SUCCESS STORY Dr. Zubin Nalladaru

Gifted Hands with Healing Touch

ubin Dr. Z

aru allad

The medical profession is one of the few pursuits where the noble ideals of charity and usefulness come together in the service of others. Dr. Zubin Nalladaru, Cardiac Surgeon at the City Hospital, Dubai, is a proof of this. He has dedicated his life to the care and curing of his patients with his healing hands. He has imbued his expertise with compassion and a genuine desire to serve those in need. He has inspired many aspiring doctors to follow in his footsteps. His research work has had a far-reaching influence in his field. So how has this cultured, courteous and quintessential Doctor managed to do all this and maintain a lead position? We ask him‌

How do you typically start your day?

What is your top personal and success mantra at work?

I get up at 6 am. I start and end my day with prayers to God to give me the strength to treat my patients in the best possible way and pay gratitude to Him for everything he has given me in this life – my profession, my family, my friends , my patients. Then I go through my to-do list for the day including surgeries, meetings, etc. After that I do a quick 30 minute workout which includes some yoga stretches followed by either high intensity interval training or weights.

Have faith in God; work hard, do the best you can and leave the end result to him. Not to have attachment to the outcome or end result.

What is your greatest dream professionally?

N

Describe your work briefly.

I also have a liking for research so in my spare time I write scientific papers and interesting case reports for publication in international medical journals. I also lecture the medical fraternity regarding the latest advances in cardiac surgery. I am interested in the prevention of heart disease so I deliver talks for lay people to create awareness and what steps to take to prevent it. I am a voracious reader so I keep abreast of the latest development in my field. I also read fiction and books on spirituality.

Coffee.

Then I am out of the house.

My job is to heal broken hearts. A typical day at the hospital starts at 8 am with rounds for the admitted patients to plan their treatment for the day and troubleshoot if required (referring to other specialties, etc.) This is followed by one or sometimes two open heart surgeries or thoracic surgeries (surgeries on the lung, chest wall, diaphragm). Each surgery takes 4-5 hours on an average. Following this I see patients in the outpatient department. This is followed by evening rounds. If I am on call I have to deal with emergency cases through the night.

4

Throughout your workday, what is the one thing you cannot do without?

Cardiac surgery is expensive and the poor population in India cannot afford it. My dream is to team up with like-minded individuals and do charity surgeries in rural India.

How do you see the medicine industry progressing in future in Dubai/UAE? The UAE is a great place to live and work in. It is a melting pot of so many nationalities and cultures. The leaders of UAE have vision and are far- sighted. I see medical tourism developing in leaps and bounds so we expect an increase in number of tourists who would like to undergo medical treatment and surgeries in UAE. Also we have the latest technology and equipment available here as well as the expertise which was not the case earlier. Also with medical insurance made compulsory all segments of society will have access to medical treatment.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN ENTREPRENEUR Tehruna Patel, the owner of Traditions Trading L.L.C., has an eye for all things chic and pretty. She says, "Life is a gift and it offers us the privilege, opportunity and responsibility to give something back by becoming more." We ask her...

How do you typically start your day? Every morning starts with a short prayer to God, yoga stretches, reading the newspaper, having a healthy breakfast; conversing with parents who live overseas, followed by daily executive routines. Describe your work in a few lines. My work involves developing new business opportunities, marketing and net-working with oil companies, banks, multinational companies, hotels and government departments, for below-the-line advertising; exhibition peripherals; hotel supplies; fags; promo items and much more…Our website (www.traditionstrading.com) details the activities that are varied. Our Wholesale division for the educational toys for junior kids, is yet another activity. What is your top personal and success mantra at work?

If you could trade lives with anyone for one entire day, who would it be and why? If I had the opportunity to trade lives with anyone for a day, it would be Bill Gates who is one of the world’s leading philanthropists and has given more than US$ 28 billion towards initiatives that predominantly focus on health, education, and economic development at a Global level. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are doing a wonderful job. A day at their Foundation would be helpful in understanding the power of putting one’s hard earned wealth to good use. This is something my husband and I also belive in and keep doing in whatever way we can to make a difference in the lives of the underprivileged. If you could have your pick of superpowers what would you choose? WEALTH and COMPASSION - to be able to help people in their most difficult times …without being noticed.

