he Yes We Can Sir Team is participating in the 2014 Saratoga “Get Your Rear In Gear” 5K Run/Walk, an event to benefit the Colon Cancer Coalition. We want to make a difference for the thousands of people in our community touched by colon cancer. The funds we raise will stay right here, helping with prevention, early detection and treatment for this disease. You can donate or join the team by going to www.yeswecansir.org and click on the links that are provided. Michelle Gordon created this organization to help others battling cancer. Michelle’s vision has become a reality. As many of you know we lost Paul’s 36 year old niece, Michelle to colon cancer last New Year’s Day. Her Mom, Jo (Paul’s’ sister) is on the Board of Directors of Yes We Can Sir and is joining the other board members as well as friends, supporters and the rest of the family. We are turning this tragedy into an opportunity to help others, right here in the Capital District. Anyone who knows the Hill family knows they are a force to be reckoned with, so by channeling their energy and teaming up with the Yes We Can Sir team and Get Your Rear In Gear. The Colon Cancer Coalition, along with their supporters, we will be able to help make a difference in the lives of the families who are dealing with this disease by raising money and awareness on Saturday, September 13, 2014.

Susie held on to hope while undergoing surgery to remove an 8 inch tumor, followed by 2 ½ years of non-stop chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Yet, despite the best medical treatments of the time, the cancer spread to her bones and then to her brain cells. Her story is way too similar to our own.
Hope Took Flight on the Wings of a Race One rainy Seattle afternoon in 2000 Kristen sat in her sister’s kitchen talking with her about our family’s decision to become a sponsor of an existing half-marathon and 8K on behalf of the “Susie Lindquist-Mjelde Colon Cancer Coalition.” While sipping coffee, Kristen saw a smile come across Susie’s face – a smile which pierced her heart. That moment changed Kristen forever. She went from being a person who talked of possibilities and what others

could do, to a person who was full of hope and determination.
Susie Lost Her Battle with Colon Cancer as did Michelle, But Their War Cry Lives On It was Susie who came up with the phrase “Get Your Rear in Gear.” Susie lost her battle with colon cancer in August of 2002 at the age of 46. She left behind her husband and three children. With tragic similarity Michelle left behind her husband and 2 young children. Both woman left behind grieving families that extended beyond blood.

