LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
EDITOR’S LETTER
Synergy
+
+
Popcorn and movies. Eggs and bacon. Peanuts and baseball games. Peanut butter and jelly. Chocolate and Valentine’s Day. (Can you tell I’m writing this on an empty stomach?) Some things just seem to go together. And, with the possible exception of chocolate, they’re often better together than they are apart. Like… Music and vid eo. As powerful as music is, the effect is far greater when you put it with video. Don’t get me wrong – I’m a musician, and I work hard at making the music I play the best I’m capable of doing. I believe that music is the language of the soul. And, I believe that when you take a great piece of music and put great video with it, you get a synergistic result. (“Synergy” means that the combined action of tw o things is greater than the sum of their effects individually.) On this Music Video Loop DVD are some awesome music videos. Great songs are given even more effectiveness by the video images that reinforce the message of the music. You’re a wise youth leader when you use these music videos to teach Biblical truth.
+
That’s why we make this magazine. You’ll find a youth meeting guide for each music video on the DVD. These Bible studies are provided for you to use in your youth group. The lessons are written by fellow youth leaders who come from all over the continent and who represent all kinds of ministry settings and styles. When you use these sessions to teach Biblical truth to your young friends, you’re adding y et another layer of synergy: music and video and truth! You’ll find almost twenty-five truth-filled sessions in this magazine (with its online version) – that’s a TON of music, video, and truth for you to use in your ministry with teenagers! Our hope, and our prayer, is that these resources help you to reach and disciple young people for Christ. Who knows what great results will happen when you combine music, video, movies, truth, and your loving effort?! Godspeed,
Ken McCoy Editor

By: Mark Pittman interlínc San Diego, California mpittman@interlinc-online.com
Teaching Point: Use this video as a discussion starter with other youthworkers. The video highlights something we have all encountered – a student who is too much to handle.
Teaching Point: Being content and confident in our own story. Understanding that we are to be a witness to what God has done in our life.
Opening Questions:
Opening Questions: Have you ever seen a car accident take place? If so, what did you see? Did you have to tell a police officer what you saw?
• Have you ever had a time when you couldn’t invest any more – when you were worn out, exhausted, spiritually drained, and emotionally gone? • Have you ever tried to make an excuse for not taking time for a student that wears you out? What happened? How did you feel about that? • Have you had a kid that “cried wolf” so much that you didn’t know when to take him or her seriously? The Clip: Say something like, “Yeah, we’ve all had ‘those’ kinds of kids. Let’s watch a funny video about what really might be going on.” Show the clip. Transition: Explain that God has a habit of using the most unlikely people to further His Kingdom. The students that we would expect to have a huge impact might disappoint us, and those that we wouldn’t expect much from might surprise us. Let’s look at one example. Bible Study: Read Acts 2:14, 41. Peter, the guy who said and did what everyone was thinking – the guy who always had something say about everything – was the person upon which Jesus built His church. • When was a time you went into a conversation with a student expecting one thing and finding out something totally different – something life changing? • What happens when everything gets “real”? Those are the times we all live for – they is why we do what we do. We never know when it will happen – but when it does, we realize that God has prepared this relationship for this moment. • How do you stay focused on what could happen with each conversation, without being sucked into what usually happens? Conclusion: We need to be aware that there might be something important going on in the life of a student that makes itself known in uncomfortable ways. Let’s prayerfully trust the Holy Spirit to use us as a conduit for His love into each student He has entrusted to us.

The Clip: Play the clip and say something like “You’re going to watch a guy named Tim Hawkins be real (and funny) about how he lives out his story and makes mistakes in front of people.” Transition: Ask the students to think about their own “God story” – good, boring, or even funny. Ask them what makes their “God story” theirs. Bible Study: John 9:1-41 – God wants us to share what He has done in our lives. What did the man say when asked about his healing? (v.15) Even after the blind man’s parents are brought in, he still states only the story of what Jesus did in his life. (v.25) The world (or we, ourselves) may make us feel that we don’t know enough to be talking about God. (v.16, 17, 24) How do we let pressure from the world keep us from talking about Jesus? What is amazing and wonderful about the simple sharing of the real things that God has done in our own lives? Simply sharing the story, not the reaction we get, is what is important. (v.34) Although the Pharisees threw him out, Jesus was not done with the healed man. (v.35) Jesus came back to him. How would you feel if you were that guy? Jesus treats you the same. He comes back for you. Conclusion: God will always work in us if we let Him. There are and will always be wonderful, honest, and simple stories to tell of His work in and through us. We do not have to be Billy Graham or have all of the Bible memorized. All we have to say is, “I once was _____ and now I’m ______.” Your story is yours for a reason – just open your mouth and share it!

