“We are the keepers of Christmas; we are the snow dwellers.” ~Me
Snow and Santa, they go together. And we the Snow Dwellers are the keepers of what that means. I believe the warm part of the world relies on us to keep the spirit of Christmas alive. We are held to a higher standard when it comes to decorating our homes, baking cookies, and having holiday goodies on hand in case someone stops by. I can assure you the people in the Bahamas are not running out to get three different kinds of liquor that goes well with hot chocolate. It’s a big responsibility, keeping the spirit of Christmas alive. The outside of our homes are decorated with lights, garlands, wreaths and bows. We create a welcome mat of festivity to guide our friends and family into our personal space. While each of our homes are very different, what we are trying to achieve is very much the same, a comfortable warm place to enjoy our friends and family while keeping the spirit of Christmas alive. In our home the fireplace mantel is transformed into a work of art, compiled from a treasure trove of memories. A wooden box made by a dear friend, an angel gifted to me years ago. A picture of Ken’s Dad with his Mom, such a dashing couple! A picture of my parents doing what they loved most, boating. Tucked into the corner is the ashes of my dog Bill. His little shrine consists of his bowl as the pedestal, his box of ashes, crowned with a tiny ceramic likeness of him given to me from a neighborhood girl who loved him to pieces, surrounded by his collar. It’s what we do during the winter, we surround ourselves with things that warm our hearts.
We do all these things to create a feeling, not an illusion. That is where some of us get lost. We work so hard to pick the perfect tree, getting the right gift, cooking the perfect meal. Our heads whirl around planning how to please everyone in such a short time frame. Meanwhile, we don’t even pull slowly into our own driveway to see the beauty we have created. If we don’t slow down and truly enjoy the feeling we tried to create, then in fact it is only an illusion. You can’t be a “Keeper of Christmas” if you don’t let yourself feel it. “Christmas is love in action. Every time we love, every time we give, it’s Christmas.” ~Dale Evans Our community has been dealt some tough blows in 2018. St. Clare’s retirees have lost their pensions, and right before the holiday. They lost what they worked for all those years. GE laid off another 200 workers. Global Foundries cut 455 positions. We lost 17 young people plus the driver and two pedestrians in a tragic accident this past October. Cancer still dominates our conversations. Every single one of us has been touched personally by cancer, whether it be ourselves, family or friends. It is unescapable. Yet, we are the Keepers of Christmas. Perhaps that is a blessing. It forces us to see some good, even when everything seems so terrible. Tears will fall this Christmas for those who last their loved ones. People who lost their income will feel helpless. It’s up to the rest of us to help keep our friends who have been hurt “whole.” Our job as the Keepers of Christmas is not always fun. Comfort isn’t always in the form of hot chocolate and lit fireplaces. It’s a hug and a moment of silence just sitting with someone who’s pain is unbearable. It’s what us Keepers do. From our home to yours, have a Very Merry Christmas
“Christmas isn’t a season. It’s a feeling” ~ Edna Ferber

Financial Tips for Snowbirds… Present and Future Winter is here again – which may make you wish you were somewhere else. You might be thinking how pleasant it would be to become a snowbird and move to a warmer climate for the season. Of course, your stage of life will help determine if you are prepared to be a snowbird now or if you’re just hoping to be one in the future. But in either case, you’ll need to be financially prepared. So, let’s look at what it would take to be a snowbird—tomorrow and today: Snowbird tomorrow: The further ahead you plan, the more options you’re likely to have when you embark on the snowbird life. If you’re going to be retired, you’ll need to review all your sources of retirement income – Social Security, your 401(k) or other employersponsored plan, your IRA, and so on – to determine if you’ll have enough money available for your yearly snowbird trips without jeopardizing your retirement lifestyle. Your calculations will depend on what sort of snowbird existence you have in mind. Do you want to buy a second home or just rent? Will you be gone just a few weeks each year or several months? Clearly, to ensure a successful snowbird experience, you’ll need to identify your goals and create a strategy for achieving them. Snowbird today: If you’ve reached a point where you can indeed make your snowbird dream a reality, and you’re ready to pack your bags, you’ll need to take action on some practical matters. Secure your home. If you have a security system, make sure it’s armed and working properly. Change the battery in your thermostat. Stop your newspapers and magazines, forward your mail, ask your neighbors to remove any stray papers, flyers and advertisements from your porch or entryway, and arrange to have your snow shoveled. Notify your bank. To fight theft, the fraud departments of many banks are getting more aggressive in spotting and denying unusual charges. That’s why it’s important to give your bank your temporary address and contact information before you leave. By doing so, you
