran soldiers.

We are very proud of members like PAG Raja Renno who delivers wheelchairs to the needy. This month alone he had managed to deliver 8 wheelchairs. These wheelchairs were donated by LDS from United States and we deliver to each recipient after careful assessment and measurement being done to ensure patients' comfort and safety.

And we look forward to welcoming October as it will be District Governor’s visit to our club on the 21st October 2020.

SERVICE ABOVE SELF

Raja Renno recollected an episode when he fitted a handicapped young woman for a chair in Melaka. She was sitting on the floor of her family home. Her father was also on the floor, with a broken leg. When this young woman saw Raja arrive with her new wheelchair, she exclaimed with joy, "My new wheelchair! I have a wheelchair!" Her smile and many expressions of gratitude followed.

Since 2013, LDS Charities has donated hundreds of wheelchairs to needy recipients in Malaysia. The pillar of strength behind this noble effort is our very own Past Assistant Governor Raja Renno, who is the Chairman of the District Action Group on Wheelchair Distribution.

Driving to Penang, Ipoh, Melaka and around Kuala Lumpur has been his ritual for the past five years since the project was initiated in 2015. He has assessed, fitted and guided hundreds of new wheelchair recipients. Not only is he a trained assessor, but he is also a compassionate, thoughtful person. He treats recipients with loving concern, and helps them understand their new chair and the advantages and limitations involved.

There was a story shared through a group about a man who bought wheelchairs for disabled children. He said he felt real joy when he started to leave and one of the kids grabbed his leg. He gently tried to free his legs but the child stared at his face and held his legs tightly. He bent down and asked the child, "Do you need anything else?" The child's answer changed his life completely.

The child said, "I want to remember your face so that when I meet you in heaven, I will be able to recognize you and thank you once again".

Raja Renno said that was exactly his experience for the past 5 years! The smiles kept him going.

It all started in July 2014 when Raja Renno who was the then President of Rotary Club of Melawati began working with LDS Charities. He had identified several disabled

people in need of assistance, yet they had no financial ability to obtain a wheelchair. Following that, Raja Renno arranged for 25 Rotary Clubs to provide wheelchair assessment and also training for some 50 wheelchair assessors. They are responsible for assessing needs and placing the wheelchairs. The trained Rotary Club assessors have provided wheelchairs to more than 650 individuals throughout West Malaysia since January 30, 2015.

Today Tasputra Perkim and also International Medical University (IMU) have joined in as champion NGOs when the demand for the wheelchairs increased. However, in terms of allocation of wheelchairs, Rotary still manages 50% of the number.

SERVICE MINDED SUPERHERO Rtn Ooi Soo Kang International Service Chair Evan Burell is a member of the Rotary Club of Turramurra in D9685 in Sydney, Australia. He was also an active Rotaractor prior to joining Rotary.

Evan exemplifies his credo “Let’s have fun in Rotary” and it is this message that has him passionately promoting Rotary’s story via his active social media presence.

"Do you wear your Rotary pin? Is your pin always on the lapel of your suit, blouse, jacket or polo shirt? Is it there because you are proud to be a Rotarian? Anywhere we go, people should see the pin and know who we are and what we do. We should wear our Rotary pin to raise awareness of what the pin means and represents. Having that pin on your lapel changes you, it makes you think more before you speak and before you act."

Evan further reiterated that as Rotarians, we are here to help. All of us should be ready to talk about Rotary. When someone asks us about that pin, we should be ready to answer them. What is Rotary? What does Rotary do?

These are questions that each of us as Rotarians should always be prepared to answer. Our primary goal should be to inspire the people we meet to embrace the principles upon which our lives as Rotarians are based.

Evan had always projected Rotary image with a positive bang. For example at a Rotary convention in Sydney Evan walked around holding a long stick with his phone attached, taking hundreds of “Service Above Selfies” with convention attendees. In Rotary Year 2013-2014 he was known to have taught the then RI President Ron Burton how to dance to Korean singer Psy’s “Gangnam Style” a few years back. Evan proves that Rotary isn’t all business!

A GIFT OF LOVE PUT TOGETHER BY CLUBS IN TWO COUNTRIES

Make someone smile whenever you can. You never know how much of a difference you could be making in their life at the moment.

This was an emotional episode at our partner Club - Rotary Coimbatore Midtown Limb Centre. Under the Global Grant project, RC Melawati and RC Coimbatore Midtown have donated a limb to a young man, Abeesh from Kanyakumari District.

