T

raditionally these midsummer celebrations have been around for thousands of years but for Javea the modern celebrations of San Juan stretch back to 1950.

San Juan

a t s e i F S

o what happens during the two weeks of festivities starting, this year, on the 10th June. It is definitely the best fiesta of the year. So here is an abbreviated explanation of what it involves so that you can enjoy the celebrations. Taking centre stage every year are the “Quinta” a group of youngsters celebrating their coming of age during the year. The traditions of the quinta date back to the 19th century when young boys were eligible for national service, and so began the excuse to have a party the night before they left their villages. Here in Javea the town hall sends out invites to young people registered on the padron who will be turning 18 the following year inviting them to form the next years quinta. Not everyone accepts because it’s an expensive obligation – for the girls, the dress alone can cost up to 2,000 euros, but a fair

6

THEYELLOWLEMONMAGAZINE

proportion of those invited find the money to become part of the year’s special group, a real honour to represent the town as the quintà. And it’s not just the native Xabieros who are invited; in recent years, foreign residents have taken part including British and Dutch youngsters. Whilst the quinta is the central figure of San Juan the “Penyas” are the heart and soul. These are friends who have formed themselves into groups with the primary aim of enjoying the fiestas. Being part of a penya is an honour and without the hard work from them and the quintas the fiesta simply wouldn’t survive. The programme is long and varied, from street parties, parades, bull running, paellas, late night live bands, DJ’s, fancy dress competitions and much much more. For the full fiesta programme go to www. javeamigos.com.

However, there are two days, the last two days, that no one should miss. On the 23rd June is the legendary “nit dels focs”, meaning the magical night of fires which interestingly has been given the honour of being “Fiesta de interes turistico local de la Communidad Valencia” which basically means it’s amazing. Close to midnight, the partying starts (so a siesta in the the afternoon is advised so that you can keep going) with the traditional fire jumping in the streets. Everyone takes part from the very young to the very old. A large crowd begins to gather at Portal del Clot in the old town. Most will be wearing floral crowns home made from piles of the plants placed around the town earlier in the evening just for everyone to use.

E

xplosions in the night sky herald start of the party accompanied by the standard beat of drums and the pleasant sound of the ‘dolzaina’. A huge crowd will gather, people jostling to see as the first pile of wood and pine branches is lit. It’s traditional that the Fogueres Queen makes the first jump, usually accompanied by either the president of the Fogueres Comission or the town councillor responsible for Fiestas, quite often the mayor too. The pushing and shoving continues as people line themselves up to take a jump. The most brave jump first through the flames, sometimes reaching two or three metres high. Then, eyes and mouth closed, they leap as high and as fast as they can through the flames, accompanied by cheers from those waiting to jump themselves or from those content to watch from the sidelines. Most people hang about and wait until the flames die down to make their jump. Sometimes the crowd is so big that you really don’t have any option but to wait, inching yourself along the road to get yourself into the right position to jump. It’s not a night for agoraphobics. inally the parade of people end up in a small square at the bottom of town where a huge bonfire will be built, and the atmosphere is electric as more and more people gather. Music may

already be playing over large speakers placed on the roofs of the surrounding buildings, pumping out the ‘Fogueres’ song as the Quintà joins hands and begins to dance around the huge fire. Firemen spray down the surrounding buildings and open areas. The powerful hoses provide brief showers of cooling water; it may be well past 1am but it’s hot around the fire. The ground beneath your feet becomes a wide but shallow river so don’t wear your best shoes or those beach shoes that fall apart at the very hint of rain. he night is still not over because then comes the “correfoc” you may have thought that the fire jumping was dangerous but this is the health and safety experts nightmare, with the brave and the fearless running through the streets of the old town dodging fireworks. For those not quite so brave the procession, along with the sound of beating drums ends up on the Plaza Constitucion, where you can watch from a safe distance. The final day, the actual holiday of San Juan, ends this amazing fiesta with a fun packed day. Early afternoon there is the Mascaleta which is something to behold, actually there is not too much

T

to see but the noise these fireworks make is incredible. There are parades in abundance including a float parade with bands in the early evening. t midnight there is a fabulous 20 minute firework display set to music....wows the crowd without fail every year. The very last act is to burn the “fogueres” a three story statue that was built during the fiesta. The atmosphere is added too with some light hearted, but very noisy, chanting from the next years “quintas” advising the old group that their year will be so much better.....! Don’t stand too close unless you mind getting wet, a cooling off from the firemen attending the event often happens. Live music and discos follow till 5 or 6 in the morning.

