Happy Mothers Day

Some say that hardest job of a is being a mother. She carried s, she nursed s, she bathed s, and taught s. She stroked our hair when we were si, and talked s out  our sad times. She has always been there. She made you el like you belonge at times when there was no place for you in the world. She is so strong with a ever nding wi, that only translates to kindness. For these reasons and more, your mother deserves your appreciation a year round, and especiay on Mother’s Day. Think about your mother as you read through these quotes from people who love their Mothers The real religion of the world comes from women much more than from men - from mothers most of all, who carry the key of our souls in their bosoms. ~Oliver Wendell Holmes~

When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child. ~Sophia Loren~

If I was damned of body and soul, I know whose prayers would make me whole, Mother o' mine, O mother o'mine. ~Rudyard Kipling~

Youth fades; love droops; the leaves of friendship fall; A mother's secret hope outlives them all. ~Oliver Wendell Holmes~

A man's work is from sun to sun, but a mother's work is never done. ~Author Unknown~ A man loves his sweetheart the most, his wife the best, but his mother the longest. ~Irish Proverb~ 11

All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does. That's his. ~ Oscar Wilde ~

My mother is a poem I’ll never be able to write, though everything I write is a poem to my mother. ~ Sharon Doubiago~

The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother. ~ Theodore Hesburgh~

If I had a single flower for every time I think about you, I could walk forever in my garden. ~Attributed to Claudia Ghandi~

Mother's Day is coming soon. It is celebrated through out the world on different days as a way of recognizing everything our mothers have done for us, and their never ending role in our lives. This mother's day try to make your mother feel how much she is loved.

Happy Mothers Day!

What Should You Get Mom?

So its time for mothers day, time to show your appreciation to the one who gave you life, and made you who you are today. It’s hard to come up with the perfect gift for the most important woman in your life. Here are some ideas that would surely please your mother (don’t forget your mother-in-law).

If you are a dad, and want to help your young kids (3yrs- 10 yrs) This gift should be made. Crayons, paint, glue, glitter, macaroni, and more. Just let your kids get creative and design their own masterpiece for their mom. Don't worry about the mess, and let your children have fun! 40

Getting a little bit older (10yrs- 15yrs) So this group is still very young. No, you shouldn't go out and buy your mom diamonds! Instead try and buy her a card, but don't leave it empty or just sign your name. Sit down and think of a poem, or write things you appreciate about your mother. Cut out pieces of papers, and write down nice things like “back massage”, “10 kisses”, “wash the dishes”, “clean my room”, and give them to her as coupons, so she can exchange them for your work later on.

Old enough (16yrs- 30 yrs) Yes, you are old enough to buy her something she likes. Something small though because your probably not stacked with cash. A sweater, scarf, gloves, shoes, flowers, or chocolate will all be appreciated. Don't forget a card!

Show her you still care (30 and up) You are now in your prime, and most probably independent. Make sure you go the extra mile and buy her something really special to let her know you still care, and that she is still a large part of your life. The extra money from your career should help too. Think jewelry, a gold ring, some earrings, pearls, or a bracelet. Let it shine, and don't forget the card!

Remember, you have no idea what your mother has done for you. You can’t remember your diaper days. You don’t know how many times you woke her up in the middle of the night. You can’t remember the glitter in her eyes when you said your first words, or took your first steps. You are her, and she is in you. When you are giving a gift, the most important thing to include is your appreciation. If you can’t buy something, or are far away from your mother make sure she knows how much she means to you.