Following a rail accident, Abeesh's leg was amputated a year and a half ago. After completing the Gait training, he managed to walk on his own.

The smile on his face was priceless.

Most times we take the simple act of walking for granted, but to Abeesh walking is a gift. A gift from The Rotary Foundation through the efforts put in with much love from Rotary Club of Coimbatore Midtown and Rotary Club of Melawati. PAG Dr Selva Kumar, Rtn Ratnam and Rtn Rajes made the contribution for RC Melawati.

OUR YOUNG SCIENTISTS DID IT AGAIN! Rtn Col (Rtd) Somphong Klop, Youth Service Chair

Our Interactors made it again! And this time by clinching gold and winning the Young Scientist Award 2020 at the International Invention and Trade Expo (ITE), London!

The young inventors are Yuvika Mahaganapathy, 10, Kailesh Saravana, 11, and Kavisha Nagarajan, 11. Yuvika and Kavisha are our Interactors. They won gold for their invention called “My Soil My Plant”,

This award is an addition to the many awards that this group of bright inventors have received recently. Just last month, their invention won them gold at the International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada (iCAN) 2020 and silver at the International Festival of Engineering Science and Technology in Tunisia. They have also won a local award this year by getting first place at the Malaysia Young Scientist Conference & Exhibition last month.

Club Highlights

Five Rotary clubs in Kuala Lumpur held a Joint Meeting with a special guest sharing about Managing Stress during Covid-19 RC Melawati together with RC Cheras, RC Bandar Utama, RC Pudu and RC Metro KL had a Joint Meeting on 17 September 2020.

District Governor KS Teoh was also present.

The guest speaker, Rtn Michelle Cheah who is the Lead Trainer for District Action Group on Autism, shared some tips on how to manage stress during the pandemic.

She said that the way to de-stress is to detach and to let go of things you cannot control.

Rtn Michelle also said in doing service work, it is important to remain objective and detached from the issues and challenges that affect those of whom we are helping and supporting.

CLUB'S MONTHLY 'GOTONG-ROYONG' COINCIDED WITH SEEGEM'S AGM The first Saturday of the month is the Club's gotong-royong day at the River Three Park.

0n 5 September 2020, a few members joined the gotong-royong cleaning the river, plogging, working on the garden as well as composting the dried leaves and twigs.

In the afternoon, SeeGEM's 6th Annual General Meeting was held at Rotary Melawati Community Centre.

Doing our part in easing the burdens of our army veterans and the refugees

Members of the Rotary Club of Melawati presented essential domestic items to 15 Armed Forces veterans. We hope that the assistance will help them cope and ease their hardship during this difficult time. Also present was YBhg Major General (Retired) Dato' Haji Mohd Zahar bin Haji Hashim, the President of Kelab Veteran Risik Malaysia (KVRM). Rtn Rajes Ratnam helped to arrange for the groceries.

During MCO RC Melawati responded to the request made from 3 different refugee communities. 50 families from the Afghan community were selected based on the family status. Groceries were carefully planned out to the actual requirements of the families without compromising on religious limitations. Special effort was ensured to have the groceries packed and delivered with the help of transport from RC Damansara to the families at their residence.

The Club has tightened the measures in observing Covid19 SOP compliance through members signing/scanning in and recording the temperature.

The number of attendees is locked at 20 pax for better social distancing. No handshakes, fist bumps or hugs are allowed and this was being reminded continuously.

Attendees wear face masks and they use the available hand sanitisers stationed strategically at the registration counter, meeting table and pantry.

Club Admin has taken the needful steps in ensuring food served are pre-packed. Doors are left open for ventilation and the washroom is maintained well. Attendees are requested to flush the toilet bowl with the lid down at the washroom.

RMCC is the best practice ground now for adherence and this helps to cultivate the habit of staying safe. We have Dr Selva Kumar and Dr Premela who are our in-house frontliners to regularly share updates and tips in managing the pandemic.

CELEBRATING WORLD RIVERS DAY In conjunction with World Rivers Day, a celebration that highlights the many values of rivers and strives to increase public awareness worldwide was held on 26 September 2020. The celebration was held concurrently at 30 different locations in Selangor. The event and the launch of Friends of River (FOR) initiative were broadcasted LIVE on FB.