yourhometowne@gmail.com
can reduce the risk of your account being frozen temporarily if your financial institution can’t reach you with questions about charges from an unexpected location. You also might find it useful to open a bank account at your snowbird site. Pay your bills. If you already pay all your bills automatically through bank authorizations, you may not have to do anything when you leave. But if you still pay some bills the old-fashioned way, with checks and envelopes, look for these bills in your forwarded mail. Track your investments. You can probably track the progress of your investments online, and it’s a good idea to do so, just as you would at your permanent address. Even if you’re only gone a couple of months, you may need to make some investment moves, so stay on top of your accounts and contact your investment professional, as needed. As always, though, don’t overreact to sudden market swings – ideally, you’ve got long-term strategies in place that can serve your needs in most investment environments. The life of a snowbird can be a pleasant one. So take the necessary steps before you leave, and enjoy your days in the sun. Christopher Nyhan runs the Edward Jones office in Burnt Hills, NY. Sight is a Precious Gift Think about all the things you’re doing today. How many of those things are dependent on your eyesight? We often take our ability to see for granted. Over 100 million lightreceptive cells in our eyes work together to give us images of the world around us. Our eyesight is second only to our brain function in terms of complexity. Although modern science has found ways to transplant hearts, kidneys, and skin, we can’t yet transplant eyes. The optic nerve is just too sensitive and complex to reconstruct. There is a common misconception that if a person sees well, their eyes must be healthy. In fact, many serious, sight-threatening eye diseases, such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and retinal detachment may actually have no early warning symptoms. Fortunately, optometrists have the skills to detect many of these eye conditions in their early stages. Protect your eye health with regular eye exams. We appreciate that you allow us to be your lifelong partner in doing that. We are grateful for the honor and opportunity to serve you, and your family, neighbors and friends.
Imagine if you could help a child read. An adult succeed in his job. A senior maintain her independence. In just about any dresser drawer, one can find a pair of eyeglasses that are no longer being used. That same pair of eyeglasses can change another person’s life. If you have used eyeglasses you no longer need, you can donate them now. For the month of December when you donate a pair of old glasses to the Lions club through our office, we will give you a $25 voucher towards the purchase of a new pair*. (Lions accept prescription and reading glasses, sunglasses and plastic and metal frames. Children’s glasses are especially needed) As you go about your life today, think about how things would be different without your vision. Would you be able to do the same things? How does vision enrich your life? Make sure that you cherish your eyesight. Come in for regular eye exams and keep your prescription updated. Thank you for trusting us to take care of your vision. *(Maximum 2 vouchers per person)

Why The Holidays Are a Good Time To Sell from Christopher Haddon, Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker Howard Hanna Real Estate Services
1. Buyers are more serious at this time of year. People who look at your home over the holidays are serious buyers. 2. There are fewer homes for sale. Serious buyers have fewer homes to choose from over the holidays as most sellers take their homes off the market. That means less competition and more money for you! 3. Homes show better during the holidays. When a home is decorated for the holidays, it is more appealing and inviting. 4. Holiday emotions increase what buyers are willing to spend. Buyers are more emotional during the holidays and tend to spend more money to get what they want. 5. Buyers have more time to look. Many buyers will wait until the holidays because that’s when they can get time off or they want to wait until the family is all together. 6. Some buyers need to close before the end of the tax year. Whether it is investors or a traditional family, sometimes closing before the end of the year is critical for tax reasons and can be a strong incentive to buyers. 7. Business relocation buyers need a home. January is traditionally a month where employers have to move so they can’t wait until springtime. They have to buy now, and then you’re there to capture that market. 8. Showings and a closing can be tailored to your needs. You can still be on the market and you can have the option to delay your close or restrict your showings during those six or seven days if you want to celebrate the holidays. yourhometowne@gmail.com
