TRD >> EDITOR’S LETTER LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Relocation Discombobulation I’ve just completed a cross-country move—a five-month process that has discombobulated me in more ways than one! After living in San Diego for 27 years, we’ve resettled in Charlotte, North Carolina. I feel as though I’ve relocated to a completely different planet! Everything that I’m familiar with is gone—from hills to hike and beaches to enjoy to decent Mexican food and making hot sauce from homegrown Habañero peppers. In their places we have trees (TONS of trees!) and creeks, southernfried chicken, and lots of undeveloped land. There’s one thing that I really, really miss: young friends. I don’t have a small group of teenagers that I lead in a Bible study each week. I don’t have a couple of youth worship bands that I coach and rehearse. I don’t have a couple of JumpStart churches that I’m helping to get their youth ministries up and running. Since ministry happens person-to-person, not program-toperson, I know that developing those relationships will take time. I know that eventually I’ll again be elbow deep in teenage relationships, church ministry, and worship music. It’s just that right now, I’m missing those things. Luckily, I have my role with interlínc to keep me “in the loop” with youth ministry while I get reestablished here in North Carolina. I don’t have young people to work alongside right
now, but I do have youth leaders. A bunch of them! All over the country. Youth leaders who volunteer to write the Bible studies that accompany each of the music and theme videos on the Music Video Loop 87 DVD and download. You really should download all the studies—they’re an awesome resource to have on your computer! Go to interlinc-online.com and you’ll see what I mean! A second resource is included with this issue of interlinc’s Music Video Loop 87: the Hoovey “Behind The Scenes” Youthworker Guide. This resource will help you to take full ministry advantage of a film that will have an “underground” appeal to your kids. Hoovey is a sports movie that’s not about sports. It’s the true story of a family who experienced some of what the patriarch Job did (you know the story, right?) and how they overcame adversity with faith, determination, and love. You’re going to like this movie! I’m enjoying this bit of respite from the craziness of a hectic schedule, and can hardly wait to get back at it. I hope you’re experiencing all the blessings and sense of wonder that being used by God brings. Leading teenagers to faith in Christ, and then seeing them grow in their relationship with Him, is a real privilege!
Godspeed,
Ken McCoy Editor

Theme Zeal
Objective
In this lesson students will learn about others who lived life BIG, and they will be challenged to do the same.
Warm Up
Divide students into two groups. Charge each group with building the BIGGEST human pyramid. There are no points for style or creativity, the ONLY criteria is BIG. When the mayhem is over, discuss:
The Video
Have the students watch the video, and answer these questions:
• What does the phrase “do life big” mean to you? • What do you have to do to hear the voice inside? • What is that voice saying? • Are you afraid to change your atmosphere? • What are you afraid of? • Are you more afraid of being on top or on the bottom?
• What was the hardest part of building your pyramid?
The Bible is full of characters who did life BIG. Divide the students into small groups. Assign each group a person from the list of Bible characters. The groups should read about that person and answer the questions. Then have the groups come back together, paraphrase the story about their chosen character, and share their answers. You may want to provide the chapters pre-printed along with highlighters and markers so that the students can do some inductive study before answering the questions in their small groups. • Samuel: 1 Samuel 3 • David: 1 Samuel 17
• Was it scarier being on the top or the bottom?
• Daniel: Daniel 1
• Did fear keep you from going bigger?
• Esther: Esther 2
• Rahab: Joshua 2 & 6 • Abigail: 1 Samuel 25 Inductive activities: • Come up with a symbol (such as a star) to represent the character you chose, and draw it next to every sentence about him or her. • Underline any descriptive words about the character. • Draw a squiggly line under anything about fear. • Circle any courageous words or actions.

HOOVEY
Opening Nationwide January 31, 2015

INTRODUCTION A sports movie that’s not just about sports. A film with so many teaching points, you could run a month-long series from it. A movie that will engage the guys and the girls in your group. Sound too good to be true? Hoovey could well be all that. And more. Hoovey could be one of those “undiscovered gems” that you keep your eyes out for—an independent film that proves to be a hit with teenagers. It won’t wow your young friends with explosions, or 3D effects, or computergenerated animations. It’s a movie based on a true story about a teenaged basketball player, and how he and his family/school/town respond to adversity. And, it won Best Feature Film at the recent Sunscreen Film Festival West! A key line from the film is when Hoovey’s dad tells him, “Bad things happen, but what makes a man is what he does with it.” When you take your group to see Hoovey, you’ll have an

excellent setup for a month-long series based on the themes in the film. We’ve put together all the resources you need to use Hoovey as an important piece of your youth ministry efforts.
group excited about the film and generating some momentum leading up to seeing it.
The Film When promising high school basketball player Eric “Hoovey” Elliott collapses on the court, doctors discover a life-threatening brain tumor. Hoovey will survive the high-risk surgery, but at what cost? Can he relearn to walk, read, even to see clearly? The road is long, and meanwhile overwhelming medical bills threaten to undo everything his parents, Jeff and Ruth, have taken a lifetime to build.
Hoovey is taking a different approach to getting the film in front of audiences. Instead of a big, flashy opening in thousands of theaters, the producers are planning on using the auditoriums, sanctuaries, and worship centers of churches and schools instead. We think that will lend a cool “underground” vibe to this movie—something that every teenager likes.
With seemingly no one to turn to—but with tenacity and love born of faith—an entire family regains its footing. Hoovey learns to read again, to dribble and shoot a basketball and, finally, stepping out in faith, he’s back on court for another shot at his dream. The Strategy When we let you know about an upcoming film, we generally try to load you up with great resources that you can use in the weeks leading up to the film’s opening weekend. Using that strategy works well for getting your
This movie is different.
In addition, there are so many teaching themes in this film that using it as the starting point for a month-long series makes total sense. So, what you have here are the resources you need to take your young friends to see Hoovey, and then follow up that experience with four Bible studies that use scenes from the film to teach Biblical truth. With the “Hoovey Event” Bible study and clip, you have FIVE youth meeting plans! We know that you’ll make good use of these materials. Our prayers are with you! Ken McCoy

A YOUTHWORKER’S PERSPECTIVE I look forward to taking my family and my students to see this movie. Life can change in an instant, turning your whole world upside down. That is exactly what happens to firefighter Jeff Elliott and his wife Ruth who are living their dream in the golden Midwest. They are high school sweethearts, married, with two beautiful and healthy children, a family farm, horses, sports, and church groups – the whole American Dream come true. And then one winter’s day, teenage son Eric “Hoovey” Elliott collapses at high school basketball practice. He is rushed to the hospital, where the doctors find a tumor the
Page H3
size of an orange at the base of his brain. Unless a surgery that risks the boy’s ability to walk, talk, and perhaps even survive is performed immediately, Hoovey’s young life will end before it truly even begins. In a grueling eight-hour procedure, the tumor is removed. Hoovey survives. But for the Elliott family, life and dreams will never be the same.
faces like Cody Linley (unless you are a fan of the Disney Channel and/or Dancing With The Stars.) And while Patrick Warburton is known for his hilarious, wisecracking, dry sense of humor, he brings an authentic, heart-felt performance as the dad, Jeff Elliot. Cody is also believable as a typical small-town teenager. These kids actually look like kids!
I’ve been taking my youth groups to movies for well over a decade. Believe me, I have sat through my share of “bad” mainstream films. I’ve also sat through my share of bad “Christian” films. I’ve been critical of some popular Christian films, and trust me – I’ve heard about it. It’s been my experience that even with recognizable actors, there is too much cheese and too little money to make a high quality movie.
Then, there is the story. I loved the story of Hoovey! Now, I will readily admit that I’m a sucker for true stories—especially true stories involving sports. I’ll watch Miracle, Rudy, Radio, or When the Game Stands Tall anytime, anyplace. Hoovey drew me in and kept me interested the entire time. Besides being very realistic (even the scene involving the three “strangers”), this story shows us the power of a loving family who sticks together through some very difficult days.
To my surprise, Hoovey is different. While the production of the film is not on par with summer blockbusters or the list of this year’s Oscar nominees, it is much higher than the straight-to-DVD movies that are out there. The score is well done and the edits make sense. It was clear to me that Director Sean McNamara knew what he wanted, and made it happen.
We get to experience the relationship between Hoovey and his dad. We get to see them play together, talk to each other, hug, and pray together. I realize that Hoovey probably won’t win many big awards this year, but it won me over. And I am looking forward to taking my group. Todd Pearage

TIMELINE Here’s a suggested timeline that you can follow as you prepare to make the most of this Hoovey opportunity to reach kids and build momentum for your group. Now Read through this material – You need to familiarize yourself with the “Scope and Sequence” of what has been provided for you. Then you can customize this material to fit your specific situation. Determine when you’ll take your group to the movie – January can be a “dead month” on the youth ministry calendar. Recovering from all the Christmas activities, and planning for winter retreat can make January kind of dull. So, Hoovey comes to your rescue! The plan is for the movie to show for three weeks beginning January 31st. If you’re up for it, how cool would it be to have a ton of youth groups see the film on that first Saturday night?!

