Acknowledgement Being an intern in Unit One Design is a remarkable and memorable experience in my university life that allows me to take a glimpse into my future working atmosphere as an architect. It was a great opportunity to work with experienced architects and personnel that are willing to share their knowledge and experiences that would aid on my professional identity development and able to obtain the chance to learn from being in the field with clients and supervisors. First and foremost, I would like to express my gratitude to those that had contributed or provided a helping hand throughout my 10 weeks as an intern that enables this whole internship to run smoothly. I would like to specially thanks Mr John Ding and Ar. Ken Wong, Founders of Unit One Design for providing this learning opportunity and their guidance despite their busy schedule. As I always believe that every small detail whether exteriorly or interiorly is significant in space making in architecture, working with Mr John Ding further heighten the importance of it. And for Ar. Ken Wong, thank you for giving me the opportunity to work on different projects and observe the various aspects of job scope in the architectural field. I would also like to thank Mr Soo Joe Wey (Senior Architect), my main supervisor for his time, effort and patience, always keeping an eye on my progress, giving necessary advice, maximising my work scope and sharing his knowledge on the technicality part of architecture. Once again, many thanks to all the staff that had helped along the way. The knowledge and skills gained would definitely be beneficial in the future. It had been a warm and fruitful experience. Thank You. Tan Yincy Bachelor of Science (Honour) in Architecture Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus 26th February 2018

04 Projects Involved 711 Kepong Condominium 721 House 54 720 Peel Road 1270 TREX Leasing Suite 693 Seriwangsa Condominium 739 Tamarind Suites 000 HelloGold

04 Projects Involved // Contract Documentation Code: 711 Specification : Kepong Condominium Location : Jalan Metro Perdana 6, off jalan Kepong, Kuala Lumpur. Mentors : Joe (Senior Architect) Tender Stage Kepong Condominium is a Mixed-use condominium, which include both a commercial and a residential component, providing commercial owners with potential on-site clientele and condominium owners with the convenience of having a restaurant, grocery store, or a variety of other businesses available in their own building. TASK // Week 01 I was assigned by Joe to amend the plans of retail units, all drawings for staircases of the condominium and update the window schedule accordingly. There were changes in the types of windows, dimensions, the positions of walls and the floor level. Throughout the process, I’ve learned more about the construction, detail drawings and proper annotations of staircases (Plan, Elevations & Sections), the suitable types of glass to be used for different windows in different spaces, together with its symbol indication in window schedule drawings.

Week 02 Second revision amendments was made for the staircases, along with updates to plans and sections of tower staircases. Type C typical unit plans was assigned to me for updates where windows were replaced with the newest versions and to cross check with the previous revision.

Figure 1.5 : One of the Type C typical unit plan

Week 04 More updates were made for Type C typical unit plans where there are changes to the walls, positions of windows and doors, dimensions, floor trap and amendments to drain pipes in units with balcony. I’m able to apply what I’ve learned in Semester 4’s Building Services into practice and understand more on the different standard drops for bathrooms, wet kitchen, etc. As I’m not that good in technical and construction drawings, this exercise had improved my knowledge on it and would be of great use in the future. Amendments were also made on the retail toilets drawings where the location of doors and basins are updated in reference to Uniform Building By-laws. (ex: Clear space around the water closet should be a minimum of 400mm on each sides) Required sections were also produced.

Week 08 Amendments were made on RCP detail drawings for tower where positions of lighting fixtures were updated along with annotations and dimensions. Knowledge from Semester 4’s Building Services were applied here as well. I’ve understand more on the different application of dimensions for different purposes in a RCP.

04 Projects Involved // Schematic Design Code: 721 Specification : House 54 Location : 54, Jalan Tuanku Salahuddin Shah 16/9, 46350 Petaling Jaya Mentors : John Ding, Joe (Senior Architect) Preliminary Stage House 54 is currently halfway demolished, but before it’s entirely demolish, we were assigned by John Ding to record all the existing items in the house and produce site documentation of views and vista and an item inventory checklist for the owner to select which item to conserve or dispose. TASK // Week 02 The first site visit to House 54 with another intern where we take note of all the large existing furnitures and items available in the house. Views and vistas of the surroundings and the location of the furnitures were recorded that would be used as reference images later on. The location of the furnitures were then updated in the cad file of the plan back in the office. Documents were prepared in google slides indicating furniture’s location and views and vistas. It was a basic site analysis with a more detailed documentation of the existing items.

Figure 1.9 : Documents with location of furnitures

Figure 1.10 : Views and vistas

Week 04 Second visit to House 54 to document each small items in the house to prepare an item inventory. As the instructions were not clear during the first visit, we were required to make a second visit (together with 4 other interns). I’ve understand to not assume anything while working in the field as some details that we think are clear and obvious may not seem to be to the clients. It is better to produce extra work and think ahead of time rather than waste time while doing double work as time is money. Each and every piece of furniture and items were recorded in detailed this time and an inventory were produced.

04 Projects Involved // Contract Documentation Code: 720 Specification : Peel Road Location : 90, Jalan Peel, Maluri, 55100 Kuala Lumpur Mentors : Joe (Senior Architect) Tender Stage A cohesive design approach can be seen through the use of different elements in the building that give a strong and distinctive identity (ex. diagonal floor patterns, inflected balconies, decorative balcony railings) where open areas and facilities come with arched openings. This condominium is designed to suit contemporary lifestyles, where boundaries between home and work, private and social are blurred. TASK // Week 03 I was assigned to extract the base floor plan of the nursery and OKU bathrooms from the Peel Road key plan and produce RCP and 4 sections, complete with annotation and labeling of materials and SOP (set out point). Throughout this process, I’ve gained knowledge on the use of materials in the construction details of bathroom while inserting annotations on the drawings (ex. C.L. of fittings), learned why and where to start out a set out point in drawings and the how to draw the connections of walls of different materials, as well as the connection from wall to slab in detail. As the sections were drawn from scratch in reference with the plan, I’m now more familiar and proficient of the structuring details.

