Roree was able to make quick work out of six matching cards by punching the same scallop shape for each one.

A quick and easy time saver because you do not have to stack multiple cutting plates and hand crank the machine. Nice, compact size! It doesn’t take up much space in your work area.

The smaller punch templates (2” and under) are perfect for making cards (and a great way to use up leftover scraps). The embossing feature is an added bonus. All you have to do is transfer the punch template and punched piece from the punching envelope to the embossing envelope, place it back in the machine, press the button, and voila—instant embossing! You have the option to use batteries (great for taking to crops) or an AC adapter to power the machine. It comes with a nice selection of six basic shapes, great for many different types of cards and paper projects. Spellbinders offers a wide variety of punch templates to fit the Presto Punch, ranging in size from 5/8” to 2”. designer notebook pump and paint BY V I C K I B O U T I N Bottled spray inks and paints are all the rage and are one of the quickest ways to add colour to many different types of surfaces. Vicki has some fantastic tricks and tips for using this versatile product. There are so many different brands of spray inks and paints to choose from and they come in a rainbow of colours! Each one has its own special qualities, including sparkling, chalk and matte finishes. Some are opaque or translucent, while others offer a hint of colour. Here are a few ways I like to use these fun sprays.

To stamp with spray ink, pump several times onto a non-porous surface (like a craft mat), then press a stamp into the ink and stamp the image onto your project. This technique works best with bold stamp images. hope tag

easy, detailed, expert Whatever level of difficulty appeals to you, our easy, detailed, expert column has fantastic elements to try today!

by L I SA D I C K I N SO N

I

can vividly remember my fi rst day of kindergarten—dressed in a corduroy dress and knee socks, holding a new lunchbox—and my dad taking photos of me to commemorate the day. Every fall thereafter (for the next 12 years!) he took “First Day of School” photos of

me and my brother. Wanting to continue that tradition with my own children, I’ve snapped similar photos every autumn. I love documenting the changes in my children each year, and back to school layouts are some of my favourite pages to create!

supplies PATTERNED PAPER, Crate Paper, Pink Paislee, The Girls’ Paperie; CHIPBOARD, Bella Blvd; LETTER STICKERS, BasicGrey; STICKERS, Sassafras; BRADS, SEI; PAPER PUNCH, Fiskars; ADHESIVE, Creative Memories

For my easy layout, I created a simple base for my photos by layering 12-inch strips of patterned paper across the middle of the kraft cardstock. I chose patterns that not only reflected a school theme (numbers, graph paper, and grids), but also complemented the coloursh in my photos (greens, yellows and corals). To keep things interesting, I added a few textural layers to the patterned paper strips—cardstock border stickers, brads, and a paper-punched edge. The block of journaling was printed directly on my cardstock background and topped off with a chipboard and letter sticker title.

For my detailed layout, I used a grid of circles to serve as the framework for my page design. I cut ten 2½” circles from various patterned papers and spaced them equally in the center of my page. I treated each circle as a minicanvas, adorning each with a variety of embellishments, including punches, stickers, brads, buttons and stitching. The school theme is repeated in several of the circles with ABCs, the Periodic Table, numbers, and graph paper patterns. I also used some of the circles to add small details about my layout—the title, the date, and the intials of my children. supplies PATTERNED PAPER, October Afternoon, Lily Bee Design, Crate Paper, Jillibean Soup, The Girls’ Paperie, Studio Calico, Sassafras; CHIPBOARD, The Girls’ Paperie; LETTER STICKERS, BasicGrey; STICKERS, Sassafras, October Afternoon; BRADS, The Girls’ Paperie; BUTTONS, Pebbles; PAPER PUNCHES, Creative Memories, EK Success; ADHESIVE, Creative Memories

For my expert layout, I incorporated one of my favourite techniques—misting over a mask. I created a starburst mask by cutting that shape from a piece of cardstock with my die cut machine. I then held it over the background cardstock and misted with charcoal ink to form the five large circles across the page. To sharpen the edges of the starbursts, I traced over them with a black pen. I then fi lled each starburst with a circle of patterned paper, topping them off with die cuts, stickers, borders, buttons and brads in similar colors. A few strips of journaling completed this page. supplies PATTERNED PAPER, Studio Calico, Crate Paper, Lily Bee Designs, Jillibean Soup; LETTER STICKERS, BasicGrey; STICKERS, Crate Paper, Sassafras, October Afternoon; INK, Maya Road, Jenni Bowlin Studio; BRADS, The Girls’ Paperie; BUTTONS, Pebbles; TWINE, Jillibean Soup; STAPLES, Tim Holtz; PAPER PUNCHES, PEN, ADHESIVE, Creative Memories

photography for today’s scrapper: How Do I? When Would I? Why Should I? BY K AT H Y T H O M P SO N Capture your best authentic, candid photo with these great tips from our shutterbug friend, Kathy.

D

o you ever look at a picture and think, “Ok, it’s good technically, but something’s missing?” If so, it could be

that the composition of your photo is somehow a little off. As with any artistic endeavour, there are suggested guidelines for photography composition. Which guidelines you use and when you decide to follow them is a personal choice. However, there is no question that good composition can complete an already strong photograph. The next time you’re behind the lens, give a quick thought to some of these basic composition guidelines and see if you can incorporate them into your photos.

