BOTANICO QUARTER PAGE

Following hot on the heels of one of Jávea's most beautiful fiestas, Moors and Christians, begins the two week fiesta honouring the “Mare de deu de Loreto” - “Virgin of Loreto” from the 26th August to the 8th September.

I

n Jávea, she is the patron saint of the port area and is regarded as a protector of its fortune, both on land and sea.

The fiesta programme, all set in and around the Port, includes, processions, fireworks, floats and the popular but controversial “bous al mar” - the “bulls to the sea” For the “bous al mar” a special arena is constructed at the harbour surrounded on three sides by a large temporary stand and on the fourth the sea which unlike normal bull-running events provides an additional means of escape from several tons of oncoming horns. The general idea being to try and encourage the bull to follow you into the water. They can swim - to a certain extent - and there is always a safety boat on hand which rushes to the animal's aid and ferries it back to land. However, the bulls are not the only attraction of the festival. In the main square, giant inflatables amuse the very young, whilst a foam party covers everyone in cooling suds. Elsewhere you'll find the meringue fight, a modest version of Buñol's 'Tomatina' with gooey meringue replacing the tomatoes. It's the ultimate feel-good experience! Throughout the two weeks, there are community dinners, live music and open-air discos, paella competitions and sports tournaments and of course a parade with colourful floats that wind their way through the streets of the town. Then there is the crazy "correfocs", well this must be seen to be believed. Literally meaning "fire running", the brave and fearless run through the streets of the port to the beating drums dodging fireworks. You can get as involved as you want, watching safely from afar or joining the throng of people dancing under the sparks.

6

THEYELLOWLEMONMAGAZINE

The 'correfocs' ends at the central promenade where the event finishes with yet more fireworks. A word of warning, dress down for the occasion, and a hat is a good idea. The final day of the fiesta starts quietly with a solemn mass inside the church but before long the noisy 'mascletà' begins, a firework display that is more about noise than pretty colours. The 'mascletà' grows in intensity and volume until you can feel the ground move ending in a deafening aerial bombardment. That same night there is the iconic aquatic firework display. Huge crowds will gather along the beaches from the port all way down towards the Arenal, many bringing chairs, tables and picnics to enjoy the whole evening. It has a huge reputation and people flock from all over to experience the display.

Dear Friends, It is a pleasure to address you from the pages of The Yellow Lemon. We are in the middle of summer and in Xàbia that means rest, leisure and great opportunities for our businesses. But it also means a great effort on the part of the Town Hall to maintain the best services and security, as well as to guarantee the good coexistence of all. o this end, we have reinforced the Local Police with 12 new officers for the summer campaign, who will be responsible for surveillance in areas with the highest tourist influx (beaches and coastline), as well as offering assistance and information to all the people who may need it. This is complemented by patrols that usually cover the entire municipality, as well as two boats and a watercraft with which we can quickly reach any point on the coast. On the other hand, the success of Xàbia as an international tourist destination is based on its fantastic natural resources. That is why, from the Town Hall, we are committed to environmental, economic and cultural sustainability as a key to maintaining our position in the market for many more years, without putting at risk what we have and what determines our quality of life. In this sense, from the month of July we have a free bus to go down to the Granadella Beach (there will be two buses, in times of greatest influx). In this way we relieve the Granadella of cars, we reduce the pollution, we increase the security and the quality of the experience of those who go to the beach. The result has been very positive so far: users find a beach reminiscent of the authentic Mediterranean, of one before the overcrowding. They can also enjoy the same as before the extraordinary services offered: the

T

three restaurants, and the rental of canoes and hammocks. In addition, to solve the problem of parking in the neighborhood of Duanes, in the port, we have enabled a free public parking area at the beginning of “Avenida de Lepanto”, at the entrance of the urbanization La Corona. It occupies a space of more than 5,000 m² and its situation makes it especially useful since it is less than two minutes from the heart of the neighborhood and the beach and also allows access to it without disturbing the normal traffic of the area. I invite you to enjoy the best summer in Xàbia.

