Provincial Camps: A Yer Scene Premier
from Yer Scene Vol. 8

Provincial Camps have clawed themselves a position as a Saint John staple through shows in seemingly every venue and playing with any genre of band. Mere months after releasing their first work, “Exaggerator”, the band is readying to drop “Fuzz Pop.” Fuzz Pop releases in late June but fortunately, I was able to hear some of the new material. The fuzzy and memorable song writing of Ty Segall, better known as Weezer, radiates in the song “Temple in the Sky.” With choruses that linger, lead guitar lines that continually add more to the song whilst never overstepping and lyrics that emit honest angst.

The band have been working to find a production that brings out the big sounds of gear like the Big Muff while honoring the time put into vocal harmonies and lyric placement. Despite the melancholic atmosphere, the band has found an almost rejuviant energy, one that makes you want to try again- at whatever is momentarily beating you. The combined vocal efforts of Sam Roach and Sheehan Flatt carry the song and gives it the impact it needs. Everything that goes into this song feels intentional and sure, even if what motivated the writing of it isn’t. Provincial Camps new album is filled with the anthems that makes you put down a drink in a shitty bar you don’t even like and leave determined to tackle the close-to-the-soul problems that are following you. Provincial Camps are at their most vulnerable whilst being steadfast in their resiliency. The album is sure to be not only one of my favourites coming out of Saint John, but of the year.
