The phrase ‘fake news’ sounds too playful, too much like a schoolchild faking illness to get out of a test.
~Robert Frost
November 8th will come and go; I’ll still smile and wave. I hope you still sit at the Thanksgiving table with your loved ones regardless of who they voted for. We have had a couple rough years, it’s time to heal and mend.
My hope for this election is that Americans will come to understand that our political beliefs do not outweigh our commonalities as Americans. We are in this together. We are families, business owners, teachers, elected officials; but we cannot be any of those things if we are not a community first. When I’m driving down the street and see someone tending their flowers or walking their dog, I smile and wave. That’s the type of community we live in.

Turn off the news; live, love and laugh.
Prior to social media the only ones who knew our political leanings were the people who came to Thanksgiving dinner… irony at it’s best. Now we accuse each other of believing fake news, backing up our beliefs with a meme for a puntuated effect. The only ones winning this war between US are media moguls, lobbyists and the people whose pockets are lined with lobbying dollars. If you want to know who is receiving money from whom, go to www.opensecrets.org - it’s real data, no whitewash. It is an eye opener.
Here we go, voting season is right around the corner and the media is awaiting their paychecks. This year’s midterm election spending will surpass all election spending, ever; including all presidential elections. The bombardment has begun, and the media is wringing their greedy little hands. A polarized electorate is the best fund-raising tool ever.

How could you vote for so and so? How can you believe that nonsense? We will point our fingers at each other in utter disgust, appalled by our friends and family members who believe what we do not. We will defend our news source and what we are being told as absolute truth, but the fact of the matter is we have been taught falsehoods our entire lives.
~Joseph Goebbels
We are all guilty of believing what we want to justify our moral supremacy.
“Social media should be like an etcha sketch, read it, but if you move, it goes away.”
~Aesop
“Thinking isn’t agreeing or disagreeing. That’s voting.”
As children we were taught that Christopher Columbus discovered America. Never mind the indigenous people that had lived here for 20,000 years before Columbus landed. We were taught that Thanksgiving was a peaceful gathering of those indigenous people who were already here and the Colonists who “discovered” America. The fact is the Colonial Soldiers had just massacred 700 Pequot Indians, Massachusetts colony governor John Winthrop decided to host a party to celebrate those soldiers. Suffice it to say that the first Thanksgiving was a far cry from peace and unity. We were taught Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves, however; the Emancipation proclamation did not free all slaves, it declared free only those slaves living in states not under Union control.

Prior to the Altamont Fair opening, we volunteers worked at the fair cleaning and dusting for many days. The scene reminded me of worker bees! A volunteer “bonus” was that I had a chance to go through fair buildings without crowds, and take photos at my leisure... which is how I snapped the September front cover of the 1935 Farmall tractor. That tractor model boasts the last year of steel wheels. You’ll find her in front of the Farm Machinery Building next year.

Back to the Car Museum car competition... thank you Tommy Siatkowski for bringing your ‘67 XR7 Cougar up to show. Rare car indeed. And all the other car and truck owners. Of note: the Hennel Family, owners of the Stadium Golf Course, brought a gorgeous ground up restored ‘62 Chevy Impala to show in the Car Museum. The Impala took “Best of Fair” in the Car Museum this year. Congrats!!!
And what a summer it’s been. I tried on some new activities including volunteering at the historic (1893) Altamont Fair which is a unique three county fair representing Schenectady, Albany, and Greene counties. It’s always held in August. I chose to work in the Antique Car Museum with Car Museum Superintendent Rick Miller and the boys. Natural fit for me and the boys loved me, naturally. I also ended up adding a wall exhibit about Shirley “Cha Cha” Muldowney, as her local and international accomplishments were missing in our museum! You know she started out local and blew up to be a superstar of drag racing, don’t you? Some folks visiting the Museum had never heard of “Cha- Cha!” I educated a few for sure. I would love to see Shirley at the Altamont Fair next year! She is available for appearances and is very popular. She was at the Syracuse Nationals this year signing autographs. I decided to contact her. She said her appearance fee is $3,500 plus travel expenses ... so if any of you businesses would like to sponsor her for one day (or more!) next year at the Altamont Fair... let me know. It would be great publicity for you as a sponsor!!!
As I do every year, I entered my photography in the Fine Arts Barn competition. I was pleased to find that I had won a Second Place Ribbon (plus a check!) for my honey bee image. And... for the first time, I entered a “pop-up” culinary competition that required us to bring in our favorite baked beans and accompanying recipe on a certain day of the fair. I was floored to win Second Place with my “Hawaiian King Baked Beans” recipe. Being the creative sort... I added pineapple, almond paste and marshmallows to my beans. Yes, I did.

