What’s new in Your Hometowne? I have had the pleasure of meeting with so many new business owners over the past couple of months, I want to share some insight on who is investing in our community. It is no small feat to start a small business. It’s even harder to keep it going. The Village of Scotia “b.inspired home” is a beautiful shop at 104 Mohawk Ave owned by Anne, a returning Scotia resident with a passion for her community. Anne says simply, “The concept for this neighborhood store is to “inspire” and motivate in an inviting and comfortable space.” All of the items in her store are personally selected with an emphasis on quality and affordability, reflecting a relaxed boho chic lifestyle. Scotia-Glenville Legacy Planning, located at 113B Mohawk Ave had their ribbon cutting ceremony in May. Dan, the owner is not your typical financial advisor. Dan is funny and witty, with the ability to realize money means different things to different people. Dan’s motto: “Let us help you put a plan together, so you can do what you do best and live a great life. That’s the first step in creating your Legacy.” Salon 135 (135 Mohawk Ave); a new, beautifully designed salon focusing on their client’s comfort and relaxation. Pam; the owner fashioned the gallery style salon to have natural lighting and custom sound system to give her stylists and her clients a positive experience. Orlando School of Dance will be moved into 105 Mohawk Ave by July. A family owned business for 65 years in Schenectady, Debbie, Michele and their family decided to move from Woodlawn and set up shop in Scotia. Michele and Debbie have both danced in a variety of Tony award winning shows as young women in NYC. While meeting with Debbie she was excited to show me how they used the space with both the children and the adults in mind, complete with waiting areas and a place for the students to get ready. I loved her attitude, her (their) goal is to inspire dedication, teamwork and discipline while having fun and dancing.

The Town Glenville Thistle Be Perfect Artisan Shop at 19 Glenridge Rd. has created a haven for Artisans. Cassie and Raphael are creators of handcrafted items themselves, they know the pieces created by artisans are labors of love and they realize how awesome the work is. Ceramic, wood, metal, cloth; they have hand crafted goods for everyone, including the guys. The play on words “Thistle Be Perfect” is a combination of their Scottish background, where a thistle is a symbol of strength and what we all say when we find a gift for someone we care about “This will be perfect !”. 518 Realty at 267 Saratoga Rd opened their doors earlier this year. Jamie is a long time Glenville resident with a vested interest in our community. I think his Facebook intro says it all, “Dedicated Husband, Father, Business Owner. Love what you do and do it.” A good friend of mine recently listed her home with him and was grateful for his advice and his patience. He gave her sound advice as to what she should spend her money on fixing and what really would not add value to her home. He gave her a realistic timeline she could follow and made a difficult process as easy as possible. That’s a big deal. “A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work” ~Colin Powell I can assure you that each and everyone of the business owners I just mentioned is putting in the time, sweat and determination. The shop owners are toiling away; stocking, cleaning, taking care of customers. I watch them smile as they greet their customers, they are genuine smiles. Those who are offering services are juggling their schedules around their client’s schedules to be there when they need them. Each of them has an ad in this issue, I hope you take the time to look them up. I know you missed my normal witty pontificating…but these are the people that give me the avenue to touch your brain every month. Now thank them for shutting me up and go spend some money in Your Hometowne! ~Peace,

Cheryll and Penny (prettiest baby I know) yourhometowne@gmail.com

Smart Financial Moves for ‘Gig’ Economy Workers Not that long ago, most people worked for some type of an organization, such as a business or the government or a school district. But today, more and more workers are going their own way and joining what’s known as the “gig” economy. If you will be one of them, you’ll want to make the right moves to advance your financial goals in what can be a challenging work environment. But first, you may find some comfort in knowing the prevalence of gig work. About 36 percent of U.S. workers are now gig workers, according to a study from the Gallup organization, which defines the gig economy as one made up of a variety of arrangements – independent contractors, online platform workers, contract workers, on-call workers, temporary workers and freelancers. People join the gig economy for many reasons, but most of them, like you, could benefit by considering these actions: Establish your own retirement plan. When you’re a full-time employee, your employer may offer a 401(k) or similar retirement plan. But as a gig worker, you need to save for your own retirement. Fortunately, you’ve got a lot of attractive options. Depending on your circumstances, you might be able to open a SEP-IRA or even a “solo” or “owner-only” 401(k), which offers many of the same features of an employer-sponsored 401(k). Both these plans allow you to make pre-tax contributions, which can lower your taxable income. Plus, your earnings can grow on a tax-deferred basis. (Keep in mind that taxes will be due upon withdrawal, and any withdrawals you make before you turn 59 ½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty.) Create an emergency fund. Working in the gig economy can bring rewards and risks. And one of those risks is unpredictable – and often uneven – cash flow. This can be a cause for concern during times when you face a large unexpected expense, such as a major car repair or medical bill. To avoid dipping in to your long-term investments to pay for these costs, you should establish an emergency fund containing at least six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account.