Six Weeks Out Form a Hoovey Team – You’ll need help if you’re going to make the most of this ministry opportunity. Pull together a team of adults who can help you with the various needs of this kind of program. Put different people in charge of Prayer, Publicity, Transportation, Ticket sales, and Programming. Have them start work immediately. Have a Parents’ Meeting – Show the movie trailer to the parents, talk about your plans, answer questions, get feedback, sign up volunteers, and PRAY! Show the Trailer – Let the excitement begin by showing the trailer to your youth group and talking about the ministry potential of this opportunity. Five Weeks Out Celebrate Christmas – Concentrate on having the best Christmas season your youth group and your family have ever had! Four Weeks Out Begin Promoting – In addition to your regular publicity methods, consider doing some of these: • Texting – Start by sending “What’s a ‘Hoovey’?” texts to your students. • Ringtones/Themes – Have a “Who Has The
Coolest Basketball Phone?” contest each week during your youth meetings, with the winner of the previous meeting taking on the challengers. Judge phones on the basis of coolest desktop, ringtones, etc. Award the final winner two free tickets to the movie, one for him or her and one for a pre-Christian friend. Initiate Prayer Effort – Unfortunately, many youth leaders make great plans and then merely pray that God will bless their efforts. You need prayer team members who will each take on one or two students from your group and pray for them daily – that those students will be bold and invite their friends to the film. Show the Trailer – Keep building the enthusiasm for this film. Three Weeks Out Keep Praying – Ask your students to identify two “I wanna ask ‘em” friends that your prayer team can start praying for. Keep Promoting – Get creative with basketballthemed ideas that you can use at youth meetings. For instance, you could have a basketball bounce across the stage (or screen) just before announcements. Also, you could have a smell-off, where you bring in some stinky/sweaty jerseys from the schools’ teams (both guys and girls) and have blindfolded contestants take a whiff and guess whether the jersey is from the guys’ team or girls’ team. We are sure your creativity will go wild with these kinds of ideas. Place the movie posters in the best places and have lots of flyers available.
TRD << HOOVEY
Start Selling Tickets – Do what some professional football teams do and sell only pairs of tickets. That way you’ll encourage your students to bring an unchurched friend with them to the movie.
Confirm Tickets – Make sure you have enough ordered to handle inevitable lastminute additions. Keep praying for the kids, promoting the movie, and selling tickets.
Three Weeks Out Keep Praying – Your Prayer Team could plan a prayer chain to be in action during your Hoovey movie showing and event. Keep Promoting – Keep sending out those texts and emails, and handing out those flyers. Have a Hoovey insert about your event placed in your church’s bulletin, and ask to make an announcement from the pulpit during your church’s services. Keep Selling Tickets – By now you should have an idea if you need to snag even more seats in the showing.
Movie Week Use the Hoovey Event guide (that features Coach Wilson’s “We” speech from the movie) for your Sunday morning or midweek program. Five-Senses – A teenager’s Hoovey movie experience does not start when they sit in the chair at the cinema; it begins when they pull into the parking lot at the church. Plan for what the “arrival and check in” area at your church will be by asking the “five senses” questions: what you want kids to SEE when they get to the church? What do you want them to HEAR? TOUCH? TASTE? SMELL? Reconfirm Transportation – Make sure you have one or two cars on standby in case you have a lot of “walk ups” – kids who just “show up” to see the movie and who you had no idea were coming. Reconfirm Ticket Count – See “Reconfirm Transportation” – You’re better off having a few too many tickets than too few. Sign-In – Prepare “Hoovey’s Team” (cards that the kids fill out) so you can get the contact information on each student attending the movie with your group.
Two Weeks Out Phone-chain – Initiate a program to call each student on your list, talk to them about going to the movie, and ask about the friends they’re bringing with them. Report any new names of friends to the prayer team. Show the Trailer – You never know who will be seeing it for the first time! Finalize Transportation – Make sure you have enough vehicles and drivers. Gather all the materials that you plan to have in each vehicle.
Page H5
For Four Weeks After Follow Up – Have someone personally contact each student who attended the movie with your youth group. Invite each student to the followup Hoovey series of youth meetings. Hoovey Series – Use the four additional Bible study plans in the weeks after seeing the film. They are built around important clips from the movie, and use the film as a hook on which to hang spiritual truth. Send Reports to Interlínc – We would LOVE to see photos and videos of you and your group attending a screening, or from the follow-up series of Bible studies! Send your files and links to hooveythemovie@interlinc-online.com.

“WHERE DID I CHOKE?” Two scenes from Hoovey are crucial to understanding the experiences of the Elliott family—and for making sense of the turmoil in our own experiences. The first comes as Hoovey realizes that he may never play basketball again. Hoovey sits in a chair in front of Coach Wilson’s desk and asks, “Why is this happening, Coach? What did I do wrong?” Coach takes a long breath, and tells a story. “So, uh, the good Lord was having a talk with the devil one day, bragging on his man, Job. ‘See how he loves me? Serves me?’ ‘Well,’ says the devil, ‘Why wouldn’t he? You’ve given him everything. Money. Power. Land. Children. Let me take it away from him, and watch him curse you to your face.’ And God said, ‘Uh, okay.’ So, the devil does. He takes everything. Leaves old Job with nothing—sitting in the dirt, covered with boils. Finally, old Job had had enough. What do you reckon he said?” Hoovey thinks for a moment, and responds, “It was all His to begin with.” Then, a realization comes to him. Hoovey says, “He didn’t do anything wrong.” “Neither did you,” says Coach.

The second scene occurs when Jeff comes to the end of his endurance. He lists for Ruth all the losses they’ve endured, and then says, “I played by the rules this whole way. I’ve done everything right, and this is what I’ve got to show for it? To just watch everything slip away?” Then he asks, “Where did I screw up, Ruth? Where did I choke? Tell me—you gotta tell me, because I need to know.” That’s our knee-jerk, immediate reaction to tragedy, difficulty, stress, problems, and crisis. We innately believe that we have somehow earned this situation by doing something wrong. We ask, “What have I done to deserve this?” We wonder, “Why is God punishing me?” It’s the oldest pagan belief in humankind. The book of Job is the oldest one in the Bible. It presents the common misconception that we deserve the difficulty we experience, and we earn the blessings we receive.
admits that he wants to ask the “Why?” question of God. He confesses that he’d be able to handle his adversity much better if he could just know why it was happening. Job never gets to ask his question. When God appears to him and challenges him, Job never does ask the “Why?” or “Where did I choke?” questions. Instead, he says, “Before now I’d only heard about You. But, now I’ve experienced You myself. And you know what? I’m good. Really. It’s all good.” Job, and Hoovey, and Jeff, wanted to know what they’d done to earn God’s wrath. But the answer to their question was God’s presence. Experiencing God, even in the middle of (or especially because of) excruciating circumstances, is what we all long for. Hoovey is a movie that will allow you to teach this hard lesson to your teenaged friends.
Nothing could be further from the truth. If you talk with Jeff and Ruth Elliott (and we have), the Biblical account of Job soon comes into the conversation. They totally relate to having lost so much that they ask the questions, “What did I do wrong?” and “Where did I choke?” They’ve been there, done that. Job wanted to ask God those same questions. After maintaining his innocence while enduring the subtle (and downright blatant) accusations of wrongdoing by his three friends, Job finally

ROLE MODELS In 1993 Charles Barkley declared, “I’m not a role model… just because I dunk a basketball doesn’t mean I should raise your kids.” A statement like that begs the question, “Who should be our role models?” The Hoovey film addresses that question head on—and I, for one, agree with their answer. Let’s unpack Sir Charles’ statement a bit. Webster’s defines a role model as someone who another person admires and tries to be like, or a person whose behavior in a particular role is imitated by others. The simple yet profound truth is that just because someone has a title or position it does not necessarily make him or her a role model. I personally never wanted to be like Charles Barkley. Not because I didn’t want to dunk a basketball— I still dream about that—but because personally I think he’s a “knucklehead” (to use his word). I understand what Barkley was trying to say—if there were kids in 1993 that admired him and wanted to imitate him, then he WAS a role model—he just wasn’t the best role model. My guess is he knew that, and that’s why he said what he said. Hoovey has several very positive role models in his life: his parents, coaches, friends, and pastor. But instead of looking at the who, let’s look at why these people make good role models.
Faithfulness In the film, Hoovey’s parents, particularly his dad, have a huge influence in him. Time after time we see his parents supporting, encouraging, and loving their son. There is a scene in the hospital that is especially touching. Right before Hoovey’s surgery, we see mom and dad praying with him. Then we hear his mom narrate, “It is the one thing every parent fears the most. Something happening to our child—something we are powerless to stop, and there is nothing you can do, but pray.” Their example of faithfulness is both inspiring and encouraging to see on the big screen. In order for us to be good role models, we too need to be faithful in our prayers. We need to regularly be praying for our students. I once heard Jason Ostrander say, “We need to spend less time talking to our students about God and more time talking to God about our students.” We also need to be faithful with our presence. We need to be there in good times and in bad. Over the years, I’ve have had the privilege of sitting with students for laughs and crazy big celebrations. I’ve also sat with students at funerals and with them as they processed the news that their parents were splitting up. It’s not always easy, but we need to be faithful in order to be good role models. Tough Love Another role model in the film is Coach Ed Wilson. I love how Coach Wilson is portrayed as a tough-as-nails, no nonsense kind of guy. He demands excellence from his players and expects them to give everything they have to accomplish their
Page H7
best. He also does not tolerate his players misbehaving. One of the reasons why I found this so encouraging is because we live in a culture where everyone thinks we need to be “friends” with students. Often times we expect too little and avoid correcting bad behavior because we want to “be relatable” with the teenagers. Nobody wants to be the “bad guy.” I think Coach Wilson was okay with being the “bad guy”—and that made him a great man and an even better role model. I would encourage you to set the bar high, and do whatever is required to help your students do great things for God. Love and Support Finally, we see that Hoovey has adults and peers in his life that are loving and supportive. Everyone—from his family and girlfriend to his doctor and the fans there to see a great game—showers him with affirmation. Imagine how our students would feel if they saw their youth leaders as their “biggest fan.” Imagine how they would feel if every time they walked into church or to youth group they felt genuine love and support. You and I both know that we have students who have no idea what that is like in their home. As youth leaders, we have an extraordinary opportunity to be role models. In fact, like it or not, we are role models. The question is, “What kind of role models are we?” Todd Pearage

HOOVEY EVENT Leader Guide Theme Selflessness Objective Students will learn that laying aside their own desires in order to serve the needs of others is the only way to achieve success and satisfaction. Warm Up Play some games that require the participation of each team member to succeed. Here is one activity you can try. Helium Stick – You’ll need a tent pole or similar long, thin, and light rod. Line up teams in two rows facing each other. Introduce the Helium Stick – a long, thin, light rod. Ask participants to point their index fingers and hold their arms out. Lay the Helium Stick down on their fingers. Before you let go, get the group to adjust their finger heights until the Helium Stick is horizontal and everyone’s index fingers are touching the stick. Explain that the challenge is to lower the Helium Stick to the ground. The catch: each person’s fingers must be in contact with the Helium Stick at all times. Pinching or grabbing the pole is not allowed – it must rest on top of fingers. Reiterate to the group that if anyone’s finger is caught not touching the Helium Stick, the task will be restarted. Let the task begin. Particularly in the early stages, the Helium Stick has a habit of floating up rather than coming

down, causing much laughter. Ham it up, act surprised, and ask what are they doing raising the Helium Stick instead of lowering it! For added drama, jump up and pull it down! The secret (keep it to yourself) is that there is no Helium in the stick! The collective upwards pressure tends to be greater than the weight of the stick. Often, the more a group tries, the more it floats. Some teams or individuals may be inclined to give up after several minutes of trying—they might believe that the task is not possible or that it is too hard. In response, suggest that the team stop the task, discuss their strategy, and then have another go. If a team seems to be succeeding too fast, be particularly vigilant about fingers not touching the pole. Also, make sure participants lower the pole all the way onto the ground. You can add further difficulty by adding a large washer to each end of the stick and explain that the washers should not fall off during the exercise, otherwise it’s a restart. Eventually the group needs to calm down, concentrate, and very slowly and patiently lower the Helium Stick. Easier said than done! Transition Debrief the group about the activity by discussing these questions: • What was the initial reaction of the group? • How well did the group cope with this challenge? • What skills were required to be successful as a group? • What creative solutions were suggested and how were they received?
• What would an outside observer have seen as the strengths and weaknesses of the group? • What roles did people play? • What did each group member learn about him/her self as an individual? • What other situations (e.g., at school, home, or work) are like the Helium Stick?
Movie Clip #1 – We Set up the situation so that your students will know what’s going on in the film before you show the clip: Eric “Hoovey” Elliott is a high school basketball player. The scene you’re about to show happens on the first day of Varsity tryouts. Coach Wilson is about to give his famous opening day speech. Here’s the most important part of that speech from the movie script: COACH A team is defined as a group, comprised of individuals, united in the pursuit of a singular goal. This definition is summarized best in a two-letter pronoun, and that word serves as the foundation and code of this team. The word is: WE. (Camera tracks down the line of players, settling on each face as the coach speaks the wisdom of a life well lived—shaping, molding and leading young men in the most critical years of their lives.) COACH Five men represent fifteen, every second of every game. Fifteen represent a school of over a thousand. That thousand represents a thousand families, their town, and nation... WE!

