MAYFIELD DEPOT
MAYFIELD, MANCHESTER

HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Mayfield Station was built in the 1910, replacing the former printworks owned by Thomas Hoyle. As demands grew the station served as an extention to London Road Station to alleviate pressure in the 1940s, however it suffered damage from a parachute bomb. The station was then reopened in 1970 as a mailing distribution centre. Royal Mail began to utlilise roadways to deliver due to wider route accessibility. This lead to the Royal Mail moving out of Mayfield, which then lay dormant for 16 years. Since then the Mayfield area has became a blindspot, a new chapter is waiting to be written.

STUDIO 2.1.1- SITE
SOCIO-ECONOMIC This is a map annotated to show the main areas of Manchester and Salford. We can see a general pattern of how people move around the city. As train stations are situated on the edge of city centre, people generally move into a direction towards the center. It is almost as if the stations are served as a taps, pouring all the people into the center.
However places such as the Etihad stadium, Old Trafford and Salford Quay are interesting because they are not part of the center of Manchester and people travel to these places because for a specific reason. Therefore I learnt this can be a way to bring people into Mayfield.

METROLINK MAP
The transport connections to the Mayfield area are mainly located at Manchester Piccadilly station, as is the closest. People can catch connections from every side of Greater Manchester. In terms of permeability around the area, pedestrian circulation is dictated by the built structures, causing the access to Mayfield very awkward. Therefore I believe having direct access from inside of Picadilly station will solve some problems. BUS BOUNDARY MAP

MACRO & MICRO CLIMATE According to the data, Manchester suffers from high amounts of rainfall and strong winds from the Atlantic ocean on the west side of the country. Therefore the risk of flooding at the site is high, and idealy needs to provide shelter for people to carry on with normal activities. Also since the buildings on the north side of the site are higher and lower at the south, being at the northern hemisphere it captures alot of sunlight in the middle, and higher buildings also help reflect the sunlight back.

STUDIO 2.1.1- SITE
ELEVATOR PITCH The area of Mayfield lacked spaces that welcome the public with open arms, therefore as Mayfield station became redundant the whole area lost its public appeal, becoming a blindspot in the city. Currently the city of Manchester lacks spaces for modern art exhibitions and installations, therefore I think this area offers a perfect opportunity to bring modern art into the city, and a good opportunity to revitalise the area. It would be ideal for an organisation such as TATE to occupy Mayfield because they have galleries around the UK; it would be a shame if the city of Manchester never got one. Although the area is positioned awkwardly in the city center, its geographical features still has a lot to offer to the city today. The river and its vegetation around could bring residences closer to nature, which is a rare quality due to urban development in the city centre. Its unique heritage represented by the remains of the Mayfield Depot is exciting for visitors. Therefore I want to create a piece of architecture in Site A that harmonises with these qualities, at the same time can transform and adapt to enable any kind of activity for people who are willing to express themselves, wether it is through fine art or films.
Tate is an institution that houses the United Kingdom’s national collection of British art and international modern and contemporary art in a network of 4 art museums. It is not a government institution, but its main sponsor is the UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

EXPERIM ENTS OTHER OPPORTUNITIES EXPLORED 1 2 Is similar to the final approach, but instead there is a huge gap cut out of the wall for people to go through to the riverside. However the disconnection between the gallery and workshops interrupts the flow of the programmes. 3 4 Tries to blend in as much as possible with the forms around the site. By taking the forms from the river and dividing it into sections I can put the different programmes into each one. The idea was Inspired by architects who likes to take elements of nature into their design, architectects such as Alvar Aalto and Frank Lloyd Wright. However this idea does not suit my programmes too well, because there is only 1 way of moving through the building, and does not provide any supporting structure for big installations.

ADAPTABLE STRUCTURE
The potential needs of a built form must be recognised, predicting the uses and changes overtime is an important factor in Price’s design. Similar to a basillica, with an essential nave and 2 aisles, allowing spaces to have hierachy based on their position within the 15 frames. These different types of spaces can be interperated as boxes that can be moved around. The rotating staircases controls movement inside the building, directing people to specific programmes.
The crane on the top that could move along the 15 frames. With the help of this crane it can build boxes at different sizes to accomodate a certain programmes. The staircases can the be rotated to connect people from the ground floor. The elevators which are inside the main supports of the structure also helps get people into the different programmes.

INTERACTION & LANDSCAPE By mapping the different programmes onto the site, I can see how the arrangement interacts with its surroundings. For example, how does the scale of the building affect circulation? How I could cut holes in the walls to enable new routes for visitors to explore and etc.