Fur is Dead

57

We have all seen them, those people. Walking down the streets with an air of confidence. Twirling on the television in their brand new jacket. The smiles on their faces, the happiness that boils over from their materialistic senseless joy. Famous people like Madonna, Kanye West, Jennifer Lopez, Paris Hilton and many more have no shame posing for the camera. But, what is it that we don't see? If we don't pay close attention to these celebrities we will miss something that should not be swept under any carpet. They wear fur. They wear animal skins. They were gloves, jackets, scarves, and vests of helpless creatures. At some point in our history our ancestors wore fur to keep warm in their unheated caves! They were the hides of a kill that also provided them with dinner. Things have changed however, and fur is dead. The need for it is dead, the value of it is dead, and the beauty of it is dead, though in the minds of the wise, it was never alive. Most people would agree that killing animals for fashion is on the cruel and unforgivable behavior list. However, I'm sure those same people would buy a jacket with something fur-lined, a simple trim on gloves perhaps. See no evil, has molded an ignorant race of humanity ready to forget their innate values for a piece of “fashion”. They don't know how it happens, they don't know how animals are treated, or mistreated, they have not seen the evil. Each year over forty million animals are slaughtered for their fur. Animals like the fox, the rabbit, mink, beavers, raccoons, and sometimes even dogs and cats are brutalized, and left naked to rot once they are robbed of “their treasures”. Animals are kept in horrible conditions with no room to turn, stuffed into death cellars laden with feces, and other dead animals of their own kind. They are then murdered by fur traders who don't want to ruin the fur. This means guns, and knives are out of the question. The hide or complete fur of the animal decreases in values with bullet holes, or slashes from a knife. Animals slaughtered for fur, are not killed by the moral code that Islam has declared for the killing of animals, or by any moral code for that matter. No sharp knife to the throat, instead stranglings, beatings, suffocation, poisoning, gassing, electrocution, and 58

Stomping. Many trappers won’t even spend the time to wait for their cash crop to die, instead the animals are skinned alive, and writhe with pain as their skin is ripped from their flesh. Forty million animals every year may suffer this fate. Around forty fox are needed to make one coat, one hundred mink to make one coat, fifty beavers to make one coat, one hundred rabbits to make one coat. Is one coat worth all the pain? Many animal rights groups protest against the violent way these animals are treated. They take a stand, and promote the value of life, and strive to promote the tastelessness of fur. Fashion is catching on, and while attempts of reconciliation with mother earth seem to be on the rise, few still seem to ‘hear no evil’. A challenge for those who still own fur coats, who want fur coats, or for those who still consider fur on the “hot” list. Search the Internet, or youtube, and type in ‘Chinese fur farms’, ‘how fur is made’, or go to PETA’s website who have uncountable, irrefutable documentation about how fur coats, scarves, or vests are made. Watch one video of an animal being skinned alive so it can keep you in style. Watch 20 seconds of it, and then decide whether fur coats should be considered as fashion. 59

A Brief History of Balian Ceramics in Jordan Exclusive hand painted tiles and ceramic since 1922 In 1918 three Armenian families were brought over( by the British Mandate Authorities) to Jerusalem, from Kutahya- Turkey, to renovate the ceramic tiles of the Dome Of The Rock of Jerusalem. One of those families were the Balian’s whereby in 1922, Neshan Balian Sr established the Palestinian Pottery of Jerusalem. The studio in Jerusalem, which exists to the present day, has had a rich heritage of ceramic art and has been responsible for introducing this unique form of hand painted ceramics to the region including Palestine and later Jordan and Lebanon. Clients at the studio ranged from the simple art connoisseurs to worldwide dignitaries and collectors. From the Kennedy’s of the US, to President J. Carter and Royal family members. Before the 1967 War which separated us from Jordan they included, Her Royal Highness Princess Dina Abdul-Hamid of Jordan and Her Royal Highness Princess Amira Basma of Jordan, both of whom were frequent visitors to the studio in Jerusalem.

A commemorative large plate (app 40cm diameter) of His Majesty King Hussein of Jordan hand painted by the Balian Family studio in 1953 on the occasion of enthronement of the King. The plate hangs to this day in the family museum in Jerusalem

Passage to Jordan and the Balian Studio of Amman. About ten years ago Balian Ceramics was invited by The Jordan River Foundation for a small exhibition of Jerusalem Ceramics under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan. Due to the fantastic reception of our art in Jordan, Balian Ceramics, taking advantage of the Jordan investment Program opened its new production studio in Amman in 2004. The studio has been a huge success and has introduced the art of hand painted ceramic tiles to Jordan where it is My late father Setrak N. Balian-left- receiving a commendation slowly becoming identified as a unique form from His Majesty King Hussein of Jordan for setting up the first industrial ceramics factory in Jordan in 1956 of Jordanian craft. Numerous projects completed in Jordan include the Zahran Palace, exclusive villas and hotels. The zenith of the Jordan studio has been the special tiles which the studio has produced to be placed all around Petra. These large tiles are unique where they provide information for tourists and are of extreme durability. Similar signs have been placed all around the renovated Citadel in The Jordan studio also exports to the Gulf countries where Palaces and Hotels have been adorned by the Balian Tiles of Jordan. References to our studio can be had from renowned Architects in Jordan such as Mr.Hisham Qadoumi, Mr.Jafar Toukan and Jardaneh Architects.

