/WORK SPAIN

FROM BONDI TO BARCELONA Paella, Picasso, and the Pyrenees. There’s good news for Aussies heading to Spain, with the two countries recently signing a reciprocal Work and Holiday visa agreement. The Work and Holiday visa, not to be confused with the Working Holiday Maker visa, permits up to 500 young adults (1830 years old) from Australia to take on shortterm work and study while travelling in Spain. The nitty gritty details are still in the works, so keep an eye on immi.gov.au for information about eligibility and when the new visa comes into effect. There are two types of visas available for young Australians wishing to work overseas while holidaying or studying; the ‘Working Holiday Maker Visa’ and ‘Work and Holiday Visa’. They may sound the same, but there are some important differences. Click here for the low down on both visas.

JAPAN'S BULLET TRAIN TURNS 50

BIG BLOG EXCHANGE WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Japan introduced its now-famous bullet train to the world in 1964. Fifty years on, the 300kph shinkansen bullet trains remain the gold standard in high-speed train travel. But JR Tokai, Japan's central railway company, are planning to go one step better. Construction is expected to start in 2014 on a levitating train propelled by electromagnetic pull. The high-tech train, which would not come online until 2027, would cut travel from Tokyo to Nagoya from 100 to 40 minutes.

Sixteen lucky bloggers have been chosen from entries across the globe to take part in Hostelling International's Big Blog Exchange. Australian blogger, Jono Cusack (seesomething.com.au), is among the winners who will swap lives, blogs and cultures for 10 days from 31 October. Find out more here.

CHRISTCHURCH

Christchurchnz

EARTHQUAKES IN 2010/2011 CHANGED CHRISTCHURCH’S CITYSCAPE AND SIMULTANEOUSLY SHOOK LOOSE A BOLDER, BRASHER AND MORE CREATIVE SPIRIT THAT IS RESHAPING WHAT DEAN JACK KNOWS AS HOME.

a city can lay claim to being the newest city in the South Pacific. These days in Christchurch, cranes and wrecking balls are replaced with clean slates, new buildings and a raft of vibrant things to see, do and experience. The New York Times ranked Christchurch #2 on their Cities to Go list in 2014. I couldn’t agree more.

IT’S NOT OFTEN

It’s the ideal stop for travellers who like to explore. Locals too. I decide to rediscover my city. To discover the new, incredible and local experiences that are gradually finding their way into guidebooks, the experiences that have emerged as a result of the earthquakes. The best way to go about it? By pedal power. I hire Ron Burgundy. To be precise, I hire a bike called Ron Burgundy from The Vintage Peddler (I should have worn my polyester suit!). Ron won’t win any races, but the bike is fun and a comfortable ride.

THE NEW YORK TIMES RANKED CHRISTCHURCH #2 ON THEIR CITIES TO GO LIST IN 2014.

Exploring Christchurch and Hagley Park by pedal power. Christchurchnz

I point Ron toward the nearby suburb of Woolston and the Tannery. The Tannery embodies the idea of a new Christchurch built on the old. It’s a transformed tannery site on the Heathcote River and is a bastion of heritage architecture (reinforced brickwork, leadlight glass and hand-laid tiles) with a modern twist: boutiques, a deli, yoga studio, fabric shop, craft brewer and music venues. An intimate cinematheque is on the cards for March 2015 where visitors can step out of the Tannery’s Victorian arcade and into German Expressionist styled theatres. I can’t stop at the Tannery without fueling up on the city’s best (I contend) woodfired pizza and pale ale. The Brewery has been doing pizza and cask-conditioned ale really well for a couple of years now. And live, local music too. Every weekend! The Brewery isn’t alone. Steadily and surely new live music venues and old favourites are opening or reopening their doors around the city. Like the Astro Lounge. It’s a quirky space with a pétanque court out back. I’ve caught the Latin American strums of Christchurch guitar maestro Dr Sanchez. I’ve seen the rockabilly band The Eastern at the Wunderbar and every time I visit the Re:Start mall there’s an ever-rotating roster of buskers.