If you are wondering if you can see a chiropractor with degenerative disc disease the answer is, in most cases, yes! Studies show that loss of motion in any joint for longer than 15 days can cause degeneration. According to one study, 9% of 10 year olds even have degeneration. One of the major causes of this “wear and tear” on the spine is from prolonged repetitive motion— it doesn’t have to be from a big traumatic experience. Degeneration in spinal joints disturbs the biomechanics of the spine, while thinning and degenerative discs may be putting pressure on spinal nerves. Pressure on the nerves can cause pain and interference in the nervous Chiropracticsystem.care
Spine and nervous system stress exists in both children and adults. Children need the benefits of chiropractic care as much as their parents. Chiropractors focus on restoring proper communication from the brain to all parts of the body by improving spinal health. An unhealthy spine correlates to an unhealthy brain and central nervous system. We see people of all ages in our office, from infants to elderly. It is never too late (or too early) to ensure proper spinal health! Call, text or book with us online today to reserve your first visit!
The best way to prevent spinal degeneration from occurring is to have good posture, maintain a healthy weight, exercise, regular chiropractic adjustments, stay hydrated (with water!) and do your best to prevent injuries.
improves joint mobility which, in turn, improves joint mechanics, reduces inflammation and takes the pressure off of spinal nerves. We see a lot of people with degenerative disc disease in our office. While we are not able to reverse this process, we can slow it or even possibly stop it from getting worse. Chiropractic adjustments keep the joints in the spine moving how they should, which stops or slows the degenerative process. Chiropractic care can help with the pain associated with your condition as well.

REGARDING VIOLINS…
As for care, treat it like a human friend. It likes room temperature, and it wants to be above 40% humidity. Dry cold winters, followed by hot, moist summers, as well as other factors, like wood stoves, car trunks (shudder!), et.al, can be

The serious players cares about the following factors in this order:1.) How does it sound? 2.) How does it play (or feel)? 3.) What does it look like?
What makes a good violin? First, we start with a spruce or maple tree, high above the frost-line on a mountain. So high, that when it freezes in the winter, it STAYS FROZEN, which produces tight, even annular rings in the wood, which later, will conduct vibrations, and hence, tone, better.

Good woods sound and last better than poorer materials. In the interior, there should be a dowel (“sound-post”), placed just so, and it will convey the vibrations from the front to the back of the instrument, as well as giving the thin woods strength. Don’t play it if it falls down! Good woods, properly seasoned to reduce moisture content and to give stability, master craftsmanship, and ageing are what makes a desirable instrument.

Adult Guardianships in New York
A person is determined to be incapacitated when the facts show the person is likely to suffer harm because: (1) the person is unable to provide for their personal needs and/or property management; and (2) the person cannot adequately understand and appreciate the nature and consequences of such inability.
Guardianshipmanagement.practice
In New York State, after turning eighteen, a person has legal authority to make decisions for themselves, even where they might be making bad decisions. A Guardianship proceeding asks a Court to alter those individual liberties by appointing and authorizing a substitute to make those decisions – the Guardian. There are two very different types of adult guardianship in New York.
By: Kathleen M. Toombs
Support by written certification of two physicians are required. The physician’s certification may describe the physician’s interaction with the disabled individual, as well as why and how they came to the conclusion that as a result of the disability the person, i) has an impaired ability to understand and appreciate the nature and consequences of decisions, which ii) results in such person being incapable of managing themself and/or their affairs, and iii) that such condition is permanent in nature or likely to continue indefinitely.