Transition Follow up the film clip with these discussion questions: • What differences are there between a team sport and individual sports? • Which virtues does a person learn by being involved in team sports? • How would you describe the virtues of an individual sport athlete? Bible Study Hand out the Student Guides. Explain that the concept of “We” is very important, and reinforced by what God has shown us in His Word. Living for “We” is upside-down and backwards from what everyone else is doing— living for “Me.” Donald Trump said, “Show me someone without an ego, and I’ll show you a loser.” Our “selfie” world certainly does not help us to have a “We” focus. Let’s see what we can learn from the Bible about this subject. Ask for volunteers to read the verses. Then, discuss what was read by using the same discussion questions under each Scripture. Be sure to add in your own questions too! Philippians 2:2 – …make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but to the interests of the others. • How would you describe being “likeminded”? • Since this verse tells us to have the “same” love, we probably tend to have “different” loves. How could you tell if a group like ours had different loves?
• How could you tell if a group like ours had the same love? • Obviously, being “one in spirit” doesn’t mean cheering for the same team—but what comes to your mind when you think of that phrase? Philippians 2:3-4 – Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but to the interests of the others. • Describe, if you dare, a situation in which you were motivated by selfish ambition. How did it work out for you? • How can you tell if “vain conceit” is behind someone’s actions? • Note the word “nothing” in that first sentence. It seems pretty all-inclusive, right? What would be so wrong about tolerating a little ambition or selfishness? • What’s your definition of “humility”? • The phrase “value others above yourselves” seems to be completely opposite from what we are otherwise taught. Does this phrase mean that we are supposed to be “doormats” for others to wipe their feet on? If not, why not? • Have you ever observed a friend looking to the interests of others rather than his or her own interests? If you have, what made you notice what was happening?
Page H9
• How, really, does a person “follow” Jesus? Put the second sentence into your own words. Make sure you pay attention to the “for me” clause. • What did you learn from paraphrasing Jesus’ comment? Wrap Up Summarize the discussion that you’ve had with your group. Be sure to point out that what God requires of us might seem impossible, but that He has given us completely new capabilities when we gave our lives to Him and the Holy Spirit indwelled us. Finish by explaining about going to see the Hoovey film. Talk about the uniqueness of the experience (going to see a movie, but not going to a theater—that kind of thing), and the importance of bringing an unchurched friend along to see the film too. Then, close in prayer. The reproducible Student Guide for this session is available at interlinc-online.com/hooveyresources Check out ONE WORD "We" on Page H11 Ken McCoy
Luke 9:23-24 – (Jesus speaking) “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.” • An athlete knows all about self-denial. How? • What do you think of when you consider the phrase “take up their cross”? • How often are we to figuratively shoulder that instrument of torture and death?

Movie Clip #2 Motive
Objective Students will learn that WHY they do something is often more important than WHAT they do. Warm Up Play a few rounds of “Would You Rather?” Here are some ideas to get you started. Would you rather… • Go back in time to meet your ancestors, or go forward in time and meet your greatgrandchildren? • Go on a dream vacation for two weeks, or spend five days with anyone in the world while staying in your hometown? • Be able to fly (without a plane), or have the ability to read minds? • Be extremely famous, or extremely wealthy? • Be fluent in any language, or a master of any musical instrument? • Have more time, or more money? • Have free Starbucks for a year, or free iTunes forever? • Watch a movie with no sound (or subtitles), or listen to a movie without picture?

Transition After a few rounds ask: • What was the hardest “Would You Rather” question? Why? • How did you determine your answers? Let’s discuss one of my favorite scenes in the Hoovey film. As a teenager, Hoovey is popular, athletic, and well liked. But he is about to be tested in ways he never could have imagined. The Video This scene happens early in the film, when Hoovey is getting ready to try out for the varsity basketball team. His dad gives him a cross necklace that belonged to Hoovey’s grandfather. Hoovey asks him if it will help and Jeff jokingly says, “You’ll never miss another three again.” Then he says, “It’s to remind you of what’s really important.” Here’s how the script reads: Jeff pulls into the school’s main drive, stops at the main entrance. He reaches into his jacket pocket, and produces a tiny, and tarnished by the years sterling silver cross on a chain. He hands it to Hoovey. JEFF I want you to have something. It was your grandfather’s. HOOVEY You think it’ll help? JEFF You’ll never miss another three. It’s to remind you of what’s really important. Hoovey examines it closely, and puts it around his neck. HOOVEY Thanks, Dad. JEFF Sure thing, Poindexter.
Jeff laughs it off as Hoovey gets out and slams the door good-naturedly, “sneering” at his Dad. Jeff taps his heart with his fist, and points to his boy. Hoovey returns the sign, and heads into school.
Transition Follow up the film clip with these discussion questions: • What is Hoovey’s dad saying by giving him a cross? • Do you agree with his dad that how we play (our testimony) is more important than the score? • So, would you rather win a championship by cheating, or lose a championship knowing you played with integrity? Bible Study Taking this conversation off the basketball court and into everyday life, discuss… • What is the most important “thing” in your life? • When are we challenged to compromise on that belief? • How does knowing what is most important to us help us make the better choices? Ask for volunteers to read the verses below. Then, discuss what was read by using the discussion questions. Be sure to add in your own questions too!
TRD << HOOVEY
Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Isaiah 55:8 – “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. Philippians 4:6-7 – Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. • Why does it make sense to ask God to help us make better decisions? • When God is more important than anything else, how do we respond to His plans?
James 1:5 – If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. • According to this verse, why is asking God for wisdom a good idea? • When was the last time you really needed wisdom to make a decision? What happened? Matthew 6:33 – But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. • When God truly is most important in our lives, what does He promise? Wrap Up Summarize the discussion that you’ve had with your group. Let the students know that you understand how difficult it is to keep God in that “most important” position. Share an example of your own struggle of when you have put yourself or your own plans in that position. Then remind them of the truth in Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Close in prayer.

One Word Each season, hundreds of coaches motivate and inspire their athletes to excel by discovering One Word for their team. This One Word gives them purpose and power that reminds them of their mission, while maintaining focus and keeping their passion alive throughout the season. That is exactly what Coach Wilson did with his players on the Olympia High School basketball team. Their One Word was simply…WE. It became the foundation to everything they did, and the team became unified as they lived out WE on and off the court. The local FCA representative, Josh Carter, worked closely with Hoovey and his teammates throughout the season, and he saw God do amazing things with the Olympia basketball team that discovered WE is more important than ME. getoneword.com Dan Britton Executive Vice President of Fellowship of Christian Athletes

Movie Clip #3 Self-Image
Objective Students often feel “stuck” with their reputation (our “name”), and with a “new name” they can see themselves in a new light. Warm Up Nicknames – Put this list on the screen and have the kids work in pairs to identify the real names associated with the nicknames. Only give the group a couple of minutes, or they’ll use their smartphones to look up the answers. • Che Guevara (Ernesto Guivara; nickname means “Hey!”) • Pocahontas (Matoaka; nickname means, umm, “a small, ‘loose’ woman.”) • Wild Bill (James Buter Hickok; his nickname started out as “Duck Bill” because of his huge nose and protruding upper lip – he replaced “Duck” with “Wild” when he became a showman.) • Billy the Kid (Henry McCarty? Nobody knows for sure. Nickname was either because he was young, or small, or because a bartender insulted him by saying he looked like a scared little goat. Also, he had a wispy little goatee beard.)

• Plato (Aristocles; nickname was given to him by his wrestling coach – it means “broad” or “really fat.”) • Caligula (Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus; nickname means “tiny boots.”) Transition Ask for volunteers to share their nicknames. Ask about the nicknames of some famous celebrities. Then say something like, “Sometimes, a nickname is really appropriate. But, it still isn’t really who the person is. Let’s look back at a few short scenes from Hoovey and start thinking about how we see ourselves and others.” The Video We’ve put together three quick glimpses from Hoovey that deal with “gravitas” – the word Annie used to describe why she liked “Eric” better than “Hoovey.” Here’s the script for your reference. ANNIE
Why does everybody call you Hoovey? HOOVEY I got my arm caught in a Hoover vacuum cleaner when I was three Annie giggles. HOOVEY (CONT’D) Oh you laugh! Do you how traumatic that was? And then getting stuck with that name like that. I’m damaged goods, kid.
ANNIE
I think I like “Eric” better. It’s got gravitas. See ya around, Eric. She heads to class. HOOVEY (smiling) Gravitas. SCOOTERSlam! It was the new guy’s first day at Scooter School! ERIC That’s not how I saw it, Scooter. Annie walks past with some friends. ANNIE Hi, Eric! SCOOTER“Eric” huh?! ERIC Gravitas, Scooter. Gravitas. SCOOTERYou’re welcome. ANNIE ERIC ANNIE ERIC
Hey. Hey. Be careful. Why? I’ve got gravitas.
Transition Follow up the film clips with these discussion questions: • What does “gravitas” mean? • How did Annie’s preference for “Eric” over “Hoovey” make him feel? • Have you ever wished you could change your name? • How do we let names and nicknames affect us?
TRD << HOOVEY
Bible Study Explain that during biblical times, a person’s name was totally more significant than names are today. Back then, a name not only denoted a person’s identity, but also job, homeland, or ancestry. And, a name told you something about the person’s character and standing. A name is also used in the sense of authority. You’ve heard, “Stop, in the name of the law!” That’s why we often end our prayers with “In Jesus’ name…” Two of the people in the Bible whose names were changed because of significant life change are Simon/Peter and Saul/Paul. Mark 3:16 – These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter)… Acts 13:9 – Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said… When Jesus changed Simon’s name to Peter, He did so to give him a new identity. No longer was he to consider himself an uneducated poor fisherman. He now had a new name and a new identity: a ROCK! (That’s what Peter means.) We aren’t told why Saul changed his name to Paul. Saul was the name of Israel’s first king. Even though he was a flawed character, he was very tall, he was royalty, and he was a founding father of the nation. The name “Paul” on the other hand is a Greek word that means “small”
– and might have been a mark of humility to go from a great Hebrew kingly name to a selfeffacing Gentile name. In both cases, the name was changed to show a new identity. All of us who have accepted Jesus and follow Him faithfully will receive a new name as well. (Revelation 2:17) So, one thing to get from the name changes of famous believers (and the fact that we shall all eventually follow suit) is that we are not citizens of this world, but of the one that is to come (Philippians 3:20) where our true everlasting names are written. (Revelation 21:12; 21:7) Wrap Up Say, “Do you feel ‘stuck’ with your reputation— with your ‘name’—among the people you know? With a ‘new name’ you might be able to see yourself in a new light. A name with ‘gravitas.’ Let’s see what kinds of new names we can come up for each other.” Have the group gather in small clusters, and then go around the circle to determine a “new name” or nickname for each person. Of course, the new nicknames should be positive, and reflect an excellence that the others in the group see in each person. After enough time has gone by for everyone to get a new name, encourage the group to start using those new nicknames! Then, close in prayer. Ken McCoy

