Objective
Students will be encouraged to strive for something and achieve it through hard work and determination, despite what the mainstream culture says or thinks.
Warm Up
Abdul must not reveal what was actually on the paper guessed incorrectly. He just stuffs it in his pocket or hands it to his assistant. Another slip of paper is held to his forehead, and Abdul then repeats the sentence that was actually on the previous paper. After rubbing his forehead, he opens this second slip of paper, confirms that he is correct and asks for the person who wrote that sentence to identify himself or herself. Everyone is impressed. Another paper is drawn and again, Abdul repeats the sentence that was on the previously opened slip. Each time he opens up a slip of paper to see whether he is “correct” he is actually learning the next sentence. The important thing is to stay one slip ahead and focus on remembering it. When Abdul comes to his own slip, which has been held until last because of its identifying mark, he repeats the sentence on the previous slip, and that takes care of all them. If this is done smoothly, it will really baffle the group.
Have the students write out their greatest ambition in life in one simple sentence on a slip of paper. The slips are then folded, collected, and “Abdul” (who should be dressed appropriately) proceeds to perform the task of reading the sentences to the group, without opening the papers. How is it done? Here’s the trick: Abdul also puts one slip of paper in the box along with the others, only he puts an identifying mark on his. When the reading starts, he picks one of the slips from the box, rubs it on his forehead without opening it, and offers any sentence as a guess of what is on the paper. He then looks at the paper, and to his dismay he is wrong, but that will soon be forgotten. He explains, “Things “This Goes Out to You” by P.O.D. don’t feel quite right yet. The mood of encourages us to celebrate. The band the room is not with me! Are you with celebrates their success, and is wise me? Are you really with me? Bible Study
Hand out the Student Guides. Use this outline to teach the Bible Study, and encourage the students to take notes. Encourage group discussion when answering the questions.
Selfish Ambition Today, selfishly ambitious behavior is greatly applauded. But, the Bible considers selfish ambition as evil. • It is one of the works of the flesh that we read about in Galatians 5:20. • Romans 2:8 says that God’s wrath awaits those who are selfishly ambitious. • James 3:14-16 tells us that the logic of a selfishly ambitious person comes from the devil. • Philippians 1:17 warns us that even ministers of the gospel can be selfseeking and proud, and so Paul gives us a warning in Philippians 2:3-5.

CHURCH OF GOD, CLEVELAND TN JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI DEWAYNE@YMCNETWORK.ORG
Blind ambition has caused many people to compromise their convictions (if they ever had any), violate their beliefs, sacrifice their character, and use everybody in their way. And it is true: ambition is often associated with pride, with a sort of evil aggression and self-centeredness. Ambition is often associated with people that we call “driven” – who are insensitive to those around them. One could even associate ambition with the idea of being careless. Positive Ambition Look Up! Ephesians 5 is about trying to learn how to please the Lord. Its author, Paul, wrote of this topic over and over and over in his letters. His highest goal was to please the Lord. Look Out! Philippians 3:13-14 tells us to finish the race we have started. Without positive goals and ambition, you may find yourself wanting to quit and give up. HOLD ON! Your race isn’t complete until the day you pass from this life into the next!
Wrap Up
You can live a life with positive ambition, as long as you strive for the right goals. Don’t settle for selfish things; look to the author and finisher of your faith!

FIX MY EYES
JEREMY WHITE
TRY has a new song called “Fix My Eyes” that focuses on this theme.
rituals that Jesus’ once-for-all sacrifice had brought to an end!
Theme Victory
Objective
Students will think deeply about fixing their eyes on Jesus as they “forget what is behind and press on toward the goal” until God brings us to Heaven.
Warm Up
Ask for volunteers to shoot Nerf-style dart-guns at targets. Make sure that the rest of the group can see the targets. At first, have the participants fire at the target while looking. Then, blindfold them and spin them around a few times and ask them to fire at the same target. If you have the equipment and facilities, you could take this outdoors and use paintball guns, or step it up indoors to air-soft guns and targets. (Make sure you take proper safety precautions!)
Transition
Explain that shooting successfully is much easier when you’re able to fix your eyes on the target. Explain that the book of Hebrews is all about encouraging early Jewish believers to keep their eyes fixed upon Jesus and not to get distracted by anything else— including even their former religious practices. As a group, read Hebrews 12:1-3. Explain that for KING &COUN-
The Video
Have students watch and listen carefully to “Fix My Eyes” – paying close attention to any concepts or ideas that jump out at them.
Transition
Explain that regret is a very normal emotion, but that we don’t have to live our lives in such a way that our memories are characterized by regret. Explain that Hebrews 12:1 talks about running the race of life with perseverance as followers of Christ. Then share that Hebrews 12:2 gives us an indispensable key for running the race: “Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus…”
Bible Study
Explain that the Hebrew Christians were suffering persecution from their fellow Jews. These early believers had received Jesus Christ and were being cut off from their families and communities as a result. Many were being threatened and intimidated by the Jewish religious authorities for “abandoning” their national religion in favor of a relationship with Jesus. No wonder the author of Hebrews spends so much time encouraging them to persevere and not turn back to their obsolete sacrifices and

The chorus of the song “Fix My Eyes” might have been a great encouragement to these early believers as it is to us. From the perspective of looking back on one’s life and the mistakes this person has made, the lyrics state: Here’s what I’d do differently. I’d love like I’m not scared / Give when it’s not fair / Live life for another / Take time for a brother / Fight for the weak ones / Speak out for freedom / Find faith in the battle / Stand tall but above it all / Fix my eyes on You Explain that all of those sentiments ultimately encompass the two commands Jesus gave His disciples. According to John the Apostle, “… this is His command: to believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as He commanded us.” (1 John 3:23) According to Jesus’ closest earthly friend, the two commands that encompass the Christian life are to believe (walk by faith) and love (in tangible ways). Have students split into small groups if desired, and discuss the thoughts and questions in the Thinking It Through section of the student handout. • Try to put yourself in the shoes of those early Jewish Christians. Your family has abandoned you because of your faith. The government watch-

How does keeping your eyes “fixed on Jesus” enable you to persevere? • Applying this “fix your eyes” concept to modern-day life, what are the things God calls a teenager to persevere through? What does “fix your eyes” on Jesus look like in the dayto-day routines? At school? At home? In the community? • Hebrews 12:1-3 links our ability to walk in victory directly to the extent that we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and take note of “…Him who endured such opposition from sinful men…” In what ways, other than His trial and crucifixion, did Jesus have to endure opposition from sinful men? Do you truly believe that Jesus can empathize with your struggles? Do you believe that He has truly “walked in your shoes?” Explain…
Wrap Up
Read Hebrews 4:14-16 as a group. What does the fact that we can “approach God’s throne of grace with confidence” mean to you? How exactly does He “extend mercy and grace to help us in our time of need”? Why are “keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus” and “approaching Him with confidence” so clearly joined together as an encouragement to persevere and follow Him?