Origins and Styles of Balian ceramic art. The style and origins of Balian Ceramics are a mixture of Kutahya, Armenian and Islamic art . The animals such as the birds and gazelles are the Armenian influence. The symmetrical and geometrical patterns represent Islamic art. Our ceramic art is also highly influenced by the beautiful mosaics found throughout Jordan and Palestine. The combination of all of these has become to be known as Balian Ceramics with its roots in Jordan and Palestine. Our unique art has been displayed in various exclusive galleries and museums throughout the world. The top of our achievements being an exhibition of Balian Ceramics at The Smithsonian Museum of Washington DC in 1992. The latest exhibition- 2007- was in Valencia, Spain entitled “ Views of Paradise and sponsored by the biggest bank in Spain, Bancaja.

Neshan Balian Jr. briefing

Abdullah of Jordan( then Princess Rania) about the rich history of Balian Ceramics at one of the yearly Jordan River Foundation exhibitions.

The Persian Carpet Carpets today are valued for both their function and beauty. In the past carpets were spread

on the earthen floor of tents, rolled up, and straddled for a long trek which defined a nomadic life style. As technology progressed, the need for carpets slowly transformed to a want. Carpets would be recognized as an art among the ranks of statues, paintings, and pottery.

76

The oldest known carpet was discovered in Siberia dated to the 5th Century BC, by Russian archaeologists around fifty years ago. Though it be the oldest known, it is still not deemed as the origination point of carpets. It is still unknown from where carpets were invented. Instead it is assumed that they were created at different points through out the world at around the same time. With more research and understanding of the carpets of our past, it was concluded that at the center of it all was ancient Persia. Weaving out centuries of rare and beautiful artwork has made them world renowned. Cyrus the great of ancient Persia is credited with establishing the interest in the ancient art form. With the initial interest came integration from overtaking cultures such as the Mongols, and more importantly the Safavid rulers, which hold the most artistic styles. There are over a thousand Persian carpets preserved from the Safavid times. Rulers of the Safavid created workshops and trained craftsman to create their magnificent works of art, made of silk, and threads of all colors including silver and gold. Today, after many, many years Iran still stands at the center, as the most acclaimed producers of the finest carpets. It is the most accomplished craft of Iran, and everyone still accepts the unmatched reverence of the carpets as the best in the world. They are ordained with rich colors, and ancient patterns, and the mark of skill. Many collectors invest great amounts of money into Persian carpets. Deep in the underground areas of bazaars, there can be found old, and valuable carpets. Businessmen with a trained eye for marking the extraordinary artistry keep the old rugs as an investment, and won't sell. Many times, as with most items purchased on the notion of high quality, it is hard to tell the real thing from a fake. Many workshops, most often in Tabriz, Iran are the origination point of high quality carpets, and usually have a signature, and increase in value based on artist, design, material and knot count (the more knots the better). 77

Design is taken from the different eras from which the craft grew. For example, with the introduction of Islam, many carpets are weaved with extensive Islamic motifs. Each design has its own history, and many families in Iran (especially Tabriz and Isfahan) are recognized for specializing in a particular pattern or theme. The most expensive carpets are those made completely of silk. These carpets are not made for walking, and are usually hung on walls or framed. They are very rare because of the difficulty in using silk when weaving. Other less expensive carpets contain a mixture of silk and another material such as high quality wool. These carpets are both beautiful and durable, and can be placed through out the house; under furniture, or in low traffic areas. Persian rugs are also categorized by their “knots per inch or kpsi. Some high end carpets may have as much as 600 knots per square inch. If you are looking to purchase a Persian Carpet, take all the above mentioned into consideration. Decide whether whether you want to admire the rug hanging on your wall, or on your floor. Look at many different themes, choose your favorite. High end carpets are very durable, and may last for years. Silk carpets are masterpieces, and should be preserved as a painting. Whatever you decide, remember that the reputation of a Persian rug is not falsely given. If you spend time on choosing the right carpet, and paying attention to detail or make sure its authentic, you won't be disappointed. 78

