YHA QUEENSTOWN LAKEFRONT Get ready for a jaw-dropping refurbished YHA Queenstown Lakefront. The hostel saw upgrades late last year and reopened their doors to eager travellers who can’t stop talking about it. The massive kitchen (made even massiver), dining and laundry have been completely reconstructed and refurbished. So have the multishare bedrooms, with plush new carpet, new beds, fresh licks of paint and locker storage with plenty of ever-handy powerpoints. Even the bathrooms had a makeover! While there’s still some work left to do, the upgrades are just in time for the mad rush of travellers eager to land in the alpine village as soon as the white stuff hits the mountains. As for those million dollar views of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables? Rest assured, they’re still exactly the same.

ECO BY NAME, ECO BY NATURE. From providing bags to walkers to collect rubbish on their hikes, to water efficient shower heads; the staff at Grampians Eco YHA do what they can to minimise their environmental footprint. Most recently, Grampians Eco YHA revamped their veggie garden with water-efficient wicking beds. These two self-contained raised beds with built-in reservoirs supply water from the bottom up; thereby preventing the evaporation of surface water. Since being built, the hostel has recorded watering the beds 80 percent less than what they used to! While excitingly, their yield has increased three-fold. On top of their garden beds growing vegetables and herbs, their fruit orchard and chickens that provide fresh eggs for guests, Grampians Eco YHA has started growing a range of plants previously used by indigenous peoples for food, medicine and ceremonial purposes. Plants that have thrived in the Grampians’ climate so far include: native basil, blue flax lily, lemon myrtle, bush onion, bush tomato, BOOK vanilla lily and more. The hostel managers NOW even provide recipes for guests, using these indigenous ingredients from the garden!

BUSH REGENERATION AT PITTWATER YHA Pittwater YHA is located in New South Wales’ Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park in northern Sydney. Accessible only by ferry, this hostel is a unique Sydney “escape” from the city. YHA is offering all green thumbs the chance to help our beautiful native surrounds with this envirofun package. Volunteer for two mornings’ regenerating the bush and receive 2 nights’ BOOK NOW accommodation, all meals and use of kayaks. And it’s only $20 per person.

YHA LTD BOARD OF DIRECTORS As a not-for-profit organisation, YHA is governed by a Board of Directors that volunteers their time and skills to oversee the organisation’s strategic direction. Each year, eligible and experienced members are invited to stand for election to the Board. The YHA Ltd Board covers operations in the ACT, NSW, NT, Queensland, South Australia and Victoria. In 2016 there were three vacancies on the board and three nominations received being: • Robert McGuirk – based in Victoria • Leonie Thijssen – based in Queensland • Matthew McNeil – based in New South Wales During the past year, Directors met at a variety of locations around Australia, including Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Fremantle. The Street Food Collective is a restaurant-meets-farmers market style affair that defies the alley it’s tucked into with lush, green space like your nana’s back garden. The buzzy collective in bustling Ponsonby opens seven days, all day, and features the city’s famous food trucks including The Little Yellow Food Truck, The Lucky Taco and The Pie Piper where pie = happiness. Take your pick from waffles, hot dogs, burgers, ice cream, Korean food and Mexican. Wash it down with a handcrafted beer or local vino. Whilst in the neighbourhood explore Ponsonby Central, a buzzing gastro hub with a regular turnover of fashionable pop ups, a hipster barber and even a resident clairvoyant. Eat, drink, shop is the rule of the day here. When you step off Ponsonby Road you enter a stretching catacomb of hip eateries, cafés, cocktail bars, restaurants, and a produce market, all tucked under one roof. Feeling peckish? For a classic Kiwi meal, try some not-your-average fish and hand cut chips at Fish Fish. Miss Moonshines The Street Food Collective

Locals flock to food truck paradise in the Windy City. Chook Wagon and Berry Culture park up outside everyone’s favourite independent supermarket, Moore Wilson’s, which is more like the overgrown lovechild of a top-end delicatessen and local greengrocer than a supermarket. Cuba Street’s Ekim Burgers make a mean burger and scoop of chips and, if you’re lucky, you might spot The Fire Truck, a converted 1963 Bedford TK truck that has lived a diverse and adventurous life and now makes the rounds dishing out American BBQ-style cuisine, sometimes with kimchee, other times with barbequed wild goat and green tea noodles. For more cheap eats in Wellington, try a food market. Wander amidst the rich smoky air at Wellington Night Market on a Friday evening. Transforming the usually reserved Left Bank into a street scene more reminiscent of Saigon when the sun goes down, the market has got at least twenty stalls featuring flavours from the Caribbean to the Philippines. You’ll be hard pressed not to find something to savour. Saturday morning, the waterfront Wellington Underground Markets are the place for lip-smacking food and coffee carts. You won’t miss it – just look for the bunting outside the magically transformed underground carpark. By Sunday you’ll have to roll yourself to the Harbourside City Market, Wellington’s oldest produce market, serving fresh fruit and vege to hungry Wellingtonions since 1920. Wellington Night Market