By: Todd Pearage The Gathering Dayton, Ohio todd@thegatheringdayton.org
Teaching Point: We get exhausted running through our day and trying to please all the different people in our lives instead of just doing the one thing to please the One who loves us the most.
Teaching Point: We are called to follow Jesus’ example and not to compare ourselves to others.
Opening Questions: Do you remember when you were younger and you played “Make Believe”? Who did you like to dress up as? Today you probably don’t tie a blanket around your neck and run around the house or wear a princess outfit, but we all struggle with being who God created us to be. The Clip: Say, “Let’s watch this funny clip from Team WordPlay that shows how ridiculous and exhausting pretending to be someone else can be.” Show the video. Transition: • Okay, so maybe we don’t imitate presidents or actors. But, who else do we try to emulate? • What are some of the things we copy of other people? (Clothes, haircuts, music, etc.) Bible Study: Say, “We all struggle with imitating other people, but Paul tells us in Ephesians 5:1 to ‘Imitate God, in everything you do, because you are His dear children.’ What are some ways in which we can imitate God?”
Opening Questions: Has anyone ever said to you, “Why can’t you be more like _______?” How did that make you feel? Have you ever thought, “I wish I was more like _______?” What are some of the things we compare about ourselves with others? The Clip: Say, We are going to watch a really funny clip by Michael Jr. as he talks about the worst comparison EVER! Check it out.” Show the video. Transition: Say, “Oh man, seriously – how crazy would it have been to have Jesus for your older brother? You know how we always complain; “My parents think he/she is soooo perfect…” Well, Jesus WAS perfect!! UGH!! He NEVER did anything wrong!” Bible Study: What were the two miracles Michael Jr. used to show that Jesus and his younger brother James were different?
“Team WordPlay also said that God made us to do one thing; do you remember what that one thing was?” (Bring Him glory.) Read 1 Corinthians 10:31.
Jesus doesn’t expect us to turn water into wine, walk on water, or be perfect. But He does expect us to follow His example. Read these Scriptures: 1 Peter 1:13-16 and Philippians 2:3-5.
• What do you think “bring God glory” means?
So, what are some ways we can be like Jesus?
• Does everything we do bring Him glory? • Do you see how imitating others instead of imitating God is not only exhausting, but also that it robs God of His glory? • What are some things we can do this week to glorify God with our lives?
5
Conclusion: It’s a simple fact that we compare ourselves to just about everyone we meet. We compare our grades, our skills, our looks, and on and on. Sometimes we like how we compare to others, and sometimes we don’t. But when we compare ourselves to Jesus, we truly see just how far away from perfect we really are.
Conclusion: We need to stop putting so much energy into trying to act and look like other people, and instead focus on being who God created us to be and doing what God created us to do.
Jesus knows we will never measure up to His perfection, but He calls us to follow His example to the best of our ability.

Bible Study
• We all have times when we feel like God is distant or is not listening, or times when we feel as if we are stuck, trapped in a behavior or thought pattern we cannot escape. How would you help a friend who felt this way? What would you tell him or her?
Difficulties; Hope Within
Objective
Students will learn that although God at times feels distant or silent, in reality He always stays close.
Warm Up
Bring in a few household items and/ or gather items from your meeting space: coffee cup, clock, knife, pillow, Tupperware container, stapler, eraser, TV remote, game controller, book, candle, etc. Place them all in a large bag that is not transparent. Ask for volunteers to pick an item from the bag and tell a story (real or imagined) that includes the object.
Hand out the Student Guides. Have your students write three objects that appear in the narrative part of the video.
Transition
Have the students explain the significance of each of these items: white cup and saucer, lamp with large circle as the base, key with round key tag, antique surveyor’s compass, journal. Then, discuss: • Dawn is stuck doing the same things repeatedly. What changes in her pattern at the end of the video? • Why is this significant? • What does this video communicate to you? [On Fireflight’s website, Dawn had this to say about this song, “Sometimes we become a prisoner to our thoughts. We actually believe that our past pain controls our future, and our choices have been taken away from us. It is important to realize that our only hope is to move forward, trusting that God’s power will heal those things we cannot change.”]
© 2012 interlinc • interlinc-online.com • 800.725.3300
Write Psalm 13, Psalm 22, or Psalm 32 on round metal-rim key tags – one passage per tag. Divide the students into three groups by handing each student a key tag. Tell each group to read their Psalm as if it was a journal entry and then answer the questions on the Student Guide. Have the groups come back together and share their answers. Then discuss these questions: • What are the similarities in these Psalms? • Are all the circumstances exactly the same? • Ask the group who had Psalm 22 if they saw any connection to the life and death of Jesus in the Psalm. • These Psalms are all attributed to King David. The Scripture tells us that David was a “man after God’s own heart,” yet he still encountered dark times and felt these strong feelings of despair. Does that encourage you or discourage you and why? • Do you think everyone has a time or times when they feel like God is silent or distant? • When you feel that way, what do you do?
UNKOMMON MEDIA CANTON, GEORGIA MARYBAKERWILSON@GMAIL.COM
Assign each of the three groups one of these verses to look up and read to the entire group - Deuteronomy 31:6; Deuteronomy 31:8; Joshua 1:5. Have them identify what all three verses have in common. (You could write these references on the backside of the key tag). These verses tell us that God is always near, despite how we feel or what we have been through. He will never forsake us.
Wrap Up
You may want to close with the quote from Dawn, and then close in prayer.

Objective
Students will learn that to not be a pushover in their relationship with God, they must follow the path of wisdom with the decisions they make.
Warm Up
Hold a pair of worn, beaten up shoes up in front of the group. Explain that shoes are important in our lives and that each of us likely owns several pairs. Talk about how shoes are put on each morning and go with you wherever you go during the day. Describe how these shoes really tell a story. Ask, “How many states do you think these shoes have been to?” “How many different homes or shopping centers or school have they been in?” “How many different events, parties or ceremonies have they attended?” “How much good or how much bad has this shoe been a part of?”
Ask, “How much input will your shoes have on where you go each day?” Say, “Shoes don’t make decisions for you; they just go with you wherever you go. The problem is that many people will let other people make decisions for them. They let other people decide where they will be headed. They become a pushover.”
The Video
Hand out the Student Guides. Play the “Pushover” video by Manafest. Have the students jot down images or lyrics that really made the message of the song clear.
According to the Bible, the decisions made each day will put someone on either the wise path or the foolish path. Wise living leaves its mark because it stands out from the crowd. This study will highlight the path of the wise and what that looks like. Have the students form four different groups. Have each person in the group read the passage. Then have the groups use the Student Guide to answer the questions. When each group is done, they should present their answers to the other groups.

