Welcome to our favorite issue of the year, THE TRIAD’S BEST! As many of you may know, this is our biggest and most read issue all year and something we spend several months working on. This year’s voting was incredible and we saw many repeat winners and Triad favorites claim wins and runner-up honors. There were also a lot of newcomers to jump out ahead.

THE TRIAD’S BEST BAKERY - FOR GOODNESS CAKE BY KATIE MURAWSKI

The Triad has spoken, and the Best Bakery award goes to For Goodness Cake. Taylor Inman, 28, is the owner, baker, and decorator of the bakery that is ran from her home in Randleman, North Carolina. Inman said she also gets help from her husband, Matt, the assistant baker and delivery driver, who also helps set up for weddings. “He’s also the encouragement and motivation during design fails lol,” Inman wrote in an email. “We are so honored to have been named Triad’s Best just within our first two years in business, and we can’t wait to see what cake idea challenges our customers have for us in the future.” Inman said the bakery “just kind of happened” and originally started out as a dog treat company. “A lot of people really wanted dog cakeslike birthday cakes,” she said. “So then it just kind of swapped over to people cakes.” The name “For Goodness Cake” comes from Inman’s desire for a business with a “punny” name. Inman said her menu ranges from macarons, cookies and cake pops to, of course, cakes for all occasions. Inman said she also still takes orders for dog birthday cakes. Inman’s family is from Louisiana, and she said there is a “huge culinary scene” throughout the state. When she was passed down her grandmother’s cookbooks, she knew she was destined for the culinary field. “My grandparents bought me a chef

jacket when I graduated high school,” she said. Inman enrolled in the culinary program at Guilford Technical Community College. She said that even though GTCC packed “a lot in a small amount of time,” she did not finish the program. Inman said GTCC’s program was “more restaurant-based,” which she was not interested in getting in to. Inman said after, she hopped on Youtube, bought some box cake mix and went for it. Now, Inman has developed all scratch-made recipes from cakes to making pure vanilla. “My favorite part of the job is to decorate,” Inman said. “If I could hire a baker, I would totally do that.” Inman said her favorite challenge is to bake macarons because they are “really tricky.” She said the more “unique, or overthe-top” orders, the better because she enjoys the challenge. Inman said prices depend on custom orders and she has baked items for sale as low as $2. There is a $50 base cost for custom orders and the prices go up “depending on how crazy of a design they want.” She said typically, the cost per serving is $3 to $5. For more information, visit For Goodness Cake’s website www.forgoodnesscakenc. com/ or email info@forgoodnesscakenc. com. To schedule a console, Inman said to email, Facebook message her or call her at (336) 685-1476. !

The Triad’s Best Chefs

Y Kristi Maier @triadfoodies

Contributor

ES! Weekly readers have spoken and it was such fun being the messenger by telling our winning chefs that they’d made the top of the heap! We reached out to get their reaction and also help you get to know these chefs a little better and find out what makes them…. eh…cook!

Best Chef in Forsyth County Winner: Curtis Hackaday, 1703 Restaurant and Catering Chef Curtis, chef de cuisine at 1702, is arguably one of the most creative, thinkout-side of the box chefs in the entire Triad. We like to say he’s globally enthusiastic with a local twist. You’d have to see his social media for the enticing photos

that draw people to 1703. This culinary adventurer is a staunch supporter of local farms and is also a licensed mushroom forager and gardener. Hackaday, whose inspiration for cooking was “ignited” in his Grandma Goldie’s and Aunt Mag’s kitchens, is basically self-taught and enjoys working foods in new and different ways. “I’m not big on rules,” he said. Craving corn smut? Beef heart? Hackaday’s got you. His menu, which is always changing, features beautiful creations with handmade sausages, squid ink, octopus, frog legs, and for the less adventurous, a plethora of steaks, pork, and chicken that are just as stunningly appointed as the exotics. Try his menu on a Tapas Tuesday night to see some real flair. Runner-Up: Tim Grandinetti, Spring House Restaurant, Kitchen & Bar Chef Tim is in the throes of a cookbook tour of sorts and loving every minute of it. Last fall, this popular chef launched his cookbook, “Soulful Harvest” which

is part memoir, part recipe book full of seasonal dishes from the restaurant and his famiglia. Grandinetti’s name at or near the top of the Triad’s Best list isn’t uncommon but he says being in the company of these top chefs never gets old. “It’s such exciting news,” Grandinetti said. “I’m incredibly grateful. I’m not as famous, and nowhere near as cool, as my cooking might suggest... I’m just a small town kid from Hudson, New York, living, laughing and loving life.” Runner-Up: Travis Myers, Willow’s Bistro The chef that sprang new life into Willow’s is still enjoying being one of the pre-eminent young superstar chefs in the state. If there’s anyone, anywhere (other than myself) that likes to talk about dishes, share photos of dishes, it’s Myers. Willow’s Bistro not only got the chef of its dreams, but also the social media chatterbox of its dreams too. You don’t have to wonder what’s on the menu there. Chef Travis is happy to share what’s going on #SOB40 (South of Business 40). Now enjoying two-plus years at Willow’s, Myers says the love is still strong. “It’s not just the kitchen that makes us great,” he said. “It’s all about the culture we have developed here at Willow’s. I’m proud of the entire staff who has helped up get here.” Best Chef in Guilford County Winner: Chris Blackburn, Scrambled Southern Diner/ Lindley Park Filling Station A first-time winner, Chef Chris was a bit surprised and “hugely grateful” when learning readers had selected him as Best Chef in Guilford County, especially since he closed his fine dining Josephine’s in Greensboro in lieu of opening a breakfast and lunch eatery in its place. But it’s not just any breakfast place. On a typical weekend, Scrambled might have an hour to 90-minute wait, but most people find the scrambles full of local farm goodness and ginormous pancakes are truly worth it. He and his wife, Sarah, also own Lindley Park Filling Station, which is still going like gangbusters. The chef has been enjoying married life and his daughter Lila, who’s now 2 years old. Lately, Blackburn gets his fine dining fix through Josephine’s Catering. “We play around at Scrambled but it’s a well-oiled machine,” he said. “And then I get to be really creative with the plated dinners we do with Josephine’s Catering.” Unlike some chefs, Chris and Sarah also