Talking With Hoovey’s Parents We had the chance to have a conversation with Jeff and Ruth Elliott about their family, their story, and this movie. They wanted us to make sure that we convey to you these important points: Faith Without Action Is Dead James 2 says it clearly. They commented, “We prayed for Eric’s healing, and he prayed for an answer. But, he didn’t just wait for an answer. He didn’t just sit around and expect God to heal him. He spent two grueling years in physical therapy. Faith without action is useless.” Bad Things Happen To Everyone Jeff said, “We cannot control whether bad things happen to us or not. They ARE going to happen. What we have control over is our attitude and being ready to handle difficulties with a positive mindset.” Ruth relayed, “I really studied the book of Job when it seemed that everything went south on us. We tried to figure out why everything was going wrong for us. Every day something new happened that took our savings account away. I realized that while everything can go wrong, everything can also go right! We needed to be of a frame of mind, a positive outlook, so that we’d be able to receive God’s blessing if it came.” Give Compassion To The Hurting They said, “When you go through situations like ours, you can feel isolated. You have difficulty relating to ‘normal’ people and their ‘normal’ problems. When someone is hurting like we were, they don’t need advice. They don’t need your wisdom about what’s going on. What they need to know is that you care, that you’re praying for them, and that you have their back.”

Movie Clip #4
The Video Roll Movie Clip #4. Here’s what the script has for this clip:
Objective By the end of this session, your students should be able to define the difference between intellectual assent and life-changing faith.
As Jeff tells this story, he pulls a straight line of tape out, and presses it to the floor. JEFF One day he decides to go big, and strings a line across Niagara Falls. Now nobody has ever attempted this before, so a huge crowd gathers. He walks right across, with a twenty knot crosswind. No problem. The next day, he puts on a blindfold. No net, no parachute, no nothing. If he slips, he’s gone. HOOVEY Let me guess. He makes it. JEFF He does. So on the third day, Irving brings a wheelbarrow. And asks the crowd, “how many of you believe I can walk across this rope pushing this wheelbarrow? And they all shout, “we believe, we believe!” Then he asks... “Okay, so who’ll get in that wheelbarrow and go with me?” He rips the tape off the roll, and stands up. JEFF Crickets. Coulda heard a pin drop. See, believing he could do it was easy. They’d seen it. But getting in the wheelbarrow, letting somebody else do the walking with no net under? That’s faith. HOOVEY (wearily) I have faith, Dad. JEFF It’s not you that has to get in that wheelbarrow. It’s me. (Powerfully) Stand up. Take your eye-patch off. You’re a point guard, not a pirate. Hoovey obeys his dad. Blinks to meet his eyes. They’re still weak, and wander easily.
Faith
Warm Up In advance: Get a blindfold, some foul smelling food item (limburger cheese, KimChee etc.) two plastic spoons and some good tasting odorless morsel. Then gather your group and ask whether your students believe you to be a trustworthy person. Most will respond affirming you to be a trustworthy person. • At this point, select a student who has indicated you are trustworthy and ask him or her to put on the blindfold and open his or her mouth when asked, because you want to give them something delicious to eat. • Have an assistant pull out the foul-smelling item, put some on the spoon, and run it by some of the kids before putting it under the nose of the blindfolded student. • On the second spoon, put the good tasting (but odorless) item, and ask him or her to open their mouth so you can drop the delicious morsel into it. Transition Say, “This was an easy gamble of faith— something that not all of you had. Listen to this actual test of faith from the movie Hoovey and consider what you would do.”

JEFF
I don’t know whether you’ll play again or not. But I’m not gonna stop you from dreaming, especially if God put that dream there to begin with. I couldn’t live with myself. For all we know, this thing’s gonna come back. We can’t control that, so we’re not gonna sit in fear of it. In fear of getting up in the morning because something bad might happen. Bad things happen. That’s life. Just because we love God we don’t get an easy road. It’s usually harder. Hoovey stares at his father like his best friend has come home at last. And nods. JEFF
We’re gonna do it just like old Irving. One step at a time. And see what happens. XT. RAILROAD TRACKS Hoovey walks with the wheelbarrow, slowly, step by step, concentrating mightily... and walks… and walks… now trots, feet perfectly on the rail. HOOVEY YESSSS!!!!! ANNIE Hold it! She runs up to Hoovey. Smiles, and climbs in. HOOVEY You sure about this? ANNIE Are you? And he pushes... first with feet on the gravel, getting the feel then he steps on the rail. HOOVEY You’re really sure...? ANNIE You mean, do I have faith? And he begins. Step by careful step. Teetering... almost falls... ANNIE Come on, Eric. You can do it! Agonizing concentration, he steps faster,
TRD << HOOVEY
and faster, and breaks into a trot-CLOSE ON: THE TRACK - a rail spike sticking up, Hoovey doesn’t see it. The wheelbarrow hits it -- Annie and wheelbarrow rear up, Hoovey SLAMS into the back of it. And they roll into a pile, and down the embankment. This doesn’t look good. Annie lies still. Hoovey has cut a gash into his leg. He rises to his knees. HOOVEY Annie... Annie! He dashes to her, rolling her over gently. And Annie... Laughs. And laughs some more. As does Hoovey now. Relieved beyond relieved. And the laughter stops. ANNIE Yes, Eric Elliott. I do have faith. JEN
What did you always say when I’d get scared? You’d always ask me the same question: what’s the first thing the Angel always says when he shows up?
JEFF JEN
Fear not. We were never afraid before. Now... we are. (shrugs) I’m just sayin’. Jeff sips his iced tea in silence, knowing his child has just reminded him the wisdom of the universe.
Transition Follow up the film clip with these discussion questions: • Okay, honestly, let’s see how many of you would have gotten into the wheelbarrow? Raise your hands if you would have taken the challenge? • Does faith believe in something or about something? What is the difference? • Since the concept of “faith” is central to Christianity, let’s see what God’s Word has to say about it. Bible Study Break your students up into groups of 4-5. Give each group at least one of these famous stories of faith. • Gideon’s Army – Judges 7:1-22 • Abraham’s Sacrifice – Genesis 22:1-18 • Peter’s Watery Walk – Matthew 14:22-33 • Joshua and Jericho – Joshua 6
Page H15
Ask them to read the story and then answer the following questions: • Why are these stories considered classic examples of faith? • A lot of people say they have faith; what is the proof that someone truly does? • Do you know of anyone who seems to be a good example of Faith in Action? If so, what makes their faith seem real? • We are not asked to walk on water or perform other examples from the stories we have heard, but what are some ways that believers your age are asked to demonstrate faith in action? Wrap Up Hand out 3x5 cards and ask your students to write down (anonymously) one area that they struggle to put their faith into action. It may be choosing the right friends, controlling their anger, dealing with disappointment, cleaning up their language, etc. Collect the cards. Tell your students that you will commit to pray for them to have the courage and strength to act in genuine faith in that one area. Rick Bundschuh

Movie Clip #5 Friends
Objective By the end of this session, your students should be challenged to be a true and better friend. Warm Up Ask your students to imagine that they’ve gotten into a terrible car accident that left them paralyzed from the neck down. Ask: • Which of your friends do you think would still hang with you? • If it were your friend paralyzed, would you stick by him or her, or drift away? • Why would it be hard to have a friend in this condition? • What would this show you about your friends? Transition In the Hoovey film, Eric discovers that he has a tumor in his skull. The effects of its removal turn him from a star athlete into a semi-invalid. He no longer can play basketball with his friends, and his life is upside down. But in these scenes he discovers who his real friends are. Watch. The Video Here’s the script for these short clips. Hoovey opens Annie’s note. As he reads... ANNIE (Voice Over) Dear Eric. Well, when I said “gravitas” I sure didn’t mean this gravitas. I always just thought of you as the kid down the road who was one grade ahead and played basketball all the time. Now I know different. You’re my friend. You’ve always made me smile, always looked out for me, always there when I needed somebody to be there.

As he reads her words, we see a MONTAGE of Hoovey’s first weeks out of the hospital, and it’s not great... Changing his eye patch from right to left. Forcing himself to walk with the cane. He seems to have no control of his left side at all. Kev and Scooter bring his homework by. Talking hoops. Hard for Hoovey to hear this. Visiting Jeff and the other FIREFIGHTERS at the station. ANNIE (V.O.) I want to be that for you now. Taking a shot or two in the barn basketball court... missing (very) wide to the either side. Jeff watching from the side. Helpless. ANNIE (V.O.) Your courage inspires me and makes me stronger. Come back soon. I miss you. Your friend, Annie. Hoovey closes the letter, and holds it to his heart. ANNIE How are you? Really? HOOVEY This kinda sucks eggs to be honest with you. ANNIE I know it does. HOOVEY It’s not all this, it’s everybody here. They pretend not to notice that I look like a freak. I can hardly walk without falling over, even with this ridiculous cane. I can’t remember any school thing after fifth grade, like, my combination... and I just had a brain tumor cut out of my head. I mean, I would notice! ANNIE They’re not as strong as you, Eric. They don’t know what to say. Her look is serene, way past her years. It instantly disarms him. He sighs. HOOVEY I don’t know about that. I guess I can’t blame ‘em. Gotta be a little... awkward? ANNIE (smiles) Not for me. I like pirates. HOOVEY Pirates. With gravitas. Arrrgh. Donovan Oakes walks by. He and Hoovey share a blank look, rivals still. Unsettling. HOOVEY Annie. I read your letter every single morning when I get up. They share a long, meaningful look. ANNIE You know, I’m not much at basketball, but I kinda got this school thing down. I can help you get caught up, if you’d like. HOOVEY Okay, but will you help me with something first? Transition Follow up the film clip with these discussion questions: • What makes a true friend? • Why can true friendship be challenging or difficult? • What do people mean when they say “He’s a fair weather friend?” Bible Study Have a white board or large piece of butcher paper posted on the wall along with pens to write with. Take the following verses and write them on individual slips of paper and put the slips in a bowl. John 15:12-13; Proverbs 11:14; 12:26, 13:20, 16:6-7, 17:17, 22:24-25, 27:6, 27:17; 1 Corinthians 15:33; Luke 6:31; Romans 12:10; Ephesians 4:29-32; Colossians 3:12-14 Say something like, “The Bible is not silent on what being a friend means. I will pass around a bowl that has a teaching from Scripture on friendship. Please take one slip, read it, and then go to the board and write a sentence in your own words that sums up God’s teaching on friendship from that verse.” After students have written on the board ask them to give examples from school life that might show how these ideas work out in action. Wrap Up Hand out blank paper. Ask your students to write the initials of one of their friends on the paper and then, by studying the responses on the white board, choose at least one response that they need to display more in that friendship. Ask them to write a prayer to God that asks for His help in making them into the kind of friend that shows that attribute to the friend whose initials are on their paper. Rick Bundschuh