CHRISTCHURCH The revitalised Christchurch’s food scene emphasises showcasing the quality produce grown throughout Canterbury. Following the 2010/2011 earthquakes, empty lots have been filled with foodies turning their passions into pop-up restaurants and food trucks. Tucked behind most corners of the central city you’ll find some form of food delivery vehicle dishing out cuisines from around the globe. Keep an eye out for Cakes By Anna. The rule of thumb, “never trust a skinny cook” does not apply. Anna has knack for making cakes that are a tour de force in both taste and looks. Her signature? Lemon cake with berries. There’s also the bagel and bread guru Grizzly Bagel. Black and White Coffee Cartel is all about showcasing some of these local food heroes with cabinets stacked with delicious treats. Oh, and you can get a banging cup of coffee— black or white, syphon or cold brew—served with a cheeky grin and good banter. For the best cheap and cheerful food, head to Friday Night Food Trucks in the Square for Mexican, Japanese, Transylvanian, American and Italian cuisine. Gap Filler also hosts a number of food trucks from Tuesday to Saturday at The Commons. The Christchurch Farmers Market has the best selection of ready to eat mid-morning munchies, plus the best selection of local produce to cart away.

D a r w i n fo r t h e f i r s t t i m e recently, I admit I sort of imagined a dusty red ghost town. Well, I owe Darwin an apology. This cool northern outpost exceeded my expectations. Anything but dull, Darwin is a laidback paradise for lovers of the outdoor lifestyle. It’s a tropical city buzzing with atmosphere and the promise of adventure.

Owing to its proximity to Asia, and its enthusiastic population of expats and travellers, many cultures come together in Darwin. And you know what that means? Food. One of the best (and most budgetfriendly) ways to experience the exotic flavours of this city is at the legendary Mindil Beach Sunset Markets. The rows of 60 food stalls offer up everything from Aussie burgers to Indonesian, Greek, Malay and Chinese cuisines. There are health-conscious natural treats alongside the likes of crepes, oysters and smoothies.
Held every Thursday and Sunday during the Dry Season, the beachfront markets are humming with people and you won’t want to miss it. BYO is encouraged and there is often live music and entertainment. As the sun starts to dip below the horizon people gravitate toward the sand to watch its fiery show and you can almost hear a collective sigh of relief as the balmy heat of the day cools slightly. Of course, the markets aren’t home to only food, with 130 other stalls selling locally made jewellery, homewares, Indigenous art and other curious items like whips and animal bones.

For more markets, try the Saturday morning Parap Village Markets. Hosting food stalls, art, clothing and jewellery, plus fresh produce, these markets have more of a local feel. Parap is a nice neighbourhood to check out regardless, with small art galleries, boutiques and cafes, including popular corner spot, Laneway Speciality Coffee. It’s nailed the industrial vibe with its combination of exposed brick, polished concrete and dark metal. Hanging vines drape over a big welcoming window, the staff are friendly and the food delicious.
Not far from Parap is Fannie Bay. For a donation, history buffs or fans of creepy old gaols can see cells where lepers and criminals were once held at Fannie Bay Gaol, which closed in 1979. Also on the bay, with a view of the turquoise sea and rocky coastline is the impressive – and free – Art Gallery and Museum of NT. First up, meet Sweetheart, an enormous five-metre long, 780-kilogram stuffed saltwater crocodile that terrorised fishermen in the ‘70s. The Cyclone Tracy exhibit puts the disaster into perspective with photographs and displays. And you can stand inside a small, pitch-black room that plays an actual recording of the roaring sounds of the cyclone’s destruction. The gallery’s Indigenous art collection is awesome, housing woven objects, carvings and painting of many styles. A highlight is the hangar-sized maritime gallery filled with actual boats from Top End islands, Indonesia and beyond. Walking around them for a close-up look, and accompanied by their stories, is fantastic. Among the collection are pearling luggers, incredible sea gypsy vessels and a Vietnamese refugee boat. A trip to Darwin wouldn’t be complete without seeing at least one croc. There are more than 80,000 saltwater crocodiles gliding through the waterways of northern Australia. Venture about an hour from Darwin to Adelaide River to see them leap from the murky brown water. The Spectacular Jumping Crocodile Cruise is an all-girl crew of wildlife enthusiasts who are brimming with frightening information. Did you know that if you enter the water, a croc could sense your heartbeat up to a kilometre away? The cruise is on a two-storey boat and the breezy shade of the top deck gives a great view of these enormous prehistoric creatures as they launch high out of the water at dangling hunks of meat.