Gustav’s Kitchen & Wine Bar boasts some of the best jazz in town. The Tannery

In the space of one afternoon at Re:Start I tap my toes to a jazz singer’s songs, sway with tap dancers’ rhythms and a fall under the spell of a street magician who weaves his magic over the crowd. Buskers love Re:Start, as do locals and travellers. It’s a bustling, funky, colourful, cantilevered pop-up container precinct—one of the first in the world—with over sixty 40ft shipping containers that have been painted, insulated and transformed into cheerful fashion, food and gift shops. Re:Start is symbolic of the spirit of the city—adaptability and sourcing creative solutions to tough challenges. And so is Gap Filler. Gap Filler came at the hands of locals who stepped up to temporarily transform vacant sites (left by demolished buildings) with art, music, dance, poetry readings, a book exchange and even a pavilion made with volunteer labour and 3,000 painted shipping pallets. Ron Burgundy and I roll on to Gloucester Street where a group of flamenco dancers take over the Dance-O-Mat. It’s a coin-operated, open-air dance floor and it’s one of many Gap Filler projects. Other gaps are filled with a citywide mini-golf course, a community bike shed/workshop and the Sound Garden which is across the street from the Dance-O-Mat.

Showing their moves on the Dance-O-Mat, a coin-operated, open-air dance floor. Christchurchnz

As I strike, strum and make spontaneous music on the Sound Garden’s improvised instruments, I think about this new Christchurch. And I also think about the places I’ve loved since I was a kid, the places that always made Christchurch singular in my mind: walking tracks in the Port Hills; Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens; the uncrowded beaches. I want to rediscover these too but I don’t think Ron is up for that journey. Tomorrow then. These days Christchurch is ever evolving and there will always be more to explore and discover tomorrow.

WHERE TO STAY A new YHA in Christchurch Post-earthquakes Christchurch has allowed locals and travellers the unique opportunity to witness a renaissance of sorts. Repairing, rebuilding, reopening happens daily across the city. YHA New Zealand is at the heart of Christchurch’s renewal by opening its second completely refurbished hostel in the heart of the city—YHA Christchurch. YHA Christchurch adds 120 beds to the CBD and offers spacious rooms in a heritage mansion/hotel opposite the Christchurch Arts Centre. Beds fill up fast, so book early!

GOOD EATS There are plenty of good eats around Christchurch including the newly opened Stranges Lane. An inconspicuous sign draws you in to a brick and glass lane with three New Orleans themed restaurants and bars because, like Christchurch, New Orleans rose from natural disaster ashes. Of less permanence and more mobility, Christchurch offers these good eats: Mamacita’s is a mobile taco truck bringing fresh, authentic Mexican street food to the hungry masses of Christchurch. Follow them to taco nirvana, but first check their daily location on Facebook! Pick up your Thai favourites at Thai Container, a cheap, cheerful and colourful caravan parked up on Bealey Ave and Caledonian Road. Good food at good prices. Oh, and the staff are always up for a laugh. Order your drinks at the bus. You don’t hear that often. The Smash Palace takes quirky aesthetic to a new level. And it’s very cool. Recycled doors act as tables and strands of multi-coloured lights fan out from the bus roof. Order from the greasy spoon menu or pick up a craft beer. One of the pioneers to operate out of shipping containers following the 2011 earthquake, The Caffeine Laboratory is still serving up Christchurch’s caffeine fix with their triple shot coffees as standard. Clockwise from top right: Akaroa alfresco; Lyttelton farmers market; The Caffeine Laboratory; .

Kieran Scott, ChristchurchNZ, YHA.