My personal mantra is – “to remain genuine and be the best person that I can.” My work mantra is – “to be professional and responsible and lead by example.” Throughout your workday, what is the one thing you cannot do without? Talking with my husband! Your favorite hangout in the UAE. My favorite place is Abu Dhabi Shopping Mall - a spacious, modern and airconditioned facility in the heart of the city. I visit it with family and friends, whenever I can, to savour delicacies offered by various restaurants, exercise, and watch movies. What more can one ask for?

These interactions have added many memorable moments in my life.” In 1982, Shirrin married Roomi and settled down in Dubai. After a few years, in 1991, she joined The Dubai Duty Free (DDF); the world’s number one single operator whose retail turnover, last year, grew exponentially to US$ 1.85 billion.

Every day is a step forward and that really helps me to make a difference and keeps me going.” Shirrin and Roomi are blessed with two children Okhshan and Nasha, who excel at Golf and are currently doing well in their respective professions. Being humble, Shirrin expresses her fulsome praise for Liz, who has been a part of their family for 26 years and grateful for the services rendered by her towards her family, especially, when her children were growing up. A devoted Zoroastrian, Shirrin uses every occasion to contribute towards the community. No person returns empty handed when they approach Shirrin for help. Jal Bharucha was born in London, to Drs. Noshir and Kooki Bharucha who were doing their postgraduate medical training in the early 1950’s. Upon completion, of their training, they returned to Mumbai, which is where Jal grew up and completed his university education. Thereafter, Jal went back to London to start a career in banking, as a trainee, with Barclays Bank, and progressed through the organisation. During his tenure, he was transferred to New York, which period was immensely enjoyable, more so, because his wife Hutoxi [nee Kandawalla] who hails from Karachi, used to live in New York prior to them getting married and her moving to London in their home. Jal and Hutoxi have been in the U.A.E since October 2005, and have enjoyed every second both professionally and socially. Now sadly, time has come to move to Geneva which stint they are really looking forward to as Jal’s current employer National Bank of Abu Dhabi has transferred him there. They will, no doubt miss living in the U.A.E

Scriptural Reflections The Dignity of Women

A

ll religions in the world cherish the dignity of women, but the potential of women to transform society has been ignored over centuries. As a matter of fact, it is from the mother that a child learns to love and respect others, builds relationships with others, and gains knowledge about the world and spirituality. A mother has the ability to connect her child with the Supreme, so the connector to the Divine should be held in great esteem and treated with utmost respect. However, over the years it has been the practice to eulogize the achievements of men, praise their valour and sing their ballads. Rarely has there been any acknowledgment of the contribution of women who consistently and devotedly nurtures and guides humanity. SynergyZ brings you interesting annotations from various faiths on the ‘Dignity of Women.’

mind (BRAHMACHARYA) and Non-possessiveness (APARIGRAH). Judaism

Bahá’í Faith

In the Jewish religion both men and women are equal but have different roles. While men take up services in According to the teachings of His Holiness Bahá’u’lláh, the world the Synagogue, women for example are responsible for of humanity has two wings – one is women and the other men. the preservation of maintaining a Kosher home, lighting Not until both wings are equally developed can the bird fly. the candles and ensuring the house is ready for festivals. Should one wing remain weak, the flight is impossible. Hence, according to Bahá’í Faith, both men and women are equal. Sikhism Buddhism In Buddhist religion, men and women are considered equally useful to society. Both are expected to share equal responsibility and conduct their duties with equal dedication. The wife is considered a friend, a companion and a partner to the husband. She is expected to acquaint herself with her husband’s trade, business or industry so that she is in a position to manage his affairs in his absence.

In Sikhism a mother embodies the spiritual attributes of compassion, selflessness, courage and forgiveness. She is capable of recognizing and strengthening her children’s inherent spirituality through the thoughtful practice of dharam or faith. Her role is like a Guru. A Guru is one who takes people from spiritual darkness (Gu) to spiritual light (Ru). In the Guru Granth Sahibji, the mother is described as one’s first Guru in life.

