PLEAsE PROOF THIs Ad CAREFULLY!
“Instead of putting others in their place, put yourself in their place.” ~Amish Proverb Did you miss me last month? Well it wasn’t a plan in case you are wondering. On December 29th my printer of 10 years called me and told me they were going out of business. They had already shut the pressroom down and laid off all the people I have worked with for so long. I was stunned. I knew immediately I needed to plan and find another printer. To be honest, I was a little angry. I hung up the phone and I will admit; the anger went quickly to sadness as I thought about all the people losing their jobs in the middle of winter and the holidays. Janine just had a baby, Jacki just bought a house over the summer. Ron the head pressman had been there 40 years. It was the only job he ever had after working his way up the ranks since he was 17. I would no longer hear Dennis laughing at me at 1 am as I joked with him about my “promptness.” His kindness was what kept me sane when something needed to be fixed. “No problem Cheryll. Just send back the one page and I’ll start the job.” My head was reeling. These people meant a lot to me. I know I would be okay, but would they? I was hurting badly for them. Sure, I can get another printer, but I can’t get another Jacki, Ron, Dennis and Janine. “There is a certain relief in change, even though it may seem to be from bad to worse!” ~Me As soon the New Year holiday was over I started the search for a new printer. I wanted to print locally, that was my main goal. I reached out to the other three publishers of papers like YHT. They too had lost their printer (we were all there). We agreed we would go as a group to the Leader Herald (LH) in Gloversville and see what they could do for us. Local relationships in business mean a lot to all of us. We all mourned the loss of our “team” and their situation.

We don’t own community papers to become millionaires, we do it to keep our communities together and informed. Enter Tim, Production Manager and Jack of all Trades at the Leader Herald. Kind, funny, understanding and patient. He offered me much better-quality paper and a quicker turnaround. Chad the pressman worked with my artist to adjust the sizing a little. While I could not feasibly print a quality January paper, I knew what just happened was going to be a good thing in the long run. “After you’ve done a thing the same way for two years, look it over carefully. After five years, look at it with suspicion. And after ten years, throw it away and start all over.” ~Alfred Edward Perlman And so, I have. Unintentional yes! But I will say the entire situation has breathed new life into my commitment to the community and Your Hometowne. It has fired up my creative juices. It’s funny, just talking with new people at the LH makes me want to do things differently and so much better. I want these ideas to come from you. You, my readers are why I’m here. If you want something different, tell me. Email me, call me, go on my Facebook. I want you to be happy to see YHT in your mailbox. “People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care.” ~Teddy Roosevelt

Roth vs. Traditional 401(k): Which Is Right for You? For many years, employees of companies that offered 401(k) plans only faced a couple of key decisions – how much to contribute and how to allocate their dollars among the various investment options in their plan. But in recent years, a third choice has emerged: the traditional versus Roth 401(k). Which is right for you? To begin with, you need to understand the key difference between the two types of 401(k) plans. When you invest in a traditional 401(k), you put in pre-tax dollars, so the more you contribute, the lower your taxable income. Your contributions and earnings grow taxdeferred until you begin taking withdrawals, which will be taxed at your ordinary tax rate. With a Roth 401(k), the situation is essentially reversed. You contribute after-tax dollars, so you won’t lower your taxable income, but withdrawals of contributions and earnings are tax-free at age 59-1/2, as long as you’ve held the account at least five years. So, now that you’ve got the basics of the two types of 401(k) plans, which should you choose? There’s no one right answer for everyone. You essentially need to ask yourself these questions: When do you want to pay taxes? And what will your tax rate be in the future? If you’re just starting out in your career, and you’re in a relatively low income tax bracket, but you think you might be in a higher one when you retire, you might want to consider the Roth 401(k). You’ll be paying taxes now on the money you earn and contribute to your Roth account, but you’ll avoid being taxed at the higher rate when you start taking withdrawals. Conversely, if you think your tax rate will be lower when you retire, you might be more inclined to go with the traditional 401(k), which allows you to avoid paying taxes on your contributions now, when your tax rate is high. Of course, you can see the obvious problem with these choices – specifically, how can you know with any certainty if your tax bracket