yourhometowne@gmail.com

Address your protection needs. Many companies provide some life insurance as a benefit to their employees, though the coverage is often inadequate. But, as is the case with your retirement plan, you will need to meet your own protection needs if you work in the gig economy. In addition to purchasing enough life insurance to protect your family, you also may want to consider disability insurance. A financial professional can help you determine what types of coverage, and how much, you require. Keep track of your expenses. If you do your gig work out of your home, you may be able to deduct some of your expenses – phone lines, utilities, internet, newspapers, equipment, mileage and so on – from your taxes. Consequently, you will need to track all these costs. And you will need to consult with your tax advisor on what can, and can’t, be claimed as a business necessity. These aren’t the only moves you may need to make as a gig worker – but they can help provide you with a steady path in a world in which you can’t always tell what lies around the corner. Imagine the Possibilities Today’s The Day… Look Better, Feel Better and Live a Better Life… By Terra Maddalone-Ristau What is This Thing they call a Side Hustle? By the year 2020, 40% of Americans will have a “Side Hustle.” The Side Hustle is something more and more of us find the need and the desire to have. This could be for the purpose of an added income or something more substantial. A side hustle often brings about wonderful changes in your life. It can bring a sense of joy as many times it will allow you to tap into your creativity and God given talents, new and stronger relationships and open doors to new adventures! Many find themselves not utilizing their gifts and talents in the course of a given work day which often leads to discontent. Have you ever dreamed about taking a beautiful, all-expense-paid vacation at a five-star resort? Have you wanted to experience different parts of the country in a way that you couldn’t even imagine? Would you like to be surrounded by like-minded people, who lift you up and encourage you and help you through the rough patches in your life? Are you looking to make new friends and expand your Circle of Love? Do you Need Time Freedom? Perhaps you are looking to build a nest egg for unexpected emergencies or to pay off debt. Maybe your goal is to have a savings account to be able to treat your children and grandchildren to experiences that you know would bring joy to their faces, such as a Disney vacation. Have you ever had a desire to own your own business? To be in the position of making the decisions that you want for your life and not have someone else make them for you? When you get up in the morning are your putting everything you have into building someone else’s dream? Put yourself in the situation where You can Dream and Dream BIG! Wake up in the morning knowing that You are in control of your Own Destiny; that you can have Every single thing on your vision board. Are you looking for a Plan B? An Exit Strategy from your day job or career? Are you looking for Residual income and not a one- time sale? A side hustle can give you All of this and More. What about the luxury of having the time that you crave and the time that your heart desires to spend with those you love because at the end of the day, that is what truly matters, having time with your family and friends. I have found that to be most successful (and there are many definitions of the word “success”), you must look inside yourself and see what is that you are most passionate about. Have you been thinking for years about starting a business? Then Do it! If it has been on your heart, what is holding you back? Don’t talk yourself out of your dreams. We have two choices in this world; we can

