The worst school shooting in American history occurred on Valentine’s Day 2018 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, in which 17 people were killed and another 17 injured. To quote Franklin Roosevelt, it was a day that will live in infamy – and, not surprisingly, it sparked a worldwide media frenzy and a FIRESTORM OF CONTROVERSY. 66 Within the Triad, music communities work as avenues of connection between themselves and fans. ETC. GREENSBORO: A LOCAL COLLECTIVE THAT USES ART TO REACH THE HEART BY NAIMA SAID
Six friends who wanted to give back to their community came together to create Etc. As a collective of artists themselves, they envisioned a lifeline for the DIY community and a safe space for them to bring art, expression, and connections to 1333 Grove St. Mike Nardon, Ben Braxton, Matt Goshow, Jak Kerley, Yanni Xoinis, and Briana Strickland make up our Etc. Greensboro team. When Mike first saw the empty building, he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. “Originally he was thinking of a restaurant. Matt and I had a conversation in September about opening something like this, especially in a wake of a collective trauma that deeply impacted our world and community, but he felt apprehensive initially. After thinking it over and hearing the passion and creative visions that could be possible from that conversation, the idea grew into what it is becoming,” said Strickland. Ralph’s Plant Shop joined the team on April 22nd, 2021 as an intimate and accessible plant shop for gardening needs and plant lovers. All plants are grown in house, and the shop is an offshoot of Ralph’s family’s plant shop, Soviero’s Tri-County Garden Center. Etc.’s first market grand opening took place on April 25th, 2021, and second market on May 22nd, with a third market coming up June 20th between 12-5pm. Attending the second market, approximately ten vendors showcased their handcrafted jewelry, stained glass, artwork, and vintage clothing that intrigued

Etc. has expressed future initiatives in the works for the summer that brings to
life independent filmmakers in the area with movie nights, live concerts with local bands, and open mic nights for voices who deserve to be heard. The team and I shared a moment of laughter and deep conversation about our favorite horror films since Jak and Yani, also known as Yaniboy are not only Etc.’s graphic designers, but both share a love for filmmaking and wanted to open the doors for others who share a similar drive. “Glenwood is such a historical area that shares diversity amongst its people, so when Matt and Mike came up with the name, the group agreed and finalized. “I thought it was perfect, it encompassed what we are trying to do. It is about a community and free space that gives meaning to a variety of people doing a multitude of progessive things. I think everyone wanted to see that continue after COVID-19 hit,” said Braxton. The team agreed that all their local artists are renowned, but one in particular stands out to them, the Crickets Boomerang Bookshop. “It is one of the coolest things I have seen since I’ve been in Greensboro. It incorporates education, knowledge, and is a black owned business shop on a bus. The beauty of art is that anything can be art,” said Strickland. The team has strong involvement in
activism work, and utilizes their resources and talents to send these messages across their community. “Activism is living in the truth, connecting with people, hearing different stories, being involved in lots of different ways — you can protest in a one on one conversation with someone, a real authentic conversation, and art contributes in ways we can’t describe but see for ourselves,” said Goshow. Matt and Mike have been friends for over 15 years, “doing something together was inevitable,” said Nardone. Strickland lastly noted, “This collective has been a dream in all our hearts for many years so I think that’s why it all came together and manifested in that way. I’ve personally been planning this kind of thing for several years and hoped to see it come to vision by the time I turned 35. The opportunity came sooner than I thought and in a different way than I expected, a way where I feel we are all creating as one.” For more information about the Etc. team, and their numerous talents and achievements, Ralph’s Plant Shop, and upcoming market dates, check out their website: https://www.etcgso.com/team, Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ etc.gso, or Instagram: etc.gso. !

GSO City Council weighs in on delayed election
T
he upcoming election was a matter of importance on the agenda for the Greensboro City Council May 18, 2021 meeting listed under Item 36, Ian McDowell Resolution to Publish a Notice of Election for the November 2, Contributor 2021 Election. The meeting is listed on the city website as “hybrid,” meaning that city officials (with the exception of the mayor) were present in the council chamber (as was Rhino Times freelance reporter John Hammer), but the public was not. Mayor Pro Tem Johnson stated that council meetings would continue in this format until further notice. Midway through the meeting, a city clerk reported that the live broadcast on the city website had no audio; however, City Manager David Parrish confirmed that the broadcast on Spectrum Channel 13 and the Greensboro Television Network did have audio. The question of whether there will even be a City Council election in November was discussed but not voted on. Mayor Vaughan indicated that there would be

further discussion, and then a vote, on June 15. There were two speakers on the matter, both of whom favored a postponement of the election. Bradley Hunt, president of the Greensboro Chapter of the NAACP, stated that it is the position of his organization “that this body vote to postpone the Greensboro City Council elections initially scheduled to take place in November of 2021, until after U.S. Census data has been received, properly processed and certified.” Hunt reminded the council that, on February 23, Karen Brinson Bell, Executive Director of the North Carolina State Board of Elections, “urged the North Carolina General Assembly to delay all municipal elections until 2022, to be timed with the statewide election for the U.S. Senate and for numerous races.” Hunt also forewarned the council that “to have an election before the census data is certified would mean that the City of Greensboro would conduct an election with districts that may or may not reflect the actual demographics of the city,” and that to hold a November election might put the City of Greensboro “in direct violation of the one person, one vote mandate laid out in the U.S. Constitution’s Equal Protection clause.” Gary Kenton, the second speaker on the matter, read a letter from Ann Shaw and
Anna Fesmire, co-presidents of the League of Women Voters of the Piedmont Triad, which made similar arguments. “We are deeply concerned that citizens of Greensboro will be represented for four years by a mayor and city council that may not represent the voters of the new districts that will be drawn after the census certification. We urge you to petition the General Assembly for a delay.” Mayor Pro Tem Johnson thanked the speakers and said, “We will make an indepth consideration of both sides.” Mayor Vaughan said Senate Bill 7-72, filed on Tuesday by three Republican senators, offers “a path forward on how elections that do have districts that could be impacted by the Census would be able to delay it until after those census figures are tabulated.” Calling it “a very messy situation,” Vaughan predicted that the matter “will put us at odds with the voters no matter what we decide to do,” and that she hoped “the legislature will come up with a statewide fix. At-large representative Marikay Abuzuaiter agreed that it might be necessary to postpone the election. “Even if there is only a one percent chance that there will be redistricting, I believe that to err on the side of caution, we need to continue with this discussion and to hopefully delay.” District 1’s Sharon Hightower concurred. “I believe in fair elections, and I think this is the way to ensure fair elections. When we
talk about one person, one vote, we need to make sure that people are voting in the right districts.” District 5’s Tammi Thurm said she understood the problem with holding an election in November, but that, even with a delay, an election may be necessary before the census is ratified. “The soonest this data will be available, we are being told, is the end of September. There is nothing to say that we will actually get it in September, and we may not get it until December or January or February. I don’t think we should serve an extra year, and I think we have to leave ourselves open to the concept that, even if we put it off till March or May of next year, we may not be able to have that redistricting, and we just need to think about that.” Mayor Vaughn replied that one indication of the timeframe “is whether or not the census gets delivered to the White House in July.” District 2’s Goldie Wells said she was in favor of a delay. “We saw something, although it may not be anything official, that showed growth in District 2. We don’t want them to be left out. We could get a lot of flak from that.” ! IAN MCDOWELL is the author of two published novels, numerous anthologized short stories, and a whole lot of nonfiction and journalism, some of which he’s proud of and none of which he’s ashamed of.