Dear Friends, To be well informed is a basic condition for becoming more critical and freer citizens and, thus, contributing to the improvement of the community in which we live. The birth of a fresh channel of communication is news that should please us all. From today Xàbia has a new voice and I want to congratulate my friend Adam King and all the people that are making it possible. As mayor of Xàbia, I hope your future will be long and filled with success. That will be the best indication that our town is dynamic, diverse and enriches itself through debate.

T

his medium adds to the list of headlines that, thanks to their work, their rigour and their commitment to the truth, allow citizens to have ample access to what is happening in their immediate surroundings and enables them to make more informed decisions in their day to day life. It is also the responsibility of the local Administration to favour this process and commit to a transparency that facilitates the task of providing information. This is how I understand it and is how I have acted from the beginning. Thanks to the generous invitation of Yellow Lemon, and beginning with this issue I will have the honour to address you each month to discuss the news from Xàbia. I will personally explain what we are doing in the Town Hall, the development of the topics of greatest interest, our future projects, and any other relevant aspects of local news.

plans for entrepreneurs, fiestas, and a cultural and sports programme, etc.

B

ut later we will have time to talk about all this. In this first column I just wanted to express my delight at the birth of Yellow Lemon and to publicly wish it lots of luck. At the same time I also send affectionate greetings to all your readers. See you next month!

We are at the half-way point of the current legislature and we have a further two years that are going to be truly exciting. In the coming months, we will take definitive steps to provide our town with emblematic infrastructures such as the Auditorium and the municipal swimming pool. We will continue working to improve all urban areas and urbanisations with our plan for asphalting streets and replacing street lighting. We will work on the urban renewal of the neighbourhoods so that they are in the best condition for those who live here all year round and for those who visit us, and we will continue with fire prevention, THEYELLOWLEMONMAGAZINE

usic is what we love ! I certainly love it. It´s been a huge part of my life. My mother was an Operatic Singer, my Grandfather played the accordion and I was brought up in a household full of music.Radio One , which is todays Radio Two [ If you know what I mean ] was always on. There was no internet then ! Man , I’m old ! But listening to music whilst I played with my toys in the home influenced me right up to this day. Playing Subbuteo to the sounds of The Kinks and The Rolling Stones was just fabulous. Im sure I scored more goals on The Subbuteo table when “19th Nervous Breakdown“ was played !

a record.I never said because I knew I might get some “ stick”. You see, they all wanted to buy The Merseybeats and The Stones, which I liked, but The Four Tops were something else ! My turn came and when I asked for the vinyl they started their taunts..” what the ....is that The Four Tops ? “ “ Who the ...are they ? “ “ They are amazing ! “ “ Cant be ,we’ve never heard of them !” “ Well I like them and Im buying it !”

That day shaped my musical direction.

I remember rushing out to buy Al Greens album “ Im still in love with you “ and getting a similar response ! But I was hooked on Soul Music and my taste for Soul grew as I grew. It´s lead me to where I am today presenting The Soul Show on i2 Global Radio. Over the coming weeks and months I will be talking about the wonderful things that are happening around the world in the current soul scene. I will be interviewing artists from back in the day that I was influenced by and talking to new artists who are making an impact around the planet in the world of Soul music. I am looking forward to being involved in this exciting new project with The Yellow Lemon and I hope you will enjoy my exclusive new column. Oh, and don’t forget to listen to The Soul Show on i2 Global Radio... Coming soon !

“ Bueno, me gustan y lo estoy “ comprando!