Christianity Jesus Christ always showed the greatest respect for woman and treated women with compassion, grace and dignity. He re-established woman in her full dignity as a human being before God and before men. Hinduism According to Hindu religion a woman has the same religious and spiritual freedom as a man. Neither is woman superior to man, nor is man superior to woman. Both are perfect halves to make a perfect whole. There are Goddesses too in Hindu religion who are worshipped in many forms such as Durga for strength, Saraswati for wisdom and Laxmi for wealth. Islam Qur’an was revealed 1400 years ago, and with it came the era that revolutionized the status of women. Islam recognizes that it is not the gender, race and culture that enables one to excel in the eyes of God, it is piety and good works. Prophet Muhammed encouraged education as a means of defeating ignorance so that both men and women may be beneficial to a wider society and its development. Jainism In Jainism men and women are considered as equals. Both are expected to play their common roles of helping each other, working for the common welfare of humanity and protecting the environment. Women in Jainism are treated within the same code of ethics as that prescribed for men, those being - Virtues of nonviolence (AHIMSA), Truth (SATYA), Non-stealing (ACHAURYA), Purity of body and

Zoroastrianism In Zoroastrianism and ancient Iran women enjoyed a level of gender equality unmatched anywhere in the ancient world. There were female emperors and rulers. They had important positions in the courthouse, ministries, military, state and all types of administrations. In prayers too women are mentioned and remembered equally with men and they are referred to as masters of the house, well educated, leaders of countries and well advanced in thoughts, words and deeds. There are feminine divine beings too like AvanYazad. Conclusion: If society wishes to end violence againt women then religious, civic and community leaders will have to work together to prevent acts of violence againt women and mobilise the compassion of religious communities to help care for and heal survivors of violence. Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata 1839-1904 12

June, 2017

Gavashni

A TRIBUTE ON 178TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF JAMSETJI – THE TATA WHO NEVER WENT AWAY Jamsetji Tata known as the Industrialist, nationalist, humanist and founder of the House of Tata, was the first child and only son of Nusserwanji Tata, the scion of a family of Parsi priests. He was born on March 3, 1839 in Navsari in Gujarat, and joined his father in Mumbai at the age of 14. He studied at Elphinstone College and passed out as a Green Scholar. The liberal education he received fueled in him a lifelong admiration for academics and a love for reading. At the age of 19, he married Heerabai, also from a priestly family, the daughter of Kursetji Deboo. In 1874, Jamsetji Tata started the Central India Spinning, Weaving and Manufacturing Company, later named the Empress Mills, in Nagpur. Introducing modern machinery, he revolutionised the production of cotton yarn. A model employer, he ushered in many labour reforms like accident compensation and pension funds. A pioneer, patriot and a visionary, Jamsetji Tata channelised the wealth he created to enrich India. The three significant projects whose seeds he sowed were: The Indian Institute of Science (IIS), Bangalore, a hydroelectric project in Mumbai and the Iron and Steel Works in Jamshedpur. The IIS was his great vision to take India to the threshold of the 20th century through a world-class educational institution. Torrential rainwater gushing down the Western Ghats near Mumbai inspired him to think of building a reservoir at the

height of 3,000 feet to speed the flow of water via giant pipelines down the mountains and let the artificial waterfall turn turbines to generate energy. Thus was born India’s first hydro-electric power station. Thomas Carlyle’s famous lecture in Manchester: “The nation which gains control of iron soon gains control of gold” set Jamsetji Tata thinking of building an iron and steel plant in India. With his spirit of entrepreneurship, he obtained the first prospecting license from the British at the age of 60, and went to the United States to seek technical advice. But Jamsetji Tata did not live to see his dream fulfilled. He died in 1904 in Germany. However, after having explored the field and chosen the technical experts, he handed over the scheme to his sons before he passed away. It was left to his sons and successors to fulfill Jamsetji Tata’s dream. In 1902, five years before the site of the steel plant was finally located at Sakchi, he wrote from abroad to his son, Dorab Tata, of what his dream city of steel should look like: “Be sure to lay wide streets planted with shady trees, every other of a quick growing variety. Be sure that there is plenty of space for lawns and gardens. Reserve large areas for football and hockey and parks.” Later, the clean and green city of Jamshedpur became a reality. On January 2, 1919, the then Viceroy, Lord Chelmsford, visited the Iron and Steel Works at Sakchi, and announced Jamshedpur as the new

name of the town in memory of Jamsetji Tata. The elegant Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, completed in 1903 was his gift to Mumbai – the jewel in his entrepreneurial crown and an iconic landmark. His goal was to enable young Indians to acquire higher education at international academic centres. He, therefore, set up the JN Tata Endowments in 1892. In his last days, he urged his cousin, Ratan D Tata and close members of his family to carry forward the work he had started. “Go on doing my work and increasing it, but if you cannot, do not lose what we have already done,” were his words of advice to them. They not only continued his admirable work, but also strengthened and expanded it. India and generations of Indians have reaped the fruits of the seed Jamsetji Tata sowed. In a tribute JRD Tata said: “The wealth gathered by Jamsetji Tata and his sons in half a century of industrial pioneering formed but a minute fraction of the amount by which they enriched the nation. The whole of that wealth is held in trust for the people and used exclusively for their benefit. The cycle is thus completed; what came from the people has gone back to the people many times over.” By: Meher Bhesania