Solomon’s Song: A&T Grad competes in semi-finale round on NBC’s The Voice Victor Solomon has always kept a John Legend song in his repertoire to sing. Now he can just ask John Legend which song he should sing. The 22-year-old North Carolina A&T Chanel Davis State University graduate is currently Editor competing on season 20 of NBC’s The Voice and competed in this week’s two-part final. Legend called Solomon’s performance’s Monday night one of the best he’s seen on the stage. Solomon performed Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me”, dedicated to his girlfriend, and “Freedom’’ by Beyonce featuring Kendrick Lamar. “I am so proud of you, Victor. I’ve seen you do everything on this show,” Legend said. “America, give this man a chance. Give him that V trophy. It’s custom made for him!” Solomon began early in life and he would continue honing that skill all the way to college, where he would go on to join the university’s Gospel Choir, along with serving on the Student Government Association Executive Board and winning Mister A&T and Mister HBCU pageants. His experience in SGA and as Miser A&T and Mister HBCU has carried over to the stage as well. “You have to be organized in everything that you do, and be strategic about certain decisions,” he explained. “Even in the leadership positions that I held, I needed to be on time and do what needed to be done so I could make it to the next level. The pageants have helped me out in my stage presence on the show.” For his Blind Audition Solomon sang Legend’s Grammy-award winning song Glory, eliciting a response from the artist. While Solomon admits it was bold, he was confident in his singing ability. “I loved the feedback that I got from it. I was on the radio, I was in the newspaper. The message behind it itself is a strong and powerful message. I also just love singing the song. It’s a great part of my voice and my vocal range, “ he said. “It was only a bonus to have John be a coach this season and me to be able to sing it in front of him so it was really great.” YES! WEEKLY

It was a bit of a challenge for him as well. “I’ve been singing this song for awhile. When they were telling me that John had never turned for anyone covering his songs so I thought ‘why not be the first?’ So it was exciting.” Coming from a single parent home with four siblings, the tight-knit family is super close and his mother is especially excited for him.
“My mom loves it. She’s very proud of me. We talk all the time,” he said. “As you’ve seen on the show I grew up in the church… My mom was really excited for me to sing I Can Only Imagine during the semi-finals. So, it’s been an incredible ride for all of us.” Solomon’s family aren’t the only one’s excited for his success. Behind him is a large network of N.C. A&T alumni, His-
torically Black Colleges and Universities alumni and brothers from the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. On May 19, 2021, N.C. A&T Chancellor Harold L. Martin tweeted: Congratulations @victorsolo_43! Your performances and composure have been phenomenal. Your #NCAT family is extremely proud. We will be cheering for you in the #Voice finale! #VicOnTheVoice #AggiePride He said he still gets nervous when he’s onstage and they are about to announce who will move forward, but thinking about his support system calms him. “It helps me calm my nerves just a little bit to know that I have Aggie Family, HBCU family and Alpha brothers out there supporting and voting,” he said. “It’s really exciting to know that I have such a big support system and I can’t wait to get back.” When he does return, Solomon will have a bag of new experiences including working with big names. “It’s been an incredible journey. This show is really just a platform to get exposure and to grow as an artist and to meet new people and that’s what I did,” he said. “I’m really grateful for this journey and this experience. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and I’m just grateful to be here.” He will also carry with him a new nickname. Legend calls him his “Classic Soul King” “That was incredible when I first heard that. I was almost thinking to myself ‘did he say that on his own or did someone pay him to say that?’ It was cool,” Solomon said laughing. “It felt really great to hear that come from him. It just affirms that I have a gift and that I’m here for a reason.” Until he returns Solomon thanks everyone for their support but asks that they continue to vote. “Thank you all for rocking with me since the beginning of this journey and Monday night please make sure you vote. Max out your vote. You can vote on the app, you can vote on the website as well, you can vote 10 times on each platform per email address,” he said. Let’s do it. Let’s bring it home back to the Aggies.” Voting ended Tuesday morning, May 25, at 7 a.m. ! CHANEL DAVIS is the current editor of YES! Weekly and graduated from N.C. Local Creatives to “Spark Conversation” about Issues of Difference in New Multimedia Play
S
BY JESSICA CLIFFORD
ince the beginning of the year, local creatives conceived, wrote, and rehearsed a one-act multimedia theatrical event about the importance of similarities and differences in humanity that is now coming to the Reynolds Place Theatre at the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts in mid-June. “Our Time: A Conversation in Black & White” is a three-person play based on a meeting of individuals, with one Black and another white, forced into conversation by an old hippie. The play, set in Winston-Salem, takes place after a Black Lives Matter rally and Sons of the Confederacy protest of the removal of a Confederate monument. The show starts at 7:30 p.m., running from June 10-12. Lynn Felder, a former, longtime reporter focused on the arts in the area and playwright of “Our Time,” brainstormed ideas for a play during a 24-week virtual class called the Creative Catalyst by Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. “Halfway through the course, you are expected to come up with what they call your dream project, and you get to your dream project by saying what is the change you want to see in the world,” Felder said. Her dream? For everyone to love everyone. “I just believe…under the skin, we are all the same, and that people are people, and there is no reason for us not to embrace one another’s differences,” Felder said. This is Felder’s first production, although she has seen thousands of plays, reviewed and read hundreds, and taken part in dozens. Before becoming a journalist, Felder was a dancer and actor. For about two decades, she was an editor and journalist at the Winston-Salem Journal. Felder’s moral compass has remained the same throughout her life. “When you grow up, and you’ve found that you have agency and that you have a voice, then you can do something, so this is the time,” Felder said. “I don’t want to put it out there that this is political because I’ve tried to be really balanced in it, as balanced as I could possibly be,” she said. As the play unfolds, the characters reveal different politics, although they find they have a lot in common, including their love for Jesus and their mothers as well as being economically challenged. “We live in fraught times, and I feel like YES! I have the authority to tell the story, but I didn’t want to put words in my two guys’ mouths, so I interviewed people across the political spectrum,” Felder said about the script. Felder interviewed local people to make the conversation turned argument more realistic, with four whose beliefs align with the Black character and four with the white. The interviews, all structured with the same questions, helped Felder develop the script. In addition, she let others read the script, including Nathan Ross Freeman, the cofounder and artistic director of Authoring Action and a local playwright. As a self-identified “old hippie,” Felder said the character with the same designation “speaks from me” as someone who wants people of opposing viewpoints to talk and as the person defending the press. According to Felder, the performance is primarily serious, with humorous interludes. “The play is a big, long argument. It starts out as a conversation, it turns into a discussion, it turns into a debate, it turns into an argument, it turns into a fight, and then there is some resolution and some surprises that happen,” Felder said. The play incorporates a range of art forms: music, poetry, and photography. Solomon Caldwell, a 2020 graduate of UNC School of the Arts School of Music, is the music director for the production. Caldwell, a bassist with a background in various genres, teamed up with Felder while taking the course as they were both interested in art that sparks conversation. Solomon said he and fellow musicians Gabrielle Walden and Alexis Ward would play original, improvised music “in response to what is in the script.” His favorite part of the show comes when the characters find similarities in each other. “I think there is a moment at the end, in the script, where they dialogue about each of their mothers, and I think that really
brings the humanity back to these two characters,” Caldwell said. “It strips away whatever preconceived labels they put on each other as well as us as the audience.” Veteran photographer Owens Daniels shared his photos for the production. The images are of the 2019 Sons of the Confederacy protest before the removal of a Confederate monument and 2020 rallies for Black Lives Matter, both in WinstonSalem. “They happened in different times,” Felder said about the rallies. “I’ve put them together, so I can get these guys together on stage.” Daniels started his photographic career at the U.S. Army Photographic School of Cartography. He is experienced in capturing photos using different styles and settled on portraiture. Drawn to candidness and social justice work, Daniels created his own style of photojournalism, with his work going towards freelance gigs for publications and exhibitions. As friends, Felder asked Daniels to showcase his photos for the production. He agreed. Felder said the photos would be incorporated as projections for the audience to see the real-life protests as a backdrop for the conversation. After “Our Time,” a talk-back session will occur where people can ask a variety of questions about the play’s production or content. “I hope that the play will spark conversations. That’s what my intention was,” Felder said. “I am also prepared to ask them the questions that I asked the people who I interviewed.” The production came together through a network of creatives looking for each other’s help. She added it has been a “very collaborative and dynamic process.” Sharon Andrews, a theater professor at Wake Forest University, is the director. Elizabeth Rief is the stage manager.
Grayson Moreno is production manager; with Devyn Tibbals, assistant production manager; Camryn Banks, lighting designer; Sam Hayes and Mac McClary/ Infinity AV LLC are light and sound consultants; all of UNCSA. Nik Parnell, sound, is a 2020 UNCSA graduate. Allison Lee Isley is the project photodocumentarian and Wiley Hausam, UNCSA, is a production consultant. A call was put out for auditions. Felder said they received a “nice turnout and got people who we think are really good.” The actors include Garry Wadell as Linc White, Brian Payne as Lance Black, and Abby Catoe as the old hippie. “It’s been a joy to work with everybody… you go to rehearsal and make revisions in the script, and it’s just a rush every night,” Felder said about developing the performance. While it is hard for many productions to pay creatives for their work, Felder said everyone directly involved with the production is paid. “I’m proud of that because people ask artists to do things for free all the time, so I’m happy that thanks to the Arts Council, we are able to pay everybody who is directly involved,” Felder said. As Caldwell notes, it is a “fulfilling” experience for him to do his work while getting paid. The various creatives hope audience members take something away from watching the performance. Felder said she hopes the play “moves the American conversation forward, even if it’s incrementally, to keep the slow arc of the moral universe bending toward justice and understanding.” For Caldwell, he wants people to take away a deeper sense of community. As for Daniels, he wants people to question how the rallies impacted them. “I want people to take away a snapshot of where they were and what they felt and ask themselves the question, who was I then, and am I the same person now?” Tickets for the production are free, with online registration required. Visit www. intothearts.org to register. Donations will be accepted. The Arts Council of WinstonSalem & Forsyth County will manage the donations. “Our Time” is supported, in part, by the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation through the Artists Thrive Initiative. According to Felder, if they completely sell out, they will add a production. !