9. You can use these holiday advantages and schedule your occupancy. You can sell now for more money and provide a way to delay that closing and extend your occupancy until next year. Your Realtor can help make this possible. 10. Be ahead of the game for the New Year. By selling now, you have the opportunity to be a non-contingent buyer for next year when houses are less you’ll have more opportunities available. 11. I will be there for you through it all. With me as your Realtor, I am on your side and you can enjoy the holidays AND take advantage of the benefits of selling during the holiday season! Bottom line….by selling now, you may have fewer actual showings, but more qualified and motivated buyers. The reason…you have less competition, resulting in a quicker sale, and a better price for you! A Mindful Approach to the Holidays The holidays are a special time known for love, fun, frenzy, stress and busyness. This year take a mindful approach to the holidays, honoring your spirit, self, and sanity! Mindful eating: Beware of stress or recreational eating. The key is to savor food and pace yourself. The holiday presents an opportunity for gluttony, but we can focus on the specialties of the season. Recognize the sights, sounds, flavors, aromas while you are eating those special treats. Note the difference between eating for hunger, eating to self soothe, eating on autopilot, and eating for enjoyment. Mindful preparations: Don’t compare and don’t overdo for you. An extreme amount of work goes into creating the holiday. Decorations, gift giving, cooking and baking create the perfect conditions for self judgment and unfavorable comparisons. Practice self compassion, recognize any perfectionism, and appreciate your personal talents. Don’t overdue for you means finding the right amount of all of the above to enjoy the holiday. Some people go all out on decorations and others are more minimalist. When we find our own comfort level, drop comparison and self judgment, and drop pressure to overdo, we can truly enjoy the holiday. Mindful event hosting: Remember your presence is a present. It is easy to get caught up in creating the perfect holiday, however the point is a gathering of loved ones. Balancing the responsibility of hosting and visiting with guests can be a challenge. If we overwork it, we become resentful. Avoid feeling overwhelmed by remembering your presence is the present your loved ones desire most. Mindful gift giving: Give gifts with a purpose. For many of us, more gifts equal more clutter, but we appreciate a tradition of giving. If there aren’t clear requests, try giving a gift that demonstrates your love. A gift to a charity in someone’s name, a gift with special meaning such as one that provides employment to someone in a third world country, a gift from a small business, or a gift of your own creation all have special meaning to the receiver. We should also be aware of our budgets and avoid overspending to impress. When money is tight and our lives are plentiful, we can make an agreement among friends and families to spend time and not share gifts at all. Mindful relationships: Resist judging and focus on flexibility. When it comes to togetherness, tension may run high. Over-stimulated children, cranky elders, family disagreements can erupt at any time. Focus on being in the moment and perceiving interactions as nonjudgmentally as possible. Maintain flexibility as schedules may falter and picture perfect moments can become perfectly imperfect. We may want perfect and sometimes what we get is real, honest life. Mindful spirituality: Connect to the spirit of the holiday. Maintain the meaning of the holiday, honoring tradition but also your spirituality. The holidays are special, not only because of presents, decorations, cookies and lights, but because we take time to reflect on our source, our oneness, and our humanity. Perhaps there is someone you know (or may not know) who is struggling this holiday season. Make time to connect with them in some way. Stay connected throughout the holiday to self, spirit, those struggling, and special people in our life. yourhometowne@gmail.com
TO DO 1) Make a list of what you feel most stressed about during the holidays. 2) Make a list of what you love most about the holiday. 3) Adjust your activities to reduce your stress and increase your joy. 4) Determine a few ways you will support a mindful holiday this year. 5) Create an affirmation to stay present, such as “I am surrounded by blessings” or “Our presence is our present”. Modern VS. Contemporary Dance
Does Modern Dance With Ginny Martin And Dana Yager teach Modern or Contemporary Dance? The answer is both. So what IS the difference between the two dance forms? The terms “Modern” and “Contemporary” mean basically the same thing. But, of course, the dance movement of the 1900’s is not what is happeninging in the dance world today. Here is a brief synopsis and timeline of Modern Dance: Early 1900’s: Modern dance pioneer Isadora Duncan discards classical ballet to create her own unique philosophy of movement. 1920’s-1940’s: Martha Graham and others create their own modern dance techniques and codify the voice. Though visually different from what preceded it, these forms what preceded it, these forms are still considered modern dance. 1940’s-1950’s: The Pre-Post-Modern choreographers, such as Merce Cunningham, and Paul Taylor, implement the concept of abstraction of art intod ance but keep the aspect of technique. These choreographers were the bridge to Post-Modern Dance. Dance was now more about the process itself than the concept. But codified techniques were still used. 1960’s-1970’s: Post-Modern Dance takes the concept of abstraction a step further. Limits are defined and everyday movement is showcased. Boundaries are constantly challenged and pushed to new edges. The Judson Dance Theater and Meredith Monk are considered vanguards of Post-Modern dance. Contemporary Dance turns Modern Dance on its head, taking established techniques and adding a twist. Any fusion of styles, addition of non-traditional music, or movement outside the Modern Dance concept is considered Contemporary. Every choreographer’s version of Contemporary Dance is unique from the next. In other