The event was a success and attended by over 35 members. Porus Guzder, President WZCCME, in his opening address, welcomed the gathering and shared the vision for the year 2017, assuring members that 2017 will be yet another productive year just like 2016, and an array of value based programs shall be offered to members. Support shall be extended to young talent to channel their creative spirit towards entrepreneurship. Reflecting on 2016 programs, Porus said, whether it was the Wills and Probate program; the Training Skills program; or the Dubai Pravasi Yatra program … they were all very successful programs conducted by WZCCME. He was particularly pleased with the performance of the DPY program, as it turned WZCCME into an engine of growth, with several businessmen returning to their destinations with business leads in their pockets. To paraphrase an old saying – “the only constant in life is change,” Porus said, that the theme of the evening’s program was founded on ‘Change’ as certain changes are expected to be implemented in the UAE, starting next year. These are in keeping with the fast pace of growth in this region. The words that resonated most from his speech were – “We will keep what is good, fix what is wrong and unlock a great performance in 2017.” He, thanked those who were present at the meeting and said, togetherness is an important ingredient of WZCC and together we shall achieve a lot. He concluded by saying – “coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success” – Henry Ford. The speakers for the evening were introduced by Jasmine Tavadia. VAT: The most awaited talk on “VAT” was delivered by Girish Chand of MCA Consultancy. Girish explained the concept of VAT, its implications, and how businessmen should prepare themselves as VAT will be implemented at the rate of 5% in the UAE, starting Jan 1, 2018. His presentation was impressive as it contained illustrative examples of how VAT will affect various sectors and work as the general consumption tax and apply to majority of transactions in goods and services as well as areas of imports/ exports. The interest could be gauged from the volley of questions fielded by members that related to non-payment of VAT, existing/pending contracts, free zone regulations and the extent of jurisdiction. Some questions were too early to be asked, so Girish explained, that the impending legislation once in place, would provide better clarity in all areas. Showcasing of ‘Imperial Avenue’ property – by Shapoorji Pallonji Group:

Most members at the meeting were amazed by the presentation and approached Rayomand Dastur, Director Sales and Marketing, SP Group, who was present at the event and Harneet Singh with their queries. Imperial Avenue offers an excellent opportunity to all members either for living or investment and should not be missed! Immigration: The last presentation was a talk on Immigration. It was by Ms. Rashmi Vijay Deputy General Manager of WWICS - a world leader in immigration assistance. Rashmi touched upon the options for emigrating to Australia, UK, USA and Canada available through self-funding program and Investors program with government/private sector. She also spoke on best countries to buy second passport, residency and recommended certain names in the Caribbean. “Many families in the world, are keen to buy a second citizenship that offers them a whole lot of benefits, from visa-free travel to better quality of life,” she said. Several queries were raised by members after her presentation and all of them were answered professionally. Jimmy Dadrewalla, Global CFO, of Advanta Seeds Ltd., was invited to say a few words so Jimmy introduced himself to the members. Jimmy comes with a wide experience in driving organisation growth, corporate finance, international tax, Insurance & audits and has recently moved from the UK. An announcement on Homai Bilimoria’s Food catering service in Dubai was made at the meeting and her Menu Cards were distributed to members. Homai was present at the meeting to interact with members.

Shapoorji Pallonji Group, whose name is synonymous with the construction industry, and have been in the GCC for over 50 years, made an impressive presentation by showing a film on their state-ofthe-art property ‘Imperial Avenue’ - a luxury residential project which is under construction in the Downtown Burj District, in Dubai.

The engaging sessions ended with a vote of thanks by Jasmine Tavadia.

Harneet Singh, the Assistant General Manager, Sales and Marketing, SP Group said that, the 45-storey residential tower will offer one to four bedroom apartments; three to five bedroom villas; and 4 and 5 bedroom penthouses surrounded by amenities with infinity pools, outdoor kids play area, recreation area, private movie hall, family pool and more… The sustainability features of solar panelled roof top, grey water harvesting and 6D BIM for facility management will be added benefits.

The evening ended with networking over refreshments indicating when strength meets speed you grow faster.

