ULURU CLIMBING MAY BE BANNED

Iconic Uluru is top of the to do list for travellers visiting Australia’s Red Centre, attracting around 200,000 people each year. But with less than 20% of visitors scaling the rock, Parks Australia are considering banning the climbing of Uluru outright, under pressure from the site's indigenous owners, for whom it is sacred. Safety, as well as cultural issues, have been cited in favour of a ban. Since 1956, 36 people have died while climbing the sandstone monolith. Parks Australia will be consulting with indigenous elders, the tourism industry and operators before making a decision. Many tour operators already recommend that visitors take the scenic base walk instead of climbing Uluru.

YOUR YHA YHA LTD AND YHA SOUTH AUSTRALIA MERGER

YHA

.A.

in S

li El

y

P ort

in Australia is a not for profit organisation that was founded by volunteer YHA members in each major city. These State Associations then came together as a federation of State bodies to form YHA Australia. For some years the national and state boards have had the objective of restructuring to one national organisation. In previous issues of Backpacker Essentials, YHA has reported on discussions and steps within YHA to achieve this objective. In January 2010, a merger was undertaken between YHA NSW and YHA Queensland into one organisation called YHA Ltd. This merger brought benefits including an integrated operation achieving greater efficiencies and delivering better services to YHA members. It ot has also allowed YH an m A f , the consolidation of on e o financial resources. In January 2012, following a strongly positive vote at an Extraordinary General Meeting in Melbourne in late 2011 a merger of YHA Victoria into YHA Ltd took place. YHA Ltd now encompasses not only NSW, Queensland and Victoria but also the ACT and the Northern Territory, and as such the entity equates to more than three quarters of YHA’s operations in Australia. The main office is in Sydney and there are regional offices in Brisbane and Melbourne.

Besides the goal of a full merger, YHA has continued to proactively work on ways to ensure efficient business operations so that funds are available to maintain and enhance the YHA hostel network, and member services. In line with this aim, YHA has steadily increased the number of shared services between the state bodies and National Office in the areas of accounts, membership, marketing and IT. In 2012 YHA Ltd and YHA South Australia started discussions regarding a possible merger and in December the two Boards entered into a Memorandum of Understanding that would guide the process. At the time of writing due diligence is underway in which both Boards have the opportunity to understand every aspect of the other organisation. Also under preparation is an Explanatory Memorandum about the merger which will, subject to the satisfactory completion of due diligence, be put forward along with a recommendation to merge from the YHASA Board to the members of YHASA at their AGM on 6 May 2013. The office located at Adelaide Central YHA will continue to be responsible for the YHA hostels in South Australia and will take on additional responsibilities for some YHA Travel and Tour products. YHA will continue to keep members up to date on news of changes within the organisation to further streamline operations. Members can see current information, including annual reports, at the About YHA section of yha.com.au

TED ROSE’S BUCKET LIST TOOK HIM TO PORT LINCOLN TO COME EYE-TO-EYE WITH A GREAT WHITE SHARK.

the ocean and its creatures have always sparked our sense of adventure. But to come face-to-face with a toothy but threatened Great White Shark in its natural habitat is the ultimate ocean adventure. I took the plunge with eco-certified Calypso Star Charters, who start the day with a 6am pickup from Port Lincoln on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula, Australia’s shark cage diving capital. A scenic three-hour cruise, accompanied by dolphins, took our group of slightly terrified thrill seekers out to the Neptune Islands, a breeding ground of the protected New Zealand fur seal – a preferred snack of the Great White. The islands are a Conservation Park and their pristine waters, offering visibility up to 20 metres, make them arguably the best site in the world to safely dive with these magnificent (and, many scientists believe, misunderstood) apex predators. We didn’t have to wait long. Within 10 minutes, we spotted the unmistakable shape of a dorsal fin gliding towards us. By drawing a large fish on a wire as bait our skipper, Andrew, lured the inquisitive shark towards the cage at the back of the boat. After edging ever so

