In this Issue Glass ceilings and close families
A Meher Bhesania Chairman, SynergyZ
In a world torn asunder by strife it seems when we do invest in writing we need to shore up values of love and togetherness and family, and send out a message that mankind can co-exist in mutual affection and respect and that we do not have to turn our backs on one another.”
s the mercury falls and the festive season approaches, SynergyZ undergoes a content transformation. While retaining the flavour that has made it such a strong and abiding reflection of our community and focussed attention on those who have strived and sought and never yielded, we do add some fresh features to the current dimension. In a world torn asunder by strife it seems when we do invest in writing we need to shore up values of love and togetherness and family, and send out a message that mankind can co-exist in mutual affection and respect and that we do not have to turn our backs on one another. The stories you read here of fathers and sons and mothers and daughters, is indicative of great and touching emotion. By the same token, we Zoroastrians’ can be immensely proud of our women and the way they have marched past the glass ceiling and raised the bar. The ‘Hall of Femme’ column records these triumphs and acts as an inspiration for hundreds of young women with so much to offer. When ever we begin work on our issues, we are struck by the tremendous level of achievement in so many different spheres by our community and the tangible service that they offer as individuals and corporations for so many worthy causes. It is humbling and yet, a matter of pride that SynergyZ can place on record the stories of these men and women who went out into the world and left that indelible footprint in the sands and in the snow; footprints that signpost the challenges for the new generation. They will inherit these legacies and it is their duty to protect and preserve our values and our culture. In our efforts to widen the readership base of SynergyZ, starting with this issue, we shall be cascading the contents of the journal in an electronic format via emails to WZCC members and organizations globally apart from uploading the issue on the website – www.wzcc.net. So you will now have the facility to view Synergy in your own browser or your mobile. Turn the pages…. Enjoy reading and please feel free to send us your feedback to wzccsynergyz@gmail.com.

President’s Message
D
espite the general sense of gloom all around India’s growth story is intact. Among the farsighted youth with abundant self-confidence – opportunities for entrepreneurship abound.
Someone asked Warren Buffet – “how he was so successful in his investments, Buffet said “I take the right decisions. When asked how he took the right decisions Buffet responded “Experience”. He was further asked “How do you get experience – Buffet said “By making the wrong decisions”. The moral of Buffet’s response is if you have an intuition or a good idea go ahead full steam with confidence. There is no fun if everything is laid out for you. Above all Entrepreneurship entails perseverance and confidence.
Minoo Shroff, WZCC, President
There is enough daring among our youth to plunge into business and professions with determination. We in WZCC have endeavored to create a supporting environment for them to take the initiative and avail the opportunities to mould their future.”
Women are now going places in all spheres – including Entrepreneurship. Hence WZCC recently launched WE – Women Entrepreneurs for empowering Zoroastrian women. The enthusiasm generated was heartening. There are many success stories of women entrepreneurs. Many more are raring to launch. WE will render the requisite support by way of personal grooming, counseling, training and mentoring. WZCC is also proposing to jointly conduct Entrepreneurial Development Programs with National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN), a well recognized organization in this field. These programs will be aimed to particularly assist the youth who wish to start or grow their business. There is enough daring among our youth to plunge into business and professions with determination. We in WZCC have endeavored to create a supporting environment for them to take the initiative and avail the opportunities to mould their future. To spread WZCC’s reach and explore business opportunities in South East Asia the next Annual General Meeting will be held in Singapore on January 4, 2013. It is a region which has grown exceptionally in the last three decades and has immense potential. Zarathushti Global Economic Forum will also be launched at this meet to set up a global platform for sharing experiences and networking on common issues.

IRAF SARKARI LEANS BACK against his chair, comfortable and confident, like a man who has accomplished much of what he wants to achieve and done it with conviction and dignity. Having changed the paradigm for the event management industry and moved it to another level of professionalism he has good cause to revel in a sense of achievement. After influencing people and mentoring them, for several years, Viraf Sarkari has established enviable credentials as a man who not only pursues excellence but attains it. Through his business acumen and a natural flair he reshaped the industry by simply doing what had not been done before. Taking the road less travelled by was only part of it. The other part that worked was the creation of his route map and then offering a service that flourished on its own success. It is universally acknowledged that he introduced India to a whole new surreal world on stage. Today, his company is syonymous with mega-events and the mega man takes it in his stride and can look back on how it all started with a certain tangible sense of satisfaction. In the restaurant business, from where Viraf Sarkari began his professional journey, he recounts, how his background in hotel management led him to the field of event management. “In my days in the five-star hospitality industry in Mumbai, I realised how disorganized some of the events were and also how the clients never enjoyed their own parties. The fun was missing; it was always too stilted and predictable. I wanted folks to enjoy what they were paying for their corporate events.
This sowed the seed of providing a different approach to event management in me. I later joined Hotel Airport Plaza, as the Manager. The hotel had a Discotheque called ‘Take Off’, where I met Andre Timmins, who was the Disc Jockey. We got together and did a few theme parties and events and then started our own discotheque called ‘Xanadu’. This is where we met our other business partner Sabbas Joseph, who was essentially a media person. We made a good team and our ideas jelled. We also were on the same page and that is why we started Wizcraft in 1988.” Following the setting up of Wizcraft, Viraf Sarkari’s experience came into play and he managed mega projects for the company; strengthening its technical infrastructure and expanding the organization’s scope of business in India and across the globe. As the Director of Wizcraft, Viraf Sarkari is closely involved in producing major productions and concerts globally. Being someone who is technologically inclined and someone who loves to experiment, he has his pulse on the latest production and technological breakthroughs in the field of events and entertainment worldwide. This has enabled Wizcraft to constantly innovate and experiment with new technology platforms for the entertainment industry. Wizcraft shot to fame in 1996, after organizing India’s biggest concert ever - The Michael Jackson Concert. Viraf Sarkari says, “It started with a phone call from Michael Jackson Management. They said Michael Jackson wanted to do a show for charity and they wanted Wizcraft to promote it in India. Were we interested? Of course, we were. This was the King of Pop! I was thrilled and scared. Scared of the thought, whether this was for real or was someone conning us? So we insisted on meeting the person and taking an assurance from Michael Jackson that he would be arriving on schedule and this was not some jest. Next we were invited to meet him in Los Angeles. He met us backstage in his room where he was rehearsing and we gave him a Ganesha, a Natraj and an Indian outfit. He was mighty thrilled. I taught him a bit of Hindi and had him say on Video ‘Mein Hindustan Aah Raha hun’. This news was splashed all over the TV channels in India when we got back. As committed he came to Mumbai and did the
biggest ever concert show India has seen to date. The concert took our company to the next level in terms of imaging, exposure to international standards of working and the latest in event technology.” Now, there was no looking back for Wizcraft. This act had set the standard. The next milestone for them was establishing their very own brand – IIFA (International Indian Film Academy) in 2000. What started off as a ceremony at the Millennium Dome in London has grown into a full-fledged IIFA Weekend, which hosts 24 events over three days. In a decade, it has become a much sought-after brand by governments of host countries, tourism ministries, media networks, sponsors and millions of viewers across the