There are so many choices we make each day. People love to have fun but don’t like the consequences that sometimes come with it. Each person can follow wisdom and avoid some of the pitfalls of just going with the crowd. That means actually standing up for what is right and avoiding what is popular in favor of what is wise.

MICHEAL S. PARDUE
Read: John 8:12. Jesus makes the claim of being the “light of the world” – an important title and one of the “I Am” sayings found throughout John’s Gospel.
say they are followers of the Light and that they know Christ and have trusted in Him, and yet there is no difference when their life is examined. We can see clearly from Jesus’ life that this means living in such a way as to imitate Christ. Having the Light of Life means living like the One who can give both light and life.
Theme
Difficulties; Hope Within
Objective
Students will understand that Jesus is light in both the darkness of the world and the darkness of their lives.
Warm Up
Set up an obstacle course with chairs and tables. Have the students partner up. One student will be blindfolded at one end of the obstacle course and the other student will stand at the opposite end of the obstacle course. The other student will give verbal directions to navigate through the course. All the students should do this simultaneously. Chaos will ensue!
Transition
Call on several students to explain what navigating the obstacle course in the darkness was like. Ask if they found it easier to navigate when they heard a voice telling them which way to go.
The Video
Have the students partner with the person next to them. Ask them to make a list during the video of all the difficult things the singer says he faces. Show the video.
Transition
Ask students to share with you one thing they heard during the video. Answers to the question will vary, but here are a few of the things they may list: Lost in sea of gray; tangled in the wires; crushed beneath a weight; cursing every step; crippling fear; raging wind. Ask the students if they remember what the singer said he would do when he faced the difficulties. (Answer: Touch this light.)
Bible Study
Ask students to write around the broken bulb in the Student Guide times when they have experienced darkness. Then ask them to write ways that Jesus is the light in our world, and ways He wants us to be light during the Bible study.
Light of the World – When Jesus came into the world, He provided a contrast between the “light” and the “darkness” that was not previously available to those who walked in the darkness. In the video, the songwriter is struggling with fear and hopelessness. He is dealing with the darkness that Jesus came to combat. We should follow Him who is the Light of the world, the Light that comes to enlighten all men, the One who comes to give life through His light. Will Not Walk in Darkness – Thus, the contrast. We cannot claim to be followers of the Light while we maintain a relationship with the darkness. The two are simply not compatible. If we are followers of the Light, we will not walk in darkness, because walking in darkness is not consistent with loving the Light. The songwriter tells us he wants to touch the light. He doesn’t like the darkness he sees around him. He wants out. He wants something more. Have the Light of Life – Jesus makes clear that there will be a difference between those who follow Him and those who do not. Too many people

Wrap Up
The light from the sun is warming every inch of the world around us. That light sustains life here on earth. Jesus says that He is much more important than the sun because there was a time when darkness covered the face of the waters, but when He spoke everything that is now existing came into being. He is the Light of the world and if you follow Him you cannot walk in darkness. Light and dark are in such contrast that it is impossible for the two to coexist. If you are a follower of Christ, you must walk in the Light of Life. You must follow Him and proclaim life as He did and still does through His Word. You must the Light and be, therefore, light in a world that is lost and dying. This world can be such a dark place. However, Jesus is light – so stay close to Him, the source of light and life in this dark and sinful world.

FALLIN’ (FEAT. J PAUL)
PAUL TURNER

The Video
Objective
Transition
Avoiding The Face-Plant – Falling is inevitable but we can take steps to keep from falling. Here are a few verses about some cliffs we need to stay away from.
Falling To Success – Failure is never fatal or final. Falling can be avoided if we stay away from the cliffs that cause us to fall in our faith, like that party, or that girl or guy, or that music, etc. This week your sins may have kept you from reading your Bible or praying, but like at the end of the video, Trip prayed, repented, and was transported back to that heavenly place of blessing where God wants us. One more verse of encouragement from our friend Solomon about falling in Proverbs 24:16, “For a righteous man falls seven times, and rises again, but the wicked stumble in time of calamity.” Sin will cause us to fall, but the real sin is not trusting God to forgive us and to set our lives right.
Fear of Failure
Falling (failing) spiritually is no fun, but God is there when we do fall.
Warm Up
Falling is scary. That is why the Trust Fall continues to be an effective tool to illustrate faith. Ask a student if he or she trusts you. If the answer is “Yes” – have him or her stand facing away from you with hands at his or her sides and eyes closed. On your command, he or she falls back and you catch him or her. Repeat with as many students as are willing. (P.S. Don’t let them fall!)
Transition
To live as Christians we have to trust God – which is easy to do when things are going great, but much harder we are falling and failing. When we feel that life is out of control and our walk with God is not going as planned, we have to trust that He is still with us. That is what Trip Lee is talking about in this video.
Show the video of “Fallin’” by Trip Lee featuring J Paul.
Let’s see if you were paying attention. • Where was Trip when this video started? • What caused him to fall? Where did that come from? • What was the area like that he fell? (Color, etc.) • What was the second area like that he fell? How do you interpret that? • What happened to him when he prayed and asked for forgiveness? Let’s check the Word, and see what God has to say about this.
Bible Study
Fear of Falling – Does the fear of falling or failing in your walk with God keep you from living completely for Him? Newsflash: We all fall. Falling hurts, but it will not kill you. God paid too high of a price for our sins to allow our failures to push Him away that easily. Ephesians 1:3-6 says that God has blessed us with all blessing “in heavenly places.” That is where God wants us – like Trip, living in the heavenly state of mind and in the blessing of God.

