ABOUT THE BRIEF Hong Kong Foody is an illustrated guide to the city’s culinary world. The guide aims to show readers a less commercial side of Hong Kong, introducing less known restaurants to tourists and encouraging them to experience the city. The guide comes with two figurines the readers could bring with them around the city when they’re on their foody adventure!
RESEARCH The style of the images within the guidebook was inspired by Japanese mascots’ cartoonish nature and bright colours. For research, I looked into different contemporary illustrators including ones from Hong Kong to see how they have applied their illustration onto other products.
VISUAL INVESTIGATION Initially the guidebook was going to have a broader focus on Hong Kong, including landmarks, transport, and food. The idea was narrowed down to food later on since Hong Kong’s culinary world was pretty broad on its own; I was also better at illustrating food than landscapes. Experimentation on medium and content was made before executing the final product.
CREATING THE DELIVERABLES Each image in the guidebook is inked and coloured by hand; they are then scanned in for editing and captioning on Photoshop. As for the figurines, they are made out of sculpy and coloured with acrylic paint. The final publication is bound using the Japanese binding technique.
RANGE Possible merchandise my illustration could be applied to would be travel themed since the guidebook would be brought along when the reader is going to Hong Kong. They could also be applied to kitchenware since my images are food related as well.