tealing a line from the Track, we’re headed into the “home stretch” of summer 2014. We have had a lot of nice weekends here locally but according to the Weather Experts the summer of 2014 is shaping up to be the coldest summer on record in the U.S.A., with temperatures rarely breaking the 90-degree mark. I know that our vegetables are slightly behind in their maturity and our annuals haven’t really grown quite as full as in the summers past. Hopefully the growing season will extend itself a little and allow our local vegetable growers to bring in a bountiful crop. One thing we are not short on here in Your Hometowne is places to go and things to do that won’t break your budget. The Concerts in the Park in Ballston Spa offer free musical entertainment every Thursday evening from 6-8 pm in Wiswall Park. Scotia’s Freedom Park is hosting bands throughout August, all sponsored by our local businesses. The schedules for both Ballston Spa and Scotia are inside this issue so to take a look and make a plan to get the family out for some FREE fun! With cooler nights creeping in quickly Paul and I have been thinking about adding a fire table to our patio. While I love our bon-fires at the marina, chairs lined up and lots of campfire chatter, there is something very chic and special about sitting around a table with a fire in the middle. It forces you to up the ante, bring out your nice wine glasses, plate your snacks on festive patio ware and skip the paper and plastic.
Add some nice music, colorful lighting and you have a backyard party that will be the envy of the neighborhood. Don’t want to buy one? Go down to the Pig N Whistle, they have several that you can sit around while listening to live music, enjoy cocktails and have the snacks brought to you. I will tell you once you sit by one, you will want one. Then you can head right up the road to Countryside Stove and Chimney. Jodi and Dave have a gorgeous selection of fire tables and outdoor seating that you can bring home with you. The legendary Perseid meteor shower – the Northern Hemisphere’s best summertime meteor shower – is expected to produce the greatest number of meteors between midnight and dawn on August 12 and August 13. On those nights, however, the bright waning gibbous moon will be shining brightly in the sky from early evening until dawn, obliterating all but the brightest Perseid meteors. Your best bet for seeing any of the meteors is to watch in the wee hours before dawn on August 6, 7 and 8th. The moon will set a few to several hours before sunrise, providing an hour or two of dark sky for watching the Perseid meteors even though the moon is at its brightest during this year’s Persied meteor show. Make sure you take in every beautiful moment you can, from family time in the park to star gazing with your lover. The season is short but oh so sweet if you just take the time to enjoy it. DECORATING TIPS FROM THE SPECKLED HEN
W
elcome to The Speckled Hen’s monthly article, where I introduce you to new ways to decorate your home with primitives. As the owner of The Speckled Hen, I have the opportunity to learn about a wide range of merchandise. This month I want to tell you about a specific product line that I am crazy about: David T. Smith’s reproductions of antique Redware pottery. This stuff is gorgeous, I mean absolutely stunning! As its name implies, Redware pottery is a reddish/brown color and was first made by English settlers in the 1600’s. Functional, attractive and affordable, Redware pottery was also found in American homes during the 18th and 19th Centuries. The reason for its color is the iron content of the clay that was used to produce the pottery. The shades of red or brown can vary greatly depending on where the clay came from and how much iron is in the clay. The brick-red clay that gave Redware its name was plentiful in just about every part of the country, and potters transformed it into a variety of useful and decorative items. Redware pottery was made in many different states
including, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York and Tennessee. The potters of Pennsylvania were the most prolific and artistic of all American Redware potters. Their decoration consisted of simple solid color glazes, to the multicolored, very detailed and are highly prized by collectors today. Antique Redware pottery from colonial times is often rough and usually of poor quality. The reason for this is due to the restriction imposed on the English settlers by the British crown in the 17th Century. For this reason, reproductions are cherished! Sweltering temperatures with no breeze in sight, seemingly endless stretches of humidity followed by random thunderstorms on any days you schedule an outdoor barbeque, the AC in your car suddenly stops working the one day you need to wear a suit to work, etc. Welcome to August my friends! Let’s focus on the positive: it’s finally nice out and all your appliances are actually working great. But if something stops working properly, you’ll want to replace it right away and have the broken one taken out ASAP. That’s where we come in, in this case, literally. Don’t let just anyone take these away for you; it’s time to call Scrapster. Here’s why: older air conditioners, central air condensers, dehumidifiers, refrigerators, freezers and water fountains/ coolers all contain refrigerants (think Freon) like R-12, R-22 and R-500. ancing on a theme gives Dana Wojcik and me a chance to add special focus to the dances we choreograph for all of our classes. Last dance season our choreography followed a literary theme with all of our dances based on characters from books. It made for a very fun dance show last Spring. This dance season our theme will be international music. Right now we are choreographing dances to music from all over the world. The sounds and flavor of world music will challenge and delight our students as our dances reflect the pace and rhythm of varying cultures. Modern dance is creatively versatile allowing choreography to take on any form to tell the story at hand. That is why modern dance always looks different, unique and quite often, very exciting. In creating her new dances Dana is taking our international theme a bit further. She’s exploring actual dance forms unique to different cultures and incorporating those styles into her modern dance choreography for her older students. Capoeira, a Brazilian martial arts form will be the focus of one of the dances