yourhometowne@gmail.com
will be lower or higher when you retire? Many people automatically assume that once they stop working, their tax liabilities will drop, but that’s not always the case. Given their sources of retirement income from investment accounts and Social Security, many people see no drop in their tax bracket once they retire. Since you can’t see into the future, your best move might be to split the difference, so to speak. Although not all businesses offer the Roth 401(k) option, many of those that do will allow employees to divide their contributions between the Roth and traditional accounts. If you chose this route, you could enjoy the benefits of both, but you still can’t exceed the total annual 401(k) contribution limit, which for 2019 is $19,000, or $25,000 if you’re 50 or older. You may want to consult with your tax advisor before making any decisions about a Roth or traditional 401(k) – or Roth and traditional 401(k) – but in the final analysis, these are positive choices to make, because a 401(k), in whatever form, is a great way to save for retirement. Ask the Coach: Kim Perone, Success, Life Transition & Spiritual Coach
Q: I have no time! How can you help me? A: Let’s talk about mindfulness. Our lives are so full of blessings and busyness. Our feet hit the ground and we are thinking, “I will never accomplish everything I need to do today!” This makes us feel even busier than we truly are. We rarely allow our mind to focus on the present moment. When we are at work, we think about home and at home think of work. In order to regain power over your time, we can become mindful. First step, be where you are. When we are present, conscious, and grounded, time opens up. We become more effective when we stop multitasking to the extreme. Present: We begin to see what is actually happening around us. Conscious: We see what is in our control and what is not under our control, therefore eliminating some responsibilities we are imposing on ourselves. When we let go of worry and become present, we see precious moments in front of us and actually give ourselves permission to enjoy them. Grounded: When we know the life we desire, we can live this truth and stay on our path instead of waffling with the whims or approval of others. My advice would be to clearly identify all that you are committing yourself to, what is most important to you, and consider letting optional items go. When we keep overstuffing our life, like overstuffed bags, we burst. Even if we don’t burst, we may lose our happiness, begin living
in resentment, and wonder why. Where our lives once had sparkle, we lose our luster. How do you decide what fits in and what does not fit in your life? What are you doing that brings you joy? Are you striving and never arriving? These are some of the questions we find answers to in coaching. Finding authentic success, alignment, and genuine purpose is the doorway to joy. Stressed Obsessed & Blessed RETREAT at The Center for Clarity, Compassion & Contentment will be held Saturday, March 2nd, 10-4pm and again April 27th 10-4pm. Learn how to reduce stress through meditation, mindfulness, passion, purpose, habits, identifying limiting beliefs and tools for cultivating more happiness in life. Includes lunch and refreshments, 2 guided meditations and tools to use! $149 pp. Live by Design (not Default)-A 3 hour workshop will be held Saturday, March 16th, noon-3pm. One on one coaching packages also available. To inquire or register contact Kim at kperone@center4c.com, (518) 3013593. (Space is limited to 10). Tell your friends about us! 5 Things to Do Now If You Plan to Sell Your Home This Spring from Christopher Haddon, Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker Howard Hanna Real Estate Services
If you’re thinking of selling your home this spring, it’s not too early to start getting your house ready. Here are 5 tips that you can start working on to make the selling process smoother later on.
BONUS (And perhaps the most important): CALL ME! I’d be happy to go over the selling process with you and answer any questions you may have.
