The leaf follows a grandular pattern,which is made up of pentagon base units. disorder/anomalies within the “uniform� pattern is governed by the enviroment, thus creating a unique pattern.

I connected lines from the edge of each section to the center of each pentagon.(most of the segements were pentagons) I later decided to render the form in a more systematic manner by rearranging the units.

I then focused on the connections of the new lines.(a new design) I used colour and shades to bring out the 3-D aspect of the design

I took a 2 step approach in getting my design. Firstly I noticed that there were ”straight lines” passing through the smaller units of the leaf’s suface. I then trace it through. Resulting in the unique line patterning.Next I considered the pattern to be a 3-D object. And to accentuate the 3-D properties I created lines that was darker at the edge and thinner in the center. Finally I simplified the lines to a more crisp design that can be replicated.

I decided to replicate a natural phenomenon of looking through a droplet of water above the leaf. Forming a complex pattern where 2 functions interact with each other.

I connected the blocks with lines. I realised how within the segment the blocks would futher sub-divide themselves into groups. I took a closer look at the small units of each segment and noticed that the smaller units are interlocking.

The concentric circular lines represent the movement of the starfish. The linkages also represent the mental connectivity of the organism to its limbs.

This stage is the same as the previous example. I started out by linking the grooves of the tenticles. i drew lines between areas that are similar in features. I connected the points together for each seperate hand.

Stage 1: Extraction of Lines This stage is the same as the previous example. Stage 2: Using lines to represent the different tensions and relationships between objects For this stage I decided to look at the object by inverting the colours. Taking reference to the shadows created by the starfish. I took each space and created a simplification of the compounded form. I added lines to represent the shades of the shadow. The circular lines also creates a balance with the design filling up the void.

From the lecture I was exposed a myrid of softwares that can help us translate ideas and informantion into designs. From the course we will learn a variety of such softwares. The lecture explains how all things in nature follow a certain pattern that can be represented mathematically. The lecture brought forth 3 ideas of analytical drawings. 1. Symetry 2. Balance 3. Movement. We learnt how to analyse natural objects and extract the rules or recpie (ie fractals) to help us develop designs (Biomimicry). The second concept teaches us to think inside and out of the box. The 3rd concept teaches us how to represent movement as an abstraction method. From the readings by Poling, Clark on Analytical Drawings I learned a 3 steps method to analyse an object, which then enables me render designs. The 1st stage is a literal simplification of the physical object. We can use either primary or seconday sources. In this stage we pick out outlines the subject. The 2nd stage is picking out imaginary lines that represent connectivity between 2 objects. This step enables us to relate even the most unrelated things together. This stage challenges me to find links between objects/subjects and incite me to relate the imagary together. In this stage some features such as lines or corners or edges are exaggerated as seen in art movement, cubism. Colour maybe added to enhance the effects, bringing the drawing into a new dimention (3D). From the passage I understood that the last stage is the creation of movement and space. It enters a 3D space. It also breaks away from linear forms that governed the previous 2 stages. In the 2nd reading on tooling I learnt the magnificence of the natural creations, from the intricact formation of the snowflake to the everyday tree branches seen around us. This reading teaches me how to analyse nature, which compliments the 1st passage. With the skills learnt in the reading on analytical drawing. I will be able to conceptualize designs derived from nature. With the aid of the tutorial I understand the steps taken to develop a design. The first stage is to look at a natural pattern and decode it. After understanding it we can use the analytical drawing method and generate a few different ideas. We extroplate details of the source of inspiration (a natural pattern) and with that generate a new and unique design via the skills mentioned above.