Dana choreographs for the Intermediate II level. In the 16th century it was practiced by slaves and disguised as a dance to prevent them from punishment or even execution for learning how to fight and defend themselves, which was forbidden to them. Gaga is a movement language invented by the Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin. Gaga emphasizes sensation and availability of movement, promoting discovery of new ways of moving, pushing the body to its limits and breaking down old habits. Much of the physicality of Gaga is promoted through improvisation, which is an important focus of our modern dance curriculum. Dana’s Intermediate IV level class will explore the influence of Gaga in one of her dances this season. The aspect of marrying various cultural dances within modern dance demonstrates how much they go hand in hand. THE SUMMER PLACE TO BE
ast month, I recounted how we Burnt Hills students spent our summers working around the Mayfair area. But, what about a few years later, when we were home from college over the summer? While most of us still worked in dead-end jobs, we were able to get out at night. And, where did we go to whet our whistle? Now, before I go on, remember, this was in the era in which one could legally drink in New York at the mere age of 18, so we weren’t breaking any laws when we hit the bars (that was a few years earlier.) Getting together with fellow Spartan alumni was a great past time. I first saw this a few months into my college career, when I was home for Thanksgiving, and on the night before Turkey Day, met up with huge group of others doing the same thing at Froelich’s Inn in East Glenville (at the current site of The Bayou.) It was a great tradition, one in which I partook for years. But, this was just a one night stand; it was in the summer where a bunch of alum would get together on a weekly basis. And, that night was Thursday. And, although The Olde Homestead, Poor John’s and the aforementioned Froelich’s were fine the rest of the week, for Thursdays, we headed north, to Saratoga Springs. Saratoga was a popular meeting up place for us. In those days, lawn seats at SPAC were usually only $6-$7, and it was not uncommon for us to head up to the musical shed 8-10 times each summer to catch acts appearing almost annually, such as the Doobie Brothers, Steve Miller Band, and James Taylor (who by the way, commanded $40 for such a place on the grass when I saw him there last week.) But, Thursday was our night in downtown. Everwhere one looked, they saw a Spartan. We would start out at Barclay’s, which was on Broadway, just north of Phila Street. Barclay’s on Thursdays had their $1 Long Island Iced Tea Night, and everyone knew it. Some, alas knew it too well. I have not had an LI Iced Tea before or since, but, I can still taste them all these years later.
After a few rounds at Barclay’s, we would head over to Tin & Lint on Caroline. The T&L was then, as it is now, a no-frills bar, but was a popular meeting spot. We would have a pitcher of beer, grab some horribly stale, salty snacks from their popcorn machine, and have “bowling” contests at their long game table. After T&L, we would head just around the corner to The Metro on Maple Avenue. Such a great spot, which, alas closed its doors a few years ago. The Metro had three floors, two of which had live music. The third, where most of us would head, had a DJ spinning the great dance tunes of the 1980’s, such as “Don’t You Want Me Baby?”, “Rapture”,“She Blinded Me With Science”, and lest we forget, “Jenny (867-5309)”. That top floor had a humongous poster of Marilyn Monroe, which we would be watching as we danced for a few hours. It was cramped, loud and very sweaty. And, I am guessing I am not alone in missing it. We would typically leave there at 3:00am or so, and be famished. A few hot dogs with the works from the Emporium would take care of our hunger, then it was time to head home. This would include passing through Ballston Spa very slowly, because going even 31 mph in a 30 would get you a ticket back then. Somehow we survived it all. A few months I wrote about the origins of Burnt Hills football, including how in1954, then-Spartan Athletic Director Jack Rentz hired Murry O’Neil and Ed Dempsey, who would successfully run the program for 30 years, coaching hundreds, including your columnist. Subsequently, I received a wonderful letter from Tom Rentz, son of the late Jack, who provided some wonderful, additional anecdotes, including the fact O’Neal was his first babysitter. Some of the best feedback I have ever received for a column Then, just last week in Malta, I bumped into O’Neal and Dempsey, still socializing together after all these years. Coach Dempsey noted they were both touched by the look back, and he said, “Thanks.” I think that’s my line.