world. So far, the event has travelled to 10 countries and five continents. Viraf Sarkari has been Executive Producer and Director of prestigious games and ceremonies in India and abroad, such as the National Games, 2002 and 2006; the first AfroAsian Games, 2003; the South Asian Games, Colombo, 2006; the flag handover segment at the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, Melbourne 2006 and the opening and closing ceremonies of the Commonwealth Youth Games Pune, 2008. No dream is too big for Viraf Sarkari and in pursuit of his vision he says, “We partnered with Apra Group to set up Kingdom of Dreams in Gurgaon in 2008 to create an entertainment, culture and cuisine destination for tourists to
experience India’s diversity and witness the biggest Bollywood stage show – Zangoora. Today, it has completed more than 550 shows and the most joyous and momentous occasion in my life was when my partners and I received a prestigious award from the Events and Entertainment Association for outstanding contribution to the industry.” In December 2009, the Government of India appointed Wizcraft as the Event Management Agency to produce, direct and execute the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Viraf Sarkari recounts, the inspirational experience of mounting one of the biggest live events India has ever seen and says - “The focus was on creating an Indian cultural extravaganza for the world audience. The opening November 2012

Make the difference ceremony on October 3, 2010 was one of the most memorable events of my life. I was overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the spectacle that made India proud. To witness Indian and world media laud the event as one of the best Commonwealth Games opening ceremonies ever, was a humbling and inspirational experience for all of us at Wizcraft.” Viraf Sarkari has also produced various award nights such as Filmfare, Apsara, IIFA and GIMA. At a personal level, he believes that the values learnt from his parents have shaped him into a good human being. Realizing that it’s discipline that will shape the next crucial decade of his life, he says, “I want to work towards building a legacy and infrastructure for the events and entertainment business in India.” Enjoying challenges and possessing the spirit of enterprise, courage and zest Viraf Sarkari along with his partners and his team will certainly take Wizcraft to even greater heights.
Quick takes: 1. How many offices does Wizcraft have worldwide and what are the company’s future plans? Wizcraft has nine offices located in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Calcutta, Hyderabad, Dubai, Colombo and Singapore. We also have full time employees in London and USA. Totally we are around 400 wizzes working at Wizcraft. 2. Has the global recession affected your business? Lot of our business comes from large multinational clients and when the recession hits them they bring their Activation & Events budgets down so yes we do get a bit affected. But we have developed our own brands like IIFA and GIMA that keeps us going. 3. Who inspires you and who are your role models? I get my inspiration from Walt Disney and Cirque du Soleil.

Social Media
Is Social Media working for you?
Fred Sarkari
S
OCIAL MEDIA IS ONE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS strategies a business can invest in. I have seen more business shut their doors due to social media. Well let me rephrase that by saying, if you do not know how to take advantage of social media – social media will take advantage of you, your time, and your resources until you are left dry of them all. When a social media campaign lacks authenticity, it offers the viewers little or no value and/or education. Also, when it fails to establish a relationship with its viewers, or it does not seem real, it is a useless distraction at best. Social Media is the future of communication, a way to share our messages to the masses, that we never had access to before. This new form of communication consists of platforms like Facebook, Linkedin, blogs, in essence an online community where people can share as much information as they like or as little personal information as they desire with other members. When we understand the true elements of what social media is, it becomes one of the most powerful tools to grow and market your business.
16
SynergyZ
November 2012
III - Keep them coming back Your online viewers will come back only if they have good reason to; and this is why consistency is amongst the most crucial aspects of succeeding in this realm. Imagine that the next time you walk into Starbucks you are told that coffee will now be served only on Mondays, what are the chances you will return on other days? If you want people to keep coming back to your social media platform, provide them with a consistent reason to do so. Educate them; let them know who you and your company really are and what you stand for. In short, be real and authentic. Gary Vaynerchuk, an expert in the world of wine education through social media, was interviewed by CNN when he hit the 350,000 followers mark on Twitter. When asked how he managed to do this, all he had to say was that he cared.
ONE BIG PARTY
The social sphere can be looked upon as an enormous party, one that continues to grow in size. A good breeding ground for rumors, this place allows you to interact with just about anybody in the ‘party’, allowing you to remain in the knowhow of what’s being said about your business. This, consequently, gives you the opportunity to get to know and understand your target audiences. Apart from your target audience, this sphere also allows you to connect with prospects you would not have been able to in the past.
MONEY VS RELATIONSHIPS
Entering the social media realm with the idea of making money is the first mistake; this sphere is more about creating relationship, these relationships in the future will come to you for your products and services. Would you be reading this if I was trying to sell you my products? Well, that’s pretty much how people feel when businesses try selling their wares through this platform.
THE FOUR PILLARS OF SOCIAL MEDIA I - Intent of your social media campaign: Look at this realm as a back door that allows your customers to be able to see the real you. Imagine visiting someone’s home and as opposed to their pictures and who they really are you see mounds of their work, their products, and their services up for sale for you to purchase. Social media is a place where you make relationships with those that visit your home. As you build these relationships, by default they will want to visit your website, store front etc. II - Need to be found Travelling through California, I once came by this singer who continues to remain one of my all time favorites, and I continue to wonder if she’ll ever be found. Having an incredible voice does not automatically mean you will be the next star. She had to make sure that the right people found her. Same as social media, our concern should not be how many people find us, more than, the right people for our success find us.
IV - Become an expert The strongest leverage you can have as a business owner is to become an expert in your industry. Experts educate those around them in how to be more successful at what they do. Remember, educate does not mean bombard your social media with information. Keep the above points in mind and social media will be one of the greatest strategies in building your business. Otherwise, social media will be a distraction that eats up the resources you already have little of.