• The wise Solomon tells us in Proverbs 17:20 that if we guard our mouths, we will avoid the fall. Another way to keep from falling is to have strong believing friends. • Solomon also wrote Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, “If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!” Another wise man, Alfred the Butler (in the first Batman movie said, “Why do we fall down Master Bruce? So we can learn to get back up.” • Finally, look at Paul’s words in 1 Timothy 6:9, “Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.” We can avoid the fall if we keep God as our true desire. We can avoid the fall, and we can also learn through our fall.

Control
Objective
Are we really in control? We hold a remote control for the TV, have a game controller for every type of video game, and we even control numerous apps on our phones! But are we really in control? Today more than ever we leave the impression that we are in control when really…we never had control at all. So what are we left to do? Should we wobble too and fro, and throw our hands up in the air?
Warm Up
As the students arrive have, if possible, several versions of the old “Weeble Wobbles” childhood toys or even the blow up punching bags. Have the students play with the toys by having them try to make them lie down. Have them see if they can control the motions of the toys. They really can’t. The toys are made to stay in an upright position. They have no control.
Have the students answer the following questions: • Is it okay to simply have fun and lose control? • It is okay to be silly and have fun, all while still being an example? • Do you ever try to control others?
The Video
By this time the students will be thinking along the lines of the theme of this session, and you can use the video to reinforce that direction, or to raise additional questions about the topic. A video used in this way can be a strong “hook” on which to hang the truth of Scripture. Show the video.

Read Romans 12:1-2 to the students. These verses are often used with students to remind them to be transformed by the Word instead of confirming to the patterns of this world. But with this video and this verse together, can the message be the same? We try to control minds by controlling how others see us. (Romans 12:4-5) We, as believers, have a collective calling. While we are different parts of the “body” we all have the same end goal and function. We try to control how we see ourselves. (Proverbs 25:28; Romans 12:3) “Measuring our value by how much faith God has given us.” Is that possible? Do we really know how much God really has given us? If we did, would we really need to be in control? We try to control how God sees us. (Romans 12:6) God has given us the ability to do things well, so why do we feel as if we still have to do more? Sure we spend time trying to please our earthly parents, but how much do we try to control God’s perception of us? Can we really do that?

And all the rappers I idolize tell me that I’m never right. Now my skin is light and I ain’t fitting in. Prejudice
Objective
Students will see that prejudice of any kind is wrong and they need to do whatever they can to end it.
Warm Up
Clumps – Divide the group into clumps by saying, “Form a group according to…” (height, hair color, # cavities, # siblings, shirt color, number of people in your immediate family, month of birth, favorite color, grade, middle initial, school you attend, etc.) Once in their groups, read a question from the list below (or write your own) and everyone in the group answers. When the majority in the crowd has answered, direct to students to form a different clump. • What is your favorite cartoon (or cartoon character)? • Who do you most admire? • What animal is most like your personality? • What would you do with $100,000? • What do you hope to be doing in ten years?
• What did you learn from that game? • How did you feel when you were different from others? • How did you feel when you were the same as others?
The Video
Hand out the Student Guides and say, “Let’s watch KJ-52’s video with Lecrae called ‘They Like Me.’ As you watch, try to fill in the blanks for the chorus.” Show the video.
Transition
Ask, “How did Lecrae and KJ use the same style of music (rap) to share their very different experiences?” Lecrae starts off by rapping, “Some folks said it was worldly, it was too good. Some folks was scared of it, it was too ’hood. So I took it to the places that would embrace it. And sometimes believe it or not it was white faces.” What are some things that stand out as unusual or strange to you? Next we hear KJ say, “I got blue eyes, light skin, and some black curls. Grew up the white kid in a black world. When ya live and ya different, well the facts hurt. Moved to the ’burbs and don’t fit

Ask, “Have you ever been rejected? Why? How did you feel (other than “rejected”) when that happened?” Any kind of rejection hurts, but KJ and Lecrae are talking about being rejected because of the color of their skin. If you’ve experienced that kind of rejection, share with us what happened and how you felt. If you have not experienced that, how do you think that feels? Read Galatians 3:28. • What is Paul telling us in this verse? • How do KJ and Lecrae tell us the same thing? (They like me forget about the color I might be. It’s likely they just like me. We different but the same we covered by the blood of the King.) • What are some ways we can show that no matter who they are, they are “like me”?
THE GATHERING DAYTON, OHIO TODD@THEGATHERINGDAYTON.ORG
• Can you imagine walking into youth group and someone telling you that you had to sit on the floor or stand in a corner? • Now imagine someone walking in behind you and they get the best seat in the place. How would that make you feel? • What does the Bible call it when we “favor some people over others”? • Have you ever committed that sin? Would you be willing tonight to confess that sin?
Wrap Up
Say, “We need to do everything we can to end prejudice. In the last verse KJ says, ‘Why we got to segregate Sunday 10-1? So much to overcome now from what’s been done. But if it starts with me (then what?) then I’ll be the one.’ What can you do next week to make sure EVERYONE is welcomed to youth group?” Say, “Let’s close in prayer – and during the prayer there will be a time when it will be quiet. Use this time to talk to God and ask Him to forgive you for when you have treated some people better and some people poorly because of prejudice.”

Warm Up

Person One drinks the water and then Person Two joins Person One and they run back to the start where Person Three awaits. Once there, Person One and Two eat a cracker. Person Three joins them and they run back across the room. Now all three drink water and they all race back to the start line. Here’s the catch: only two feet can be touching the ground at any one time per team, so one person will need to carry all the others.