omehow, the urban legend that ‘wearing glasses too much will make my eyes worse’ has perpetuated through time and has blossomed into a weed that I and many colleagues are constantly trying to eradicate through education. Let’s look at an analogy – Does wearing your shoes 2 sizes too big make your feet bigger? Does not wearing shoes make it easier for you to walk? Does making it easier for you to walk make your legs weaker? These all seem like ridiculous questions, but it is this rationale that people rely on when thinking about wearing eye correction. It just isn’t true or supported by scientific evidence. If you’re a child who needs them, the benefits of wearing glasses are clear. Children’s eyes need to learn to see, so if they don’t have the right glasses they can develop so-called “lazy-eye” or amblyopia because they’ve never had a sharp image on their retina. The correct prescription has also been shown to improve your reading speed and reduce the risk of developing a squint. There’s no suggestion that wearing the correct glasses will make your eyesight worse than not wearing them at all. In fact the longest-ever study of the progression of myopia, which has

I published its 23-year findings suggests the contrary. If you have a refractive error, you will continue to have a refractive error whether or not you wear glasses to correct it. You can’t make your eyes worse just like you can’t make them better by wearing glasses; you can only correct what is wrong with glasses and contacts. Some people who have binocular vision development issues require more intensive direction as to when and when NOT to wear glasses. In these cases your eye doctor will communicate this specifically during your examination. Some people end up feeling their uncorrected vision becomes worse after wearing glasses for some time. What is actually happening is your brain is getting used to 20/20 and prefers it. Bottom line –give your brain the vision it craves. The clearer an image is focused on the retina, the better the resolution of the visual stimulus to the brain.

The second best things are very, very expensive.” While it can quite confidently be assumed that she was speaking with regard to fashion, let’s take a minute to look at how that applies to real estate. As we are all aware purchasing a home is very, very expensive. Set aside the actual price you pay for a home for just a quick second. There are home inspections (which cost a few hundred bucks and are worth every penny), septic inspections, well flow tests, water potability tests, pest infestation inspections, appraisals, radon tests, water flow test, not to mention mortgage closing costs, attorney fees, filing fees, taxes...this list is a long one and as a buyer you’ll be paying for them – some of which you will pay for months before you ever get to actually live in your new home! And then there’s the home...it’s everything you wanted. You went to the open house and this home is THE ONE! It’s in a great neighborhood, and it’s convenient to work, and the layout is near perfect, and the yard is beautiful, and you even love the paint colors, the carpet is new, and the appliances are stainless steel just like all your friends have, and your mom was with you and she loves it too, and it’s priced to fit your budget, and the garage has a garage door opener, and there’s leaves on the trees, and the grass is mowed, and you told the agent at the open house that you LOVE it and you WANT it and that the PRICE IS RIGHT and you take that agent’s card and you tell that agent you are going to call them in the morning and to be ready to write up the contract! You are so happy that you’re squealing with delight and the agent is just thrilled to death and she’s jumping up and down and takes your name and number and says let’s not wait for tomorrow – let’s start RIGHT NOW! Everybody is happy, happy, happy! Except that...the agent at the open house is representing the seller!!! NO ONE IS REPRESENTING YOU OR YOUR BEST INTEREST! That agent is a paid agent for the seller. His/her primary responsibility is to sell this house for the seller. Who buys it doesn’t matter to the seller’s agent. They work for the seller! As part of the negotiated commission structure the seller is paying THEIR AGENT to help them set the price, remind them to mow the lawn before an open house,

coach them about staging their home and painting over their son’s royal blue bedroom wall paint and put new carpeting in the living room before it goes on the market and turn on all the lights before showings, and position their furniture just so, and...and...and...that agent’s job is to get that seller the most money for this house with the least amount of contingencies and be sure that it closes in the time frame that the seller wants...and now YOU plan to have the seller’s agent negotiate on YOUR behalf? “The best things in life are free.” And so is a buyer’s agent! ast year I received an email from Jeff Townsend, GM of the Saratoga County Fair who had been following our Facebook page. Being a music buff he recognized a familiar name - Master Blues Hall of Fame Artist, Rhett Tyler and wanted to know our connection. Once he realized that I had a personal connection to Rhett, he asked if we had an interest in being a corporate sponsor for the Saratoga County Fair and deliver Rhett Tyler and Early Warning as the feature act on opening day. I jumped at that opportunity without a blink, well, ok it was a long blink as this decision required full support from my wife Cheryll, Co-Owner/Publisher/Editor & Bottom Line Decision Maker. In laymen terms she is the one who can sink or sail an idea. After a discussion and pitch from the heart, she approved the terms and I was free to “sign the line”. Let it be known, we work as a team, especially when we agree on a project! While her strength lies in everything “print” from content that appeals across our demographics, to conceptual advertising, customer support and a 50,000
Rhett foot view of the industry that comes from YEARS in the publication world, my strength is more on the customer service end. I am a GE retiree with 42 years of service whose only exposure to the print world was reading the Daily News and creating PowerPoint presentations and touring prospective buyers through the plant for the last leg of my GE career as a Certified 6 Sigma Black Belt. Cheryll can sell sand at the beach. I’m not talking about pushing clip art on the back of a grocery receipt, or a cheesy Facebook pop up, I’m talking about seriously respected print media. Cheryll rarely toots her own horn, so I will do it. Darn few people in this area have the background Cheryll has in the industry, she has won numerous publisher awards and in one case ranked in the top 10 for the entire country for her work in a related industry. My wife is serious business when it comes to our publication, so climbing onboard the County Fair train meant it better be good. Mind you all this had taken place before I had the opportunity to even talk with Rhett to see if HE was interested in the gig. Understand I’m thrilled to the bone that we would be able to sponsor the band, the Fair wants him and all I needed was Rhett to give me the green light.