ON THE CHRISTCHURCH FRINGES Hop on the 28 bus for the port town of Lyttelton where you’ll pass through the tunnel and into a different side of Christchurch. Visit the Saturday morning farmer’s market, take a walk along the Crater Rim Walkway (part of an extinct volcano) or relax at Samo Coffee Lounge and enjoy the gosh-darned best muffins in Christchurch. The Port Hills are a haven for mountain bikers and it’s only going to get better. There’s an exciting development on the horizon: the world’s first purpose-built, year round, chairlift accessed, downhill mountain bike park covering 315-hectares. Akaroa is New Zealand’s only French settlement and is a 90 minute scenic drive from Christchurch. Stroll down Akaroa’s Frenchnamed streets or along the waterfront. Browse boutique shops and the museum. Then get out onto the harbour for a cruise or swim with the Hector’s dolphins (see our Akaroa swimming with dolphins deal).

NOOSA love

Tourism QLD

IT’S A HAVEN OF BEAUTY. A MECCA OF SUN, SEA AND SAND. KNOWN TO LOCALS AND VISITORS ALIKE AS ‘PARADISE’, NOOSA SOOTHES THE SOUL LIKE NOWHERE ELSE, AS JESSICA JANE SAMMUT REVEALS.

NOOSA. THINK SUN SOAKED

Tourism QLD

It's easy to see why Noosa is listed as one of the top ten beaches in Australia

No two days are the same with Wine for Dudes: Sampling wine straight from the barrel (above); tasting like a pro (right).

Tourism Noosa

white beaches, crystal clear azure waters and lush green rainforest. It’s the jewel in the crown of SouthEast Queensland, just a hop, skip and a jump from Sydney/Melbourne by plane, or a short bus ride from Brisbane. With a year-round sensational climate (a subtropical average of 30°C in the summer and 22°C in the winter), Noosa is the ideal coastal escape – a captivating paradise that touches the heart of all who visit. And I should know. As a backpacker who explored Noosa over ten years ago, I recently returned with my young family to live, having never got the little town out from under my skin. There is no place like it. Mornings spent watching the sunrise over the Pacific, as pods of dolphins dance in the surf ain’t a bad way to start the day, it has to be said. Listed as one of the top ten beaches in Australia and regularly one of the highest rating backpacker spots, Noosa has it all, offering a fun, beautiful and adventurous retreat for everyone. The question is, are you ready? Be prepared. You won’t want to leave. Without doubt, one of the highlights of Noosa has to be Noosa National Park. If you are looking for a view to die for, take a wander along the coastal path, stopping off at Boiling Pot and Dolphin Point, and you’ll see what I mean.

Maxime Coquard

Explore the native flora and fauna via the National Park's walking tracks.

Situated between Sunshine Beach and Noosa Main Beach, the National Park offers a whole host of walking tracks from which to explore the native flora and fauna of the area, and you might even spot a koala, of which there are several. If you feel like getting a bird’s eye view of the locality, head to the Laguna Lookout. The swirling sandbars, turquoise waterways and surf-laden ocean of Laguna Bay are a sight to behold, reminiscent of one of those Peter Lik postcards. Talking of water, Noosa is full of it, with most of its activities based either on or around it. Top of the list has to be Noosa Main Beach, a sheltered north-facing cove offering sand so fine it is known as ‘Noosa sand’, together with pristine clear waters and waves that are perfect for swimming. The home of the Noosa Festival of Surfing, you will find long board surfers hanging ten at First Point, while standup paddle boarders (SUP) ease their way along the coastline, some complete with dogs! For those feeling like a slice of the vibe, surfboards and SUPs can be hired relatively inexpensively from a number of venues. Just make sure you don your GoPro while giving it a whirl to capture those magic moments! Noosa Cove, the next bay along going towards the National Park, is also a big hit for those wanting to get off the main drag for something a little more intimate.