words, Contemporary is anything that doesn’t fit cleanly into a traditional category. “Contemporary is a collection of methods that have been developed from modern and postmodern dance. It’s also a cycle of shedding techniques we’ve learned in favor of personal expression or movement. Where Modern Dance moved against the grain of ballet, Contemporary moves against the grain of modern technique.” (Jennifer Archibald, Artistic Director, Arch Dance, NYC). At Modern Dance With Ginny Martin and Dana Yager, the techniques and vocabulary of Modern Dance are taught to younger students while the individual voice of Contemporary is fostered in older students. Modern Dance with Ginny Martin and Dana Yager is now enrolling for the 2018-2019 dance season. Classes available for 4 years through adult and are in Glenville, NY. Please contact Dana Yager for more information.

It Was the Worst Christmas Ever...
I know because it happened to me. It happened so long ago when I was a little boy. It was the Christmas before we moved from our home in New Jersey to our home in New York. It would be the last Christmas I would spend with all my brothers and sisters. I was born in the middle of 9 children; although the actual events may be tarnished with time it is the lesson learned that rings true today. My Dad, the proud father of 9, had been laid off from work for quite some time. Needless to say; not being able to take care of his family was eroding his ego. It was a tradition in our house that the day before Christmas we would decorate. Upon the walls we would put all the knickknacks, do-dads and thing-ama-jigs we kids made in school. In the windows we put Christmas lights, then later in the day we would bring the tree in to decorate for the arrival of Old St. Nick. I was helping my Dad with the lights, we were having the usual problems, bulbs out, tangled wires; but this year his frustration level ran extra high. We were in the living room with my Mom, my 2 older sisters and one older brother. This brother, just a year older then myself, was a lot like my Dad. They butted heads a lot and today would be no different. As the bickering started I could hear Mom say “come on boys, let’s not ruin Christmas”. Suddenly a huge fight broke out with Dad pinning my brother on the floor, screaming “shut up you son of a Bi###!”. My sisters were crying out “Daddy, Daddy stop, you are hurting him.” I stood there frozen; not quite old enough to know what to do yet young enough where I wanted to run and hide. I had a lump in my throat kept me from screaming STOP!

Just then our older brother came in and pulled my father off my brother. Dad went off to the kitchen, while my brother laid on the floor with his face all red as my sisters ran to his side. Mom sat on the couch and started to cry. We all went to bed early without any supper. There we no knickknacks, do-dads and thing-ama-jigs placed upon the walls, no Christmas lights in the windows, no Christmas tree. We all went to our special places and waited for the eventual fight that always seemed to happen between Mom and Dad at times like this. The yelling, the screaming, the hurtful comments that would ring in our ears. Now 4 of us boys slept in one room and from the top of my bunk I could see my brother that dad had just pinned to the floor moving around on the top of his bunk. I whispered over to him “you ok?” He barked back sharply “what’s it to ya?” I knew then he was ok...as I gazed out the window at that cold and dreary moon I did something I never did before, haven’t really done since either. I prayed, I mean I really prayed. I said, “Oh Lord, if there is a real Santa, if Santa Claus was ever really real, please let him come to our house tonight, don’t let my younger brother and sister lose the magic of Christmas this way.” As I laid there and tried to fall asleep, I noticed that the house was quiet, there was no yelling, no screaming. Just a deafening kind of silence that seemed to echo through the hallways. In the very early morning light I heard my youngest brother and sister go down stairs. Again, I clutched my pillow and said, “Oh God let there be Christmas!” In a split second they came running back squealing “Christmas is here!!!!” Nine of us kids made our way

