Developing the Summer Game The three hardworking interns, Michael Columna, Darius Gracey, and William McGaughy, hired with money from a Young Adult Library Services Association Dollar General Summer Intern grant, developed the Summer Game this year. First we brainstormed ideas of the layout of the game; for example, we talked about the format and different prizes. We knew we wanted an online game. Because we didn’t have time or resources to program a game, we created a blog with a link to

the website the library uses to track summer game points. The blog allowed teens to log in and tell us what they did without having to be at the library. We decided what tasks teens could do to earn points and created a video that we embedded into the blog to show teens how to play. The blog also allowed us to link a calendar to the library’s website so teens could see full descriptions of programs they could attend to earn points. Throughout the summer, we monitored players’ points and added

bonus points when needed. We also used the blog to show pictures teens submitted for points and in-depth book reviews, a sample of both are included in this magazine. We also promoted the game at a 3-point shoot out at Parkridge Community Center this year. A total of 350 teens participated this year. Weekly prize drawings were held to motivate players to keep playing, and the final big prize, a Nexus 7 tablet, was won by Antione Jones! -William McGaughy

Son by Lois Lowry Claire has washed up from the sea; nobody knows where she came from. She came from a place where emotions and feelings do not exist and her assignment was to be a vessel for emotions or to have children to be chosen for selection. But she has feelings and misses her son who disappeared with a boy named Jonas. The book Son runs along with the book The Giver as a companion novel with overlapping characters. Claire goes through many sacrifices to find her son and rescue him. - Matthew Lee

Looking For Alaska by John Green This book blew my mind. It was as if a teenager had written the book. It captured what it is like to be innocent and then get introduced to everything else out there that people have kept secret from you, because they want you to be protected and shielded from anything and everything bad. It captured what it is like to lose someone close to you and the "labyrinth of life." One of my favorites! - Ani Freeborn

You Come Too by Robert Frost This book is a collection of poems by Robert Frost. He has come to be my favorite poet of all-time. The way he writes his poems is unique to him and I haven't seen any other poet write poetry like him. My favorite poem in the book is the classic "The Road Not Taken". This poem has a depth, saying that you don't always have to follow the norm and do what everyone else is doing. Sometimes it really is best to be your own person and do what you feel you want to do or whatever makes you happy, or simply what makes you, you. - Ani Freeborn

Zero Hour

A Door in the Hedge by Robin Mckinley This book is four short stories together. The first one is the lost princess and that is the story with the door in the hedge. The second one was "The princess and the frog," a pretty common story but with some differences. The third, The Hunting of the Hind. It was an interesting story of a prince and his sister as well as a beautiful woman placed under a curse with only her brother for company. The last one was the twelve dancing princesses. The last one was slightly different from the original version of the story, with dark escorts and dark lakes. All in all a wonderful book full of contrast. - Marita Nitkiewicz

Book Reviews (Continued) Hooked by Liz Fichera

The Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen

I made a blind date with a Girl/ Guy book Hooked. When I first took the book out of the bag, I was a bit skeptical of it because of the cover. However, the book proved me wrong. I found that I couldn't put it down. It literally kept me hooked. I found the story very interesting to read because I play golf and that is basically what the book was centered around. The main character is a girl who gets invited by the coach to be on an all boys varsity golf team. I liked in this story that the main girl, Fred, was down to earth and humble, showing that there are girls out there like that. Not all girls are spoiled and stuck up. There was a love story involved, but it built up over time and I found it very realistic. I thought it was a great book. – Ani Freeborn

Two boys named Ponyboy and Johnny run away because Johnny killed a soc in selfdefense thinking they were going to get in trouble for it. In the end they turn out fine, well at least Ponyboy. Will Johnny survive is the question in the middle of the book. -Helen Miklosovic