This was followed by felicitation ceremony for the speakers by Meher Bhesania (Founding Director, WZCCME), Jimmy Kotwal – Senior Executive Emirates, and Firdaus Irani, WZCCME Chapter Chair - UAE.

WZCCME completes 14 successful years in the UAE

WZCCME, this year, completes 14 successful in the UAE. The journey has been exhilarating. Several business delegations came to Dubai; umpteen number of high profile events have taken place; two Global AGMs of WZCC have been hosted - one in 2009 along with the World Zoroastrian Congress and the other in 2014 along with the Enterprise Dubai event. With a view to empowering youth, WZCCME, this year, decided to embark on a new program of creating Youth Sub-Committees under the Youth Director, WZCCME. In line with the objective, a circular was sent out to community members inviting youth in the age group of 25 to 38 years to apply for the three positions and handle the three areas - leadership building, skills building and socio-economic initiatives. The response was encouraging. Jasmine Tavadia, Urvaksh Tantra and Hanosh Patel are now on board as three Sub-Committee Chairs and we wish them the very best in their endeavors at WZCCME.

Regional News - Doha – Qatar

Doha, capital of the peninsular Persian Gulf country Qatar, is a modern city on Doha Bay. It was founded in the 1820s as an offshoot of Al Bidda. It was officially declared as the country's capital in 1971, when Qatar gained independence. As the commercial capital of Qatar and one of the emergent financial centers in the Middle East, Doha is considered a world city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. Doha accommodates Education City, an area devoted to research and education. The arrival of the Zoroastrians in Doha can be attributed to the oil boom which opened up several job opportunities especially for our members from India and Pakistan . Among the early settlers were Captain Ferdoon Mistry, Macky Siganporia, Firdaus and Mehroo Wadia. Today, the population is around 100 plus and all are well settled. Togetherness being an important ingredient of our community life, the humdins meet at least twice or thrice a year. Rumi Bhathena, Country Head, Cape East Ltd., Qatar, generally initiates the gathering by sending emails to the community members and arranges a dinner/lunch event at different venues. In 2016, members celebrated Navroze at an Indian restaurant “Alishan” The event was attended by around 18-20 people. Yet, another was held on New Years’ day in August 2016 at the “Maharaja Hotel. Everyone had a hearty dinner and spent quality time together.

20

June, 2017

Unfortunately, due to economic slowdown, many hamdins have left Doha. The fall in oil and gas revenues has led many companies to either downsize or retrench personnel in their companies. Rumi and Roshni Bhathena as gracious hosts keep holding gettogethers at their residence. The last function held in evening was attended by more than 28 members which was enjoyed by everyone. On the auspicious day of Jamshedi Navroze, this year, a Navroze table was set up by Bakhtaver Italia at her residence. Quite a few families gathered to see the beautiful Table laid out in traditional manner and thereafter, had a sumptuous dinner at her place. As is usually the scenario in the Gulf countries, many families travel to India to do the Navjote and Marriage ceremonies of their children in a traditional manner. In 2016, Nozer Bhathena did the Navjote of his children in 2016 and Bakhtaver Italia had her daughter's marriage in January, 2017 in Bombay. Let’s remember - Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean. In view of our small numbers, let’s keep meeting at events as they give us an opportunity to share in the public space what we are involved with, as a caring, cohesive and compassionate community.

Poonawalla, Firoze and Nergish Khadiwala, Gool and Alam Limzerwala and Firoz and Perviz Mistry. Today, the population of the Zoroastrians in Kuwait is around 96 members. They are deployed in different fields. There is no formal community organization in Kuwait. The activities are handled by dedicated members from within the community who amongst other things, keep bringing the members of our community from time to time together on auspicious occasions. This being said, the real citadel of strength of any community is in the hearts, minds and desires of those who dwell there. We wish our members in Kuwait, the very best in their endeavors and look forward to receiving more success stories from their side in future.