[NEWS OF THE WEIRD] THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT
When Damien Desrocher, 28, decided to “return to nature” in December, it meant leaving his job as an air force Chuck Shepherd computer technician and moving to the northern French town of Wahagnies, where he started raising snails. But they’re not for eating, Reuters reported. Desrocher harvests “slime” from the snails and uses it to make bars of soap. A single snail will yield about 2 grams of slime. Desrocher needs about 80 grams of slime to make 15 100-gram soap bars. “It’s all in the dexterity of how you tickle,” he said as he demonstrated the harvesting technique. “I only touch it with my finger, you see it’s not violent, it’s simple.”
SILENT BUT DEADLY
In North Carolina, large stands of wetland forests along the coast have died, giving the areas an apocalyptic appearance, CNET reported. Salt water from rising seas and storm surges is causing the destruction of tens of thousands of acres. Researchers at North Carolina State University are studying the “ghost forests” to measure their environmental impact, which includes emitting greenhouse gases — carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide — that they call “tree farts.” Graduate student Melinda Martinez acknowledged that the trees don’t emit as much as the soils, but, she said, “Even the smallest fart counts.”
PUT A RING ON IT
Avid snorkeler Susan Prior of Norfolk Island, Australia, often sees small mullet fish with rings around their middles — usually plastic rings from juice and milk bottles, she said, according to the New York Post. “Mullet snuffle through the sand looking for food, making it so easy for a ring or a hair tie to flip over their noses and get stuck,” she wrote in a blog post. But in early May, Prior, who also takes underwater photos, captured a snap of a mullet fish sporting a gold wedding band. Prior remembered that she had seen a social media post about a lost wedding ring in the bay, but she couldn’t catch up to the fish to retrieve the item.

on May 8, he stopped off at the City Bar, where he and a friend bought a drink for another patron, Andrew Nierman, 32. The first drink they bought spilled on Nierman, so they furnished him with a replacement. But Nierman evidently wasn’t satisfied with that. “He grabbed my head and (bit) a chunk out of my nose,” Thayer told The Times-Picayune, then ran out and jumped in a car. Thayer, who was holding his nose together, and other witnesses ran outside and flagged down a deputy, who stopped Nierman. He admitted to biting Thayer but said he’d been “accosted” by him.

BRIGHT IDEA
Ever stepped off a curb unexpectedly or run into a pole while looking down at your phone? Minwook Paeng, an industrial design student at London’s Royal College of Art and Imperial College, has invented a device that will alert you to obstacles in your path: the Third Eye. A small translucent case shaped something like an eye affixes to the forehead with a thin gel pad, DeZeen reported, and “the black component that looks like a pupil is an ultrasonic sensor for sensing distance,” Paeng explained. When the gyroscope senses the head angled downward, the plastic “eyelid” opens and warns the wearer of obstacles in their path with a buzzer. Paeng believes humans are evolving into “phono sapiens,” developing “turtle neck syndrome” and a curved pinky finger from holding our phones. “I hope that the act of ironically pointing out what we are doing with our smartphones can help people take time for self-reflection,” Paeng mused.