04 Projects Involved // Contract Documentation Code: 1720 Specification : Trex Leasing Suite Location : Mentors : John Ding (Founder) Tender Stage

TASK // Week 03 I was assigned to plot 15 drawings in Autocad in the layout interface in a short amount of time according to a prepared time schedule (Speed exercise). Amendments were made on the title block and scale as well. Time spent on each drawing was recorded in a checklist to calculate the total time needed to complete plotting all drawings. I normally plot drawings in the drawing interface and it is actually more time consuming compared to the layout method. Through this exercise, I’m able to understand more on the planning and allocation of task in the field and had improved my Autocad skills.

04 Projects Involved // Permit Application Code: 693 Specification : Seriwangsa Condominium Location : Jalan Seriwangsa 2, Off Jalan 34/26, Mukim Setapak, Kuala Lumpur. Mentors : Lina Awaiting Approval Stage Seriwangsa Condominium is a 43 floors, 3 tower-ed residential building designed for Setapak Heights Development Sdn Bhd to accommodated high end users. TASK // Week 05 I was assigned by Lina to hatch the extended spaces in reference to the previous drawings on the newest sets of key plans, unit plans (A, B, C, D), sections and elevations for ADO submission. The areas and tables in the respective drawings must be amended as well. It was my first time participating in a submission for permit application and it was an eye-opening exposure. I had always know that it is a tedious process but with the time constraints of tight schedule, the workload was a little overwhelming. Upon completion of the ADO drawings, I understood more on the process, submission requirements authorities involved such as DBKL and bomba.

Week 06 Cont. with the ADO drawings of unit plans and sections from week 5.. Were taught to prepare BP drawings of key plans, unit plans, sections and elevations for submission as well. Title block was amended with different authorities, drawing number and suggestions. Through this preparation, I’ve gained new knowledge about the requirements of BP drawings, the usage of different color codes for hatching indications of different materials, the process and authorities rather than just DBKL (JKB, JPRB, etc).

04 Projects Involved // Schematic Design Code: 739 Specification : Tamarind Suites Location : Persiaran Multimedia, Cyberjaya Mentors : Leland Design Stage Tamarind Suites is designed to break away from the typical design for ‘small, compact units’. It is crafted to be a distinctive and dynamic building which connect people to nature that have compact units that are functional and flexible and are supported by communal facilities that allow occupants to be at their best. The building is expressed as a series of distinct blocks, layered in front of one another to give depth and dynamism to the development. A variety of unit types (studios and lofts) are skillfully woven together, to create a façade that is animated and porous. Light penetrates the building and garden spaces provide a notable connection to nature. A deep and sculpted façade casts shade on the building, reducing solar gain. TASK // Week 07 I was assigned by Leland to add railings and make amendments to the design of the signage, wayfinding indications and exit sign in the Sketchup model. I’m exposed to the schematic stage documents, presentation slides and proposed alternative designs that was a great experience. I was also able to brush up my Sketchup skills as the time frame allocated were just 2 days.

04 Projects Involved // Schematic Design & Contract Documentation Code: 000 (To be confirmed) Specification : Hellogold Location : 9th Floor, Wisma E & C, No. 2, Lorong Dungun Kiri, Bukit Damansara. Mentors : John Ding (Founder) Preliminary Stage Hellogold is an empty office lot located on the 9th floor of Wisma E & C. The client of this office lot intended to carry out a renovation and as as-built drawings are required as a platform before delivery new drawings on the construction to ensure accuracy, we were assigned by John Ding to measure the as built condition of the interior (measured drawings). We then were to produce a set of drawings of plans, RCP and 6 sectional elevations. TASK // Week 08 Before visiting the site, we (interns) were given a set of electrical system plans (lighting layout, telephone and distribution layout, etc) for reference so that we would have a better understanding of the current site condition. As the given set of drawings were dated back to 1995, a lot of information is inaccurate. I was the leader of this project, so, based on the drawings, we had a discussion first and allocated the tasks among ourselves (some would be measuring the windows, some the plugs, another person would take photos of the site, etc). I was in charge of documenting every details of the ceiling and later then produce the reflected ceiling plan. It was my first time doing measured drawings on a reflected ceiling plan and I’ve learned to study the grid arrangement of every details first as there is a pattern of repetition and columns were used as a guideline for future referencing to increase accuracy and to ease on documentation.

Everything went smoothly during the site visit and we were able to finish documenting before 7pm. Base drawings of plans, RCP and elevations were produced back in the office. Amendments were then made accordingly and a base folder complete with plans, RCP, sectional elevations, site photos and 3D model was created.

05 Conclusion This 10 weeks long internship opportunity undoubtedly widens up my perspective and sharpened my software skills and construction knowledge. It is a great learning experience that would aid and allowed me to have insights that could prepare myself in the architectural field in the near future. I’m incredibly appreciative of each opportunity given and lessons taught by everyone in Unit One Design. Due to Unit One Design’s working style and organised culture, I’d become more structured in planning. I’ve procured better time management skills where I’m able to assess the task given and break it down into simpler, smaller task and manage precisely how much time should be allocated to each task to ensure that all task are able to submit on time. I’d also understand that construction knowledge is vital before any form of design and a good architect or designer should be able to understand the properties of all the materials being used and able to envision the construction method. In a nutshell, my internship at Unit One was a great training that would equip me for the real world. Although 10 weeks is notably short, I believe the experience gained would surely be beneficial. I look forward to future astonishing works from Unit One Design and I wish the company a further success in their future endeavours.