raised to life so that sin and death would forever be defeated. He came into the world so that He could save the world. By living a sinless life, even though He was tempted just like us, Jesus was the perfect sacrifice for our sin. Jesus died on the Cross and took the sin punishment we deserve so that we can be saved.
Wrap Up
Theme
Jesus’ Sacrifice
Objective
Students will learn that the perfect sacrifice of Jesus frees them from the guilt, shame, and scars of sin.
Warm Up
Awkward – Have the students take a minute or two to remember the most embarrassing moment that they have ever had. Ask them to write it out, as briefly as possible, in the Awkward section of their Student Guide. Once everyone has finished writing, ask for volunteers to share their most embarrassing moments.
Transition
Ask the students a couple of questions:
• Was sharing such an embarrassing moment with your friends difficult? Why or why not? • Was sharing your moment easier once someone else had already shared his or hers?
The Video
Encourage the students to write down some of the lyrics that they hear in the video. Once the group finishes listening to the song, have them share some of the lyrics that they noted.
Transition
Ask, “How do you think some of these lyrics match up with this story that we watched playing out in the video?” Explain that the video shows a girl trapped in a prison with no way out. This is meant to depict someone who is trapped by the guilt and shame of their sin. Yet, as the fire sweeps through the prison, the girl is set free. We are going to look at how Jesus has set us free from our sin and shame. Jesus knows exactly what temptation is all about, but He has conquered temptation and sin itself.
Bible Study
Have the students turn in their Bibles to Hebrews 4:14-16. Ask for a volunteer to read this section of Scripture aloud to the group. Point out that they actually heard this Scripture quoted a couple of times in the video.
Jesus takes away the sin of the world – Many of us have heard or read John 3:16-17. Jesus became a man, lived a sinless life, died on a cross, and was © 2014 INTERLINC • INTERLINC-ONLINE.COM • 800.725.3300
Jesus understands your struggles – Jesus was tempted just as we are. He is able to sympathize with the temptation, frustration, and trials that we face. Please don’t think that God doesn’t understand what you’re going through. He knows. He has experienced it and wants to be there for us. Just like Matthew 11:28-30 says, Jesus is gentle in dealing with our pain. He wants to carry that pain, shame and guilt. Trust Jesus in everything – We can trust Jesus with absolutely everything in our lives. By trusting Him as the perfect sacrifice for our sin and as the Lord of our life, the Bible says that we are “adopted as sons.” (Romans 8:15) Jesus loves you in the most perfect way possible. Even with all your emotional scars, failures, and sins, Jesus still loves you. Be confident in Him, even when life is hard and you mess up and sin. Trust Jesus and He will give you grace and mercy when you need it the most.
KING KULTURE WILSON, NORTH CAROLINA DANIEL.RITCHIE@KINGKULTURE.COM
Maybe there is a student in the room who hasn’t trusted Jesus as the Lord of their life. Give an opportunity for students to decide to trust Jesus as Lord.
For the rest of the group, remind them that Jesus understands their hurt. Encourage them to trust Jesus when they are struggling and He will be there for them in their time of need. Close out this time with a prayer that God would give the students the confidence to trust Jesus with everything.

Discipleship, Cost Of
Objective
This study will show your students that while following Christ can be costly, giving everything for Him is well worth it.
Warm Up
Stomp & Pop – Tie 18-inch sections of string to balloons that have been blown up with just air. Have each of your students tie the string around their ankle. Now that they are dragging a balloon behind their foot, lay out the simple game rules: the object is to stomp on other student’s balloons with your foot, but keep your balloon intact. The last person with a balloon is the winner.
Transition
Once you get your hearing back, have the students clean up the mess. Then, ask, “Did it freak you out to have to risk getting your balloon popped just to try to pop someone’s balloon?” Explain that sometimes in our faith we have to take a risk to do something that matters. Today, we will talk about being willing to do whatever it takes for the Gospel.
The Video
Hand out the Student Guides and have the students write down the lyrics that stand out as they watch the video. As the video wraps up ask students these two questions:
• Do you think you would have done everything that the dad did in the video? • Honestly, would you have tried to save the robber? Why or why not?
Transition
Say, “You just saw a video where a dad did whatever it took to save his son. Yet, this same dad also saved the life of the man who kidnapped his son. He put his own life on the line to save others. That’s the point of this song. Even the name of this song –‘Kamikaze’–is a word that was made famous during World War II by Japanese pilots who crashed their planes into ships while they were still in the plane. Those pilots were willing to risk it all.”

Bible Study
Ask your students, “Have you ever had to give up or lose something because of your faith in Christ?” Explain that having faith in Christ sometimes means we have to give up something or deal with hard circumstances. But, Scripture reminds us that losing something because of our faith is well worth it.
KING KULTURE WILSON, NORTH CAROLINA DANIEL.RITCHIE@KINGKULTURE.COM
Faith Is Worth The Cost – Just like verses 7 and 8 say, the value of everything else pales in comparison with how amazing Jesus is. Jesus is our salvation, righteousness, hope, joy, peace, and strength. He is worth the cost. • Do you have a story to share about God comforting you in a hard time?
Read Philippians 3:7-11 to your students and as you go through the lesson, encourage students to take notes in their Student Guide.
• Psalm 73:25-26 tells us that our heart and flesh will fail, but God is there to give us strength. We might have to lose everything because of our faith, but God is worth it!
Faith Is Costly –Verse 11 is a reminder that we will share in the sufferings of Jesus. We will have people say grumpy things to us because of Jesus. We might lose sleep so we can get up early in the morning to read Scripture or to spend time in prayer. We might even lose relationships because of our relationship with Jesus.
Wrap Up
• Have you had a relationship change because of your faith? • As Romans 12:1 explains, sometimes living out our faith results in sacrifice. We might have to give up something very important because of what we believe.
We need to be willing to sacrifice in order to follow Jesus. Write down five things that you can risk or sacrifice for the sake of your faith. It can be something as simple as giving up sleep to wake up early and study the Bible, or giving up time after school so you can be a part of FCA. Maybe it means risking what someone thinks of you in order for you to share the gospel with him or her. Write those down in your Student Guides. Close in prayer.

Objective
Students will be reminded of the difficult challenge of being a daily follower of Jesus Christ.
Warm Up
The Hardest… – The leader calls out a category, then students share what they deem to be the most difficult for each category. As students respond, take time to get an explanation for each response. Here are the categories: School Subject / Food To Eat / Position In A Sport / Household Chore / Career / Personal Item To Be Without
Transition
Say, “Just like the old saying goes, ‘life is hard.’ What does following Jesus mean to you?” Allow for discussion before digging deeper by asking, “Is following Jesus hard?” Allow for responses. Share a personal experience in which you had difficulty following Jesus.
The Song
Hand out the Student Guides and pens. Then say, “Colton Dixon has a brand new song called ‘More of You’. Let’s listen to it, and then we’ll discuss what you think the song means.” Encourage students to use the blank space on the Student Guide to jot down any lyrics that help formulate the meaning of the song. Then, play the song.
Transition
Discuss, “What do you think the song is about?”
Bible Study
Say, “Following Jesus daily is far from easy but very much worth the effort. Let’s use the Cost of Discipleship section of your Student Guide to explore three challenging Bible verses about following Jesus daily.” Either split your group into three teams, assigning each team one of the verses, or work through all three verses together as one group. If you split up, allow each group to share their verse and their findings. Either way, facilitate depth. Get students out of the shallow water and into the deep!

Bible Study
Theme Deceit
Objective
Students will discuss the cliché-type struggle of wealth vs. happiness and the lies that people spread in order to appear more desirable in society.
Warm Up
Agent 007 – Explain to students that there is a secret agent among them who will receive their orders from you through a secret handshake. Have students spread out across the room and let them know that in order for the game to work, they have to be honest about their role as either a civilian or an agent. Let them know that when the music starts, everyone will find someone to shake hands with and introduce themselves as a fake spy/secret-agent character (not 007). If someone winks while shaking hands, that is the signal that 007 (the one who winked) just used a sleep serum on the person winked at. Therefore, once 007 walks away, the student who was winked at will shake someone else’s hand (to give some time after they were put to sleep so it is not so obvious who they just shook hands with), and then the student who was winked at will calmly lie down on the ground, as the agent (007) has had time to move on to his next “victim.” Continue until someone identifies the agent.
Transition
Was identifying Agent 007 hard? Was it easier to recognize Agent 007 as the number of people awake decreased? How did you try to figure out who was Agent 007? Tell the students that there is a lot of deception in our world, and we often don’t recognize the lies until it’s too late. Say something like, “Lecrae uses his song ‘Nuthin’ to point out the lies that people spread in order to appear more desirable, successful, and put-together than they really are.
The Song
Hand out the Student Guides. Play the song and have students fill out the Lingering Lyrics section on their handouts as they listen.
Transition
Discuss some of the lyrics that stood out to the students. Discuss some of the things that students have seen elsewhere, such as in the media, movies, and music, where people don’t really paint the full picture of their lives.
© 2014 INTERLINC • INTERLINC-ONLINE.COM • 800.725.3300
Let students know that deceiving people by painting a pretty picture, then allowing the lie to destroy the person, is nothing new.
Genesis 3:1-13 – Discuss the importance of this passage. Say something like, “The serpent deceived Eve by implying that God was lying to her. It was at the moment that she ate from the fruit that truth, as known to man, was shattered. If you’ve grown up in church, you know the story—but take a look at these questions and think deeper about it.” Go over their answers to the questions under the Lies section of their Student Guide. Possible responses are in parenthesis. • Why do you think the serpent didn’t try to deceive both Adam and Eve at the same time? • What do you think was the deciding factor in Eve eating the fruit? • Why do you think Eve was seemingly easily swayed into eating the fruit? Or was she? • Lecrae’s song talks about the things certain rappers DON’T mention. What are some similarities between what he was saying and how the serpent acted? Jude 1:16 – Part of Lecrae’s song describes the cliché of writing about things like wealth, brands, and success, but ultimately not being happy;

that it’s the same old thing, “goin’ round in circles.” He clearly shows that such thinking is more of a façade than reality. • What does being a “faultfinder” mean to you? • What are some professions where people are likely to deceive others for their own advantage? • Can you think of an example of someone in the public eye who really didn’t have it all as together as they portrayed? • Where does true happiness come from? Ephesians 4:25 – The Bible tells us to “put off falsehoods.” This means that we must speak in truth just as Christ speaks in truth. WHO we represent is more important than trying to impress others through deceit. • What does this verse mean to you? • List some ways to help people and yourself to stay honest.
Wrap Up
Remind students that there are many people like the ones described in Jude 1:16. Deception has become part of our culture and society. We tend to feed off lies rather than truth. Have students fill out the Honest Request part of their handout. Conclude with prayer that asks God to strengthen each heart in truth and to help them discern what is deception and what is truth.