downstairs where there was an awesome sight. Eleven stockings carefully placed throughout the room, each stuffed with presents and by each stocking a huge pile of toys. Upon the walls were all the knickknacks do--dads and thing-ama-jigs we kids made in school. In the windows were the Christmas lights that hours earlier Dad and had I wrestled with, and there, yes there in the corner as it always was, the Christmas tree, decorated from top to bottom. And as the suns first light streaked across the room I swear that tree glistened in an almost magical way...CHRISTMAS HAD COME TO OUR HOUSE. SOMEHOW, SOMEWAY CHRISTMAS HAD COME!!! Each of us spotted our own pile of toys and the room soon filled with the noise and laughter that only kids can bring. “look at what I got !”,”I can’t’ believe you got that!”, “This is just what I always wanted!” As I gazed up I saw Mom and Dad standing together in the corner. The look upon their face and in their eyes is something I did not understand until to many years later; as I watched my own kids on Christmas morning; and now as I have the fortune to watch my grandkids. The shear magic of this moment is a gift onto itself, or maybe, just maybe; my parents knew it would be the last. Later in the day as we gathered for Christmas dinner, my brother and my father had made up. They were talking and laughing as they always had. Although no words were spoken between them about what had happened, there seemed to be a quiet understanding and they just knew. As I looked around the room at all the members of my family, a strange kind of sadness came over me—for I realized that this was the Christmas that ended my youth. A little piece of my

innocence had died that Christmas Eve. But then there was a strong feeling of calm that seemed to envelope me and I just knew. The Christmas I saw wasn’t about the knickknacks do--dads and thingama-jigs we kids made in school. It wasn’t about the Christmas lights or even the Christmas tree. No Christmas, was so much more than that. It was about being a part of a family and having friends. People around you who love and care about you, even when you haven’t been very good. And so as I write these words, I want say to all the members of my family, especially my 2 kids and 2 grandkids and to all my friends, including that one really close one (and she knows who she is). Merry Christmas to you all. Each of you are special in your own way. Never take for granted that which you have been given for it can be gone in an instant. If you only ever say one prayer in your life, let it be thank you for it is all you will ever need. To everyone else, Merry Christmas from that little boy who learned so long agwo what it was all about. May the coming time bring you all the happiness and joy that life can bring and the wisdom to know that you deserve it. For after all miracles really do happen every day— you only need to look to see them. As for me, I will always remember that Christmas Eve so long ago when the spirit of St. Nick came to my house as Santa Craig...a true miracle...Happy Holidays!!! ~Brian Craig Owner..Personal Wine Cellar

Permanent Make Up People ask me all the time about permanent make up. What is it? How do you do it? Does it hurt? How long does it last? Permanent Make Up is meant to help you put “Your Best Face Forward” any time. Permanent make up is the art of putting the right color in the right place so you can look your best around the clock. It lasts for a long time when the proper products are used on skin and hair. Touch ups are very important to keep your look fresh. There is no down time. Remembering Light During the time of the 2nd Temple, the Holy Land was ruled by cruel Greeks. They robbed the Jews of their property, and set up idols in the Beit HaMikdash. No one could stand up against them, till Mattityahu and his sons rose up and drove them from the land. The Chanukah lights remind us of the great miracle that a small band of Jews defeated the mighty Greek armies. FIGHTING FOR LIGHT The Greeks were philosophers. They accepted the Torah as a book of wisdom, but not as something holy that connects us to Hashem. In the end, they made Torah learning illegal, and outlawed Mitzvot like Shabbat, Rosh Chodesh, Brit Milah, and the holiness of Jewish marriage. The Maccabees risked their lives to keep Torah alive! That’s why they won! THE MIRACLE OF LIGHT An even greater miracle than defeating the Greek armies was the miracle of the oil. The Greeks had made all the oil in the Beit HaMikdash impure. Miraculously, the Maccabees found one jar that had been overlooked. But it only had enough oil for one day. So great was their love of G d, that they lit it anyway! Hashem made another miracle, and the oil burned for eight days! Everyone could see that the Shechinah dwelt with the Jews. JOYOUS LIGHT! With tremendous joy, the Jews cleansed the Beit HaMikdash and
28
| Yo u r H o m e t o w n e | I s s u e C X I
began to serve Hashem once again! Nowadays, we have to draw on that joy, because the darkness has grown very great! That’s why we make Chanukah parties, with dreidels, latkes, and Chanukah gelt. Joy has the power to overcome any negative thing, and break any evil decree! ADDING LIGHT! Every day of Chanukah we add another candle till all eight candles of the Menorah are ablaze. By adding a candle every night for 8 days, we charge ourselves up with light, so that we will constantly be adding in Torah and Mitzvot (which are compared to light), throughout all the days of the year to come. HOLY LIGHT! The light of the Chanukah candles is holy, like the light of the Menorah in the Beit HaMikdash. We are careful not to use it for any purpose — our Mitzvah is just to look at the candles and listen to the story that they tell. FILLING THE WORLD WITH LIGHT! The miracle of Chanukah occurred in a dark time when there were wicked decrees against the Jews. But the Maccabees had courage and never lost hope. Their mesirut nefesh (self sacrifice) turned the darkness into light! Today too, our mesirut nefesh for Torah and Mitzvot will light up the world and bring Moshiach Now.