Shark Cage Diving puts you within arm's length of the jaws of a Great White Shark

slowly closer and closer, the shark suddenly charged from below and clamped its colossal jaws around the bait, swallowing a chunk of meat the size of a poodle in one effortless gulp as we watched on in awe. “I think I’ll poop myself,” Kate from Boston squealed as we geared up in wetsuit and goggles, and Andrew helpfully attached weights to sink us to the bottom of the cage (or possibly keep us from jumping out). Breathing from a regulator you can only listen to the voice in your head and the rhythmic bashing of the waves on the boat while the cage is lowered underwater. With five other divers, I bobbed up and down like an egg on the boil, careful not to let even a pinky finger poke out of the cage; the anticipation was gripping. Nothing prepares you for what you see next. First a nose materialises silently like a ghost out of the blue, then, majestic and powerful the shark’s sleek body reveals itself a metre at a time: the head with jet black eyes, then the ash grey body with white underbelly from which they get their name, and finally the colossal tail fin. As it glides past,

an arm length from the cage, I notice a little pupil within the blackness of its eye, staring right back at me. The oldest fossils of Great Whites are more than 16 million years old, but overfishing and other factors have put these survivors on the endangered list. Many scientists now believe that Great White Sharks are highly intelligent and curious creatures not deserving of their mindless man-eater reputation, and Calypso’s crew keep records of the day’s activities to assist CSIRO studies into the shark’s behaviour. In fact, part of the attraction is that there’s still so much unknown when it comes to these sharks. No one has ever seen them give birth and the reason for their migrations and their way of life remains a mystery. What is certain, cage diving with Great White Sharks in South Australia is without comparison and a must on any adventure-seeker’s bucket list.

A photograph will remind you just how close that Shark was.

Celebrates!

IF YOU HAVEN’T BEEN TO AUSTRALIA’S CAPITAL CITY SINCE YOUR YEAR 6 EXCURSION, IT’S TIME TO RECONSIDER, WRITES KEREN LAVELLE.

“ANYTIME IN 2013

will be a great time to visit Canberra,” says Robyn Archer, the former cabaret artist, now festival director of an “absolutely packed year-long program” to celebrate the city’s Centenary. Canberra has been on a bit of a growth spurt lately, and it even has highrise flats, nightclubs, and hipster districts – sure signs of a 20-something city, even if it’s actually turning 100. You can pack a lot into a short break here at low or no cost. For starters, there are the ‘Nationals’ (Gallery, Museum, Portrait Gallery, Botanic Gardens, Library) with free displays. Then, staying at Canberra City YHA, you’re close to the after-dark action, with plenty of bars to explore: Tongue & Groove, Honky-Tonk’s, Kremlin, Playground, Phoenix, Muddle and Hippo to name a few. But this year Canberra’s turning on a year-long party for its birthday – so you have no excuse not to visit. To get you inspired browse the highlights below, or go to canberra100.com.au for a detailed list of what’s on when.

CENTENARY HIGHLIGHTS

ENLIGHTEN: 1-9 March. From dusk, wander the Parliamentary zone admiring projected lightworks on the iconic buildings, drop into exhibitions, have a drink in the Sculpture Garden or stare at the night sky through artist James Turrell’s Sky Space, both near the National Gallery. COOL PRECINCTS BRADDON: In the hipster strip of Lonsdale Street, in between car yards and outdoor clothing outlets, you’ll find house-blended coffee choices at Lonsdale Street Roasters (7 and 23 Lonsdale Street). Browse unique retail offerings including retro bicycles, unusual homewares, outré hairstylists, an organic bakery and Lifeline’s Hipsley Lane opshop selling fashion from the 80s and 90s, and 17 pop-up shops within Lonsdale Street Traders. Grab some Argentinian street food at Elk & Pea Eating House, which morphs from a café to a bar after the sun sets. Or go right back to the 80s with good-value Greek food at O’Stratos Taverna.