ADI MOTIWALLA IS A PERSON who can very easily justify the label of pioneer in his field. Few can and will deny that he blazed the trail, set the pace and led the pack when it came to digital technology and special effects. By dint of his exceptional business sense and sheer hard work, he has risen to great heights and achieved meteoric success. His services are eagerly sought after by discerning clients in the UAE and the Mena region. It has been a ‘phenomenal’ journey and one that reflects optimism and inspiration. After completing a degree in 1981, in photography and majoring in Colour Technology and minors in Illustration
and Industrial Photography, at the Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara in the USA, Dadi Motiwalla returned to Dubai and set up mt2 which went on to become the region’s most versatile multi-media production facility. As mt2 grew, Dadi Motiwalla’s business acumen came into play and he introduced cutting edge digital and conventional technologies, which allowed his company to deliver custom-made solutions for his clients’ varied communication needs. In 2002, Dadi Motiwalla joined forces with Paul Roy of Riva Digital which has amassed enviable reputation as an extremely versatile and creative Digital Effects facility engaged in the development, production and distribution of world-class 3D animation and visual effects. He is currently, the CEO of Riva Digital. In 2003, Dadi entered into a business partnership with Cato Partners, an Australian Branding and Identity Management company, which is amongst the world’s top five branding agencies. As its Managing Director, Dadi has been solely responsible for all new business development in the GCC, Mena region, India and Pakistan. His expertise in production makes him the ideal liaison, working on a day-to-day basis with the client and project managers in Dubai, and the branding and design team in the studios in Melbourne. Dadi’s entrepreneurial vision and his inexhaustible stamina to stick it out have taken him places. His work has won for him several International Advertising Association awards in print and television, as well as, The New York Film and Television Festival Award for animation in the automotive category for a TV commercial the company did for Bridgestone Tyres. When asked about his memorable childhood experience, Dadi Motiwalla
spoke about the numerous occasions when he used to accompany his father to watch previews of movies that they were anticipating screening in the movie theatres. “One of the family business units that my father managed was the cinema business. So my exposure to the world of Hollywood and Bollywood movies was at a very early age. I was 8 years old, when my father used to take me along for private preview screenings in our special preview room. The screenings helped my dad to decide whether the movies were suitable for purchase. He would engage me in conversation about the movies that we had just seen and seek my opinion about them, especially, the ones that were made for children.” These father-son interactions gave Dadi Motiwalla the impetus to think independently and have an opinion at a very young age which he cherishes till date and with good reason. Dadi Motiwalla credits his upbringing for his success. “My maternal grandfather, Dr. Minocher Kutar, was a General Practitioner. I called him “gidda” (meaning grandfather in Arabic). He was a noble soul. I learnt the true meaning of selfless service to the community from him, through the way he lived his life and freely served those who needed his services, even if they were unable to pay him. He narrated his little pearls of wisdom to me daily. Today they still signpost my life and act as beacons. He was my role model and epitomised our Zoroastrian faith in its truest form and was a living example of our basic belief of Good thoughts, Good words and Good deeds.” About his father, he says, “I learnt the value of dedication and honest work ethics from my dad who administered our family business with firmness, yet tempered with kindness and fairness. He taught me never to jump to conclusions and learn the value of patience and listen to both sides of each story before making any conclusions. Most importantly, he taught me to appreciate and acknowledge the contributions of all who worked for and with us. If I succeed in emulating even half of his sterling qualities, I can indeed count myself a very lucky man,” admits Dadi Motiwalla with a sense of pride. When asked about his ethical code in conducting business, he promptly replies, “Honesty and integrity are the cornerstones
of my professional life. These two values inculcated in my psyche, by my grandfather and father, during my growing years, have translated into respect from my peers and business associates for my approach towards my work. Never bite off more than you can chew. Ambition is a quality that is essential to succeed in ones professional career. However, blind ambition without the backing of honesty and integrity will result in failure in the quest for one›s longterm vision for success.” Dadi’s work is all about finding solutions, be it branding and identity management or creating animation for real estate projects or innovative rides for theme parks. He loves the creative and technical challenges that his work poses and says, “Each day offers a chance to experience something new, whether it is meeting clients or relishing the personal and creative pleasure of receiving
me want to keep ticking.” Dadi Motiwalla has been a resident of Dubai for the past 34 years. This is the city where he established his business and saw it grow by leaps and bounds. Hence, it goes without saying that Dadi Motiwalla feels extremely privileged to have lived and prospered in Dubai. With all praise for Dubai’s ‘Never say die’ attitude, Dadi has faith in the resilience of the country and hails His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, whose global vision for Dubai has turned this Emirate into an oasis of stability and prosperity. Dadi Motiwalla firmly believes that Dubai’s economy is steadily recovering and Dubai is benefitting from its reputation as a ‘safe haven’ amidst strife and turmoil in the MENA region. “For my part, I am here for the long haul and not in any hurry to leave,” concludes Dadi Motiwalla.
appreciation from my present clients who appreciate my role in contributing to their success. I look for small pleasures in everything that I need to do in a day and savour the positives of that moment. In this manner, there is always something to look forward to everyday. This attitude has kept me ticking for the past thirty years, and I hope I will be able to continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Above all, it is the continued belief and support of my lovely wife Nurelle and my boys, Arman and Bijan that makes it all worthwhile. They are my greatest supporters and can also be my worst critics. They are really the ones who keep me grounded and the reason to make

T IS TRULY A SAGA IN THE WORLD OF INDIAN COMMERCE, A HOUSEHOLD name for generations and a symbol of honest productivity at affordable rates. Established in 1897, the Godrej Group has seen four generations of a close-knit business family build the conglomerate that stands for consumerism with concern for the common man by giving him quality without the expense. The company has grown; diversified, raised its profile yet never forgotten the aspirations of an average Indian and the single fact which inspired its beginnings: if the world can make it, so can we.
HISTORY
The Godrej Company had its beginnings in India’s freedom struggle and was inspired by the idea of Swadeshi. Its founder, Ardeshir Godrej, was a staunch nationalist and believed that the country’s economic degradation was even worse than its political subjugation, and that freedom could not be won unless the country became self-reliant. He was a persistent inventor and a strong visionary who could see a spark in the future. His inventions manufactured by his brother Pirojsha Godrej, laid the foundation of today’s Godrej Empire. One of India’s most trusted brand, Godrej enjoys the patronage and trust of around 500 million Indians every single day. 20

Fathers and Sons Mothers and Daughters
T
hroughout history there has been a symbiotic realtionship between fathers and sons and mothers and daughters. Our epic stories, regardless of religion, would be so much poorer if these exalted and heartwarming themes were taken out of the equation. They not only enrich our lives and underscore the value of family but are evidence of great love, bonding and outright affection. This series is dedicated to these two wonderful relationships, both of which have made us a better world and given us so much joy and so much passion, so much unquestioning loyalty and so much unalloyed pleasure. Where else but with fathers and sons and mothers and daughters is life so fulfilling, where you give a little, take a little, laugh a little, cry a little, win a little, lose a little, for, as the song goes, that is the story of, that’s the glory of love. Fortunate and blessed are those who find themselves in these relationships and revel in that sharing. As we talk to these ‘pairings,’ we recount anecdotes, reminisce about their lives together and recall incidents that spurred them to a closer relationship. They all come from diverse fields. Here you can catch rare glimpses of these successful men and women from our community with their sons and daughters, each story enhanced by their photographs together and how they inspired the best in each other. This issue is a precursor to a book that is being brought out on the same lines designed to celebrate these two unique relationships in the community and SynergyZ would love to get your feedback on this special ‘trailer’ for the big project.

The Mehtas: In Top Gear
M
Y LIFE’S JOURNEY STARTED from my home in Ahmedabad – from a fairly large house with a small, lush garden boasting tall trees and beautiful flower beds that stood strong and fast for all the 21 years that I lived there. I was able to revive the same memories when I moved into my house in Chicago some thirty years ago. The change was not easy, but I have realized that it becomes easier to adapt to change when you are mentally prepared for it. For this, I would like to offer credit to my mother, my brother Kayomarsh and my friends whose warmth and support made my journey to the US relatively easy, not once but twice. The first time in 1973, when I proceeded for studies to the US, and then in 1982, when I moved with my wife Kim and my three sons, Shawn, Sheroy and Shazad to settle down permanently. Believing that when one works hard towards a vision, the hurdles seem to vanish and the path emerges clearer and signposts itself. So, I pursued my dream and set up a gas station and a repair shop, in the name of Mehta Motors, in Chicago in 1983. While my wife Kim stood like a rock besides me in my venture, my sons grew up to follow my league and joined hands in my business. Today, Mehta Motors, is housed in two buildings and stands as an enduring testimonial to family entrepreneurship. One building is the repair facility. My sons Shawn and Sheroy take care of the repair work with technicians while Shazad looks into the office work, purchasing, billing and customer service. The other building is a full service car wash and detail center and I take care of that side of the business with Kim’s help. It is truly said, that nothing compares to a relationship between a father and his sons. Reflecting on the priceless years I have spent with them, I can only say that my sons with their exceptional abilities and outstanding personalities have emerged