Applications, and WiFi, don't even require a button any more, but simply the heat from your fingertips. While cellphone technology advances, automobile technology is not far behind, and companies have even begun to utilize WiFi and third-party applications. What currently exists in our vehicles are integrated navigation systems, new fuel gauges, USB ports, built in mp3 players, satellite radios, and much more. It's not just the high-end cars that are pushing out this technology, but many mid-range companies are standardizing a lot of the above features. Ford, stands out from the rest in coming up with a new system that enables WiFi, and allows consumers to integrate third-party applications. The system includes an 8-inch touchscreen reachable to passengers, with controls on the steering wheel for the driver as well. Another 4.2-inch screen is also included to toggle between fuel economy, and car status with controls for the driver on the left side of the steering wheel. The larger screen with control systems on the right, dictate climate, audio functions, navigation, and phone communication. This system will do away with knobs, and buttons all together. The system also includes voice communications to ensure eyes on the road, with over 10,000 voice commands. Now, the third touchscreen, also 8 inches in size, is the real innovation. Only accessible while the car is in park, the screen allows for interaction with Ford's new WiFi system. With a tabbed browser, a 3-D carousel for browsing bookmarks, an on-screen keyboard (also has a USB port which allows for keyboard connection), as well as text to voice readers. You can also install applications such a Pandora radio, and Open Beak which is a twitter client.

The third Party Applications will be sold and organized through ford. There is no WiFi system built into the car. Instead USB WiFi air cards similar to the one Zain Jordan offers will provide the service. So it seems that Internet speeds are increasing at home, and now will reach new levels of speed while cruising down a highway. By 2011 all Lincoln models will have this new system refereed to as “My Touch”. Ford and Mercury predict that within the next Five years, hopefully, eighty percent of their models will feature their high-end system, leading to yet another new turn in technology. Two questions come to mind in reaction to this new technology. First, is ford taking all the right safety precautions in integrating so much into their cars, which may deter from the car’s main task of driving? Second, when will it end? In the next five years which seems like virtually nothing in “technology years” ford claims to incorporate this new system into all their models. Out-dating last year’s technology, and this year’s technology, and lets face it, a car, especially a Lincoln is not like an out-dated mp3 player, or even phone for that matter. So, a word to the wise, while this new technology seems amazing, and could offer an unlimited amount of uses, and advantages don’t be suckered in just for the bells and whistles which may be out-date in a few months? Years? . Think about gas consumption,

and think about how you can be more green for the environment FIRST!

e bay Starts From Virtually Nothing

For about fifteen years now, eBay has been the leading on-line auction website. Marking the ranks as one of the top earning websites on the Internet. It has paved the way for on-line purchasing, and has given millions all over the world an opportunity to find exactly what they have been looking for “all these years. The story of eBay starts in a humble living room, in California, and works its way to international recognition. Pierre Omidyar first started his on-line auction web-site in an attempts to exchange on-line collectibles with other members in their virtual community in 1995, from his home living room. He wanted to name it echobay.com, but the name was taken, and so shortened to eBay.com. The very first item sold on eBay was a broken laser pointer for $14.83. Shocked about the purchase, Omidyar contacted the winning bidder to ask if he understood that the laser pointer was broken. In his responding email, the buyer explained: "I'm a collector of broken laser pointers." You can find virtually anything on eBay, 88

from clothes, to technology, collectibles, cars, tickets and much, much, much more! There have been few very interesting items for sale on E-bay. In 1999 someone placed a human kidney up for auction, and bids went up to 5 million dollars until the officials got involved and pulled the item off the listing. Another man tried to sell more than his kidney, and auctioned his soul for four hundred dollars. Someone else, auctioned off their forehead as advertisement space, willing to tattoo anything on their head. One man put his “life up for auction, this included his house, an introduction to his friends, and even a chance at his job. He sold his life for around 400, 000 dollars. One woman auctioned the right to name her unborn child. From cornflakes that look like Elvis, to collectibles like a single baseball card sold for 1.2 million, eBay has seen everything. Some people don't know the meaning of a malls anymore, and buy their clothes, shoes, socks, underwear, and much more from eBay. Everything should be shipped within a given time, and confidence between users are strictly overseen by eBay officials, who pride themselves on costumer satisfaction. Items are shipped from all over the world, and payed for most often with Paypal. Paypal is the preferred way of making payments for eBay auctions and is growing in popularity for other Internet uses. Paypal allows a person to send or receive money via an email address. Money in a Paypal account can be spent on the Internet, sent by check to the account owner, or deposited into a bank account. Paypal also offers credit cards, debit cards, and a bill paying functions. The future of eBay looks bright. In 2004 eBay had earned 3.3 billion dollars in revenue. Over 135 million people worldwide use eBay. The company hopes to further expand operations worldwide and possibly incorporate audio and video into the auction pages. This company takes pride in understanding what the customer wants to happen with their company. The "Voice of the Customer" was born in 1999. This venture brings up to a dozen loyal customers together with the company to discuss what is and what is not working on eBay. With this kind of interaction with customers and attention to detail, eBay should be around for a long time to come. 89

