Site Analysis 1 - About the construction and image in Donshih town/ 東勢的涵構意象 東勢鎮從外部空間分析與內部空間分析來看是由各種元素 以環繞包圍的組成方式而構成的城鎮,從地理環進來看, 它被山與河道所環繞,對外形成一道天然的屏障;客家人 以廟宇為中心呈放射狀發展,以及為了防禦原住民入侵而 彎延的本街將彼此聯繫起來;隨著經濟發展使得原本繁榮 的本街逐漸轉往豐勢路,基地成為了介於兩者之間的角色; 住商混和的建築型態包圍著基地四周,使基地的行為 24 小時不斷進行,基地四周活動的豐富性造就了歷史文化的 價值,然而卻沒有一個將彼此聯繫起來的元素,反而給予 觀察者一個封閉的意象。

SITE
From outside analysis to Donshih and inside analysis in Donshih, we can find that this town is surrounded by various elements. From geographical environment, it is surrounded by mountains and river and form a nature barrier. Hakka set temples as centers and radial development. The bending Ben St., forming in order to prevent aborigines’ invasion, connect each other. Once-strong Ben St. going down and be replaced by Fengshi Rd along with economic development make the site to be the role between Ben St. and Fengshi Rd. The building type of mixed residential and commercial surrounds the site and the activities carry on constantly whole day. The diversity of activities around site create the values of history and culture, however, there is no element connect each other instead giving a closed image to observers.

ADVANTAGE OF VIEW hospital farmers’ association
- The image in site and relation to Donshih /
More close obser vation from site, we can find that the potential position of site is an intermediar y among relations but there is a barrier obstructs these relations which is caused by its walls. Although the connection between site and roads only Ben St. and 2nd Side St., it seems like a closed place but actually to be a main feature. The image in this site responds to the image of Donshih, this place was surrounded by residential and traditional industries, also the end of shopping in Ben St. market. There are only two side direct contact with outside, but just for this reason that meet at one point bringing out the cohesions of flow of people and flow of traffic.

As its landform and environment, which is surrounded by mountains, separated from river, and there is only a bridge to connect to outside, The naturally developed city image hides natural resources and historical humanism. To release from the closed image and make rich resources be seen, however, these values go to silence for the reason of image and residents want to protect their precious property.
T h e re a re l o t s of c u l t u r a l parks and alley to let people understand the histor y in this town but they can’t have more deep experience because the lack of touch, to add more touch to arrive the comprehensive of sense and have more deep learning.
Not just fast food restaurants r i s e n , u n d e r t h e t r e n d of development and progress, people ask for speed of diets g r a d u a l l y b u t i g n o re ” t h e essence of eating.” We should preserve the characteristic of slowness because the pace of town is different from city.

T h e re s u lt of a ppe a ra n c e in D o n s h ih n o w is accumulated continuously by its history. Hakka from Guangdong China has cultivated in Taiwan from the early years of Qing Dynasty and developing around their religions; the government in Japanese colonial period built the local symbol of prosperous forestry. These extensive history and culture, however, surviving among lanes as results of its geographical environment and town space. The fragmented relations closed the space on the contrary, and causing the fate of constantly aging.
ADJUSTED IMAGE- CONNECTION
Donshih town, surrounding by nature, lacks of open space to be the intermediary between person and person, people and space. Which important is that space preserve the values of culture, but the closed town image and blurry space systems increase the barrier. The location of site exactly to be the role of connection and turn into part of the streets making people feel not only in site but in town space and experience the values of local culture.
PROGRAM
The closed image of site reflects on the situation of Dongshih. At the same time of space activation, reserving the original image and mixes into the new image.
The feature about arrangements of dorms reflects the space structure of Dongshih which are the visual changes between cracks and open space from outside to inside.
Arrange the spaces and circulations to create a friendly open space and achieve the effective interactions among locals, outsiders and town.

The common questions in Donshih are closed image and space defined ambiguously. There are barriers caused between outsiders and locals, they can’t truly understand Donshih’s essence. However, how to understand about the constructions of a city for an outsider or a town is not only stays in its space but also contacts with locals who connecting to environments closely. Actually, the bidirectional must be existed between outsiders and locals when there are two kinds of users at the same time. Locals are the part of space essence, they create space constructions and surrounded by image; outsiders need to understand its constructions by the clearly defined systems.

From the space constructions in Dongshih, the developing type in this town is religions as the points of center developing outward and connecting these points are streets, lanes, mountains, and river as the lines. The development of building are start from three main volumes then connected by its minor spaces and aisles, and open spaces are formed by surrounds. The most important is that open spaces are not only created on ground floor but created on vertical and connected by circulations to achieve bidirectional on space from town to building.
