If you read my columns you know I have had my “bestie” for 56 years now. We had no cell phones, no internet, nothing but the shear desire to remain connected the first 30+ years of our friendship. Navigating through life with a best friend is like having a compass with you at all times. When you start veering off the path, your compass kicks in and gets you back on track. I feel bad for young people growing up in this “throw away” world. Sure, we have been unnecessarily tossing material things away for decades, but in past 2 years people have been throwing away friendships in the name of safety. People have allowed the media to pressure them into believing that people they once loved are now “bad people” because they questioned what they were being told. The death toll of lost friendships and broken families is continuing to rise, even as the pandemic subsides. Things are never quite as scary when you’ve got a best friend. - Bill Watterson Sue and I made a pac years ago that nothing would destroy our friendship, not men or kids or other friends. We have stuck to it all these years and have had to make life decisions based on the importance of our friendship. We have left other friends behind because they were poisoning our friendship. Who would ever think we would have to navigate through a pandemic together? But we did. Did we agree on everything that was happening and why? Absolutely not. We agreed to disagree 1000 times. When her father died last summer, I was there. We walked together through the maze of feelings; her fractured relationship with him, meeting family at his grave side that she had never met before. She would do the same for me, it’s what we do. A true blue friend is life’s biggest treasure, stick by them no matter what. -Me

Six decades of friendship, countless losses, huge celebrations, stupid mistakes, crying, laughing together all because we stuck it out. I wish I had as much success in my marriages...but that’s an entirely different column. If you have fractured a friendship, know that you have the glue. You can fix anything you want to, you just have to want to enough. I cannot imagine the hurt of breaking a true blue friendship, especially now. The world is a scary place right now, the last thing you need is broken bonds with the people who have loved you through thick and thin. Turn off the TV, get off of FB and call your friends and family. In 1 single moment it can be too late. Never take for granted that there will be a tomorrow, none of us get out of here alive. That’s not NORMAL! Differentiating “Normal” from “Average” Regrettably, these terms are very often used in place of one another incorrectly. One of the areas this mistake is most often seen involves the day-to-day functions of our bodies. Science has established what it calls normal figures for our physiologic functions. These include heart rate, blood pressure, cholesterol, temperature and everything else you can think of. However, what we are really looking at is not what is normal, but what is average? The average value is something that is easy for us to know – all it takes is a simple mathematical equation to figure it out. NORMAL on the other hand is something that is not as easy to figure out. In chiropractic, we say that we are ever changing, constantly adapting, selfregulating and self-healing organisms. We say that normal is something that can only be determined by the Innate Intelligence of the body. This is an important distinction to understand. Even though the average heart rate of an adult is 72 beats per minute, it may not be what is necessary for an individual at any given time. In other words, if a person’s body needs to increase its heart rate for some reason, it may not be average, but it can most certainly be normal! Is it normal for a healthy baby to have a runny nose, fluid in its ears and a fever? Is it normal for a healthy person to vomit and have diarrhea?

It is time to invest in your health today! Aren’t you worth it? 1. A healthy baby who is teething can have a runny nose, fluid in its ears and a fever. These are all normal parts of the process of cutting teeth. 2. A healthy person who eats a bad piece of fish will vomit and get diarrhea as a way of healthfully expelling toxins. 3. A person who has injured his neck will have muscle spasm to protect the area from further damage while it heals. He will also have inflammation to begin what is called the healing cascade. And, his body will produce pain so that he knows to be careful until all is well. Chiropractic recognizes that normal is a state that can only be determined by your body’s Innate Intelligence. We do not try to make you conform to a standard level of function. Rather, we accept you for the unique individual that you are and we rejoice in the knowledge that when you have a clear nerve system and a healthy lifestyle, your body will do whatever is necessary to progressively and consistently grow you toward the full expression of your purpose and potential in life.

Are Pay on Death Accounts Right for You? A payable-on-death account, also called a “POD” account, is a common way to keep bank and investment accounts out of probate, the court-supervised process that oversees distributing a deceased person’s property. Most people want to avoid having their estate going through probate because their heirs will receive the inheritance faster, privately, and at lower cost. Is a POD account an appropriate solution for your needs? Let’s look at what POD accounts do and how they fit into the overall picture.