.Taking you back to the early days you featured on the TV Talk Show” Miami Tonight” and performed with many famous artists. es, I worked in a band called the Gary King and the Dream band. We were the band for a TV show called “Miami Tonight—The Kendall Toyota Show” and we backed up all of the acts that were on the show, such as, Melba Moore, Tito Puente (who sadly passed away a few weeks later). Yes, it was great working with them and learning how professional they were. .What does your day generally look like? What do you like to do in your spare time? My day usually consists of me going to the piano trying to find a beautiful chord to inspire me to write another song or warming up my sax for my gig. In my spare time I must admit I love going to the casino, betting on my horse races and dog races and also going fishing. .Your third vocal album “Extrodinaire” had excellent reviews and stayed at number one in The Soul Charts for three weeks. What was it about this album that made it so special? I can’t say what the fans loved most about “Extraordinaire”, but I can say that half of the songs I wrote were about life experiences so maybe they could identify with them more. .You´ve recently had huge success in the UK singles charts with “The Whoopee Song” and “You´re Late Again Cinderella”.You´re very popular in the UK and Europe. What is it about this part of the world that the people love

This week i caught up the Writer, Producer, Sax Player and Singer Mr.Vincent Broomfield to talk about his life and his music. Vince released his album, “Extraordinaire” in late 2014, his third vocal R&B-Soul album, which reached #1 on the UK Soul Chart Top 30 in January of 2015 and stayed at #1 for three weeks!! Vince released a new single, “You’re Late Again Cinderella” in August, 2015. Vince’s single, “I Can’t Wait (The Whoopie Song)” was released in November 2015 and both songs hit The UK Soul Charts.

.You were born in Miami, Florida one of nine children ! You were fifteen when you got into the music business . Tell us how that came about? Yes I am the second youngest of nine children. I did my first gig with my family band at the young age of 15. My brother in law, Ted Williams, heard me practicing on sax and told everyone in the band that I would be their sax player! LOL!!

your work so much? I think that the people in the UK have just adopted me as their own because I have released all of my music there since 1987, so they are familiar with my sound and style. .You have worked with some very talented musicians but who is the one that really stands out and why? I would have to say Benny Mardones, because the guy was in his 60’s, still singing his hit, “Into the Night” like a young man plus he was very courteous and down to earth with us. He showed no ego at all. .What artist and music influenced you as you were growing up in Miami? My biggest influences on sax were without a doubt Grover Washington, Jr., and Wilton Felder of the Crusaders. As for vocals, my biggest influences were Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway. .What are your musical plans for the future? Just keep trying to create good music every day of my life, whether it sells or not. .Describe your self in three words? I am humble, dedicated and ambitious.

I am a big fan of Fawlty Towers, Some Mothers do Have Em, Benny Hill and many more British sitcoms. Comedians like Ronny Corbet, Ronny Barker, John Cleese, Rowan Atkinson, Jo Brand, Dawn French and many more have inspired me.

S

ome years ago I stumbled on an Irish comedian called Brendan O’Caroll and the award winning Mrs Browns Boys comedy show. This comedy show is a TV series, live show entertainment with the most outrageous, hilarious humour and wickedness and it has me in stitches every time. Normally with TV series, we as the audience, develop sympathy for one or two of the characters and although I absolutely love all and everyone on this show, I have however developed a liking for Dino Doyle, who is Mrs Browns gay son Rory’s boyfriend, played by non other than my very good friend Gary Hollywood. I caught Gary Hollywood for a chat in Lanzarote in between live shows of Mrs Browns Boys. . You were born and raised in Scotland in 1979 and your teachers sent you for an audition when you where 12 years of age. Did you have a desire at that time to become an actor? At the age of 12 I hadn’t really thought about my career, but if asked I would have said I would have liked to have been a traffic cop, typical boy thinking I would get to drive cars at high speed legally. . The audition you went for landed you the role as Simon Barrow in the TV crime series ‘Taggart’ starring Mark McManus. What was it like at the age of 12 to work alongside the great actors of the series? Having grown up watching ‘Taggart’ I couldn’t believe my luck, that I was getting to work alongside Mark who was an absolute gentleman and very down to earth, so much so, that after learning

