Barley Hall
MAP REF 1 g b E
2 Coffee Yard, Off Stonegate, York, North Yorkshire, YO1 8AR Tel: 01904 610275 www.barleyhall.co.uk
Barley Hall is a stunning medieval townhouse, once home to the Priors of Nostell and the Mayor of York. Until the 1980s the house was hidden under the relatively modern façade of a derelict office block. Only when the building was going to be destroyed was the amazing medieval building discovered and its history revealed. The building has now been restored to its original splendour, with stunning high ceilings, exposed timber frames, and possibly the only horn window in England. It has been decorated to replicate the Snawsell home around 1483 and boasts a magnificent Great Hall. Visitors to Barley Hall can make themselves at home, sit on the chairs, handle the objects and experience what it would have been like to live in medieval England.
Directions Coffee Yard is located between Stonegate and Grape Lane. From Stonegate, look for the passage with the red devil.

A stunning, modern, garden created by acclaimed plantsman, Piet Oudolf. Striking perennial-meadow planting, which explodes with colour during the summer, contrasts with a green ‘silent garden’, and the dramatic use of grasses, bulbs and unusual shrubs extends the season. Allow plenty of time during your visit to explore the Walled Garden, with its specialist plant sales area and excellent catering, and the delightful Cascade Circuit Walk with a small children’s play area. Scampston Hall, open for a short period in the early summer, contains a fine collection of paintings, porcelain and furniture and guided tours are often led by the owner. This combination of a period family house and gardens, together with the C21st planting in the Walled Garden, make for a great day out.
Opening times Gardens: 18 April – 2 November, 10am5pm daily except Mons. Also B/Hols. House Tours: 25 May – 17 August 1pm, 2pm, 3pm Tues – Fri, plus Suns and B/Hol Mon.