Curtis Hackaday own the property their businesses are on and that means taking care of everything from refrigerators to roofs to weeds. “Food and cooking is one aspect of restaurants,” Blackburn said, “but sometimes I’m not cooking in the kitchen because I have to do some maintenance. The days are getting longer and more hours are worked, but it’s a good problem to have.” Runner-Up: James Patterson, Sedgefield Country Club Chef James has been grabbing some well-deserved attention lately by winning the local competition dining series followed by accolades all around. A jaw-dropping chef’s table was an added benefit to some of us. Why? Because a country club chef isn’t exactly “open to the public.” So if you’ve tasted his food at a special event or fundraiser or been lucky enough to eat at SCC, then you know what all the hype is about. He said it is an honor even to have been nominated and included with the likes of Blackburn. “I never thought my name would be recognized in the area as a top chef. I know that being a country club chef, I have a very narrow window for entertaining the folks of Greensboro and our surrounding communities,” Patterson said. “To finish as runner-up is mind-blowing. The other chefs on the ballot are truly some amazing people to know and to work within the Triad Community. Chris Blackburn, Kris Fuller, Jay Pierce, among others are the folks that I tend to think of when it comes to the ‘Who’s Who’ of Guilford County. I appreciate the support from those that voted for me and what we do here at Sedgefield Country Club.” Patterson has received the honor of being selected as Featured Chef at the Triad Local First Community Table in the fall. He’s already got a line-up of superstar chefs, like those mentioned previously, for the event. Community Table will be taking place on Sunday, Sept. 30 at Double Oaks

chef in the 30 and under category, you could’ve knocked him over with his tongs. “This award means the world to me,” he said. “It fuels my young career even more, and I am very grateful for the support of the community. This is my first ever award for being a chef and I can’t wait to accomplish more of my career dreams and goals.” Chef John was also a featured chef at our local Chef’s Table. He served breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert in one meal and he killed it. As chef at Sophie’s

Cork and Ale, he’s given a wide range of creativity to play with the menu as well as create incredible burgers and salads. Sophie’s also has an ever-evolving menu with a new one coming out in early June. And by popular demand and lots of urging from Wilson, Sophie’s now offers brunch every last Sunday of the month. he failed yet fabled Land of Oz will throw open its emerald gates in June, offering a rare opportunity to relive a uniquely 1970s experience where folks Billy Ingram can once again skip merrily down the YelContributing low Brick Road with sweet Dorothy Gale. columnist Land of Oz was a Beech Mountain summer attraction developed in 1970 by Grover Robbins, whose nearby Tweetsie Railroad is still going strong. An immediate hit, 4,000 eager tourists were on hand as Debbie Reynolds, accompanied by daughter Carrie Fisher, cut the opening day ribbon. The Land of Oz adventure began with a cyclonic recreation in a tidy clapboard farmhouse with Dorothy and her hand puppet, Toto. When park goers exited, the dwelling appeared shattered against the naturally formed rocks and pines with two legs in striped stockings protruding from the foundation. On their whimsical trek down a winding Yellow Brick Road, Dorothy and her companions encounter a warren of grotesque faces carved into native trees towering above knee-high, psychedelically painted mushrooms. Colorful abodes dot the way forward, each inhabited by the familiar 1939 MGM movie characters performing pre-recorded song and dance numbers. A tin structure jutting from the mountainous terrain, Scarecrow’s summer home nestled in a wooded glen, the Cowardly Lion’s cave

leading to the druid castle of the Wicked Witch of the West. Then onward to the Emerald City for a stage show capped off with a rendition of “Over the Rainbow.” Gondolas rigged to resemble hot air balloons delivered patrons back to the base of the mountain where, on display in the museum, was one of Judy Garland’s actual costumes from The Wizard of Oz. In 1975, that iconic gingham dress was stolen during a fire and vandalism that laid waste to the park’s infrastructure, leaving the public with an impression that the attraction would be closed for good. Prior to the grand reopening of The Land of Oz in May of 1977, my 19-yearold-self was hired to embark on a novel tour where I would portray the Scarecrow and put on a puppet show in shopping mall courtyards located anywhere within a three-hour radius of the park. Only two actors were needed to set up and go, so I enlisted a classmate from Catawba College, Cyndi Rorie, for the role of Dorothy. In that signature flouncy pinafore, ruby slippers and ponytailed black wig, a more quintessential Dorothy there will never be. Children’s eyes were bedazzled at the sight of her. The musical program, puppets, and set were created by Jerry Halliday who went

A young 19-year-old Billy Ingram as the Scarecrow on to Las Vegas fame with a, “Wickedly Inappropriate Adult Puppet Show.” For rehearsals, they booked Cyndi, myself and Jerry into a grand hotel where we were the only guests. State law was if a hotel was open, their restaurant had to be as well. So a retinue arrived every morning just to serve the three of us for the few days we were there. Kids adored the show Halliday choreographed and composed. Dorothy and I would begin with dialogue in front of what resembled an enormous toy chest that served as the staging area for Wizard versus Witch puppetry. Cyndi and I were fortunate to perform on one of the last episodes of WFMY’s legendary Old Rebel Show, delighted to run across George (Old Rebel) Perry at charity events, Muscular Dystrophy camp and shopping center openings. Adjusted for inflation, I was banking around $2,500 a week. Problem was, every mall resembled the one we just left. The sounds of sloshing waterfalls, garish florescent lamps bombarding the senses from every direction, the sickeningly sweet aroma from The Great American Cookie Company, the two-story high artificial plants (because real trees would

rather attempt suicide than live like that), became somewhat maddening. Land of Oz flew forever over the rainbow in 1980, a victim of gasoline shortages and price shocks that sent the short-trip vacation industry into a tailspin. A parcel was developed into condos but a large portion of the attraction still exists despite urban plunderers. The park is available for weddings and private parties during the summer. Every Friday in June, one-hour interactive expeditions through the Land of Oz will take place where attendees are called upon to play the Scarecrow and others. These events have been attracting legions of fans since Autumn at Oz in the 1990s, that event is still ongoing. Tickets for June’s Journey With Dorothy are $25 (plus taxes and processing fees) with proceeds going to further the preservation of that merry old Land of Oz. Details at www.landofoznc.com/journeywithdorothy. ! One day BILLY INGRAM may tell you about selling used cars on TV as The Mummy until then he’s stubbornly working on a 6th book despite the marketplace making it abundantly clear there is no demand for any such thing.