punch a time clock, building someone else’s dream or we can take the steps to build our own future. Life is too short not to be Truly Living. Perhaps you are not looking so much for a business but an opportunity to reach your goals, being in business for yourself but not by yourself. I am blessed to have found the perfect side hustle for me and it took many years of trial and error to know what it was that I was looking for. There are many opportunities out there and if almost 40% of the population has a side hustle, I am sure that you know someone who has one also. Look at all of your options, research the company itself, does it have the core values that you have? Look at the leaders, do you share their vision, look at the product, do you love it? Would you want your name on it? Can you see yourself sharing the opportunity of a lifetime with others to help them reach their goals and fulfill their dreams? For when you help others succeed, you will receive the greatest gift of having your dreams fulfilled. You have nothing to lose by gathering information, it may or may not be for you and that’s ok but don’t you owe it to yourself to tap into your dreams? You ARE worth the time and the effort to look at the options out there. With Neora, I have found a company that I believe in and matches my beliefs in regard to helping others and lifting them up, a product line devoted to helping people to look and feel better and it is backed by science with the partnership of Princeton University’s Signum Biosciences Laboratories, is the largest corporate supporter of Big Brothers Big Sisters and World Vision and has their focus on personal development. I was looking for an opportunity to get in on a ground floor opportunity with a multi-billion-dollar company who has a proven track record of success around the world and I found it. My dreams have reawakened and are being fulfilled, I am having fun, making friends all over the world and sharing with my family renewed self discovery and passion for life. Allow me to help you explore Your Opportunities; You deserve to have the freedom in your life to spend it with the ones you love as well. House Hunting in Today’s Market We have all heard the term ‘house hunting’ and if you are currently in the market for a new home you fully understand why. Much like a hungry hunter looking for their next meal a person looking for their ideal home will quickly become proficient in stalking online advertisements with as much vigor, resolve and determination as any starving hunter; especially in a spring market with a low volume of available homes. As you continue your prowl it can be incredibly helpful to understand how to look for a home, this may seem a bit elementary but stick with me. We all know that when we begin our search, we have an idea of the features that will fit our needs with regard to location, number of bedrooms, etc but I would argue that it is much more important to understand the condition and components of the home you are buying. Heeding this advice can save you a lot of time and aggravation. You’ll be able to discern a major problem from a minor deficiency -all before the kids pick out their bedrooms. In my humble opinion, a great home inspector is able to simultaneously look at a home with a micro and macro lens. A practice I have been honing since I was a teenager-I spent much of my summers exploring abandoned homes scattered along old carriage trails in the mountains of Grafton, NY. My professional experience includes both commercial and residential construction, after buying my third home I decided to become a home inspector and I truly love my work. Ensuring that my clients find a home that meets their expectations is a dream come true (for both of us). However, I occasionally find that I am the bearer of unpleasant news – informing clients of major defects (aka Deal Breaker Defects) is never easy. I work with my clients to help them understand their potential home as I see it, and frequently suggest a great book to assist them on their house hunting expedition; “The Confident House Hunter”, by Dylan Chalk; a Seattle based home inspector. Dylan suggests that the first

step is to develop a Systems Filter because “sometimes expensive but straightforward updates are more manageable to take on than a series of frustrating and complicated repairs that can have “the peeled onion effect”. For example, many people confuse the complexity of replacing a roof or a furnace with the complexity of correcting a chronicle drainage problem or rewiring. Armed with the perspective offered in this book you will be able to break down components into three categories. Core, Entrenched, and Disposable Systems. It may surprise you to learn that from the eyes of a home inspector replacing roof covering is considered a ‘Disposable System’, while this may be an expensive repair it can be straight forward as long as the framing is appropriate (Core System). As you prowl online real estate sites and visit open houses, I encourage you to expand your hunting skills: read The Confident House Hunter -before you make an offer. National Men’s Health Month...Why Wait? June is upon us, which means Father’s Day is right around the corner. It is no coincidence that June is National Men’s Health month as well. According to the CDC, the leading cause of death in males is heart disease. Men, very often, neglect their health and wait to go see a doctor until things get more serious. Well, did you know that most often the first symptom of heart disease is a heart attack? Life brings about many stresses and daily wear and tear that adds up. Hard work and daily routines have an impact on spinal health—whether it is sitting at a computer desk all day every day or doing a physically taxing job. When I see someone in my office with back pain or neck pain, the thing I hear the most often is, “well I was fine until all of a sudden my back/neck went out”; or “I was fine until I bent down to pick up this (very light) object and I couldn’t move again”. Pain is often the last warning signal that things aren’t functioning right in your body. 90% of your nerve fibers deal with function and 10% deal with pain. So, when someone is in pain, this means that they probably haven’t been functioning right for a long time before the pain showed up. I tell my practice members to not wait to come in until they have pain, but to come in before the pain even shows up so we can keep them functioning at a normal level. This way they rarely even have to deal with those painful episodes. Chiropractors are mostly associated with back pain, neck pain and headaches, but we are so much more than. We work with your nervous system which controls and coordinates every single cell, tissue, and organ in your entire body. Our bodies are constantly changing every day—we are either growing and getting stronger every day or we are getting weaker and dying. The only way to grow and get stronger each day is with a clear connection between your brain and your body. Chiropractors take the pressure off the nerves so that your brain can tell your body how to function and your body can send feedback back to your brain to tell it how the body is functioning. We need these normal communication pathways in order to grow and get stronger every day. If there is interference in any one of these communication pathways, your body is not going to function how it should. When you are not functioning correctly for so long, there is only so much your body can take before it says “OK, ENOUGH! I am going to send you pain!” It’s no wonder why PAIN is an acronym for Pay Attention Inside Now! Why would anyone want to wait this long until it gets to the point of being in pain? This is why I encourage you to get your spinal health checked now, before you have any pain, so we can ensure you are functioning at a normal level.