as my pillars of strength and infallible support. Although they have varied interests in life, they have matured into respectable citizens and businessmen. The beauty lies in the special relationship that we share and the unique bond of affection and respect between us. There is no single incident that defines our relationship. That would be restrictive. It is several strands that come together to make that rope which keeps us so beautifully bound together, like a the pages of a rare book, so too is our relationship measured by the strength of its spine. These boys are my spine. A series of events that we have spent together over their growing years describes the essence of our bonding - the trips that we undertook when they were in their early teens, working together at our auto workshop and having the opportunity to interact with them, being there for them when they were in difficult situations, and sharing how to handle those situations and eventually, learning from each other. Children emulate what they see, not just what they hear. My wife Kimberly and I have lived and interacted the way we think was right and hopefully our children have seen those qualities and thought enough about them to imbibe them in their own lives. They are individuals with a sense of togetherness, they have their own specialties and are constantly growing in their own ways which is very gratifying to observe. I feel very fortunate and grateful to have my sons working with me in the business and it makes me proud to receive compliments on their work, their conduct and ethics and professionalism and that is extremely satisfying for a parent.

aking millions of dollars is an achievement but it doesn’t guarantee respect. Over the years, we have seen customers and community members giving immense respect to our Dad and we knew we wanted to follow in his footsteps. Even though we are different individuals possessing different personalities, Dad never compared us with each other and has always valued our differences. Mostly it happens that people talk about their ideas and beliefs but do not get into the act of practicing in everyday life; our father is one of the few individuals who actually lives what he believes in. We are grateful that he has always been there for us at every point in our lives. Everything that we are and ever will be is because of him.

The Turels:
Upholding the code of medical ethics
I
FEEL TRULY BLESSED WITH TWO absolutely wonderful sons, Burgese and Mazda, both of whom have joined the noble profession of medicine. What could be better than that from my point of view? Burgese has been a kind, compassionate, gentle and caring doctor who has worked conscientiously for the welfare of his patients. He specialises in cardiology and hopes to get a Fellowship at a good university so that he can fulfill his dream. A sound, knowledgeable and committed physician, Burgese is respected by his patients, peers and administrators alike. A gentleman to the core, he is also a great communicator and manages to keep in touch with family and friends with his long unhurried telephone conversations whenever possible. Burgese, in short, is principled, ethical, sensitive, correct and an upright individual. Mazda makes me immensely proud of him as a handsome, witty, level-headed and strongly focussed personality. Whilst still in Grade Nine, he would frequently sit back late night seeing me review my neurosurgical operation movies on our home television. That fascinated him and he imbibed the passion for healing at a young age. It triggered within him a desire to become a neurosurgeon. A decision he made at such a tender age and living up to realise his dream speaks volumes for his extraordinary self-belief and steadfastness. Unfazed and unspoilt by the often wayward and materialistic tendencies exhibited by some of his generation, Mazda has grown in strength, winning hearts and accolades with his unflagging dedication, kind and sympathetic disposition and unpretentious nature. To have two sons who give releif to people stricken by illness is like being blessed twice. 26

DR. MAZDA
A
s children, growing up with a busy father was never easy. But our mother took extra efforts to ensure that we had daily face time with our Dad. He always left early and came home late. So mother would wake us up, sometimes at ungodly hours, and get us out of bed to sit with our dad while he had his dinner. This has become an invaluable memory now in retrospect even though our collection of yawns was prodigious. But it was quality time and it has counted for a lot in giving us a set of durable values. Any amount of time spent with Dad was always infused with information of some sort, be it medicine, sport, history or interesting stories from his travels. Our time with him always left us with a sense of heightened awareness. He is a great writer and would sometimes read out his thoughts, which he has been meticulously jotting down in a little diary, so he may share them with us at the end of a day. Some really funny while most others, insightful and wise. More than what the words had to say, the beauty was in his art of sharing, his way of connecting us to his experiences from his day. Now that we share a common profession, our interaction is all the more fruitful and I feel I have a life’s length of learning under his guidance. He keeps me involved and we travel together on neurosurgical conferences and this is where we exchange new ideas and I get to learn from my time with him, whilst at the same time see how much impact his work and
his practice has continued to have on his patients and the profession of neurosurgery. He inspires me to be a better surgeon, a better human being.

uring my first few days of internship at KEM Hospital, Mumbai I was asked to monitor a ‘dead’ patient, which I was unaware of. The reason this ‘act’ was to be performed was to gradually break the news to an already irate family. On initial exam, I was unnerved due to lack of vital signs and rushed to my senior houseman for advice which he pleasantly told me to follow him in this ‘act’. This entire episode shook me up. At that time, my Dad happened to give me a surprise visit in the Examination Room. He gently addressed my fears and calmed me down. I still recall the way he handled me and my nerves such that I could continue my shift until the night was over. Dad is very meticulous, disciplined, hard-working, has stamina to work long hours, is aggressive when required, goal oriented, methodical, loving, kind and humane individual. He has always been creative and always thinks of improvising for better results.

The Rivetnas: Firm Foundations
C
YRUS’ KNOWLEDGE AND awareness of his Parsi-Zoroastrian heritage and the subtleness, with which he has woven it into his career as an architect, makes me feel extremely proud of him. Though he was born and brought up in Chicago with hardly any Zoroastrians around, he left his potentially high profile career in Chicago and went to India to work with a noted architect in Ahmedabad. Subsequently, he made trips to study and document Agiaries in Gujarat and Iran. His special effort to connect with his relatives in Mumbai and a dedicated trip (by train, bus and camel) across the IndoPak border to visit his mother’s cousins in Lahore is a testament to his staunch affinity to his roots and the ‘never say die’ spirit that marks his life. I am indeed proud that he has found a healthy balance between his work as an architect, his family and Zoroastrian community, as a whole. Very creative and focussed, Cyrus has demonstrated a true entrepreneurial spirit. Starting out shortly after college, he set himself a goal. The plan was to start his own firm and he began to pursue that vigorously and with singleminded determination. He has now developed a patented service model of small business with minimal capital outlay, acquiring services of architects and engineers as and when required. Within a few years from the inception of his firm, he has built up a clientele solely through referrals from satisfied customers - a testimony to the quality service he provides. It is gratifying to see the Zoroastrian community recognise his passion and commitment to designing Dar-e-Mehrs build upon traditional Agiary design and yet amenable to evolving present-day needs as can be seen in the designs he has done for several Zoroastrian groups in North America. Life is full of ups and downs! As a father, I have always advised Cyrus to stay on track through life’s roller coaster ride - Follow the Pole Star. Focus your mind on your dream and pursue it with vigour and diligence.