Consider “Micro” Estate Planning in the New Year You are probably familiar with the idea and benefits of traditional estate planning: eliminating probate complications and costs, lowering tax liabilities, and providing financial peace of mind and security for your loved ones. If you do not currently have an estate plan, you should consider getting one as soon as possible. But while many are aware of traditional estate planning techniques, they may be less familiar with the more short-term planning approach— often referred to as “micro” estate planning. As the New Year approaches, now is a great time to sit down and put your short-term wishes in a legal document. “Micro” Estate Planning Explained Simply put, traditional estate planning focuses on the big-picture— putting together and planning for long-term goals. “Micro” estate planning, on the other hand, looks to short-term needs and how to address them—such as an expected absence, property needs during an illness, or even temporary care of children or pets. Accordingly, “micro” estate plans are simpler and more flexible than traditional estate plans and can be updated more frequently to meet your needs at the moment. A copy of your “micro” estate plan can be stored along with your other traditional estate planning documents and can also be kept in a visible and accessible place in your home. One major benefit of “micro” estate planning is that it can fill in any gap and meet any need that your traditional estate plan cannot address. For example, who will take care of your minor children or pets in the immediate days or hours after your passing or incapacity before legal guardianship is transferred and established by a court? This is particularly important because without a legal document instructing what should happen and/or whom should be contacted in the event of your death or incapacity, there may be family turmoil and, worst case, law enforcement could be required to contact child protective services. This is also an important issue for pet owners because your pet may need immediate care and you do not want your beloved pet to end up at a local animal shelter. Planning for a minor child or pet to stay with a trusted neighbor or other person while the guardian is contacted can be the best way to protect your loved ones immediately. Contact an Estate Planning Attorney As with traditional estate plans, “micro” estate planning can help you plan ahead for the “what if” situations that may arise during your lifetime. While most of us recognize death as a certainty of life, there is also a substantial likelihood that a person may have one or more periods of absence or incapacity for which proactive planning is appropriate and desirable. Make sure to take this opportunity to create or update your estate plan and speak with an experienced estate planning attorney today to learn about your options under applicable law. We are here to answer any questions you may have and to help you plan for any circumstance that may arise. KATHLEEN M. It’s beginning to look like a lot like Christmas The tree glows with red and green lights in the corner of the living room. Burl Ives and Bing Crosby crooning in the background. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care. They have held up quite well over the years. I venture into the kitchen to set up the Christmas village... I carefully unpacked each village piece. The Taco Shack, “The Lodge” Mountain House and the church. The people - ahhhh the people truly make the village come to life. And of course, the miniature sleigh and the eight tiny reindeer that are tucked behind the fly fishing tour sign on The Lodge. The fluffy faux snow really makes it look like a winter wonderland. All it needs now is the lighted Christmas tree in the town square. Wow it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas here in town! I step back and think to myself that it is the best time of the year! I settled down on the couch with a cup of hot cocoa. I have a very special mug that my mom had given me many years ago. A Santa mug. His eyes how they twinkled, his dimples how merry. His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry. It overflowed with mini marshmallows and a candy cane hanging over the side. The fire crackled and flickered. The glow of the tree was dreamy...
