President’s Message This year has been a stupendous year for World Zarathushti Chamber of Commerce (WZCC) with many Chapters worldwide blossoming and making significant progress. On 9th January 2008, the Zoroastrian Delegation met the Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Shri Kamal Nath, at Udyog Bhavan, during the Sixth Pravasi Bharatya Divas in New Delhi. The Minister was very cordial in his reception and acknowledged the contributions of the Zoroastrians to the fabric of Indian society.
This year has been a stupendous year for WZCC with many Chapters worldwide blossoming and making significant progress
Our New York Chapter has had many significant events and their numbers have been growing. Houston has had a milestone event in conjunction with the Houston Darbe Meher tenth anniversary with Ms. Homai Daruwalla, Chairman of Central bank of India as their Keynote Speaker and likewise Chicago is holding another milestone event to celebrate Zarathushti Businesses in conjunction with their Darbe Meher twenty-fifth anniversary. India has just had their Annual General Meeting and Houston will hold the global Annual General Meeting at the end of December, 2008. Firdosh Mehta made a brief visit to Dubai, early this year, which coincided with the Annual General Meeting of WZCC Dubai Group. It is heartening to note that the Zoroastrian community in Dubai is preparing in a big way for the World Zoroastrian Congress. These are just a few of the activities worldwide, the list is endless. Our Chapters are buzzing with activities which are bound to generate enthusiasm for those Zarathushtis not already in business to look at business opportunities. This momentum needs to be continued in the spirit of our mission "to energize the Zarathushti Entrepreneurial spirit" and eventually we are bound to achieve our goal of Zarathushtis looking at business opportunities as an alternate. I express my deepest gratitude to the countless number of persons that are making this organization thrive and flourish and in particular to our Chapter Chairs and Directors who so selflessly devote their time and talent to the organization. Our SynergyZ Committee is doing an outstanding job of giving us the visibility worldwide and documenting our progress. I encourage all of you to come to Houston for our Annual General Meeting and enjoy the warm hospitality that only Houstonians are capable of. Make your plans now! Best Wishes, Bomy Boyce President WZCC
Not to be missed: Best of Broadway, glittering Persian night, Z Symphony Orchestra and the fabulous New Year’s Eve Party.
From the Regional Director- Middle East
Welcome to SynergyZ This issue of SynergyZ is packed with highly interesting articles and interviews, and gives an insight into the 9th World Zoroastrian Congress that will be held in Dubai from December 28 to 31, 2009. Zoroastrians from across the globe are excited about the Congress which is themed on solidarity, welfare and progress. The choice of the city of Dubai as the venue is highly significant, because Dubai is a living example of the qualities Zoroastrians are known for worldwide: Cosmopolitanism, Enterprise and Tolerance. Additionally, Dubai is a vibrant city, with great tourism attractions, gigantic projects like the Palm Islands and lively nightlife. The Congress will give the Zoroastrians a chance to expore business and placement opportunities in Dubai. Among the many events taking place at the Congress will be the announcement of the winners of the prestigious Congress Awards and the Youth Leadership Enhancement Program (YLEP) Awards. This issue puts the spotlight on Dr. J.J. Irani in the cover story and we discover several little known aspects of the great personality. We also get some rich insights into Dr. Villoo Morawala Patell’s success story. Finally, there are some highly interesting profiles on personalities and events. So sit back and enjoy SynergyZ! If you have any interesting stories or ideas do share them with us by writing to wzccsynergyz@gmail.com. Good Wishes, Meher Bhesania

lthough the launch of Tata’s new small car Nano – the cheapest in the world at Rs.1 lakh or US$2500 took place on January 10, 2008 SynergyZ could not resist capturing the news. The launch shook up the automobile industry in India and probably elsewhere too. It was as much a victory for India as for Tatas. For $2500, to get a car and not an apology of a car as critics were expecting; the 4 door 4 seat 34 patent 2 cylinder car, powered by a 623cc rear mounted engine meets Euro 4 (Bharat III) emission norms and has gone through standard full frontal areas test. Although it is 20 percent shorter in length than Maruti, it has 21 percent more space and runs 20km/litre. How were the Tatas able to do it? As Ratan put it, “there was no radical change, no reinvention of the manner in which a car is made. Just a host of small and medium issues made it possible.” The Nano is a watershed in independent India’s business history for two important reasons. Its affordability gives it the potential to be the most inclusive innovation
of Indian corporate sector far. For the first time in India, those on the fringes of middle class can hope to firm their aspirations of owning a car. Critics who doubt whether a $2500 car can ever meet Western standards of safety or environmental protection miss the point: this isn’t a product for the West (though its superior and costlier versions may be). It is aimed at a family of four that’s currently forced to use a motorcycle or a scooter because it can’t afford even the cheapest car on the roads and there’s no reliable public transport where it lives. The number of such families runs into millions, going by the sale of two wheelers in the country. Even a small fraction of them converting to four wheelers would ensure the success of car like Nano. Some from the big league are toying with the idea of similar low priced cars. That brings us to the second reason for regarding Nano’s development as an epochal event. It showcases the country’s ability to develop a low cost mass market engineering product. Nano is the best example yet of such engineering capabilities and comes at a critical time when automobile and
engineering companies worldwide are straining every muscle to cut costs in product development. The Tata Nano might have started as a widely misquoted dream of one man. But Ratan Tata has turned it into an opportunity to take his firm and the country to new heights.
The 2008 Olympic torch relay in Oman
n 14th April, 2008 the world focussed its attention on the Sultanate of Oman as the Olympic Torch Relay was held in Muscat spreading the message of universal harmony & peace. In all, 80 Torchbearers covered a 30 km. route and never before had the city seen so many people line up on the roads to cheer and embrace the historic run with so much passion and gaiety.Torchbearers were selected from amongst top performers in the field of sports, performing arts, government and industry leaders. Minoo Saher – Group Chief Executive Officer of Mustafa Sultan Enterprises LLC was the Olympic Torchbearer representing Samsung.
Says Minoo “This was once in a life time experience for me and I was singularly fortunate to be carrying the Olympic Torch in Oman. I was approached by Samsung, who are one of the sponsors, a few months back informing me that I was selected to be a Torchbearer in Oman and they asked for my CV. Initially, I took it quite causally not fully realizing what a huge opportunity had presented itself to me. It was only with each passing stage of preparing for the relay that the magnitude of the event got to me and ofcourse, the actual experience was even more profound.
A Bright Prospect for 2008: Rusi Gandhi Receives RE/MAX 100% Club Circle of Excellence Award.
RUSI Gandhi Rusi Gandhi received RE/MAX's 100% Club Circle of Excellence Award in the first quarter of 2008. Celebrations for the Award were held in February in Atlantic City. Real estate is developing as never before around the world and Rusi gives strong voice to this trend. Rusi offered prospects for global industry growth as a WZCC (World Chamber of Commerce) World Director in Mumbai's 2007 AGM meetings. Speaking to about 200 attendees, Rusi outlined six major initiatives for India's real estate industry. Subsequent to his remarks, young real estate entrepreneurs from