• Where are the guys going? Why? • What is the girl with the camera looking for? Does she find it? Listen for… • The source of the fire. • To whom are they referring to when they say, “We’ve got a fireblazin’ in our hearts”? • What does the fire compel us to do? • What does the fire of God consume? (Sin) • What does that imply about His fire living in our hearts? (His presence cleanses us) Jeremiah 20:9 • What was the result when Jeremiah tried to keep silent? (He couldn’t hold it in) • Have you ever felt that way about anything? 1 Corinthians 9:16 • Why did Paul say he couldn’t take credit for sharing [preaching] the gospel? (He was compelled, and responsible) • Do we have a responsibility to share the gospel? • Are YOU compelled to share it?
DALLAS, TEXAS DAVEFELTS@YMAIL.COM

Transition
Say, “There’s nothing wrong with feeling overwhelmed or incapable at times. I think we all go through that from time to time. But is it good for us to stay with those feelings of insecurity? How can we overcome those feelings when our situation is still difficult?”

Ask for a few volunteers to share a personal example of feeling overwhelmed. Something that maybe they had to do but did not feel capable of doing it. Be prepared to share your own story to break the ice and get students talking. Share that we all feel overwhelmed at times. There’s nothing wrong with feeling insecure.

• Did you feel lonely during that time? • Why do you think you went through that? • Any of you ever had someone say false things about you?
Ask students what they thought about the video. Were there any words or phrases that they thought were interesting? Ask them why they thought it was interesting? Discuss these questions:
• How can we be a witness in our pain? • What does the phrase “pressing me and testing me” imply? • When do you feel like you have been tested? • Did you catch the message about encouragement?

• Why would God choose the “weak things of the world” to shame the strong?
nothing to do with how awesome we are—it has everything to do with God’s grace. (Ephesian 2:8-9) We don’t have to freak out when we’re not “good enough” because Jesus does what we never could – He saves us. We can depend on that!
Theme
Confidence; In Christ
Objective
Students will learn that lasting confidence only comes thru knowing Christ. Because of that, He deserves our praises and longs for us to tell others about Him.
Warm Up
List It Out – Have students list five things that they are really good at. Then have the students list five characteristics/actions of God that they are thankful for. After the students have made their lists, have them take a few minutes to share what they wrote.
Play the video and encourage the students to write down any lyrics that stand out to them.
Explain that Trip Lee isn’t talking about going around all day bragging to everybody about everything. He’s encouraging us to do the exact opposite. He wants us to only brag about who God is and what He has done. Bragging about God may seem a little bit weird. It goes against that whole “God opposes the proud” thing, right? Yet that is exactly what God wants for us to do. He wants us to tell the world about how amazing He is.
Transition
After hearing the students share their lists, discuss these questions:
• Was it easier to make the list about you or the list about God? • What are some ways that we can talk about God a little more?
Ask the students to look at 1 Corinthians 1:26-31. Talk through these questions with the students:
• In what ways do you think you can boast about God to your friends? As you talk through this Bible Study, encourage students to take notes in the Bible Study section of their Student Guide. Feel free to adapt this outline in teaching this lesson: God Has Your Back – God’s Word reminds us there are plenty of times when things go wrong: we fail, we sin, we’re scared, we’re not smart enough. God knows we are going to struggle during hard times. Not only does He know that we will have hard times, He’s there to help us in them. That’s why God reminds us in 2 Corinthians 12:9 that “God’s strength is perfected in weakness.” Even when you’re weak, everything’s okay because God has your back. Depend On Christ – Our hope and salvation have everything to do with what Jesus has done. His perfect life became our righteousness. (2 Corinthians 5:21) His death bought our eternal life. Our eternal hope has

Boast About God – God gives us strength. God saves us. God makes us righteous. With all of these amazing things that He has done for us, shouldn’t we tell other people about how amazing He is? YES!!! Before we boast about how awesome we are, we should boast about how awesome God is! (Jeremiah 9:23-24) Don’t be afraid to talk about God – He is deserves it.
Wrap Up
God wants us to be confident in Him and to take every chance we get to boast about how awesome He is. Challenge the group to think about three different ways to boast about God this week. Encourage the students to worship God in the good times and even the bad times, because He is still powerful in their lives.
Theme God’s Power
Objective
This Bible study will seek to show students the remarkable power of God. He isn’t just a loving, hug-it-out kind of God. He is a “Mighty Warrior” who can overcome our troubles. Knowing that, your students will be able to worship God in the good and bad times.
Warm Up
God Is… Have the students write down ten words that they think describe who God is. Have them write their words down in the God Is… section in their Student Guide. Take a couple of minutes and have the students share their words.
Transition
Explain that reminding ourselves of whom God is helps us to worship Him. Sometimes, we can focus on certain aspects of who God is (love, peace, joy) so much that we forget He is powerful and can lead us through hard times.
The Video
Have the students watch the music video and write under the Mighty Warrior section some of the words/ phrases that stand out in the song.
Transition Discuss:
• Do you typically think of God as a “warrior”? Why or why not? • How can God be both a warrior and loving?
© 2014 INTERLINC • INTERLINC-ONLINE.COM • 800.725.3300
Remind the students that God can be a strong warrior and loving simultaneously. Sometimes, God shows His love for us in incredibly strong ways. Explain that Exodus 15:1-18 is a worship song that Moses had written. Read the passage and then discuss:
• What does v.2 mean when it says that God is “our strength and our song”? • What words in this passage show God’s power? • How does God show us His love in this passage? • How does Moses show his love for God in this Bible song?
KING KULTURE WILSON, NORTH CAROLINA DANIEL.RITCHIE@KINGKULTURE.COM
Explain that God wants us to see how powerful He is. As we see God’s power over everything, we can more easily and readily trust Him. Even in the worst times, God is still working and loving us.

Theme Celebration
Objective
Students will see that even in the midst of a world that is full of trials and suffering, the saving grace of Jesus is always a cause for celebration.
Warm Up
Positive Spin – Place your students in a circle so that they have to look at each other. Start a discussion with them about anything that pertains to them. Make the stipulation that they can say whatever they want about the subject, but it must be said in a positive manner. For example: they may have had a test, but they can’t complain about it; they must say something like, “We had a test and I am glad that my teacher cares about my education enough to test us.” They must say everything in a positive manner, they can’t just state fact—they must find the positive in everything.
Transition
Ask, “How hard was staying positive about your day?” Lead the discussion to the fact that we live in a world that seems to only be happy when they are miserable. Guide them to talk about how celebrating things in life
The Video
Introduce We Are Leo if your group hasn’t heard of them before. Explain that the lyrics in this song reflect a heart of gratitude and worship as the band celebrates all that Christ has done for them. Have the students watch the video and write in the It’s A Celebration section things in their life that are cause for celebration, no matter how small or insignificant.
Transition
Share some of the celebrations they wrote, and make a big deal over them. Don’t let any celebration seem insignificant. This may be the only celebration some of your students get.

Philippians 4:4-9 – God spends a lot of time celebrating us. He celebrates when we come to Him. He celebrates when we return to Him. He celebrates as we try to fulfill His calling for us, and He celebrates when we get up from being knocked down. This passage urges us to rejoice and celebrate in all things because God is with us.
• Do you believe that YOU are worth celebrating?
• Why do you think the passage tells us not to worry?
Luke 15:11-24 – Just as God celebrates with each new salvation and decision to follow Him, He celebrates the return of His children when they have wondered away. God thinks we are a big deal and misses us when we turn away. In fact He misses us so badly, He celebrates EACH TIME we return to His love and care. This kind of celebration can be seen in this passage about the prodigal son.

Salvation; Regeneration
Objective
Students will learn how God makes all things new and will respond to “so great a salvation.”
Warm Up
Reinvented – Gather a collection of everyday objects and place them on a table. Have your students (individually or in small groups) select one of the objects. When the selections are complete, give your students a limited time to come up with a new and different use for their object. Award a prize for the most creative reinvention of their object.
An alternative would be to give each student a paperclip and have them create a list of as many uses as they can come up with for it. Award prizes for the most ideas and the most creative idea as voted on by your students. (Perhaps, a box of paper clips?)
Transition
Ask your students if they have ever felt as though they they had to reinvent themselves. What (or who) caused them to think that way? Did they make a change? Was it positive or negative? Then turn the corner with this question: “What would other people change about you if they could?” The answers can be transformative if it forces students to look at the way we represent God and ourselves to the rest of the world. Then ask, “What do you think God wants to change about you?”
The Song
Hand out the Student Guides. Explain that Lincoln Brewster’s new album Oxygen contains a song called “Made New” where he sings about all the things that God has done in his life to make him new. As your students listen to the song, ask them to write down as many of those things as they can.
Transition
Explain that God loves us completely, and that love can and should transform us. He wants us to be what He created us to be. Salvation is more that just a way to overcome sin, it’s a rebirth and a new life. He wants to make us new, just as He makes all things new.

Bible Study
In our lesson we are going to look at God’s transformative work in our lives.
• Romans 12:2 shows that we are transformed when we renew our minds, i.e. when we adapt our thinking to God’s way of thinking. • 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 explains that salvation in Christ makes us new creations, the old things pass away and the new has come. The purpose of becoming new creations is so that our reconciliation to God through Christ becomes our message and ministry. We are recreated to become His ambassadors calling others to become new creations. • Romans 8:9-21 teaches that when we receive Christ, we receive the Holy Spirit and eternal life. The Spirit living in us gives us an obligation to live according to the Spirit, which turns us from God’s enemies to His children and heirs, overcomes fear, and helps us overcome trials. Creation waits for this Spirit to be revealed in us because creation will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.