Looking back at your life so far, is there anything you would do differently if you had the chance to do it over again? How might things have been different if your eyes had been “fixed on Jesus”?

God’s Presence
Objective
Students will think deeply about the assurance of God’s presence. Students face messages from many untrustworthy sources and need to grow in their trust of God’s ever-present help and healing power.
Warm Up
Beforehand, have a panel of three leaders (students, adults, or both) decide on some bizarre details from their lives that would be hard to deem true or false. Have the panel on stage while you call a student contestant up for round one. For each round, two of the leaders will say something that is not true about themselves, while one leader will say something that is true, but difficult to believe. For example, leader #1 may say, “I have the same birthday as Taylor Swift.” Leader #2 might say, “I was born on the day JFK was assassinated.” And the third might say, “I am deathly allergic to fire ants.” As long as one of the statements is true and the others are false, it’s gameon as your contestants get one chance each to guess which one is true. Be ready to hand out prizes (maybe YLO music?) to the winner of each round.
Have the students explain how they tried to discern who was telling the truth. What non-verbal cues did they look for? How strongly did “feelings” or “intuition” play a role? Then say, “In real life, there are important issues for which we need truthful answers and authentic experiences. The greatest reassurance possible is to know that God’s presence is with us moment by moment. How can we experience daily the assurance that God’s presence is with us?” Allow students to respond.
The Video
Explain that in this video a group of musicians take the stage in an upscale urban restaurant, where everyone is trying hard to impress, but are actually pretty bored. As the band plays, the energy in the room increases until people are dancing, laughing, and having a great time. That’s the way God’s presence should work. Christians, as God’s representatives, should breathe life into their circumstances. Show the video.
Transition
Say, “Tobymac says, There’s at least a million reasons / I’m still standing here believin’ / You’re my comfort, You’re my healin’ / This I know. He goes on to use the wind as an example of why He trusts in God’s presence and power.

Bible Study
Explain that the Bible indicates that we consist of three basic elements: body, soul, and spirit. (Mark 12:30; 1 Thessalonians 5:23; Hebrews 4:12). Explain that while the physical body is obvious, the spirit and soul are more difficult to differentiate. Our “spirit” is the word pneuma (pronounced “newma”)—the moment we trusted Christ to save us from sin, His Holy Spirit (pneuma) united with ours and our human spirit is forever secure and in union with Him. But our souls (psuche, from which we get the word “psychology”) consist basically of our mind, will, and emotion. Explain that the playground of our souls is where we interpret and experience reality, and where we need to grow. Explain that when Tobymac emphasizes the importance of “feeling” God in his emotions, he is not suggesting that some superficial sensation is what anchors his faith. But, he is emphasizing the need to know and experience God holistically—as our entire being is captivated by the power of His loving character and commitment to us—and that includes our feelings and emotions. Say, “Our story today is the story of Jesus walking on the water. It’s a famous story about fear, faith, and feelings.” (For concise background info and helpful details to assist in bringing life to the story, consult gotquestions.
VALLEY CHURCH VACAVILLE, CALIFORNIA JWHITE@VALLEYCHURCH.COM
After a few minutes teaching the passage(s), direct students to the “Thinking It Through” section of their Student Guide. Have them work through these questions. When they are finished, ask for volunteers to share their responses. • Have you ever been told to “follow your heart” or “trust your feelings”? Would you consider that good advice or not? Explain. • How do our minds (thoughts), emotions (feelings), and will (choices) work together or affect each other? • The disciples seem to journey from a state of fear to a place of faith, then they experience a change of feelings. Can you identify with the disciples in this moment? Share about that from a specific example in your experience.
Wrap Up
Read Romans 12:1-2 as a group. Explain that many people are directed almost entirely by their feelings. Emotions are a wonderful gift from God, and He wants His love to radically impact our emotions so that we do feel His presence as part of our transforming journey with Him. How does the renewing of the mind allow us to feel the Lord’s presence more legitimately and consistently?

We cannot literally see the blowing of the wind, but we can definitely feel and see the effects of the wind upon the world around us. Are there similarities with God?

Take notes as your leader shares from the famous story of Jesus walking on the water. (Matthew 14:22-36, Mark 6:45-56; John 6:16-21)

Patriotism
Objective
Students will explore patriotism and identify how they can have an impact on the condition of our nation.
Warm Up
Before the session, make a set of index cards each with the name of a State in the U.S. on it. Also make a corresponding set of cards with the names of the capitol cities of those States.
Begin by handing each student an index card with the instruction to find the person with the matching State or capitol. Have each pair work together to write a definition of the word “patriot” on the back of one of the cards. When they’ve finished, have each pair read their definition and then discuss the similarities and differences of the different definitions. You may add that Webster defines it as: “a person who loves and strongly supports or fights for his or her country” and gives the word “loyalist” as a synonym. Now shift and discuss whether or not it is patriotic to criticize or protest wrongs that you see in the country you love.
Point out that this song by Lecrae speaks of America from three different perspectives. None of the three are very positive pictures, but they challenge us to think about solutions.
The Video
Get your students into three groups. Each group will focus on one of the three perspectives on America represented in the video: born here, war veteran, hopeful immigrant. Direct them to use the Student Guide section called “The Good, the Bad… and the Solution” to record what they hear the song saying about America from that person’s perspective, both good and bad, plus any solutions to the bad either from the lyrics or ideas from the students in their group. Give the groups a few minutes to compare notes and discuss after the video is over and then have each group share with the others.