The Court will likely appoint an attorney or evaluator to speak with all interested parties and report whether a guardian is in the best interests of the person. While the guardianship will restrict a person’s civil liberties, the powers can be tailored to the needs of the incapacitated person.
Most commonly, this guardianship proceeding is brought for the elderly person who no longer can make good decisions due to an accident or illness and who does not have adequate documents in place appointing a proxy.
The Court system will do a background check of the persons applying to be Guardian and will also appoint an independent evaluator to review the facts and speak to the Petitioner(s) and disabled adult when possible. The evaluator will make a written recommendation as to the perceived best interests of the disabled person.

in New York is substantially different than some other states and is typically seen as a “last resort” for protecting the individual.
A personal appearance with the Judge is usually required. If all is in order, an Order will be made decreeing a Guardian.
2. Incapacitated Adults.
The disabled person may have been born with a disability, or the disability may have developed (prior to age 22) as the result of trauma or disease. Parents or family of a disabled adult who wish to make financial and personal care decisions must petition the Court to be appointed as legal guardian(s).

Scotia, NY driver Mark Mortensen has been racing stock cars at the Fonda Speedway since 2003 but many may not know that stock cars wasn’t where he first started his racing career. The driver of the Your Hometowne sponsored #1M race car started racing Go-Karts at age 11 with many wins and Track Championships coming his way over the years before he started racing stock cars.
MORTENSEN MOTORSPORTS
One year ago in 2021, Mortensen was invited to race in the “Sunflower 50” Go-Kart race at the High-Tower Farms Speedway which is located on the Perry Family Farm in Broadalbin, NY by John DuMond and the crew at DKM Fabrications. Mortensen took them up on the offer and finished the event in the third position driving the “High-Tower Farms #74 House Kart”. The HighTower Farms Speedway track is nothing more than a track that was cut out at the edge of a field of sunflowers hence the name of the event being known as the “Sunflower 50”.
Mortensen had such a great time going back to where it all started that he went out and purchased a Go-Kart of his own, put a new body on it per Northeast Modified Predator Karts (NMPK) rules, with his regular car number 1M on the side of it. On Sunday, August 28, 2022, the High-Tower Farms Speedway held their 2nd Annual “Sunflower 50” Go-Kart race with close to 30 Go-Karts signing in for competition.
The event was recorded live by George Smith of DTD TV, and you can watch the event by going to their page on Facebook. Marty Kelly III announced the event and did a great job with statistics of all of the competitors from their achievements in stock car racing.
Photo Courtesy of Jeremy McGaffin’s Showstopper Designs & Photography
By the halfway point in the event, Mark got by Erik Mack for the lead with a pass on the inside of turns one and two, fought off a last lap challenge from John DuMond, and went on to the victory which was worth $250 plus. DuMond finished in the second position followed by the #74 “High-Tower Farms House Kart” of Matthew Perry. Mark’s brother Brett Mortensen finished fourth.
Some of his accomplishments in Go-Kart racing include the 2001 Track Champion at the Dodge City Speedway in the Senior Lights class, the 1999 Northeast National Champion in the Senior Lights class on the big track at the Albany Saratoga Speedway, and the 1999 Track Champion in the Junior II Pro class at the Albany Saratoga Speedway.
Starting fifth in the first heat race along with his brother Brett Mortensen, Mark fought a loose condition with his Go-Kart and ended up finishing in the fifth position, one spot out of qualifying. After winning the B-Main event from the pole position, Mark started the 50-lap “Sunflower 50” event in the 17th position in the 21-car field, missing all of the accidents on track and moving up to the second position just before the halfway point.

