Greta Hammond To tame the bright and vivid prints of the patterned papers, Greta varied the size and shape of each strip, placed them horizontally across her page, and broke them up with bands of solid colours. got scraps? turn leftover scraps into BEAUTIFUL cards! Always a reader favourite, our “Got Scraps” article shows quick and practical ways to use up your scrap stash. And, as an added bonus, we’ve included handy card sketches from PageMaps.

instructions 1. Cut dark blue cardstock to 4.25” wide x 11” long. Fold it in half to create a card base, with the opening at the bottom. 2. Paint a scrap of white cardstock with blue acrylic paint. Let dry. Punch out seven 1” circles with a paper punch and adhere them to the top of the card as shown. 3. Cut the stripe paper 4” x .75”. Attach it to the top of the card, covering the bottom half of the seven circles. 4. Cut a piece of green script paper 4” x 4”. Attach it to the card under the striped paper. 5. Wrap the front of the card with fl oss and tie it off in a knot as shown. 6. Adhere a large polka dot button, chipboard snowfl ake, green button and “BRR” sticker. 7. Run vellum through a printer to print sentiment. Attach the vellum to the card as shown. 8. Punch a snowfl ake from the green and blue dot paper. Cut it in half and attach each half to edges of card as shown. Adhere pearls in the center.

Leftover patterned paper, stacked one on top of the other, created a beautiful base for Danielle’s wintery card. The snowcapped scallops are the crowning touch, and isn’t that green button just beautiful?

instructions 1. Make a 4.25”x5.5” card from kraft card stock. Ink the edges with brown chalk ink. 2. Trim a 4”x5.25” cream piece from Snow Day and adhere it to the center of the card stock. 3. Trim a kraft Tag to 4” long, ink edges. Tie red baker’s twine through the top of the tag. Adhere to the front of the card. 4. Adhere a Joy die cut from Christmas Chestnut Soup to the front of the tag. 5. Adhere a chipboard snowfl ake from Tinsel and Twig to the front of the tag.

Kimber layered leftover die-cuts onto a tag, topped off with multiple loops of baker’s twine. The crepe paper and tinsel center of the chipboard snowﬂake gives the card a lot of homespun appeal.

1. Make the base of the card out of brown cardstock to a fi nished size of 4.25” x 5.5”. 2. Cut journal card to fit as shown. Ink edges. Adhere to card leaving the left side open to add twine. 3. Slip in twine and wrap. Finish by threading in a button and tying a bow on top. Adhere down rest of journal card to secure twine . 4. Cut a strip of pink cardstock. Cut a “v” into left end. Ink edges and adhere letter stickers. Adhere to card.

One half of a journaling card, leftover from another project, made a great background element for Greta’s card. A pink banner, which holds a sentiment spelled out from orphan letter stickers, is a nice contrast to the brown and aqua colours.

cuts, all of them loaded with a host of shapes and designs. Although they are terriﬁc as is, here are some simple techniques to dress them up and add a personalized touch. •

Highlight the curves and contours of an image with hand stitching

For added interest, accent images with self-adhesive rhinestones, pearls, brads or buttons

•

Create a 3D effect by simply adhering die-cuts to a layout or card using dimensional adhesive such as foam dots

•

Layer multiple die-cuts to tell a story just like I did on my “Dear Santa” card

texturize die-cut chipboard Summer added texture to her kitchen chipboard shapes by lightly misting them with water, placing them in an embossing folder, and

running the wet pieces through a die-cut machine (such as a Cuttlebug). Once dry, she then painted the pieces to match her layout.

To enhance the raised embossing, Summer chose a darker shade of red ink and ran the pad over the top of each piece to highlight the bubble dots. This same technique works great with paper die-cuts by simply skipping the water misting step.

a baker’s dozen Have you ever bought a set of multiple die-cuts because you really

loved one image, only to ﬁnd yourself wondering how you would use the rest of the package? Try Kimber’s approach and use an entire set on one layout. With a package of pre-printed tags, Kimber created an eye-catching background image. By adding simple touches, like twine and scalloped edges, she uniﬁed the die-cuts and produced an “easy to scraplift” page.