Transition
Is true patriotism blind to the shortcomings of your country or painfully aware and actively seeking to point people to solutions? We can find in the Bible solutions for every problem. Lecrae is trying to communicate here that the difficulty comes at the point of being heard and following through.
Bible Study
Assign a student to read each of the following verses aloud for the group. If you have access to a presentation technology, you might want to project them on a screen (or you could have them written on large tear sheets and hang them on the wall), as each one is read. Psalm 33:12 Proverbs 14:34 2 Chronicles 7:14 Jeremiah 18:7-10 After each verse is read, lead in a discussion of what solutions it offers for the struggles America is facing.

Wrap Up
Like many Americans, you may be thinking, “What can I do? I’m just one person – and I’m a teenager!” Have your students take a couple of minutes to think about what has been discussed and then list two or three things that they can do as individuals to contribute to the good of America, as well as one or two things that they might be able to do as a group or as a generation. Be sure that prayer and confession are brought into play during this part.

God’s Creation
Objective
In this session we will look at God’s creation and our place in it.
Warm Up
Have your students go out into nature and select things like leaves, flowers, twigs, etc. Then bring these things back into your meeting space. Using magnifying glasses, or anything else you can come up with, have them look at the minute details that God put into even these small parts of creation. If getting out into nature is not possible, go to your favorite image search site and look up details in nature. If your group is artistic, you might consider having them create images that show these details. Share your observations together.
Transition
God’s creation is incredible. Seeing the details in these small parts of creation is just the tip of the iceberg. Imagine the precision it takes to keep our bodies working. Billions of cells work in constant rhythm, just to keep us alive. Now take that to a global scale, a universal scale. The amazing amount of design required to make all these things work and live and grow screams evidence of a Creator. The fingerprints of God are all over His creation.
The Video
In the song “Dreams” by King’s Kaleidoscope, the songwriter sings about seeing God in His dreams. He sees God in all the aspects of His creation, and the singer comes to one conclusion: he is loved. God made all of this earth to sustain us and care for us because He loves us. As you watch this visually stimulating video, have your students note images that stand out to them.

Transition

Bible Study
In our Bible study for today, we’ll begin by looking at the Creation account from Genesis 1. For everything He created up until the middle of day six, God spoke things into existence. At the end of days three through five, as well as after the creation of the animals on day six, God looks at what He made and said it was good. When He creates humanity, the wording shifts. God says what He made was very good. We will then move to verse 7 of chapter 2 and look briefly at the difference between how God created humanity and how He made everything else. This verse seems to imply that God took a more hands-on approach when He created humanity and breathed His Spirit into us. Finally, we will look at Romans 1:20 which tells us that we can see the evidence of God in His creation.

Romans 8:14-17 tells us that we are beloved children of God and heirs of creation. As heirs, all of creation that is His will one day be ours. Theme God’s Love
Objective
Students will be encouraged to live in response to God’s love.
Warm Up
Supply each student with pencils, craft supplies (glue, markers, magazine clippings, etc.), and paper. Allow time for the students to be creative. Have them write, draw, and create whatever they want to answer the question, “How do you know when you’re loved?” Play the song as students work.
Transition
When time is up, have the students share their creations with the rest of the group.
The Video
Feeling loved is important, right? When we feel loved, we feel that life matters. There’s a sense of freedom in knowing we’re loved by those around us. Hawk Nelson tackles this issue in their latest song, “Live Like You’re Loved.” Take a look at their video.
Transition Discuss:
• What do you think the phrase “live like you’re loved” means? • When you know you’re loved, how do you feel?
Read through these Scriptures, and discuss the questions. Ephesians 2:1-10
• What does being “dead in your transgressions” mean? • What is the result of this? What do we crave? • How do we find freedom from these desires? How are we “saved”? • What do you think being “saved by grace” means? • Where will this freedom, this grace, lead us? • Are God’s grace and God’s love the same thing? • How does knowing you are God’s handiwork make you feel? • How are we to respond? Colossians 2:6-7 • How are we to respond to God’s grace and love? • What ways can you continue to be strengthened in faith? • What does being “overflowing with thankfulness” mean? • How can you actively show your gratitude to God?

When you know you’re loved, how do you feel? Maybe you just learned that your crush likes you back—you get excited right? Maybe you get a giddy feeling in the pit of your stomach. Do you get the same feeling when you consider God’s love for you? Do you respond in the same way? Because of God’s love we are made free! This freedom in God’s love is exactly what Hawk Nelson sings about in their song. There’s a sense of joy, an energy released when we know God takes us just as we are, without exceptions. This energy, this giddiness, should be apparent in our lives every day! Can people look at your life and know you’re loved by God? If not, what needs to change?

Have the groups turn to 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. Explain that Paul is teaching that sexual sins go against what God has for us, and that we need to set aside our own desires to bring glory to God. The principle of setting aside our own desires to bring glory to God applies to all areas of our lives. Have them read this passage together and discuss these questions:
Theme
Self Image; Uniqueness
Objective
Students will learn that God has made us each in His image, yet we are all unique. We might feel that we need to be like others, but God wants us to be ourselves and use what He has given us to bring glory to Himself.
Warm Up
Find Someone Who – Hand out the Student Guides. Use the chart with 25 boxes listing varying characteristics. Each box has room for a signature. Students will be given five minutes to go around the room and have others who are different than they are to sign their charts. For example, one box says to find someone who has “different color hair than you.” The winner is either the first person to have names in all of their boxes, or the person to have the most boxes signed when the time is up. Students can only sign another person’s paper once. Give a prize (like a CD from interlínc) to the person with the most names.
Explain that we all compare ourselves to others. There’s something inside each of us that pushes us to compare ourselves. Often, this leads to dissatisfaction with who we are; hence, we don’t feel as though we are good enough. Other times we let others’ thoughts and comments about us dictate how we view ourselves. We’re going to look at a music video where Skrip doesn’t worry about how others view him. Watch and listen to find what it is that dictates what he does and how he thinks about himself.
Show the “When the Beat Drop” video.
Divide into groups of three. As you read 1 Corinthians 1:18-31 aloud, have the students write down phrases that stick out to them. After a few minutes, have some groups share their findings with the rest.
• How is your body not your own?
Transition Discuss:
• What does Paul mean that we have been bought with a price? Why does this matter?
• What did you catch from this song that is his source of identity?
• What is one thing that makes you unique?
• In the video, we noticed that there was a saying that kept coming up: “Renegades never die” – the title of Skrip’s album. What do you think he means by this? • How does this relate to the phrase, “All this time they’ve been looking at me like I’m out [of] my mind”?