Music and Concert Reviews! During Warped Tour, 95 different band's played sets. To the well known Black Veil Brides, Bless the Fall, Sleeping with Sirens, and many more. There were also unknown bands such as Story of the Year, Set it Off and Action Item. Their slogan is 'Best Day Ever', and they did not disappoint. Not only did bands play, but

there were tents set up to sell band merchandise and food. You can meet people who love the same bands as you and it's just one big concert. It's really fun, and I suggest that if you like rock, metal, or 'screamo', then go to Warped Tour Next Year. - Brandy Mohacsi Night Vi-

Poetry by Minna Wybneche I don’t know how good I’ve got it I don’t know how good I’ve got it. Could you tell me? What I could do with a pocketful of memories? Who I am Why I’m here And why I have to leave when everything’s just turned golden.

Eagle I don’t know why I feel so lonely. Perhaps it’s the way your words look jagged and raw So honest and beautiful So different from before. You were so broken, like a little wounded bird. Now you’re a magnificent peacock With fabulous feathers glowing With extravagance. I wish the best for you I wish that your extravagance is built off of solid stone, Not on pillars of sand or shells of empty words. I wish that you stay beautiful And glow like the morning sun.

Marley and Me

It was such a good movie. I've watched it over and over. It's about a kid in high school that wants to be in the New York newspaper as a journalist. But his mom didn't want him leaving so she threw away his acceptance letter. He wasn't happy about it. - Miranda Watts

This was an excellent movie. It starts out with two people who are perfect for each other, and they fall in love and start a family. You see the progression of the family, starting with the addition of Marley (the dog) who became very important to this family. It is a tear-jerker; I will warn you. I would definitely recommend it, it's a must-see!

Paranormal Activity 4 I loved all of the other paranormal activity movies. I knew I would love this one. They all have a connection to each other, but they’re not in a specific order. The ending left me knowing there would be another! I can’t wait to see it!

Trouble Man by T.I. T.I. is one of my favorite artists. I loved every song on his new album. I listen to it all day on my iPad. My favorite song is Go Get It.

Fallen Demons by Brandy Mohacsi I look up at his fully extended wings. I tried to look up into his face, but the inkiness of darkness covered it. He took a step toward me. That’s when his eyes flashed at me. A shock went through me. I looked up into his eyes until he was a foot away from me. ‘Run.’ He says to me, without opening his mouth. His voice full of strain, like he was holding back on something, but musical at the same time. I don’t know how it was him, but I know it was. I also know that I wanted to get away from there as fast as I could. So, I spun around and was about to run, when he was already behind me. I whip my head around and he’s not behind me. I then feel his hands on my head as he roughly turns my head to look at him. ‘Are you scared?’ I look up at him, his mouth not moving once. He gives me enough room to either nod my head or shake my head. I shake it. Fear not once entering my mind. He looks me in the eyes and then says with his real voice, “You should be.” He then yanks my head back, exposing my neck. He was leaning down to my neck. I could feel his shallow breath on my neck and it made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. I could feel his lips getting closer and closer to my neck, more importantly the teeth behind the lips. I felt myself relax just as his teeth get close to my neck… -Beep- -Beep- -BeepI groan and hit my alarm clock

with more force than I should have. I open one eye just a little bit, and glare at it, daring it to go off again. When it doesn't, I hop out of my bed and turn to look for my glasses that I put on my night stand last night. They weren't there... Wait. I look around, and I could see all the corners in my room with the new morning light filtering through the nearly closed blinds. I walk over to my blinds and throw them back. The sun was wonderful on my skin, but it felt different today. Like, today was going to change. And, I plan to be behind the wheel. I close the blinds, I need to get changed and the last thing I need is a peeping tom looking through my window. I walk over to my closet and I know something is off. My closet has no clothing whatsoever in it. I look in every nook and cranny, but nothing. Nada. No clothing whatsoever. I walk over to my dresser and fling open the first drawer I could get my hands on and... nothing but air. I open the other five drawers, and still nothing. I run to my door and I fling it open. "Mom!" I scream at the top of my lungs, not worried about waking her, my father or little brother up, knowing they would already be up and getting ready. My mom comes out of their room, butting her blouse. "Yes, Sage?" She asks me calmly and a little worried. I never shout in the morning. My little brother actually became a victim to shouting