Sorry, Josh, but you’ve missed your chance to become the ultimate Josh — that distinction has gone to Josh Vinson Jr., who won a paper Burger King crown, a champion’s belt and a tiny trophy at the #JoshFight in Lincoln, Nebraska, on April 24. Josh Swain, 22, a student from Tucson, Arizona, conceived the viral event, which started with an epic Rock Paper Scissors battle and included pool noodles. Swain was apparently unprepared for the turnout: “I did not expect people to be as adamant about this as they are right now,” he told KLKN-TV. Segal Events raising money for cancer
P
hilip Segal III was a hometown boy who made good. He was a graduate of Grimsley High School and N.C. State University. He Jim Longworth was an avid sports fan with a particular love for ice hockey. Longworth Segal was also the at Large founder of Havana Phil’s Cigar Company in Greensboro, where today, patrons can purchase and enjoy the finest smokes from around the world. Phil was well known and well liked, and he left us way too soon. Segal died in 2018 at the age of 60 from stomach cancer. Since Phil’s passing, his wife Kimberley and son, Philip IV, have taken over the business, but they have also dedicated themselves to educating folks about stomach cancer and fighting to find
a cure. The forum they chose for their mission is an annual fundraising golf tournament, but the popular event was put on hold last year due to the COVID pandemic. Now, thanks to recent rulings by Governor Cooper and the CDC, the Philip Segal III Memorial Golf Tournament is back in full swing, and participants will tee off on Thursday, June 10 at Grandover Resort. Proceeds from the golf tournament will benefit Debbie’s Dream Foundation, an organization dedicated to raising awareness about stomach cancer, advancing funding for research, providing education and support to patients, families and caregivers, and, ultimately, finding a cure for the disease. “It was important to me and my son to choose an organization that supports stomach cancer research,” said Kimberley Segal. “It also means a lot to us that Debbie’s Dream Foundation works closely with caregivers and supports families who are dealing with stomach cancer.” This year’s fundraiser has been expanded to include two other events. A cigar party along with silent and live
auctions will be held on the evening of the golf tournament, and a charity icehockey game will take place on Saturday, June 12. “The auctions will feature lots of sports memorabilia, including items from Dad’s beloved N.C. State University, as well as from his favorite sport, ice hockey,” said Phil Segal IV. “That ties into our other big event on June 12, when folks can come out and play a game of ice hockey at the Icehouse.” In addition to raising money for Debbie’s Dream Foundation, one of the events will also benefit a long-time employee and friend of Segal III. “The live auction will raise money for a man known affectionately as Big Ed, who was one of my Dad’s dearest friends and a loyal employee. Big Ed is in need of a kidney transplant, and we want to help
any way we can,” said Phil Segal IV. Check-in for the golf tournament on June 10 is 6:30 a.m., with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The entry fee is $150 per player and $600 for a foursome. Companies and individuals can also purchase sponsorships ranging from $150 to $2,500. All sponsorships include golf, lunch, prizes, and admission to the cigar party and auctions. Face-off for the hockey game on June 12 is 4 p.m. at the Icehouse in Greensboro. To register for a round of golf, purchase a golf sponsorship, or purchase tickets to the auction, visit www.debbiesdream.org and click-on, “Events.” To play in the ice hockey game, email pcookk@aol.com. ! JIM LONGWORTH is the host of Triad Today, airing on Saturdays at 7:30 a.m. on ABC45 (cable channel 7) and Sundays at 11 a.m. on WMYV (cable channel 15).

The kids are all right in Us Kids
T
he worst school shooting in American history occurred on Valentine’s Day 2018 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in ParkMark Burger land, FL, in which 17 people were Contributor killed and another 17 injured. To quote Franklin Roosevelt, it was a day that will live in infamy – and, not surprisingly, it sparked a worldwide media frenzy and a firestorm of controversy. In the aftermath, four students who survived that day – Samantha Fuentes, Emma Gonzalez, David Hogg, and Cameron Kasky – took it upon themselves to become tireless advocates for gun control, speaking out for stricter gun laws. Producer/director Kim A. Snider’s worthy documentary feature, Us Kids, zeroes in on their lives and their advocacy and how that has shaped their lives. In the midst of coping with the tragedy, trying
WWW.YESWEEKLY.COM
to graduate high school, and simply being normal teenagers, they channeled their passion into the March for Our Lives protest in Washington, D.C., then went on a nationwide tour to further get the word out. The sheer personalities of Fuentes, Gonzales, Hogg, and Kasky are showcased here, and each of them shines. They’ve each become more comfortable in the glare of the spotlight, yet they feel a vague sense of unease that they are, in a way, considered celebrities. They’re not pushing themselves; they’re pushing their message. They’re doing something they feel is important and right – and that in itself is laudable. Snider’s camera is ever-present but not intrusive. These are, after all, teenagers. They’re allowed their privacy. A few discuss personal relationships, others stick to the issue at hand. It’s difficult to get a true sense of what they went through, but we certainly get a sense of who they are and how that event shaped their collective and individual futures. It’s also refreshing – and a relief – to see them occasionally laugh and have fun. In this age of rampant social media and hair-trigger politics, each has had to deal with negative feedback, including very public criticism of Hogg by Georgia representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, among others. Yet, this too brought further attention to their cause. In a remarkable scene, Hogg debates some gun-toting protestors in which both sides express their opinions in a calm, respectful fashion. Us Kids tries hard not to specifically demonize the kids’ opposition, assuming that the viewer is familiar enough with the issue and those who oppose them. It’s a delicate, sometimes shaky balance, and although the film is occasionally high-minded, it doesn’t detract from its overall effectiveness. There’s scarcely a mention of the shooter’s name (Nikolas Cruz) and only a few scenes involving parents, but the title is Us Kids, and the focus – cor-
rectly – is entirely on them and where they are now in their lives. It’s their story, and it’s a relevant and important one. The end credits indicate that the highest level of youth voting occurred in the 2020 election, which was followed in January by the announcement that the NRA (National Rifle Association) has filed for bankruptcy. Evidently, someone’s listening to what Us Kids has
to say. One could say it even makes for something akin to a happy ending or, at the very least, a hopeful one. – Us Kids is available on video on demand and will be released June 15 on DVD ($19.95 retail) by Greenwich Entertainment/Kino Lorber. ! elcome to the Triad’s Best issue! It’s our biggest issue of the year by a long shot, something only possible thanks to our dedicated readers who went out and cast nearly 118,000 whopping votes divvied up between a plethora of categories. Some votes came from as far as Europe, Asia, and even all the way from Australia, which just goes to show just how diverse and deep the roots are that run beneath us. We couldn’t be more fortunate to have such a rallying crowd at our back and as such we can only humbly say “Thank you.” We know the past year has been a torrential

downpour of all types of issues and shortcomings, so it means all the more to us that we’re able to offer a moment of respite as we wade through this storm. Unfortunately some of the businesses and groups that you voted for are no longer intact, so in those cases we hope that this may serve as an epitaph for them and a reminder to us of the tribulations we’ve faced. The strength and resilience shown by the people and businesses throughout this maelstrom will forever be a monument to their tenacity now that clearer skies finally seem to be on the horizon. But enough of all that! We know what you’re here for and we worked hard to make it happen.