across the world flocked to his kitchen table for a wise word or two about their dreams and ambitions. In a brilliant recent deal, Rusi concluded a seven-figure commercial property deal for acquisition of a thriving business and its real estate. Commercial deals remain more active at present than residential deals: A lively deal for a multi-million scientific testing laboratory is on Rusi's desk now. Man of action, man of thought, Rusi confers with leading economic and financial thinkers. In a gathering addressed by the eminent economist John B. Taylor, 2001- 2005 U.S. Treasury Under Secretary for International Affairs, Rusi discussed the state of America's housing market. He also discussed India's hoursing industry with a senior executive from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and developer of India's futures exchanges. Rusi is a member of the International Real Estate Federation, FIABCI, which allows him to buy and sell property in 62 foreign countries. His worldwide travel as a World Director for the WZCC helps in building North American and international associations. The past is prelude to the future in Rusi's case: He began his real estate career while thriving in the face of a 23% interest-rate! Rusi's success --- Realtor, Developer, Investor --- give a bright prospect in 2008.

er life reads like a best selling novel. Meet the incredibly facinating model woman entrepreneur Dr. Villoo Morawala - Patell of Avesthagen Ltd. biotechnology company she founded in Bangalore in 2000 to provide solutions to agriculture and health disorders. It is now one of India’s leading life sciences company. The knowledge based firm is now set to float a Rs. 1,200 crore IPO (Initial Public Offering) by the end of 2008.
or years, scientists have been trying to find out the secret behind the longevity of Zoroastrians. Generally speaking, it is acknowledged that Zoroastrians live 20 years longer than other Indians. So far, no scientist or life science expert has been able to find an exact answer to the Zoroastrians’ tendency to live long. It looks like it needed another Zoroastrian to make the first real attempt to decode the Zoroastrian longevity gene.
In recognition of her entrepreneurial work in the field of biotechnologies, the French government honoured her with the Officer de l’Ordre National de Merite (Office of the National Order of Merit) in May 2008. The Bombay Parsi Panchayat lauded her great achievement, and hailed her as a model woman entrepreneur in a world where less than 2 per cent of top business positions are held by women.
Villoo Morawala-Patell is a scientist cum entrepreneur who is getting closer to the goal of taking a first truly scientific look at the Zoroastrian gene through the Avesthagenome Project, an ambitious systems biology project that involves collecting blood samples of 15,000 Zoroastrians, with the ultimate goal of finding answers to the secrets of Zoroastrian longevity.
Villoo’s unparalleled research into biotechnologies is the result of her lifelong passion for ‘doing something more to change the world.’ She did her schooling as a boarder in St. Anne’s Secunderabad. She completed her science graduation from

