As you leaf through this brochure you will find some truly spectacular gardens; RHS Harlow Carr Gardens, Newby Hall, Castle Howard, Scampston Hall, Harewood, Ripley Castle, Breezy Knees, Burnby Hall, Burton Agnes, Burton Constable, Parcevall Hall and York Gate, just for starters! The Forbidden Corner, a gigantic folly within a walled garden, is full of surprises - for adults and children. Thorp Perrow and the Yorkshire Arboretum have magnificent collections of trees and flowering shrubs. Enjoy the fabulous views and walks at Fountains Abbey and Rievaulx Terrace, the unique sculptures at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Wherever you go, you will always treasure those memories of a great day out. Some of our attractions will also be celebrating the 300th anniversary of the birth of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, Britain’s foremost landscape designer. Although the focus this year is on gardens, Yorkshire has an unrivalled collection of castles, stately homes and abbeys: places of history, beauty, fascination and entertainment. Most are surrounded by wide-open parkland and also have children’s play areas, tearooms and gift shops. They also host a wide range of events, from concerts to steam and vintage car rallies, food festivals to fun runs. Visit Yorkshire’s Great Houses, Castles and Gardens and enjoy the best that Britain has to offer. Sir Thomas Ingilby, Chairman Yorkshire’s Great Houses, Castles & Gardens

Ripley Castle Ripley, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG3 3AY Tel: 01423 770152 www.ripleycastle.co.uk

Ripley Castle has been home to the Ingilby family for over 700 years and its colourful and sometimes gruesome history is well documented. If the Castle walls could talk they would tell the story of kings and queens; civil war and plagues; secrets concealed behind the Knight’s Chamber panelling; the swashbuckling daughter who held Oliver Cromwell at gunpoint in the library, and numerous clandestine affairs. The Walled Gardens contain some of Britain’s largest herbaceous borders and in April display the National Hyacinth Collection. The Hothouses contain a fantastic tropical plant collection and the Kitchen Gardens include rare collections of herbs and spices, fruit trees and vegetables. In the pleasure grounds you can take a walk around the lake and into the Deer Park. 16
