C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S , F R E S H E R ! EVEN HARRY WAS nervous stepping into Hogwarts for the first time, but he soon found like-minded friends, learned new skills and overcame great difficulties. Your fresher year may well turn out to be (nearly) as magical an adventure! Each student has a different path from fresher to graduate. I assure you that you will have time to take all your exams and collect all the required credits before graduation – but I warmly recommend that you shape your journey to reflect yourself. I encourage you to be curious. Choose interesting courses from another faculty, take part in various projects, join organisational activities, try out the committees, meet new people, form lifelong friendships and join us in changing the world for the better. The Student Union is a community that reflects its members, which is why it is full of all kinds of opportunities to pursue different hobbies, be active and influence matters. We in the Student Union – both the Board and our specialists – work for a better future for students, looking after your interests at the University, in the city and in society. We are also here to provide you with advice in case you encounter any challenges during your studies. This Fresher Guide has been made just for you, to give you some tips for the first leg of your adventure. We do not necessarily recommend that you take on all the possibilities available in university life during a single year, but marking the date of the Fresher Adventure, the largest fresher event in Finland, on your new student calendar right away is definitely recommended. Once again, my warmest congratulations on getting accepted into the University! Maybe we will meet already at the Opening Carnival! MEMBER SERVICES STUDENT CARD HYY’s members can order the joint student card of all students in Finland. The card is the easiest way to prove your student union membership and helps you get discounts on the services of VR, Matkahuolto and student restaurants as well as several other stores and services. You need to get a new year tag for the student card every year, and the tag is available at HYY’s Services Office. The year tag proves that you have paid the Student Union’s membership fee. Instructions for ordering the card and an impressive and constantly growing selection of student discounts: www.frank.fi. GUIDANCE HYY’s specialists provide members with guidance in issues such as students’ legal protection, housing, subsistence and studies at the university. Their contact information can be found on HYY’s website. YLIOPPILASLEHTI HYY provides all its members with a subscription to the Ylioppilaslehti student magazine, published three times in an academic term. The magazine, founded in 1913, deals with phenomena related to society, culture and the student world before other media have realised they exist, offering fresh perspectives, thoughts and emotions. If you are interested in writing, taking photos or illustrating for Ylioppilaslehti, please contact the editor in chief (paatoimittaja@ylioppilaslehti.fi).

STUDENT CALENDAR HYY’s members receive a new student calendar every year. The calendar features useful information on the Student Union, descriptions of all organisations operating under HYY and student benefits. You can pick up the calendar from HYY’s Services Office or the temporary year tag collection points at the beginning of the academic year. FREE LEGAL AID HYY offers its members free legal advice, provided by Pykälä, the subject organisation of law students. The majority of legal questions asked from the service concern housing, employment, family and estate law, studies and social security. The service does not provide tax advice, nor does it produce documents – although it provides guidance on drafting them and reviews finished documents. The service is on duty at 5–7 pm on Mondays and Thursdays during academic terms at Pykälä’s office, Mannerheimintie 3 B, 5th floor, 00100 Helsinki, tel. (09) 278 5005, oikeusapu@helsinki.fi. LITTLE HYY The Student Union provides its members with temporary child care at Siltavuorenpenger 3 C. The minimum age for children is 6 months, and the maximum duration of child care is four hours at a time. Further information: pikkuhyy@hyy.fi and hyy.fi.

If you have been working before starting your studies, keep your payslips just in case. You may need them later for the income checks made by Kela.

WHERE DOES ALL THE MONEY GO?

Apply for student aid as soon as you have accepted your student place and for general housing allowance when you have received an apartment. Student aid includes the study grant and a government guarantee for the student loan. You need to apply for the student loan itself from the bank. To receive student aid, you must make sufficient study progress and your other income must not exceed the annual income limit. The study grant is subject to taxation, which means that you need to take it into account in taxation if you have any other income. Use the calculators of Kela and the Tax Administration to discover your income limits and the estimated amount of your housing allowance.

Apply for a student apartment when you find out that you have received a student place at the latest, and accept the offer you receive. Apartments are fiercely competed over at the beginning of the term, and you might not get another offer.