People often think that becoming a Christian means no longer having difficulties in life. But Jesus doesn’t say we won’t have problems – instead, He promises to help us through them. God’s peace and rest are available to us, but we must trust in Jesus – not to take away our problems, but to provide what we need to endure. Resting in Jesus means not worrying about the things that stress us out, but relying on the Spirit for the strength to do what God has called us to do. In the next verse, Jesus explains what He wants us to do: to carry His yoke. A yoke is a wooden crosspiece that is fastened over the necks of two animals and attached to a plow or cart that they are to pull. Salvation; Regeneration (New Life)
Objective
Students learn that no matter what they have been through, Jesus can give them new life through forgiveness and grace.
Warm Up
Hand out the Student Guides. Talk with the students about forgiveness and grace and how hard they both are to give and to receive. Share with them a personal example of a time you had difficulty forgiving someone and a story of someone who had trouble believing God could forgive them. Have the students complete the Getting Started section of the Student Guide.
Transition
Say something like, “In reality we know that there is no sin God will not forgive if we only confess and repent. Even in our sinful state, God still loves us and wants us to live abundant lives. Peter Furler, longtime drummer and then lead singer for Newsboys, has a video for the song ‘I’m Alive.’ The song explores how even when we feel lost and separated from God we are never alone.”
The Video
Say, “As you listen and watch, think about our main idea: God is in the business of redemption, restoration, and forgiveness. Pick out lyrics that help illustrate ways God rescued the songwriter.” Play the video.

Bible Study
Have the students read these verses (provided in the Student Guide) and write short responses to each verse focusing on what they have to say about the nature of God and the love of Jesus: • Mark 2:17 – On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” • John 8:10-11 – Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.” • Romans 8:38-39 – For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Play the video a second time, this time asking the students to complete the Video section of the Student Guide. Go over the lyrics with them, and discuss what the songwriters are saying about restoration and redemption. Discuss Share John 10:10 with the students, particularly what it means to “hit the and ask for a discussion about what wall of shame” and how that might “the abundant life” looks like in our apply to their lives. world today. Why is forgiveness so difficult?

Bible Study
Explain what each of these Scriptures say about the love of God. Mark 2:17
John 8:10-11 Romans 8:38-39 John 10:10 tell us that Jesus came so that we might have an “abundant life.” What does that mean, and how does it relate to being truly alive?
Wrap Up
It has been said that the only thing worse than not crying out in despair is having no one to cry out to. God is not waiting for you to get it right before He loves you. Jesus came because we are not capable of getting it right on our own. He is there for us in the desert. He is there for us in the storm. He is there for us when we fail and fall short. Because Jesus is always there, we can shout out, “I’m Alive!” The songwriters say that they want to thank God for this amazing gift. We should do the same. Write a prayer thanking God for loving YOU and for sending Jesus to restore your relationship with Him.

Students will learn that they have the confidence to live out loud for Jesus.
Warm Up
Hand out the Student Guides. Encourage the students to write, under the Got No Skills heading, that which they are not really good at doing. Maybe it is skiing, math, or dancing. Whatever it is, write it. Give your students a few minutes to work on this and then ask for some volunteers to talk about their list. You, as a leader, definitely want to share your worst talent. When someone tells something they are not good at doing, ask the group if anyone else has the same trouble. Doing this lets the teens know they are not alone.

Discuss briefly what the main thought or key idea that the band was trying to get across. If anyone has the word “confidence” listed, encourage your teens to see that with Jesus in our lives, we can go forward in life. Sure there are rough times, but Jesus can help us through it. What skills you confident in? Write those under Got Skills! God gives us talents and abilities to live out this life with confidence for Him. Discuss some of what your students write down. Ask if some would even like to demonstrate those skills.

In Isaiah 36 - 37, King Hezekiah was ruling in Israel. The Assyrian army had been on a rampage throughout the country and was killing off Hezekiah’s people city by city. Jerusalem was next on the list. One of the field commanders of the Assyrian army sent a note on behalf of the King of Assyria to Hezekiah questioning his ability to win. Read Isaiah 36:4-10. Hezekiah needed to trust God to save them, and that very confidence was being called into question. He sent word to Isaiah the prophet for advice. Isaiah told them to be confident in God. Read Isaiah 37:5-7. God was already planning to rescue them from their enemies. A message was sent back to the Assyrian camp that spelled their doom. Have some volunteers read the reply found in Isaiah 37:21-35. That was the warning God sent back and in verses 36 and 37 was the results of messing with God and His people: 185,000 soldiers were killed in the middle of the night by the angel of the Lord! So what is your “185,000”? What chance does it stand against the power of God? What is holding you back from living out loud by the power of the Holy Spirit for the Risen Son of God?

Read Acts 17:27. Explain that we should seek God in the hope that we might feel our way toward Him and find Him. Yet, He is actually not far from each one of us. • How should we seek God? (With all our heart and soul) Have volunteers look up and read Deuteronomy 4:29 and Jeremiah 29:13 to the group. Discuss: • When do you feel the farthest from God? • What can we do to turn on the light and find God? (Read Gods Word; go to church, even when you don’t feel like it, especially when you don’t feel like it! We draw strength from other Christians.) Now have a couple more volunteers read John 14:23-24 and Hebrews 10:25 to the group. Discuss: • We used a flashlight to find our letter in a dark room; who is the light of this world? When we have Jesus we will never be in darkness.

In the video, the man who leapt off the roof did not fall to his death. Instead, he began to rise upward. God has you in the palm of His hand, and following Him means jumping off the roof of your life straight into His plan for you. With God, you can trust that you will not fall. In fact, you will soar! As the song says, you too can be on fire for the God who saved you!
Offer students a chance to find salvation. Pray for them, and do what’s appropriate for your group that allows them to “call on the name of the Lord” and turn from their old sinful ways and turn to God’s forgiveness and new direction in life. Celebrate any who decide to take the leap, showing to them how excited God is about their decision.