POD Accounts: The Nuts and Bolts A POD designation can be set up for savings, checking, certificates of deposit, U.S. savings bonds, and investment accounts. Upon the death of you, the account holder, the funds in the account pass directly to your named beneficiary. Setting up a POD account is usually very easy. Typically, the financial company that holds the account has you complete and sign a document designating your beneficiary or beneficiaries. You can easily change beneficiaries as circumstances change. After your death, your beneficiary can claim the money in a fairly simple process. Typically, the beneficiary would need to provide a death certificate and driver’s license, then complete a claim form provided by the financial institution. That’s it!

Trusts: A Comprehensive Solution A more comprehensive solution would be to establish a living trust. Just like a POD account, a properly funded trust avoids probate and is private. A living trust can provide substantial flexibility, incorporate alternate beneficiaries, and provide long-term asset protection for you and your beneficiaries, protecting your assets against lawsuits, judgments, divorce, and bankruptcy courts. Most importantly, a living trust can provide you with greater security that your assets will be properly managed in accordance with your wishes. Trusts provide all the benefits and peace of mind of a POD account without any of the downsides.

Hard Work The other morning I walked over to my friends house. As I got to her steps I noticed that her tulips and hyacinths were starting to sprout. Their bright lime green leaves reaching towards the sun. Creeping up from behind the grey rocks. Pushing away the dark soil. These little fragile buds fighting their way from deep in the earth to find the sun, to find growth and to find new life. The last month has been somewhat of a rodeo ride for me. Hanging on to a bucking bronco not knowing when I would be bucked off. Digging my heels in I grasped on to my can do attitude and prayed it would keep me on the ride a little longer. Eventually I was thrown. My hands let go and I landed hard and a bit tattered and worn. I slowly stood up. In that moment I knew it wasn’t going to be easy. Hard work is never easy. I shook off the dust that had covered me, making it hard to see. I took a few steps forward and decided to do the work. I thought about those little flowers. Working so diligently pushing their way through the earth not knowing what to expect on the other side. My golly, if those little buggers can do it surely I could give it a shot. It takes work to not do something too. To allow it to absorb you. To give up or worse, wishing that you had tried and finding it is too late. For me the ride was out of my control. I had to get on. Not knowing when it would end. It was life. Life is sometimes like that. You have to get on and sometimes you just have to hold on for dear life and wish for the best. If I have learned anything over the years it has been to put in the work, do the time and don’t give up! The singer Eric Church said it perfectly in his song Some of It...

“Some of it you learn the hard way and some of it you read on a page. Some of it comes from heartbreak, most of it comes with age. And none of it ever comes easy.” I encourage you to push through your hard work. You will never know if you don’t try. As always I wish you peace, joy and plenty of hard work! How can you cope with market volatility? These are unsettling times for investors. Even before the geopolitical crisis involving Russia and Ukraine, the financial markets were facing headwinds due to higher inflation, the anticipation of rising interest rates and the continuing effects of the pandemic. As an individual investor, should you take some type of action? It’s helpful to put today’s headlines in perspective. While the Federal Reserve probably will raise interest rates, they are doing so from a point where these rates were at or near historic lows, so the new, higher rates may not drastically deter businesses from borrowing to expand their operations. Also, higher interest rates can be good for savers, who can earn more on their savings. As for inflation, many economists expect it to cool down in the second half of 2022 as supply chain bottlenecks start to clear. And the pandemic’s effects, both on our health and on our daily lives, may be fading, though, of course, we all should be cautious when it comes to making predictions about COVID-19. The Ukraine situation is one more unpredictable event – and one thing that financial markets dislike is uncertainty. Russia is one of the world’s largest oil producers, so a conflict that could affect oil prices can have a ripple effect on many market sectors. Until the state of affairs in Ukraine calms down, market volatility may continue. Even in this context of uncertainty, though, investors shouldn’t lose sight of other factors that can affect the investment climate. The U.S. economy has been growing at a fast clip, and corporate earnings – usually a key driver of stock prices – have also been strong.