I remember going to the Comprehensive School and travelling on the bus.The driver, for some reason, turned the volume up on this one track and this wonderful voice boomed from the speaker above my head ...”Bernadette!” I had never heard anything like it ! Tony Blackburn announced at the end of the track that it was a band called The Four Tops. I couldn’t get the song out of my head. I went home after school. The radio was on, obviously, and the song came on again. Man, it was amazing ! I cheekily asked my mother for an advance on my pocket money. She asked why ? I said I would like to get this song tomorrow in Derricks Records. “ Ok “, no problem ! “

If you would like to get in touch I would love to hear from you The following day lunchtime arrived and gwsoulman@yahoo.co.uk me and my mates ran out of the school Facebook garry williams gates and walked the fifteen minutes to Twitter @garrywilliams17 the record store. They were served first . They didn’t know that i was going to buy

ederica and Matt are the perfect couple to open an Italian Café in Jávea, With many years of experience running just the same in the UK, they decided to up sticks and bring their great ideas here. When you visit Caffè Milano, situated at the end of the newly refurbished canal in Jávea’s Arenal area, you will meet Federica, the Italian half of the duo, a ‘signora’ who is very passionate about the food they provide to their customers, and not forgetting Matt, the British half, who’s attitude to customer service and enthusiasm for their venture is very refreshing.

B

eing a family concern their service is very personal, you just know in the short while that they’ve been open they’ll already know all their customers names and what their regular orders are. Being a “Café” doesn’t begin to describe the wide variety of products they provide at all. Joining Federica and Matt you will find Italian Barista, Francesca preparing with love and latte art the authentic Italian coffee, which is of course to die for, and so many variations, way too many to list, available in three sizes. Recommendations include

the many different Italian breads and amazing fillings from a Bruschetta with cured beef, mushrooms and shavings of grana padano to sweet tastes of Torta della Nonna or the Cannolo Siciliano, yum. If you prefer to take away your order, that’s no problem. If you’re planning a picnic by the boats on the nearby canal or taking a stroll down to the Arenal Beach, give them a call and they’ll sort it all out for you, why settle for cheese and ham sandwiches when you could be feasting on a toasted Ciabatta Messina with Grilled and Marinated Vegetables and Sun dried

Tomatoes. Don’t forget when you get thirsty in the hot Spanish sun that they provide that very popular Italian beer Peroni on tap and lots of other speciality drinks to go with your food. We can’t recommend this lovely little café enough for choice and quality in all areas. Check out their facebook page “Caffè Milano Jávea” and find them at the end of the Nou Fontana Canal by the boat slipway on Avenida Del Pla. Give them a call on 965 64 11 48 Enjoy. Out of every touring and studio band, there is a hidden gem amongst the musicians, that for me working in the music and film industry sticks out, because of the talent they have been blessed with. This story starts March 1964 in a town called Dewsbury just outside Bradford in “sunny” UK. A gifted boy was born with a talent for music and the guitar, that would prove to become his life and a great joy for his fans.

SMOKIE’s GUITARIST MICK McConnell GOES SOLO

S

omewhere, somehow during the 1970’s I became touched and aware of the British POP-ROCK-COUNTRY band SMOKIE. I followed them through up’s and downs, through great Music, through tragedy of losing their lead singer Alan Barton in a tour bus accident in Germany 1995, the changes of musicians and in concerts too. Then in 1996 in a concert in Aalborg, Denmark, we the Fans were all introduced to the newest addition to the band, Mick McConnell who had joined SMOKIE as the new guitarist standing in for Alan Silson who at the time was ill. This is when I first came across Mick’s talent and have since had a great ear and eye for the musician and we have over the years developed both a friendship and professional relationship. I caught up with Mick McConnell at his home in Murcia Spain shortly after he

released his second solo album UNDER MY SKIN 2017. Mick, You have been a professional Musician since the age of 22 and grew up with the beginning of pop. What inspired you to become musician? ctually, I turned professional when I was 19. I was a normal kid, into football and music, but a TV show on BBC in England, called TOP OF THE POPS would have had big influence on my musical tastes and perhaps to get famous. Prior to joining Smokie, whom you first met whilst you where touring with another band in Germany, you had been touring for several years, constantly on the road. Could you describe to us the pros and cons of being a professional musician? he Cons of becoming a musician; I had a good job and studied at college, it made my mum very sad to see her son leaving home. She sadly died whilst I was on tour in 1984. I was going into the unknown and would have to learn to live without having a steady income. The pros; I followed my dream, I believed in myself, it worked wonders for my confidence and self-esteem. Looking back, I never thought it would give