St. Francis College and postgraduation in medical biochemistry from Sophia College, Bombay. After her marriage at 22, she worked for ten years at the International Crop Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics before opting for higher studies in France where she did her doctorate in plant molecular biology from the University of Louis Pasteur.
How is the blood sampling done? A total of 50ml of blood per person is collected in nine small aliquota in vials and treated to preserve for posterity the DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid), the molecular basis of heredity, and RNA (Ribonucleic Acid), the expressing gene. One of the tubes is set aside for extraction of haematopoetic stem cells. Photographs of some participants’ face and hands are also taken, as creativity is expressed through hands. While significant biocomputing powers have been put in place, Villoo says it is critical to collaborate with partners. Already, collaboration has been established with Sun Microsystems and Affymetrix, for getting tools and instruments for experimental and computing power. “Avesthagen is an innovation driven company that will deliver products for predictive, preventive personalized healthcare,” says Villoo Morawala Patell. “It is a pipeline company where there will be a continuous stream of products in bioPharmaceuticals, bioNutrition and bioAgriculture. This will ensure sustainability for the future of the company and lead towards a better world.”
Villoo Morawala with her husband Zareer and daughter Sanaya (left) and Farah (right)
On her return to India, she did not feel comfortable in Hyderabad, the city of her roots, and decided to relocate to Bangalore. The seeds of Avesthagen were first sown in her mind during that period. Her original idea was to set up a public-private enterprise that would bring together the government and venture capitalists, but the response was lukewarm. She then went ahead on her own, and set up Avesthagen (Avestha Gengraine Technologies Private Limited). Avesthagen’s contribution has been extraordinary to date. After developing draught tolerant rice and engineering many other varieties as well, Avesthagen has earned 160 patents of all kinds, 25 of them being core patents and the rest non-core. The company has set up strategic business units in biopharmaceuticals and bionutritionals. It has collaborated with right partners for access to and exchange of technology and overall commercial expertise. Needless to say, the project very dear to Villoo’s heart is the Avesthagenome Project, which will compile a genetic, genealogical and medical database of the Zoroastrian community. As a first step, over 2,000 Zoroastrians from Hyderabad-Secunderabad and Navsari took part in the project, getting themselves photographed and filling out the 30-page questionnaire. The choice of Hyderabad-Secunderabad was appropriate because she spent several years of her life there. Her paternal grandfather, Dinshawji Morawala, came from Surat to Bidar to work in the Nizam territory as a Tax Collector. Her father, Data Morawala, also settled there, and her husband, Zaheer Patell, lives there as well. The response in Navsari, where her mother Daulat’s (nee Kasad) family is based, was overwhelming, with over 100 volunteers offering their services. The next phase will be covering Bombay and the target is to cover 15,000 by the end of 2008.
Dr. Villoo Morawala - Patell negotiates a few questions
Rapid fire Why did you choose Biotechnology as your field of specialization? I gravitated towards Medical Biochemistry for my M.Sc, followed by a Ph.D in Mitochondrial genomes because it was the basis of life and that was fundamental to the study of the basis of life on earth as we know it. Did you receive support from your family? Yes, I did receive full moral support from my family. Tell us a little bit about your family. We are a small family, my husband, Zareer Patell, is the only child and a jazz musician and fitness expert. I have two girls, Farah and Sanaya, and they provided the most support to me. I have my wonderful parents, Dara and Daulat Morawala, who have stood by me with their tremendous confidence in me. I have a sister, Bakhtawar, and brother, Mahiyar. All wonderful and talented people. Who has been the most influential person in your life? Mahatma Gandhi and Steve Jobs and my parents Tell us briefly about the women who have inspired you. Indira Gandhi Tell us briefly about Avesthagen and its future Avesthagen is an innovation driven company that will deliver products for predictive, preventive personalized healthcare. It is a pipeline company where there will be a continuous stream of products in bioPharmaceuticals, bioNutrition and bioAgriculture. This will ensure sustainability for the future of the company and lead towards a better world. What’s your message to our young entrepreneurs? Evolve at the pace of the world, the mother earth because she speaks and gives you the direction. Be a step ahead in your ideas so that you can build a new tomorrow. Work smart with sincerity and persevere.

The company is said to be the largest venture funded biotech startup company in India, with about $42-44 million raised from firms like Fidelity Funds (Mauritius) Limited, New York Life Investment Management India Fund and a group of strategic investors like bioMeriuex SA, Vilmorin and Cie, and Daninvest.com SA (Group Danone). Indian corporates like Godrej, Meditab (Cipla Group), the Tata Group and ICICI Venture Funds have also extended support to the venture. As founder promoter, Villoo holds 31 per cent stake in Avesthagen. Her elder daughter, Farah Morawala Patell-Socha, who is doing her final year of doctorate in plant cell biology from Cambridge, and her younger daughter, Sanaya, who is set to do her doctorate in molecular biology from Cambridge University, serve as directors on Avesthagen board. The success of Avesthagenome Project will crown a lifetime of outstanding contribution to society and medical community by Villoo Morawala Patell. And she appears to be in a hurry to complete it, as, to put it in her own words, “As Zoroastrians are known to be an ageing community, we need to get the elderly fast before it is too late.”

their own manufacturing enterprises in the SME sector. Some of the trainees were employed but had plans to set up their own business in a related field. The group also included a few second and third generation entrepreneurs who were looking after the businesses established by their fathers or grandfathers and had chalked out their own growth plans. Interestingly Hormaz and Aviva Padole from Pune, probably the youngest in the group, Aviva is only 17 years old, were fifth generation entrepreneurs running their 100 year old watch retail business in Pune. Despite the diversity in their businesses the common goal of all was to grow their Business.