• Take a break from checking your statements. When the market goes through a rough patch, you may find yourself constantly check on how your portfolio is doing. But this can cause stress and lead you to make unwise decisions. If you don’t need this money right now, take a break from looking at your investment statements. • Give yourself time to make investment moves. See if you can wait a certain amount of time – a day, a night or a weekend – before making a significant investment move. This delay can give you time for strong emotions to cool and help you consider whether your decision is in your best interest. • Take steps to protect your long-term investments. If you don’t really need the money right away, you shouldn’t have to worry excessively over the short-term movements of the financial markets. To avoid tapping into your long-term investments, try to build an emergency fund containing several months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a low-risk, easily accessible account. • Get some help. Homemade Meatloaf with Mashed Potatoes For Meatloaf:

For Mashed Potatoes:

1 pound 80% lean ground beef or turkey 1 cup dried breadcrumbs 1/2 cup diced yellow onion 1/2 cup milk 1 large egg, beaten 2 tablespoon ketchup 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon dried parsley leaves 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

5 pounds red potatoes, cut into ½ inch dice 1/2 cube salted butter 5 ounces Boursin Garlic & Herb Gourmet Cheese 2/3 cup heavy cream (you can substitute with half-and-half or whole milk) 1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt 1 teaspoon freshly chopped garlic 1/4 cup finely chopped chives ground pepper

While meatloaf bakes, place potatoes in a large saucepan; add ¾ teaspoon of salt and enough water to cover. Bring to a boil on high heat.

1/4 cup ketchup 2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar (you can substitute white wine vinegar if you don’t have this handy)

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Scrub potatoes. In a large bowl, add the beef, breadcrumbs, onion, milk, egg, 2 tablespoons ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, parsley, ¾ teaspoon salt, garlic powder, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Use your hands to mush and mix these ingredients together until well combined. Add the meat mixture to a loaf pan. Pat the meat down into an even layer. In a small bowl, add brown sugar, vinegar, and 1/4 cup ketchup. Stir to combine these ingredients to make the topping sauce. Pour the topping sauce on top of the meatloaf and spread into an even layer. Bake meatloaf uncovered for 55 minutes. 22 | Your Hometowne

Once potatoes come to a boil, reduce heat to mediumlow and boil gently for 15-20 minutes or until potatoes break apart when pierced with a fork. Drain potatoes. In a large mixing bowl or stand mixer add potatoes, butter, heavy cream, and cheese. Beat until nice and creamy with no lumps present. Stir in salt, garlic, and pepper to taste. If you don’t have a mixer, you can also mash potatoes with a fork. Cover with tinfoil until ready to serve. Let the meatloaf rest for 8-10 minutes before serving. Letting the meatloaf rest prevents it from falling apart. Serve with your favorite vegetable. Inspired by Chefs in the Catskill Mountains

Scotia-Glenville senior finds her passion in a

machine shop “I feel like I was meant to do this – this is one of my talents and I was meant to use it.” So said Scotia-Glenville High School senior Allison Umstadter as she was preparing a lathe – a machining tool used primarily for shaping metal or wood – in the Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical School machining lab.

Umstadter is one of 14 students in the Manufacturing and Machining Technology program that teaches students design and prototype skills, as well as how to troubleshoot design problems and undertake the diagnostics necessary to manufacture a part. Students also learn how to operate everything from drill presses to the 3D printers. She enrolled in the program before the start of her junior year because it intrigued her. That intrigue has grown to love and she will now follow that love to Hudson Valley Community College where she will pursue a degree in the Advanced Manufacturing Program. “I’m very well prepared for a career in manufacturing and to learn more about it because of my experiences at BOCES,” Umstadter said. Indeed, Umstadter is already earning money with her machining skills thanks to a paid work-based learning experience at Greno Industries that was arranged by BOCES administrators. “The people [at Greno] are great and taught me techniques that I can use now and in the future,” she said. On March 24, BH-BL celebrated Founder’s Day 2022 with a dinner and award ceremony. At the annual event, BH-BL recognizes outstanding PTA members and staff who are chosen for this award because of their complete commitment to BH-BL through years of service and notable dedication that goes above and beyond the usual needs of BH-BL students and families. At the dinner, Superintendent McGrath began by recognizing the community’s long history of giving back to the school district, and emphasized that it’s the hard work and involvement of everyone that makes BH-BL what it is today. The very first BH-BL Founder’s Day award was presented in 1939 to teacher Miss Edith Livingston. Edith and all the deserving recipients of this important award over the years are permanently registered in the district’s historical records. McGrath added that he’s proud to add this year’s 10 recipients to BH-BL’s history books.