Objective
The objective of this lesson is to open the eyes of our students to the horrors of human trafficking and how they can be involved to help stop it.
Warm Up
Sharks and Minnows – The group starts out on one side of the field or room with one person in the middle of the room. The person in the middle will call out Sharks (boys) or Minnows (girls). He or she will then specify how they are to cross the room (running, backwards, hop on one foot, etc.) The person in the middle will then chase in the same manner that he or she called out. If tagged, Sharks or Minnows sit right where they were tagged and become Seaweed. This seaweed has to stay on their backsides, but they can tag others that are crossing as long as they are sitting. Those tagged by Seaweed become Seaweed too. Play several games as time permits.
Transition
Ask the group how they would feel if it wasn’t a game and someone was actually trying to capture them, control them, and no one was there to help them.
Hand out the Student Guides and tell the group that they will watch a video of the song “Justus” by the Washington Project. The images and words of the song will give them just a tiny glimpse into the world of human trafficking. Have the students write down the statistics that are given in the video. You might need to show the video a couple of times because there is so much information in it.
Transition
Ask the students what statistics they discovered from the video. Ask the students if they have heard about human trafficking before this video. If so, how did they learn about it? Ask the students how they reacted to the information about human trafficking.
Bible Study
Say something link, “You might be thinking, ‘Well, this is going to be a weird study – what does the Bible say about human trafficking?’ Or, ‘How can I do anything about it?’ The Bible does talk about evil in the world and what we, as Christ’s follows, need to do. Students will more fully understand the meaning of the Kingdom of God.
Warm Up
Name that King – The game is played boys versus girls, so choose one of each gender to stand with you at the front to represent their teams. Each team will be asked three questions for a total of six questions in the game. The team with the most correct answers wins. There is a seventh question to use as a tiebreaker if necessary. To decide who gets to answer the tiebreaker, give the ladies the opportunity to choose to answer the question (before anyone hears it) or to pass it to the guys. Here are the questions and answers: Girls: Known for lighting his gardens with the bodies of burning Christians. (Caesar Nero) Boys: Known for abusive practices using ancient Jews as slaves to build the empire. (Pharaoh) Girls: Known for his talent of dancing, this king died a mysterious death. (Michael Jackson – King of Pop)
Boys: Known for his bushy sideburns, this king died from a substance overdose. (Elvis Presley – King of Rock) Girls: Known for building the first Temple in ancient Israel. (Solomon) Boys: Known for solving a maternity dispute by suggesting a child be cut in half and shared when two women both claimed to be the child’s mother. (Solomon) Tiebreaker: Biblical king who became a great reformer years after taking over the throne at the age of eight. (Josiah)

Give everyone opportunity to share their answers and then reflect a little more with these questions:
Theme Relationships
Objective
Students will identify the reasons behind broken relationships and discover how God longs to heal and mend their relationships.
Warm Up
Find some copies of People magazine, Entertainment Weekly, and some other magazines that have articles about celebrity relationships. Distribute one or two of these to each small group within your larger group. Hand out the Student Guides. Have the youth turn to the Busted Student Guide section and complete the assignment.
Reflection
Give your groups opportunity to reveal their findings. Follow-up with these questions:
• What do you believe are the top reasons relationships sometimes go bad? • What makes a bad relationship get worse? • What is at least one action step that you could take as soon as conflicts begin to arise to avoid letting the relationship get to an irreparable stage?
Say something like, “When sin came into the world, so did brokenness. When they sinned, the perfect relationship Adam and Eve had with God resulted in separation. Their relationship with each other – and all the relationships to follow – struggled with pride, selfishness, and conflict. Let’s look at the question of broken relationships, and the answer of God’s healing power.”
Watch the video together and give a few minutes for each person to complete the assignment under The River on the Student Guide.
Transition
Survey your group and find out what they wrote down under each of the statements. These questions will add more depth to the message of the song:
• Using one-word adjectives, how would you describe this relationship? • What is the significance of the “the river”? • What is the songwriter’s attitude toward the relationship? (She had hope; i.e. “I’m not giving up…”) • How will this be helpful in bringing it back to wholeness?

Say something like, “God longs for our relationships to be healthy and whole. His sacrifice on the cross for us provided hope for our relationship with God and others. Let’s go to the Bible and discover more of what it says about this restoration.” Invite your group to work on the Life in the River section in a solo time and then come back together.
• What is significant about the source of the river? (It comes only from God.) • What is important about the trees growing on both sides of the river? (These trees show this water really is bringing life.) • Why do you think “they will see His face” was so noteworthy? (In ancient times, criminals were banished from the presence of the king; our sin keeps us from seeing God.) • What is the importance of “light” in our lives in contrast to “darkness”?

Lead students to share and discuss their answers. Help them to see that while physical attraction is part of the picture, there is much more to being in love. Also, based on Dominic’s explanation, what role did friendship play in their love story?
Read John 15:13 and discuss how that idea fits in with the characteristics in the 1 Corinthians 13 passage.
Theme
Love; Romantic
Objective
Students will explore what it means to experience love for a person of the opposite sex according to God’s plan and purpose.
Warm Up
Have the group sit in a circle with one student left in the middle. That student tries to get someone from the circle to take his/her place by kneeling in front of him or her, looking in his or her eyes, and saying, “Baby, if you love me, won’t you please, please smile?” If the person smiles or laughs, they switch places, and the new person goes to say the same thing to another person in the circle.
Transition
The Video
To introduce the video, read what Dominic said about this song: “I met my wife when I was seventeen and she was sixteen. We were friends for two more years before either of us ever had a thought of anything more. At the end of her senior year of high school, she invited me to go to her prom. That night we fell in love. We got married one year and a half later, and in February of 2012 we celebrated our ten-year anniversary.” Pass out the Student Guides and instruct the students to answer the questions in the Give, or Take? section.