in this house, I cannot stand those perky, early people, so I usually end up punching the person that is loud. Well, he had to learn one way or another. "Where are my clothes?" I ask her, starting to get worried. I don't wear anything other than my clothing I pick out. I feel a little wind and pressure on my back, but nothing un-normal. The vent in my room makes it a little colder in my room in the mornings. "What do you mean?" She asks me, and starts to head toward me. The upstairs has five rooms. One consists of my little twerp, one is for our parents, one is mine, another one is a home-office and the last one is a guest room, like we ever have guests.

"There is nothing in my room." I say and turn to show her my closet, when I noticed something I haven't noticed before, it's full. How the...? "I mean, it was empty, but now it’s full..." "Are you sure you're okay to go to school? The medication wore off, right?" She asks me. I just had my braces removed yesterday and they had to give me some medications that caused hallucinations. Why, I will never know... "Yes, I'm sure. Even the dentist was okay with me going to school today." I remind her and shoo her out to get ready for school. Once the door was closed and locked, I look over at my night stand... still no glasses.

I walk over to my closet and none of my old clothing was there. All of this was brand new and it looked kinda scary... and, for some odd reason, I liked it. Huh. I pulled out what seems to be a 'Sleeping with Sirens' t-shirt, and instantly knew that they were a band. I pulled a pair of skinny jeans that had bobby pins in the knees with holes. Then, I pull out a pair of vans. I go to put on some makeup and noticed three things that should have scared me. One, my makeup was already done for me. The eye shadow was a light gray with black eyeliner. Secondly, my hair is cut, not short cut, but cut into multi-layers. Thirdly, my eyes aren't their natural brown color, but a mossy green. Huh… I ponder over this as I walk out of my room with my black bag full of school goodies on my back. I knew I shouldn't be proud, but when I went downstairs and when my mother looked at me, she gasped, dropped the pan of eggs she was cooking with out of her right hand and all over the floor. My father, who looked up to my mother’s gasp from the news paper, dropped his mug of freshly brewed coffee all over his white shirt (now stained brownish) and paper. My brother came screeching down the steps to the sound of dad screaming because he doesn't scream. Then, he falls on his butt and tries to say something, but couldn't. The only living thing that wasn't scared of my change, was Nyca, who just licked our now ruined breakfast. "Sage... what have you done...? How did you..." She says, and then shakes her

head as if this was a bad thought and it would go away if she shook her head hard enough. When she re-opened her eyes to me still standing there, she didn't know what to do. I sighed and looked for my skateboard. In the place of my skateboard were sparkly new keys that had my name on the key ring. I gasped. "You guys got me a car?" I ask and squeal. I grab the car keys and rushed over to my father and gave him a big hug, trying to not get coffee on my shirt. Then, I move over to my mother and give her a hug also. "Thank you." "Sheryl, I didn't know we got her a car..." My father says, getting the tone of we cannot afford another car when we are loaded. They just don’t want to spend it on their daughter. "Jack, this came for our daughter as a late birthday present. It does not have a return address." My mother says to my father, trying to calm him down. "Hey, little twerp. Wanna ride in my brand new car to school?" I ask, deciding to feel nice for once. My brother’s eyes start to shine and he nods his head, eagerly. "Oh, can I, mother and father?" He asks, with his over-sweeten voice that will get him anything. Little do they know it's an act and he is just like me. "Well, I don't see why not... But, you both have to eat first!" Our mother says to us, trying to be the good mommie she is. After we eat a granola bar, since our eggs were now going through my cat. We went outside to see what kind of car the mysterious person left me.