Theme Addiction
Objective
Students will be challenged to consider addictions as the things that seek to control them and suck life out of them. They will be encouraged to consider how acts of love can replace the darkness of addiction.
Warm Up
In Save Me From Myself, author Brian Welch describes his practice of taking pictures of things that had the potential to have power over him. After giving up drugs, he found a forgotten stash and before flushing it down the toilet, he took a picture as a reminder that those drugs no longer had any power over him. Use this imagery of flushing down the toilet the things that seek to rob, steal, and destroy the abundant life that we all want the students we serve to embrace. You can do this by challenging them to take a mental picture of whatever “addictions” they would like to see going down a toilet. Or, they could do short writing assignments related to this exercise or a drawing assignment of the same that they could either keep to themselves or share in small groups.
Manafest exclaims, ’Cause I know, diamonds aren’t the only thing that shine / And I know, love can make the darkness sing. Things that turn into addictions in our lives allure us into thinking that allegiance to them will give us a “shine.” Addictions are full of empty promises and filthy lies.

Bible Study
Addictions of all sorts are incredibly complex issues. Paul’s experience described in Romans 7:15, 19 captures some of this complexity with vivid clarity. Paul, of course, is referring here to an addiction to sin. He is disorientated by the disconnect between his knowledge of what he should do and the reality of his actual behavior. While there are elements of sin in all addictions, there are also elements of mental illness involved in many addictions, so it is not

The goal is to get the group to give you as many one-word ideas that pop up when given the topic word. Write each idea on a board as students share.
Transition
Explain that one of the major hurtles in life is to figure out who we truly are. With so many messages being thrown out at us and about us, we have decisions to make every day whether we want to believe these messages or not, based on what we already know about ourselves to be true.
The Song
Share with your students that a new song from singer V. Rose entitled “Am I Trending?” has actually been getting some radio play on secular stations as well as Christian stations. As you listen to the song, try to pick out some of the lyrics that hit on the topic of “identity.”

Confusion comes when other things in the world also want attention and commitment. That is why we need to understand when the Bible speaks of being “in Christ” it is encouraging us to examine our own lives and ask ourselves, “Do I identify with this?” “In Christ,” “In Him,” or “in the Lord” is mentioned 160 times in the Bible—this would make it pretty important when we are thinking about what being a follower of Jesus means. Have students (or small groups) look up these verses and determine what each is saying about our identity in Christ. • Romans 8:39 (We can never be separated from God.) • 2 Corinthians 5:17 (We are a new creation.) • Ephesians 1:11 (We are chosen.) • Ephesians 1:7 (We are forgiven.) • Ephesians 3:12 (We can approach God with freedom and confidence.) • Colossians 1:2 (We are holy and faithful.) • Colossians 1:27 (We have hope of glory.) • 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (We can give thanks in all circumstances.)

Explain that our world is probably the most challenging ever to live in a way that puts Jesus in front of all we do. So many things want our attention, our resources, and even our life. But, none of these offer any eternal reward, and none of them allow us a real relationship in a way that will change our life for the better. Jesus, and only Jesus, does.
Wrap Up
Challenge your group to consider this message through the next week as they go through their life and these other areas continue to want more from them. Encourage them to look through their Bibles, use the Concordance, and to look on the internet for other verses about being “in Christ.” Have them send those to you via whatever e-connection you may have with them. (Maybe make it a contest to see who can find the most verses in the next week.) In closing, have students pray silently as you post the areas on the screen from the Warm Up activity. Encourage them to pray through each area—that it would not be something that pulls them away from God, but draws them closer to Him.

to be means nothing in the light of what Jesus did for us on the cross. We have been saved from ourselves! Read Ephesians 2:8.
Read Romans 5:1-2. Tell your students that no matter what we have done or who others have said we are, God sees us as His perfect child. As long as we believe in the work that Jesus did for us on the cross and daily live for Him, we are righteous. We are not righteous because of anything we have done or can do, but because of the perfect gift of grace.

Grace
Students will learn that their identity is sealed by what Jesus did on the cross, despite their circumstance or sinful nature.
Celebrity Identity –On small strips of paper write the names of recognizable celebrities. Place these in a bowl or hat. Have students come up, one at a time, and try to get the rest of the group to guess each celebrity without saying the celebrity’s name. Give each student one minute to go through as many as he or she can.
Transition
Explain to your students that they could guess who these celebrities were because of their established identities. Without even knowing their name, they could figure out who they were because of the way they are perceived. Share that the definition of identity is “the fact of being who or what a person is.” Tell the students that you will now watch a music video that talks about identity and specifically, our identity as children of God.
Play MercyMe’s “Greater” lyric video.
Tell your students that you are now going to examine what the grace of God says about identity; about who or what we really are.
Pass out the Student Guides and ask each student to explain who they are in only five words. Ask a few students to share out loud what they wrote. Chances are that they will share some eye-opening revelations about the way they see themselves. Explain that the way we see ourselves is informed by numerous variables including self-worth, things others have said about us, our own thoughts and fears, and others. When we accept Jesus into our hearts and begin to serve Him, He changes who we are. Read 2 Corinthians 5:17.
Explain that often we don’t really think about what being “saved” means. What did God save us from? Certainly from an eternity spent in hell. But also, from our old selves! The things that we don’t like about ourselves or the countless times we have messed up and fallen short of who we are called
© 2014 INTERLINC • INTERLINC-ONLINE.COM • 800.725.3300
Tell your students that if they wrote anything negative about themselves when they described themselves in five words, then you have incredible news. That is not the way God sees them! Because of the gift of Jesus giving up His life for us on Calvary, He now sees us as “God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10) Explain that grasping this concept is often difficult. After all, we always know more about ourselves than others do. We know what we thought when we saw our friend get an upgraded phone before we did. We know how we felt when that person in school insulted us in front of friends. We vividly remember that time we cheated just a little on that test. But the incredible thing about grace is that it is, in fact, undeserved. By definition, it is “the free and unmerited favor of God.” Not only did we not do anything to deserve it, we can’t do anything to make it go away. It is always there because of Jesus and that is the most humbling, awe-inspiring part of our new identity.
INTERLÍNC FRANKLIN, TENNESSEE BPALMA@INTERLINC-ONLINE.COM
Wrap Up
Have your students rewrite five words to describe themselves, but instruct them to do so through the lens of grace. Tell them to try to see themselves the way their perfect and loving Father sees them. Those five new words are who they truly are. Tell your students to hang this up in their room somewhere and look at it daily as a reminder of their true identity. Explain that no matter what others might say or even what we think of ourselves, this is who we really are and we just need to remind ourselves of it until we truly believe it. Close in prayer.

Tell students that occupations and jobs are something to think about. What are some things you want to do/be when you get older? (Have students respond). Let students know that Rachael Messini’s new video “Dreams” incorporates Christ’s relentless love, our own self-doubt, and the desire to pursue that which we truly dream.
The Video
What’s my Occupation? – For this game, you will need four volunteers. Have them sit in chairs facing the Play the video. group. On four note cards, write four different occupations—they can be silly or serious (I prefer both). For instance, one can say “Firefighter” and Take a few minutes to have the stuanother can say “Flavor Critic for Ben dents answer the questions from their and Jerry’s Ice Cream.” When the four “First Thoughts” section. students get their cards, you will ask them questions. The rules are that they cannot say any part of their occupation, but can only give clever clues as to what their occupation is. For instance, one question you may ask is, “What do you think life is all about?” The firefighter may say, “It’s about not getting burned by the people around you.” The flavor critic may say, “Life is all about taste. Some people prefer one thing, while others, another.” The group must raise their hand and guess the person’s occupation. If they guess correctly, give them a candy bar. (You can also give out new occupation cards to keep the game going.)

• What do these verses mean to you?
Rachael Messini talks about what the listener would do if you couldn’t fail. Keep the verses above in mind as you answer the following:
• What benefits are there to doing things in the Lord’s name?
• If money and time wasn’t an issue, and you know you would succeed, what would you want to do/be? • Why are these verses important to remember as a Christ-Follower? • Write down a time when doubt swept over you and kept you from going after something you want to do. Although some students may have heard these verses many times, they need to really understand the heaviness of those words: that ALL things can be accomplished with Christ. Many of us want to do things that at times may seem impossible and unattainable; the reality, however, is that when Christ is at the center of what we do, we can accomplish great things in His name.
• Why do you think it’s sometimes hard for us to seek the Kingdom of God first?
Wrap Up

Don’t let doubt and all the ‘haters’ keep you from pursuing your dreams. Objective
Students will learn about being a new creation, and what being justified in Christ means.
Warm Up
Old Clothes / New Clothes – Divide into two teams, and each team into two groups. Have two suitcases or boxes for each team. Each box should have a large shirt, shorts, shoes, and hat. In the first box (Box A), at the starting line (where group A’s are lined up), have old, dirty clothes. At the second set of boxes (Box B), across the room, (where Group B’s are lined up) have new, clean clothes. In turn, each player must put on old clothes and run to the other box, where they take the old clothes off and put on a set of new clothes. They must then run back to where they started and take the new clothes off. When each person of a team gets the new clothes off, the next team member with the old clothes may start. The process repeats until one team finishes and wins.

Difficulties; Trials
Objective
Life is not fair. It is not a matter of “if” but “when” we will experience the pain and suffering accompanying sickness, separation, or death. In this lesson, your group will discover the strength and hope found through living for God.
Warm Up
Direct your group to the My Life So Far section of the Student Guide. Read through the directions with your group, and give the students about ten minutes to complete the exercise.
Reflection
Give each person a few moments to share his or her life graph. Follow with these questions:
• Did you learn anything new about yourself in this exercise? If so, what? • What new thing did you learn about somebody else? • How can it help to recognize that life does have ups and downs?
Say something like, “Life is not fair. We will inevitably experience trying, painful moments where sickness, separation, or even death of a loved one brings us to our knees. In our time together we will discover the strength and hope we find in living for God.”
Have your youth turn to the He Said/ She Said section of the Student Guide. You can introduce the video by letting them know this song was written out of the real experience of the singer who fought a potentially terminal illness. Show the video as your group works through the exercise. When the video has concluded have your group present their different observations and the comments they made about the video
Transition
Say, “The writer of this song reminds us that these situations bring us back to our knees. We have a deep understanding that God created us, and ultimately our life is in His hands. Whether we live or die we are in His care. While we live, how do we find strength and hope in God? Let’s turn to the Bible and see what it says.”
© 2014 INTERLINC • INTERLINC-ONLINE.COM • 800.725.3300
Direct your group to pair up and turn to the Hope Defined section of the Student Guide. Give each pair about five minutes to complete the assignment. Have your youth share their titles and give explanations if needed. Follow with these questions:
• What is significant about God’s unfailing love? • How is the “fear of the Lord” different from being afraid of Him? • What did you learn about relying on your own strength? • Verse 20 might be considered the key verse in this chapter. When we put our hope in the Lord, what does He promise? • What do those two mean for our daily life?
FREE METHODIST CHURCH SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA DRANCK@FMCSB.ORG
Say something like, “We don’t know what is coming our way. We can never fully prepare for the twists and turns of life, or for the hard times we might face. All we can do is ‘practice’ putting our hope in the Lord and in Him alone. As we practice this in the good times, it will be something we more naturally do in the hard times. The writer of the song encourages us to ‘hold fast.’” Ask your group, if they feel comfortable, to share where they recently experienced pain/suffering or where they are presently. Stop and pray for them or have somebody in the group pray for them. At the end of the prayer, have the group repeat these words together: “We put our hope in You, Lord. You are our help and shield.”