RiffTrax Live blasts Space Mutiny For almost 10, RiffTrax Live has been roasting the bad, the worse, and the ugly during its series of big-screen presentations. Film lives forever – whether it deserves to or not – and the RiffTrax team Mark Burger has selected some of the biggest, boldest, Contributing baddest cinematic atrocities in irrevercolumnist ent and irrepressible fashion. Next up is Space Mutiny, a low-budget wannabe sci-fi epic so cheesy that its outer-space scenes were lifted directly from the (original) Battlestar: Galactica T.V. series. Eccentric Cinema labeled the film “quite possibly the worst science-fiction/ space adventure film made in English.” Released in 1988, and relegated to dusty video shelves shortly thereafter, this marks the film’s 30th birthday – and RiffTrax is going to make it a celebration to remember. Rifftrax Live: Space Mutiny will be screened June 14, with an encore screening June 19, at more than 700 theaters nationwide, including three in the Triad: The Cinemark Brassfield Cinema 10 (2101 New Garden Road) and Regal Greensboro Grande Stadium 16 (3205 Northline Ave.) in Greensboro, and the Grand 18 Theatre (5601 University Parkway) in WinstonSalem. Welcome aboard the Southern Sun, a deep-space vessel on a mission to colonize a new planet. The battle is joined when hijackers attempt to wrest control of the ship and take the crew and passengers hostage, with only a few brave souls standing in the way. A “star-studded” cast of B-movie stalwarts includes Reb Brown (Uncommon Valor and the immortal Strike Commando) and real-life wife Cisse Cameron (Porky’s II and the amazing political send-up The Happy Hooker Goes to Washington) as the heroes, John Phillip Law (Barbarella and Otto Preminger’s mind-bending Skidoo) and James Ryan (the one-two punch of Kill or Be Killed and Kill and Kill Again) as the baddies, and Cameron Mitchell (Death of a Salesman and everyone’s favorite The Toolbox Murders) as the wise commander. Space Mutiny, also released as Mutiny in Space (which makes all the difference in the world) was filmed in South Africa during the Apartheid era, which was much WWW.YESWEEKLY.COM

frowned-upon by the Hollywood establishment. That didn’t stop independent (i.e. quick-buck) filmmakers from cranking out a slew of schlock movies on minuscule budgets – like this one! The ever-popular RiffTrax trio of Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett will provide ongoing commentary, and audiences will enjoy a bonus RiffTrax short in addition to the feature. For 11 years, the three were part of the core team that brought to life the cult series Mystery Science Theatre 3000, in which the crew of the Satellite of Love – stranded in outer space – was forced to watch transmissions of the worst movies ever made on Earth, which they commented upon with ribald wit and addle-brained insight. In 1988, Space Mutiny received a well-deserved MST3K treatment, and it remains one of the most popular episodes. Not only did MST3K amass a sizable worldwide following, but it also drew attention to scores of movies best forgotten and in some cases revived interest in them as potential cult classics. During its lengthy run, the series earned two Emmy nominations (both times for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Writing for a Variety or Music Program), and in 1993 received the prestigious Peabody Award. With the series canceled in 1999 after 197 episodes, and following a 1995 feature film, the series continues to live on in syndication and on home-video – as well as in the hearts and minds of its fervent fans worldwide. “We’re excited to revisit Space Mutiny because not only was it a favorite of the MST3K audience, it was a favorite of the writers,” said Nelson in an official statement, “and spending screen time with Reb Brown again will be like seeing an old friend. An old friend who wears shiny silver pants.” This marks the 27th “RiffTrax Live” event since first partnering with Fathom Events. Previous offerings have included Ed Wood’s infamous Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959), the indescribable Manos: The Hands of Fate (1966), George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (1968), Tommy Wiseau’s The Room (2003), Samurai Cop (1991), the Syfy Sharknado extravaganzas, and more. So long as there are bad movies to be ridiculed and mocked, there’s no end in sight! !

Brothers Pearl: The Triad’s Best Local Original Band

R

obert “Bobby” Alexander Smith, guitarist and singer of Brothers Pearl, knows that his band isn’t thought of primarily for writing John Adamian original tunes. So he and his bandmates @johnradamian were suitably surprised and honored Contributor when they learned that they won the Best Local Original Band category in the annual YES! Weekly readers’ poll. They also tied with Skulls & Whiskey to win the Best Tribute/Cover Band category. Brothers Pearl are mostly a cover band, but they do have some original songs, and they’re patiently working on some more, with hopes to record and release an EP of new material by the end of the year.

The main original tune they are known for, “Carolina Sunrise,” is a catchy one, though, and it has the virtue of seeming tailor-made for a very specific place and a very specific time. (It gets spun early in the morning occasionally on a station up in the mountains.) Every day, all over North and South Carolina there are people waking up — or, as in the case of the song, staying up all night — to see a Carolina sunrise. It’s a song, like “Here Comes the Sun,” “Damn, This Traffic Jam,” “I Don’t Like Mondays,” “Who’ll Stop the Rain,” “Working For the Weekend” and countless others that fits a specific time perfectly. And in this case, it fits a specific place as well. If you know the song and you happen to be awake in the Carolinas as the sun rises, you might find yourself singing its chorus. “Carolina Sunrise” sounds a lot like many of the covers that Brothers Pearl do in their live sets. It’s got a whiff of Southern rock, a country twang that’s offset by a dash of slow-burn soul. It’s a break-up

OFTEN IMITATED NEVER DUPLICATED song, with booze and stoicism twirled into the mix. “We’re finding that sound a little more, every gig,” Smith said of their blend. “We try to put a Southern sound on everything. Actually, we don’t try, it just happens.” Brothers Pearl cover classic songs by Tom Petty, the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd and more. They also play familiar contemporary hits, songs of the 21st century with a classic-rock feel, tunes by John Mayer, Sturgill Simpson, Gary Clark Jr. and others. I spoke to Bobby Smith last week as he and some of his musician friends were preparing to take a long Memorial Day weekend excursion around the New River. The forecast suggested that they would spend a fair bit of their time being soggy, but that didn’t seem to bother Smith, who seems to take a be-patient attitude with many things. That’s true of his approach to growing the band and writing new songs, too. Every once in a while you’ll meet someone who knew they wanted to be a songwriter before they even learned how to play music. But, for the most part, the urge to write original songs, and the confidence to do it, comes from playing other people’s songs, from studying the great pop, rock, soul, blues and folk standards of the past. You get those songs in your fingers and in your head and the logic becomes more internalized. Once you realize that some of the most timeless hits are made up of the same three chords and the most basic set of lyrics, it can impart that feeling that maybe you too could write a song that might have a little life to it. The Beatles stayed busy in Hamburg playing early rock covers before coming back to England and recording a few originals mixed in with established hits. The same thing happened with the Rolling Stones; their manager realized that the real money was to be found in those publishing royalties for writing original songs, so he locked Mick and Keith in a room and said “write something!” Smith is only 29, but he’s been playing music for over 20 years, having first started playing with his father, who was also a musician and a songwriter. “I grew up in Rockingham,” Smith said. “My dad taught me how to play drums. I was playing drums when I was 4. I was WWW.YESWEEKLY.COM

