Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme
Cardiac rehabilitation is a programme designed to help improve your overall health by identifying and reducing the risk factors that lead to cardiovascular disease. This programme consists of two phases: inpatient education and outpatient rehabilitation.
We aim to:
• Give you a better understanding about your condition and treatment
• Work with you and/or your family to make the right lifestyle changes
• Decrease your risk of another heart attack or stroke and reduce the need for future surgery
• Empower you to exercise safely, independently and effectively
Who can benefit from this programme?
Patient who have had:
• Coronary Artery Bypass Graft surgery (CABG) or valve replacement
• Open heart surgery
• Heart attack
• Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI)
• Heart failure
• Treatment of other heart conditions
Programme overview
Phase 1:
During your hospital stay, you will receive information about your recovery process and learn how to reduce your future risk of cardiovascular disease by the cardiac nurse. A physiotherapist will teach you how to stay active at home.
Phase 2:
If eligible, your doctor will refer you to the phase 2 cardiac rehabilitation programme. This is an 8-session exercise programme conducted 2 times per week, for 1.5 - 2 hours each session. Your heart rhythm is monitored throughout the entire exercise session.
What does the programme include?
Your physiotherapist will develop an exercise plan tailored to your physical ability, fitness level and medical condition.
This programme includes:
• Assessment by physiotherapist
• Physical fitness test
• Close monitoring of your blood pressure, heart rate, heart rhythm and blood glucose level
• Cardiovascular and resistance exercises that are progressively challenging
• Flexibility exercises during cool down
• Health and exercise education
• Recommendations for other exercise programmes that can follow this programme
Please arrive in comfortable exercise attire with covered shoes.
