Welcome to the August edition of Your Child in Whittlesea! We have our first Kids Corner Competition this month! The competition is open to all Whittlesea kids who would like the chance to win a Father’s Day gift for their Dad this year. One lucky winner will receive a $60 voucher from one of our wonderful advertisers. See our Kids Corner on page 20 for more details. The closing date for entries is the 20th of August, so get creating.... The days are getting slightly longer, although the weather has been rather unpredictable. Everyone seems to be waiting eagerly for the first days of spring, the sunshine and warmer weather. Talking about the temperature, I remember when one of my kids was around 3 or 4-years-old, he had a neighbourhood friend named Diggory. One winters day, I looked out our window at the outside temperature gauge, and announced to the family that it was 15 degrees outside. My son turned to me with a slightly amazed, yet quizzical, look on his face and said, “15 Diggorys outside?” Priceless! This has become a bit of a family joke now! SCHOOL OF THE MONTH Plenty Valley Christian College Each year Plenty Valley Christian College provides an opportunity for students to experience another part of the world, and in a small way, contribute to it. This year we had year 10 and 11 students visit East Timor, Vanuatu, Darwin, Thailand, and our very own Melbourne City. What they experienced during these trips was life changing.
In Thailand the group spent most of their time in an orphanage, teaching English and getting to know the children; in Vanuatu they visited a remote island and contributed to the maintenance and teaching at a local primary school; in East Timor they filled in pot holes and worked in schools; in Darwin they got to know the local indigenous population and work to help out a local mission; and in Melbourne the group planned, shopped and cooked a meal for 60 homeless people. This and other amazing adventures widened the students' world view, helped them to see outside of themselves, and contributed to their understanding of what God might have them do to change the world for the better. At Plenty Valley Christian College we recognise that academic performance is a high priority, but so too is gaining an understanding of the world, and our part in it.