band to review the itineraries of drummers who may have available dates and set list knowledge to keep the rhythm tight with nationally acclaimed bassist and first round Grammy nominee Doug Howard while Rhett zones out his sizzling leads. With dates on the calendar and an immediate need they called on Chris Reddan a mutual friend and drummer from downstate who stepped in without missing a beat- however Chris was scheduled to hit the road with the late great blues guitarist, Johnny Winter- before taking the tour to Europe as part of his 70th birthday celebration. Sadly Johnny Winter died in his hotel room on July 16th in Zurich, Switzerland.

The heavens were aligned and the Blues was alive- it was a great show, not only in the pavilion but all around the perimeter of the building & into the food court, people were dancing in their own space, even toddlers on their parent’s shoulders were bouncing to the beat. Rhett and Doug then turned to Bo Matheson, a Wildman on drums who shares their billing in a band called SpoonBread, the group who earned TWO FIRST ROUND GRAMMY nominations at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards for “One More Mile” & “Standing on Shaky Ground” from the album “Live at the Fireman’s Ball.” Consider if you will, three amazingly talented lifelong musicians pouring all they have into a series of set lists, up and down the east coast fine tuning the show for the Saratoga County Fair. What a night it was! Mother Nature took care of turning up the heat by ShowTime while the band took it from there and SMOKED the house! With Rhett bending out screaming licks on the Stratocaster, Bo and Doug provided a rock solid foundation that you could feel in your chest. The Live Music Pavilion was rocking as the appreciative audience

