grandson is an alternative artist hailing from Toronto, Canada. His edgy sounds and almost-spoken-word vocals give light to politically and socially fuelled lyrics. His music is empowering and gritty, enough to make you want to riot in the streets singing along.

Here is a blurb from his website, www.grandsonmusic.com, which sums up his work pretty well:
“Searching for his voice and for meaning in today’s divisive, chaotic world, Grandson confronts the most pressing issues of his generation through his songwriting, such as financial inequality, governmental and environmental accountability, and social justice, giving these topics a soundtrack with a genuine sense of urgency and frustration. The music also touches on adolescence, relationships, and the insecurities and difficulties of growing up through your 20s. When asked about today’s music scene, he says “I genuinely believe the world needs honest rock and roll, now more than ever”.”
His debut single “Bills” is a great tune for broke college kids looking to spew out their rage against the system. With true to life lyrics like “and on the day that I lie still, well, I’ll still have taxes, and I’ll still have bills” grandson seamlessly pairs electric guitar and hip-hop beats to create a unique and catchy track.
His second single “Bury Me Face Down” has a atmospheric, rock vibe but still includes his unique beats and lyrics. This song has some really cool jazz guitar and layered vocals.
“Kiss Bang” and “Best Friends” are two of my favourite releases by grandson. They mix heavy guitars, reminiscent of 90’s rock, and modern hip-hop influences to create truly unique tracks. Not to mention the album artwork on both singles is incredible.
“War” is my 2017 anthem. It describes perfectly how the political climate is feeling post-2016 election. And again, the album artwork is iconic.
“Blood//Water” feels like it has more of a hip-hop influence, but when the chorus hits the grungy rock influence shows. The lyrics evoke frustration and chaos, but in a good way.
“Overdose” is more mellow than previous releases. It gives me early 2000’s hip-hop vibes, while still incorporating a rock element.
grandson’s latest release “Thoughts & Prayers” is possibly one of my favourite songs EVER. This song debuted following the shooting at Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. With lyrics like “no thoughts and no prayers can bring back what’s no longer there” this song has become my new anthem. With conversations happening across the world about violence and gun laws, this song evokes true emotions about the current state of America and the Western world. Not only does this song address important topics in current affairs, but it’s catchy and well produced. The choir at the beginning gives me chills, and the ring-around-the-rosy inspired bridge is so good. And yet again, the album artwork is incredible.
grandson continues to amaze me with his thought provoking lyrics and his unique blend of rock and hip-hop. Musically and lyrically, grandson is completely unique and I cannot wait to see what he comes up with next.