Tourism QLD Tourism QLD

If it’s a breathtaking sunset you are after, the Noosa River is the place to be, either lounging on its banks with some fresh fish and chips in hand from one of the local eateries, or basking in its glory from a kayak or jet ski (easy to hire from anywhere along the river if feeling energetic), or via the chilled out comfort of the Noosa Ferry (if not). In fact, the Noosa Ferry runs a well-loved pre-dinner Sunset Cruise from Tuesday to Saturday for an affordable AU$20 per person, where you can BYO (glasses and ice provided), sit back and relax as you glide amongst the yachts of Woods Bay and past the multimillion dollar waterfront homes of Noosa Sound, before taking in the sunset at the river entrance. With the Noosa International Food and Wine Festival in May, the Noosa Long Weekend Arts Festival in July and the Noosa Jazz Festival in September, there is always something to be celebrating in Noosa. And if you feel like celebrating just because, a cocktail on the beach is certainly a must with Bistro C my personal favourite spot for such afternoon delights. With a special menu between the hours of 3pm to 5pm, where everything listed is between AU$3 and $5, a glass of bubbles or a jar of cocktail is a sweet treat. Chill to the sounds of swaying palms and pumping Bistro C beats (especially on a Sunday). You can even follow it up with a beach massage from the little pop-up massage salon found on the sand just up from Bistro C. Look for the tent and some very relaxed peeps. It’s a wonder anyone makes it out of Noosa at all.

Take in the views and the atmosphere as the sun sets on another perfect Noosa day.

LOCAL SECRET SPOTS Known for its beauty, Noosa is an iconic destination. But there are some things only a local knows best. Here are my top secret spots:

1

Sunshine Beach – Sunshine Beach is the next town south along the coast from Noosa Heads and is well worth the walk/bus ride. Offering a cool, hipster, affluent, yet surfy vibe, the little village is perfect for a chilled out coffee, especially first thing in the morning as the sun comes up. With an east-facing surf beach, you can enjoy watching the dedicated in-crew catch their early morning waves as you greet the day with the sun on your skin. There’s no feeling like it. If you are brave, you can even go for a dip yourself, or join one of the many active locals jogging along the shore. From June to October, you might even spot a whale or two frolicking in the deep, on their annual migration.

2

Tea Tree Bay – Tea Tree Bay is, in my humble opinion, one of the most incredible beaches in Australia, if not the world. Only accessible by foot after a walk through the National Park, the bay offers a shore to rival The Beach and is my go-to place for unadulterated beachside bliss. So take a book and lose yourself (and don’t forget to bank that memory to feed off on a rainy day when you are back home).

3

The Noosa Everglades – The Noosa Everglades is one of only several everglades in the world. Harbouring more species than Kakadu National Park in an area 25 times smaller, it is truly one of Australia’s most spectacular wilderness areas. Grab a river cruise or a kayak and come face to face with some very cool wetlands in all their natural beauty.

Tourism QLD

Grab a kayak and discover the rich wilderness area of the Noosa Everglades.

BACKPACKING AT THE BEACH Located right in the heart of Noosa, just off the world renowned Hastings Street (the main shopping district of Noosa Heads which runs parallel to Noosa Main Beach), it is easy to see why Halse Lodge YHA has long been a popular choice. The closest hostel to the beach (only 100m away), the National Trust/heritage listed building is set in two acres of rainforest, offering a charm to match Noosa’s good looks. With an awesome bar and restaurant offering delicious yet affordable food, live music and a great atmosphere to match (especially in the evening), Halse Lodge is a tremendous spot day or night. It even offers a daily bus to Steve Irwin’s Australia Zoo, which is well worth the visit if you fancy a splurge. With some holiday-makers paying over AU$1000 a night to stay on the same beachside strip (albeit in a luxury apartment), it is clear to see why Halse Lodge is an ever popular and well-loved hangout for the budget conscious.

WHERE TO STAY Noosa Everglades Canoe Tour special: 2 nights’ multi-share accommodation plus a fullday guided canoe tour through the magical Everglades, from only AU$185 per person. Book through any YHA hostel or direct with Halse Lodge YHA.