Nature's Pre-packaged Medicine

Bananas are a great source of well...a lot of things. They are sweet and delicious, already packaged in their own casing. Bananas are great treats that can improve our health in all sorts of ways. They can give us a boost of energy in the morning, prevent disease, lighten our dark mood, and even make us smarter? Well, lets not get too ahead of ourselves, although research is well on its way to proving all of the above true. Here are some great benefits of bananas! Energy Boost:

With as little as two bananas you can build up enough energy for a really tough 90 min workout.

Menstruation Moods:

The monthly visits from Aunt Flo can make us take a turn for the worse. By eating a banana which contains vitamin B6 you can regulate blood glucose levels and control your mood. 106

For the Sad Times:

If you are feeling down in the dumps, trying eating a banana. The yellow fruit contains tryptophan which is a protein that the body converts into serotonin which helps you relax and feel happy.

Blood Pressure Control:

High in potassium and low in salts make bananas th perfect fruit for those dealing with blood pressure issues. Research has proven that eating bananas help reduce the risk of blood pressure and strokes.

Make you smarter:

Research shows thats students who eat bananas as a snack before class are more alert for their studies.

Trouble in the Bathroom:

Bananas are high in fiber and can help alleviate constipation, without the use of chemical laxatives.

Mosquito bites:

The summer time brings fun, but not for free. Try rubbing the inside of a banana skin on your bites to reduce redness and itching.

Smoking &Tobacco Use:

Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Strokes: According to research in The New England Journal of Medicine, eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!

Warts: As far as natural remedies go, a cure for warts may be taping banana skin on top of your wart, yellow side out. Wow! The list goes on...de-stress for pregnant mothers, relief of heartburn, indigestion, ulcers and more. So is the banana better than the apple? Well if you want to keep the doctor away trying including both of these beneficial fruits in your diet. 107

Ask your pharmacist Q: How Can I Stop Smoking? Ph. A.: The first question to be asked is: Are you sure you want to quit smoking? Although there are lots of methods to help you, the major factors are your personal will, and understanding why you want to quit. As a matter of fact, when you light a cigarette, you inhale beside the nicotine and ta r, thousands of carcinogenic agents, needless to mention the damage you cause to your lungs, heart and most of your body vital organs. Q: I tried to quit but then went back after a month. What can I do Ph. A.: Studies show, that after six to twelve months of smoking cessation, 95-97% of quitters go back to smoking again, and you might be one of those Q: Do you have a solution? Ph. A.: There are lots of ways to help you quit. Starting from nicotine patches or nicotine gums, but my main concern with these methods is the fact that you might get addicted to these instead, and that will raise another problem for you.Other methods are, yoga, acupuncture etc‌ and those have not proven full efficiency but finally a solution was invented, which is a non nicotinic tablets whom address both nicotine withdrawal symptoms and reward which is crucial to overcoming smoking addiction. It is important to take a three-month course, after which you will be cigarette-addiction free. Q: How long will it take me to stop smoking after I start using these pills? Ph. A.: My advice that you should set a date after you start not maximum than 10 days to stop‌ and you will. Q.: Will there be any side effects? Ph. A.: The most noted ones are nausea, headache, insomnia and abnormal dreams. Q.: Is it necessary to finish the thee-month course? Ph. A.: Finishing the three months course will give you three times greater odds of quitting smoking. Finally, smoking cessation has two aspects, psychological and physical. You have to have state of mind and determination in order for this medication to help you physically. Maram AlHaj Ahmad, consultant pharmacist at Oxygen Pharmacy oxygenpharmacy@mail.com
