Impressive gardens are a feature of all the attractions from the formal parterres and knot gardens to old walled gardens and kitchen gardens with several holding national plant collections. Parkland escapes grace many of the historic estates with the opportunity to while away the hours and wander at your leisure. Fine Tearooms at most of the attractions offer superb al fresco refreshment or you may choose to suit yourself and simply picnic in the grounds. With cream teas, pastries and cakes to home-made savoury options there’s something to tingle and tempt most taste buds. Some attractions boast farm and specialist shops with a range of local grown produce and hearty fayre. Barley Hall

Barley Hall is a stunning medieval townhouse, once home to the Priors of Nostell and the Mayor of York. Until the 1980s the house was hidden under the relatively modern façade of a derelict office block. Only when the building was going to be destroyed was the amazing medieval building discovered and its history revealed. The building has now been restored to its original splendour, with stunning high ceilings, exposed timber frames, and possibly the only horn window in England. It has been decorated to replicate the Snawsell home around 1483 and boasts a magnificent Great Hall. Visitors to Barley Hall can make themselves at home, sit on the chairs, handle the objects and experience what it would have been like to live in medieval England.

Burnby Hall Gardens are home to a National Collection of over 100 varieties of Hardy Water Lily. These are cultivated on the Upper and Lower lakes and are in bloom from June to August. The Gardens comprise eight acres of woodland and garden, and feature an ornamental bridge, a Victorian Garden, an Aviary, a Rockery and a Stumpery. The Stewart Museum houses a fascinating collection of artefacts collected by Major Stewart on eight world tours that undertaken between 1906 and 1926. Events are held throughout the spring and summer, and include a Tulip Festival in May, children’s events on Wednesdays during the spring and Summer Holiday period, regular Sunday brass band concerts, and outdoor theatre events. 6

Magnificent 18th century house built by Sir John Vanbrugh for the 3rd Earl of Carlisle. Kiplin Hall

“A truly wonderful house and garden; perhaps the most pleasant country house I’ve seen!” This Jacobean country seat of the founder of Maryland, George Calvert, is an awardwinning historic house and garden. ‘Gothic’ wing added in the 1820s; redesigned in 1887 by W.E. Newby Hall & Gardens

Newby Hall is one of England’s renowned Adam houses; an exceptional example of 18th century interior decoration. The superb contents of the house include a rare set of Gobelins Tapestries, a renowned gallery of classical statuary and some of Chippendale’s finest furniture. The 25 acres of award-winning gardens are full of rare and beautiful plants. Newby’s famous double herbaceous border forms the main axis; off this central walk are formal compartmented gardens such as Sylvia’s Garden, a specialist Rose Garden, Water Garden and Autumn Garden. The National Collection of CORNUS (dogwoods) is also held at Newby. This magnificent abbey was established by devout monks seeking a simpler existence. The atmospheric ruins that remain are a window into a way of life which shaped the medieval world. When John Aislabie inherited Studley Royal, he set about creating an elegant water garden of mirror-like ponds, statues and follies, incorporating the romantic ruins into his design. Nostell was home of the Winn family for more than 350 years and the grand interiors designed by Robert Adam contain a renowned collection of Chippendale furniture. Discover one of Ryedale’s true gems, the 18th century landscape of Rievaulx Terrace and its temples. Stroll through the woodland, with its natural play areas for children, then out onto the terrace to experience the stunning views of Rievaulx Abbey and the surrounding valley. Only a few metres from York Minster, Treasurer’s House spans 2,000 years of history. Owned by Frank Green from 1897, you’ll see his love for antiques in every room, and his collections of furniture, ceramics, paintings and textiles. Tours take you on an exploration of the Roman road in the cellar to Edwardian servants’ quarters in the attics. Infamous ghost stories are another of the many quirky attributes of this House.
