PROTOTYPING HYBRID EDUCATION HOUSING Affordable Campus Comunity For LaGuardia High School,NY. Group Work: Ying Fan & Wenxin Feng Instructor: Mona El Khafif 2019.9-2019.12

Historically, Manhattan has gone from a low FAR row housing era to enter the era of high FAR skyscrapers. As the era progresses, the dense population has led to increasing demand for composite buildings. The project focuses on Site of LaGuardia High School. We hope to maintain high FAR capacity requirements. Give priority to meeting the dual needs of locals for education and life and also bring back the living style that once belonged to the row house era in New York. For me, this is an attempt to explore the meaning of architecture. I believe that to modern people, architectural space is one of the carriers of long lasting memory over generations. It is the stage where the story takes place, and it is the key connecting the past and the future. As a project for the first semester of M-arch students, it is also a very interesting exercise dabbles in Typology training, Spacial Calculation as many architecture skills.



Spatial algorithm: Set 6 basic forms (these forms are based on urban textures extracted from historical maps ) and 6 Reverse topology of their 3D shapes. Take these 12 forms as the "original gene", Combine in pairs, 144 new forms can be obtained as the "Progeny gene pool"This will be the library of our architectural typology.

Among these types, we have chosen one that is suitable for FAR>7 (this is one of our course requirements), and at the same time has nearly half of the block area of public ground space and high-density affordable housing. For affordable housing, we also extract from historical buildings: we retain the New York characteristic row house model to ensure that each unit can have its own front garden and backgarden. This is our high level of satisfaction for affordable housing—— an attempt at FAR and life experience.

Archives are places where we store stories This archive 7020 is for stories happened in L.A. for stories that forged into movies for stories that circulate in Hollywood for stories that cast its image in Sunset Boulevard Archives are places where we store stories and from archives we reconstruct the stories using space as medium, dialog can happen between stories recorded in film and stories that will be inking into our memories Using space as medium, interaction may happen between the scene of the city L.A. and the scene in your eyes.

This project rethinks the future of the department store as a physical space that can add value to Amazon`s already established membershipe co n o m y , e s t a b l i s h t h e fo r m a l lo rd & t a y lo r department store into a new facility for programs that gonna require physical spaces. a strategy that can better aline with the physical-service commercial with the existing digital platform. Amazon replaced the department store as a trusted plat, for transactions between vendors and customers, but eliminated the physical space. Today amazon need to gain by adding services that can only happen in physical space to be able to enhance membership economy. This requires the space undertakes the attributes of “display” from the department store while using physical space for service activities adapting to the need of membership costumers. In this particular case—— New Yorkers in the 21st century

PROTOTYPING HYBRID INFRASTRUCTURES NETWORKED FLOOD MITIGATION FOR NORFOLK, VA Group Work: Ying Fan & Luis Medina Instructor: Mona El Khafif & Darcy Engle 2021.2-2021.5

Historically, gray, green and blue infrastructure networks have been engineered to serve a single purpose and operate independently. A street drains the water on the street, a park sucks the water out of the park, and waterfronts are seen as shorelines rather than multi-level tidal flooding prevention sites. T h is is a prevale n t re al it y in No rfo l k w h e re gray infrastructure is treated as a priority over n o n - ve h i c u l a r t ra n s i t , g re e n i n f ra st r u c t u re is typically inaccessible to the general public and blue infrastructure is nearly nonexistent. This project proposes a stratified network of waterresilient systems made of hybrid infrastructural composites that act and react to transitional flooding events.


Background Norfolk is not a very "healthy city"-the most obvious symptom is flooding, but the reason behind the symptoms is that the city faces many threats. After research, we summarized two sources of floods: Stagnant water caused by the imbalance of drainage and precipitation, and Tidal flood caused by sea-level rise and land sinking. Aquifer compaction may cause uneven settlement and cracking of the ground, and seawater intrusion may cause soil salinization.The sea level rise caused by climate is force majeure, but the overpavement situation of the city can be changed. Backfilling the aquifer layer with relatively clean water and improving the urban water supply and drainage system may be the survival mode of seaside cities in the future。