O
ne of the greatest gifts I have inherited from my father is the way he confronts his problems and his uncanny knack of solving these problems with eagerness and conviction. Whether it is calculating the strength of a structure in his engineering profession or as a Zoroastrian, looking for a way to perpetuate the religion or as a Grandfather fixing a broken toy; his life is filled with endless opportunities to fix the crunches. Trained as an engineer, he has the unique ability to isolate the problem and break it down to its simplest form without being distracted by the inconsequential factors. He can then find the solution that works best using the least amount of effort. As a result his solutions are simple, straight forward and economical. As an architect, my life too is filled with endless problems to solve. Whether it is trying to develop a specific design on a small budget, determining a construction technique for a contractor or finding an affordable way to connect two materials, my life is also surrounded with opportunities to solve problems. My father and I are both meticulous and precise, but in a practical manner. When my father puts something together you can be assured that it is flawless, likewise when I work on a project, I am not satisfied until it is of the highest quality possible. I check and recheck my drawings, until I am confident that they are close to perfect. Ideal parents, as I would love to call them, my mother and father have always acted as a team in everything
that they do and I am a reflection of them. What they have taught has never been told, it has always been shown. They have thoughts that turn into words that in turn result in actions. Their projects do not end with thoughts and words but create the final impact by means of transformation into deeds. This lesson of leading by example has penetrated deep into my psyche. When I traveled through Gujarat, I frequently stayed in Parsi dharamshalas, where I got the chance to meet faithful aunties and uncles. While I learnt a lot from them, I also showed them how a Zoroastrian born and bred outside India had the same values and beliefs as they did. Hence, my contribution to my country India would undoubtedly, dwell around the welfare of the Parsi community.
My father and I are both meticulous and precise, but in a practical manner. When my father puts something together you can be assured that it is flawless, likewise when I work on a project, I am not satisfied until it is of the highest quality possible.”

The Dasturs:
Grace and Graciousness
M
Y RELATIONSHIP WITH MY son, Xerxes is intertwined around numerous cherished moments that we have spent together. Today I recount those incidents with fondness and warmth and the one that made me feel the proudest was the time when he was born and I held him in my arms for the first time. A lifetime bond was created then and there. Another incident that I recollect is, walking for the first time to Hanging Gardens with him on my shoulders. I can still feel the thrill and joy that we had shared then. When Xerxes became a Navar, it was another memorable moment. My joy knew no bounds, when Xerxes became a Chartered Accountant and joined me as a partner in M/s V.S. Dastur & Co. and D.J. Jasavala & Co. It was at this momentous juncture in his career that I gave him a piece of advice - Be good and do well in life. It is important to be a good accountant but it is much more important to be a good human being and to follow the tenets of Zarathushti religion. These incidents have formed a solid foundation for the father-son connection and over the years. I have seen it evolving into a stronger, sweeter relationship.

The heights by great men reached and kept, were not attained by sudden flight, but because they, while their companions slept, were toiling upwards in the night.” My father used to be busy during the week with his practice and tuitions, but come the weekend, Dad spent quality time with his family. The most endearing memory of my childhood was the Saturday night ritual of a movie followed by dinner in a restaurant with my parents. We also spent many memorable Sunday mornings seeing a cartoon movie at Metro Cinema. I looked forward to those amazing, funfilled weekends, when Dad despite his social commitments was always around for his family. A person who firmly believes in the adage, ‘The time to be happy is now’, Dad has always counted on his blessings and made the best of what he always had. Professionally, we both are very focussed, single - minded and determined. We both enjoy spending time with the family; we love travelling, eating out and watching
movies. We both are avid readers and we both love doing anagrams and crosswords. Classical music is yet another common interest that we as father-son duo share. As firm believers in Zoroastrian faith we try, in our own little yet significant ways to contribute towards the welfare of the community. However, I am a nitty gritty kind of a person, while my father is a big picture guy. I am way too frank for my own good. I am also not as emotional as my father. My father is very trusting whereas I am wary of people until I get to know them very well. My father has always made lists. In the bygone years when he used to travel by bus, he made a list of things to do on his used bus ticket. This was a daily routine for him. Now he no longer travels by bus, but he still always makes a list. I feel proud to say that Dad has always been around for me, first as a father and now as the Senior Partner in our Firm. He has surprised me over the years with his generosity and patience and it is my constant endeavor to imbibe those values from him.

The Messmans:
The sweet flavour of success
T
HERE IS NO RELATION IN THIS world that encapsulates the warmth of unconditional love, unswerving support and deep understanding shared between a mother and her daughter. In fact, no bond is as primal and pristine than that between mother and daughter. I and my daughter Kainaz, share a unique bond and no relationship has been as fulfilling as the one I share with her. I remember the night when Kainaz was born. It feels just like yesterday. Since then she has brought so much joy into my life and I am eternally grateful to God for this. My fondest memory of Kainaz is when she was aged five. We were on a holiday to Mahableshwar in the month of December. Feeling extremely cold she asked, “Who asked Dadarji (God) to put on the air-conditioner?” We have innumerable memories of such happy times spent together. Our outlet, Theobroma is a small family owned and managed bakery, patisserie, and chocolaterie in Mumbai. Essentially,
I look after Outlets and Kainaz looks after Production. The first few months at Theobroma were real testing times for our skill, patience endurance and grit, but we all stood by each other through trying times. Together, we tried to solve our problems. Our efforts have paid off – Theobroma has proudly expanded with 3 Cafes; in Colaba, Bandra and at Peddar Road. Recently, Theobroma was awarded “Best Confectionery Shops - Stand Alone category” at the Times Food and Nightlife Guide-Mumbai Awards 2012. Today, the challenges are new but by no means easier to solve. Though more experienced now, we continue to strive harder with a mighty resolve to perform better. Though we work together, Kainaz and I hardly get time to exchange more than a few words due to our work commitments and hectic lives. So time permitting, Kainaz and I go on holidays to spend quality time together.

M
y mother is my hero and my inspiration in life. A true friend and philosopher, she is the one I turn to whenever I hit a roadblock in my life. A highly industrious and persevering woman, she has a deep passion to feed her family and friends good soul food. It is out of this sentiment that Theobroma was born. She works with her heart; she puts hundred percent commitment into whatever she does. An affectionate and loving person, she has completely dedicated herself to the wellbeing of our family. She looks beautiful and that belies her age. Everyone tells me, I am just like her and therein rests my truest compliment. We are very much alike in personality and temperament; independent, emotional and fiercely passionate. She leads by example and has taught me to be a kind, generous and a good human being. I always try and do the right thing no matter how difficult the decision. My mother expects nothing less from me.

Stories on community’s women achievers By Meher Bhesania
T
he glass ceiling cracked some thirty years ago. Now, into the second decade of the 21st century, even the shards have been swept away and women have truly come into their own. As they take their rightful place in the professional sector there is no pre-conceived limitation placed on their capabilities. Achievements in threats and sciences or any other field of endeavour are no longer predicated to gender and women have begun to hold their own and more right across the board. With every passing day, women are making an indelible print and often setting the pace by leading the pack. We have seen this dramatic rise to the top in commerce, in corporations, in medicine, literature, education, research, media, sports, audio visual and even IT spheres. To recognise this march of progress we have initiated a special series designed to showcase our community’s leading women achievers and tell their stories as an inspiration to the new generation of women for whom opportunity now knocks more than once.