A/perture Cinema
Best
sedgefield country club
Best movie theater in Forsyth county It makes since that a/perture cinema would win YES! Weekly’s Triad’s Best award for Best Movie Theater in Forsyth County. All we have to do is roll their credits for proof. The theatre has just finished celebrating its 10th anniversary in Downtown Winston-Salem. They have screened more than 175 films and special events annually with more than 4,000 screenings and an average 41,000 admissions per year. a/ perture is the only dedicated year-round art house cinema in the Piedmont Triad. The theater’s one goal is to entertain and engage the community through the art of film by showcasing informative, educational, thought-provoking, and inspiring films—the films that enrich our lives, engage our minds, promote diversity, and build community.
Annually, a/perture screens first-run films that include award winners from all the major international film festivals, major foreign releases from around the world, significant documentary films and numerous other critically acclaimed films. The majority of these films are not screened anywhere else in the community and many would not be seen by local audiences if not for our programming. Whenever possible, a/perture augments first-run film programming with post film discussions and dialogues, community moderated panels, and filmmaker and guest artist visits. As an intimate and welcoming communal space, a/perture is constantly building social capital through our films and opportunities for conversation.

Triad's best sports/team We can see why Winston-Salem would knock it out the park when it comes to taking home the awards for Triad’s Best Sports/Team. This is one team that is all about their fans! From T-shirt and ice cream giveaways to set upping fro Strike Out COVID vaccination events, this is one franchise that is all about serving the community it is in. Last year’s pivot didn’t stop the Winston-Salem Dash from interacting with its fan base. In addition to the Dash’s 70-game regular-season schedule, the facility annually hosts over 200 events, including movie nights, weddings, and proms, truly making it an entertainment destination for the entire community. While the organization

has a history of being embedded in the community, last year’s pandemic forced them to take it up a notch. “We very quickly pivoted to taking our game days out into the community,” said Winston-Salem Dash President C.J. Johnson. “Financially, it was a challenge, but I’m grateful for the community that we have and the tremendous support that we saw from our staff, community, and fans. I’m excited to get back to providing fun for our community again.” They also rented out suites at the stadium for office space, which included parking, wifi, coffee, water, and a Dash mask. The Dash mascot, Bolt, could also be scheduled to “crash” Zoom meetings.

Bull City Ciderworks Best new club/Bar in Guilford county Bull City Ciderworks has grabbed the Triads Best’s Best New Club/Bar in Guilford County award by the horns. Bull City Ciderworks (BCC) opened its Greensboro location in January 2021 in the former Gibb’s Hundred Brewing building located at 504 State Street. In addition to serving its lineup of award winning ciders, the taproom offers craft beer and non-alcoholic options. The taproom will be family and pet friendly and will feature expanded year-round outdoor seating. Food trucks will also be available at the Cidery. “It’s an exciting opportunity for us to find a location in Greensboro. Greensboro has been an important location for distribution for us for several years and we have been searching for a suitable retail location for over a year,” said John Clowney, CEO of BCC in a press release
announcing it’s grand opening. BCC began in Durham in 2014 before expanding to Lexington in 2016. It’s considered the Research Triangle’s first owned and operated cidery and one of the largest cideries in the Southeastern United States. BCC produces a full range of award winning natural, fruited and barrel aged ciders that are distributed in package and draft formats across North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. “We are very excited to bring some new energy to the craft beverage scene in Greensboro and have already started reaching out to other businesses and organizations in the area to partner with as we prepare to commence operations,” Clowney said. “Our brand has a strong commitment to community in both of our existing locations and our commitment to Greensboro will be no different.”

Best Barbecue Restaurant in Guilford county The Black Powder Smokehouse is on fire as YES! Weekly’s Triad’s Best Barbecue Restaurant in Guilford County. Although a young restaurant, opening in 2019, the Jamestown based business has not only beat back the impact of COVID-19 but won the hearts of readers as well. Housed in the old gas station at 302 E. Main St. at the Guilford Road Intersection and run by Keith Henning and Ryan Herring, partners in the venture, the artisan barbecue offers patrons a true “smoked” barbecue experience. “Black Powder Smokehouse is a no-frills barbecue smokehouse focused on serving delicious food,” Henning said in a previous article. “The biggest difference in our restaurant is our smoker. We use wood … period. There’s no gas,

VOTED THE TRIAD’S BEST BICYCLE STORE
mOtOrCYCle dealership
smOkin’ harleY-davidsOn
Bicycle Toy and Hobby was started in 1927 on Wrenn Street in downtown High Point by Jesse Jennings. In the 1940's Jesse moved the store to 504 N. Main Street. Over the years the store moved away from Toys and Hobbies and focused more on bicycles. In the early 1970's Jesse's son Danny and wife, Dolly, took over the family business. In 1986 Danny and Dolly moved the store to the present location at 2000 North Main Street. Today third generation sons Dale and Derric work in the store. Many days you will find fourth generation, Alexander Jennings, working in the store. So please come check out North Carolina's oldest family bicycle store.

VOTED BEST PET BOARDING
Winston-Salem Theatre Alliance has taken top billing in YES! Weekly’s Triad’s Best awards for the Best Live Theater Venue in Forsyth County. Earlier this year, the Alliance was preparing to move into its new home in the Arts District at 650 W. Sixth Street, formerly home to the Bluebird Cab Company. The newly renovated site is expected to include a 160-seat theater, a larger lobby and box office for customers, a backstage area, and prop and costume shops. There will be a dedicated space for set construction and an all-in-one comprehensive space, as well. Since it began its “Homecoming” Capital Campaign in the fall of 2019, the goal grew to $1.5 million needed to realize the dream of a new theatre.
Despite COVID-19, they were able to come up with the bulk of the campaign monies, including the most recent gift of $25,000 from the Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. While they’d already purchased the W. Sixth Street building, they still need $750,000 to finish the renovations and complete the transformation by the deadline of May 2021. The Legacy Venue, a long-term rental the theatre acquired in 2008, had already been renovated from an 88-seat house to a 120-seat house. “Even while we stopped performing, our renovation kept going. I’m also excited to move to this side of town because it’s officially part of the Downtown Arts District. It’s kind of a dream come true for us,” Executive Director Jaime Lawson.

