Nothing says “beach” like a bright, cheerful sun! Kimber’s hand-pieced rays are the highlight of her album cover, composed of strips of yellow cardstock and black pen details that really make it pop.

Kimber McGray When I saw the 6”x9” kraft file folders in this kit, I knew right away they would make a wonderful, unique mini album! I assigned a subject to each folder about my family’s vacation to Hilton Head last summer. After embellishing each section, I stacked the folders together, punched three holes in each, and bound them on key rings.

Sheri Reguly I loved the kraft fi le folders in this kit and thought one of them, opened and laying flat, would make a great neutral base for my photos and title. I used a band of the colourful striped paper across the middle of my page to provide natural direction to both my focal photos and journaling.

machine-cut titles With so many affordable die cutting machines available, long gone are
the days of fussy cutting titles with a craft knife. Today’s die cutters produce flawless shapes, letters and numbers cut from many types of materials such as cardstock, transparency film, vinyl and fabric, just to name a few. Kelly die cut her cardstock title from two cartridge fonts, scaling one a bit larger than the other, then neatly stacked them together.
The fluffy blue and white clouds across the top of Kelly’s layout get a nice boost with the help of a few strategically-placed foam pop dots.

Stamped titles are a quick and easy way to convey a message, particularly on handmade cards. With so many ink colours to choose from, coordinating a
sentiment with the rest of your design is a snap. If you are unsure where you want to position your stamped title, first try stamping it on a scrap of vellum or leftover transparency. Not only will this tip give you a chance to practice stamping your title, but with the transparent scrap you can move the piece around your project until you are happy with the position before you commit to its final location. Marla found this trick especially helpful before stamping between the two bicycle tires.
By drawing a simple horizontal line on her background paper, Marla’s bicycle built for two became grounded and created a home for her sentiment below.

computer-generated titles One of the many benefits of creating a title on your computer is that you are guaranteed an exact colour match to your layout,
not to mention the hundreds of fonts you have to choose from! Marla mixed two of her favourite fonts together to create a two-part title, both of which tie into her detailed journaling.
On a separate piece of white cardstock, Marla created her computergenerated title to look like a warning sign, then crossed out the word “not” with a black marker.

objects for letters An object makes a great substitute for a letter in a title. On Davinie’s
refreshing layout, she swapped out one of the letter o’s in the word “pool” with a pretty, yellow button that rests on a die cut sun. There are even instances when the object doesn’t necessarily have to match the shape of the letter you are substituting. For example, let’s say you are spelling the word “teacher.” You could replace the letter “a” with an apple, and although the apple does not look like the shape of the letter “a,” there is no mistaking the word you are spelling out. Here are more ideas to substitute objects: •
A brad, gem, flower or other round embellishment for the letter O
•
A star, party hat, leaf or triangle for the letter A
•
The number 3 (flipped around) for the letter E
•
A birthday candle, ribbon, twine, trim

Vicki has some fantastic tricks and tips to make your next project rise to the occasion. Oh, and you’ll need some aluminum foil, too! The play of light and shadow that an embossed surface creates always appeals to me. Whether it be the added dimension of a stamped and embossed image, or the clean and crisp appeal of a de-bossed motif, I love the texture that embossing produces. Here are a few fun embossing techniques you can give a try!
For a fun twist on embossing , try your hand at creating a raised pattern with white glue or a heat gun glue. ant to ruin a potentially great photograph? Point your camera at your subject and tell them to say, “Cheese!”
Although there is always a place for a beautifully composed portrait shot, it’s the candids that usually get my heart pounding—that moment when I know I’ve captured something special, when I’ve truly seized the essence of my subject. Ironically, this type of shot can also be the most challenging to capture. Most of us are conditioned from an early age to “pose” for the camera. How many two-year-olds do you know who suddenly develop a very cheesy grin as soon as someone pulls out a camera? It happens to the best of us! So what can you do to capture those often fleeting, but incredibly authentic moments? A lot! Here are some tips to get you started.

I haven’t come across many subjects beyond the age of six who love having their photo taken, so invest your time in the shoot and you’ll walk away with priceless and fleeting moments that the camera has captured forever!

t the heart of our family, there is a popular summer activity that is greatly enjoyed and tried each and every year—gardening. The person to manage it all is usually

son, Ethan. When he does, I’m there to take a photo or two! I love watching the two of them share in our family’s long standing summer tradition of gardening.

For my easy layout, I decided to make the center area of the page the focal point. I was able to do this by using a neutral coloured background and then keeping most of my papers and embellishments within the confines of a large, rectangular area. Small areas like this are very easy to embellish. I fi rst applied a contrasting selection of warm and cool patterned papers. From there, I located a central spot for two chipboard embellishments that I layered individually before applying them to the layout. Finally, a duo-font title was added, along with a handwritten journaling spot.