A journey called
Jehangir Sabavala
Jehangir Sabavala was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1977”
H
Art
IS ART IS UNIVERSAL IN its appeal and its power and majesty are recognised by experts and aficionados alike. His canvas is a rich tapestry where various Indian art forms coalesce and flow. Creativity is the hallmark of Jehangir Sabavala’s genius. He was given the soubriquet “Reasoning Visionary”, and his contemporaries saw in him a certain savoir faire that extended beyond the boundaries of convention. Many an Art historian, who has attempted to capture Jehangir Sabavala’s many-splendoured brilliance, has agreed that it is in a category by itself. In 2010, a year before he passed away, leaving his
rich and enduring legacy, one of his serene landscapes called The Casuarina Line I fetched Rs 1.7 crores at a Saffronart auction. Another of his paintings titled Vespers 1 was sold for Rs 2.1crores at a Bonhams sale in London. Born in 1922, in an affluent and socially well-placed Parsi family in Bombay, Jehangir Sabavala grew up in a highly stimulating intellectual environment right from childhood where the debate and discussion of ideas and concepts were encouraged and endorsed and every point of view was allowed on the table. In this stimulating atmosphere his creative muse took wing. His mother belonged to the aristocratic Sir Cowasjee Jehangir family, the founders of the Jehangir Art Gallery, Sir Cowasji Jehangir Hall, Jehangir Institute of Psychiatry in Mumbai and the Jehangir Nursing home in Pune. Jehangir Sabavala was educated at the Elphinstone College, Mumbai. After receiving his early training in Art at Mumbai’s Sir JJ School of Art from 19421944, he went to study at the Heatherley School of Art, London from 1945-1947. He subsequently left for Paris to study at the Académie Julian, the Académie Andre Lhote and the Académie de la Grande Chaumeire, and completed his training in 1957. Jehangir Sabavala could have easily settled in Europe but the city being very much a part of him and his family being an important part of the city’s history, he chose to come back to Mumbai and it was then that he started his career as a professional artist. His natural talent rose to the fore and he soon established his credentials on the global art circuit. His first solo arts exhibition was held sixty years ago, and marked the beginning of an illustrious career that would find little by way of competition, so outstanding has been his impression on the Indian scene. Practicing in the modernist idiom with deeply ingrained classical overtones, he described his art as a combination of the academic, impressionist and cubist schools. His earlier works showed human forms as minute elements on the canvas, shrouded in silence which summarized the notion of solitude perfectly. November 2012

Art
In the late ‘70s, he developed a personalized style of his own and that became distinctive. He painted landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes expressing his affinity and love for nature. His works had a serene quality in them. A classicist by sensibility and training, and a contemplative by temperament, he was a highly focused practitioner of his idiom who never got swayed by the fashionable trends and dipped into the vivid palette of his imagination and aesthetically interpreted on canvas the world as he saw it through his unique vision. Jehangir Sabavala stayed an intrinsic personality influenced in mind but untouched on canvas by outside impressions. In a career spanning six decades, Jehangir Sabavala exhibited 38 solo shows and participated in innumerable group exhibitions in India and all over world. His last solo exhibition, ‹Ricorso›, was held at the Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai, in 2008. Seven monographs have been published on him by eminent art publishers, including the house of Tata, McGraw Hill and the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. Colours of Absence, a film on his life directed by Arun Khorkar won the National Award in 1994. His biography: Pilgrim, Exile, And Sorcerer: The Painterly Evolution of Jehangir Sabavala, written by Ranjit Hoskote, was published in 1998. Billed as India’s one of the most expensive artists, his paintings Casuarina Line and Vespers 1, set new world auction records. When he wasn’t expressing himslef through his art he was the quintessential gentleman. He exuded an old-world graciousness and charm and his hospitality was renowned. Speaking about the ever-churning creative turmoil in an artist’s mind, he once said: “It is so easy to find oneself adrift in a life amidst its extraordinary and complex cross currents. I know that in my own case, it has been a struggle to hold fast and steady to the stream. I discovered art as a young man. It became an inspiration, a raison d’etre to which a lot else has had to be sacrificed.” But for those who love his works and their numbers are legion the sacrifice only enhanced his reputation and enriched the vein of India’s artistic heritage. 40

Jehangir Sabavala was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1977. Despite the many accolades he received in a very fulfilling and successful life, he considered his wedding to his wife Shirin, whom he met at the London School of Economics, as the most momentous occasion of his life. Their marital canvas in his mind was his biggest success. Jehangir Sabavala passed away on September 2, 2011. His beautiful wife of many decades stood by him all through his long battle with his ailment. The marvelous three words ‘Manashni, Gavashni and Kunashni’ – to him were the core of our religion, and impressed him the most. His contribution to the community has been through his art. It went beyond the confines of a community and spilled across the world, a gift that will stand the test of time. The Mumbai Art world will sorely miss the endearing and noble presence of Jehangir Sabavala during its exhibition openings. And so will all those who were fortunate enough to cross his path during an exceptional lifetime.