Connecting dots and celebrating music communities in the 2021 Triad’s Best Awards
W
ithin the Triad, music communities work as avenues of connection between themselves and fans. And to honor the winners of the 2021 YES! Weekly Triad’s Katei Cranford Best reader poll for music, we connect the dots, highlighting Contributor and celebrating the close connections and communities we share. Celebrating community is tops for the folks behind Skullfest, who won “Best Live Triad Music Show of 2020” for their annual metal and rock celebration at the Skull Lounge in Randleman. Hosted by Skulls and Whiskey (who placed second for “Best Tribute / Cover Band,”) the lineup also included Desired Redemption—winners of “Best Local Original Band”—which features drummer Jesse Mabe (runner-up for “Best Percussionist,”) and singer Denise “Dee” Masters (runner-up for “Best Vocalist.).” For Masters, “Skullfest is like a family reunion,” she said. “It’s a festival of bands who have played together and helped each other out all year long, and that’s how we get together and celebrate.” Beginning as a small Labor Day gathering in 2015, Skullfest quickly grew into an annual event, bringing national touring acts like Nashville Pussy to the small DIY spot affectionately known as “the Skull Lounge.” Skullfest organizer, JC “The
Skulls and Whiskey
Hammer” Casey, considers it a pleasure to host—and perform, as frontman of Skulls and Whiskey, the resident band around which Skullfest revolves. “The Skull Lounge is the Heart of Skulls and Whiskey,” Casey said, “it’s home.” Fully equipped with all the gear for a show, the group pushed forward with Skullfest 2020 a bit later in the year, once pandemic restrictions eased in November. “We had extra preparations, including masks and hand sanitizers, as well as temperature checks and a symptom questionnaire,” he explained of the precautions taken to ensure a safe and successful time. As a group, Skulls and Whiskey pays tribute to Viking Skull, a hard-hitting English metal band, while also channeling heavy-metal classics from the likes of Black Sabbath, AC/DC, and Motorhead. “We try to write songs that are driving,
groovy, and all about having fun,” Casey said of their original material. “We’ve developed our sound by aiming to be as loud as possible without sacrificing quality,” he added, acknowledging the talent of their soundman and “unofficial 6th band member,” Wayne, who Casey considers essential for “crafting a sound that is loud and powerful, but also crisp and clear.” Plans are currently underway for Skullfest 2021 on Sept. 18. “We try to make Skullfest bigger and better for the fans and the bands,” Casey said, “We love to play and want our fans to have as much fun at our shows as we do.” The pursuit for fun for fans is a sentiment shared by lounge-lady and DJ, Jessica Mashburn who snagged runner-up for both “Best Vocalist” and “Best Piano Player,” while her Print Works Bistro residency with AM rOdeO (her duo with Evan
AM rOdeO
James Vincent Caroll
Olson) placed runner-up for “Best Live Triad Music Show.” “Making music in the Triad for this community is where our heart is!” Mashburn said with thanks to fans and voters. “We miss our weekly shows and all our regulars so much,” she added of their Wednesday “Mussels, wine and music” nights at Print Works, which she hopes will return toward the end of summer. The pair celebrated the 10-years of their Print Works residency with an online show, and they’re looking forward to a live return. “I started playing some small private events as a solo artist a few weeks ago,” Mashburn said. “It felt so good to be back at it. We’re not sure how we survived this year, but we are so glad we made it.” While artists fashioned ways of surviving the shutdown, agencies like Triad Musicians Matter, founded by “Best Songwriter” Kristy Jackson, worked to provide relief. Even before the pandemic, TMM offered assistance to Triad musicians in the face of illness, injury, or displacement. “In many cases, it’s the musicians who are the first to offer their time and talents to help raise funds for many worthy local and global causes,” Jackson said about the organization, “it’s our purpose to be a vehicle to which the community can give back.” Fundraising often comes from benefit shows, with lineups that have included AM rOdeO, as well as appearances from acts like Brice Street, which features Doug Dennis (runner-up for “Best Bassist,”) who also plays in Smitty and the JumpStarters with drummer Roy Brown (second-place “Best Percussionist.”) The JumpStarters