Failure to plan: Is it planning to fail?
• Establish and quantify your goals. Throughout your life, you’ll have short-term goals, such as an overseas vacation or a home renovation, and long-term goals, the most important of which may be a comfortable retirement. You’ll want to identify all your goals and put a “price tag” on them. Of course, it’s not always possible to know exactly how much it will cost to achieve each goal, but you can develop reasonably good estimates, revising them as needed.
• Create an investment strategy to achieve your goals. Once you know how much your goals will cost, you can create the appropriate savings and investment strategies to potentially help you reach the needed amounts. For your retirement goal, you will likely need to contribute regularly to your IRA and 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. But for shorterterm goals, you may need to explore other types of investments. For all your investment moves, though, you’ll need to consider your risk tolerance. You won’t want your portfolio to have such a high-risk level that you’re constantly uncomfortable with the inevitable fluctuations of the financial markets. On the other hand, you won’t want to invest so conservatively that you jeopardize your chances of achieving the growth you need to reach your goals.
• Review your strategy. When you first created your financial strategy, you might have planned to retire at a certain age. But what if you eventually decide to retire earlier or later? Such a choice can have a big impact on what you need from your investment portfolio — and when. And your circumstances may change in other ways, too. That’s why it’s a good idea to review your strategy periodically to make sure it still aligns with your up-to-date objectives.
This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. Edward Jones, Member SIPC. Investors should understand the risks involved of owning investments. The value of investments fluctuates and investors can lose some or all of their principal.
• Control your debts. We live in an expensive world, so it’s not easy to live debt-free. And some debts, such as your mortgage, obviously have value. But if you can control other debts, especially those that carry high interest rates, you can possibly free up money you can use to boost your savings and investments.
• Prepare for obstacles. No matter how carefully you follow the strategies you’ve created to achieve your goals, you will, sooner or later, run into obstacles, or at least temporary challenges. What if you incur a large, unexpected expense, such as the sudden need for a new car or a major home repair? If you aren’t prepared for these costs, you might be forced to dip into your long-term investments – and every time you do that, you might slow your progress toward achieving your goals. To help prevent this, you should build an emergency fund containing several months’ worth of living expenses.
Consider these suggestions:
Benjamin Franklin once said, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.” But as you chart your financial course, what steps should you take to help you keep moving forward to where you want to go?

The other night I was at a girlfriend’s house. The deck was filled with excited conversation. Catching up on the kids and travels over the summer. The focus changed when one asked a question. “What is something you have wanted to do but never have?” Some answered relatively quickly while others were thoughtful and took a few minutes to ruminate. For a brief instant I felt overwhelmed. Wow, so many things. What would I choose?
It was a great question. Inspiring thought on my part. That evening I blurted out that I would like to learn a new language. Over the past week or so I have thought more about it. Trying to really dig deep. Like I said, there are so many things. I knew I wanted to learn something new. Harness that and use it. Find a passion to pursue it. After a little thought I came up with a few things I would like to pursue. That sounds great doesn’t it? Now what?
September is the middle. Equal day and equal night. It won’t last long. Grab your pumpkin spice latte and jot down a few things that you may have been wanting to do or to learn. Take a pottery class, read that new author you heard about. Learn a new skill for your job. Download a language app and start your journey. Go big or go small. It doesn’t matter as long as you go!
Create a space at home and set time aside to do it. Put it on your calendar and make it a point to be there. Keep it visible. I use this method. I am expanding my studies of Ayurveda (power of food as medicine) to include women’s studies. I keep the text books out on my coffee table with a pad and pen to jot down notes. Even if I have just a few minutes its very accessible. I have also wanted to become better at caring for my bonsai. I am cultivating it for my son when he get home. There are many facets to growing and preparing a bonsai. I down loaded classes right on my phone. It notifies me if the instructor is on line giving a pop up class. It’s a good way to stay connected to others that enjoy the same thing.
As always, I wish you peace, joy and a wonderful journey out of the middle Pattie Rakvica - Nutritional Therapist - rakvicahealth@gmail.com
September is catching up with me. Perhaps I am catching up with September. Coming off a wonderfully perfect August I find myself in the middle. My pastor says the middle is the place that comes after your “from” and before your “to.” I know this is not my final destination and I won’t settle here long.

In addition to the hands-off landscaping suggestions above, there are some more active strategies that homeowners can take on to give their pollinators some extra love this fall. Start to rewild your lawn by seeding bare lawn spots with flowering ground covers such as prunella. Wildflowers (such as those in AdkAction Adirondack Pollinator Project wildflower packets) can provide nectar and pollen to foraging bees for years to come, in addition to enhancing soil nutrients, reducing erosion, and ensuring continuous ground

All we are saying, is Give Bees a Chance
Instead of “putting your gardens to bed” by clearing all plant material and coating the soil with fresh mulch, allow ground cover such as leaf litter, twigs, and brush to remain. This creates a dynamic landscape that pollinators can snuggle into for the winter. Pollinators much prefer a ‘messy’ yard and garden.
Most native bees nest as pupae overwinter and emerge the following spring or summer ready to start pollinating. Bumblebees, however, do not overwinter in their nests – bumble bee queens leave their nests in the fall and search for suitable habitats such as leaf litter or loose soil to make their winter homes. Other pollinating insects such as the Mourning Cloak butterfly overwinter as adults and spend the winter ‘frozen’ in tree cavities or beneath loose tree bark. While insect pollinators vary in their overwintering habits, they all require sheltered areas to successfully survive the winter.