For my detailed layout, I stayed with the same light coloured background, but expanded the layout’s overall design area with a sunny border of yellow checked paper. Contained within it is a classic style floral pattern in an inviting, warm hue of grey. A triadic arrangement of petite, clustered embellishments frame my photos, which are divided by a strip of handwritten journaling. For my expert layout, colour and details prevail. I balanced a strong yellow background with its counterpart, a soft blue. For high contrast, I placed my photos in the yellow area, with my embellishments drifting along the bottom third of the page. From fantastic action photos, to posed portraits, to a handful of wonderful candid shots, large assortments of photos like these can often be overwhelming, leaving even the most seasoned scrapbooker wondering, “Which photos should I scrap?” Here’s a great tip from Vicki to help you pare down a looming pile of pictures. “When I have more photos than I can possibly fit on a layout, I start by choosing my most favourite of the bunch. I call this photo my ‘hero,’ the one shot that, for me, stands out from all the rest—the one that makes me smile and brings back all the memories of that day,” Vicki says. “I zoom in, crop, and print the hero as the largest photo on my page. After choosing the rest of the photos for my page, I print them smaller and frame them around the hero. These smaller photos are kind of like a supporting cast for my journaling and help to emphasize the story of my page.”

ready and “action!” When you are lucky enough to capture that perfect shot—the one
where time stands still—there is no doubt you will want that photo to shine on your layout. Kelly scored a touchdown in that department, capturing not one, but two great shots of her young son in flawless gridiron form. For these fantastic photos to take center stage on her layout, she chose tight, geometric patterns in colours and tones that complimented her photos, but did not overwhelm them. Kelly kept her embellishments small and clustered together in a classic triadic arrangement. Kelly also integrated a bold, one-word title into her journaling, which she capped off, top and bottom, with die cut brackets. A subtle, yet confident, title like this is a perfect choice to reinforce an impressive pair of photographs.

hey banner, banner! Banners are a great embellishment for all types of pages and projects, but the
pennant-style title streamer that rests on the top, left corner of Summer’s page could not be a more perfect choice for her sporty, baseball theme. She strung the pre-grommeted canvas flags onto a double length of red and white baker’s twine, adding bright red letter stickers to spell out her title. That red repeats again as a subtitle in the lower left corner, and a third time in a photo in the bottom right corner, creating a colourful triple play on this well-designed page. Summer also expanded her 2009 Champs layout and created a double-page version of this same user-friendly, nine-square format. 1. Trim the Jillibean Sugar Picks packaging to form the flower shape (trim off the display tag). The base will measure approximately 6"x6".
2. Trim a 7.75"x1" piece of striped paper and glue it to the bottom of the card. Glue a 7.75" piece of green ric rac over the seam. 3. Trim 1.5", 2" and 2.5" circles from three different patterns. Adhere the circles to the card as shown, trimming away excess. 4. Print "hey" onto a journal tag and adhere to the top, right edge of card as shown. 5. Trim stems and leaves from green patterned paper. 6. Create two flowers by layering corrugated flowers, paper flowers, buttons and brads. 7. Attach the stems, leaves and flowers to the card as shown. 8. Sewn on buttons.

Adhere a large, round orange/yellow sticker over the top of the orange circle. 7. Tie a length of green ribbon into a bow and glue it to the bottom, left corner.

I love creating mini albums! They come together quickly and I feel such a sense of accomplishment when I’ve completed one. For my vacation album, I chose this kraft brag book made by Fancy Pants. It measures 7”x9” and includes 50 scrapping/journaling pages, 15 photo sleeves, and 15 pocket pages. I really liked how I was able to mix and match the different types of pages and use just what I needed to create my own customized album. The journal pages were pre-printed with beautiful corner flourishes and notebook style lines, making my handwritten journaling a breeze. I added a few die cuts, ribbon, buttons and sewing details for added dimension.
Instead of using one of the photo sleeves for a second picture, I created a date and title page and slipped it inside the top sleeve
The pocket page was a perfect place for me to tuck away admission stubs, photo booth momentos and game tickets from our vacation.

he heart of scrapbooking is to record the events and history of your life. By default, this makes you your family’s chief historian. Documenting the who, what, where, when and why doesn’t have to be a tedious chore or a statement of the obvious. In fact, the people
who will be reading your journaling in the future likely weren’t there with you, so take time to paint a vivid, interesting story and invite them along to relive the memory.
How Did You Feel? There is no mistaking that Nic’s beautiful layout is about a wedding, and a stunning seaside wedding at that. But one read of her journaling and you will see that she describes, in heartfelt detail, exactly how she felt the day her little brother was married. From her daughter participating as a flower girl, to her son reciting a prayer, Nic shares intimate, emotional details that might not otherwise be evident from looking at the page. She even included a brief conversation softly whispered between her and her husband. Event scrapbooking is a vital part of recording your family history, but without the story your future generations will never know why the photos and events were important to you in the fi rst place. Remember, every photo has a story and I encourage you to tell it.

the die cut clouds that rest on top of it. I also cut fabric into narrow strips with pinking shears and gathered them with a loose running stitch to form layered posies. I crowned each flower with a decorative brad and tucked small fabric leaves behind the folds. Just like with paper, the creative possibilities with fabric are truly endless!