THE FREE RUN OF FAITH
Theme Growth
Objective
Brand new Christians will be encouraged to take their next steps of faith.
Warm Up
Free Running – This race can be run as a team relay, or just as individuals. Designate a start/finish spot, and a point that must be run to and touched before returning to the start/finish spot. That midpoint should have several obstacles that have to be negotiated over/under/around before reaching it. (When I did this, I chose a crib in the church’s nursery—which was down two flights of stairs and at the end of a hall in another building.) Have a leader placed at that midpoint to guarantee each runner touches the midpoint before running back. If you’re running this as a relay race, the first team finished wins. If you’re having individuals race, time each runner to determine who was faster. (I now wish I had positioned three or so people along the course with iPhones to take videos of the kids as they ran—I could have made a cool video of the race!)

John quotes two verses from the Bible as he explains about the importance of growing as a Christian: • Acts 17:28 – In Him we live and move and have our being. • John 15:4-5 – (Jesus speaking) “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” Use this outline to reinforce what John talked about: • What You Feel Isn’t What’s Most Real – God has transformed you from death to life. This isn’t just a cool club that you’ve joined, but you’ve been reborn into a family, and an army—so that you can fight for the life you want to live. While you might feel discouraged, or bewildered, or frustrated, God is right there in you to help you continue to live in and for Him. • Follow In His Footsteps – Freerunners jump and flip and sprint their way over and under any obstacle they encounter, and they do it with style. Being a Christian is like that— running creatively in normal places, dealing with the obstacles (problems,

opposition, misunderstanding, and so on) as they come. • You Need A Strong Foundation – Prayer and the Bible are two keys to laying your strong foundation. God’s Provision
Objective
Students will recognize that the Lord is their greatest need, and they will also learn that they can be used by God to fulfill others’ needs.
Warm Up
Needs – Students form teams of five. Give a list of items (such as water, hatchet, fire-starter, flare gun, first aid kit, knife, deodorant, rope, spear, tarp, canned food, generator, etc.) and ask the teams to choose three different items that would give them the best chance of survival in the rainforest. Give them a few minutes to discuss. Call on groups to discuss why they chose what they did. Then, ask them whether what they’d choose would be different if they were stranded in the desert—if so, what items would they change? Go over other scenarios such as: stranded in a rowboat; on a deserted island; lost in the arctic, etc.
Our needs oftentimes depend on our circumstances; if we have fresh water access, we wouldn’t need to choose it as one of our needs in that certain scenario. It is still a need, but we don’t really “need” to worry about access to it. However, regardless of any situation, our greatest need is Christ.
The Video
Explain to students that Lecrae’s “All I Need Is You” is a song that puts into perspective that all we really need in this life is Christ. Sometimes we get off track, but that’s one of the many reasons why we need Jesus. Play video.

Bible Study
Have students read 1 Samuel 17:1-11, 32-51 and fill out the All I Need section on their handouts, and discuss the questions as well as their answers.
• Why was David so confident that he could take on Goliath? • David refused to use what the average soldier “needs”—sword, armor, and spear. What was his greatest weapon? (His confidence and faith in God.) Explain that the Lord always meets our needs and that no matter what we go through, He will never leave us. Discuss some of the basic needs that humans need—water, shelter, clothing, food—and then explain that no matter what the environment is around the world, God has made a way for humans to live there with these basic needs. In the desert, some cacti are edible and contain vital nutrients and fluids. Some trees/bushes can grow very large and can provide shelter capabilities, etc. In the mountains, animals can be hunted, and provide clothing options, and the snow can be packed in such a way to offer housing (look at the Eskimos).

Read Luke 12:24 and Matthew 4:4. Discuss: • The first verse talks about physical needs; what does the second verse talk about? • What is the difference between needs and wants? • Can God use you to fulfill someone’s needs? How?
Wrap Up
God will always provide for our needs. Having the Lord on our side is our biggest weapon. Just as David had faith entering his battle, we too must have faith that God will supply our needs. What’s important to point out is the role we can play in fulfilling others’ needs. When you see someone in need of a coat, and you have five at home, you could be the blessing for that person who had been praying for one. Our Creator loves us, and that love drives the fulfillment of our needs. Have students fill out the Request section on their student handout, and then close in prayer.

All I Need
1 Samuel 17:1-11, 32-51 Why was David so confident that he could take on Goliath?
Request
List three ways you can help others in need. Pray that God will show you someone with a need that you can help fulfill through Him.
David refused to use what the average soldier “needs.” What was his greatest weapon?
Luke 12:24; Matthew 4:4 The first verse talks about physical needs; what does the second verse talk about?

MESSENGERS - LYRIC VIDEO
JEFF WILLIAMSON
Theme
Transition
Evangelism; Witnessing
Objective
Ask the students to focus on the calling that is placed on their life as a messenger of Christ.
Bible Study
1 John 2:18-19 –Have you left the church to follow others, or are you a messenger for Christ?
Students will be reminded to be a witness for Christ in all that they do and in all circumstances.
The Video
• “It is the last hour.” This is the only time this phrase occurs in the New Testament. How important is it to be a messenger in this “last hour”?
Warm Up
Transition
• The fact that the antichrists have come proves that the last hour had begun. Some people in the church followed the antichrists, leaving the church. Have you left God to follow those who are not of Him? Do those who are labeled “antichrist” have a stronger hold on this world than those of us who are believers?
As the students arrive, have these questions printed or looping on a video screen. Encourage the students to answer them individually or in groups.
Show the video.
Ask, “What is a messenger called upon to do?”
• What is a witness? • Can a person always be a witness in all circumstances? • How difficult is being a witness amid so many false ideas and religious opinions?
1 John 2:20-23 –You have been anointed by the Spirit to be a messenger. You have been given the truth to embrace and to share. • Being a messenger means that you need to be willing to share your story. What is the beginning of your story? How did Christ change your life? • How will you share your story when you encounter the “nonbeliever”? When you encounter a false teacher, will you be able to defend the Lord of your life?
UNION AVENUE BAPTIST CHURCH MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE WILLIAMSON@UNIONAVENUE.ORG
1 John 2:24-26 –John teaches us how to cope with false teachings. We must remain in what we have been taught. John challenges us to hold fast to the tried and true Word of God. Then, we can rest in the promise of eternal life. • How important is it for you to “abide” in Him? • What is your reward/blessing when you “abide” in Him? • The issue is reassurance in face of false teaching. False teaching causes doubt about our salvation; true teaching based on God’s Word reassures us of our salvation. How are you reminded of God’s assurances?
Wrap Up
Show the video again. Encourage the students to think of ways that they can put into practice the applications from this lesson. This week, consider ways to:
• Show your love for God by loving others and by obeying his commandments. • Not allow personal desires, possessions, or pride to get in the way of your love for God and others. • Hold fast to the conviction that Jesus is the divine Son of God. • Not allow anyone to lure you from your Christian faith.

Transition
• What does the world ask for (v.2)? (Everything, and then more)
• 1 John 5:4-5 – What is the source of victory over the temptation to follow the world? (Faith)
Confidence; In Christ
Objective
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the challenge to stand with confidence in Christ even in the face of ridicule and rejection. They will identify specific areas of struggle along with a strategy for dealing with them.
Warm Up
What Would You Do? – Before the session, place signs on opposite walls of the room—one YES and the other NO. Read a list of challenging choices and have students move to the wall that represents their response. Give them an opportunity to explain their choice. Below are a few possible choices to include. You will want to include some others that may apply specifically to your students.
• You’re invited to a party where there will be no adult supervision. Do you go? • A friend offers to give you a ride home from basketball practice. He has his learner’s permit but no license yet. Do you accept his offer? • You have a huge history exam coming up. A friend tells you she got a copy of the test and answer sheet. She offers to share it with you. Do you accept?
This song by Lecrae tells the story of victory over the pull of the world. The song focuses not just on specific issues but also on the reason behind them: Christ in us molding us into His image.
The Video
As students watch the video, have them make note of ideas that stand out to them in the lyrics as well as questions that they may have. They can write their thoughts on the Inside or Outside? section of the Student Guide. After the video, ask them to share and have the group discuss some of the ideas and questions they bring up. You may also want to use a few of the following questions to stimulate discussion.
• What does Lecrae not want to sacrifice in order to be on the inside? (Who he is in Christ) • In what way is he an “outsider”? (The way of the world – those outside of Christ) • How do those on the inside treat outsiders? (Rejection, ridicule) • What is the prison he says he was trying to get into? (The world) • What two things did he discover by following Christ instead of the world? (That he’s free and that there are lots of others like him)
© 2014 INTERLINC • INTERLINC-ONLINE.COM • 800.725.3300
• Where is the home he’s homesick for but has never been before? (Heaven) • What do you think he means by, “We’ll be running through the night. It’s brighter on the other side. Something’s bigger than you and I”? (The promise of eternity)
Transition
Although this song is not as clear and direct as some, knowing the backstory can help us to get what he’s trying to say here. Lecrae was at one time doing everything he could to walk away from God but then was drawn to faith in Christ. His lyrics are full of truths drawn from Scripture.
Bible Study
Assign students to read each of the following verses/passages and answer the question that accompanies each one on The Word section of the Student Guide called. Lead in discussion of their answers. • John 15:18-19 – How should we expect the unbelieving world to act toward us? (Hateful) • 1 John 2:15-17 – What is the destiny of the world? (Death) How can people avoid that destiny? (Follow the will of God)
DALLAS, TEXAS DAVEFELTS@YMAIL.COM
• Romans 12:2 – When we come to know Christ, what happens to us? (Transformation) • John 8:31-36 – What are we set free FROM? (Slavery to sin) What are we set free TO? (Life in Christ) • 1 Peter 2:9 – Who are we when we are “free to be me”? (Chosen, royal, holy, His possession, proclaimers)
Wrap Up
Challenge your students with the idea that our “real me” in Christ is a transformed person with a whole new set of desires. God changes our “want-er” (the part of us that wants stuff). Have the students go to the So What section of the student worksheet and list two or three areas of struggle that he or she has with wanting to fit in with the world around them. Challenge them to identify what they think might be the best way to handle that situation. See if one or two students will share their responses with the group. Lead in prayer for students, asking that He help them to be aware of the temptations to compromise in order to be accepted and to be strong to stand.