do you have tours planned playing your own material? “UNDER MY SKIN” is a no messing Blues/ Rock album, that I feel most comfortable playing and singing. I genuinely feel I wrote some great songs and my guitar work is my best yet. “UNDER MY SKIN” peaked at number 13 in the IBBA Blues chart, but I’ve had some great reviews, not just in the UK but in Europe and the USA too. The amount of radio airplay is reflected in the chart position. My new manager Golly Gallagher has really pushed my profile and for the first-time magazines are interested in me as a guitarist and THAT for me is a huge deal. There is a few dates already confirmed for January 2018 to go play these songs live, I shall look forward to that! What kind of guitar do you prefer playing and do you play any other instruments? play the guitar that suits the track that I am playing, but I would be better known as a “Gibson Les Paul” man. I played tenor saxophone for some years, I have just had it serviced, so maybe I will get back to blowing a few notes.. What is your next project? plan to write some songs that will suit SMOKIE, we have had some discussions about recording again. I also have a piece of music to write for an independent documentary about bikers who love their bikes more than their families… They want a rock/blues theme, so hopefully that will progress quite soon. You have been a part of SMOKIE as successful Cover Albums a few years ago. mentioned since 1996, do you ever get tired of being on the road and what I don’t like doing covers at all. Smokie inspires you to continue, and how long has enough great songs of their own! I needed to record my own songs because will you be a part of SMOKIE? sadly Smokie just stopped recording, 1 years is a long time to be in the although that may change very soon same band, but I still enjoy what I hopefully. It was never an ego thing do. I like the band members that I have though, but I did need to have a reason worked with for so long and to certain to feel my worth as a musician, because degree they are like family. As we all get isn’t that the reason we got into the older, I think our time on the road will be music business in the first place? governed most likely by our healt. ( Mick I for one, was so pleased when you is the youngest of all the band members released your first solo album called “MY of SMOKIE ) It is my wish that we carry on, KINDA HEAVEN” Tell us, how did you feel only if we can do what we do… well! standing on your own two feet, as it were? As mention you were born in Dewsbury “MY KINDA HEAVEN” was a mixture of and to me you have always come across songs I’d written over the years and it as an arch Brit, but you also live in Spain. was suggested that I record these songs by Warner Chappell with whom I’d just signed a publishing deal. At the time, I had not yearned to become a solo artist. It did receive a good amount of critical acclaim even though sales were generally slow. Two songs from that album stuck out though, and that would show me exactly where I needed to be if I ever did another solo album. “UNDER MY SKIN” your latest solo album, was released on March 26th 2017 and are steady and quite successfully climbing the charts. Where and how did this album come about and if you were to compare both experience and meaning of this album contra your first one back in 2011, what would you then tell us and me the life I have enjoyed so much and the rewards of having some success. Before talking about your solo projects, could you please tell us, what kind of music does the private Mick McConnell enjoy when at home? like to listen to chill out music and acoustic guitar music whilst sitting round my swimming pool here in Spain. When I’m back in the UK I tend to listen to “Talk Shows” on the radio. Working and touring with Smokie who has a repertoire with both own material and cover songs, has that in some way inspired you towards your solo debuts or what did inspire you? s most people know Smokie have a huge repertoire and we had two very

P

ETER SKELLERN.