As Americans, we live a busy lifestyle and tend to wait to take care of ourselves until it is too late (and this especially goes for the men out there that wait to go to a doctor until absolutely necessary!). Why not step in and take charge of your health and get checked to make sure your nervous system is functioning at its best so that you can be the best version of yourself? I can assure you of one thing: if you don’t do anything to change your health now, weeks from now you will still be in the same situation you are in today (or maybe even worse). And if you are looking for a Father’s Day present—or a gift for anyone you love, we are offering $10 off gift certificates for the month of June! So, get that special someone the care he/she needs but would never ask for themselves. Now Accepting New Patients! Call, text or e mail Dr. Amy today to reserve your first appointment! The Butterfly Effect: In Memory of Maria We are taking a break from our Ask The Coach Q&A for a special tribute to a dear friend of ours who we lost recently. Maria Maynard was larger than life. A vibrant and energetic woman, a teacher with exceptional skill, and a loving mother, daughter, sister, wife and friend. In her presence you felt completely and utterly loved. It is still unfathomable to us, now a month passed, that her presence here will not be with us in person as we go about our normal lives. Maria introduced us. It was 2012 and in her usual way, she made the introductions and very soon after invited us all to travel on vacation together with our kids. “The more the merrier” was always her motto and she openly embraced friends like family. She was lively, fun, always connecting friends with each other and as her network grew she built an enormous legacy of love. We are only two of the many friends connected by Maria. Her presence will be felt by hundreds, and thousands for many years to come. Her presence is felt daily by our clients and Center participants, because without an introduction there would have not have been a Center for Clarity, Compassion & Contentment and may not have been any coaching for us. Our friend is a beautiful example of the butterfly effect.

Each day of her 8 year battle with cancer was an inspiration. She was able to endure challenging treatments, find new ways of caring for her health that even her doctors considered awe inspiring, and always made time for friends and fun and laughter. According to Wikipedia, “The butterfly effect is a term used in chaos theory to describe how small changes to a seemingly unrelated thing or condition (also known as an initial condition) can affect large, complex systems. The term comes from the suggestion that the flapping of a butterfly’s wings in South America could affect the weather in Texas, meaning that the tiniest influence on one part of a system can have a huge effect on another part.” In his book The Butterfly Effect: How Your Life Matters, Andy Andrews uses small unknown pieces of history to reveal the enormous positive effect that a person’s choices have had on millions in the world. He goes back in time to describe the choices of others that made later acts affecting many possible. Another dear friend of ours, Pat Wilday, gave us this book when we opened The Center making this article possible. The butterfly effect of our dear friend and all of you is happening every minute of every day in the choices you make. There are subtle, untold ways, you are affecting the lives of others and having a tremendous impact on your community and world. In his book Andrews shares this piece of advice, “Know that your actions cannot be hoarded. Saved for later. Or used selectively. By your hand millions - billions - of lives, will be altered, caught up in a chain of events begun by you this day.” We may never know the depth of what we have put in motion but as Andrews concludes, “Your life...and what you do with it today...MATTERS FOREVER.” Our friend Maria matters forever. You matter forever too. The Center for Clarity, Compassion & Contentment is a coaching collaborative operated by Helene Verdile and Kim Perone, Success, Life Transition & Spiritual Coaches who offer 1:1 Coaching many Programs, Workshops, & Retreats. Long Term Management of Student Loans Student loans are the second highest form of consumer debt after mortgages. While there is no catch-all solution to dealing with student loans, there are various legal strategies a client may implement to deal them. First, student loans can potentially be discharged in bankruptcy where the Debtor can prove the loans cause an “undue hardship.” Most bankruptcy courts apply a three-tiered “undue hardship” test in which the Debtor must show: 1) Debtor cannot maintain a “minimal” standard of living for themselves and their dependents if forced to repay the loan; 2) Debtor’s inability to repay is likely to persist for a significant period of time; and 3) Debtor has made a good faith effort to repay the loans. The “undue hardship” test establishes an extremely high bar for Debtors to discharge their student loans, but there are other options available. First, if the loans are federal, there are separate repayment options available through the Department of Education. Programs such as “income-based repayment” create a payment amount based on an individual’s ability to pay. Additionally, the federal government has loan forgiveness programs whereby a borrower who has paid for a period of years and has satisfied a number of conditions can have the remaining amounts due under their loan “forgiven.” The federal government also has it’s own hardship cancellation process whereby a borrower can petition them directly to forgive the student loans. If the loans are from a private lender, the options above are