filling in at the children’s church when I was 7 or 8.” Smith was the youngest of five kids, and his oldest brother, along with his uncle, also taught him how to play music. While his dad was teaching Smith Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings, his brother was teaching him Pink Floyd and Steve Miller. Smith started out playing drums, but had to switch to guitar when he and his siblings moved with his mom to Greensboro. Living in an apartment required an instrument that could be played without annoying the neighbors. Brothers Pearl took shape as Bobby and the Good Times about five years ago, when Wade Ingram, the other guitarist in the band, was running a nightclub and needed a band on short notice for a Friday night. “We started by filling in a couple dead nights there and then moved to playing around town. Our crowd just kept growing, and we finally changed the name twoand-a-half years ago to Brothers Pearl.” The band, rounded out with Jordan Luther on bass and Mike Pitts on drums, stays busy, playing around the Triad, getting up to Virginia occasionally. Their fans — the same ones who voted for them in the readers’ poll — are loyal. Smith said they’ll see familiar faces when they’re playing gigs around the area, from fans who’ve gone on little road trips to catch a live set, and that enthusiasm makes the whole experience much more fun for the members of the band, who might otherwise be facing ho-hum out-of-town barroom crowd. Playing those long nights, with generally around three hours of live music, figuring out how to win a crowd, mixing old classics with slightly more deep cuts, has given Smith and Brothers Pearl a perspective on what makes durable rock ‘n’ roll. “I think it allows me to be more free,” Smith said. “I don’t feel like I have to be stuck in a niche trying to cut this cookie that everybody’s eating. I’m trying to make songs that mean something, that communicate to everybody.” ! JOHN ADAMIAN lives in Winston-Salem, and his writing has appeared in Wired, The Believer, Relix, Arthur, Modern Farmer, the Hartford Courant and numerous other publications.

I

SCREEN IT!

Hips don’t lie: Swagger missing from Solo: A Star Wars Story

BY MATT BRUNSON

first saw Star Wars upon its original release during the summer of ’77, when I was a mere lad of 11. There I was loving it, loving it, loving it — a spunky princess! a dashing hero! an imposing villain! — and, after nearly an hour, figured it couldn’t get any better. I was wrong. At the 48-minute mark, in saunters Han Solo, and this wholesome entertainment found the rough-hewn edge it needed to truly kick it into overdrive. As superbly played by Harrison Ford, Solo was a rogue, a scoundrel, a mercenary, and a guy who — before George Lucas got wimpy with the Special Editions — had no problem shooting first. And until Lucas inexcusably regressed the character a tad in Return of the Jedi, Solo was a beautifully conceived and executed figure, and his initial appearance in Star Wars and subsequent maturation in The Empire Strikes Back marks him as the best character to ever set foot in a storyline that unfolded a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. For the vast majority of my life, Han Solo has been — along with Atticus Finch, Indiana Jones, James Bond, and a few others — one of my defining cinematic heroes, which is why it pains me to see the character’s iconic dimensions reduced so drastically and dramatically in Solo: A Star Wars Story ( ). To be sure, the movie largely delivers on entertainment value, and while there are no specific moments that rank among the best in the franchise (even the much-maligned prequels had some formidable setpieces), the picture is zippy enough to earn a modest recommendation. But while those folks who love all things Star Wars regardless of quality will adore it, those of us who grew up with the franchise since a young age and find it still rooted in our DNA deserved something better than what director Ron Howard and screenwriters Lawrence Kasdan and Jonathan Kasdan deliver. The biggest hurdle, of course, was finding an actor who could do both Han Solo and Harrison Ford justice. Stepping into such an iconic character created by such a popular actor is a daunting task for any young thespian, and Alden Ehrenreich probably does as well as just about anyone else who might have been cast (certainly, he’s a better choice than such auditionees as Miles Teller, Dave Franco, Scott Eastwood and Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Ehrenreich, so terrific in the Coens’ YES! WEEKLY

Hail, Caesar!, isn’t bad here, but he doesn’t vanish into the character like Ewan McGregor did with Obi-Wan Kenobi. It was easy to see McGregor morph into Alec Guinness; it’s impossible to see Ehrenreich morph into Ford. This isn’t entirely the actor’s fault, as the Kasdans have created a Solo who’s altogether too soft and sweet. “I’m not one of the good guys!” bellows Solo at one point, but that’s absolutely not true. Other characters, like Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover, who does manage to create a bridge to Billy Dee Williams) and newbie Beckett (Woody Harrelson), are more Solo-esque than Solo himself, and while the idea is doubtless to toughen up the character in the next installment (Solo 2: Yet Another Star Wars Story), there needs to be a foundation in this film for such a development, and it’s woefully missing. In addition to Beckett, other players new to the saga include the villainous Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany, taking a break from his vision quest), Solo’s childhood love Qi-ra (Emilia Clarke), Beckett’s

MAY 30 - JUNE 5, 2018 - TRIAD’S BEST

sweetheart/sidekick Val (Thandie Newton, mostly wasted), and a pilot named Rio Durant (voiced by Jon Favreau). These are acceptable characters, but the same can’t be said of Lando’s co-pilot, a droid known as L3-37 (voiced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge). Simply put, L3-37 is one of the worst characters to ever appear in a Star Wars film, perhaps ranking only under Jar Jar Binks, little Annie Skywalker, and Jabba the Hutt’s belching baby. L3-37 is supposed to be an activist droid who’s forever demanding equal rights, but she’s an ill-conceived embarrassment. Apparently, the Kasdans and Lucas were attempting to be woke to today’s progressive issues by clumsily interjecting this character, but the truth is that she instead comes across like a conservative’s caricatured version of a feminist, complete with huge “hips” derived straight from the Rush Limbaugh playbook (cuz, you know, FemiNazis and all). Honestly, I’m surprised they didn’t find a way to add hair to the robotic legs of this tone-deaf character. The story proper — basically, a caper

yarn involving the theft of valuable coaxium fuel — offers little in the way of surprises and adds nothing to the saga’s mythology. It’s generic enough that, stripped of the sci-fi elements, Sandra Bullock and company could have employed it for the upcoming Ocean’s film. Where Solo: A Star Wars Story mainly succeeds is in its ability to offer satisfying scenarios that loop back to stories we heard in the original films, from the initial meeting between Han and Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) to the game that allowed Han to snatch the Millennium Falcon away from Lando. These sequences are infinitely amusing even if they’re ultimately unnecessary. After all, part of the mystique of Han Solo emanated from his lack of a backstory, and filling in the gaps diminishes rather than enhances his legacy. In retrospect, Sy Snootles: A Star Wars Story or Porkins: A Star Wars Story would have been more appreciated, thus leaving the larger-than-life character of Han Solo to remain unblemished in our memory banks from a long time ago. !