F
ormer Indian Army chief Field Marshal Sam Hormushi Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, the architect of India’s 1971 military victory over Pakistan died at Wellington in Tamil Nadu on 27th June 2008 after developing acute bronchopneumonia. He was 94. Manekshaw is survived by his daughters Maja Daruwala and Sherry Batliwala. His wife Siloo passed away in 2001. The government accorded a state funeral, complete with 21 gun salute. Sam Bahadur, as he was affectionately called by the troops, who served under him, was the architect and the inspiring leader of the operations and the consequent military victory in what is now Bangladesh. Military historians will forever record the strategic brilliance and the inspirational leadership of Sam Bahadur, the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said in a condolence message. His demise has left behind a void that will be really hard to fill. Sharp and witty till the end imbued with an indomitable fighting spirit he will continue to live in the minds of committed citizens and will inspire them to take the nation forward. Born in Amritsar on April 3, Manekshaw belonged to the first batch of 40 cadets to be selected for the Indian Military Academy and was commissioned into the 12 Frontier Force Rifles (later the Gurkha Rifles) on February 4, 1934. A graduate of London’s Imperial Defence College, Manekshaw served in a series of senior positions during his career. He was the Indian Army Chief from 1969 to 1973. He was made field marshal just before retirement in 1973. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award and won the Military Cross for his role in Mayanmar during the Second World War when he was wounded. Twenty five years ago, at the golden jubilee passing out parade of the Indian Military Academy at Dehradun, a newly commissioned second lieutenant picked up the courage to ask Maneskhaw: “Sir where do you get the strength of your character from?” From my school, son” he replied indulgently, but there was a deeper meaning to that because he is known to have told at least one close confidante that it was his years at Nainital’s Sherwood College more than anything else that prepared him for his future life.
Each of these sessions was made very interactive with a lot of comments, observations and questions from the participants. Opportunities were also provided to the trainees to make presentations on selected topics with reference to their own businesses. For the presentations the participants were divided into three groups. While everyone was encouraged to prepare his or her presentation, from each group only one participant had to make the presentation. The topics for the presentation were SWOT Analysis of Your Business and Calculation of NPV. The presentations generated a lot of interest and provided an opportunity for networking among the participants. The Audio Visual Presentation of NEN also invoked interest in the participants and provided an insight into the experiences of high Flyers like Nandan Nilekani, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw and other successful entrepreneurs. As most small and medium businesses are one-man shows with the promoter assuming multifarious activities and the ensuing stresses and strains, an entire morning session was devoted to Stress Audit conducted by Prof. D M Pestonjee, ex-Professor, IIM Ahmedabad. This session also invoked a lot of interest as it helped the trainees get an insight into their own strengths and weaknesses and attitudes and skills which need to be enhanced to make their businesses run smoothly on the path to Growth. The valedictory session on the last day started off with sharing of experiences with successful entrepreneurs. During this session Mr. P. P. Kharas, Mumbai Chapter Chair, made a power point presentation on his experiences of starting and shaping Ecoplast, a plastic film manufacturing unit. This was followed by a presentation by Mr. Rushad Ginwalla on his experiences in starting a chain of restaurants, Mirch Masala, at Ahmedabad and other centres. At the end of the session certificates were given to the participants by the two speakers. The session ended with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Ms. Dolly Dhamodiwala. The success of the program can be gauged from the great deal of networking among the participants, one of the major fall outs of the program and the interest it generated in WZCC and its activities. There were several requests for more such programs at different locations. 17
The World Zoroastrian Congress, one of the largest community events for Zoroastrians around the world, will be held in Dubai from December 28 to 31, 2009, under the signature theme –“Unity through the sands of time”. The choice of Dubai as the venue is highly significant. Dubai is one of the world’s most talked-about destinations, a vibrant business hub and a melting pot of cultures. It is also one of the most progressive and cosmopolitan cities in the world. The selection of Dubai as the venue for the World Zoroastrian Congress is a salute to Zoroastrians as a community which, like the city, has shown tremendous progressiveness and innovation, while retaining old charm and cultural values. Selecting Dubai also sends a message to the Zoroastrian entrepreneurs to explore the possibilities of doing business in the UAE. And, most importantly, Dubai is home to over 1,500 Zoroastrians! The Congress will promote solidarity, welfare and progress, by looking beyond the present to herald a glorious future, in the true Zoroastrian tradition. Historically, Zoroastrians have shown exceptional zeal in serving humanity worldwide. More significantly, wherever Zoroastrians have emigrated they have promoted commerce and professional services. Diary of Events & Personalities Be it in product or retail it’s all about passion for excellence and believing that the customer is always right
BOMI Motiwalla A man, who inspires, empowers and motivates, yet so humble and affable. That’s Bomi Motiwalla, a prominent figure in business circles and one of the early settlers in Dubai. Born in Aden, Bomi received his primary and college education in India. He specialized in the field of electronics from Xavier’s Mumbai and joined the family business in Aden at the age of nineteen years. In line with the family’s vision to reach higher goals, they ventured into the field of electronics and set up a store. The store had large assorted brands such as Sansui, Pioneer, Bang and Olfsen, Akai, National Panasonic, EMI and Phillips Records. Bomi tried to build the business using hands-on approach and attention to detail. “Be it in product or retail it’s all about passion for excellence and believing that the customer is always right”, says Bomi. The family business prospered a lot in Aden. However in 1967 they started to face difficulties there and had to diversify. Dubai was chosen as an alternative location. In 1970 their family business was taken over by the Ruling Government in Aden. Bomi arrived in Dubai soon after his marriage to Deena nee Mulla in 1970. Their first family business along with their partners was a fine dining restaurant called “Sahara”. When the family saw that Dubai was transforming itself into a metropolis they soon started Gulf Dairies in the U.A.E which
made re-constituted milk and by products and the first news bulletin in English called “Recorder” came into existence. After that, a high end sophisticated departmental store called Allied Enterprises was established opposite the Dubai Creek. Here, “the best of the world”, luxury items like crystal, perfumes, household articles, clothing etc. was sold. Customers waited for months on end for the annual sale at “Allieds”. It was a difficult selection for them considering the originality of the designs, in various items displayed at the store, but those who enjoyed having beautiful objects in their homes did bag full of shopping. That same year, 1970, Bomi and his partners founded Allied Electronics. The company represented famous Brands such as TEAC, TOA, Acoustic Research Speakers, Roland, Kawai, DAIKIN Airconditioners, Nordmende TV, Montarbo, Suzuki musical instruments, EMI and Philips records and cassettes. In 1980, Allied Electronics was bought over by his partner. In the past few years, Bomi’s business has diversified into Trading of Building Materials, such as timber, MDF Boards, plywood and acrylic sheets. He also deals in furniture fittings and electrical accessories. Bomi is an active member of ‘The Rotary Club of Dubai’ and ‘The World Trade Centre Club’ since it was first established. Bomi has fulfilled all his responsibilities with aplomb. He is a caring husband, loving father and a loyal friend. His strength emanates from his lovely wife Deena. When Darius and Laila, his two children, were growing up, Bomi devoted a lot of time to them. Every day over dinner, he would take out time to update himself on what they were doing and encouraged them to further expand their horizon. He took the word “impossible” out of his children’s vocabulary and inspired them to see the world as a place of limitless opportunities where one could make things happen, not because one was wealthy but because one had the courage, boldness and initiative. In doing so, he has bequeathed them a legacy far more precious than what any wealth can bestow. Bomi’s favorite games are cricket, hockey and football. He captained the Hockey Team in his school. Even today he talks with great passion about these games if you can catch him free on any afternoon. Based in Dubai, Bomi has enjoyed considerable success as a Business man. His practical approach will be an inspiration to any aspiring executive.