usually not available. Alternatively, borrowers may seek refinancing of those loans for better interest rates or more competitive monthly payments. Notwithstanding these limitations, private student loans may be discharged in bankruptcy if the Debtor can show the loans do not satisfy the statutory requirements to be considered a “qualified education loan.” Federal law defines a “qualified education loan” as “any indebtedness incurred by the [individual] solely to pay qualified higher education expenses” that: 1) are incurred on behalf of the individual, the individual’s spouse or dependents; 2) which are incurred within a reasonable period of time before or after the indebtedness incurred; and 3) “which are attributable to education furnished during a period during which the recipient was an eligible student.” In short, if the loans do not satisfy all of the requirements required under federal law, there is a chance that the loans may be discharged because they are not “qualified education loans.” With proper analysis and planning, an individually struggling financially can place themselves in a better position to deal with their student loans on a long-term basis. Contact our offices to discuss a plan of action to deal with your student loan obligations. Michael Boyle, Bankruptcy Attorney Law Office of Kathleen M. Summer on the Patio

Things on the Skin As I look back on my youth, I took for granted my clear complexion with its youthful glow. I never gave a thought to protect it and certainly did not think about what changes were to come. My mother was not knowledgeable about skin care. Her claim to radiant skin was olive oil. It seemed to work for her. She didn’t know about cleansing, exfoliating, masking, or sun protection. I was a very young stay at home mom when I learned about a company out of California named “Holiday Magic Make Up.” It was the first company of its kind to offer natural ingredients. I taught mom’s how to choose skin care and make up that were correct for their type and shade needs. I was sixteen and boy oh boy have things changed. Five years later I enrolled in “Europa School of Beauty” where I completed my cosmetology hours. I opened my shop on Jay St. It was called Unicolor for the Unisex. Now that I think about it, we were way ahead of our time. A that time products for hair and nails were caustic. I started have migraines, skin rashes, and mental confusion. I was so depressed because I adored hair and making people beautiful. I moved to Florida in the early 80’s and decided to attend Orange Park Beauty Academy where I majored in Aesthetics. I opened Current Care Clinic in St. Augustine. That’s when I began seeing “Things on the Skin.” In one weeks’, time I sent seven women to the Dermatologist to get their things checked out. Four of those ladies were diagnosed with Basal Cell, Squamous Cell, and Melanoma, Merkel, and Lymphoma Cancer. This brings me to the point of this article. If you go on the ACS site, you will see the very first entry is skin cancer it is by far the most common type of cancer. Because our skin is exposed to the elements face, head, arms, and neck are at risk. Factors are tanning booths, sun exposure, heredity, and use of sunscreens that have carcinogens in them. They are treatable if caught in time and if not can be deadly. If a mark appears on the skin that changes size, appearance, becomes painful, itchy, bleeds or won’t heal it needs checked immediately. Some of these Cancers have deep roots and by the time it reaches the epidermis if not addressed a real problem can occur. I encourage you to get your “things” checked and visit the ACS website to learn more about this preventable disease. Enjoy you summer. Wear hats, gloves, long sleeves and ACS approved sunscreen when out for long periods of time. Remember we all need sunshine for our health. It provides vitamin D which is necessary for our wellbeing on so many levels. Fifteen minutes of sun between the hours of 8-10am is all it takes for that healthy glow. Here’s to early detection and healthy beautiful skin. Place Your Face in My Hands.