Have the groups of three close with a time of writing down unique qualities about each other, or characteristics that they like about the other person. Share a personal story about something unique about yourself that God has used for His glory.
Read Ephesians 2:10 to the group. Say something like, “God has handcrafted you to bring Him glory. He loves that you are different from everyone else. You don’t need to try to be like anyone else—just be the person God has made you.” You might need to remind students that sin is never okay and that in our struggle to be who God has made us to be, sin wants to wreck us. Pray for the students to understand how to be confident in the person God created and to choose to live a holy life because Christ died for them. Then, close in prayer.

Jamie’s song describes people going through some tough challenges, but who continue to fight through their situations. Let’s take a look at some verses and discuss how they relate to the song and message.” Have students read the following verses and fill out their “Fighter” section on their Student Guides, and discuss the questions as well as their answers. 1 Corinthians 9:24; 2 Timothy 1:7 • What does these verses mean? • Do you think everyone has different challenges that tend to make him or her fearful? Give an example. • How does knowing that God has given us a spirit of power make a difference in how we respond to the messiness and challenges in our lives? One of the important things Jamie Grace’s “Fighter” brings to light is the reality that how we respond to challenges and difficulties inspires others. A Negative Attitude Can Be Dangerous (Numbers 13) What can we learn from this example of the twelve spies of Israel? • Ten did not believe they could take the land of Canaan (v. 31). • Their negative attitude discouraged the rest of Israel (v. 13:32-14:4; cf. 32:7-9). • It led to Israel complaining and rebelling against God (Deuteronomy 1:26-28).
• We stop trying to do what God wants us to do. • We discourage those around us. • We fail to reach the goals God has placed before us. A Positive Attitude Is Amazing (Nehemiah 4) What can we learn from this example from Israel? • The people worked together (v. 6). • It helped them overcome ridicule by their enemies (v. 1-3). • It led to the rebuilding of the walls (cf. Nehemiah 6:15). What happens when we have a positive attitude? • We continue to believe in God and our ability to serve Him. • We keep trying to do what God wants us to do.
• It prompted them not to believe in God (Deuteronomy 1:29-33).
• We encourage those around us, and overcome those who would discourage us.
• It resulted in many dying in the wilderness (Numbers 14:26-38).

Theme God’s Grace
Objective
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the concept of “spiritual breathing” by participating in a confession and prayer exercise.
Warm Up
The Guinness World Record for holding one’s breath was set in 2012 by Dr. Stig Severinsen who held his breath under water for 22 minutes. How long do you think YOU can go? Enlist three or four students who think they can hold their breath the longest and have them sit at the front of the room to compete and begin on your signal. [NOTE: Be sure to stop them if they start to get dizzy!] Have a small prize for the winner. After presenting the prize, ask the rest of the group if any of them who were not at the front tried to hold their breath too. Ask how long it took before they felt the urge to exhale. Why do we feel that? Because the air in our lungs quickly gives up its oxygen, what’s left is carbon dioxide, a poisonous gas.
Transition
Breathing is essential to life. This is a fact that we’re all aware of, but we don’t tend to think about it until there is some reason—having an asthma attack, getting the breath knocked out of us playing a game, or swimming underwater. This song by Plumb, inspired by a sermon at her home church, is all about “spiritual breathing” which is just as crucial to spiritual life as physical breathing is to physical life.

Team 1 will explore Scriptures that show the idea of “exhaling” as confession of sin. Have students read Psalm 66:18-19; Psalm 32:1-5; Psalm 51:9-10; 1 John 1:8-10. They will then discuss how being forgiven feels when you have done something to hurt someone. Team 2 will explore Scriptures that show the idea of “exhaling” as proclaiming the message of grace. Have students read Psalm 51:10-13; 1 Peter 2:9; Acts 4:32-33; 1 John 5:9-11. Then, they will discuss what they would do if they just found out that they have been given a $75,000 college fund.

Wrap Up
Lead your students in an exercise in “spiritual breathing.” You might want to dim the lights in the room and then ask students to close their eyes and pretend that they are alone with God. Instruct them to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal specific sins. As they become aware of their sinful actions, have them ask God for forgiveness and grace and then breathe out forcefully. As they breathe in, tell them to think of the air they’re taking in as a fresh breath of His love and grace. Give them a few minutes to repeat this as the Holy Spirit reveals sins. You might want to play the song during this exercise. When the exercise seems to be winding down, ask students to think of people they know who need to know about this wonderful gift from God. Invite them to say out loud the first name of each person God is bringing to their mind. When this ends, lead in a brief prayer of thanks for the gift of Spiritual breathing, and pray for each student to find an opportunity to exhale the message of grace to the persons they mentioned.