You are also known from the TV series ‘Doctor Finlay’ and ‘Take the Highway’, but you have also acted in several films. Can you describe to us the difference between acting in an ongoing TV series and on a film set? And which type do you prefer? My time in soap land ‘High Road’ really is when my training started. Filming 3 episodes per week, in studio 3 days, on location 2 days and learning your new 3 scripts on day 6. One had to be very disciplined and focused, it felt like a conveyor belt in a factory. It was a great time and again working with such an established cast, the soap ran for 22 years, I was honoured to have 9 years of that and really did learn a lot. Compare this to films where you can simply do 3 scenes per day over so many weeks, and although there’s a lot of hanging around at times, it really is a slower pace and therefore I find it more enjoyable. . One of the films you worked on was ‘The Boyhood Of John Muir’ in 1998. How did you come about this role and what was it like to work on an American film? I couldn’t believe my luck landing the title role on ‘The Boyhood of John Muir’. Auditioning with more than 30 other teenage boys. I had never been abroad at this point and the excitement of going on a plane and spending 5 weeks filming in Boston, Massachusetts was any 16year old actors dream. Not being recognised as an adult in the states I had to have a chaperone and being able to take my mother with me and share the experience with her was an added bonus and memories that will never be forgotten. I didn’t tell her until we were 36,000 feet in the sky that we were going for 5 weeks and not 3 as I had previously told her, afraid that she would have changed her mind haha, after a small vodka and coke she soon settled !!! Filming was amazing and I learned all about John Muir, who shamefully before researching for the part I had never heard of this fellow Scot and of all the achievements he had made for the world of conservation including founding Yosemite National Park. . Actresses like Emma Thompson and other award winning cast are amongst some

3

4

5

you have been fortunate to work with and your roles have varied. What type of role do you prefer and is there a genre you would like to enrol in that you have not yet experienced? I really have been lucky in working with some of the industry’s greats. Alan Rickman casting me in his directorial debut ‘The Winter Guest’ a play written by Keira Knightly’s mother Sharman McDonald and starring alongside Emma Thompson and her real life mother Phyllida Law has to be one of the highlights of my career. I miss Alan very much he was one of the most giving, loyal friends that one could ask. During my career I have always played the parts of gentle souls I suppose looking to the future I would love to have a character that is perhaps troubled, laden with darkness, I suppose a bad one. . I for one, amongst many, just simply love you as Dino Doyle in the Bafta award winning comedy series ‘Mrs Browns Boys’. How and when did you land this hilarious role? Having done panto in Glasgow back in 2000/2001 I met the creator of ‘Mrs Browns Boys’ Brendan O’Carroll and his wife Jennifer and their family and team. He had said to me that there was a part that he had written and was I interested. I had spent at this point 12 weeks with the O’Carroll family and really connected with them, real, genuine, loving people that are very rare in this industry. So there was no doubt in my mind that I was not passing on this invitation. So our journey began and I have had Dino with me for 17 years now and love, love, love the character, the job, the cast (we are family really) as we have grown together enjoying the rewards and touring Arenas all over the UK and Ireland and Australia, New Zealand and Canada. . As Dino Doyle you play the gay son in law ish of Agnes Brown and you do it very well indeed, very convincing. What is it like to play a gay role even if in a comedy? Dino makes me laugh very much I based him on a couple of gay friends haha and I love playing him. Rory and I work very well together and having worked together over the years are now able to gauge and know where and what the other is thinking or doing, I suppose we have the choreography of them. . Will you continue as Dino Doyle for as long as the show goes on with ‘Mrs. Browns Boys’ and would you do any other acting jobs alongside the sitcom? I’m more than happy to continue with Dino for as long as Agnes and

6

7

Rory want me. There have been times in my life that doing this show and playing Dino has allowed me to escape day to day troubles, sadness and I don’t forget that. During our breaks we are able to do other projects should we wish, so I have the best of both worlds. . In your private life you live on the big rock of Lanzarote. What made you move there and can you tell us what it’s like to be a Scottish man and a celeb living on a Spanish island? I separated from my wife 4 years ago and found myself on holiday on Lanzarote and it was then that I thought I could see myself living here and so that was it, I decided there and then that my new chapter in life would begin in the Canary Islands and I adore living here with my new partner and friends and as much as a piece of my heart will always be in Glasgow the sunshine won me over haha. . Where do you, Gary Hollywood, see yourself in 10 years from now? Where do I see myself in 10 years time, I hope I’m still managing on getting away with this acting. I haven’t been caught out yet haha ! Have my children be happy and successful, my parents still with me and still being able to afford a cheeky gin and tonic ? . Hollywood is not a very common name and most people think of the film ‘Meka of Los Angeles’ when hearing that name. There is another celeb called Paul Hollywood, are the two of you in some way related? I don’t know if Paul Hollywood and I are related we could be. My dad is from a family of 18 haha and then there are their children and their children and so forth so who knows? I must do the family tree one of these days.

estaurante Les Bretonnes Beach

ow I know that I’m going to run out of superlatives to describe this amazing restaurant but here goes.