Let’s begin with the rule of thirds. This one is easy and you probably hear it mentioned frequently—simply divide your photo visually into thirds. Your subject or focal point should be positioned along one of the ‘thirds’ lines, either a horizontal or vertical one, or better yet, any point where the two lines meet. Our natural instinct is usually to center everything we shoot, so think about this one as you compose or crop your shots.

sisters & brothers There is probably no greater bond in friendship than that of a sister and brother and, despite a five-year age difference, it is true of Stephanie’s two children, Caitlyn and Ryan. To

emphasize the theme of her page, Stephanie incorporated various phrase stamps into her layout. She stamped a repeated subtitle below her die cut title at the top, which partially rests on two offset half circles. She also created a thin, custom border to dress up the bottom of her journaling block, which is interrupted to the right by another stamped sentiment and a die cut butterfly. Both of these stamping techniques are subdued yet add another design element to the layout without overwhelming the photos.

Stephanie found a journaling font that matched the stamp font she used for her repeated subtitle, adding a cohesive element to her well-designed page.

With the glass removed from the frame, Davinie had a bit of extra depth to work with inside the frame. She layered the green hills on the bottom of the frame by adhering the top most layer with foam adhesive (pop dots).

Davinie created this darling altered frame to celebrate her daughter, Morgan’s friendship with her cousin, Raegan, who she calls her “bestie.” After creating the hills, sky and clouds on the background of the frame, Davinie positioned eye hole screws on the left and right inside edges of the frame, where she suspended a thin wire. From that wire, she hung embellished banners and photos of Morgan and Raegan from tiny clothespins. She also propped an adorable pink bird above their photos for some added whimsy. “The wonderful thing about a frame like this,” says Davinie, “is that you can swap out the photos whenever you’d like.”

life-long friends There are just some things you never outgrow, as Becky humorously

confesses on this page about herself and her best friend, Stephanie. To create the two-tone faux frame on her page, she trimmed a 10” square of scrap paper and temporarily placed it in the center of the yellow background paper. Becky then sprayed white ink around all four sides and removed the scrap paper after it dried. Double rows of handstitching, placed slightly askew, finishes off this quirky, fun page.

Loads of photos (even the bad ones!), a trio of artists and three fantastic results! BY B E C K Y F L E C K

I

n this age of digital photography, it is not unusual for us to take hundreds of photographs at an event. I recently

attended a little league baseball game and amassed a collection of more than 200 action photos in one afternoon! Now granted, not every single photo was worthy of scrapbooking, hence the beauty of the “delete” button. But before you get trigger happy and trash the blurred, partial-headcut-off, out-of-focus photos in the batch, consider using them on a multi-photo page. They may be less-than-perfect, but they still have a story to tell!

Stephanie’s sketch Although her photos were a bit over-exposed and taken on too low of an ISO setting (not to mention the chandelier growing out of her son’s head on the bottom photo!), Stephanie gave equal weight to all three photos to compensate for the imperfections. One read of her amusing journaling and you’ll understand why recording the memories of that fun evening was much more important than the quality of the photos.

The hand-stitched orange pumpkin tucked behind Stephanie’s multi-layered title is a wonderful foundation to a humorous title and a well-designed page.

from the heart journal your authentic life (part 3) by B E C K Y F L E C K

Everyday moments are fleeting, but recording them in your albums will show your family one very important thing: you lived

n the fi rst two segments of this series, we covered methods to share honest, heartfelt journaling and how to write an engaging story from an event or occasion. What about the happenings of your everyday life? Your days are fi lled with ordinary routines—at home, on

scrap the unconventional The experiences that make up a day in your life can run the gamut from ordinary and predictable, to something unexpected, to a day that is over-the-top exciting. It would be all but impossible to scrap every memory, not to mention the extra room you would need to add to your home just to house the albums! To help you decide what to scrapbook about your everyday life, start by choosing a random week and think about what happened in those seven days that really stood out for you. What memory made its mark on your heart? What instantly brought a smile to your face? What happened that you never want to forget? The start of first grade is a very important event in any child’s life, as it signifies the start of 12 years of school. Jennifer created this well-designed double page layout of her son, Dominic’s first day of first grade.

There’s no mistaking the back-to-school theme of Heidi’s layout, as evidenced by the row of apples across the bottom and one adorable boy marching off to school with his backpack in tow. A kraft envelope, tucked in with the photos, holds Heidi’s heartfelt journaling.

Laina’s son’s football season as a JV player is welldocumented on this sports-themed page, complete with action shots, candid photos and a ticket stub from one of his games. Laina’s blocking technique was the perfect choice to make eig ht photos work together so nicely.

A large, handstitched pumpkin rests on the base of Lori’s layout, serving as the backdrop to a row of hilarious photos of her son in a pumpkin patch. One read of the title will have you searching for the journaling to discover what, exactly, Mr. Silly Pants’ talent is!

A row of action photos of Frances’ children romping in the fall leaves are the focus of this beautiful, seasonal layout. Strips of patterned paper bring a nice punch of colour to the page, and a trio of whimsical die cuts make perfect embellishments.

Nothing beats an adorable toddler spying a pumpkin in a pumpkin patch, and this page stole our editor’s heart. From the warm, country colours and fabric yo-yos to mom’s heartfelt journaling and candid photos, this layout captures the true essence of autumn and all that it offers.

Across a three row grid of squares, Jamie blended a seasonal mix of patterned papers and photos of her beautiful daug hter on a fall day. She chose designs that did not overwhelm her photos, along with small embellishments that reinforced the theme of her page.

A big life change can often be difficult for children, but Christa captured her relief about her daug hters’ positive adjustment in heartfelt journaling. Cheerful embellishments, scattered about her page, give it a lig ht, carefree feel.