Hello and welcome again to a tribute to an extraordinarily talented man who sadly recently joined the ranks of our fallen heroes in the upper chamber Peter Skellern. I always held a sneaking regard for Peter and for at least two reasons. The first was that , like me , he often swam against the flow. The second was that, unlike me, he did so very successfully. Hailing from Bury in Lancashire, born on the 14th March 1947 another shared trait we are both Pisceans, Peter showed prodigious talent from an early age on the piano and in his teens played in local pop groups. That perhaps was predictable but he also proved to have creative talents too so was dispatched in his teens to study music at a far higher level at the famous Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. It was there that young Peter began to mix the influences of rock and roll with a deep love and appreciation of the classics. If those two elements were not already enough to stir a young and creative mind there was one more influence to stimulate Peter that came from far closer to home. From his earliest years Peter would have listened to the brass bands emanating from the local coal mines and factories and it is clear that he grew to love the sounds they created which is ironically something we did not share! Indeed a great deal of the music Peter later created would feature, whenever possible and applicable, either a full brass band or elements of the sound of one. One thing is for sure Peter Skellern NEVER forgot his Lancastrian roots. As he moved into his twenties it was clear to all around him that Peter would find commercial success and it was indeed to come in 1972 but, typically, with an extraordinary and groundbreaking song. Suddenly Radio 2 (NOT One!) Djs like Terry Wogan were airing Peter’s song “You’re A Lady” and it rocketed up the charts to peak at No.3 and even made the US Top 50.

very long (but have a listen to 1975’s brilliant “Hold On To Love” which made the top 20) but he delivered high quality music of all kinds for the rest of his life. Quite apart from his own compositions in orchestral and choral music (finding regular applications in television and film) Peter would regularly record and perform revamps of old classics from the 30s and 40s wallowing in another trait I share with him. Nostalgia. Full choirs and brass bands would regularly feature in Peter’s outstanding arrangements augmenting his almost spoken vocals. Two later ventures merit special note. Firstly the formation in the mid 1980s of “Oasis” a meeting of the talents of Skellern, Mary Hopkin , Julian Lloyd Webber & other talents to deliver sadly just the one brilliant album. The other was to go on literally a world wide tour for many years with fellow purveyor of wit and wisdom Richard Stilgoe and perform evenings of song & comedy monologues. From this era came the amusing “Joyce The Librarian” and many other comedy gems

Sadly Peter Skellern was not to make old bones. Still composing quality music to the last, Peter succumbed to a brain tumour in February this year at just 69 years old. He left a wife, children and grandchildren and very touchingly, 6 months before he died and knowing his time was short, Peter achieved a long held ambition when he was ordained as a minister in The Church of England. So we lost a quirky ,yes, but highly gifted You’re A Lady was hardly a pop song, musician & tunesmith. More from me behind Peter’s plaintiff and almost here next month until when I urge you all whispered vocal was his own piano augmented by a brass band and a church to KEEP ROCKING!!! choir! Would it surprise you to read that the young Peter played the organ in his local church?! A love song for sure but one that threw out the foundations of how a pop love song should sound. It also ran for a good 4 minutes by the end of which it had become a mini suite. So at last the world sat up and took notice of a 25 year old who had become a most unlikely of pop stars. Peter did not stay a pop star

REVIEW i By Suzanne Millington

f you’re a festival lover but don’t fancy wading through the mud at a UK event, then, instead of packing your wellingtons and plastic macs, think about packing sun screen and shorts and heading for the Costa de Azahar. Perched on Spain's east coast, north of Valencia, the world-famous FIB (Festival Internacional de Benicàssim) is one of the most popular festivals on the calendar each summer. Thousands of music fans flock to the beach destination for 4 days of sea, sun and sound. Renowned for its eclectic lineups, this year’s festival is packed full of some of the headline names in indie rock, pop and electronic music as well as musicians on the cusp of international stardom. Some of musics greats have appeared at FIB over the years. Artists as iconic as Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, Leonard Cohen, Iggy Pop, The Cure, Stone Roses, Oasis, Blur, Lou Reed and many, many more have played here. 2017's edition welcomes Red Hot Chili Peppers for their first headline appearance. The relatively new Club Stage showcases the cream of the crop in upcoming Spanish music as well as other indie bands. There are more than 100 separate acts highlighted every year, performing on four separate stages. The small area of the festival arena also allows you to get from stage to stage without any hassle, ensuring that you don’t miss any acts and experience the full festival to the maximum. And when the live music stops, the world class DJs keep the vibe pumping until the early hours. So what are our top tips to enjoy the festival to the max…? The campsite is open for a whopping 8 days allowing festival goers or FIBERS time to get a tan before the opening act! And a festival in the sunshine sounds like a great idea right? Camping without the mud may seem a huge attraction but the July temperatures can bring their own drawbacks. If you are enjoying the festival to its fullest then you might not get back to your tent until the early hours of the morning! So