Apple blossoms on the trees Giving refuge to a family of bumble bees Peony’s all in bloom Ready to spread their sweet perfume The dragonfly lights flicker in the night In competition with the sky’s own moonlight The peepers are peeping their melancholy song PEEP, PEEP, PEEP as they travel along A warm breeze against my face It is like a sweet, sweet embrace The day so bright and the night so grand I am forever in a glorious dream land As always, I wish you peace, joy and a glorious summer! Weed Killer

As usual, folks are complaining that their weed killer applications aren’t doing a very good job killing the weeds in their lawns. That makes sense since, until about now, it has been too cold and rainy for a weed killer to have any chance of working. Dandelions, plantain and other lawn weeds are perennial plants that come up from a root system established the year before. Because they are coming up from roots and not seeds, they are immune to the effects of crabgrass preventer. Chemical weed killers (liquid or granular) are basically plant growth hormones that, when applied at the proper time, cause the weed to die from the shock that occurs when the weed tries to grow faster that it is able to. Sort of like an overdose of stimulants. If weed killers are applied too early in the season will not kill the weeds. Wait to apply Weed and Feed or liquid weed killer until nighttime temperatures are 45°-50°. The best time to apply weed killers in spring is late May through early June. It is also important to remember that weed killer is absorbed ONLY through the leaves of the weeds. Weed killers need remain in contact with the leaves of the weeds for a minimum of 24 hours (48 is best) for the weed to absorb enough weed killer to be killed. DO NOT water-in weed and feed or apply weed killer when rain is

yourhometowne@gmail.com

expected for a day or two after application. Keep an eye on the weather. Even a quick shower is enough to wash the weed killer off the leaves rendering it ineffective The most effective weed killers are liquid sprays. Liquid weed killers are sprayed onto the leaves of the weeds in the lawn. Since the weed killer is absorbed by the leaves of the weeds the same “no water for 24 hours after application” rule applies with them as well. Like granular “weed & feed” liquid weed killer should NOT be applied to a very dry lawn. Recently a new, organic liquid weed killer has become available. It is called “Fe Weed Killer” Fe stands for Iron if you remember your periodic table. The iron in Fe weed killer is absorbed quickly through the leaves of the weeds. So quickly in fact that it is toxic to the weed and kills it. The grass around the weed doesn’t absorb the iron so quickly so it isn’t killed. It does absorb some Iron so it may turn a darker green for a week or so after application but that’s it. Fe weed killer may take a little longer to work than the chemical weed killer but is proving to be more effective against tougher to kill lawn weeds like clover and Creeping Charlie. Having an organic lawn weed killer is great news for us, our pets and the wildlife that visit your yard. Thanks for the read. Peter Bowden • pbowden2@nycap.rr.com

Mortensen Motorsports Update for June 2019 By Ron Szczerba

Scotia, NY – What better way to spend Mother’s Day weekend than in victory lane at the “Track of Champions” Fonda Speedway with your two sons after one of them just won the first feature of his stock car racing career? That special moment was realized for Bonnie Mortensen, car owner of the #1M that her son Mark drives, and her youngest son Brett who stood in victory lane at Fonda along with Mark after Brett had just won the Limited Sportsman feature for the first time in his stock car racing career on Saturday, May 11 in just his third race in his self-owned #1B racecar! The picture of Bonnie’s face with the huge smile said it all that night as it will be a Mother’s Day that she won’t soon forget. Brett started the 15-lap feature on the outside of the front row and took the race lead by the time lap one was completed. He stayed smooth and steady and led all laps in the caution free event to take his first career win at the “Track of Champions”. “I took my brothers car out in warm-ups earlier this year and hit the wall with it,” Brett said after the win. “So I had to buy a car of my own and redeem myself from that day.” Mark didn’t have as good of luck as his brother Brett did on May 11 but Mark’s win came earlier in the season in the opening race of