STAGE IT!

Upcoming exhibits at TAG

T

heatre Art Galleries of High Point announces the opening of a new summer exhibition. The show will open on Thursday, May 31 and run through Aug. 3. An Opening Reception will be held the evening of May 31 from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at TAG. The exhibition and opening reception are free and open to the public. HEATH SLANE: Images Along the Continuum will be featured in the Main Gallery. High Point native Heath Slane’s love of photography began through a course of study as a high school student at The Madeira School in Washington, DC. She continued to follow her passion at the International Center of Photography in New York City, where she lived for almost 10 years. Focusing on capturing life in the city through streetscapes, her work was sold in a SOHO gallery. Initially working with 35mm, she eventually switched to medium format. In 1992 she moved to Los Angeles where she lived for 24 years and exhibited her work in an exhibit at the Zipper Gallery. While in NYC, Heath made annual pilgrimages to New Mexico, where she connected with its unique landscape and through her lens captured the world of Georgia O’Keefe. But it was while she was in LA that Heath, along with her sister Landon, turned her focus to jewelry, founding Slane & Slane, a highly successful line of jewelry which was often inspired by architectural elements. Her love of photography and jewelry merged as she also exhibited and sold her work in their stores in New York and LA. When travelling back to New York, Heath began to capture various unique moldings and building details though her photography to use as inspiration for jewelry design. This use of shapes and textures was an “easy marriage” and found expression in a distinctive look for the jewelry that was immediately recognizable as Slane & Slane. Her time spent in factories where the jewelry was produced was reminiscent of her childhood days where she spent time in her father’s hosiery mill. This resonated with Heath and led to a series of industrial photographs from the factories. In addition to images from NYC and New Mexico, the exhibit will feature photography from Africa, whose landscapes shared many similarities with the American Southwest. Also featured will be images from New Orleans and her mother’s childhood farm in Pleasant Garden. Heath now resides in Charleston, South Carolina. “Anonymous Ancestors”, an installation will be featured

in the Upstairs Gallery. To stand within Columbia, South Carolina, artist Susan Lentz’s installation, Anonymous Ancestors, is to become immersed in the myriad of family stories handed down through generations. Each snapshot is a frozen moment on life’s timeline. Letters and words clipped from vintage print material allow one’s mind to wander, envisioning forgotten friends, past holidays, ancient occasions, former cars and hilarious fashion trends. Yet, all the images are anonymous. The photos come from yard sales, auctions and thrift stores. Who are these people? Who really knows? They are distant aunts and uncles, cousins, grandparents, siblings and in-laws. They are society’s family tree, our collective wall of ancestors. “Lowering the Tracks” will be featured in the Hallway Gallery. Before 1939, traveling across High Point meant waiting for stopped trains. Tracks crossing the major north and south roads divided the city in half as frequent trains loaded and unloaded. In the late 1930s, the city seized the opportunity provided by the federal New Deal funding to lower the track bed 35 feet below street grade. Costing nearly $1.5 million and taking over 10 years to complete, the massive project changed the downtown landscape and impacted High Point’s development. This exhibit is in collaboration with the High Point Museum. The Annual Middle School Art Exhibition will be featured in the Kaleidoscope Gallery with art work by many of the students from our area middle schools. Theatre Art Galleries is located in downtown High Point at 220 E. Commerce Ave. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from noon-5 p.m. For more information contact the TAG office at 336-887-2137 or visit www.tagart.org. !

MAY 30 - JUNE 5, 2018 - TRIAD’S BEST

On May 1, as airmen of the 91st Missile Wing Security Forces traversed the gravel back roads of North Dakota between two of the nuclear missile launch sites they are charged with Chuck Shepherd protecting, the back hatch of their truck fell open, allowing a 42-pound metal box of explosive grenade rounds to fall out. Despite deploying more than 100 airmen to walk the entire 6-mile route the team had driven, The Washington Post reported on May 15, the ammunition still hadn’t been found. The Air Force’s Office of Special Investigations has offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of the box and has alerted local farmers and oil field vendors in the area that the box could be dangerous if damaged.

ANIMAL ANTICS

— In Lodi, California, a small black cat took up residence on May 11 on a high ledge near the large outdoor sign of a Chili’s restaurant and thwarted attempts by management, who self-identified as “cat people,” to be rescued. As customers took pictures, Restaurant Cat, as it came to be known, stared down calmly, KTXL TV reported. But when Chili’s employees used a ladder to try to reach it, the cat climbed behind the neon chili pepper and wouldn’t come out, so they left food and water. Presumably it’s keeping the pigeons away. — Meanwhile, in Perth, Australia, another restaurant has taken a novel approach to a different animal problem: Customers at Hillary’s 3Sheets are being offered water guns to shoot at seagulls, which have been ruining diners’ waterfront meals. “It was bad,” owner Toby Evans told Nine Network television on May 16, admitting the idea was “a desperate measure. Before, they’d wait until customers had finished and got up, but now they’re getting cheekier and cheekier.” Customers are on board, saying the pistols are working. (Maybe they need a Restaurant Cat of their own.)

BUT, WHY?

— Making good on his promise, Welshman Mark Williams, 43, celebrated his third world snooker championship by conducting the post-match news conference at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England, in the buff. Williams, who beat John Higgins of Scotland on May 7, is the event’s oldest winner in 40 years, Reuters noted. “I’m not going to say anything stupid ... but to be honest if I won this next year, I’d cartwheel

down here naked,” Williams promised. — The Daytona Beach International Airport was briefly evacuated early on May 11 when John Greenwood, 25, caused a ruckus as he rode around the baggage carousel in the nude, trying to get out onto the tarmac, reported News4Jax. Sheriff’s deputies shocked him with a Taser, to which he responded: “We gotta get outta here, there’s a bomb going to go off. I planted a bomb in the bathroom.” After sweeping the airport, officials found no explosives, but Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said they did find Greenwood’s clothes in a backpack hidden in a hole in the bathroom wall. Described by Chitwood as a frequent flyer, Greenwood is known to local law enforcement, and he admitted taking drugs on Thursday night. He faces several charges after the incident.