Baby Zarathushtra As we celebrated Jamshedji Navroze, we also saw a fresh change for little Zoroastrian children! The very talented Zoroastrian artist Delzin Choksey created a cute image of our prophet Zarathustra that is doing the rounds of social media and is being widely circulated all over the Web. Featured on www.zoroastrians.net, Johbawa and Parsi Khabar online, as well as thousands of shares on Facebook and Instagram it became widely popular in over a week of its release. Delzin says, "I rarely if ever, come across a fun way to teach my 2 year old about our religion, I thought of creating this poster for her and for Zarathushti children around the world to learn and get engaged in understanding our faith. It's a bright and happy print and will make children engaged and interested in learning more about our Zarathushti faith" She hopes that it reaches as many children as possible and is working on similar concepts for young Zoroastrian children. INFINITE POSSIBILITIES

Fujairah

(Emirate in the UAE)

By: Aishwarya Bhalekar

Sometimes the world’s most interesting stories come from smallest nations and this story began long time ago. It's a story of a picturesque destination called Fujairah – a city firmly rooted in its past with rich heritage and culture. It is located on the eastern side of the UAE, along the Gulf of Oman. The Hajar mountain range divides the UAE, in two, from Ras Al Khaimah to Al Ain, and has kept Fujairah separated from the rest of the country. The Emirate derives its name from a spring of water located beneath one of the mountains. In olden ages, Fujairah was known as the land of sea giants. Its rich archeological treasures date back to about five centuries and include castles, forts, towers and mosques. These forts and castles were used for defensive purposes in repelling invaders and maintaining the soil of the homeland and its identity. Today, Fujairah is a modern, industrious city. It has progressed rapidly in all respects of economic and social development and especially in the field of tourism. The main cities and villages of Fujairah are - Dibba, Murbeh, Qidfa, Al Bidiyah, Masafi and Al-Siji. The emirate is blessed with a perfect setting of beautiful landscape, mountains, gorges, valleys, waterfalls, hot springs and has wonderful flora and fauna. The Wadis offer the best hiking spots. Wild olives, fig trees, pomegranates, apricots, fresh vegetables, grow in plenty. Wild life comprises Egyptian vultures, gazelles, Arabian Tahr. Goats, camels and donkeys graze on its arid lands. The clear waters rich with aquatic life and untouched reefs makes Fujairah a pristine spot for under water exploration, so gear up and venture into the waters by doing snorkeling and scuba diving for some close encounters amid the mesmerizing ocean life.

Places to visit in Fujairah

Fujairah Fort

Heritage Village

Fujairah Fort, built in 1670, is considered the oldest fort in the UAE. It has served as a defensive building and a home for the ruling family. The fort was damaged but has been renovated and restored to its former glory.

The Heritage Village in Fujairah presents the traditional way of life for residents of the Emirates. The village was built in the Mudhab tourist area at the beginning of 1996, covering an area of 6000 square meters. Traditional houses, cooking utensils, farming tools and the Al Yazrah irrigation system, used for irrigating fields with a working bull can still be seen. The Heritage Village contains the Fujairah fortress and other ancient buildings, which were used by the Ruler's family.

Fujairah Museum The Fujairah Museum is located south of the Fort, opposite the Ruler's Palace. Local and foreign archeologists have uncovered items dating back to early Bronze Age, over 4,500 years ago. Exhibits at the Fujairah Museum include pieces made of bronze, steel, brass, silver and gold. Bronze and Iron Age weapons, painted pottery, carved soapstone vessels and pre-Islamic silver coins. The latest addition to the displays is Herbs and Folkloric Medicine.

Al Bidyah Mosque Al Bidyah Mosque is the oldest in the United Arab Emirates. The engineering features are a major accomplishment for the period of construction. The mosque was named for the historical town that embraced it for so many centuries. It is also known as the Ottoman Mosque, for the man who built it.

The WILTED

FLOWER By: Roshni Riamalwala

The park bench was deserted as I sat down. I felt disappointed with life. The world was intent on dragging me down and I had every right to frown. The day wasn’t going as I had planned and as if that wasn’t enough to ruin my day, a young boy out of breath approached me, all tired from playing. He stood beside me with great excitement and said, “Look what I found!” In his hand was a flower and what a pitiful sight. Its petals were wilting from not enough rain, or too little light. I wanted him to take his dead flower and go away. I faked a small smile and then turned my head. But instead of leaving he sat next to my side, placed the flower to his nose and declared with surprise, “It sure smells pretty and it’s beautiful too That’s why I picked it, here, it’s for you!” Beautiful? This weed before me was dying. It wasn’t vibrant with color or life. I didn’t want to accept it, but i thought, if I did, he might leave.