Theme Friendship
Objective
Students will learn about the importance of chosing the proper friends. They will become wary of getting involved with the wrong type of friends, which can result in leading them in the wrong direction.
Warm Up
Gather your students and discuss these questions:
• How would you describe the kind of friends do you have?
The Video
Hand out the Student Guides and explain that an up-and-coming urban music duo from Florida—called Social Club—has a song about the subject of friends and the effect they have on us. The song is called “Bad Advice.” Encourage your students to pay attention to what the guys are trying to communicate as they watch the video.
Transition Discuss:
• How does social networking work between you and your friends?
• What makes a person a so-called “good” friend?
• Do you understand the deception of listening to the wrong crowd, and how it sends you in the wrong direction?
• Do you have guidelines or standards for the friends that you make?
• What are the characteristics of deceptive, evil, or corrupt friends?
• They say that you can tell what a person is like by the kinds of friends that he or she has. If that were true, how would someone describe you just by knowing your friends?
• What is on your list of standards (what shouldn’t be ignored) for choosing friends?
© 2015 INTERLINC • INTERLINC-ONLINE.COM • 800.725.3300
Let’s take a look at what God has to say about friendships, their influence on us, the standards we should have, and how to respond to “bad advice.”
Be Careful About Who You Listen To (1 Corinthians 5:11; 1 Timothy 4:1-2; 2 Thessalonians 2:3; 2 Peter 3:17; 1 John 4:1) The Bible is clear that there are people who want to pull you away from your faith. These people may even claim to follow Jesus. So, be on your guard. Know your stuff. And watch out for those that would drag you down. Don’t Let Sin Hinder You (Hebrews 12:1) This verse is so right when it says that sin “so easily entangles” us and keeps us from experiencing the best for which God has made us. For some reason, though, sin is a lot easier to get entangled in when the people around us are doing it too. So, choose carefully with whom you spend your time! Don’t Hang Around – LEAVE! (1 Corinthians 6:18; 10:14; 2 Timothy 2:22) The hardest thing to do is to resist sin when everyone around you is engaged in it. The only escape is to escape. Leave. Run away. Flee. Get out of the situation!

Discuss these questions with your students to get them thinking along the lines of the Bible study.
• What do you think of your body? • What abuse have you put your body through? • Have you ever thought about how you were individually designed and created? • Do our bodies matter?
The Video
Have the students pay attention to the words as they watch the “Cathedrals” lyric video from Tenth Avenue North.
Transition
One of the most mind boggling things is to realize that there are roughly Seven BILLION people on this planet. SEVEN BILLION. That means you are a mere .00000001% of the population—or, to put it another way, you are a mere ten-millionth of a percent of the world’s population. That is ridiculous! What a way to feel small, huh?
You know what God said about that? In Psalm 139:13-14 we read, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” We were each individually designed and created. You and your .00000001% were designed and created on purpose, not by accident. But that’s not the end of the conversation; God had more planned for you and I. He sent His Son, Jesus, to live among us and rearrange how everyone viewed the Law and a relationship with God; then, to complete the deal, He experienced a gruesome death on a cross, and rose again a couple days later. Paul went on to say in his first letter to Corinth, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) Our bodies are Cathedrals, bought at a very high price—that’s why Paul instructs us to honor them!

Think about what made you decide to follow Jesus. Was it a friend, your family? Maybe it was something indecipherable, a feeling you had inside that made you follow Jesus. Are there things you’re giving up to follow Jesus? Maybe you don’t have to quit your job to follow Jesus today. Maybe it doesn’t seem like you’re giving up anything at all– but the very idea of being a disciple is, in fact, a sacrifice. As we make the decision to follow Jesus, we give Him our minds, our hearts, our livelihoods. All of a sudden, everything we do is done with Christ in mind. Objective
Students will understand that in their time of need they can run to Christ. He is always there for them.
Warm Up
Go to youtube.com/watch?v=E_0Ta_ DIWuU (this is a clip from “Friends” that shows Phoebe’s crazy running style) and show the video to your group. After this, take the kids somewhere they are free to run crazy. Have two people be the judges, see what kids can run most freely and crazily. Make sure you stress you want crazy, free, fun running! Pick the kid who runs most crazily and give them a prize.
Transition
Ask the kids how they felt running crazy—were they free? Was it fun? Did running that way take more courage than the way they normally run? Do they think they could run in public like that? Why or why not?
The Video
Tell the students they are going to watch a lyric video of Ginny Owens’ song called “No Borders.” Show the video.
Transition
Hand out the Student Guides and have the kids fill in the blanks of the chorus. Here are the answers: borders, wonder, mystery, run, boundaries, love.
Bible Study
Ask, “Have you ever felt as though you have hidden behind your comfort zone? Maybe you have borders and boundaries set in place so that you will not behave in a way that makes people look at you, or maybe you have borders and boundaries up that keep you from being the person God called you to be.” Let’s see what the Bible has to say about this subject. 2 Samuel 6:12-22 – David danced before the Lord. • Why do you think Michal rebuked David for his dancing and rejoicing? (She felt it was in very poor taste since he was the king. SHE was ashamed of his behavior.) • What did David tell her? (I will celebrate before the Lord) • David said that he would be humiliated in his own eyes, and he would become “even more undignified than this.” Proverbs 3:26 – “For the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught.” Deuteronomy 31:6 – “Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the Lord your God is the one who goes with you He will not fail you or forsake you.”

Theme Humility
Objective
This Bible study will encourage students to have the same attitude that Jesus did, who humbled Himself and became a servant to others, and to practice humility by giving God the glory as part of their daily routine.
Warm Up
If possible, in the week before you teach this lesson, challenge the students to post on their social media accounts text, images, or verses that exemplify their love for God – and nothing about themselves!
Transition
Prior to playing the video, ask the students to report on any of their positive post(s) on their social media accounts that are God glorifying.
The Video
By this time the students should be thinking along the lines of the theme of this session, and you can use the video to reinforce that direction, or to raise additional questions about the topic. A video used in this way can be a strong “hook” on which to hang the truth of Scripture.
Transition
After viewing the video and reading post(s) from various social media accounts, ask: “How can you glorify God in your daily life?”
Bible Study
Use these key points and questions to teach from Philippians 2:5-11. Believers are united with Christ, and should have the same attitude of humility that Jesus showed. (v.5).
• How can you make your own attitude like the attitude of Christ? Christ did not use His equal identity with God for His own personal gain or achievement (v. 6); rather, He removed Himself from heaven to take His place among His creation as one of us (v. 7). Although He set aside the rights and privileges of being God, He remained God. • What can you share with others about this concept? Christ’s humility did not stop at becoming human; He continued His obedience by becoming a servant (v. 7) willing even to die on the cross like a common criminal (v. 8). • Is this the image you think of when you hear the word “humble”? • Do you consider this an act of glorifying God?

The Father exalted Him for his humility! He was given the name above all names (v. 9)! God was pleased with the humble spirit and obedience that Christ displayed. One day, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess! • What will happen as a result of your obedience and humility?