EASY WAY OUT

Like any resourceful mom, Johanna Giselhall Sandstrom of Kyrkhult, Sweden, made lemonade out of lemons after she discovered a spelling error in her newly acquired tattoo. Sandstrom had asked the tattoo artist to entwine the names of her two children, Nova and Kevin, on her arm, and it wasn’t until she arrived home that she realized the tattoo read “Kelvin” instead of “Kevin.” “My heart stopped and I thought I was going to faint,” Sandstrom told local newspaper Blekinge Lans Tidning. Removing the tattoo would require multiple treatments, she learned, so Sandstrom decided instead to change her 2-year-old son’s name to Kelvin, The Independent reported on May 16. “When I thought more about it, I realized that no one else has this name,” she said. “It became unique. Now we think it is better than Kevin.”

WEIRD SCIENCE

For two years, Kendra Jackson of Omaha, Nebraska, “had a box of Puffs ... everywhere I went,” due to constant sneezing, coughing and nose-blowing that started after she hit her face on the dashboard during a car accident in 2013, she told KETV. Multiple doctors told her allergies were the cause, but eventually she was diagnosed with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak — her brain fluid was leaking into her nasal cavity at the rate of about a half-pint a day. In early May, Nebraska Medicine rhinologist Dr. Christie Barnes plugged the small hole between Jackson’s skull and nostrils with her own fatty tissue, giving Jackson the relief she had been seeking for years. !

Greetings!

elcome to our favorite issue of the year, The Triad’s Best! As many of you may know, this is our biggest and most read issue all year and something we spend several months working on. This year’s voting was incredible. We saw many repeat winners and Triad favorites claim wins and runner-up honors. There were also a lot of newcomers to jump out ahead. The way we listed everyone this year is pretty simple: There are “winners” and “runners-up.” As voting was fierce and highly competitive, you will see additional runners-up listed. This was done due to the closeness of the vote counts, and in some cases ties in the runnerup categories.

There are many people to thank for making this issue possible: -To our readers, thank you for picking up our awesome paper, taking time to vote, and offering your suggestions and ideas. -To the winners and runners-up, congratulations to you and know that we are all so glad to have you and your business in the Triad. We could not do this without you, and we appreciate being apart of your growth and success! - To Alex and Austin, the best design staff in the Triad! Thank you so much for your diligence and patience on this enormous issue. -To the sales team, simple and sweet: you crushed it! - To our writers and photographers, thank you so much for making it happen. Show your support and share photos of your favorite winners and runners-up on social media by tagging us and using the hashtag #YESTriadsBest2018.

The Weatherspoon Art Museum is an art gallery owned by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro that is free and open to the public. “It always feels like an honor to be named the best gallery,” director Nancy Doll said. “It indicates to me that we are presenting the kinds of exhibitions and programs that are engaging and meaningful to people. Your support helps us makes it happen and were very grateful to everybody who supports us and visits us.” When people think of the Weatherspoon, they think of contemporary art and challenging exhibitions, Doll said. “I don’t mean artistically, but challenging them to look at things through different points of view, to look at issues and to get a better understanding of the state of art today.” The new exhibition, “Dread and Delight: Fairy Tales in an Anxious World” opens on Aug. 25.

Triad’s Best Visual artist

ART BY JOMO Artist Jordan Morris, aka JoMo, wrote in a Facebook message that there must have been a mistake when he got the news that he was voted the Triad’s Best Visual Artist. He wrote that there were many talented artists that were nominated and some that weren’t. He wrote that it feels great to have “garnered that kind of support to come out on top.” “It’s so good to know there are plenty of other strange and fun humans out there still, and seriously awesome,” Morris wrote. “Many thanks to anyone that’s supported me throughout the years. I’d also like to thank the negative or toxic ones too, Y’all get me even more hungry to do more and better.” Morris said his Gucci Mane ice cream cone and the “infamous scrotus, aka Trump nuts” is what people think of when they hear Art by JoMo. Coming up, Morris will be attending Adult Swim On The Green in Raleigh on June 3, Zinefest at Revolution Mill on July 29 and he hopes to be back at the Food Truck Festival in August.

Triad’s Best Tattoo/Piercing Studio

ART ATTACK TATTOO

Owner Marc Rainville opened Art Attack 10 years ago with a mission to provide “a different type of atmosphere and attitude,” he wrote in an email. Even though there are other “amazing studios” in the Triad, Rainville wrote that it is “truly an honor” for Art Attack to win the Triad’s Best Tattoo/Piercing Studio. “After being runner-up numerous times, it’s exciting to have finally claimed the top spot,” he wrote. “I certainly don’t take credit individually, as I realize it’s always been a team effort. I’ve been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work alongside an amazing group of artists and friends. All of them have been instrumental in some way and contributed to our ongoing success.” Without the support from “wonderful clientele,” Rainville wrote that “none of what we have done, or will continue to do in the future, would even be possible. So, to all that continue to show us your love and support, thank you.”

Triad’s Best Club/Party DJ

DJ SNOW

DJ Snow (whose real name actually is D.J. Snow) wrote in an email that it feels great and is an honor to have been voted the Triad’s Best Club/Party DJ for 2018. Snow wrote that he has been a DJ in the Triad for more than 15 years and has been a resident/DJ for almost every nightclub that has been in the Triad. DJ Snow’s current residency is at The Last Resort for Wake Forest’s college night on Thursdays and he also spins at Nitro’s in Randleman and will be spinning at Bongos Night Club in Winston-Salem starting June 7. “ I like to thank all the fans, friends and relatives for taking the time out of your day to vote for me,” he wrote. “I know we all have super busy lives and to ask someone to pause what they are doing and take 10 minutes to vote for me is asking a lot. I’m honored to have been nominated. There are a lot of great DJs in this area and I am so grateful that I was chosen to be this year’s Best Club DJ.”

The Triad’s Most Original And Unique Bar

MONSTERCADE

THANK YOU for voting us

Owner Carlos Bocanegra and general manager Laurie Ruroden wrote in an email that they wanted Monstercade to win “Best Morgue,” “but, alas, we came in 4th. So, this is just as good!” Bocanegra and Ruroden wrote that Monstercade was voted the Triad’s Most Original and Unique Bar because “Twas the will of Xenu, Obviously…” They would like to say to voters and supporters, “from the hearts of our bottoms, thank you!” Ruroden and Bocanegra wrote that when people think of Monstercade, they usually “think of the smell” and Monstercade is most known for “having the worst ‘Caprese Salad’ in town (Try the ‘Shawarma’).” Some memorable moments from Monstercade have been “Dropping a pair of golden, bejeweled testicles on Trump’s head for New Year’s, The ‘Mystery Date Bachelor Auction’ for ‘Planned Parenthood,’ The Psychic Toe Reader, oh and our monthly ‘Nite Moves Dance Party,’ of course!” In the near future, Monstercade will be having “Monster Flea: A designer-toy/pop/lowbrow/weirdo art/ design/apparel pop-up Flea Market” on June 24, “Cure-eoke: Robert Smith LookA-Like Karaoke” on July 4 and “The 70’s Dickso Dance Party” a Winston-Salem PRIDE fundraiser on July 27.