26

June, 2017

So I reached for the flower, and replied, annoyed, “Oh, Just what I needed.” 'But…. Instead of him placing the flower in my hand, he held it in the air. It was then that I noticed for the first time, that this overly positive boy could not see. He was blind. Shocked, tears started running down my face as I then thanked him for picking the very best one. “You are welcome,” he smiled, and then ran off to play. He was completely unaware of the impact he had just made on my day. I sat there and wondered how he managed to see a self-pitying woman sulking on a bench. Perhaps from his heart, he’s been blessed with true sight. It was then, finally through the eyes of a blind child that I could see that the problem was not with the world, the problem was me. And for all those times I myself had been blind. At that moment, I vowed to see the beauty in life. To be grateful for my life and

appreciate every second that’s mine. I held that wilted flower up to my nose and breathed in the fragrance. It was beautiful. Then, I sat and watched that young boy, off in the distance, pick another wilted flower and approach an unsuspecting old man. He was about to change another life………….

Sweetness of Sour Oranges By: Roshni Riamalwala

He often bought oranges from an old lady. After they were weighed, paid for and put in his bag, he would always pick one from his bag, peel it, put a segment in his mouth, complain it's sour and pass on the orange to the seller. The old lady would put one segment in her mouth and retort, "why, it's sweet," but by then he was gone with his bag. His wife, always with him, asked, "the oranges are always sweet, then why this drama every time?" He smiled, "the old mother sells sweet oranges but never eats them herself. This way I get her to eat one, without losing her money. That's all."

She chided, "every time this man fusses over your oranges, and I see that you always weigh a few extra for him. Why?" The old lady smiled, "I know he does this to feed me an orange, only, he thinks I don't understand. I never weigh extra. His love tilts the scale slightly every time." Life's joys are in these sweet little gestures of love and respect for our fellow beings. And in giving, not usurping..... Not in money.

Profile: Roshni Riamalwala is currently the Honorary Project Manager for the Care2share and Care4health initiatives promoted by Medulla, a Dubai based company, with a focus on Corporate Social Responsibility. Roshni is also an artist and specializes in glass painting.

Tell Me

Why? Proper knowledge of religion is essential for the development of firm faith in Zoroastrianism and its joyful practices. We bring you a few question and answers that will help you in gaining more knowledge about our ancient faith.

Zarathushtra When and where did Zarathushtra live? According to some scholars Zarathushtra lived in the Iranian homeland of Airyanem Vaejah probably, around 1200 BCE.

1. He gave King Vishtasp the consecrated wine. His wish of visiting heaven was fulfilled. 2. Minister Jamasp was made to smell a flower and he got the gift to see the past and foretell the future.

Why did Prophet Zarathushtra smile at birth?

3. Prince Peshotan was given milk and he gained immortality in the material world.

Prophet Zarathushtra smiled at birth as he was aware of his divine appointment as a Prophet and his predetermined mission of over powering evil on this earth. He had, therefore, nothing to fear and hence he did not cry.

4. Crown prince Aspandyar was given pomegranate seeds and he became Rooyin-tan, that is, his whole body, except his eyes, became as strong as bronze.

Why did prophet Zarathushtra go to Mount Ushidaren? Zarathushtra had many questions relating to, good and evil, pain and misery and the origins of the world that remained unsatisfactorily answered in his childhood. So at the age of 20, with his father’s permission, he decided to set off to a secluded place where he could spend time in contemplation and seek answers to these questions. He, therefore, went to Mount Ushidaren where he spent 10 years, after which he received the divine revelation. What four gifts did Prophet Zarathushtra give to his disciples? King Vishtasp, once expressed to Zarathushtra to grant him four wishes. Zarathushtra said he could grant him only one wish and the remaining three to three other persons to be named by him. So Zarathushtra gave the following gifts to four different persons:

28

Why does Prophet Zarathushtra wear a white Pagri on his head? Prophet Zarathushtra by birth belonged to the priestly family as we see the title athravan (priest) prefixed to his name. Since the white pagri (turban) is one of the main insignia of priesthood even to this day, prophet Zarathushtra is shown in pictures wearing the white pagri.

Our Prayers What is the significance of Ashem Vohu?

What is prophet Zarathushtra seen holding in his hands in various photographs? Prophet Zarathushtra is seen holding different things in his hand in different photographs. 1. The Navgar - a nine knotted stick, used by priests which is used mainly whilst performing certain higher rituals like the Bareshnum and Vanot-ni- Baj. 2. The Gurz - a weapon devised by Peshdadian King Faridun to overpower the evil Zohak. It is a mace with the head of the cow. 3. The Fire – it is one of the three spiritually created fires called fire Adar Burzin Meher. This fire had the quality of not being hot (so that it would not burn the hand if held in the hand). It does not give out smoke and consumes very little fuel. 4. The Scroll of the Avesta – containing 21 Volumes which embodies all the wisdom in the world.

