I am a confident and creative individual, with a keen eye for detail and a desire to make a positive impact on the world. Throughout my studies, I have developed strong self-study ability, interests in material, sustainability, construction detailing and assembly techniques, a passion for technical drawing and model making as well as excellent visual and verbal communication skills. My graduation dissertation is about the analysis of a postsecond-world-war architecture to talk about its preservation, which also largely uses the diagram analysis visually.

P2 Guild of craftsmaster sheffield Academic individual project
As a kind of organization forming in around 11th and 12th centuries in Europe, the craftsmaster guild had significant influence on the production, life and society of medieval period, because of its role governing and regulating the craftsmasters’ economic activities and inheritance when the handicraft was the major producing method of daily supplies. It reached their greatest development in 14th century achieving a large measure of self-government and the growing number of highly developed craft guilds was a major contributing factor in the rapid economic upsurge of the Western European countries. With the fast development of industry, the change of economic and production mode influenced the function of the guild. What should this craftsmaster guild be as a contemporary guild, especially when Yorkshire is regarded as its service scope and Sheffield city center with industry background as the location of this building ? What functions and what kind of craft should this guild serve under the contemporary background to promote the development of contemporary craft features in this area? A specific type of guild serving the metal craft, that has special relationship with the background of the city, will be chosen to explore the questions in this design. Site
The site is located at city centre, beside a portal area of fargate commercial street with the function of outdoor market. There are several important or iconic buildings and public places around the site, attracting a lot of citizens and tourists, some of which are historic projects and some are new projects. Many of these projects are built to improve the econimic of city centre, because the city regenation plan in 1980s promoted the development of lower Don Valley but reduce the economic viability of city centre. However, the attractions are far from enough. So the project on this site could be designed as an attraction by creating some interesting public areas like exhibition and craft market, which respond to the fargate market area beside the site and encourage the communication between craft and public.

metal crafts craftsmaster s public With the site features as background, the collage illustrates the transparency and open of lower floors to the surrounding busy public area and more private upper floors. Relevant functional rooms are arranged near the street in lower floors, to interact with the outside public areas and that important corner. This arrangement and interaction promote the dialogue idea between contemporary metal crafts and public in and outside the building. The “craft performance� window at the corner will be the key point to achieve this idea, through which people outside could see both the making process of large crafts and final works. Inner spaces will also encourage the dialogues, like middle atrium for market/exhibitions and ceremony hall with different activities. Dialogue idea promotes interest in contemporary metal craft of the city with specific metal history and the whole Yorkshire, as well as extend the boundaries of metal crafts' contemporary possibilities.

The metal workshop is located at the front corner part facing the road joint through the large craft show window, which is across two floors (workshop and upper craft couse studios). The craft-making performances through this show window only happen in the time without direct sunlight. Only comparatively simpler processes, like cutting or bending components and assembling are made in this workshop, for the main purpose of communication to display making processes and finished crafts, as well as some other purposes like testing ideas and new designs, because a messy and dirty workshop is not suitable for the site context in the busy city centre. So the guild has other workshops away from the city centre, delivering the finished or unfinished works here for displaying and secondary operations. This workshop uses a lot of timber to absorb noise, being also decorated with metals. The layout is flexible with movable tables, shelves and walls.

This space functions as an open activity spaces for public, with some days as metal craft market selling works from other craft studios in the Yorkshire and rest of the days as exhibition spaces, or being planned for other activities like public lectures. Schedule and details of the activities will be planned by the guild management group. It is one of the major spaces for dialogue between metal crafts, craftsmen and public, as all of these activities are good chances to share the new designs, the excellent traditional skills or the new craft-making technologies and encourage the learning and thinking. A market is set up in the guild being situated in this busy site for the publicity of those studios. The interior design of the space largely uses metal claddings combining tiles and some stones. The vertical exhibition wall uses variety of metal materials to make people touch different metal materials closely.

Drawing is one important part of the craft design. This space in second floor is located at a transition area between the course/training studios and the hall, so it functions as a circulation space, as well as a collection and displaying space. The drawings or photos of both final works and processes of the award-winning works, fantastic crafts, famous traditional works and new innovative works are collected here as a permanent exhibition. Public or craftsmen could understand the craft works deeper by watching the drawings and photos, which could be regarded as deeper visual dialogues with craft works and craftsmen behind the works.

P1 Take the water（pool/bath) Scarborough Academic individual project
The project 1 is a bath/ pool project being located at scarborough - a beautiful coastal tourist city. The city is famous for its sea-side attractions and the site choosen for the project is also beside the sea at the top of the cliff. This site features the nature like water, cliff and rocks. The function of the project is also closely related to water. So the design thinking is largely inspired by the nature, especially the rock and water. “Water is H2O, hydrogen two parts, oxygen one, but there is also a third thing, that makes it water and nobody knows what it is.” For me , the water and experience about water in this building are not only reflected in the swimming pool or bath, but also rising up to a kind of spiritual sublime. That is the “third thing” which I want to explore in this design. The natural cliff and sea view as site features are also related to “sublime” in philosophy, as an aesthetic preference to irregular nature form and epic of nuture, which guides the direction of developing the idea of “sublime” in form. So the interior about water should be related to spirit and exterior form being situated on cliff will be related to “sublime” in philosophy. Both of interior and exterior are also related to “ water and rock” as the main features of the site and building functions. As a result, the project is not only to “take the water” but also to “take the spirity”.

The site is located in the medieval area with a quiet context. But larger context of this city, like foreshore which is full of tourists and shops, is more lively than the site context. So putting the design in this quiet site area is to attract more people and might take the vitality here.

There are lots of elements about the ‘stones’&'water’ around the site; ‘stone’ includes the seaside stones, cliff stones, mountains, stone-like building masses, stone castle, etc; 'water' is the wide sea area of north bay. Features and atmosphere of stones and water will influence the design.