1. Pack your stuff. You may be thinking, “It’s way too early to start packing – I haven’t even sold the house yet!” But take advantage of the colder and darker season by staying indoors and clean our your stuff. Start with closets, the basement, attic or garage, etc. and donate or toss out anything you don’t plan to take with you. By the time you’re ready to sell, you’ll be off to a great start having purged all your non-essentials. 2. Stage your home. A staged home is neat, and free of clutter and personal mementos. Although you don’t have to take down the family photos just yet, getting rid of clutter can often be overwhelming, so give yourself a good amount of time to get this done. 3. Make a maintenance list. Walk through your house and look at is as a buyer would. Does it need fresh paint? Are the front steps rotting? Missing shingles on your roof? An old water stain on the ceiling? Make a to-do list and start working on those one by one. 4. Check your systems. Is your heating, ventilation, and AC working properly? Take some time to change any necessary filters and make sure everything is in good order. While you’re at it, check your plumbing, smoke alarm, and carbon monoxide detectors too! 5. Make a plan for curb appeal. Spring is a fantastic time for curb appeal. Take a tour of your front year and make a plan. Trim the hedges, a fresh coat of paint on the front door, and even a small outdoor seating area can make all the difference to your potential buyers.

5 Tips for Successfully Receiving an Inheritance
If you recently received an inheritance, or are expecting to receive one in the near future, it has likely triggered mixed emotions in you. You have lost a loved one and also experienced monetary gain. Studies show that a third of Americans who received an inheritance completely spent it within two years of receipt. Below are five practical steps for you to follow to maximize and protect your inheritance. 1. Take your time. Allow yourself to be emotionally ready. Making decisions on what to do with your inheritance while you are experiencing challenging emotions is not optimal. Be sure to commit to self-care -whether counseling, meditation, or family and spiritual support to help you work through this process. 2. Get advice. Before you make any major decisions -- such as paying off debt, investing in a business idea, or something else -- make sure you seek professional financial advice. This is especially true if you have never managed a large amount of money before. Of note, an inheritance may affect your ability to receive certain benefits, so working closely with an attorney can help minimize any impact it may have. 3. Strings attached. Understand whether or not there are any restrictions to receiving your inheritance. Whether you are being given the assets outright, relying on trustee discretion as to the distribution timing and amount, or something in between, your estate planning attorney can help provide solutions for you. The estate planning attorney
can also assist you if you are subject to a state inheritance tax. 4. Update your estate plan. An inheritance will change your asset level and mix. Therefore, your personal estate plan needs to be reviewed and possibly adjusted to make sure you are fully protecting yourself and your loved ones. 5. Great expectations. If you are yet to receive the inheritance but it is on the horizon, consider working with the relative that will leave assets to you and your estate planning attorney. Creating an “inheritor’s trust” instead of leaving the assets to you outright -- although a difficult topic to discuss -- can provide long-term asset protection and preservation for you. How We Can Help. Receiving an inheritance can be bittersweet and emotions may run deep during this time. Putting an inheritance to work to help achieve short-term and long-term financial goals is a great way to avoid the assets being misused or spent in short-sighted ways. Being informed is half the battle. Give us a call to discuss proactive planning options whether you are planning to leave or receive an inheritance. KATHLEEN M. Commit To Be Fit 2019
Dance is Exercise! Exercise is a key component to a healthy lifestyle that also includes proper nutrition and emotional well-being. However, the routine of such physical commitment is often the very reason most people fail in this area. Dance, however, offers all the benefits of a standard workout while stimulating creativity and upsetting boredom. First, dance is a proven stress reducer. The therapeutic nature of dance provides release of emotional anxieties due to the creative relationship of movement and music. It also improves memory in the young and prevents dementia in the old. The physical nature of dance requires the use of muscles that often tend to be ignored in general exercise or sports, thereby increasing flexibility, core strength, improved muscle tone, and balance. Posture improvement is an additional benefit as a strong, stabilized body core is the essence of dance movement. Second, dance demands intense energy output as it involves body movement in all directions, typically burning a 300 calorie minimum per half hour. While running, swimming, and workout routines utilize rhythm and momentum, the intense nature of acceleration and deacceleration of the choreography of