will triumph adversity

November 2012
OR A NEARLY $2 TRILLION ECONOMY, WHICH has been growing at a breathtaking pace of between eight per cent and 9.5 per cent for the better part of the decade, an expansion of six per cent appears ‘recessionary.’ Many commentators in India have now got used to wringing their hands and bemoaning that the country is fast slipping into a recession. They only need to be reminded of the fate of much of the developed world, where commentators are overjoyed when official figures indicate that the economies have moved at glacial speeds of less than one per cent; an expansion of two to three per cent would undoubtedly make headlines, and presidents and prime ministers seeking reelection would be overjoyed with such figures and possibly be voted back to power. India today ranks among the world’s top-10 economies in terms of the size of its GDP (while it adds up to $1.7 trillion if calculated as per the official exchange rate, it is $4.51 trillion in terms of purchasing power parity). There are just about 15 countries in the world with a GDP in excess of $1 trillion, and just two – India and China – growing at rates of more than five per cent.
As the size of an economy expands, growth generally slows down (even in normal times); in smaller economies, with a very small base, it is possible for GDP to expand at double-digit rates. But in large economies such as India’s, when the economy expands at rates of six per cent and 6.5 per cent, it is indeed an impressive performance. The Indian economy has taken a beating over the past two to three years because of a variety of factors. One of the key reasons for the slowdown is the general state of the world economy, where all the top countries are finding it difficult to emerge out of a recession. This impacts India’s exports – of products and services, including information technology services – but more so sentiments. Foreign investors, strapped for funds, are careful where they invest their money. In times of crisis, many investors prefer to put their money in instruments they consider safe – for instance, the US dollar, or gold. Investing in emerging markets such as India takes a back seat, both for foreign direct investors and portfolio investors. The very nature of the ruling alliance in India – a Congress-led government that has to depend on allies for support, many of who are clearly opposed to any further liberalisation – ensures that no significant reforms can be undertaken till 2014, when the term of the present parliament ends. But despite such constraints, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government led by economist-turned-politician, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has taken several key measures to deepen reforms. The government has found it difficult to get through some crucial reforms including allowing 100 per cent FDI in multi-brand retail and raising the ceiling on FDI in the insurance sector because of opposition from both partners and rivals. But in a democracy as vibrant as India’s, it is virtually unthinkable for any legislative or executive initiative to be passed without extensive debates and arguments, setting up of committees and even facing
“In a country of 1.2 trillion people, more than half are below the age of 26, giving it a huge edge over not just ageing economies of Europe, Russia and Japan, but even over China, where the population is ageing rapidly.” challenges in courts. While many in India get frustrated with such delays, the fact remains that this reflects the healthy state of its democracy – unlike in countries such as China, where government initiatives are rammed through without any challenges or debates in parliament, the popular press or in courts. India society is today in a flux, where previously ignored or exploited sections of society are gaining power. This extends the learning curve, as new social groups that have come to power take time to grasp the intricacies of a modern economy. But even parties such as the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which ruled Uttar Pradesh, the country’s largest state, for its full fiveyear term, has realised that it is only rapid economic growth that can lift millions of people out of poverty. Not surprising then that states such as Bihar, once considered a basket case, are today among the fastest-growing in the country. Last year, the state GDP expanded by a whopping 16 per cent. The growth mantra is fast catching on, especially in the poorer and backward regions of the country, where there is an amazing yearning for higher education, new jobs and new infrastructure among the local populace.
India’s biggest advantage is its population and its demographic profile. In a country of 1.2 trillion people, more than half are below the age of 26, giving it a huge edge over not just ageing economies of Europe, Russia and Japan, but even over China, where the population is ageing rapidly. In India, less than six per cent of the population is above 65, whereas 30 per cent of the population (adding up to 360 million individuals) is below the age of 14. The demographic dividend and the enormous hunger for both physical and social infrastructure – by way of roads and highways, ports and airports, power, telecommunications and housing, and education and healthcare – would ensure that the Indian economy would triumph adversity and leapfrog ahead over the coming years. Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship The Road to Success
W
Personal and business losses are inevitable on the road to success.”
ith a wealth of knowledge gained through personal experiences, and hard knocks in life and in the world of business, it is my firm belief that entrepreneurship is the key to success. So how does one define an entrepreneur? How does one define success, and how does one measure it? My definition of an entrepreneur is an individual that has the courage to suffer personal and business losses whilst pursuing a business venture. Sounds simple doesn’t it? Let us evaluate what it really means. Courage, in my opinion, is not the absence of fear but the strength to do what is right in the face of it. And believe me, most of us have far more courage than we ever dreamed we possessed. If you lack the courage to start, you are then already finished. Winners win because they have the courage and the burning desire to WIN! If you don’t have the courage, BUILD IT, else don’t get started. Personal and business losses are inevitable on the road to success. Some of you might argue – why personal losses. Because they are unavoidable and will certainly occur as you pursue your quest for entrepreneurship. Start by accepting this fact. Your business venture will be a

Leadership third-party in your marriage or relationship with your significant other, and will be a big burden on your sense of togetherness. Low energy, little or no vacation, unsteady income, missed holiday lunches, a 24x7 work schedule, balancing home and business, will all cause you to develop a sense of uncertainty and anxiety, and will lead you to doubt your biggest asset; your capability. So what is the trap in which entrepreneurs often fall? Is it lack of foresight? Do they chase their dreams with no definite plan for success? Is it that they spend too much time planning and then fail as they lack the skill and ability to execute? Is it money? I think it depends on the reasons they started down this path in the first place.
OBSTACLES TO SUCCESS
To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did. As Einstein has said “Successful people have encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds”. Where others see obstacles real entrepreneurs see opportunity. I have always felt that the most difficult part of getting to the top is getting through the crowd at the bottom. For you will find people telling you why something should not be done – and guess what, they will even sound very convincing at the time. So let us highlight the hurdles that an entrepreneur needs to be aware off before he commences on his business venture.
DEBT – Borrow as little as possible
Debt is not bad as long as one understands the repercussions. The situation that most entrepreneurs find themselves in today is a disparity between debt and equity. It is also a classic example of ‘over-leveraging’ and then of-course the age old curse - recourse v/s non-recourse debt i.e. signing personal guarantees for the debt. The loan-to-value ratios determine the strength of your holdings when confronted with a situation like the one we are in today. It also helps in refinancing the debt with an existing or even a new lender.
FEAR – Never give up your right to
be wrong The key to success is to let go of all fear, to never hold yourself back and to push

yourself to what you really want to achieve. When you face your fear most of the time you will discover that it was not really such a big threat after all. Fear does not have any special power unless you empower it by submitting to it. Most entrepreneurs fear the unknown and therefore lower their goals and aspirations instantly when faced with adversity. Let us learn from children – who I think are the best entrepreneurs of them all – they have no fear of the word NO! They forget the last transaction, however challenging it was, and are at it again, this time with even more persistence. As the great Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi once said “Freedom is not worth it if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes”.
NO GOAL SETTING – Have
consistency of purpose The secret to success is consistency of purpose as the most successful have goals and purpose. A planned three-step approach to goal setting can enable an entrepreneur develop and determine a vision for success - Where are we today, Where do we want to go, How do we get there. And in order for this to be reinforced, it must be in writing. In business what gets measured gets done. Your goals will enable you to stay focused at all times.
CHASING THE BUSINESS –
Learn to attract it It is similar to the laws of attraction Chasing the business v/s learning to attract it. You need to begin working ON the business not IN the business. It is critical to improve your effectiveness and reach by demonstrating the value of your business. For price is what one pays; value is what one gets. To attract business you only have to be 1% better but with a differentiating factor. And in order to differentiate yourself from the competition and attract business, a personal note of advice – do not attempt to fix your weakness, strength your strength!
Lack of Knowledge – Know your
employees, your customers and your business During a surprise visit at a factory, the CEO of a manufacturing company saw a young man leaning against the wall doing nothing. He went up to him and asked him “How much do you earn young man?”
The young man answered “about a $1000 a month Sir”. The CEO asked his Financial Officer to get him $2000 in cash, gave it to the young man and said “here is two months’ salary – you are fired, now get out of my factory. Around here I do not give money to people for just standing around doing nothing”. The young man was in utter shock and left as fast as he possibly could. Noticing fellow employees staring at him in disbelief he also said “and that applies to everybody in this company”. He then turned to his Financial Officer and asked him “who was this guy I just fired?” The Financial Officer replied “He was the pizza delivery guy Sir”.
NO EXIT STRATEGY – Establish
an exit criteria and monitor it In business, real wealth is normally created when entrepreneurs pass the reins of their business to another person – i.e. when they exit the business. Very few entrepreneurs have been ‘lucky’ enough to create wealth by being at the right place at the right time. The rest have planned for years and executed the plan to the best of their ability. They have prepared themselves for all eventualities and have steered their companies in a direction that compels a prospective buyer to view them seriously. An exit plan must have a strategy and a goal for it to be successful. Successful entrepreneurs plan their exits well ahead of the expected time to pass on the ‘baton’. But also let it be acknowledged that no matter how sound and robust a strategy is, it is only as good as the result it achieves. In conclusion, more people have created steady wealth by being masters of their own destiny. If I were to list a few reasons that differentiate successful entrepreneurs from unsuccessful ones they would be as follows – go with your intuition (gut-feel), overcome fear, plan or perish, stay the course, hire the right staff & reward them well, and have an exit strategy. Remember, everything that has happened to you is either an opportunity to grow or an obstacle to keep you from growing. You get to choose!