The thinking at the beginning of the design is about the “entity and spirit�. The activities in a bath could be thought as a kind of enjoyment and relax of human body, but I would like to pursue the spiritual sublimation of these activities by this design. For this purpose, four aspects, being related to behavior, atmosphere, function and space, are considered by concept collages and corresponding interior sketches to inspire the thinking of the relevant elements in this design.

After thinking about the interior sublimation, the next step is to develope an irregular nature form with the feeling of rock, being relevant to the definition of “sublime� in philosophy. The building functions and needs are considered at the same time, especially the shape and need of the underground floors, like light.

P3 House for children Burngreave Academic individual project
Brief proposes a project to develope a house or flat in the burngreave, sheffield for the normal fammilies and an additional group, which may be informed by a chosen manifesto. In my project, the manifesto chosen is ‘children ’s paradise ’ serving large number of children in the Burngreave, so that the additional group are young parents with children. There are three types of houses in my project. Two types are normal two-beds and three-beds family houses. The former is one-floor house being situated on the ground floor facing Ellesmere Rd and the latter is two-floors house facing Buckenham St. The third house type mainly focus on children (3-12) ’s need, which is three-beds slide house on the top of that one-floor two-beds house type. Public workshop and playing areas are supported to both children living here and outside to make the whole community become a safe place to live, an interesting area to play and a beneficial environment to study.

Menifesto
The greatest misfortune of children in modern era is that they cannot have the spaces “to do something following their ideas creatively”. When I was young, the empty grounds were full of everywhere in the city. The time after school was deservedly free time. In these areas without rules made by adults, children had fun to play, thought, and grew up with peers. Children learnt the way to get along with nature and suffered from getting into dangerous places… the modern economic society takes away the empty spaces and freedom after school from children. The manifesto chosen is ‘children ’s paradise ’ serving large number of children in the Burngreave, so that the additional group are young parents with children. The definition of ‘paradise’ here is a safe and comfortable living environment for children in the community, with areas to play and learn as well as a place to support education to the children living here and outside. In a word, this proposol is to support a beneficial environment to children.

A safe shared courtyard surrounded by houses is the major playing area for the children in this community, which consists of three levels with different heights, connected by ramps. The gaming platform is put in the middle of the courtyard where wood gaming infrastructures are placed. Running, playing games and toys, dreaming, laughing, exploring, lying on the grass and getting along well with nature compose a happy living environment for children in this community.

Histor y librar y Manchester Ancoat Academic individual project
Brief requires a design to reinterpret the library for the 21st Century, which should be relevant to Manchester city or the particular areas of Manchester. The design is a medium-size public building functioning as a community library. And my site is site A1 which is located at a construction site beside the historic hostel ( being reconstructed to a house now) in the Ancoat as an industrial area in the past. The ‘type’ of this design is a specific collection of old books, old articles and historical books about Ancoat and Manchester and this design is defined as a transition to bring people back to the history. The concept is a journey to bring visitors to different thresholds and then, to different spaces, so that the floors of the front half and back half are misplaced, being connected by stairs surrounding the central volume with beautiful light in order to create a dramatic journey.

I want to recal the history especially the history of the prosperous industrial era. So the ‘TYPE’ of my design is a specific collection of old articles, old books and historical books about Ancoat and Manchester. The site is in a transition state and this building is defined as a transition to bring people back to the history.

Threshold Castleton Academic cooperative project
With brief being entitled “walk”, this project is about a small building functioning as a refuge to accommodate the resting hikers after a long walk. The chosen site is site two being situated at the wide grass land on a mountain, with features of the dense grove behind it and the open landscape before. It is around 2 km far from Castleton. The ‘threshold’ is a key inspiration and the threshold of our design is ‘from closure to open landscape” as features of both the site and the building. The boundry of the inner space and peaceful landscape is blurred by the slope big glazing. Accompanying by the landscape, eating, cooking, dancing, drinking, chatting, resting, cleaning, telling stories and dreaming happen in differnt groups of hikers in different time, who are from differnt places with different destinations.

P4 Climate house Sheffield Academic individual project
This project is located beside the cross of the Eyre Street and the St Mary’s Road. It is a roadside public greenland linking to other four areas by subways. Thus, elements like frequent passersby, running cars, noise and a sunk river challenge the design. The brief requires this project to function as an urban weather station, housing a small classroom and a lab with necessary climate measuring instruments, as well as the accommodations for a female researcher, her partner who suffers from autism slightly and two student assistants. Beyond the basic consideration to satisfy the particular features of clients as well as balance the working and living areas, the approach how the building responds to both circadian (24-hour) and seasonal rhythms is shown by the design of openings, space arrangement, shelters and roof . The site is also re-planned, formming a ‘path’ leading the passersby to walk through the building. The working and living, or public and private areas on the ground floor are divided by that path, but both visual and physical connection are built on the first floor to make the two parts as a whole.

P3 Community kitchen Sheffield Academic individual project
The location of this project is a gap between the Elim church and a historical pub named Three Tunes, beside the Silver street head, being located in the Sheffield City Center. And the clients chosen are students especially international students, and unemployed people, after the particular survey about the site and society. The brief requires roughly to design a small public building in urban context functioning as a kitchen, while my developed brief defines this building as a food lab, being mainly used by students to cook food creatively and also as a themed restaurant, which supports jobs to unemployed people at the same time. In this building, students help the original unemployed people by paying for the food lab or restaurant and they also share the cooking ideas from different countries. Considering not only about the architecture itself but also the urban relationship, the narrative of the site is recreated when the the new design works as a knot to connect the two social groups and the discontinuous facade in site. It is bound up with the will of the city as well as the need of the people.