dance requires added caloric consumption due to its intense demands on the body. The all-over body movements required in dance activate and train support muscles and tendons not typically engaged in most exercise or sports. Third, as in all other forms of cardio exercise, dance benefits the brain and enhances positive emotional moods. Recent neuroscience studies have linked dance to improved connective tissue integrity in the brain. This “white matter” tends to erode with age, leading to loss of memory and thought processing speed. Fourth, the psychological benefits of dance have been proven by scientists. In face, dance therapy is often utilized for those who suffer social anxiety, no doubt due to what psychologists call “selfother merging.” This relationship of feeling a connection to strangers is one fostered constantly in dance as barriers between individuals are blurred, fostering this sense of connectivity. Finally, the aspect of touch, often overlooked as a basic human need, is a vital necessity to emotional well-being. The very nature of dance focuses constantly on this. Touch is the initial sense first experienced by humans in infancy. Growing children and adults use this sense to enhance positive emotions and reduce stress. Consider hand holding, massage, and other healthy forms of human contact and one can easily see that dance is beneficial exercise and a hug all rolled into one unique form of creative expression. Modern Dance with Ginny Martin and Dana Yager is now enrolling for the 2018-2019 dance season. Classes available for 4 years through adult and are in Glenville, NY. We are here to help you “Commit to Be Fit” in 2019. Starting in January, if you join the Y or are already a member, we have a new program called “Commit to Be Fit”. The free program is designed as a friendly competition, making it easy to try new classes, encourage you to work out and possibly win some great prizes. At the Y, we make it easy to get fit. During the month of January, we will be waiving the joiner fee for new members. If you join with a friend, try our 20/20 program. You and your friend both receive 20% off your membership as long as you both stay active. If you are currently a member, refer a friend to join the Y and you will both get 20% off.
If you struggle with a fitness routine, here are some helpful hints: 1. Schedule your workout. Put it in your calendar like any other appointment. 2. Find what you like to do. For instance, if you do not like to run or lift weights, do not force yourself. At the Y, there are so many options, from Zumba, to swimming, to Yoga! 3. Pack your bag and sneakers in your car. Once you go home, chances are less that you will go back out to workout. 4. Have a workout friend. If you are accountable to someone else, you are more likely to stick to your workout. 5. Start slow. If 30 minutes or an hour seems overwhelming to you, tell yourself you only have to do 10 minutes of something. Getting here is half the battle, and then you can increase your workout as you progress. So, grab your water bottle and join us at the YMCA for the Best 2019! Join us on Saturday, January 26 @7:00-9:00pm for our 2nd Annual Ladies Night Out. Grab your girlfriends and enjoy a night of fitness and shopping. For a small donation, we will offer massages, crafts, mini manis, personal trainers, yoga and vendors. Together, we’re building a stronger Glenville. If you would like to join us and make your donation or to learn more about swim lessons, please contact me. Love is...
Ahhh... February, the month of L O V E! Everywhere I go I can see a heart shaped this or a heart shaped that. A chocolate covered this or a chocolate covered that. Just the thought of a chocolate covered anything makes me very happy! Most of you already know and can definitely appreciate the fact that I love...LOVE! It all started when I was young. My mom had these tumbler glasses. On the top it said “Love is...” and then there was a picture of a couple. This couple, well, they were...naked. Not in the biblical sense but more

in a 1970’s cartoon sense. On the bottom of each glass were words that expressed what love was. Things like, “Love is...letting him eat onions on his cheeseburger” or “Love is...telling her that her cooking experiments were delicious.” “Love is... bringing her daisies for her kitchen” or “Love is..whatever you want it to be.” As simple as these were they gave you a good sense of what love could really be. I have had big love and very little love. Never losing hope of the possibility of the greatest love. Over the years I have learned a few things. Wait, let me rephrase that - I have grown over the years and have found a deeper understanding of love. I have realized that the greatest thing in life is to love and to be loved. Not to say that a good chocolate covered anything wouldn’t help. I have found myself not so much as falling in love but growing in love. It is an intellectual decision - a commitment to nurture each other, to take care of each other, to always have their back. A commitment to letting love grow deeper. This” Love is...” column is not just for lovers, it’s for our brothers and our sisters. Our neighbors and our friends. Our co-workers and the people that help us each and every day. I will leave you with these words that many of you already know.