Philippians 2:5-7
What does having the “same attitude as Christ” mean to you?
• How can you make your own attitude like the attitude of Christ?
While you’re hanging out, take time to share with one another:
Believers are united with Christ, and should have the same attitude of humility that Jesus showed. (v.5).
How can a person be humble in his or her day-today activities?
Christ did not use His equal identity with God for His own personal gain or achievement (v. 6); rather, He removed Himself from heaven to take His place among His creation as one of us (v. 7). Although He set aside the rights and privileges of being God, He remained God. • What can you share with others about this concept?
Philippians 2:8-11
Christ’s humility did not stop at becoming human; He continued His obedience by becoming a servant (v. 7) willing even to die on the cross like a common criminal (v. 8).
• Is this the image you think of when you hear the word “humble”? Do you consider this an act of glorifying God?
The Father exalted Him for his humility! He was given the name above all names (v. 9). God was pleased with the humble spirit and obedience that Christ displayed. It was His secret ambition to please the Father, Lord God. • How can you please the Lord with your daily routine?
One day, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess! • What will happen as a result of your obedience and humility?
We want to have the same attitude that Jesus did; He humbled Himself and became a servant to others. As a result of His humility, the Father highly exalted Him. By being humble in His obedience, Christ gave God all the glory.

Hold up a shoe and have the students describe what they think is beautiful about it. You may want to point out that it has a pretty design, or beautiful colors, or a cool style. Ask, “Why are there so many types and styles of shoes?” The answer is that people want beautiful feet. Nobody goes out and buys the ugliest shoes they can find! No, they buy the shoes they find most beautiful.
Have the group vote on the most beautiful drawing of a shoe. Discuss:
• What message did the video seem to have? • What are some of the lyrics that stood out to you?
Have one student read Isaiah 52:6-7 and another read Romans 10:14-15. Discuss:
Before we share the good news, we need to help people understand why it is good news and why it matters to them. Have a student read Romans 3:23. Discuss: • What is sin? (Allow time for students to write their own definition on their handout). • How does James 4:17 reflect our definition of sin? Have students list the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:2-17) Ask, “Have you broken any of the Ten Commandments?” Have a student read Romans 6:23. Transition
Say, “Riverbank requires a combination of listening and reacting that becomes increasingly difficult with increased game speed. Understanding and remembering who you are in Christ can be challenging too, especially as life flies by faster and faster. Let’s watch this video of ‘Our Father Has Won’ by WorshipMOB.”

Read 2 Corinthians 5:17 to the group, and then say something like: “Christians want to please God, to know Him more, and to serve Him. As a person stays faithful to God, the old ways of following the world have been put to death and the new ways of following Christ are here to stay. Sure, there will be setbacks, mistakes, and sins, but the blood of Jesus has already covered those. As the song title states, ‘Our Father Has Won’!” Prepare to play the video again. Objective
We live in a world where identifying our enemies is not hard. These may be geographical enemies, or they may be in our own neighborhood, classroom, or workplace. Students will identify the characteristics of one who loves his or her enemies and develop strategies of forgiveness and love for those enemies.
Warm Up
Hand out the Student Guides and give your group five minutes to finish the section, “The Enemy List.” When everyone has finished, have the students present their lists. Plan to make a master list on a whiteboard or newsprint. Use these questions to follow-up the time:
• What makes an enemy an “enemy”? • In what ways do we make enemies even bigger enemies?
Transition
Say something like, “Identifying enemies in our world is easy. We hear about enemies in our news, through our friends, and from our family. Today, we want to identify those enemies, and more important, define the character of one who loves an enemy. Then we will strategize how we do this.”
The Video
Let your group know the song being played is by “The Brilliance.” Check out more information on this song and the artist at the listed website. Encourage your students to complete the “Key Points” exercise while they listen to the song. When the video has finished, have different group members share their responses. Follow-up with these questions: • “Re-framing” is when we look at one thing and make it into another, which helps us to respond in a healthier manner. How does the writer of this song re-frame his enemy? • What is meant by “Forgiveness is the garment of our courage”? • Why is courage required to make peace? • We are called to “open up our eyes” and see what? • What are the wounds binding humankind now? List a few of them.
© 2015 INTERLINC • INTERLINC-ONLINE.COM • 800.725.3300
Say something like, “It does take courage to forgive and love people as God would. Jesus gives us very challenging words in Matthew 5:43-48. We are going to study them and get a picture of the person who loves all of God’s people.” Invite your youth to open their Bibles to Matthew 5:43-48 and also to the section, “Enemies as Neighbors” found in their Student Guides. Have one person in your group read this passage and then give each student up to ten minutes to work on the exercise before coming back together. Work through each of the questions and ask the students to share their discoveries. Follow up the exercise with these questions:
• Why was Jesus’ call for us to love our enemies so radical? • What did He mean by “persecute”? • In what ways are we persecuted? • Why is knowing that God treats everyone the same important (v.45)? • “Perfect” in the Greek means “complete.” How does this change your understanding of the last verse? • What would be your short list of traits characterizing the person who loves his or her enemies?
FREE METHODIST CHURCH SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA DRANCK@FMCSB.ORG
Finish this time together by having your youth take a little solo time to recognize the enemies in their lives. Challenge them to first pray for that person or group of people and then to ask God to give them one step to begin loving their enemy. Close the time by praying for the group as they courageously step out to love the unloveable.