FIVE DAYS, FIVE NEW (AND WALLET-FRIENDLY) WAYS TO EXPLORE CLASSIC LONDON, BY SHANEY HUDSON.

From a pint in a pub to a West End show, there are some classic London experiences you just have to indulge in, no matter what your budget. However, the best thing about London is that it is constantly evolving, and so too are the ways to enjoy its classic, essential experiences. Here are five new ways to tick the London box.

D A Y

1

THE CLASSIC EXPERIENCE: Seeing a show in the West End: London’s theatre scene is second to none. While you can still pick up a reduced price ticket from the TKTS booth in Leicester Square, a West End show can be a hit to the hip pocket. THE NEW WAY: Get along to the Prince Charles Cinema in the West End. Currently hiding under heavy scaffolding, visitors can catch a quirky sing-a-long cult movie session, with plenty of classics on offer, including sing-along Frozen, aca-along Pitch Perfect, quote-along The Big Lebowski or bitchalong Mean Girls, with many people dressing up (and performing) in character.

HAVE THE ANTIPODEANS REALLY ABANDONED HAVE THE ANTIPODEANS LONDON? REALLY ABANDONED LONDON? Recently, the Walkabout pub in Shepherd’s Bush called last drinks, the Australian Shop ceased trading and TNT magazine went into administration. Much hoopla was made in the media about how New Zealanders and Australians were abandoning Londonbut is this really the case? While there has been a significant decline in Australians and New Zealanders utilising the Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme (previously known as the Working Holiday Visa) over the last decade, they haven’t completely abandoned London. Instead, travel trends have changed, as a younger, confident generation no longer see the UK as the only opportunity they’ll have to work overseas. Visitor numbers are steady, and instead of working in the city, young travellers are using the capital as an anchor for their European holiday, making London a base to explore Britain and beyond. The Antipodes haven’t abandoned London. They’re just experiencing the city in a different way.

THE CLASSIC EXPERIENCE: Having a pint in the pub: There’s generally a pub on every corner in London, making this an easy box for most visitors to tick. However, a fair few central London pubs are run by chains, and not all of them are showcasing London’s exploding craft beer scene. THE NEW WAY: There are now about 50 microbreweries located within the London limits, with many featuring tasting rooms, brewery tours and pub grub. Crate Brewery, in East London, runs weekend tours of its brewery and also has a popular pizzeria, while Duke’s Brew and Que offers ribs and craft beer from Beavertown Brewery.

Taste your way through the menu of craft beer on offer at Crate Brewery. Crate Brewery

Bag a bargain at the Old Spitalfields Market. Chris Van Hove

LONDON’S GREEN PARKS It’s easy to feel hustled amongst the bustle of busy London. The best way to keep sane is to head into one of London’s Parks, which act not only as a green belt for the city but as a cultural melting pot for Londoners from all walks of life. Pack a picnic lunch and people watch in one of the eight Royal Parks in London, many of which are home to key monuments and sights including the Albert Memorial, Kensington Palace and the Horse Guard Parade. Often overlooked, Richmond Park is home to hundreds of free-roaming deer and is popular with cyclists, while Hampstead Heath remains a local favourite for its views of the city. Also worth a look is London’s newest parkland, the 560-acre Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in East London, which has been modified and redeveloped as a community space after the 2012 London Games.

THE CLASSIC EXPERIENCE: London markets: Typically, London’s most famous markets - Camden, Portobello Road and Borough - are also its busiest. While each market has its unique appeal, the prices, crowds and heavy tourist presence can be a bit overwhelming. THE NEW WAY: The perfect rainy day option, head to Old Spitalfields Market, a covered market near Liverpool Street Station nestled behind a modern pedestrian mall that is open seven days a week. In one section you’ll find clothing and handcrafted goods; another a treasure trove of antique clothing, curios and vintage goods.