nature and delightful sense of humour can only add balance and proportion to the intense and earnest Deena. It is a pleasure indeed to talk to either of them separately or both of them together. Their home in Jumairah is no glittering designer house, but a home in the real sense of the word with a lovely garden which so clearly reflects their personalities - with plenty of light, air and space, with warmth and easy informality.
Deena Motiwalla
Deena is one rare personality in Dubai who has not got caught up in the magic web of a larger than life image. Obviously, she has found much more meaning in life, than her mere social image, where she carries herself with poise and dignity. Here is a woman who is in touch with herself and cares for people with whom she interacts.
“I am a daughter, a wife, a mother, a woman, and a Zoroastrian. Each of these identities is important to me.” How succinctly Deena says it all. This is exactly what she is and what she stands for.
Firdosh Mehta visits Dubai
She is the resurgent face of feminism of modern Dubai. She speaks with sincerity, forthrightness and commitment that has always left a feeling in others, she is for real. She is a delight to interact with: intelligent, incisive and one who shares her feelings and beliefs with candor and integrity. Deena is originally from India. After completing her degree in World Affairs at Hartwell House, House of Citizenship, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, (a college affiliated to Oxford) she left for England in 1959 to study at the Goethe Institute in Brilon Westfalen, Germany. She returned in 1960 to Bombay to be with her family who had a successful business under the name of D.S.Mulla Consultants. With her fluency in German she soon joined the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce, first ever Indo-foreign Chamber to be opened in India. In 1970, Deena got married and joined her husband, Bomi, whose family already had business in Dubai. With her keen interest in serving the community she soon joined various focused groups and associations in Dubai, (the Indian Sports Club, now India Club; Petroleum Wives Club, and the Dubai Country Club which recently closed down; and formed the first Dubai College Parent’s Committee). She did a lot of social work as a Committee Member upto late eighties and still continues to do so with several other organisations.

Firdosh Mehta, the immediate Past President of FEZANA and WZCC International Board Member, stopped briefly in Dubai on his way to the US early this year. An interesting function was arranged by WZCCME group members at the Taj Palace hotel. Firdosh presided as the Chief Guest. Firdosh gave an inspiring speech to members who were present at the meeting. He spoke on “FEZANA” (The Federation of Zoroastrian Associations of North America), which serves as a coordinating body for 25 Zoroastrian associations throughout the United States and Canada, and how it promotes the study, understanding and knowledge of the Zoroastrian faith in North America, and carries out community welfare, philanthropic and charitable activities world wide, through an elaborate committee structure. He praised the FEZANA Journal Team for bringing out a fine publication circulated to 22 countries. He also touched on the history of the early formation of ZCC from a FEZANA Committee and it’s subsequent world wide acceptance as the WZCC. This proved to be of great interest to the professionals and businessmen who were present at the meeting. Firdosh encouraged everyone to whole heartedly support the Congress in Dubai, and expressed his personal commitment of support.
Deena is an avid garderner and presently heads the Dubai Gardening Group. In 1991, she went to Bahrain at the invitation of the Bahrain Flower Show Committee as a Judge. Few years later, she organised a Flower Show under the theme “Mother and Child” at the Metropolitan Hotel, Dubai. She invited about six florists to send in their arrangements. They were later auctioned. The winning Flower Arrangement was gifted to the Children’s Ward at the Al Wasl Hospital the monies raised were given to Al Noor Centre for children with special needs, to which Her Royal Highness Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, wife of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE, and Ruler of Dubai has given her kind support and guidance, and is the ‘Honorary Patron’ of the Centre. Since 2000, Deena is the Co-Chairperson of Children’s Hope Foundation, a registered charity organised to help children around the world. She is also a Working Committee Member of The Emirates Parsee Working Group. Deena’s striking countenance distinguishes her in the vast spectrum of roles she plays in her daily life. Her husband Bomi gives her both the support and the space. Bomi’s keen mind, seemingly easy-going
Deena Motiwalla presented a shawl to Firdosh on behalf of the WZCCME group. The evening continued with the rest of the programs including a whirling skirt dance show and ended with mega raffle prizes and sumptuous dinner. 25