Areas where rapeseed oil supersedes olive oil: • Rapeseed is perfect for all Indian cooking. Olive oil is too much self flavoredso not well suited to Asian flavors. • The high flash point makes it perfect for vaghaars of all types. Olive oil cannot be heated to high temperatures as it then breaks down and turns into a negative oil. • Rapeseed has the same nutritional values as olive oil. • It is cheaper. • It polymerizes at a much higher temperature. However for cold foods and dressing there is nothing quite like good olive oil. Never buy hydrogenated fats or oils, margarines or any other derivatives. Cumin seeds known as jeera not only add taste to your food but are also very beneficial for the body. They are extensively used in culinary preparations. They are rich source of iron and hence very beneficial for anaemics as well as lactating mothers and pregnant women, who tend to need iron more than others. Cumin prevents indigestion, flatulence, diarrhoea, nausea and morning sickness. For immediate relief from acidity, chew a pinch-full of raw cumin seeds. Pumpkin seeds are used to treat prostrate and bladder problems, depression and learning disabilities. The seeds can improve bladder and urethra functions and help stop formation of kidney stones. • Businesses must remain relevant to changing times otherwise they will be forced to close down just as we do not see many cobblers or horse drawn carriages (Victorias) today. Customers have become extremely sensitive to time. The tolerance limit for delay has gone down. Previously they used to wait for delivery of a car or a refrigerator for more than a year. Now the customer is not willing to wait. Times have changed and the focus is on customer delight. In foreign countries, if a Jaguar car meets with an accident on the road, the company sends a policeman and an ambulance to the scene. He added: • Be willing to acquire new skills. • Get out of your comfort zone. • Develop contracting capability. • Get into premium products. • Cultivate brands and branded products and cited the example of Parsi Dairy Farm. • Be trustworthy and honest for business has to be ethical if it has to survive successfully. • Ethics and Business Excellence go hand in hand. Tata Companies follow a model called ‘Tata Business Excellence Model’. • Keep a global mindset. • Do risk management – risk of markets, technology and business. When asked what he perceives as demand for new ventures, Kishore Chaukar said: “There is tremendous scope for digitalized
content in the fields of education and entertainment and health care to cater to an ageing population, home services for cleaning homes, supply requirement for automobiles, demand for premium products e.g. cakes and chocolates. He feels that retailing will grow. When asked about the functioning of Tata group of companies, he said: “Tata’s run 98 independent companies each with its own independent board. They are linked by a Tata business model – a Tata enterprise. There are two holding companies Tata Sons Ltd. and Tata Industries Ltd. Each company pays a fee to the holding company for using the TATA name. Tata Industries looks for business opportunities. He said community is the very purpose of business. The mindset of the founder Jamsetjee Tata was to find out what will be the impact of business on the local people. The philosophy continues.

Chief Justice of India, H.E Sarosh Kapadia, in which he said that “We Zoroastrians need to revive the spirit of entrepreneurship and not rely on our past glory. In the past, our forefathers established business and industrial houses. They possessed business acumen and at the same time they were deeply committed to social causes. They contributed to nation building. We, the members of the community, need to revive the spirit of entrepreneurship. The industrial houses - Tata, Godrej, Wadia, the Shapoorji Pallonji and Thermax Group are remarkable examples of our community’s
entrepreneurial spirit, perseverance and dedicated efforts at creating wealth with integrity and observing the rule of law.” He further added that “We need more such entrepreneurs in our community who will generate employment opportunities and contribute to intergenerational equity.” To the Zoroastrian youth, he said “They should be alive to the challenges our miniscule community and our country faces.” Congratulations to Yazdi Tantra and his team for preparing such an attractive and meaningful Souvenir.

Book Review
ASHAVANS:
A Legacy of Leadership A truly commendable effort
C
REATING A HIGH END COFFEE table book calls for two distinct and not necessarily mutually exclusive elements. The first is physical and the book has to have very compelling print and paper values so that it is visually pleasing to the eye. This is easier said than done but it is a prerequisite. The contents then become paramount and must enhance the physical vehicle so that the end result is outstanding. Few enterprises of this genre reach the required level, often compromising on printing quality or levels of writing and photography so that they produce a paean to adequacy not excellence. The presentation of ASHAVANS: A Legacy of Leadership by Meher Bhesania excels on all counts. The word is derived from Avestan, a Zoroastrian theological term. It reflects a state of “possessing truth” or “possessing righteousness” and can be a goal reached even in our lives here on earth. Not only does the book become a perfect gift or keepsake but it is a tribute and a salute to the Zoroastrian community around the world and to some of its most illustrious sons and daughters. The diaspora has been so dramatic and woven of great success, all of that especially made commendable by the size of the community itself. If so many of so few can achieve so much in the realms of the arts and sciences, medicine, commerce, sport, media and the military, they deserve a book like this. While by no means exhaustive in its list, there being so many eminent Parsis, the effort is commendable. This is one of the limitations of an exercise based on listing. You have to choose a number and run with it, regrettably having to leave out equally deserving individuals, for the author the success of this venture ensuring an

enthusiastic response to a second edition if she so desires. Consequently, if the author thought that this would be an easy task she clearly underestimated the effort, co-ordination and time that is needed to bring the various pieces together and finally produce a book that does everyone proud. No wonder the book took nearly two years in the making but was worth it. The coverage has certain smoothness to the words, with the profiles of well known personalities written in a lucid and easy to read style. The fact that most of the write ups are interview based and project both empathy and insight makes for attractive reading and move away from the dusty option of writing a bibliography. The people speak makes the difference. So, whether you are reading about Chief Justice of India Sarosh Kapadia, the Godrej business family, musical genius Zubin Mehta, Field Marshal Sam Maneckshaw or cricketer Farokh Engineer, all 101 men and women written about are fascinating not just because of the sweeping range of their disciplines or the magnitude of their success but because of the common thread…they strove, to seek, to find and not to yield. With a touching and heartfelt foreword by His Holiness The Dalai Lama, the script and choice of font is smart and modern while still retaining an old world charm. While there is an occasional visual burst of originality far too many of the photos in the essays are static and a little more animation might have been welcome. But the final product is very pleasing and it is only a labour of love that would make it possible to get so many famous persons onto the pages of one book. To her credit Meher Bhesania has stayed away from being pedantic and though there is an occasional tendency to seek the
shelter of superlatives she does manage to write about real people in a way that would certainly inspire a new generation while generating bittersweet nostalgia in the older one. Indeed, the fact that some of the 101 are not with us anymore adds to the poignancy of the narrative. A Collector’s item it is, not just for those who feature in it or for just the Zoroastrian community but for all those discerning people who admire painstaking research, hard work and the pursuit of excellence and can identify with the incredibly impressive achievements recorded within. I have to say that Meher Bhesania’s foreword and the ancient plates that illustrate it are a delightful introduction to the main body of work. In short, a book that would read well and lie well on any coffee table…even if you are having tea.