Transition
Love and relationships can be very confusing, but we can find some solid help in God’s word.
Bible Study
Have the group stand in the middle of the room. Read the statement below and have the students move to the right side of the room if they agree and to the left side if they disagree.
Love that serves as the foundation for a lasting marriage relationship is selfgiving instead of self-serving. Ask students to explain why they chose to agree or disagree with the statement. After some sharing, have students sit in groups of 4 or 5 and work together to complete the And Now A Word From Our Creator section of the worksheet. After a few minutes, lead a discussion of what those characteristics would look like in a dating relationship and in a marriage relationship.
INDIAN HILLS BAPTIST CHURCH GRAND PRAIRIE, TEXAS DAVEFELTS@YMAIL.COM
Wrap Up
Living as followers of Christ can present some real challenges in the area of love and dating because the counsel of God in His Word runs counter to much of what our culture promotes. Have the students each write in the How To Say “I Love You” section at least one of the biblical characteristics of love that they need to develop as they are looking for true love. Lead in prayer for students to be wise in their choices and to follow the leadership of the Holy Spirit as they learn how to love another person according to God’s plan and purpose.

Love; Unconditional
Objective
Students will learn about God’s unconditional love.
Warm Up
The warm up for this lesson is a simple game of tag. The only variation is the base is a person. As long as the “Base Person” is touching another player, that player is safe.
Transition
(Note to youth leader: When I started writing this lesson I wasn’t sure which way to go. The video is very much a story of romantic love, and yet the lyrics seemed to be about God’s love for us. I found a youtube video of Cory Lamb talking about this song (v=YAu3HAEWse8) and he related the song to the story of the prodigal son and the idea of God and our loved ones being there for us and ready to receive us back.) Discuss questions such as:
• What does being “safe” mean to you? • How can love make us feel safe?
The Video
Hand out the Student Guides and say, “Cory Lamb’s ‘Safe In Your Arms’ deals with love in the midst of a struggle. As you watch the video, fill in the storyline on your Student Guide.” Show the video.
Transition
Explain that the video ends with the woman safely in her husband’s arms. That’s what real love does – it welcomes us back.
Bible Study
The Bible says that love never fails. (1 Corinthians 13:8) Love is unconditional. The ones who really love us will welcome us back. The Bible tells us that God is love (1 John 4:8, 16) so just as love never fails, so God never fails, and He never fails to love. People may let us down, but the ultimate love is God’s love. When we turn from God, we can turn back to Him and know that He will receive us back. We are safe in His arms. If we will love like God does, we will need to forgive and love unconditionally. Jesus told a story that illustrates that truth. For this lesson, we will use the very familiar story of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-27). Have the students fill in the blanks of their Student Guides as you discuss the story together.

The Storyline
Luke 15:11-27
The video tells the story of a woman out on the streets. In the opening shot, she is watching a happy couple and begins to have a flashback to happier times.
What was the younger son’s request?
What happy times does she see as she remembers? What was the father’s response?
What is the incident that causes it all to fall apart?
What did the younger son do with what he received?
What was the result? How does she end up on the streets? What was the younger son’s idea to fix his situation? What is her husband’s reaction to her leaving? When the younger son’s father saw him again, what did he do?
How does the story end?
How does this story relate to God’s love for us?
What does it teach us about loving others? Real, unconditional love always welcomes us back. That’s the way God loves.

even pray, all for the sake of being seen. When this is the reason for being involved in godly activities, then they have become idols. (Read 1 Samuel 15:22 to the group.) Ask, “In light of this verse, what is most important to God?” (Discuss answers.)
Wrap Up
Transition
Idolatry is a heart issue. It doesn’t matter if someone is talking about going to church, studying, playing a sport, or any other activity. If the focus is on self and not God, then idols exist in that person’s life.
Theme Idolatry
Objective
Your students will realize that not all idols are made of wood and stone; many are made of the activities that fill their lives.
Warm Up
American Idolatry – This game is simply charades of famous people. Divide your group into two teams. Each team chooses one person to act as a famous person. The other team gets to choose the famous person. The teams will alternate turns, trying to guess who their “actor” is portraying. A turn is over when the “acting” team guesses correctly, or a time limit is reached. Award one point for every correct guess.
Transition
Say, “We may believe that there are no idols among today’s Christian teenagers. However, if each person examines his or her own life, can the claim be made that there is nothing placed before God? Can the claim be made that God has first place in every area? If not, then there is idol worship!”
Hand out the Student Guides. As the song plays, encourage the students to list, under the My Week heading, the activities that consume their time each week.
Say, “This song refers to the everyday idols that we have. Idols do not have to be wood or stone. Idols can come in the form of sports, relationships, things, and even academics.”
Bible Study
Most people would not admit to worshipping idols. However for many, idols exist as everyday activities. For instance, if a sporting event constantly takes a person away from fellowship with the Body, the sport could be an idol. If extra studying time for a test is gained by not reading one’s devotions, then grades could be an idol. These things are good, but potentially used in a bad way. Unfortunately for many, idols are a reality. Everyday activities start to replace God and His plan for our lives.
Ask, “Can going to church, reading your Bible, and praying become idols?” (Discuss answers.) These absolutely can become idols. At times, people go to church, read their Bible, and
© 2012 interlinc • interlinc-online.com • 800.725.3300
However, not every time someone misses church, or devotions, or forgets to pray, means that there is idol worship taking place. The question of “habit” must be raised. A person’s habit or routine is a good indicator of idol worship activities. Ask, “If you have something planned with the church and something else comes up, will you drop the church activity? Why?” (Discuss answers.) Ask, “If you have something planned outside the church and a church activity comes up, will you drop the outside activity? Why?” (Discuss answers.) Say, “God said that there were to be no other gods but Him. (Read Exodus 20:3 to the group.) How many of those activities that you listed under My Week indicate time spent glorifying God?”
FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH MILTON, PENNSYLVANIA IOWABB61@HOTMAIL.COM
Say, “Satan is the master of deceit. (Read Revelation 12:9 to the group.) He will use good things to ruin good people. Are you using the items that you listed under My Week to glorify God, or are they leading you away from God? Can you change these to glorify God, or do you simply need to get rid of them?” Instruct your students to pray over their lists and to consider the questions under Wrap Up. Offer your students the chance to meet with the youth staff to discuss any questions or confusion they may have about something being an idol or not. Be sure to let your students know that you are praying for them.