RUSSI Patel
Generally a simple down-to-earth person, Russi Patel to some is rightly acclaimed as a thinker and a scholar. He is well regarded for his diligence and his academic approach to work, as well as his accessibility and unassuming disposition.
Many awards and honors have been conferred upon Russi. Russi started his professional career in late 50’s after qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in India. In the year 1962 he went to Aden and opened an office in the name of Patel & Co. In a short period he established a name for himself. However, due to political unrest in Aden, Russi had no option but to leave Aden in the year 1968. Fortunately he had a professional auditor’s license in Sharjah which helped him to settle in the UAE. He opened his office in Dubai and has never looked back. In 1975, BDO International, a worldwide network of public accounting firms, appointed Patel & Co., as its representative in the UAE. Currently, BDO is the world’s fifth largest international accounting organization and Russi is a member of its Council.

So goes the saying - that a man’s destiny revolves around the company he works for. In the case of Shapoor M. Bhathela, this is very true. As the General Manager of Ajmal Perfumes he simply cannot be seen detached from this company. Ajmal today has evolved into a multiproduct, multi-brand corporate and is seen as the single-most leader as a Fragrance House based in the Middle East and a benchmark in the industry. WZCC Global AGM in Pune a Grand Success “Nothing is impossible. Why are we pessimistic about our community? We still have the fire in us!”

he Zarathushti community has been at the forefront of pioneering entrepreneurship in India for over 200 years. Sir Jamshedji Jeejeebhoy was called the Merchant Prince of Mumbai, the Wadias were the first shipbuilders, and Jamsetji Tata started making steel despite being ridiculed by the British. Today, we’re celebrating the launch of the Nano by Ratan Tata! Not just business, but the Zarathushti spirit of enterprise has touched all of society’s concerns – medical, educational, social, cultural – with a host of public service institutions.
but vision with action can change the world.”
The World Zarathushti Chamber of Commerce (WZCC), a global body for entrepreneurs and professionals, started in 2000, hosted a two-day event in Pune (Jan 12/13), to celebrate the Zarathushti spirit of enterprise.
At the start of the evening, Adi Engineer, Pune Chapter Chair, asserted, “Enterprise is the soul of growth for the community and country. This is a wonderful time for Zarathushti youth to come to the forefront of enterprise and fulfill the promise made by our forefathers of enriching society like the proverbial pinch of sugar in the glass of milk!”
12th January 2008 Flagging off the event was a factory visit to Tata Motors, where the sophisticated manufacturing process, complimented with superlative arrangements, made it a morning to remember. A Gala Night was held at the Ladies’ Club, where the WZCC’s Honorary Membership was conferred upon Dr. J J Irani, former Tata Steel MD and Director, Tata Sons. In his keynote address, Dr. Irani stressed, “Vision without action is a mere dream, action without vision is a waste of time,
elaborated, “Every time I talk to someone, a new idea crops up. The pool of ideas is so rich that we’re sitting on a pot of gold.” Rohinton Rivetna, the WZCC’s Immediate Past President, cautioned: “The Zarathushti spirit of enterprise is in a state of slumber. We need to awaken the giant.” Minoo Shroff, President of the India Chamber, urged budding entrepreneurs to break out of their shell. “After all, everybody began small,” he explained.

We still have the fire in us!” Phil Madon, Australia Chapter Chair, while outlining the process for the WZCC Annual Recognition Awards, reiterated: “No dreamer is ever too small – no dream is ever too big.”
“No dreamer is ever too small – no dream is ever too big.” The Annual Recognition Awards were conferred upon Dr. Roshan Bhappu (Outstanding Zarathusthti Professional), Khodi Irani (Outstanding Zarathushti Entrepreneur) and Shayan Italia. Originally from Pune, Khodi Irani, now settled in the US with his own thriving engineering business, was delighted to have come down to personally accept the honour. He confessed: “Entrepreneurship is a way of life and a cocktail of belief, confidence, a great idea, lack of resources, and many sleepless nights! The evolution of Zarathushti enterprise comes from Zarathushti philanthropy. Years ago, the late Jehangir Daruwalla donated money for engineering seats at Sangli and countless Zarathushti engineers like me owe our careers to him.” Adding a touch of entertainment was actor Bomi Dotivala of ‘Munnabhai…’ fame, with his lovely wife, Dolly, and their talented team, bringing the house down with their Adi Marazban-inspired skits. A sumptuous buffet dinner followed.
Chair Firdosh Mehta. Post-lunch, dynamic group interactions across varied interest groups like manufacturing, services, finance, and so on, moderated by WZCC International Director, Zareen Karani Araoz, saw several business connections being explored by WZCC members. Zarine Commissariat, the WZCC’s Corporate Secretary, ably compered the event on both days, and WZCC’s Directors, along with several participating Chapter Chairs and delegates from all over the world, pitched in with their inputs. However, the resounding success of the event was thanks to the untiring efforts of the committed team of the Pune Chapter, with several young members volunteering their time and talent. philosophy of colors, miniatures, abstract, historical paintings as well as portraits.
When most people buy a painting depending on whether it matches with the color of the walls, the curtains or sofa set, Jimmy was in Dubai with a mission to help people appreciate good art. He always says – “My art is for humanity and I want to show the world that there is more to art than just buying and selling.” Born on 13th August 1954, in Larlai Baluchistan, Pakistan, in a Zoroastrian family, Jimmy Engineer has grown up to break all the barriers of caste, creed and religion. After completing his studies in Lahore and spending 3 years in National College of Arts, he turned professional in 1976. His equal relevance to the rich as well as poor, literate or illiterate, religious or atheistic, speaks volumes for his dedication and honesty. Although an artist by profession, his true passions in life are his fellow human beings and their welfare. A lot of people call him a “social worker” because Jimmy has done over 50 walks to support causes and spread awareness about issues like poverty,
Jimmy has painted extensively in his life, having done over 3000 works. Many of his paintings are in private collections in Italy, France, Yugoslavia, Japan, Australia, Singapore, Sweden, Nairobi, Belgium, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Korea, Sri Lanka, Germany, USA and Pakistan. Jimmy exhibited 65 limited edition prints of his paintings in Dubai and was more than happy with the response he garnered during his visit. “I had come on a goodwill trip to Dubai. The main purpose was to show people the art of excellence – that art can help humanitarian causes.”