Back in the CBD, splurge on a unique opportunity to dive with a crocodile at Crocosauraus Cove’s Cage of Death. You’re placed in a cage and lowered into the water for a face-to-face meeting. Keen to cool off without a reptile leering at you? Darwin’s Waterfront has a swimming lagoon and wave pool, free from sharks, jellyfish and crocs.
The options for going out in Darwin are diverse. Mitchell Street is always happening and the city’s many waterfront spots show off Darwin’s love of the outdoor lifestyle. Lola’s Pergola at Cullen Bay Marina is a carnivalesque bar with a fun feel and a prime position on the wharf. Another favourite spot is De La Plage, a laidback cafe on Casuarina beach where you can lounge about on colourful beanbags spread out on green lawn by the beach. The atmosphere is even more vibrant on Sundays when there’s live music, and visit on Friday nights for street food. A magical experience for a balmy tropical Darwin evening is a movie under the stars at the Deckchair Cinema. Located at the southern end of the Darwin Waterfront, chill out on striped deck chairs in a clearing surrounded by tropical gardens. Bring your own food or choose from the kiosk where local restaurants take it in turns serving dinner, including Darwin institution Hanuman. So when it comes time to plan your next winter escape, don’t look past Darwin like I used to. This unique destination has so much to offer, and is right in our own backyard. I know I can’t wait to return.

Wherever we go and whatever our travel budgets, whether we’re exploring the world’s great cities or natural beauties off the beaten track, we need a way to take some money with us, and a way spend it along the way. Once upon a time, cash and travellers cheques were the only means of doing this. Now it’s all about cards. Most of us don’t leave home without at least one piece of plastic in our wallets: an everyday ATM card, a credit or debit card and/or a travel money card. But which card is best, and how can you streamline your spending on your next trip and minimise fees and charges at the same time?

PAY BEFORE YOU PLAY: TRAVEL MONEY CARDS
TRAVEL MONEY CARDS
Travel money cards, sometimes still called pre-paid travel cards, have come a long way since the first one, the Travelex Cash Passport Card, was introduced more than a d e ca d e a g o . I f yo u h a ve n ’ t u s e d o n e before, here’s the drill: before you travel, purchase a card and “load” funds onto it in the currency of your destination (or destinations; multi-currency cards are now more common than singlecurrency cards) so that when you’re away you can use the card to withdraw cash at ATMs or make purchases. There are dozens of travel money cards to choose from now, most linked to either Mastercard or Visa networks, giving you access to more than 30 million ATMs, eftpos and credit card locations worldwide (Mastercard claims to have 39 million locations). All the major banks, and even supermarkets like Coles and Woolworths, now have their own travel money cards. Then there’s the Australia Post Load & Go Travel Card, the NZ Post Loaded for Travel card, the American Express Global Travel Card, the STA Travel CashFLEX Visa Card and airline frequent flyer cards that can be used as travel money cards (see below) – all with their own strengths and weaknesses. Here are a few pros and cons of travel money cards in general:
PROS: You can load multiple (usually 10) currencies onto one card, lock in exchange rates and keep track of your spending online. You’ll know exactly what you’re paying to withdraw cash at an overseas ATM; some cards have no withdrawal fees, but even the ones that do charge much less than you’d pay for using your regular debit/credit card at an overseas ATM. You can also use these cards to make purchases or bookings, even online, without hefty credit card fees. And they’re more secure than a card linked to your home bank account, if only because there’s usually less cash on your travel money card. CONS: Getting a travel money card can be a hassle if you’re travelling at short notice or only going away for a few days – unless you already have a card you can reload for your new trip. FEES & CHARGES: The main fees to look for when weighing up different travel money cards are the purchase fee, withdrawal fees at overseas ATMs and load/reload fees. Some cards charge $10-15 to purchase the card, but have no withdrawal fees, which is handy if you don’t want to carry much cash around while you’re away. Others issue their cards free, but charge you to use them (about $2 to $2.50 per withdrawal), such as the Australia Post Load & Go and the Qantas and Virgin Australia cards (see below). The Multi-Currency Cash Passport and NAB Traveller cards are two of the few that have no purchase fees, load fees or overseas ATM fees. There can also be fees for additional or replacement cards (up to $15) and monthly inactivity fees (up to $10 a month) if you don’t use the card for 12 months. Also remember that overseas ATMs can charge their own fees on top of your card’s withdrawal fees.