often perform at Walker’s Bar (runnerup for “Most Unique Place to Hear Live Music,”) with their next show being at the Sawmill II on June 18. One particular TMM benefit featured a reunion from the early-80s Tate Street kings, Tornado, of which Sam Frazier (second-place for “Best Guitarist”) was a member. Frazier, who currently heads Sam Frazier and the Side Effects, kept his response simple, bestowing gratitude toward voters, and praising Doodad Farm, where he’s scheduled to play on July 24. “Doodad Farm is an outstanding place to experience music!” he said. Frazier is hardly the sole Doodad fan. Situated on a farm a few miles from downtown Greensboro, Doodad Farm received runner-up for “Best Music Venue in Guilford County” and has hosted the likes of Bruce Piephoff (runner-up” Best Songwriter,”) and Crystal Bright (secondplace winner for “Best Piano Player.”) The fandom is mutual for Doodad operator Dean Driver. “When we started Doodad Farm in 2011, we said we’d avoid having the same bands appear year after year, but we make an exception for Sam Frazier,” Driver said,” he brings in such an appreciative and enthusiastic crowd and is the first to raise his hand to help with fundraiser concerts. And, let’s face it — the guy always rocks the farm.” And as live events return, Doodad is looking forward to getting a little rocked. “We’re slowly waking up after the pandemic,” Driver noted of their upcoming calendar, which includes the return of the monthly “Last Thursday Songwriters’ Circle” on May 27 and a tribute and memorial to songwriter Mike Gaffney on May 30. “I think people recognize what we’re doing here as soon as they arrive,” Driver mused on their award while thanking patrons. “We simply seek to provide a non-commercial space for musicians to connect with audiences. minutes from downtown, but you feel like you’re in another world. And as a grassroots, volunteer-run, nonprofit venue, it’s a great honor to be recognized in this way.” Doodad hopes to likewise honor the community through their events, including the return of Groove Jam, which serves as a fundraiser for the Greensboro Urban Ministry. Headed by Rich Lerner and The Groove, (which features Craig Pannell, who won second-place for “Best Bassist,”) Groove Jam X is scheduled for Sept. 25. Seth Williams played Groove Jam VIII with his group Whiskey Foxtrot; as a solo artist, he’s scheduled for June 3 at the Ramkat, winner of “Best Venue in Forsyth County.” The Winston club recently celebrated their reopening with the
Vagabond Saints Society performing Tom Petty’s “Damn the Torpedoes,” over two sold-out shows. The VSS presentation of Pink Floyd’s The Wall placed runner-up for “Best Live Triad Music Show of 2020,” and they’ll be back at the Ramkat, doing the Rolling Stones, on June 18th. Looking to uphold their title at the top, the Ramkat is quickly filling their calendar, with Graham Sharp (of Steep Canyon Rangers) scheduled for May 27; and their “Summer Music Shindig” outdoor concert series starting with the Steel Drivers on June 4, followed by Chatham County Line on June 11. Likewise, an extensive summer schedule is on the books for Big Something (runnerup for “Best Original Band”), slated for major festivals across the country. The group spent most of 2020 playing regular live streams, with a notable live show during the inaugural season of The Drive at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds (runnerup for “Best Venue in Forsyth County.) The Drive is also doing big things, hosting an evening with Tedeschi Trucks on June 22, and screening a free movie night, sponsored by The Parenting PATH on June 6, with a laser light show on June 24. Brothers Pearl, who’s known for their Allman Brothers covers, got runner-up for “Best Tribute / Cover Band” and came in second place for “Best Live Triad Music Show” for an appearance at Gypsy-Road Brewing Company. The Kernersville spot also won “Most Unique Place to Hear Live Music” and got second place for “Best Music Venue in Forsyth County.” A Gypsy-Road regular, James Vincent
Carroll (runner-up for “Best Musician”), has upcoming brewery shows on May 26, June 30, July 28, and Aug 25. Meanwhile, Spindle 45 once again swept the Triad’s Best, with members picking up awards in seven categories, including “Best Tribute/ Cover Band,” “Best Bassist,” “Best Guitarist,” and “Best Percussionist.” Powerhouse, Laurie Alley, won “Best Piano Player” and placed second for both “Best Musician” and “Best Vocalist.” “It’s humbling to be included on that list,” Alley said, “there are so many quality musicians in the Triad, and it’s an incredibly supportive music community.” Reflecting on her multiple awards, “I’m grateful for parents that encouraged me to explore the arts, starting with piano lessons in Kindergarten, then to voice and clarinet/saxophone lessons as a teenager,” she explained,” three of the instruments that I play (tenor sax, alto sax, and clarinet) belonged to my grandfather who was a professional musician in Hawaii; every time I play them, I feel a little closer to him.” Beyond her family, Alley expressed gratitude for her fans and bandmates. “I’m so thankful for the opportunity to share the stage with my talented bandmates in Spindle 45, and we’re so excited to be playing out again,” she said. “The pandemic threw us a curve, but we were able to extend our reach online, adding over six thousand Facebook followers from as far away as Finland, Canada, and the Philippines. We love receiving messages from our new friends across the globe.” Looking to spin a few new fans, Spindle 45 has dates at Old Nick’s Pub Arcadia on May 29, at Bull’s Tavern (runner-up for “Best Music Venue in Forsyth County”) on June 4, at the Deck (“Best Music Venue in Guilford County” and runner-up for “Most Unique Place to Hear Live Music”) on June 13, and at Rizzo’s (runner-up Best Music Venue in Forsyth County”) on July 17. Over in Greensboro, the Flat Iron (who won “Coolest Small Bar,” came in second place for “Best Music Venue in Guilford County,” and got runner-up for “Most Intimate Music Venue,”) has been getting back in the swing with “Offbeat Tuesday” vinyl nights hosted by Prez. Their next show will feature Charlie Hunter (who also plays in the Sam Fribush Organ Trio with Fribush, runner-up for “Best Piano Player”) and Brevan Hampden on June 1. Throughout the Triad, musicians and artists continue creating communities and connections worth celebrating. Congrats! ! Supporting Foster Care Awareness Month is as easy as buying a bag of Greensboro coffee
E
BY JESSICA CLIFFORD
ven on those rainy days, a local collaboration is giving people the chance to add some sunshine to their morning coffee tradition while supporting foster care and adoption. As part of a fundraising campaign, Children’s Home Society of North Carolina, Inc., a full-spectrum foster care and adoption nonprofit, teamed up with the Green Bean, a longtime downtown Greensboro coffee shop, to develop a new coffee roast named “Sunshine.” The coffee campaign was strategically launched at the beginning of May because it is Foster Care Awareness Month, according to Stephany McMillan, the corporate philanthropy specialist for the Children’s Home Society’s Greensboro office. According to McMillan, the organization is “really about family preservation.” Over its nearly 120-year history, the Children’s Home Society has placed more than 16,000 children with permanent families. In addition to adoption and foster care services, the nonprofit offers programs to help families by educating parents, empowering youth, caregiver support, and family preservation. The Children’s Home Society was excited to team up with the Green Bean. Similar to the goals of the nonprofit, McMillan said, “we love that the Green Bean is all about the community.” According to McMillan, the Children’s Home Society is always looking for unique connections with community organizations, businesses, and individuals that believe in their mission. Prior to this formal collaboration, McMillan said many staff members of Children’s Home Society would frequent the Green Bean, which opened in 2002, and already had a connection with the shop. “Serving and educating guests on the art and craft of impeccable coffee is only a small part of what we do. What we really do is build community!” said current Green Bean owner Amy Foresman in a press release on the new coffee. “We use coffee and hospitality as tools to create space for people that invites people in,” Foresman said. “Space for people to collaborate, converse and make authentic connections that are enjoyYES! able and expand our community and understanding of the world around us. Community is the family you choose. This is our community.” The coffee was named in honor of Sunshine, who was the first infant taken into care by the Children’s Home Society in 1906. The infant was named Sunshine because of the warmth and charm her
smile brought to others. The coffee offers the characteristics of Sunshine, using Columbian and Brazilian beans for a medium-dark roast and a sunrise coffee blend that delivers a balance of sweetness, with hints of apricot, toasted pecan, and milk chocolate. “Hopefully, this blend energizes people,” McMillan said not only about
the coffee itself but about helping children achieve access to their dream of foster care and adoption. According to McMillan, she would meet weekly with the owner of the Green Bean during the campaign’s early stage. They were thinking about the name of the coffee and a bag design that blended the nonprofit and small business goals. McMillan said they wanted to bring in a local artist and settled on Gina Franco because her work “resonated” with them. “I knew little about CHS prior to this project, and once I learned more about them, I knew I wanted to do what I could to help spread their message and bring more attention to the work they do,” Franco said. “Being able to create art and make a difference is always a win-win for me. I also love Amy and the Green Bean!” Franco is a North Carolina-based muralist, with work featured across the state, especially in businesses and organizations in Greensboro and on the Beltline in Atlanta. She has completed some collaborative projects beforehand, including her recent work with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to create artwork for their digital certificates. “After she agreed, we were over the moon,” McMillan. The art on the coffee bag includes colorful drawings in pastel pinks, yellows, blues, and purples of smiling suns, hearts, flowers, a coffee cup, a young girl, a rainbow, and a child’s hand. “I feel like the whole group was inspired by the story of Sunshine, so I knew early on the name of the coffee. I wanted to capture her spirit as well as reflect the values of CHS,” Franco said. The Green Bean is donating five percent of the proceeds to the Children’s Home Society. According to McMillan, the money will holistically fund the nonprofit by going toward whichever program is in need. The coffee bags are available for purchase at the Green Bean coffee shop or online at www.chsnc.org/sunshine. A bag of coffee is $15.50. The coffee is only sold in bags and not for one-time to-go orders at the shop. The Sunshine bags of coffee will be available through the summer. !

RiverRun festival back in a big way The 22nd annual RiverRun International Film Festival didn’t happen last year. The 23rd festival, which concluded May 16th, did happen this year – and it went off without a hitch. Mark Burger This year’s festival, which combined virtual screenContributor ings with socially distanced outdoor and drive-in screenings, boasted 134 films representing 24 different countries. Almost 3,500 tickets were sold during this year’s festival, which includes one ticket for each car at a drivein screening and one ticket for each virtual presentation. Obviously, there were often additional people in each vehicle, and it’s impossible to ascertain how many people watched a virtual screening on one ticket. Therefore, said RiverRun executive director Rob Davis, “this is a festival different from any other, but our attendance was very good and actually exceeded our expectations in terms of geographic reach.” The festival saw virtual sales in 33 states as far away as Hawaii, British Columbia, and Ontario in Canada, Puerto Rico, Spain, Switzerland, Israel, and the United Kingdom. It could accurately be said that this was the most “far-reaching” festival in RiverRun’s history. “It has been a treat for us to see that RiverRun had such a far reach this year – across the country and beyond,” Davis said. “As always, we are grateful to everyone who makes this festival happen and to all of those who support our mission.” In addition, “we have had a great deal of positive feedback from audience members as well as filmmakers,” he said. “By the time of (this year’s) festival, audiences were used to streaming content and purchasing tickets online, so the comments have largely centered on how convenient everything was. Additionally, we provided a great deal of documentation on how to access tickets and films, and I’ve personally received many positive comments on how thorough our instructions were and how much that was appreciated.” Despite having presented some virtual and drive-in screenings in lieu of the festival last year, any concerns that the RiverRun staff and volunteers might be a little rusty this year were quickly dispelled, WWW.YESWEEKLY.COM