Fear
Objective
Students will consider what causes them to experience fear, and will discover truths from the Bible that will help them overcome fear.
Warm Up
Not long ago there were videos circulating online with instructions to turn up your speaker volume and look closely for something in the video. After about 30 seconds a scary looking face would pop up with a loud scream. If you have access to one of those, show it to your group. If not, ask if any of them ever fell for it. Discuss how the video made them feel. Brainstorm the question, “What are you afraid of?” You might feed the discussion by mentioning something that scared you recently, and then encourage them to go beyond the “snakes and spiders” issues to life-challenges like relationships and the future. Be sure to write down the list of what causes the kids to feel afraid. You’ll need that list later.
Announce that a recent study revealed that the thing feared most by Americans is speaking in public. Death came in second. Ask your students if they would agree with that. Explain that in this song, Lecrae is very honest and transparent about his fears. Point out that not many people are willing to be that vulnerable to the public.
The Video
As students watch this video, have them watch and listen for the fears that Lecrae is struggling with. NOTE: Be sure to let the video run past what appears to be the end so that your students can read Psalm 23. After the video, ask the students to share what they heard. With each fear identified in the video, ask whether they have any similar fears. You should try to be open about fears with which you struggle as well. In the hook, Lecrae mentions, “fingers pointed at me.” Ask students what they think he means by that.
Transition
Explain that everyone struggles with insecurities and fears. However, Christ’s followers don’t have to be held in fear’s grip. There are powerful promises in the Word of God that can make a huge difference in how we experience life.
© 2015 INTERLINC • INTERLINC-ONLINE.COM • 800.725.3300
Instruct your students to get in groups of three or four. Give the group about five minutes to work through Psalm 23 and identify promises that could help us deal with our fears.
After they’ve finished that, have groups share what they found. Be sure to emphasize the job description of a shepherd: leading, protecting, rescuing, and feeding. Have a volunteer read Joshua 1:9 aloud. Explain that Joshua was just taking over leadership of Israel from Moses. That was a huge task—he was to lead them against some powerful enemies possessing the land God had promised to the Israelites. Ask the students to identify the reason Joshua was told not to be terrified. Have another student read Hebrews 2:14-15 aloud. These two little verses contain a huge promise: freedom from the fear of death!
FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH DALLAS, TEXAS DAVEFELTS@YMAIL.COM
Review the brainstorm list of fears that you created earlier, and instruct the students to pick out their top three or four fears. Then, help the students to identify a promise from the Bible study that they can apply to that fear in order to experience victory. Close in prayer.

Authenticity
Students will learn how being transparent in their struggles is an important part of growing in their faith and community in Christ.
Warm Up
Real or Fake? – For this game, you will have to prepare by looking up pictures of real and fake items. You can use people (wax vs. real), fruit, items, paintings, dollar bills, etc. Put together a slideshow with a fake and real picture of the same item side-by-side. Have students guess which one is real/fake. You can make teams (side vs. side, girls vs. boys, etc).
Transition
How difficult was it to figure out which person/object was real and which was fake?
Play the lyric video.
Take a few minutes to have the students answer the questions from their “Good, Bad, Ugly” section on their Student Guide, and then have the students report what they wrote as their answers.
Bible Study
Say something like “Lecrae reveals some pretty heavy stuff to his audience in this song. Talking about some of the struggles and pain that we have been through or are going through can be very difficult. Lecrae helps us to remember that we should not be ashamed of (or hide) our past and current struggles, and if we admit them it will help us be authentic in our walk. Confession is an essential part of our healing process.” Go over the following verses with the group and have students answer the questions in their “Get Real” section. Isaiah 64:6 – “We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags…”

Romans 8:1-2 – “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the spirit who gives life has set you free.”
• Why do you think people conceal their sins, even ones in the past?
• Why (or why not) do you think we should be actively seeking God’s approval?
Explain that we are all tainted with sin—it shows up in our everyday lives. Lecrae talks about being set free from the prison of sin and that we are not defined by our past. The ONLY key that can set us free from sin is Jesus Christ. Does that mean we become perfect and never fall into temptation and sin after receiving the “key”? Absolutely not, but if we confess and turn from the sins that pull us down, He is faithful to uphold us.
• Why (or why not) is confessing our sin to other Christ-followers difficult?
2 Timothy 2:15 – “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” James 5:16 – “Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”
• Why is being transparent and authentic in our faith important?
Wrap Up
Lecrae understands that when we learn from our past sins and use them as tools to heal and help others (as well as ourselves), we recognize our freedom in Christ has covered the areas in which we have failed. When we are transparent and authentic in our faith, we are able to show others that they are not alone in the struggle. As Romans 8 says, we are not condemned because we are free in Jesus Christ, no matter what we have done. Have students fill out their “Freedom” section. End in prayer.

They do this by coming up with words that they can guess, but the creator can’t. Say the creator’s word is “apple.” The creator says his word starts with the letter “a.” The guessers try to think of words that also start with the letter “a.” One of the guessers thinks of the word “apathy” and asks, “Is this is a symptom of depression?” If the word creator can come up with a word that fits the clue, say “apathy,” they say “It’s not apathy,” and the guessers have to think of another clue. Trust
Objective
Students will be encouraged to put their trust in Christ for every-day life activities. They will discover that at the moment they begin to doubt their faith, they become a “backseat driver” – and who wants to be one of those?
Warm Up
As the students are arriving and while the song is playing have the students answer the following questions:
• Do you usually go “your way” or Yahweh’s way?
We exhibit trust without even thinking. We trust that a car will move when we press the accelerator. We trust that the food we order will be correct when we leave the drive-thru. We trust that our friends are going to be with us no matter what takes place. Why don’t we trust Christ in all our situations?
The Video
Have students watch and listen carefully to the lyric video. Encourage them to pay close attention to any concepts or ideas that jump out at them. Listen to the words regarding trust and remembering that God is in control.
• What typically happens when you try to navigate your own life? • What experiences have you had when you allowed Christ to be the navigator of your life? • Why do people think that they don’t need the Lord’s involvement?
Develop an “I can, because of Christ” approach. (2 Corinthians 5:6-8) We walk by faith, not by sight.
In every situation, seek your desires and accept whatever He allows. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
• Describe what being confident means to you.
• Easy to say, but is this easy to do? Can you really let go and let the Lord “drive”?
• How is that different from being confident with Christ? • When was the last time you tried to drive a car while wearing a blindfold? Come on—you are a great driver! Surely you have faith that you would be fine driving blindfolded, right? How do you explain to others that a walk with Christ is based on faith? Submission and trust are needed for complete dependence on the Lord. (John 20:26-27) • Talk about a moment of trust! (And, for that matter, a moment of submission as well.) While you may not be able to literally place your finger in the nail hole of the Savior – how might you be able to have that sensation of confirmed faith today? • Recall a time when you had that type of “trust” moment with Christ. Take some time to share it with someone.