The Triad’s Best Food Truck

BOONE DOGGIES Drew Ausley is the owner and operator of the black and yellow food truck with the big yellow dog and Appalachian State logos on it. Boone Doggies Food Truck serves all-beef hot dogs, all-beef smoked sausages and hand cut french fries. Ausley has been driving Boone Doggies around the Triad since 2014. “I was doing a little shopping and when [I got] the news I was just fist-pumping in the middle of the aisle. I was overly ecstatic,” Ausley said when he learned Boone Doggies won the Triad’s Best Food Truck. “We’ve been setting up in the same location for the past four years (intersection of Stratford and Clemmonsville Road) we’ve just developed a really awesome following and great people come out and support us. A lot of folks come out a couple times a week. We just definitely wouldn’t be where we are today without their continued support these past four years.”

The Best Reason To Live In The Triad

ZENFIELD KOMBUCHA

Owner Maggie Infield wrote in an email that “it feels pretty amazing” that her small business Zenfield Kombucha won the 2018 Best Reason to live in the Triad award. “I would like to say ‘thank you!’ for all of the love and support you have shown me since I started this journey,” Infield wrote. “Thank you for giving myself and my product a chance. This has been a dream come true for me and would have never been possible had it not been for the Kitchen Connects GSO program. I am forever grateful for each and every one of you!” Infield said she believes Zenfield Kombucha deserves this award because it is different than all the other brands of kombucha in the Triad. She wrote that it has a “fizzy, never flat, refreshing taste” and is made in Greensboro with locally sourced ingredients (when available) from Farlow Farm and Shorefarm Organics. “You can find Zenfield Kombucha in High Point, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Asheville and Black Mountain,” Infield wrote. “And remember, ‘Life is too short to drink flat booch!’”

The Triad’s Best Podcast

FREE PIZZA

Daniel White and Jacob Beeson are the hosts of the podcast Free Pizza, that has been running for “a year and some change” now. “The long-term goal is to get free pizza,” Beeson said. White said Free Pizza is a podcast that celebrates the lives of a variety of different creatives in the Triad. “I think with any artistic endeavor, you have ups and downs and this is one of the ups that makes the downs better,” Beeson said of winning The Triad’s Best Podcast. “I can’t thank you enough, we did not expect to win. We didn’t think it was even possible.” “There are so many things that happen in the Triad (and the surrounding world) that takes people’s attention and it is cool that people took time to listen to what we are doing and to vote for us, I think that is a very big victory,” White said. “Big shout out to everyone that voted because that is amazing and we can’t thank you enough. Stay tuned we have a lot of things coming that is more than a podcast.”

The Triad’s Best Consignment Shop

VINTAGE TO VOGUE

Owner Jenn Graf said when people think of Vintage To Vogue they think of its “uniqueness” and its “one-of-a-kind” clothing. “It feels amazing receiving validation for all of our hard work and having some of the most amazing consigners, customers, and clients that come in. It feels like all the hard work is paying off,” Graf said of winning the Triad’s Best Consignment Shop. “We are a consignment store but we also try to be so much more. We want people to have an experience walking in the door. If it wasn’t for people that follow Vintage To Vogue on social media, consign and shop with us, the point would be moot. We owe everything to the people that show us support. And we are very humbled by winning the award for Best Consignment.” Vintage To Vogue will have a grand opening at the end of June to celebrate moving to a new location at 530 S. Elm St. in Greensboro. Follow Vintage To Vogue on social media to learn more details.

The Triad’s Best Thrift Clothing Store

REVISION VINTAGE

Lindsey Sprague, Pam Cooper, Brittany Rudd, Kristin McGhee and Kim McHone are all co-owners of Revision Vintage. After being only one year in business, Cooper said it feels awesome to win The Triad’s Best Thrift Clothing Store. “We put a lot of love into it and try to make it fun and affordable for the community,” Cooper said. “We are happy that we are getting a good response. So we really appreciate it. Our customers, friends, family and everybody has helped make it possible for us.” The pricing, aesthetic, curation and oddities make Revision Vintage different than other thrift stores in the Triad, Cooper said. The five women all have different styles, but similar tastes and they keep their inventory “fresh all the time.” Coming soon, Revision Vintage plans to celebrate one year with live music and food in the summer but there is no set date yet. Follow Revision Vintage on social media for more details.

The Triad’s Best Radio Personality

CHRIS KELLY

OF ROCK 92’S“TWO GUYS NAMED CHRIS” Co-hosts Chris Kelly and Chris Demm (along with producer Josh “Biggie” Ellinger and meteorologist Dave Aiken) make up the team for the “Two Guys Named Chris” radio show on Rock 92.3. Kelly said it “feels very nice” to be voted as the Triad’s Best Radio Personality, but he made it clear that the show is a “total team effort.” “I’d like to thank [YES! Weekly readers] for voting for me,” Kelly said. “I assume there was some Russian hacking involved. Certainly there had to be, and I’m sure this will be investigated for at least two years. It is really nice for people to continue to support the morning show because we have been on such a long time. I just want to say thank you for doing that because we take a lot of pride in it, and it’s really rewarding when we win an award like this.” “Two Guys Named Chris” airs Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 11 a.m.

