Design is manifested from the inside out. The process that opens hearts communicates with the beauty of the real world. Ideally designers uncover the unique identity for an object and bring that identity to light. That exposure is the key to design.

[ OBJECTIVE]
To fully integrate messaging across any medium. Based on an original director’s visual language, develop an appropriate visual system for an entire film festival. Coordinate a complex set of materials that work well together. Deliver a unified and holistic aesthetic. This aesthetic must contain the essence of the director and the unique film festival visual style.
Block Out the Light Brian De Palma’s Film Festival

[QUOT E]
I like to try to go back and develop pure visual storytelling. — B RA IN DE PA LM A
003.
[ C ONC EPT ]
“Seek in the Dark” is the film festival that I designed for Brian De Palma. I selected five of his psychological and crime thrillers. I used a documents format from the police to represent the visual system. The irregular paper size represents the evidence collected. Metal binding represents tension. The dominate grey blue color creates a cold and serious feel.
002
De Palma subjugates women because in most of his movies. The victims are always women. This gives me a chance to create another crucial element in the design, the woman’s body. The body parts of the victims are intriguing and monstrous, which create a cruel aesthetic that matches with the feeling of Brian’s films. Half-tones add more mystery to the design. Most of the half-tone elements are covering the victims’ identities. 004.

To investigate ways to communicate content and meaning of text. Applied typesetting skills, such as organization, hierarchy, layout and grid systems to redesign a book. Create typographic distinctions and hierarchy (such as headlines, subheads, text, captions) by combing typefaces. Unified the aesthetic with both type and photography.

In the shade and sun of grass blade forests, small living things had their metropolis. — NA NCY PRIC E
003.
[ C ONC EPT ]
The original book was a handbook that educated people about how to control and use insects to manage their garden. In order to make it more fun for audiences to read, I changed the entire style into a more vintage and gothic feeling. The gothic style of insect photos shows their unique beauty. The book has many levels of information; thus, I mix different types, and used different weight of type to make the hierarchy of the layout clearer.

To develop a new brand which implements compelling visual elements in a variety of media that work together as a cohesive system. Identify the brand’s audience and stakeholders, and then found and create a certain style or system to demonstrate the concept. The whole brand needs to have a consistent visual style. Develop a multi-media system. The format, type and photo style have to work as an entirety.

[ C ONC EPT ]
My topic is about educating people about the consumption of dairy products. I called my project “Mootrition”, because I use nutrition as a place for starting educational. My campaign target audience is people 15-45 who consume dairy products. Thus, the main black and white color are represented mature and scientific style. By showing people nutritional comparison information between dairy food and its alternatives, the project advocates that people start a non-dairy food life.

To challenge the approach to basic principles of typography and explore new innovative ways to communicate with text and image. Chose an interesting topic from “This American Life” radio talk show and design a book that represents both its topic and its emotions in an appropriate way. The format, type, color choice and image choice all need to match with the content of the topic.

[ C ONC EPT ]
I chose “My Undesirable talent” as my book topic. The book talks about three different stories of people who have a useless or bad talent. Each story is funny, crazy and curious. Each character in the stories is like a super hero in a motion picture. I used the style of a top-secret documentary as the visual metaphor for the book. Each story has its own folder and color. I use a lot of lines and graphic elements to create a chaotic feeling. Each layout is unique.

To investigate the communication of content and the emotional qualities of text. Choose a favorite song and design a poster to present the emotion of the song. Analyze the author’s lyrics and the emotion that the song tries to deliver, and then shoot the photography using a projector. The shadow, color and pattern are essential for the project. Fully explore the usage of the projector effect. It is a critical technique for this project.

“Sign of the times” by the Harry Styles is one of my favorite songs. This song has its own life philosophy. I also quoted some sentences from the bible. I decided to use black letters for the title of the poster. How to face birth and death is the ultimate question. The whole song immerses the listener in a calm mood within a vast environment. It reminds me of the sky, waning sunlight and the ocean. This is the reason why I finally chose sunset as the main image in the poster.

DeLorean was an American automobile manufacturer known for its car that was featured in the film Back to the Future. DeLorean tried to reinvent the American auto industry. In order to expand the future vision of this company, the new DeLorean will get into the several other industries, such as education, medical and retail. Because the core of the new DeLorean is creative and inventive, I redesigned their logo as a phoenix which represents the company reborn from its ashes. The flame and the fire of the phoenix will light up the future for humanity’s development. I chose red as the main color for the entire brand, because red represents the passion, courage and the spirit of innovation.

[ OBJECTIVE]
To challenge the approach to basic principles of typography and explore new innovative ways to communicate with text and image. Find an artist and design an exhibition for him. The exhibition not only has to show the characteristics of the artist, but also has to have a unique visual style that relates to the designer. The whole exhibition should be simple and emphasizing the character of the artist.

I chose to design an exhibition for the 16th century painter Rembrandt. He is famous for his use of light. The high contrast of light and shade is one of his unique features. His masterpieces belong in the history of classical and portrait art. For this project, I used some patterns from 16th century as graphic elements. The dark grey contrasted with small, lighter colors to add a more modern style for audiences.

In order to make each chapter easy for audiences to navigate, I created a format that resembles stairs. I used different colors that poped for each chapter. The collage book that I made is called “Time Wave.” It tells a story I wrote about a girl named Matilda who uses a time machine to travel back to WWII and changes the course of the war. I set the whole design style of it into the world of steam-punk. Steam-punk represents a golden industrial age, and it also represent how industry changed the world. The material that I found for collages are steam-punk illustrations, as well as old newspapers and wallpaper from the last century. After I finished the collage, I used Photoshop to overlay some of my collages together to make more mysterious and fantastical feeling.

As an international student, it is hard for me to find interesting places to visit when I first come to a new area. My app is about helping newcomers get involved in a new place or culture much faster. My app has a function to introduce famous places and events based on the needs of the users. It helps users avoid dangerous places and find the best and fastest ways to go. The “make accompany” function will allow users to add a friend as a partner to supervise the entire trip remotely when the user is traveling alone. Even though the partner is at home, he/she can get real-time information to keep the traveler safe.

[ C ONC EPT ]
My topic is about intergenerational care. Nowadays, aging generally becomes one of the big problems in the world. More and more seniors live in nursing homes. And the nursing house system begins to show serious problems. The psychological problems of seniors are one of them, which hasn’t been paid attention to for a while. During my research, I found that most seniors feel disconnected with others and feel isolated. They desire the company of others and psychology care. In order to solve the problem, I created All Present. The All Present program is about integrating nursing homes and preschools together. Seniors and children could meet on certain days of the week to have special activities together, like drawing, playing instruments, storytelling and so on. By doing so, seniors will have the company of children. At the same time, children will be able to learn some social skills. The goal of my thesis project will be promoting and educating this kind of mode for nursing homes, to create a win-win intergenerational care system.