Check That You Have The Right Idea
Get Financial Backing for your Idea
Develop a Detailed Business Plan Practice Your Net-Working
Assessing Your Entrepreneurial Profile Do You Have What It Takes? There is great deal of romance surrounding the notion of being an entrepreneur, not everyone has the aptitude. It is important to understand that there is nothing wrong with not being an entrepreneur. This world functions well because of them, but it would not be as successful if it were peopled solely with entrepreneurs. Nevertheless, there are some general personality traits that are key for being an entrepreneur. If the following list seems to fit your personality, you may have what it takes: • I am persistent, with a great deal of drive and stamina. • I see problems as opportunities. • I have a good intuitive sense and thrive on new ideas. • I tend to rebel against authorities, I want to be my own boss. • I am positive, communicate well and enjoy working with people. • I have strong need to succeed both f inancially and otherwise. • I am not afraid to make mistakes and I learn from them.
How can I be sure I have got what it takes? Before quitting your job and using your savings to start a business, you owe it to
Plan your Marketing & PR
yourself to approach your entrepreneurial venture with some practicality. Take a more in-depth personality test and talk to small business advisors, who are often available at no or low cost through various business associations.
• Being a Good promoter (Marketing, Sales, PR). • Being Good to yourself.
How much money will I need?
Make it happen:
Whether you want to buy an existing business, purchase a franchise, start your company or merely offer services to others from a home office. Starting your business depends on first knowing the numbers. People in the same or similar businesses are a good source of information. Use your ingenuity to find out what it cost them to get started and how did they manage to get funds. Other sources include trade association, franchise organizations, business articles in magazines or newspapers. Internet search or business consultants are also a good source.
Check That You Have The Right Idea: If you have got a great new idea and no competition is insight, you must be sure that the product/service will be of value to customer at the price at which you can afford to sell it.
Besides being an idea person, whatelse do I need to be good at?
Success in a new enterprise depends on dedication and the consistent application of GOOD BUSINESS PRINCIPLES. Some of these principles include: • Being Good with Money. • Being Good with People (investors, suppliers, employees, etc.) 32
Many entrepreneurs burn out before their business takes hold. In this game, pacing yourself and your business is important.
If your aim is to enter a field with established competition, you have to undertake SWOT Analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) of yourself and that of your competition. You have to be certain that you can provide a better product/service at a competitive price. Finding out all these things is called, “MARKET RESEARCH”. You will need to do a thorough job of it to succeed. Develop a Detailed Business Plan: This is the key to building a successful business. Having a well-considered and systematic plan allows you to recognize problems as they arise in time to be able to take corrective action. The plan should be a living document, flexible over time to adapt changes in Market Place and in your Industry. It should include sections on
every facet of your business, whether you are a proprietor or an Executive Director of a new manufacturing venture A GOOD VIABLE BUSINESS PLAN IS MANDATORY. Get Financial Backing for your Idea: Take your ideas and business plan to a variety of people, starting with friends and close supporters. Be prepared for critical feedbacks and be flexible. Take the inevitable first few comments of “NO THANKS” s opportunities to fine tune the next presentations. One of hallmarks of an entrepreneur is the ability to regroup, rethink and reach the goal in another way. Seeking publicity for your business is a way not only to notify potential customers but also to get the attention of possible investors. The more people who know about your idea, better the chances that you will attract the right investor. Be willing to share a portion of the company with the right partners, but we wary (watchful) of finance companies and investors who want full control, or the lion’s share of the proceeds. Consider entering a joint venture with another company or POSITION your company to attract start-up funds from Government sources. Practice Your Net-Working: Being an entrepreneur does not mean being a lone ranger. Being successful often depends on your ability to net-work with potential customers, suppliers, new investors and those in Government who control certain aspects of the business environment. Plan your Marketing & PR: An integral part of your business plan involves a marketing plan, how you intend to create the demand for your product/service. Market Research can tell you the “WHAT” and “WHERE” of your opportunities the Marketing Plan outlines the steps by which you will find potential customers and convince them to buy from you. NETWORKING is a form of Marketing and promotion, whereas Advertising & PR are others. Ensure you have the Right Financial & Management Support: Many a time’s entrepreneurs are better at ideas than at managing budgets, business operations and employees. Anticipate that you will need more capital than you have reckoned on at the start and do not be
lavish with spending beyond the company’s means. If you find yourself in a questionable position, make sure you have the network of trusted and experienced advisors to help you see the proper perspective.
Common mistakes Setting Up Equal Partnership: Entrepreneurs often share the start-up responsibilities with a partner or partners. However, sharing 50/50 or by thirds or quarters is a big mistakes, because conflicts will inevitably arise and need someone in controlling position to make a final decision. Chose or employ a CEO, someone with experience and skills needed for success and give that person a greater decision making authority and a better salary, even if it is only higher by a small margin. Having inadequate people and
Success in a new enterprise depends on dedication and the consistent application of good business principles planning: Entrepreneurs MUST become strong managers when the company gets going. Many businesses fail because the people in charge do not have managerial qualities or strengths to cope with the challenges. Besides stress also can cause personal issues to arise which makes the challenge doubly difficult. Personality assessments can determine if you are cut out for a managerial position. Managerial training can prepare you for your new role as an executive. Without proper market research and a professional business plan, a business is more likely to fall. The more advanced preparation that is done, better are the chances for success. Relying too heavily on one or two customers: Having too few customers makes your business vulnerable, because it ties your future decisions of other organizations. If their business falters, 33
it puts your hard work and dedication at risk, through no fault of your own. The advice of personal financial consultants is appropriate here. Having more customers, even though none of them are gigantic, is healthier in the long run. Causing cash flow troubles through insufficient financing: While some people are successful at jump-starting their own enterprise with little or no outside investment, they do so by being fortunate, being modest in their spending and by plough profits back into business. The majority of businesses, however, do not deliver the projected first year sales volume. It is better to overestimate your need for capital resources at the beginning and to underestimate your projected sales figures. It is better to be pleasantly surprised at your success than to lose the business and your house because the money is not there when it is needed. When contemplating an expansion of your business, be wary of spiraling costs. If you are in a cyclical business or one vulnerable to recession, be sure to be very calculating about your expenses and develop “PLAN B” well before you need to implement it. Failing to admit mistakes: Entrepreneurs are sometimes the last admit that their idea has not the spark it once did. Having advisors that you trust is important, either on payrolls or on contracts. Be willing to cut your losses and move on if your advisors all agree that they should. Doing so may save the company, if you, can move quick enough to capitalize from your mistakes, or shift the product/service to take advantage of other opportunities. Understanding the Competition: Your competition will not stand still for long, once you have demonstrated their weaknesses in the market place with your product/service. Expect them to plug the hole quickly and even try to outflank you in the process. Your business and marketing plans should anticipate how to deal with new initiatives from your competition. If you conduct ongoing research, product/service evaluations and marketing campaigns, you should always be one step ahead of competition.