Love is patient, love is kind, love does not envy, nor does it boast. It is not proud and does not dishonor others. LOVE never fails. Go spread some LOVE this month. Wrap it in red velvet ribbons and cover it in chocolate. Give it freely and let your love be whatever you want it to be! As always, I wish you peace, joy and the greatest gift of all... LOVE! No Sunlight and Vitamin D Deficiency
Did you know the incidence of skin cancer has only gone up in areas that use lots of sunscreen? If the sunlight caused all the skin cancer, why did it only become a problem after we invented sunscreen? Do you think that it’s possible that putting powerful chemicals on your skin and then going out into the hot sun and allowing your pores to open up and absorb the chemicals more easily might have something to do with it? Sure, avoiding sun exposure lowers your risk of skin cancer, but it also raises your risk of internal cancers and many other health problems instead. Higher vitamin D levels lower your risk of breast cancer and lowers one’s risk of premature birth. Low vitamin D levels are associated with colorectal cancer (the 3rd leading cause of cancer-related death in the US). Additionally, studies have shown that maintaining an adequate level of vitamin D could lower the risk of developing multiple sclerosis (MS). The farther away from the equator a person lives, the higher the risk of MS—which isn’t good for those of us that live in the Northeast! The Institute of Medicine recommends 600 IU’s daily of D for adults; but they fail to mention that this recommendation is just for maintaining good bone health, not for optimal health and chronic disease prevention. This is why it is important to get your vitamin D levels tested, especially in these dark, gloomy winter months The American Academy of Pediatrics has gone on record saying breastfed infants should now get vitamin D supplements to prevent rickets. Infant formulas contain much more vitamin D than breast milk, and there is a reported resurgence of the condition among babies who have been nursed in certain areas of the world. Why do formulas have more vitamin D than breast milk? Do they think that our Creator “messed up” and didn’t put enough in breast milk? Babies used to get all the vitamin D they needed by getting ten to twenty minutes of sunshine every day. The problem is, doctors are afraid to recommend the sunlight anymore because of fears the babies will get skin cancer. Yes, a lot of babies do get sunshine everyday—BUT they are usually wearing sunscreen! Sunscreen
True Love!
blocks the sunlight and prevents it from making vitamin D! Here’s another question. Why not supplement the mother who makes the breast milk? It will go right into the breast milk! Oh, that’s right – she’s wearing sunscreen too and will need the extra vitamin D herself, so it won’t make it into her milk! Do you see how messed up the world is becoming because of the arrogance of science? Here’s what I know is true; we were put together with everything we need to be happy and healthy. We have within us an “Innate Intelligence” that helps us adapt to all of the physical, chemical and mental stresses we encounter every day. This Intelligence also heals us from the effects of excessive stresses and helps us continually grow physically, mentally and spiritually. You see, chiropractic isn’t really about your back—it’s not even about just your health; it’s about your life! If we can keep the neurological connections between our brain and body clear by receiving regular specific chiropractic adjustments, keep a positive and deliberate focus, and live a healthy lifestyle, we will have just about everything we need to conquer the world. And get those vitamin D levels checked!! I look forward to seeing you, catching up, and being your trusted health partner. Now Accepting New Patients! Winter Houseplants
During the short days of winter, houseplants in our small but sunny front room get lavished with appreciation and attention. It’s a great place to read and shake off cabin fever. Spring arrives in our front room on any sunny winter day. Many are small flowering houseplants that add some cheer to the greenery. One of my favorites for a touch of color is primrose polyanthus. Primrose come in a wide variety of flower colors. Once they finish flowering, snip off the spent blooms. Keep them lightly moist, and in late May or early June, transplant them into a part shade flowerbed outdoors. They are hardy to -35° and can easily make it through our winters and return for many years. If you keep your home on the cool side, you can still enjoy flowers if you choose cyclamen. Cyclamen are happiest at temperatures well below 70° and the flowers last weeks. Perfect for a houseplant, don’t you think? Another reliable flowering houseplant is the kalanchoe. Kalanchoe’s flowers last a long, long time if you don’t overwater. In the home, kalanchoe needs a sunny south-facing window to thrive. If you move it outside in the summer, it will need a little protection from strong afternoon sun. It isn’t winter hardy here in zone 5, but it will flower regularly in a summer bed or patio planter. If you rescue