Greenwich Park Shutterstock

4

THE CLASSIC EXPERIENCE: Hop-on, hop-off doubledecker tourist buses: London’s complex transport network can be intimidating, so it’s easy to give in to temptation and jump on an expensive sightseeing bus. However, with London carving out a new skyline (think the Shard, cheese grater, gherkin and walkie-talkie buildings) and a budget-friendly daily bus cap of £4.40, taking a public bus is the way to go. THE NEW WAY: Top routes include the Number 11, which takes you past St Pauls, Trafalgar Square and Big Ben; the Number 74, which takes in Kensington, Harrods and Hyde Park; and the RV1 past the London Eye, Covent Garden and Tower of London.

London's bus network can take you anywhere from the London Eye, top, to Big Ben and The Houses Of Parliament, bottom. Shutterstock

5

THE NEW WAY: With its collective workspaces, shipping container department store, urban street art and cafes with signs declaring, “all hipsters must be accompanied by a responsible adult”, Shoreditch isn’t necessarily everyone’s cup of tea. However, the occasionally gritty and increasingly gentrified suburb offers a brilliant insight into London life, especially at night when the bars along Shoreditch High Street get going.

The occasionally gritty and increasingly gentrified suburb of Shoreditch is London's latest 'it' destination. Chris Van Hove

WHERE TO STAY There are 7 YHA hostels in central London ranging from the historic Holland Park in Kensington and St Pauls near the cathedral, to modern YHA London Central.

yha.org.uk

THE CLASSIC EXPERIENCE: Visiting the “it” destination: London’s latest “it” destination can change as quickly as the weather. Trendy suburbs like Notting Hill, Chelsea and Soho still have pull (thanks to famous movies, celebrity homeowners and a robust dining scene) but there’s always a new area emerging - and the current cool kid is Shoreditch.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA’S KANGAROO ISLAND HAS “WILD” IN BUCKET LOADS, WRITES DI CAUGHT.

IT'S A

WTHING LD FEATURE / KANGAROO ISLAND

IF YOU ARE

planning a trip to Kangaroo Island, you can begin with its wild history - think sealers, escaped convicts and runaway sailors. Before they arrived, the island was known to the aboriginal people on the mainland as Karta, “Island of the Dead”, probably because a creation being from the Dreamtime, Ngurunderi, crossed to the island, from where he travelled to the Milky Way. The spirits of the dead of a number of tribes were believed to follow his track to the afterlife in the sky.

Then there’s the wildlife – you’ll be surrounded by it. Literally. With seals, sea lions (yes, they are different), penguins and dolphins being a few of the stand outs to inhabit the pristine waters that meet the sparkling white beaches and towering cliffs encircling the island. Back on terra firma is where Kangaroo Island gets its reputation of being a “zoo without fences”. Preserved by its isolation from the mainland, this is the place to experience Australia’s unique wildlife in a pristine environment. Kangaroo Island’s namesakes are a little wilder than the ones on the mainland with longer fur and darker colour. You’ll also find rare bird life, Tamar wallabies, short-beaked echidnas and loads of happy koalas, relaxing in their favourite eucalyptus branches, gorging themselves on their staple diet of leaves and giving a new definition to the word “chilled”. For the patient and determined, there are also opportunities to spot the elusive and intriguing egg-laying, duck-billed, beavertailed, otter-footed mammal platypus – oh yes, they’re special alright.

Be sure your camera is fully charged as once you’re done taking photos of the unique inhabitants of the “Galapagos of Australia” you’ll be wanting to capture some lasting memories of the wild scenery. Underground caves and awesome rocks formations – it’s all here. You’ll include Remarkable Rocks, where fun images of travellers interacting with the rocks seem to be the go. Admiral’s Arch boasts what appear to be stalactites that are in fact fossilised rock formations, framing the ocean beyond and offering a playground for the charming New Zealand Fur Seals to show off their incredible dexterity in the lapping waves. Then there’s the long winding roads wreathed by dense native forest, isolated beaches with caves filled with fairy penguins resting their eyes from the harsh light of day, you get the picture - pun intended!