NOT JUST FUN & GAMES: FRANK MYERS AUTO MAXX F

rank Myers Auto Maxx might as well be rechristened “Myers and Sons,” because Frank’s son Tracy Myers has been running the show since purchasing the dealership from his father over a decade back. Tracy is part of the ‘family business,’ as evidenced by the fact that his great-grandfather opened the first Frank Myers store 90 years ago. Head to the dealership today and you are likely to run into Tracy, known locally as the guy who wears the red, white and blue top hat in crazy commercials on TV. His smiling face greets all comers, clear evidence of the love and passion he has for the business and for people. That same passion has driven the business to unimaginable success. Frank Myers Auto Maxx is credited with revolutionizing the industry, bringing his dealership unparalleled prestige and respect. Tracy believes their triumph is underlined by the way they go about their business. As he puts it himself, “everyone sells the same cars we sell.” The difference between the way they run the show and other dealers is a commitment to the customer and not to the bottom-line. Focus on the former, and the latter improves automatically. A fundamental tenet of their long-lasting success is relying on likeminded people who are as enthusiastic and passionate about servicing customers as his family has always been. At this dealership, people always come first. In fact, the business decided to do away with commissions for their sales team. Their salespeople, affectionately named Non-Commissioned Solutions Providers, don’t have to rely on antiquated dog-eat-dog commissioned based pay plans to make a living. This frees them up to focus on the customer instead of the money. This is just one example of the innovation Tracy brought to the table since taking over, and it comes as

VOTED BEST USED CAR DEALERSHIP IN THE TRIAD no surprise that the dealership has received a horde of awards over the years. You would be hard-pressed to name an industry award that Frank Myers Auto Maxx hasn’t won. Back in 2006, Tracy was the youngest person to ever be named the National Quality Dealer of the Year, which is the highest obtainable honor in the used car industry. Since then, the dealership has continued to rake in accolades. INC Magazine has named the dealership one of the fastest growing small businesses in the US for the past six years. Tracy Myers also won the CIADA Community Service Award in 2017 for his work with the Christmas Toy Drive to support The Salvation Army. In addition, the dealership has been voted Best Place to Buy a Used Car for the second consecutive year by the readers of YES! Weekly. The ever-humble Tracy attributes the success of his business to God and his team, stating that they put in the hard work that brings him the awards. The core tenet of this sustained acclaim and respect is an emphasis on

customer services. To this end, Tracy introduced a number of initiatives that broke industry norms, including the Everybody Rides Program. The idea behind the program is helping people with less than perfect credit own a nicer, newer car. The dealership also implemented several other unique programs such as their Layaway Program, an IronClad Money Back Guarantee and a Lifetime Engine Warranty. According to Tracy, their goal is to provide so much value to their customers that they never even consider the competition. And the best part is that the emergence of dealers trying to emulate Frank Myers Auto Maxx doesn’t seem to bother Tracy in the slightest. So much so, he welcomes it with an air of pride, safe in the knowledge that his dealership is the gold standard in used cars. A documentary detailing the story of the Myers’ family, Car Men, aired on The BIO Channel and received an Emmy nomination. The documentary is now available on YouTube and the dealership’s website.

At this point, it would be hard to imagine that Tracy almost decided to wave the car dealership industry goodbye. Back in the 80s, Frank got Tracy to work in the detail shop of his dealership, a job that he hated. Instead, he went off to college, where ironically, he found a job at a Toyota dealership. His success there prompted him to rejoin the family business and the rest, as they say, is history. Tracy now admits it was a blessing that him and his dad had an opportunity to spend time together at work, with the hope that the next generation of the Myers family develops the passion for leading the business forward.

MAY 30 - JUNE 5, 2018 - TRIAD’S BEST

I’m a 33-year-old woman, and I’ve always been thin. I lost about 12 pounds after a tough breakup. I’m working on getting back to a healthier Amy Alkon weight. However, Advice people keep making cutting remarks Goddess about how thin I look. Yesterday a friend said, “You’re so skinny it’s gross!” I’d noticed that she’d gained quite a bit of weight, but I didn’t say anything...because that would be rude! She made other digs about my weight, and upon hugging me goodbye, she said, “Eww, is that your shoulder bone?!” What’s with this double standard? There’d be hell to pay if I said the slightest thing about anyone’s weight gain. — Tempted To Lash Back It is more taboo than ever to make cracks about a woman’s weight — that is, unless she doesn’t have a whole lot of it. Then it’s open season: “Wow, what happened to you? Forget where the supermarket is?” However, it probably is not “people” but “people who are female” who are thinshaming you. Welcome to female intrasexual competition — competition between women — which is covert and sneaky (and thus poisonous) in a way male-on-male competition is not. Men, who evolved to be the warriors and protectors of the species, tend to be openly aggressive. A guy will give another guy a beat-down or publicly dis him: “Yeah, bro, sure you can get a chick to go home with you — if you’ve got five grand for a sex robot.” Psychologist Tracy Vaillancourt explains that women seem to have evolved to avoid physical confrontations (and in-your-face verbal attacks that can lead to them), which jeopardize a woman’s ability to have children or fulfill her function as an infant’s principal caregiver and meal provider. Women instead engage in “indirect aggression” to “reduce the mate value of a rival,” like by “disparaging the competitor’s appearance ... or using derisive body and facial gestures to make the rival feel badly about herself and thus less willing to compete.” (Yeah, that’s right. It seems “Mean Girls” was a documentary.) The tricky thing about these indirect attacks is the plausible deniability they confer. Call a woman out for thin-shaming you and she’s likely to duck behind “I’m just worried about your health!” So instead, simply tell her that remarks about your weight hurt your feelings. Speaking up like this says that you aren’t likely to let any future digs slide,

yet you remain on moral high ground — instead of giving back in kind: “Wow, looks like you’ve been exercising a lot. Do you do the backstroke in frosting?”

YOU HAD ME AT HELL

I’m a married gay man, and I hate my in-laws. They were disgustingly abusive to my husband when he was a child. They’re in failing health now, and it’s important to him to visit them a couple of times a year. How do I get through these mandatory trips? — Dreading It It’s probably tempting to buy his family the sort of classic furniture you think they deserve. Unfortunately, they only ship that model of chair to prisons with a death row. There is actually opportunity within this biannual awfulness you two have to go through. In the movies, people show their love through grand gestures: “We’ll always have Paris!” In real life, according to psychologist John Gottman’s research, the strongest, happiest relationships are made up of constant mundane little loving interactions: “You were so sweet to me in Costco.” Gottman finds that the key determinant in whether a relationship succeeds or fails is the ability to trust one’s partner. This means not just trusting that they won’t cheat but trusting that they’ll continually make you and your needs a priority, on a moment-bymoment basis. For example, as Gottman puts it: “Can I trust you to be there and listen to me when I’m upset? ... To choose me over your mother, over your friends? ... To help with things in the house? To really be involved with our children?” So, though you can’t undo the past, when you’re on one of these visits, you can shift your focus from hating your in-laws to showing your love for your husband. Listen. Tell him, “I know this is really hard for you.” Hug him. Rub his feet. Once you’re out of the inlaw inferno, you might discuss trying to make a habit of this sort of thing — really being present for each other in the numerous “unimportant” moments of life. This will keep you from being one of those couples frantically trying to plug gaping holes in their relationship with extravagant gestures. Typically, these are ultimately futile — too little, too late — and tend to not come off as planned. For example, if you’re having 150 doves released over you as you renew your vows, you’d better see that they’re all wearing tiny gold lame diapers. !