SURVIVAL GUIDE ON SUBSISTENCE ESTIMATE YOUR MONTHLY INCOME Study grant: €250/month, for how many months per year? Study grant for the guardian of a minor child: €325/month Student loan: < €650/month Income from work: seasonal, varying, regular or none? Savings: Do you have any? For everyday use or emergencies? Assistance from relatives: None, irregular or regular?

CALCULATE YOUR HOUSING COSTS (incl. water, electricity and internet) and your housing allowance with Kela’s calculators. Use Kela’s website to see how fluctuating earnings influence the amount of housing allowance, too. Read more at kela.fi/web/en/general-housing-allowance

Get a stamp and signature from the University for Helsinki Region Transport’s (HSL) student discount application and bring an ID with you when picking up the card from HSL. The card entitles you to a 45% student discount on public transport. For further information, see www.hsl.fi/en/tickets-and-fares/discount-tickets/students. If you need any help regarding housing, student aid or subsistence, HYY’s specialist will be happy to help!

Download Frank App or order a plastic student card as soon as possible to get to use student benefits. Make the order at frank.fi.

Pay HYY’s membership fee and register for attendance by 31 August. This entitles you to use HYY’s member services and the University’s IT services. You can then get a certificate of student status from the University!

GET INTERNATIONAL AT THE UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONALITY IS INTEGRAL TO THE UNIVERSITY AND SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY RIGHT FROM THE START OF YOUR STUDIES. BESIDES YOUR LANGUAGE SKILLS, INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE WILL IMPROVE YOUR INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION ABILITIES AND INCREASE YOUR RESILIENCE, PRODUCTIVITY, UNDERSTANDING OF DIVERSITY AND ABILITY TO LEARN NEW THINGS. ALL THIS WILL BENEFIT YOU IN WORKING LIFE REGARDLESS OF THE FIELD, WHILE GETTING TO KNOW PEOPLE FROM ALL AROUND THE WORLD IS SURE TO ENRICH YOUR LIFE IN GENERAL!

EXCHANGE STUDIES We recommend that you start planning and searching for an exchange that suits your degree already at the start of your studies to get as much out of the experience as possible and to have time to improve your language skills before leaving. Exchange periods are supported with different grants, and you are eligible for student aid during your exchange. The University’s International Exchange Services are there to help and support you with everything from initial plans to returning home. INTERNATIONAL TRAINEESHIPS Acquiring international work experience is a great way to develop your skills. Erasmus+ trainee grants are available for internships within the EU for both bachelor’s and master’s studies – and even after graduation. STUDYING IN ENGLISH Improve your language skills, international expertise and understanding of international discourse in your discipline all at the same time – while meeting the international students at the University. Besides individual courses, the University has several English-language master’s programmes you can apply to after completing a bachelor’s degree in Finnish, too. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND ORGANISATIONS Several international, English-language student organisations operate in the Student Union. Organisational activities are the best way for many international students to meet Finnish students – and vice versa. You may get involved with international umbrella and co-operation organisations through these organisations, too.

C O N N E C T I N G W I T H L O C A L S I CAME TO Helsinki for the first time to do my studies on Finnish WWII history in 2017, and recently graduated from the Master’s programme in European and Nordic Studies (ENS). There are not a whole lot of places to do such studies in the world, so I ended up choosing Finland. In Helsinki, you have a choice. You can choose how you want to live the student life, both in your studies and during pastime. Because of the tuition fee, I had to prioritize my studies, and managed to finish my degree in two years. Studying was hectic, but I did not want to neglect social life. Thinking I needed a place outside of my studies to relax, I joined YAMA ry, the university anime club. I met awesome people there, enjoyed many activities, and most importantly made connections outside of my studies. The biannual anime convention in Lahti became one of the most enjoyable things in Finland for me. Connections made through hobbies can get you very far, even as an international student who has barely any previous connections in Finland. There are over 250 organizations under HYY, so surely there is something for everyone. If a specific hobby is not your thing, you could try Osakunta (Student Nations). Student Nations offer cheap housing, and you get a warm community of people who are from a specific part of Finland. I suggest experiencing Sitsit parties, preferably non-international ones. This time-honored student tradition will surely destroy your shy and quiet stereotype of Finns. Also, do not miss out on sauna sessions (I bet all organizations have sauna nights). The sauna is the most relaxing and social environment you can find. Connecting with locals might be difficult initially, with the language barrier and all. But I think it is worth it. You will learn about Finnish culture, the language, and most importantly, the student organization’s shared spaces will be like small new homes for you where you can chill out when stressed. YOUR STUDENT UNION – YOUR CALL THE STUDENT UNION HAS AROUND 26,500 MEMBERS BESIDES YOU. ALL MEMBERS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO INFLUENCE THE STUDENT UNION’S DECISIONMAKING PROCESSES BY VOTING AND RUNNING AS A CANDIDATE IN THE REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL ELECTIONS HELD EVERY OTHER YEAR. THE NEXT ELECTIONS ARE HELD IN AUTUMN 2020.