Look closely at the poinsettia and cup of cocoa. For added dimension, Kimber trimmed out these shapes from duplicate tags and attached them to the matching tag with foam dots. Her journaling tag stands out, too, with the help of a dark green cardstock mat.

mix and match Like most of us, you probably have a stash of leftover die-cuts from a variety of manufacturers. Mix an assortment of shapes

from your surplus, as I have done for this frame, to create a one-of-a-kind project. I accented the chipboard bells with glitter glue and machinestitched a frame around a piece of die-cut notebook paper.

Summer did not remove the release paper on the back of the self-adhesive chipboard bells, so they could hang freely from the center of the ﬂower.

Capturing Outdoor White As much as we often love to hate winter, a crisp, bright, sparkly winter day is hard to beat! That is, until you try to take photos and capture all of that pure whiteness. Why is it that when your eye sees clean and sparkly and white, your camera captures dull and grey? That’s because your camera is just trying to help you out!

Cameras are simply computers, doing their very best to capture the “average.” Your camera takes a reading of the average light in a scene, and when that scene consists of a lot of very white and highly reﬂective snow, it assumes there is a lot more light than there actually is, so it tries to average things out for you. The result is often dingy, underexposed pictures.

now in Kentucky is a pretty rare event, so a significant snowfall is always a cause for celebration, especially if it cancels school for the day! Snow days are fi lled with sledding, snowball fights and snow angels. And such a rare occurrence has to

For my easy layout, I maintained simple, linear lines so the focus would be on the fun, bright photos of my boys. To further emphasize the photos, I matted them with bright red paper and placed them within the visual triangle created between the lower left snowflake, the upper snowflake and the die-cut book label. I added a few punched shapes and brads for added interest and to reinforce the theme of the page.

For my detailed layout, I wanted to add more texture and dimension. I began by embossing my title block, then layered die-cut elements in the title with pop dots and chipboard shapes, like the “o” in snow and the snowflake die-cuts in “men.” I highlighted the polka dot paper with a few well-placed glazed brads to accent it. For my expert layout, I really kicked it up in the details. I rearranged the photos, enlarging one of them for a more energetic look. I curved the edge of the white paper to rest my title on, replacing the “O” with a chipboard snowman. Snowflakes on circles crown the top of the two square photos, and smaller punched snowflakes scatter about the page. winter greetings The snow is flying, hearts are giving, stockings are hung, and love is in the air. This terrific collection of seasonal greetings is sure to inspire your next card-making endeavour all throughout the winter season.

snowman by RO R E E R U M PH 1. Trim a 10.5" x 4.25" piece of green cardstock; fold it in half with the opening at the bottom. 2. Trim a 4.25" x 5.5" piece of pattern paper and sew it to the front of the card. Apply the “joy” sticker to the top, right corner and zig-zag stitch it in place. 3. Stamp a noteblock image onto a 3" x 5.25" piece of light green cardstock; adhere the panel to the left side of the card as shown. 4. Wrap a piece of ribbon around the bottom edge off the card and tie a bow. 5. Hand cut a 1.75" and a 2.5" white circle; trim out a scarf in three pieces as shown; an orange nose, pattern mittens and brown stick arms. 6. Machine sew around the white circles. Distress all edges with a file. 7. Assemble the snowman to the right side of the card as shown. Add two black brads for eyes. 8. 1. Trim a 10.5" x 4.25" piece of red cardstock; fold it in half with the opening at the bottom.

Apply the chipboard “Happy Holidays” to the large green circle. something special The word “special” can be defined as something that is just a little bit unique and that is made with a specific purpose in mind. This issue’s project meets those criteria and will undoubtedly be treasured for years to come.

he romantic beauty of Pink Paislee’s new collection, Sweetness, was the inspirational energy behind my desktop calendar. As soon as I spotted the Flip Notes, a calendar instantly came to mind. Even the tear strip from a 12x12 sheet of

paper was too pretty not to use and is the red strip that says, “Sweetness • Love Blooms” right below the calendar. Look closely at my photo and you will see that I also created the pinwheel that my daughter is holding, using one sheet of paper and a metal badge accent in the center. The Sweetness collection is a bouquet of scrapbooking love in bloom!