What does 1 Samuel 15:22 say about godly deeds?
In the space provided, list the idols in your life that you will prayerfully turn over to God. Note what changes you will make to the idols that you listed under “My Week.” Ask someone to help hold you accountable.
How is idolatry a heart issue?
When is it okay to miss church, skip devotions, or skip prayer? Is it ok?
Did God really include our daily activities in Exodus 20:3?
In light of what we have studied, what is a good definition of idolatry?

Theme Trust in God
Objective
Students will realize that putting their trust in God may be scary but it’s a necessity that is worth doing.
Warm Up
Do You Trust Me? – Before students arrive, write on 3x5 cards some “Dares” such as “You must fall back into someone’s arms,” “You must stick you hand in this jello to find a prize,” “You must put your hand into this bag, feel what is in there, and describe it,” “You must hold out your tongue and taste whatever is placed on your tongue,” “You must allow someone to feed you.” You will also need a blindfold. Set up all your dares ahead of time. Depending on the size of your group, you might need two groups, the “Darers” and the “Darees” – plus you will need stuff like jello, gross stuff in bags, baby food, weird-flavored Jelly Belly beans, whipped cream (to be fed), etc. The object is to see the “Daree” trust the “Darer.”
Transition
Have the students share how they felt being the “Daree” or the “Darer” and how trusting someone blindfolded felt. Would they have felt differently if they could see what was being dared? Would they have felt different if the darer was their best friend?
The Video
Tell the students that they will be watching a video by Stephanie Smith about letting go and trusting God. Show the video.
Transition
Ask whether there are parts of that song that they can relate to such as – have they ever been afraid to let go of the control of their lives? Have they ever given control of something in their lives to someone else? What was it? How did that make them feel?

Bible Study
Have the students look up these verses and fill in the blanks.
• God is forever, He is eternal. (Isaiah 26:4) The Bible says that heaven and earth will be gone someday, but God will remain.
• John 14:1 – Do not let your heart be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.
• He will make our way straight, He will give direction to our lives. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
• Psalm 9:10 – Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you. • Isaiah 26:4 – Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord is the rock eternal. • Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Have a time of discussion about what they found in these verses. Do we see any patterns? THEY ALL HAVE TO DO WITH TRUST. What word is present in all these verses? TRUST. What is the pattern? IF WE TRUST IN GOD, HE WILL TAKE CARE OF US. • He will calm our hearts. (John 14:1) • We will not be forsaken. (Psalm 9:10) The word “forsaken” means to be abandoned. So, if we trust in Him, He will always be there for us; He will not abandon us.
So what have we learned? If we trust God, He will always be there for us, keep up calm, will not leave us; He will give direction to our lives, and He will remain with us forever. Wow, pretty amazing isn’t it? We trust Him, and He delivers!
Wrap Up
So do you trust Him? Are there areas in your life you need to give up and give to Him, trusting Him because He knows what’s best for you? Let’s watch that video again. If you know areas that you need to give to Him, talk to God and do exactly that while we watch the video. Then we will close in prayer.

Lean On Me – Have your students get in a circle and hold hands. Number off, 1 – 2 – 1 – 2. (Every other person should be a 1, and vice-versa.) On the count of three, have the 1’s lean as far forward into the circle as they can, and have the 2’s lean as far backward out of the circle as they can. See how close they can all get to the ground without falling over or dropping hands.
Transition
Share a story or time when you were told to trust somebody when doing so seemed absolutely ridiculous. Discuss:
• Why is trust so important in a relationship? • What happens when a relationship has no trust? Hand out the Student Guides. Show the video. While the students watch and listen, have them answer this question on their Student Guide: What promises does the song say God will give us? (freedom, sleep, way back home, light, hope, life)
Bible Study
Just as trust is important for any other healthy relationship, there needs to be trust with God. Read Numbers 21:4-9. Context: Moses is leading God’s chosen people out of Egypt to the Promised Land. They have experienced many miracles, and yet have disobeyed God in many ways. Now they come upon another problem. Discuss these questions: • What was the main problem in this Bible story? (The people didn’t trust God. They wanted more from Him than what He was giving. They didn’t trust God’s perfect plan. They thought they knew better.) • How did God test their trust and ultimately fix it too? (Sent snakes and instructed Moses to construct a bronze serpent that would save the people.) • How does this story connect with Jesus dying on the cross for us? (It’s a foreshadowing but teaches us that we should always trust God – which means to trust Him even if it seems strange.)