ith Mark racing two nights a week he has been extremely busy maintaining one car to run at both Glen Ridge on Friday’s and Fonda on Saturday’s. All of his hard work paid off on Friday, June 27 when he started the 25-lap feature event at Glen Ridge on the outside of the front row and led at the start when Joe Kriss dropped the green flag. On lap 10 of the feature event the first caution was out and on the restart Mark maintained his lead over Kurtis Hohensheldt, Tony Farone, Brian Pessolano, and Chad Edwards. By lap 15 Mark opened up a big lead again in the Your Hometowne (thank you Paul & Cheryl for all of your support of our race team) sponsored #1M but another yellow flag brought the field back to him on lap 18. On this restart Hohensheldt took the lead away from Mark but with only three laps to go in the race Mark made a pass on the inside of turns three and four and held the lead the rest of the way for his first win of the 2014 season at Glen Ridge and the second of his career at the track. It was also Mark’s second win of the 2014 season after getting a win at Fonda earlier this season. As of the end of the month of July Mark was in second place in points at Glen Ridge with approximately five races to go before the point championship will be decided. Success in racing is all about team work and sponsors and what they bring to a race team and on Thursday, July 10 Mark had a sponsorship appearance at the Jumpin’ Jack’s Drive-In in Scotia, NY. With the race car on display it gave people a chance to see the race car up close and talk racing with Mark and the crew along with car owner Bonnie Mortensen. The children who were at Jumpin’ Jack’s that evening were also allowed to sit in the race car if they chose to which is a big thrill for them and Mark was also available to take a picture with them and gave out many autographed pic-
tures at the appearance as well. A big thank you goes out to the Lansing family for all of their support of our race team and also for allowing us to make an appearance at their business with the race car. On Friday, July 11 long time sponsors of the Mortensen Motorsports #1M the Socha family from Socha Plaza in Scotia, NY attended the races at the Glen Ridge Motorsports Park for the first time. Bill and Grant Socha along with Grant’s girlfriend Erin O’Connor were all at Glen Ridge that evening and Glen Ridge announcer Jim King made sure that they were welcome at the track announcing their names many times as the racing program went on through the evening. Thank you to the Socha family as well for all of their support as Mark finished second that night! Sponsoring a race car can mean a lot of exposure for a business as the business name on the car can be seen on a weekly basis at your local speedways. Sponsorship appearances which the Mortensen Motorsports Racing Team does throughout the season is also very popular among people who may not know what dirt track racing is all about but once they talk to the driver or crew member at an appearance they may want to get involved in racing and there is always room for additional sponsors on the Mortensen #1M race car. appy August! This summer, most certainly, has been wonderful. Weekends and days filled with warm sun, blue skies and fluffy white clouds drifting by. Over the years I have had many opportunities to travel, not only during the summer months, but all year ‘round. Traveling to far off countries and standing on top of the Eiffel Tower, overlooking the “City of Lights” and the experience took my breath away. To islands that call you each morning to their sandy shores and aqua seas. Swimming with dolphins, sea turtles, majestic sting rays and barracuda with shiny white teeth. Kayaking the coral reefs of Hawaii and landing on Lanikai Beach. As wonderful and brochure perfect these were, I still appreciate a short car ride to a lake that conjures up many more memories. Although the big strawberry sign is long gone, the pine trees still opened up to a long road down to the lake. As we pulled into the “parking spot” behind camp #7, the smell of the pine needles was undeniable as my flip-flops walked down to the cabin. A new paint job kept it looking neat. The old painted metal chair was still there. Realizing that I am sure over the years it has moved from spot to spot, but today it stood where it had always been. The
porch was inviting and yet the draw to the beach was louder. As we strolled down, I could almost smell the campfire that used to burn each evening. The shade tree that mom and dad sat under was still there. As the breeze off the lake took my breath away, I felt like I was 12 again, just like it was yesterday. As we made our way back to the car, I made sure I took one last smell of those pine needles under my feet and turned and looked at the cabin and lake. I knew then you could take the lake away from the girl, but you could never take the girl away from the lake. With summer in full swing, I look forward to many more adventures. Some will be close by, like my sister’s cottage at the lake. Some will be farther and require a plane ride to visit Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Others will be sitting around a pool at friends or dining out in Saratoga. Each being as special as the next. Near or far. Car or plane, an adventure none the less. I do hope as you step out this summer into the sunny warm days that you too will have those moments that take your breath away. As always, I wish you peace, joy and many summertime adventures far and near. Don’t forget the sunscreen and make sure to take a minute to smell the pine needles!

Grilled Fennel and Sausage over Penne Pasta
Bruschetta with Tomatoes
1 large bulb fennel, sliced into chunks 8-10 cherry tomatoes 4-6 Garofalo link sausages, (hot, or mild, your call) Olive oil, about a tablespoon – flavored oils from Garofalo’s make an excellent choice! Garofalo’s Mediterranean seasoning

2 large tomatoes, seeded and chopped
Preheat Grill to Med-High
2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
Bring a pot of water to boil and add Penne Pasta, cooking it until desired doneness, drain and set aside

Grill the sausage, turning frequently
1/2 teaspoon “Good Stuff “Seasoning from Garofalo’s
On a grilling platter, coat the fennel and olive oil and a generous sprinkling of Mediterranean seasoning and start cooking when sausage has started to brown nicely on all sides. Fennel should not be overcooked and is perfect when still crunchy but slightly browned and sizzling in the oil, add the cherry tomatoes at the end, sautéing gently as not to break them open. Serve over the pasta topped with grated cheese
1 tea spoon of Red-wine vinegar
2-3 Garlic cloves peeled and diced
8 3/4 inch-thick slices crusty Italian bread Preheat grill. Combine the chopped tomatoes with 2 teaspoons oil, vinegar, basil, garlic and “Good Stuff” seasoning. Brush the bread on both sides with oil and grill, flipping once, until lightly toasted on both sides. Top with the tomato mixture and serve! If you like you can also top with fresh grated cheese from Garofalo’s.