EVERY OTHER YEAR, 60 members are elected into HYY’s Representative Council to make decisions on the Student Union’s major policies, such as its constitution and budget. The Student Union’s annual budget is around 3 million euros, which we get from our company, Ylva, and our membership fees. The Representative Council appoints the Student Union’s Board every year, and the Board is responsible for HYY’s practical activities: what kind of events are organised, what issues are promoted in our advocacy work for the students of the University of Helsinki and what kind of premises and grants are allocated to student organisations. HYY’s Representative Council and Board also appoint the student representatives to the decision-making bodies of the University of Helsinki. If you have any questions, requests or ideas, you can contact the members of the Representative Council or the Student Union’s Board at any time. Further information on HYY’s Representative Council and Board is available online at hyy.fi/en/our-organisation.

WHO WOULD MAKE THE DECISIONS AT THE UNIVERSITY IF NOT YOU? WHY CAN ALL EXAMS NOT BE TAKEN IN ELECTRONIC EXAM ROOMS OR ONLINE? ARE THERE NEVER ENOUGH SET BOOKS? IS THERE TOO LITTLE CONTACT TEACHING? DO YOU SOMETIMES FEEL LIKE YOU CANNOT GET GUIDANCE FOR YOUR STUDIES?

ONE OF THE best things about Finnish university democracy is that students have power at the University, too. Students have their own representatives everywhere in the University’s decision-making: in degree programmes, faculties and the Board of the entire University. Student representatives ensure that students’ interests are not trampled upon when making decisions that concern studies and student life. They voice students’ opinions in meetings, advance and defend issues that are important to students and develop the University to look increasingly like its students. Anyone can become a voice for students. The Student Union selects new student representatives to each degree programme and faculty again this autumn, which means that you can start influencing things already in your fresher year! You will get information on when the calls for applications open in September by following the Student Union’s website, hyy.fi, our Facebook page and our newsletter for members. Student representatives also need help from you and your subject organisation. Let your student representative know of any problems you encounter in your studies, and they can take the matter forward. All student representatives can be found at halloped.fi. You should, of course, also give feedback directly to the University – students and their opinions matter!

FRESHER_GUIDE_2019

ORGANISATIONAL ACTIVITIES – LIFE IS OUTSIDE LECTURE HALLS THERE ARE AROUND 250 different student organisations operating under us. Their members are passionate about their own subject and student life, home region, political ideology, hobby or sport – and, above all, the students they share their enthusiasm with. Student life blooms in organisations. They are made up of celebrations and dinner parties, trips and travels, hangouts and debates, sweating and tinkering – whatever the members happen to come up with! The best memories of your time studying are usually formed outside lecture halls, together with like-minded friends. Organisations help you make new friends and learn skills you would not learn otherwise – from organising parties for hundreds of people to laying out magazines and from negotiation skills to project management.

THERE ARE MANY KINDS OF ORGANISATIONS Subject and faculty organisations are linked to a specific subject or faculty, whereas student nations are formed around geographic regions. Hobby organisations allow you to pursue a hobby together – sports, crafts, games or food, for instance.