the 2019-racing season at the Fonda Speedway. Mark started the feature event back on April 27 on the front row in the Your Hometowne sponsored #1M after winning his qualifying heat race and he took the lead at the drop of the green flag. By lap three, Mark held a half straightaway advantage over the second place car and by lap eight he was in lap traffic with a straightaway advantage over the other competitors. At one point in the event, Mark stretched out his advantage over the second place car to almost six seconds with the race staying caution free until lap 22 of the 25-lap event. Mark pulled away on the restart only to have the caution come out again before any laps were completed. He then pulled away on this restart as well and maintained his lead to the checkered flag for the $1,000 victory. The win for Mark, the 2011 Fonda Speedway 602 Sportsman Track Champion, was the 22nd of his career in the division at Fonda, which is second on the all-time win list. “A good draw definitely helped out tonight and I don’t usually draw very well,” Mortensen said in victory lane. “It put me out front and you are always better off there because you can race wherever you want to on the track.”

70 Years in Business!!

Townley & Wheeler Funeral Home is celebrating our 70th year of service in the communities of Burnt Hills, Ballston Lake and the surrounding areas. We are carrying on a lasting tradition of trusted service and loving care to families who are in need before, during and after their time of loss. Since 1949, our services have helped individuals to pre-plan their funerals, responding to immediate need death calls, care and supervision of funeral services and final disposition as well as aftercare assistance, community outreach and memorial creation. We provide these services for people from all walks of life, religious affiliations and cultural backgrounds and we are mindful of the diverse range of traditions associated with handling the loss of a loved one. We provide a caring and loving environment for families and friends to gather for visitations and memorial services at our beautifully renovated and maintained home. In 1949, Wendell Townley and his wife, Jane, bought the home from the Leffingwell family. Together, they raised five children here and established a longstanding commitment to the community. Sons Harold and Frank Townley continued to carry on the faithful work that their father and mother dedicated their lives to in 1979. In 2013, Kathleen A. Lowes Sanvidge purchased the home and has since carried on the longstanding tradition of providing the highest level of care and service to the community. Kathleen is a first-generation Licensed Funeral Director with 29 years of experience. She is certified in the State of NY as a Women Business Enterprise and is currently the only female Licensed Funeral Director in the State to hold the WBE designation. During the past six years, she has worked tirelessly to improve and enhance both the physical building and the caliber of services she offers. Her reputation for being caring, warm-hearted and

consummately professional has caused her business to grow steadily since she took over. The beautiful 1920’s home situated amid the town of Ballston serves as a residence for Kathleen, her fiancé, Zoltan and Kathleen’s children, as well as a place of respite and solace for all who grieve. In addition to the chapel, which accommodates both burial and cremation services, there is an arrangement area where families can gather to make final plans for their loved ones, and her home is open to all she serves. Everyone is welcome to gather in the kitchen and living space of the home. “Nothing sets us apart more than the unique, quaint attention that each family receives here. We feel privileged to host everyone as our guest.” We have recently expanded our front entryway and porch to accommodate large gatherings and offer a space to keep warm and out of the elements during inclement weather. Our large parking area makes it easy for people to park and visit; we have valets on hand, as well as a newly renovated handicap access ramp. Incidentally, Kathleen Sanvidge is also owner of Valiant Monument Design, an ancillary business that offers monuments, engraving and installation for families. The funeral home’s customer base is, naturally, inclusive of all members of the surrounding community and the market we serve is largely southern Saratoga and Schenectady County; although, we also offer services out of town and across the country. We are actively involved in several different organizations, including the Southern Saratoga Chamber of Commerce, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake BPA, NYS Funeral Directors Association, National funeral Directors’ Association and several other local and regional organizations. Townley & Wheeler Funeral Home is on the vanguard of new concepts and renovations and we continually strive to achieve the highest level of excellence in our work. One of the most important components of that work is to care for the body of the deceased during the embalming and preparation process. Recently, we completed the build of our state-of-the art embalming facility. Here, we will be able to offer those in our care the benefit of the most modern and up to date equipment available. Our goal is to preserve the dignity of the individual and offer the most comfort to the families, who will be secure in the knowledge that their loved ones are treated with respect and love from the time of death until they are laid to rest.