When all of a sudden there arose such a clatter. I sprang from the couch to see what was the matter. Away to the kitchen I flew like a flash. When what to my wondering eye should appear but the two ancient mischievous elves in the village. There was candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup all over the busy sidewalks and on the town Christmas tree. They were sitting on the stoop of the coffee shop shouting, “Worlds best cup of coffee! Great Job everybody! It’s good to be here.” Continuing their shenanigans they yelled to passersby, “ I am a cotton-headed ninny-muggins!” And asking everyone what their favorite color was. In my dismay I shouted, “ Sons of a Nutcracker!. They stopped and looked at me giggling with big smiles. “We just like to smile; smiling is our favorite.” They told me that I had such a pretty face and that I should be on a Christmas card! It was hard to be upset at those little giggling and smiling mischievous elves. I reminded them that it was the night before Christmas and St. Nicholas soon would be here. I nestled them in with me on the couch to dream by the fire. The moon glistening on the new fallen snow Shed light to a sound of sleigh bells below. The reindeer I thought...this is some sight. “Now Dasher, now Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, on Comet, on Cupid, on Donner and Blitzen!” As it trailed off I could hear him exclaim, “Happy Christmas to all and to all a goodnight!” As always, I wish you peace, joy and a dreamy Merry Christmas Pattie Rakvica, Nutritional Therapist rakvicahealth@gmail.com

Mistletoe Christmas is a time of traditions. We all have them. Bringing in and decorating an evergreen tree is one of them. Hanging stockings is another. The list goes on and on. Indulging in these traditions gives us comfort. Sometimes we participate in traditions that are so ancient that we no longer remember the origin. For instance, in recent years many people have a tradition of hanging a ‘kissing ball’ in their home. Thirty years ago, kissing balls weren’t really seen much if at all. If they were seen, they were homemade. You can now get kissing balls made from the same material as an artificial Christmas tree. These also come with battery operated mini-lights on them. By now kissing balls are a well-entrenched holiday decoration. So, how did kissing balls get their start? The biggest clue is in the name. To find their origin we need to look for the original kissing ball....mistletoe. The kissing part makes sense since we all know that, for some reason, we are entitled to kiss someone standing beneath a sprig of mistletoe...but what about the ball part?
Mistletoe is a parasitic plant. Rather than growing roots into the soil to get nutrients, mistletoe forces its roots into the bark of a host tree and sucks the nutrients it needs from it like a vampire. There are several trees that can fall victim to mistletoe including oak trees. A mature clump of mistletoe takes on a familiar shape, a sphere or ball. Mistletoe is interesting for other reasons. It was never adopted by Christianity into Christmas celebrations. Not only did the church never sanction the use of mistletoe in holiday celebrations, its use was actually banned at one time. This is, no doubt, due to the fact that it was highly revered by the ‘pagan’ Druid priests. It is central to their ancient solstice celebrations along with its host, the oak tree. During the Druid’s solstice celebration, a Druid priest would cut the parasitic mistletoe from the branch of an oak tree and distribute pieces of it to the gathered populace. While doing this, he was careful not to let it touch the earth. Part of the mystery of mistletoe to the Druids was that it grew, not from soil, but from the bark of the oak tree. To receive a sprig of mistletoe from the priest was a blessing Druids looked forward to as part of their solstice rituals. Today, all we know about mistletoe is that we are entitled to kiss anyone who stands beneath it. That tradition has its roots in Scandinavian myth. Loki, a troublesome little god, shot Balder, another young god, with an arrow made of mistletoe, the only thing that could harm this favorite son of Freyja. The tears of sorrow Freyja shed became the white berries of the mistletoe. All the Norse gods worked together to restore Balder to life and, in gratitude, Freyja is said to bestow a kiss on anyone who passes beneath mistletoe. Now we are all entitled to kiss anyone we find standing below the mistletoe. You have to love mistletoe for that! Hanging an entire ball of mistletoe was fairly common in Victorian England; it would be rare these days. This is partially due to a small supply but mostly out of safety concerns. Mistletoe is poisonous and can cause harm or even death if eaten. These days the only real mistletoe you can find is a heavily painted sprig with the warning on the package not to eat it. If you want your modern kissing ball to have the same magical quality that requires strangers to kiss if they meet below it, you’ll want to attach a sprig of real mistletoe at the bottom.