You can also meet the organisations at the University’s Opening Carnival on 2 September, where they will be showing off their activities and handing out information on events and hangouts aimed at new members. If you are feeling shy, ask your friends to join you or suggest that your tutors organise a visit to a certain organisation’s event for your entire fresher group. MAY DAY, 30 APRIL–1 MAY 2020 Havis Amanda, Ullanlinnanmäki The most important celebration for students is, of course, May Day! Students often start celebrating May Day well in advance, but at the latest, the bubbly drinks are popped open at the crowning of the Havis Amanda statue, or Manta, at 6 pm on 30 April. Student unions take turns crowning the statue, and the University of the Arts has their turn in 2020. HYY’s next turn will come around in 2022! We recommend continuing the celebration at Ullanlinnanmäki with the reception of May Day on 1 May. Afterwards, the festive mood rises even higher during the legendary May Day picnic, with numerous student organisations and residents of the city celebrating together. Ylva, sustainable business Ylva is a company owned by HYY – as HYY’s member, you are thus one of our owners. Ylva’s goal is to make Helsinki a more fun, sustainable and international city. Our business operations focus on real estate, investment activities and the HoReCa sector, which refers to hotel, restaurant and catering business. Defender of education Sustainable solutions are at the core of Ylva’s activities. Climate change mitigation cannot rest upon the actions of individual people alone – at Ylva, we believe in the role that companies have in finding solutions. Working actively at the intersection of science and economy gives us the opportunity to use the latest research findings to develop and provide our services. Ylva has a long history of fostering responsible solutions.

More fun, easy and sustainable What kind of presence does Ylva have in your everyday life? Ylva owns the entire Kaivopiha block. When you walk from the Helsinki Railway Square towards the student houses, you are walking on your own property. During the next few years, Ylva is making the city even more vibrant and functional by reforming the surroundings of the Kaivopiha property. In 2020, Ylva starts construction work on Lyyra in Hakaniemi (lyyra.fi). Lyyra is a city block of science and economy that combines new services, interesting restaurants, and apartments meant for international researchers. The UniCafe restaurants are a concrete part of Ylva that you see every day. With UniCafe, making smart choices is easy. Delicious, ethical food and affordable lunches for students are at the heart of UniCafe’s operations.

Accumulating the Student Union’s assets at the expense of climate would be completely untenable.

FRESHER_GUIDE_2019

Company that makes the best student life possible The most important task of Ylva is to bring in profits for its owner, HYY. Ylva pays dividends from the profits of its business operations to HYY, and the Student Union uses these funds to finance its own activities. Ylva helps the Student Union cover two thirds of its expenses, and our goal is for the Student Union to have no membership fees at all by 2025. Students also have the opportunity to directly influence Ylva’s operations. Students make up the majority of Ylva’s Board members. The unique combination of student members and assessors on Ylva’s Board has made it possible for Ylva to play a pioneering role in many issues related to responsibility for several decades now.

According to the relevant Government Decree, the quality of student meals must meet general health and nutritional criteria. The recommendations on energy and nutrient intake are based on the recommendations of the National Nutrition Council of Finland. A student meal should cover around one third of students’ daily energy needs. In practice, this means that the amount of energy that a student meal contains should be 700– 800 kcal (2.9–3.3 MJ) on average but at least 500 kcal (2.1 MJ) and at most 1 000 kcal (4.2 MJ). The recommended average proportions of energy nutrients out of the total amount of energy (E%, range in parentheses) in the meals are as follows: fat 30 (25–35) E%, protein 15 (10–20) E%, and carbohydrates 55 (50–60) E%. Meals should include a main dish, a high-energy side dish (potato, barley, rice, pasta, or grain mix) and other components (high-fibre and low-salt bread, spread that is low in saturated and trans fats, fat-free milk or sour milk, fresh vegetables and/or salad, and oil-based dressing). A meal that follows these criteria covers around one third of daily energy needs, has a fat content providing a maximum of 35% of the total energy, with a maximum of one third of the fat being saturated and trans fats, and contains a maximum of 40% of the recommended daily intake of salt (≤ 2.8 g/meal). Meals that do not follow the above criteria must still adhere to the principles of healthy nutrition and have at least the other components of the meal, described above, follow the criteria. If the main dish of the meal does not meet the criteria of the recommendations, the meal as a whole cannot be guaranteed to meet the recommendations either. Two thirds of the fat must be unsaturated. Saturated and trans fats should account for a maximum of 10% of the total energy (E%) of the meal.
