- Gobular structure faceted based on the pentagon base unit -Central globe has seperate opaque partitions which is on the internal surface of the lamp. -Handle is smoothen for ease of grip. -The shadows formed will have a central zone of complete shadow and the edges will be slightly blured. (Due to the diffraction of light)

Digitization of the model
I followed the digitizing method following the online tutorial. However I was unable to acheive the desired outcome. Hence I decided to use an alternatice method to create my 3-D model. I also attempted to pannel them as well.

Digitization of the model
I created a elipsoid and used cage edit to slowly model my basic shape/ This method allows me to get a more clean surface as compared to my previous method. Next after creating the basic shape to represent the rotation, I drew sections along the polysurface. I then edited the directions before lofting the secitions. Creating a sprial effect. I experimented many times before deriving with the desired form.

Both the original form superimposed upon the basic shape. I tried to boolien union the forms as this effect clearly shows the twisting effect but due to its complexity Rhino could not support the file Page 5

Panneling and the problems faced
I started with a 30 x 30 grid. I later changed it to form a 70x 44 to fit the grid of my pattern which has a 14x11 grid. The difference in grid points created different effects. I encountered problems with closing the lantern completely. I also encountered the problem of the panels being twisted. Which makes it undevelopable.

Panneling solutions The I managed to slimplify the number of coordintaes to prevent the software in crashing. I also created a new pattern which is in triangulating the base pattern. After many trials and errors I managed to get a panneled surface that is almost closed and have no twisted pannels. The paneling of the surface is later mitigated by editing the pattern grid which had a opening.

I then tried to use the 3-d modeling to create shapes and use a spiral as a curve attractor to show the progression of the changes in the object using the alternative method of custome 3-D variable. However I am not able to close the surface or pannel it to a surface. I used the alternative method to generate differnatial patterns with 4 modules created.

This 2 pictures shows the light effect when the spurce of light is emitting from the core of the structure In this iteration I used cut into each pannel with a changing cutting from a 0.8 maximium hole to a 0.2 minimum hole. The offset face border follows a curve attractor spiraling around the object to suggest the rotational movement in my recipe. The concept of my project is to create a light and show projection simulating a rift where it enable the lantern bearer to enter. the effect is where the central is brighter and periferal is darker this is in line with the original concept of which there is a difference with complexity and simplicity for the lamp design in module Hence providing a effect of entering into a new dimention.

Week’s reflection In the lecture I learnt gained a lot of insight on how ideas are generated. The lecturer Dr Alex Selenitsch showed us the 3 aspects of design with the analogy of the 3 jobs. First job is the scientist, which creates and analyses the pattern/design. Second the philiospher who formulate the concept. Third the artist which relates things that may not be logical scientfically. These processes echo the things we have learnt from week 1-3. It shows a step-by-step process of how to derive a design, where the first stage is the extraction of a subject foe design. Secondly, creating a set of rules such that one can generate more designs. Lastly relating and thinking out of the box. He also discusses the idea of materality where digitising can prevent the obscuring of the desired outcome which is also seen in the reading ‘Lost in Parrameter space?’. He then generalise design into 5 concepts. 1. Minimalistic 2.assemblage (collage/montage) 3.Amore ray (overlaying of layers) 4.The idea of a pun (having 2 unrealated objects held together by a pun) 5.Resolution that shows the joing of objects while maintaing the disitinct features of the different object. Next he elaborate on the idea of iterations generation which can be created with ease with the NURBS software now aiding designers in searching the desired design within the many permutaions of automatically generated design. Where he shows us his works, which really help the understanding of the application of design in the real world. Though the examples I saw how there are many different forms out of the different “concepts/approaches”.He finally disscussed the idea of using mixed media to do design. In the reading I learnt also learnt the uses of the NURBS software and how it has shaped mordern architecture. The software allows architects to create many iterations of a design. The 3-D plane of the software allows a better interpretaion of the desired design. With the software there is less loss of “data” from the conceptal idea to the built form, compared to the CAD system in 2-D. The software also allows a greater degree of accuracy. The reading also further elaborate on designing. The reading remphaises the design process, where the extroplation of line is used to generate a design. I also learnt how simplification is a method to make the design more sharp/clean. The idea of design as a problem’s solution, where there is a purpose allows me to see the practical side to design. I can concur with this, I feel strongly that design should be aesthically pleasant however not at the compromise of the user’s convenience.