Les Bretonnes Beach has only recently moved from the centre of Moraira to its lovely new location overlooking the sea in Cala de l’Andragó and no detail has been overlooked from the tasteful and extremely comfortable outside terrace area to the spacious and luxurious indoor seating. But décor aside let’s talk about the food. The range of fish, especially lobsters and up to five different types of oysters

(depending on the season) including the famous Gillardeau number 1 is astonishing. If you’re not familiar with oysters they do a selection of each for you to try. They’re are all kept in 13 tanks in the restaurant to ensure maximum freshness. In fact everything and I mean everything is fresh in this gorgeous restaurant from the Cod, the selection of wild fish to the potted Shrimps, Whelks, Sole, Scallops and much, much more.

Les Bretonnes Beach has firmly established

itself as the number one fish restaurant in the local area. But apart from being a wonderful place for fish aficionados there is a wide selection of delicious Steak from Spain and France, salads, rice dishes, hot and cold starters and of course some lovely desserts including 13 flavours of handmade ice cream.

The lovely manager Lydia speaks French and Spanish and along with her knowledgeable English speaking staff will happily show you around and help you with your choice. For those wine connoisseurs out there I must say the wide range of quality wines, mostly French with a few Spanish, covers every conceivable taste. When you visit you are in for a treat, their passion for quality wine shows, with over 80 different wines in stock, indeed they serve 15 different wines by the glass! Les Bretonnes Beach also has the added bonus of being able to offer the facility to buy and take away all their products, including their large array of cheeses (chosen at the beginning of a meal so they can be served at their optimum temperature) patés, terrines, handmade butter, other specialties, wines (over 3,000 bottles kept in stock) plus of course their lobsters and oysters.

Prep time: 30 min. Total time: 1 hour, 30 min. You need 6 ramekins or other moulds large pan (used as a water bath) Ingredients 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar 6 eggs 1 14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk 2 13 ounce cans evaporated milk 1 teaspoon vanilla and a little pinch of salt As a Queen B Twist 1 tablespoon Whiskey per portion 1 tablespoon Nutella per portion Preheat oven to 325F or 160C Caramelized Sugar Topping: Pour 1 cup of sugar into a pan and heat on medium until the sugar begins to caramelize. Once the sugar has turned medium brown, remove it from heat. Add approx. 2 tablespoons of the caramelized sugar into each ramekin/

moulds. Rotate each ramekin / mould to ensure that sugar covers the entire bottom. In a bowl, combine the eggs, whisking until they are combined (like egg nogg). Add the two types of milk, mixing until completely combined. Add in the rest of the sugar, vanilla and salt. Blend until the mixture is smooth and fluffy. Add the custard into the ramekins/moulds on top of the caramelized sugar. Add about 1inch of hot water into a baking pan. Gently place the ramekins in the pan. The water should reach at least half the height of the ramekins; if needed, gently pour in more water. Place the dish in the oven, do not splash any water into the ramekins/ moulds. Bake for 45 minutes or until a knife inserted to the side of the centre of the flan comes out clean. When taken out of oven you can either put straight in the fridge or like me add 1 tablespoon of Nutella at the bottom of a glass or portion dishes and gently pour the Flan from the ramkin/mould into the glass with the caramelized sugar on top and pour over 1 tablespoon of Whiskey and leave to set in fridge for at least 1 hour or until serving.

SGT. PEPPER’S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND.

THE BEATLES.

W

elcome back & let’s press straight on with this month’s topic.

By the end of 1966 The Beatles had put live performances & touring behind them and were now only interested in making “adult” music for their immense army of worshippers. They had the success of 1966’s Revolver behind them and were straining at the leash to produce an even more groundbreaking album. It was indeed to come but already the Fab Four had lost what made them so special which was their teamwork (& even the guidance of George Martin was waning) & from here on in their output was the work of 3 brilliant individuals plus an excellent drummer in Ringo Starr. By December 1966 the germ of an idea for a rocker called “Sgt Peppers” was already in Paul’s mind and the song was quickly finished. Out of it grew the notion that The Beatles would literally disappear from view to be replaced by their alter egos in the form of The Lonely Hearts Club Band. Thus the finished masterpiece has come to be viewed as the first “concept” album. The Beatles’ fans were certainly hungry for more innovations after Revolver & ,after 5 whole months of solid work at Abbey Road, their idols delivered a quite extraordinary “funtasia” which hit the streets at the end of May 1967. For a second time The Beatles were to make history & change the course of popular music & the so-called Summer Of Love had already found its main soundtrack. From Paul’s rocking opener through to the masterwork of “A Day In The Life” which concludes the whole shebang (again it seems to last much longer than it’s actual running time of just under 40minutes) every track can be considered a gem to which it was hard to find anything similar that had come before. There is much psychedelia of course but precious little opportunity for George Harrison to shine on lead guitar with a whole gamut of orchestral instruments finding a place somewhere in the tracks. George did ,of course, provide an Indian style track to kick off Side Two with himself playing a pretty authentic sitar! With the help again of Geoff Emerick all kinds of recording innovations appeared for the first time on Sgt. Peppers and a new invention also showed up in the form of the Mellotron. Each track told its own story and the cynics