according to Davis. “The RiverRun team has adapted, adjusted, and revised our business model over the course of the last year, and we were all back in the ‘groove’ come opening night!” The winners of the 2021 RiverRun jury awards were announced at the close of the festival, with Best Film going to Fires in the Dark and the Peter Brunette Award for Best Director to Dominique Lienhard for that film. Lienhard turned the hat trick by also winning the Best Screenplay Award. Philippe Kress (Best Cinematography) and Marco Perez (Best Editing) won for A Beautiful Curse, Shein Mompremier won Best Actress for Ludi, and Best Ensemble went to the cast of Events Transpiring Before, During, and After a High-School Basketball Game. Sapelo, directed by Nick Brandestini, won Best Documentary Feature, Jeff Daniels (not the actor) won Best Director of a Documentary Feature for Television Event, and the Human Rights Award went to Missing in Brooks County. White Eye, directed by Tomer Shushan, won Best Narrative Short, and The Washing Machine, directed by Tomer Shushan, won Best Student Narrative Short. Must Love Pie, directed by Patrick Clement, earned an honorable mention for Student Narrative Short.

The RiverRun festival is an Academy Award qualifying festival for Best Documentary Short, and this year’s Best Documentary Short was won by director Jimmy Goldblum’s A Broken House, while Atomic Café, co-directed by Akira Boch and Tadashi Nakamura, received an honorable mention. RiverRun is also an Academy qualifying festival for Best Animated Short, and this year’s winner was The Source of the Mountains, while The Winter copped a special jury award for Student Film. The Reel South Award went to director Lydia Cornett’s Bug Farm. The 10th annual RiverRun Pitch Fest saw college students from six colleges in North Carolina and Virginia pitching their potential documentary film projects to a panel of judges in hopes of receiving cash prizes. America vs. Herself, directed by Kiersten House (UNC Wilmington), won first place, and The Subway, directed by Gannon La Croix (James Madison University), won second place. Another winner was actress-turnedwriter/producer Finnerty Steeves, whose comedy/drama before/during/after was to have had its world premiere at last year’s festival. When the festival was canceled, RiverRun arranged for a special outdoor screening at the Marketplace Cinemas Drive-In in August. This year she
brought the film back to be shown at RED Cinemas in Greensboro, where she was also presented with the Emerging Master Award. “I had an incredible time,” Steeves said. “The staff and volunteers at RiverRun are the best – the best. The screenings were well-attended, and I feel like everyone was so dang happy to be having a shared experience with other people. It made the viewing all the more special. I sat there with my husband and daughter and just took it all in: All of the giggles. All of the love. All of it.” “I think next year’s festival will retain some sort of virtual component as it provides great exposure for the RiverRun brand, even though more of next year’s festival will hopefully be in-person,” Davis said. “We were just so grateful to be able to be back in a creative fashion. Thank you to everyone who was a part of this year – from filmmakers and directors to patrons and staff. Being a part of this community is such a gift to RiverRun.” The official RiverRun website is: https:// riverrunfilm.com/. ! LOOT ACTUALLY
I’m envious of a friend whose boyfriend frequently does nice things for her: bringing her soup when she’s sick and surprising her with a weekend getaway and Amy Alkon a pricey handbag she’d been coveting. Advice My boyfriend is a nice, reliable, loving Goddess guy. I’d considered myself lucky to have him, but now I’m worried my “good-boyfriend” standard is too low. —Comparison Shopping A woman feels loved when the man she’s with does those little things that say “thinking of you” — as opposed to “spent all day forgetting I had a girlfriend.” Not surprisingly, you envy your girlfriend who gets those little (and bigger) signs. Envy gets a bum rap as a toxic emotion. (It can have toxic effects when the envious try to even things out by sabotaging those doing better.) However, evolutionary social psychologist Bram Buunk’s research suggests envy is actually “adaptive”: functional — a sort of alarm clock for yearning and ambition, alerting us to others’ higher achievements (or groovier stuff) and motivating us to nab the same (or more) for ourselves. Men are not cryptographers, and they are particularly bad at translating women’s nonverbal signals like pouting — if they notice them at all. Tell your boyfriend what you want — sweetly,
WWW.YESWEEKLY.COM
not scoldingly — in the context of “what would make me really happy.” Chances are you’ll need to tell him a few times to get him to come around. When he does, reinforce future come-arounds by telling him how happy he’s made you, how much it means to you. (Doing this while tearing off his clothes, if you’re so inspired, should make an even stronger impression.) But say, even with reminders, your boyfriend drops by with soup or a latte just once and then forgets the whole deal. Sure, you could put him out with the recycling for some woman with lower “good-boyfriend standards” to pick up. However, you might reflect on ways he shows he cares: maybe giving you his coat when you’re cold or fixing your car so you won’t die in a fiery wreck. You might also consider that some men’s apparent generosity reflects not love but the sense they’re out of their league. If that’s the case with your friend’s boyfriend, the stream of soup, swag, and trips is just a campaign to delight-slash-distract her from dumping him — a la, “Never put off till tomorrow goods-and-services-izing what could be in some other dude’s arms two Thursdays from now!”
Ideally, if a man wears “statement jewelry,” the statement it’s making isn’t: “I’m in constant communication with my parole officer.” A guy who embezzles money — assuming there’s no “my brain tumor made me do it!” — is likely low on the personality trait of conscientiousness. Someone high in conscientiousness is disciplined, dependable, organized, and shows concern for others’ needs and feelings. In contrast, those short on conscientiousness are unreliable, careless, impulsive, and poor at delaying gratification. (They probably see little reason to do it, as they also have an “eh, whatevs!” attitude about their effect on others.) Personality traits tend to be pretty stable over time and in various situations — though research by psychologists Nathan Hudson and R. Chris Fraley suggests people can work to change their personality by repeatedly changing their typical behavior. For example, a usually inconsiderate guy could act like a person high in conscientiousness, starting in small ways, like making the bed every morning instead of leaving it for the girlfriend-slash-housekeeper to do. That
said, lasting change might not be possible without strong motivation to mend one’s ways — like feeling deep remorse at all the people one hurt. (Remorse at getting caught doesn’t count!) This guy’s “it was just white collar!” is not exactly dripping with contrition. You could get him on the phone before your date to probe further into what he did and his current perspective on it. Is he passionate about turning over a new leaf, driven to be honest — or just to seem honest? As for your “chemistry!” argument for seeing him again, consider that you get the whole dude, not just the hot parts. Wanting to see the best in somebody doesn’t make the worst in them disappear. It just might be a while before you arrive home early and spot it — in bed with your best friend, your sister, and the UPS lady. ! GOT A PROBLEM? WEEKEND AT BERNIE MADOFF’S
I had a nice first-date dinner with a guy I met on a dating app. Afterward, he said he had something to show me, pulled up his pant leg, and revealed an ankle monitor! He said he hadn’t wanted to put it on his dating profile and “it was just white-collar.” (I Googled. Embezzling money. He’s on “supervised release” — apparently with some range beyond house arrest.) This situation bothered me, but I accepted his invitation for a second date, given our chemistry. —Shocked