LOVE FEELS LIKE
DAVID GANTT
Theme
Transition
The story of the Good Samaritan shows this concept in action. You have a man who is of mixed ethnicity that is typically shunned by society but who is the hero of the story. He becomes the example of loving others. You have two other guys who are very religious and important, walk right by a wounded man. The societal outcast stops to help. That’s love.
Wrap Up
Love; Sacrificial
Objective
Students will understand that there is more to loving someone than just “caring” for them or saying that they love them. Real love requires action!
Warm Up
Sit Down If… – Have the whole group stand up. Randomly call out things that might apply to the students and tell them to sit down if the comment applies to them. (i.e. “Sit down if you have ever been punched in the face.”) Play this until one person remains and that person is the winner. Have everyone stand back up and say, “Sit down if you have ever been in love.” Chances are almost everyone will sit down. Use this to lead into the lesson.
Ask the following:
• What is your definition of love? • What does being “in love” mean? • How does a person show love to another person? • What does having someone not love you feel like? Then say, “Today’s lesson takes love from just words and a feeling and puts action behind it and makes it something that really means something.”
Bible Study
For someone who has been beaten down in life to step up and help others in their time of need shows what loving always, loving regardless, acts like. But, what does that feel like? This type of love is played out in a few different ways. You feel humility. You have to get beyond your comfort zone to make the move to love others. You also feel the sacrifice.
Luke 10:25-37 – Explain that feeling loved is easily described; but, do we know what it really feels like to love? We get lost in a definition of love that Loving others requires an investpoints to a feeling of care or a feeling of affection, and we lose the verb-ness ment of time, energy, resources, etc. The Samaritan in the story gave his of love. In John 13:34, Jesus said that we should love one another as He has loved us. This command to love requires us to act in the same manner that He acted in love for us. He gave of Himself. He sacrificed His time. He emotionally invested in us. He died for us. If we will start really loving people and living out the 90° Rule, we need to put our words and feelings into real action that makes a difference. Love is big! It takes a big commitment to love as Christ did. It may take us through some messy times, it may stretch us thin, it may leave us tired and worn out—but it’s worth it. Who do you feel God calling you to love?

LOVE FEELS LIKE
LOVE; SACRIFICIAL
Think About It
Do you think the story would have changed if the Samaritan encountered the wounded man and discovered that he was a person who had hurt or bullied him because of the Samaritan’s ethnicity?
What do you think would have changed?
Wrap Up
In John 13:34, Jesus said that we should love one another as He has loved us. This command to love requires us to act in the same manner that He acted in love for us. He gave of Himself. He sacrificed His time. He emotionally invested in us. He died for us. If we will start really loving people and living out the 90° Rule, we must put our words and feelings into real action that makes a difference.
If you think that nothing would have changed, what does that say about the Samaritan?
What does that say about love?
How do you think the whole situation changed the way the person who got jumped felt about Samaritans?
Who have you treated like a Samaritan?
Have you ever walked by the hurting like the two religious guys in the story?
What changes for you NOW!?!

sold to pay off another’s debt. Ask your group to jot down lyrics or thoughts that grab you as you play the video.
Ask another volunteer to read Luke 4:14-21 aloud. These first public words of Jesus’ ministry tell us, and those who heard Him, what He was planning to do—the focus and purpose of His ministry. What is Jesus’ message? He referred to the Isaiah passage, and added the words of verse 21: “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” He came to make what is promised in Isaiah a reality.

Objective
Students will know the freedom they can receive through Christ.
Warm Up
Play a couple rounds of the old childhood favorite, Simon Says.
Transition
Many things have control over us, like “Simon” in the game we just played. What are some of the things that might be—or are—controlling you or people in your community? Some examples are popularity, addiction, parents, cults, debt, and sin.
The Video
Let the group know that this video comes from the soundtrack of a movie about human trafficking, which is a modern form of the slave trade. Slavery is not a thing of the past. Many men and women (young and old) are abducted or sold into different aspects of the slave trade every day. Some are sold to be sex slaves, others to be laborers in fields or in plants that produce many of the goods we consume and wear every day, and others are
Transition
In the song the artist sings, “You are worth more than gold, a love so worthy, it can’t be sold.” However, many people are still bought and sold today. This problem isn’t something that is happening overseas; it is also a problem in America.
Bible Study
The Bible says a lot about slavery. One of the major passages is Isaiah 61:1-3. Large portions of Isaiah are messages given to the prophet for the nation of Israel in exile. The people had previously known freedom, but in the time of Isaiah they were not experiencing it. Ask for a volunteer to read Isaiah 61:13 aloud. Then ask, “What is promised to the people?” (Good news to the poor, healing for the broken hearted, freedom for the captives, release for the prisoners, comfort for those who mourn, provision for those who grieve, and the coming of the year of the Lord’s favor.) “The year of the Lord’s favor” is a reference to the year of Jubilee, described in Leviticus 25:8-54 where many of the same promises are made to the people of Israel.

How have we received the things Jesus promised? How have we been freed? We have been freed from the power of sin over us in our lives. We are still stuck in it, but do not have to be defined by it or have it dictate who we are and how we live. As we let the freedom that we receive from Christ become what defines us, the things that seek to control our lives define us less, even when they are still present. How can we help those who are sold as slaves? How can we help others experience freedom? This big problem is probably beyond the scope of your organization, but raising awareness of human trafficking can help us to fight it. Find an advocacy group near you to help your group understand how it effects their community, and arrange for an expert to come and talk with your group/organization about what they can do. Encourage your group to continue to learn more about this horrible problem. Some helpful web

Ask the leaders of your organization about ministries they support that address this problem. Be sure to highlight them to your group. See if your group might talk to the leadership of your organization about starting a partnership in this area. Also, brainstorm how your group can help those in your community experience freedom.
Wrap Up
We cannot ignore this problem. It is a huge issue. Encourage students to seek to use fair trade products (those made without the benefits of trafficked humans) and to investigate how the clothes they wear are made. Close your time together in a prayer that thanks God for the freedom we have and how we have been set free, but also for those who are not free, that God may be with them, and that we may have the courage to try to help bring them freedom.