& Choreographer
As a boarder in the school a lot of emphasis was placed on all round development and it was in my school days that I got involved in dance choreography. Every year I choreographed annual shows for the Zoroastrian Youth Association, Pune. So it’s purely god’s gift to me. Dancing in front of mirrors and watching a lot of dance movies and videos made me realize how good I was at art. It also made me see my mistakes and made me a better dancer and a choreographer.
Dancer
Any special projects you would like to tell us about There have been lots of projects I’ve worked on but to name a few special ones, I have had the opportunity to work with many stars such as Mallika Sherawat, Ayesha Takia Akshaye Khanna. This was for the movie Shaadi Se Pehle produced by Mukta Arts (Subhash Ghai) for the song bijuriya bijuriya. I have made Kareena Kapoor dance to my choreography in a very small song sequence that I did for ‘Milenge Milenge’ which is unreleased. I also choreographed the 10th Grasim Mr. India in 2004. But what I enjoy most is to perform live with my troupe called KC.
What does KC stand for? KC stands for ‘Khambata Creative’. There are 14 members who I call my jewels because they are very precious to me. They are exclusively my dancers and they are my family. The dancers are kept in the groove 365 days a year by training sessions held twice a week for 4 hours.
Have you developed any distinct dance style? My unique style is a fusion of contemporary and modern dancing, which I call “Underground”. I try and do the “Underground” in all the shows for my audiences. As a choreographer you have be a creative, a good thinker, a team person and of course an exceptionally good dancer. If one has these qualities, then please don’t wait!
What are your future plans? My future plans are to do a lot of movies. I believe that if given a chance I would like to leave a mark on the Bollywood film industry.
The auditoriums reverberate with thunderous applause ‘Encore! Encore!’ when the electrifying dancers put up stunning performance that are choreographed by Hormuzd Khambatta. SynergyZ met up with this young Zoroastrian 24 years old and here are the excerpts:

very day as the rising sun paints the world's horizons for all to enjoy, there are many who do not share in this simple beauty of nature, as their vision is eclipsed by blindness. To step into this dark void and take action in making a difference in the lives of those around us, is called Operation Eyesight. The goal of this program is to meet the need for vision care by providing intended beneficiaries with properly calibrated lenses. To recycle used eyeglasses is a time tested, simple and effective way to accomplish this objective.
The journey of Operation Eyesight started at the 7th World Zoroastrian Congress held in Houston, Texas. To continue with this legacy the next milestone is the 9th World Zoroastrian Congress that is scheduled to take place from 28th-31st December 2009.