AIRLINE TRAVEL MONEY CARDS FLY AWAY: AIRLINE TRAVEL MONEY CARDS
In 2013, Qantas and Virgin Australia launched travel money cards for their frequent flyer members – Qantas Cash and Virgin Velocity Global Wallet – which was a real game-changer. Instead of having to buy a dedicated travel money card, you can now load funds onto your frequent flyer card before you travel. According to Mastercard, Australian travellers have loaded $1.3 billion dollars onto the Qantas Cash card since 2013, a testimony to its success, and these cards do have a few advantages over other travel money cards – as well as a few hitches. PROS: The big advantage of these cards is that there’s no purchase, load or reload fees and you can rack up frequent flyer points whenever you use them (one point for every $1 or foreign currency equivalent spent while travelling). The ATM fees are also relatively low compared to other cards: $US1.95 per withdrawal. You can load up to 11 currencies onto either card (Virgin’s card lets you load only five currencies at a time), including Australian dollars – which is handy in countries whose currencies you can’t upload, such as Bali or China (you then have to pay an exchange rate on top of the withdrawal fee). Qantas Cash can be used wherever Mastercard is accepted, Velocity Global Wallet wherever Visa is accepted. CONS: You have to be a frequent flyer member to use them. Joining Virgin’s Velocity program is free, but Qantas membership costs AU$89.50 for Australian residents. You also need to make sure your frequent flyer card is Qantas Cash - or Velocity Global Wallet-enabled (regular frequent flyer cards might not have the required chip); if it isn’t, ordering a new card can take up to 21 days. For sheer spontaneity, you can’t beat the credit cards and debit/ ATM cards already in your wallet. At least 183 credit and 152 debit cards now allow international access to funds, according to financial services reviewer CANSTAR (a useful resource for comparing cards, incidentally). Like travel money cards, these cards give you access to more than 30 million Visa and Mastercard credit/debit card facilities and ATMs worldwide. PROS: Convenience is the big one – just pack and go. No need to buy a dedicated travel money card or load funds in various currencies. You can access and transfer funds using internet banking anywhere in the world. Most cards can be replaced if lost or stolen, often within 24 hours, and some financial institutions offer insurance for items or services bought using their cards. CONS: Fees and charges tend to be higher for these cards than for travel money cards. How high depends on whether you use your credit or debit card, how you use them and which bank you’re with. FEES & CHARGES: The most common fees with these cards are: ATM fees (usually $5 per withdrawal), foreign transaction fees (2-3 per cent of the transaction amount) and cash advance fees (when using your credit card to withdraw cash from an ATM). Some banks try to make travel easier for their customers. The 28 Degrees Platinum Mastercard, for instance, has no annual or foreign currency conversion fees and offers 55 days interest-free (introduced small cash advance fee) and Bankwest’s Zero Platinum Mastercard has no annual fees or foreign transaction fees and received an “outstanding” rating from CANSTAR last year. Comparing travel money options can feel like comparing apples with bread rolls. So before you buy, decide what your priorities are and keep your own travels in mind in terms of how long you’re going to be away, where you’re going and how much you plan to spend. The cards you already have – whether they’re credit, debit or frequent flyer cards – are often best for spontaneous and/or short trips; travel money cards or other cards you’re prepared to shop-around for, are ideal when you’re travelling for longer than a few days and/or planning to spend more than about $800 (on top of your airfares). Lastly, for peace of mind, spread the load, so to speak. Take a bit of cash in the local currency for small daily expenses such as train tickets, cups of coffee and tips, particularly on arrival; a credit card in case of emergency, to rent cars and for online purchases; and a travel money card for the bulk of your travel funds to lock in exchange rates and keep withdrawal fees to a minimum.