the resurgence of the elusive ‘80’s

ith the resurgence of the elusive ‘80’s dance sound’ establishing from such bands as Loose Ends, SOS, Luther and more, it has by far, enabled the current dance ‘remixer/producer’ to indulge, reminisce in a little bit of the ‘old skool’ and for anyone over the age of 30 it’s a chance to recollect about the old days when we seemed so much ‘musically happier’ and sort of lived a little more care free and anyone under the age of 30, a chance to embrace what could be potentially classed as a new era in soul & dance music scene, but as always with resurgence and new music only time will tell. One of the biggest difficulties with remixing and producing those new or existing tunes with an old skool sound, is to ensure that the quality is not ripped away and that you still manage to keep the identity of what could be perceived as once a great tune back in the day! Anyway I digress, The Basement is about bringing some of the latest soulful and remixed tunes that are ‘out there’ and to share with you some of the news that is happening as we head off towards a long hot summer, unless your based in the UK, then its rain again! Lol

and Steven, melodic and comfortable to the ear, but still offers the recognisable key points of such a superb anthem. The new version features the vocal talents of Ms KJ Sutherland, an industry veteran who has worked and performed with top entertainers such as Alexander O’Neal, Lemar, Heatwave, Leee John/Imagination and many others.

Odyssey Celebrate 40 Years

produced also a new version of their classic dance/soul/funk anthem ‘Inside Out’, featuring Ms Romina Johnson performing the lead With the vocal. Ms Johnson had a hit in resurgence her own right back in the 90s as co-writer and lead vocalist of the on The Artful Dodger’s track elusive Movin Too Fast. This tune has a very different approach to ‘80’s the original and I like what has dance been done. Like many of the bands from sound’ the bygone years of soul & disco, it could have been so

Let’s get back to the days of flared trousers, zipping up your disco boots, big hair and the Lopez Sisters!

i

f you know your disco then you would know that I am referring to 1970’s New York based disco group Odyssey, who bought us those absolute anthems Native New Yorker, Use It Up & Wear It Out and many more floor fillers, I am happy to announce that the music has been kept alive by Steve Collazo (son and nephew of Lillian and Louise Lopez, who founded the group way back then) and is celebrating Odyssey’s 40th Anniversary with not one but two remixed releases! Native New Yorker quickly became a worldwide hit in 1977, and now forward wind to 2017 the tune has had a ‘disco dust down’ and been given a modern day approach, the new version has been produced by Andy Williams (Yamwho?)

26

THEYELLOWLEMONMAGAZINE

If one remix is not enough, the band then offer us more of the good disco stuff, as the duo Yamwho and Collazo have also

different for Odyssey and the legacy that the Lopez sisters created, the music could have fallen into the back of any disco aficionados collection sitting neatly in a box titled ‘old records’ in the loft to be forgotten about, but Steve and the members of the new Odyssey era have managed to ensure us that his mother and her sister continue to live on through the hits that made the band a worldwide disco phenomenon, proven my offering us their upcoming EP (presently titled “The Journey Continues”), Steven Collazo will feature on a soulfully-housed version of Odyssey’s UK number one hit Use It Up And Wear It Out which he produced again with Yamwho and will be released on ISM records in June 2017.

As I remember the days of standing in the middle of the early 80’s nightclubs and the DJ hit the play button to ‘Native New Yorker’ and watching the dance floor clubbers erupt with applause and singing, I am excited for the new era of disco albeit nu disco and as we see artist and groups from the bygone days of disco slowly disappearing , it is very comforting to know that 40 years later we still can, in our own simple older ways, embrace what Odyssey did for us in the disco era and what they are doing for the new generation. Now let me zip up my boots and strut my stuff!