When I clicked the car remote, lights went off on a black bmw. I was shocked. Who would leave me a beautiful car? I unlocked the doors and look back to my brother. He was shocked to the spot on the sidewalk, like he couldn't move. I leaned in and put a little pressure on the horn and honked it. That snapped him right out of it. He ran to the door and threw it open. The windows were tinted so I didn't need glasses, but on my seat was a brand new pair with a note. 'I hope these work as good as your old glasses.' I turn it over, looking for a signature. Nothing. All it has are those ten words. I just started to get a headache from the blinding sun beating down upon me. I put them on and the headache started to subside. I threw my backpack in the back, put the keys in the ignition, put in in drive and pealed out of there like hell hounds were nipping at the back of my ankle. I reached the middle school I had to drop my brother off at in seconds. He opened the door reluctantly. We didn't talk on our way here. We both liked the silence. There was really nothing to talk about. Before he got out of the car, though, he turned to me.

"Can you pick me up from school?" He asks me, hopefully. I look at him with a scowl, and then seeing his face fall, I laughed. "Of course, you already know I would." I tell him, reach over and tousle his hair.

Shout It Out 2013 Brandy Mohacsi, a teen intern paid with a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs to learn to plan and produce a show, is ready to show the community what teens can do when they come together. "It's a place where you can express yourself in a musical performance," she said. "We're showing that the library can be loud. It's not just a quiet place, it can be a lot more than that." And, Mohacsi added, "It means we can show we're more than hooligans." from the Ypsi Courier article

This year, Shout It Out was one of the best ever, lots of great talents and even better production. Secrets Don’t Make Friends, a native Ypsi band, killed the crowd by having two moshpits. For the first time in Shout It Out’s three years, we had a mosh! There were many great performers, including a fantastic performance by RED, a self-taught rapper/ producer from, you guessed it—Ypsi, with Bebe Jones providing background vocals. We also had an appearance from FOW (Fraternity of Writers), a music oriented “family” based right here in Ypsi. Other highlights included These Boyz, a rap trio with original music, and Danyelle’s acoustic guitar playing, as a soloist and accompanying other singers. Many singers wanted to cover popular songs and local vocalist Susan Britton helped them prepare. The show opened with an original song with music and lyrics by Adom and Brandy, arranged over the summer with help from

Toko and Erik Santos of the Ypsi group October Babies. At the end of the show, rappers had the chance to freestyle over a live instrumental beat, composed with the help of Kurt Krahnke, and performed by Adom “Abyss” Small (TAG and FOW member) and Danyelle Pinder on guitars, D’Angelo Woods (TAG member), on keyboard, Deondrae Jones on drums, and Ross Johnson on bass. Shout It Out, again, passed all expectations! - Adom Small

Shout It Out has been going on for three years. I was there for the second and third year, but I think it was better the third year. The second year we had to have it inside because it was raining. I believe having it outside got more people to come. It felt like an open event, instead of a closed one. There was also

another music fest going on down the street, so it got more people to come and look at ours. Publicizing it was an extra bonus, because it got the word out for people to come and audition. As an intern paid by a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, I was one of the people who you had to audition to. We got to fit everyone into Shout It Out, so nobody was left out. Having people audition also let us have a feel for what they would be doing. We knew a little ahead of time what performers would do and got to mix the music genres around. - Brandy Mohacsi

Amigurumi Amigurumi Club is one of my favorite hobbies. Going to Amigurumi Club let me find other people who enjoyed it as well. They taught me new techniques that I still use to this day. I even discovered a website that sells plastic safety eyes through another patron in the Club. There are so many amazing things about Amigurumi Club, but the best one of all is that it has let me experience the simple bliss of

crocheting. Have a wonderful day and hopefully I will see some newcomers at our next meeting. Drop in to Whittaker to learn this fall: 11:30-1:00 pm 10/19, 11/2, 11/16, 12/14, 12/28 - DesaRay Maier