26
| Yo u r H o m e t o w n e | I s s u e C X I I
kalanchoe before frost in fall, it will provide more flowers to enjoy inside every winter. In “light challenged” rooms, you’ll want to seek out plants that can thrive in low light. Two champions for low light are Heartleaf Philodendron and Pothos. Heart leafed Philodendron and Pothos are both vines, so they are popular in hanging baskets. They can both be attached to a trellis and grown in an upright fashion. Neither needs any direct sun at all and can thrive even across the room from the nearest window. Over the years, I’ve learned that the #1 way that folks kill their houseplants is by drowning them. Often we’ll put a saucer under a plant to keep water from ruining our floors or furniture. These saucers don’t do the plants any good. If you leave a plant standing in a saucer of water (as pictured above) overnight, you just drowned about 30% of the roots. Most plants tolerate dryness better than sogginess. Remember, plants “breathe” with their roots as well as their leaves. If air in the soil is constantly displaced with water, they drown. Think of it this way: you can survive a lot longer without a drink of water than you can under water without any air. Roots that are a little dehydrated can bounce right back, but drowned roots are dead forever. The best care is less care when it comes to houseplants. Thanks for the read. You Have Been Seeing Me For a While Now... Are You Wondering Who I Really Am? I consider myself an expert in Aesthetics (appearance enhancer or facial specialist.) I studied cosmetology at Europa School of Cosmetology Schenectady, NY, Esthetics at Orange Park Beauty Academy Orange Park FL, Allied Medicine Gainesville, FL, and slues of continuing ED classes, product knowledge, treatment seminars, make up artistry, glycolic, peels, acne, hyperpigmentation, and scar coverage and removal. I understand that we are what we eat, drink, do and think show up on our skin, not always for the good. Working in Fl for 23 years I referred so many clients to the Dermatologist to look at the things growing on their skin. One week I sent seven people to have their “things” examined. Four out of the seven turned up with Basal Cell and Melanoma cancer. Years of sunbathing, using chemical ridden products, mineral oil, Laurel Sulfate, hairspray, improper diet, medicine, and heredity all contributed to the disease. Even our sun screens contain cancer causing ingredients such as PABA, Red, Blue, and Yellow dyes and lists of words we can not pronounce. Horrifying! Going forward into the New Year I am on a mission to educate people how to love and care for the “skin you are in.” Starting at a young age is key. Did you know that taking birth control and antibiotics cause a yeast over growth in the body called Candida Albicans? This can be pasted on to your unborn children or shared
with an intimate partner. I’m living proof of that. I had my daughter before I used birth control pills. She had no issues with her health or skin. My son on the other hand suffered with strep throat and had so many anti-biotics he suffered well into his adult years with cystic acne. All too often I see young people after their acne is full blown. Most have picked, scrubbed, over washed, used harsh cleaning methods and worst suffered with depression, bulling, low self esteem causing them to become withdrawn, anti- social, and angry with no clear outcome in sight. A young person should not have to endure unhealthy skin problems on top of all other pressures of being a teenager. We can cover up our entire body, but we cannot hide our face. If your teen has skin problems please let me help them discover who the can be, how they can take care of themselves now an always and help them enjoy their lives to the fullest. This month is dedicated to young people. Check out Browz By Barbara add for more info and special package pricing on skin care products and facial services.
