Paper Crafts Connection Making personal connections through the art of paper crafting. 2012 Gallery Idol Challenge Winner, Joscelyne Cutchens
Holly ANDERSON
Each year here at Paper Crafts, we host an intense blog competition with talented competitors and round after round of engaging challenges. Gallery Idol is the name of the game, and some of the most creative and talented designers come together to compete. This year we had an amazing group of card creators, but after five rounds, only one could end up on top. This year’s winner is none other than Joscelyne Cutchens! We asked Joscelyne what she enjoyed most about the competition, and here’s her top five list. #1 The clean desk. I loved that I actually cleaned my desk in between card-making days so I would have the space to create a new project.
Joscelyne Cutchens
#2 The luxury of one card. I loved the weekly themes and being able to devote hours and product to one or two cards. I loved the process from sketching to creating to re-creating. #3 The love. I g got so many kind words, comments, and emails of encouragement th throughout the competition. My heart was bursting with the love! #4 The girls. Although Al it was a competition, it was also an opportunity to ge get to know 19 other ladies. We discussed our favorite products and brands, what the next theme might be, and our fears and our challenges. We cheered each other on, and for that I am truly tha thankful. #5 The prizes! The prize box that was delivered to my hug It was overflowing with goodies from so doorstep was huge. many companies. I also won a trip to a Creating Keepsakes fee so lucky to be part of this group of Gallery Convention. I feel Idol winners!

Dear Go-to Gals Answers to YOUR questions from the Paper Crafts Go-to Gals “I´ve heard other stampers use the term `masking´. What is it exactly, and what are some ways I can incorporate it into my stamping projects?“ —Clueless in Canada
Jennifer: Masking is one of the most versatile stamping techniques. Traditionally, masking allows you to get a layered look with multiple images without any messy overlap. In order to mask a stamped image, just stamp an identical image on scrap paper and cut it out. This piece is then placed over the main stamped image. When additional stamping is done on top of this, your original image will stay protected. Masking is great when creating a stamped scene! It is also great for inking techniques as you can ink a background (seen in my card here) while keeping the main stamped image clean and crisp.
14
Julie: I love masking because it allows you to combine stamps in really unique ways. One of my favorite masking techniques combines fussy cutting with stamps. Simply stamp an image, fussy-cut a mask, and then stamp a background on top. The main image stays nice and crisp and pops from the stamped pattern that you’ve created. You can even create your own background paper by masking multiple images on the same piece of cardstock.
Windy: There are so many ways that you can use masks on your stamping projects. I´m fond of using pre-made plastic masks in conjunction with stamps and ink to add layers and depth on my projects. To create a layered card like the one below, you simply start by stamping a background. Apply a mask (you can find some that are self-cling or you can tack it down with repositionable adhesive). Then ink over the mask. Remove the mask and stamp the sentiment/image with a darker colored ink. This creates three layers of depth. You could even mask and ink again to create even more layers!

Teri: One of my favorite things to mask is a flower bouquet. Start with one flower stamp. I find one that is just a flower without leaves works the best. Stamp it on a repositionable note. Fussy-cut it. Then stamp the flower on a panel of cardstock. Set the mask on top and stamp the flower again. This time, you want to move the flower slightly over so you stamp it on the mask and paper panel. Remove the mask. Set it over your second stamped flower and slightly move the stamp over and stamp again. Repeat these steps until your bouquet is as big as you want it to be. Finish off your bouquet by stamping some leaves. Be sure to re-use your mask to cover up the flowers you want to add leaves to.
Betsy: Masking is a technique used in stamping that has many variations! A “mask” can be a scrap of paper, a repositionable note (which works well because of the temporary adhesive already on it to keep it in place), a fussy-cut image, or even a die cut. For my card here, I used a “reverse masking” technique in which I die-cut banner shapes from a scrap of paper and placed the negative portion of the die cut over my card base to act as a mask. I used some basic background stamps to stamp over the cut-out. Once the mask is removed, I can see that my background image has taken on the shape of the banner! I could do this with any die cut shape! It’s quick and easy and a great way to stretch your stamp collection!
Kim: Masking is one of those terms in stamping that I consider a little overwhelming, too. After doing a little experimenting, I wanted to share a quick and easy way for you to give masking a try. • Trim a repositionable note into a rectangle. Be sure not to trim off the sticky edge! • Affix the note to the center of your card leaving a generous portion of the card exposed. • Stamp all over the card edges including where the repositionable note is placed. • Remove the note and stamp your sentiment in the clear space. Instant stamped border!

Get Inspired Delicious Inspiration
Susan R.
Lift the lid of a box of chocolates and indulge in sweet chocolaty satisfaction. Not only are the chocolates themselves pretty, the presentation is divine. Designer Jennifer Rzasa drew inspiration from the colors and contents of this scrumptious box of chocolate caramels. Why not use your favorite sweet treat as inspiration for your next paper-crafted project?
OPEL
You Deserve a Treat Card Designer: Jennifer Rzasa
Jennifer used the chocolate theme and the color of the box to inspire this card that would be perfect to give to a good friend! I love how she suggested the outline of a traditional heart box in red to make it even more appropriate for Valentine’s Day.
