WORKPLAY

Project 1: Narrative Programming COVID-19 pandemic is a crisis that affects all over the world, including Malaysia. Working from home during the pandemic has changed people’s expectations of their workplaces, with a better work-life balance as their main priority. The physical office still has a role to play even in a more mobile future, but it will be designed to support flexibility and choice. OBJECTIVE Integrate theoretical and practices in progressive thinking for creative solutions to abstract design problems. The Hybrid ‘work+play’ operates on two levels to seamlessly achieve one objective. The nature of these two components can be vastly different, but they must support each other. Like Passive & Active activities, WORKPLAY aims to strike a symbiosis between Work (Passive in nature) and Play (Active in nature). Group 1

BREATHIFY

BREATHE CLEAN FROM FIRST TO LAST Air influence the quantity and quality of other resources

Air Quality Index by IQAir showed Klang, Selangor was the most polluted city in Malaysia during 2020. Air pollution in Malaysia mainly caused by the trans-boundary forest fire choking haze from Indonesia and the carbon monoxide emissions from the increasing car ownership. When air borne viruses came in to polluted air, especially during the Covid-19 outbreak face mask become a new identity of humans, working prolonged hours under face mask affects physically and mentally.

WHEN AIR IS NO LONGER A FREE RESOURCES Faced with challenges such as air pollution and the spread of viruses, our societal response is not to try to fix the source of the problems but to buy more products to try and mitigate their effects.

The term ‘intelligence bureau’ referred to a government department or an office or department for transacting business. The office is more than just a building – it’s a place where people come together to build connections, collaborate, and innovate. The global pandemic has accelerated an evolution of the workplace and forced businesses to reconsider when and how to best use the office in the future, posing the ultimate question:

OBJECTIVE Demonstrate comprehensive technical knowledge and skills with capability to communicate design ideas effectively to others.

What is the purpose of place?

Technical Knowledge

Integrate Anthropometrics, Ergonomics, Detailing, Office Typology, Construction + Material, Sustainability Lighting and Furniture Design

Application of Innovation and Creativity

Realization of Ideas, Crafting Creativity and Research Knowledge Implementation

Office design has shifted towards flexible working, with spaces clustered different function and support, such as a co-working and collaboration, socializing and research incubator. Research shows that people believe workers are more productive and efficient if they can change their environment.

Design Statement

We can’t see air, but it’s all around us. We couldn't live without it, but we take it entirely for granted. Nature’s air-conditioning used to keep air clean however in the post-industrial revolution years, industrial, commercial, and domestic sources have contaminated the air. When nature cannot manage these pollutants that become concentrated and exceed safe limits, this is air pollution. Air is essential to life, but we become concerned only when its quality is severely diminished.

The situation gets worse when airborne viruses came in. During the Covid-19 pandemic, face masks became a human identity. Prolonged mask-wearing during office hours makes breathing more difficult. For people with COPD, face masks are intolerable to their breathlessness otherwise causing adverse effects such as dizziness, acne, and impaired cognition. The depletion of quality air resources has made air no longer a free resource, people out there with cash in their pockets could buy air in a jar or can. Our societal response should completely fix the problem instead of mitigating its effects.

Real-time polluted city ranking on the IQAir website evident the levels of pollution in Shah Alam and Petaling Jaya could be somewhat of a concern. Vehicular emission and the transboundary open burning pollution contribute to poor air quality in our country and at its worst in 2019 hits PM2.5 concentration which is 1.6 times above the WHO annual air quality guideline value.

MayAir Sdn Bhd. air filtration manufacturer proposed their purification technology approaches to reduce airborne virus transmission indoors. ASHRAE suggested filtration with HEPA or high-MERV rated filters in HVAC systems as an effective and energy-saving way through effectively capturing viruses that clustered in larger particles. This reduces the viruses’ concentration thus minimizing the transmission risk.

The office design aims in creating a clean air accessible environment and allowing human connection while following safety measures and sustaining isolation working habits. Proposing other business expansion for the MayAir, including canned oxygen, aromatherapy helping office staffs in easing work stress and UV radiations in sanitizing. The design brings in outdoor elements, implements biophilic elements building up a scene to work with no boundaries.

SPACE REPRESENTATION

‘ZOOM IN’

Project 2: A Walkthrough Space Walkthrough is an occasion when people practicing something, without audience being present, however be able to view and experience the space virtually. It is an interactive movement in space, where students able to allow the viewers to focus on how the design and language, flows together in the created space. With the walkthrough animation, it’s gives opportunity to viewers to engage with and go through the areas in interactive manner. OBJECTIVE Execute creative thinking and innovate special details with specifications and selections to design the spatial program and ideas are to be communicated effectively by using a variety of methods. Based on the 3D representation created in SketchUp, student is required to embed a walkthrough space virtually in a more streamlined and interactive manner. The walkthrough aims to communicate the overall design of the programming proposed.

OVERALL

REFLECTION

ON MLE PROJECT

Multidisciplinary Learning Experience in this module has provided us the students a very good opportunity expose to the working environment before stepping into the design industry. Through the collaboration with the architects and quantity surveyor team, I have different perspectives on the other aspects while doing the design. I realized that achieving sustainability in a building is important in preserving precious natural resources and improving our quality of life. Such as from the structure of the building to the rate and choices of materials used, I gained knowledge that designers should take into consideration the pollution and waste reduction measures, and the enabling of re-use and recycling.

It’s a pity that 2 of my group mates left this module halfway and I must carry on with the tasks previously assigned to them. I must be able to convert the 3d models from different software like 3Ds Max, Sketchup, and Revit so that we can have a compiled work. This undoubtedly increased my workload, but I have a chance to practice working on multiple software simultaneously. In the end, going through the hardships, I manage to get along well with the other group mates in producing the design. I would hope that students are clear with their responsibility in managing a group project not to be a freerider where some of them participate passively. A moderate size group of 4 to 5 is more ideal.

Being assigned as a leader for Group 1 (Ministry of Environment and Resources) means R E S P O N S I B I L I T Y . Throughout the collaboration, it needs me frequently update my team progress to other team leaders. This pushed me to develop better communication skills pointing out some ideas and opinions with patience to explain them to some members that weren’t aware of the project. I learned to be a good listener and frequently ask for others' points of view to determine a better plan on designing the common area (ground floor) of the buildings.

Overall, the experience working with other schools’ is pleasant. The teammates have been considerate and attentive in submitting the documents on time to ease the progress. Perhaps other schools' modules should hold this project throughout the semester to increase the productivity of this module. I received feedbacks that they gain no benefits from some work done, this made them unwilling to cooperate in this team near the end of the project.

Communication has been difficult during this pandemic making all the meetings and presentations online. It’s challenging when I realized my group mates are mostly introverts, and I had to work hard to closer the bond so that they speak up their thoughts.

This MLE project is a valuable experience, and I would recommend students who are going to work in the field after months to participate as a steppingstone to gain insight into the design and construction industry.