Homeowners, landscapers, and gardeners can make important decisions in the fall to create habitat for overwintering pollinators. Without this habitat, pollinators will be unable to nest properly and their life cycles will be interrupted. There are many strategies to create pollinator homes with very little effort.
way to assist overwintering bees is to collect and pile dead stems. Cut woody plants 18-20” tall to provide habitat for bees to rest in over the winter while also cleaning up your yard. Collect and pile these woody stems in an area of your yard for Red mason bees, leaf cutter bees, and wool carter bees to build nests in the hollow dry stems for fall and winter.
It is important to promote an abundance of pollen and nectar sources that remain accessible throughout the fall. This is crucial for pollinator survival over winter. Planting late-blooming perennials such as Aster, which provides pollen for bees and butterflies, and Sedum, which hosts the caterpillars of Gray Hairstreak butterflies and is a rich pollen source for bees, can help pollinators prepare for the long winter ahead.
Create Overwintering Habitat for Pollinators
When crisp autumn weather arrives, and the last flowers of the late-blooming perennials have gone, it’s easy to forget that being a pollinator steward is a year-round job. However, there is much that can be accomplished in the fall to ensure that your local pollinators will thrive in the spring and summer. While migratory pollinators such as Monarch butterflies and the Rufous hummingbird travel great distances to escape northern winters, many insect pollinators such as moths, butterflies, and bees stay right here all winter long, in a variety of developmental stages that allow them to endure the cold.
Rather than raking and disposing of all the leaves in your yard, consider leaving them in place. By doing so, you can provide habitat for Comma butterflies, and insulate the soil to house underground nests for native solitary bees such as leafcutting bees or mining bees (which pollinate even more effectively than honeybees). In addition to creating pollinator habitat, this practice preserves soil moisture, suppresses weeds, helps return essential nutrients to the soil, and reduces waste in landfills.

In 2022 the autumnal equinox will occur on September 23rd. The Earth is tilted on its axis, meaning that as it orbits the Sun, the Sun illuminates the northern or southern hemisphere more depending on where the Earth is along its orbit.
The autumnal equinox occurs in September each year, and in the northern hemisphere the date marks the end of summer and beginning of autumn.

Autumnal equinox facts:
Meteorological
The third way of defining autumn is to use what are known as phenological indicators. These cover a range of ecological and biological signs such as the leaves falling off the trees and the migration of birds to warmer climates. These events of course are greatly influenced by weather and climate, and so changing climate could cause autumn to start earlier or later than the standard astronomical or meteorological definitions.

Equal Time
When is autumn?
Phenological
By contrast, meteorologists tend to divide seasons into periods of three whole months based on average monthly temperatures, with summer as the warmest and winter as the coldest. On this basis, for most of the northern hemisphere the autumn months are usually September, October, and November.
The Harvest Moon
Astronomical
For those located at high northern hemisphere latitudes, the autumnal equinox paves the way for increased chances to see the aurora borealis display. According to NASA, the equinoxes are prime time for Northern Lights, and geomagnetic activities are more likely to take place in the spring and autumn than in the summer or winter.
Because of time zone differences, the equinox can be on different days for different locations Saturn also has equinoxes but because it takes almost 30 years to orbit the Sun, they only happen about every 15 years
Astronomically, the four seasons centre around the equinoxes and solstices. However, there is disagreement between those who see the equinox/solstice as the start of the season and those who hold that it represents the middle of the season.
There are three main different ways of defining autumn: astronomical, meteorological and phenological.
The Harvest Moon is the name given to the full moon that occurs nearest to the autumnal equinox. Historically the light of the Harvest Moon was said to enable farmers to work late into the night, helping them to bring in the crops from the fields. The Harvest Moon usually falls in September.
However, at two points in the year the Sun will illuminate the northern and southern hemispheres equally. These are known as the equinoxes.