RIVER THREE PARK, TAMAN MELAWATI President Siva Kumar Raghavan, CP Dr Navin Patel, Rtn Col (Rtd) Somphong Klop and Rtn Salina Hussein were at River Three Park, Sungai Klang in Taman Melawati to celebrate World Rivers Day. Friends of River Initiative (FoR) at Taman Melawati River Three Park was launched and one of the highlights was the Arts@RiverThree! Conceptualized by the Founder, Kennedy Michael, one of the murals showcased biodiversity (living species) found in Taman Melawati River Three Park. .

ROTARY PEACE PARK, BESTARI JAYA Past District Governor Siti Subaidah officiated the opening of World Rivers Day accompanied by Assistant Governor Kamarul Ariff and President Bharat Ghorasia who is also the Co-Chair of District Action Group on Environmental Sustainability (DAGES) who joined in the celebration. Members of DAGES and Rotarians and family members from more than 12 clubs joined the celebration. PDG Siti Subaidah planted a mango tree at the site to commemorate the event. Besides tree-planting there were canoe polo challenge, plogging, cycling and various other nature appreciation activities.

Life is like the river, sometimes it sweeps you gently along and sometimes the rapids come out of nowhere. Rivers know this: there is no hurry.

HOW ROTARY HEALED ME AND CHANGED MY LIFE

It was the year 2000 when I joined the Rotary organization. I had just lost my husband to an illness not long before that when PP Rema Paul, a friend of many years, told me about Rotary and

Over the last 20 years, I have thoroughly enjoyed being a Rotarian. Apart from the service that I get to do through the Rotary organization, I have also forged many beautiful friendships with my club members and fellow

suggested that I join.

Rotarians over the years, which till today, remain rock solid. The level of warmth and comfort that I enjoy with some of the members today, beats even the relationship one may have with family members. Such is our closeness.

Feeling exhausted and totally burnt-out from being a care giver to an ill spouse for many years, I didn’t think I was ready to take on anything, let alone helping other people. I felt that I needed help myself. No matter how strong you think you may be, nothing really prepares you to deal with the loss of your spouse, especially when you’re left with 3 young children to care for. Rema convinced me to join anyway. And I am glad I did.

As I got involved in Rotary and what it stood for, I found myself on the road to self-recovery. The more I got involved in helping those who were in need, even in a small way, the more I found myself on the path to healing. It was then that I fully realized how doing service can heal and rejuvenate oneself. As they say ‘When you are good to others, you are best to yourself’.

I believe Rotary has changed me for the better. It has opened my eyes, heart and mind to the many possibilities of how much good you can do to help people around you.

You only need the willingness to do so.

Many think that you need to be rich or influential to help people in need. You don’t. All you need is a heart with empathy and the willingness to devote a little bit of your time and effort to reach out to those who are less fortunate than you. And when you radiate those vibes on how you are trying to help those in need, somehow, the funds that are needed usually find their way to you. Such is the law of the universe.

District 3300 Malaysia continued with its Vibrant Club Leaders Training Series nationwide in Seremban on 12 September 2020 and in Ipoh on 20 September 2020. The focus of VCLTS is to move clubs to become vibrant.

Participants at the sessions should learn and apply what they learn to make their clubs more vibrant - by being stronger, more energized, and visible through aggressive membership drive, effective public image, and contribution to The Rotary Foundation.

ABOUT ROTARY THE ROOTS OF ROTARY’S POLIO ERADICATION EFFORTS In 1979 when James L. Bomar Jr., then RI president, put the first drops of vaccine into a child’s mouth, he ceremonially launched the Philippine poliomyelitis immunization effort. Rotary’s first Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grant project was underway.

Bomar and Enrique M. Garcia, the country’s minister of health, had earlier signed an agreement committing Rotary International and the government of the Philippines to a joint multiyear effort to immunize about 6 million children against polio, at a cost of about $760,000.In a 1993 interview, Bomar reminisced about the trip. He recalled how the brother of one of the children he had immunized tugged on his pant leg to get his attention and said, “Thank you, thank you, Rotary.”

The project’s success led Rotary to make polio eradication a top priority. Rotary launched PolioPlus in 1985 and was a founding member of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988.

NIGERIA'S 'POLIO HERO' IS ONE OF TIME'S 100 MOST INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE Dr. Tunji Funsho, chair of Rotary’s Nigeria National PolioPlus Committee, joined 100 pioneers, artists, leaders, icons, and titans as one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People.

TIME announced its 2020 honorees during a 22 September television broadcast on ABC, recognizing Funsho for his instrumental leadership and work with Rotary members and partners to achieve the eradication of wild polio in the African region. He is the first Rotary member to receive this honor for work toward eradicating polio.