Ashem Vohu prayer soothes and relaxes the mind, and helps keep away negative thoughts. • One Ashem Vohu is recited after completion of any work or prayer. • Three Ashem Vohus are recited before a declaration or affirmation.

Snap Shot of Visions of GCC Cities Dubai Dubai Plan 2021

Create an inclusive society with happy people who live well in a sustainable place that has an excellent government and an economy that is a pivotal hub.

Abu Dhabi

Riyadh, Jeddah

Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030

Saudi Vision 2030

Develop a sustainable, diversified, and integrated economy with better opportunities for all.

Position the country as the heart of the Arab and Islamic worlds, an investment powerhouse, and the hub that connects three continents.

The above GCC cities are a mixed bag with different levels of “globalness.” They have the opportunity to define what kind of global cities they aspire to become. But for that they need to carve out their own unique path and make critical decisions about which economic, political, and social areas are most relevant to their futures—and then invest their resources and political capital accordingly. According to A T Kearney, here are the five areas where forward-thinking GCC cities should focus to capture a spot among the world’s leading cities. 1. Invest in innovation as an accelerator, enabling supply and make important bets that will drive innovation demand through regulation and procurement. 2. Leapfrog new models of business activity, enhancing trade and FDI flows, which brings with them ideas and stimulus from all over. Lower the risk of doing business, especially for entrepreneurs and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), by providing greater access and higher efficiency, including reforming bankruptcy laws.

Bahrain Economic Vision 2030

Kuwait Vision 2035

Oman Vision 2020

Focus on a productive, globally competitive economy, shaped by a fair government, a pioneering private sector, and a broad middle class of Bahrainis.

Transform the country into a financial and commercial hub with a competitive private sector and a supportive State, maintaining social identity and balanced development.

Create harmony between human development, a global society, diversified economy, and a sustainable Environment.

3. Build human capital networks and expand cultural offerings, incorporating the best talent into the long-term fabric of the society. Increase cultural offerings and encourage the visual and performing arts which that directly impact the wellbeing of the population and improve the city’s ability to retain global talent. 4. Embrace future-ready forms of governance to manage the changing environment, including the sharing of economy, increasing digitization, automation (drones, self-driving cars). This means establishing future-ready regulations and leveraging nontraditional and unconventional channels, such as crowd sourcing, as well as being open to inputs from public stakeholders, the private sector, global investors, and supply chain partners. It also means building capabilities based on foresight, and translating foresight into action. 5. Strengthen the connecting infrastructure—both the hard infrastructure that supports urbanization, including roads and transmission grids, and the soft and digital infrastructure, including educational institutions and diverse value networks,

Focus on human resources, a competitive private sector, economic diversification, and enhanced standard of living.

which shapes people, establishes trust, spreads ideas, and creates an engaging culture. In the GCC, much remains to be done in the pursuit of this ambitious goal. However, all signs indicate this resilient region’s cities will become important participants in the global economy and develop the visionary leadership with the steady hand that has characterized the region for the past several decades.

An entrepreneur, chartered accountant and an author, Russi Patel had built his business in the United Arab Emirates with his spirit of adventure and his ability to take calculated risks and come out a winner. A highly regarded member of the community, he continued to render great service and was always one of those you could depend on. He was a recipient of many awards for his contribution to the Economic Development of India and the UAE, and also towards humanity. Bar grieves loss of legal giant Tehmtan R Andhyarujina

Former Solicitor General of India, Tehmtan Andhyarujina passed away on Tuesday, 28th March, 2017. He was 83 years old and known as an epitome of decency and uprightness. He practiced law for six decades and has left behind a legacy in judgments he helped shape with his submissions as counsel, on constitutional law. Andhyarujina, was the Maharashtra Advocate General in 1993 to 1995, before he became the Solicitor General of India from 1996-1998. A graduate of law in 1957, from Government Law College in Mumbai, he chose to join law despite qualifying for the Indian Foreign Service in 1958. He had joined the Chambers of the legendary jurist and Constitutional Expert H M Seervai and appeared in big Constitutional cases. Among the many landmark cases he contributed his erudite mind and legal skills to, include the seminal Kesavananda Bharati case in which the Supreme Court laid down the ‘basic structure doctrine’ and while limiting power of the Parliament on amending the Constitution, strengthened the power of judicial review. May God grant his soul Garothman Behest!