were quick to point out the influence of drugs in their composition , a fact that was acknowledged in the fullness of time. Even Ringo’s relatively lightweight track was to become a pop classic but ,sadly, two tracks that were intended for inclusion (John’s Strawberry Fields Forever & Paul’s Penny Lane) were sacrificed early on when EMI demanded a new single & B side early in 1967. In fact they were issued as a Double A (which peaked at No.2!) and policy of the time dictated that they would be excluded from the album. No matter there were plenty of goodies left to rave about & the LP was presented in the famous “gatefold” sleeve with award winning artwork by Peter Blake. Once released Sgt. Peppers proved impossible to ignore when popularised in the final flourish of Pirate Radio. The ever cautious BBC meanwhile banned some of the tracks!

Although there were a few dissenting voices saying The Beatles had lost their way the vast majority of record buyers & critics rose as one man to sing ecstatic praise for the album. It sold by the truck load on both sides of the pond, musical awards were heaped on it & most of the tracks were covered and released as singles by all kinds of singers and bands. To this very day Sgt. Peppers is up there vying for the title of the greatest album ever released. In real terms it signalled the beginning of the end for the band and ,with John shortly to meet and become besotted with Yoko Ono, Paul McCartney was to emerge the leader of an increasingly troubled & unravelling group. Their next output, The Magical Mystery Tour” saw critics & public turn on the group for the first time. The higher they come............ I hardly need an excuse to feature The Beatles on my radio show but , & I can scarcely believe it myself, Sgt. Peppers turned 50 years old this summer so the whole album gets an airing over 2 Sundays in August. Please make a date and be sure to join me for these , and why not all, editions of Ready Steady Sunday on Sunday afternoons on Bay Radio. ntil next month I close with my best wishes & my perennial exhortation that we must ,now & forever, KEEP ROCKING!!!

REVIEW

L

OW festival 28th – 30th July

To continue Spains summer festival season we at The Yellow Lemon headed just down the road to Low Festival in Benidorm to experience the advantages of a smaller but well organised music festival without the discomfort of an overcrowded, queue dominated and toilet trauma experience that may be the bug bear of some of the larger festivals of its kind. Since 2009, many artists have played at Low Festivals great venue. Bands and DJs from the national and International scene make up the 3 day programme that bring this lower cost, lower stress and high vibe festival to life. Big names from previous years include Portishead, Massive Attack, The Libertines, Foals, Kaiser Chiefs and Kasabian

By Suzanne Millington

This years headliners included Franz Ferdinand, Pixies and The Hives as well as Casa Azul straight down from Benicassim. Low Festival is located in the ciudad deportiva Guillermo Amor in Benidorm, with more than 30,000 m2 of lawn, together with two swimming pools (one of them is olympic-sized!), two VIP areas, green relaxation areas, incredible gastronomy and many more facilities that make it one of the best festival venues in Spain! This, together with the fact that Benidorm is increasingly being seen as the Spanish capital of so-called kitsch

glamour, is one of the main reasons why more than 80 artists and 25.000 “lowers” per year choose Low Festival as their go to summer festival. Although the Low festival line up cannot compete with the huge appeal of FIB or Primavera for us international music lovers, it still holds an attractive variety of national bands and enough headliners to warrant the low cost daily ticket price and close proximity for a fantastic summer experience. What impresses me most about this festival is the thought has gone into the award winning sustainability and diversity of the “lowers” needs. The stages are all in close proximity without any overlap of sound but the venue is spacious enough to give the comfort of relaxation time on the endless green areas. Measures are taken throughout to reduce the impact on the environment
