part of their overall strategy. The question is whether this is this a good thing or a bad thing? I’d like to offer that events are neither good nor bad. It’s how they are planned and implemented that define their utility. When executed as part of a holistic youth ministry strategy, events can be an amazing component of healthy ministries. Absent this level of intentionality, events always run the risk of becoming tedious and time-consuming, even to the point of distracting students from the real, Christ-focused life change that should be driving your ministry philosophy.

A NOTE FROM ANDY

The focus of this YM360 Magazine is to help you think about planning events that are meaningful, Gospel-centered, and transformative for both your students and your ministry. For some of you, the articles here will confirm what you already know. For others, they will challenge you to rethink the way you plan your youth ministry events. Our prayer is that in some way, you’ll be challenged to plan youth ministry events that truly matter.

Quick: How many events do you have on your calendar in the next month? If you’re like most youth ministers, you know exactly what those events are. And depending on where you are in your event planning, this question either gives a great sense of satisfaction, or sends you into a panic. Events are a part of youth ministry. Whether it’s a weekend retreat or a mid-week color war, the overwhelming majority of youth ministries utilize events as

U.S. TEENS AVERAGE 9 HOURS OF MEDIA PER DAY

YOUNG ADULTS SPEND A LITTLE OVER 3 HOURS A DAY ON THEIR SMARTPHONES According to a recent study by TNS, a global research agency, the 16 to 30 year old spends 3.2 hours a day on their mobile devices: the equivalent of almost a whole day every week, or 49 days a year. Watching videos and online TV accounts for 46% of device time (with 76% engaging on a daily basis). Social networking accounts for 40% of millennials’ device time, while online shopping accounts for 14%.

ENERGY DRINKS MAY RAISE TEENAGE DIABETES RISK

1

A study by Common Sense Media found that teenagers use an average of nine hours of entertainment media per day, not including time spent using media for school or homework. Though media usage varies across demographics and devices, TV is still the most popular. Social media is an integral part of most teens' lives with 45% using it every day, but it lags behind use of music and TV (58%).

OLDER AMERICANS MORE DISTRACTED BY DEVICES AT MEALTIME THAN TEENAGERS The findings from a recent Nielsen global survey found that Baby Boomers were more likely to be on their devices during meals than were Millennials or Generation Z. 52% of Baby Boomers reported being on their devices during meals, compared to 40% of Millennials and 38% of Generation Z.

Caffeine-laden "energy shots" appear to trigger short-term insulin resistance in teenagers, Canadian researchers report. Teenagers who drank traditional 5-hour Energy experienced a 25 percent increase in both their blood sugar and blood insulin levels compared to when they drank the decaf version, the study authors said. According to Dr. Jan Hux, chief science officer for the Canadian Diabetes Association, the results are troubling because the teens' blood sugar levels did not decrease even after their bodies started producing insulin, the hormone that manages blood sugar.

WHY CAMP?

need to lay all present cares aside so He could be alone with the Lord. If Jesus Himself made an effort to have personal retreats like this, should we not be striving to provide similar experiences for our students? I have spent the last 15 summers of my life attending camp, working camp, or planning camp. I have seen thousands of lives changed through the proclamation of the Gospel while at camp. I have helped hundreds of youth workers prepare for camp. Camp means a whole lot to me. If a camp-like experience is missing from your youth ministry, I strongly encourage you to make a change. Now more than ever, students are bombarded with secular messages with hardly any getaway. Camp may be exactly what your students need to escape the stresses of this world, for just a moment, so they can see their need for a Savior.

Camp. For such a small word, there are so many feelings and emotions that come to mind. For many of you the word “camp” means a whole lot of money, time, effort and planning. The word “camp” might even mean added stress, or loss of sleep.

I really can’t form the words to explain how five days of camp can transform a life, but it does. Week after week, the lives of both students and adults are changed. God has used this tool called camp for years, and He still does today.

But I would guess that for most of us, camp has played a significant role in our spiritual formation. It has for me.

Why camp? Because it’s worth it.

For me, camp is one of the main tools God used to draw me closer to Himself. It was at a camp where I realized what it meant to have a relationship with my Heavenly Father. It was at camp where I understood I needed to trust God with my future. It was at camp where I saw the need to live with a missional mindset. It was at camp where my strongest friendships were formed, and it was at camp where I became comfortable enough to be open and honest with my youth pastor and Sunday school teachers. Even though many biblical lessons were taught from within the walls of my church, being at camp is what made everything click. Throughout Scripture, Jesus displays for us what it means to retreat from the noise of the world in order to spend time with our Father. In the middle of the time preaching to the masses and performing miracles, Jesus saw the

When students give their lives to Christ, the Bible is pretty clear: They. Are. NEW! But what does it mean to be NEW? What does it mean to see God in a NEW way? What does it mean to live out the call to follow Christ? These questions can be daunting ones in the lives of the new or "young" Christ-followers in your youth ministry.

FEATURE And so, when we consider all these issues, it becomes even more imperative that we get our events right. The good news? It is possible to plan events that are both a lot of fun, and packed with life-changing meaning. Here’s a few thoughts on how.

MEANINGFUL

EVENTS Events are an essential part of most youth ministries. Whether it’s a Fall Retreat, a Disciple Now Weekend, camp, or just a mid-week Color War, most youth ministry calendars have an event or two on them. (And many have nothing but events.) Events are a great way to build connection, create memories, provide a relatively safe way for students to try your ministry out, and are just great fun. BUT HERE’S THE QUESTION: IS IT ENOUGH TO JUST HAVE FUN? OR DO WE NEED TO SET A DIFFERENT STANDARD FOR OUR EVENTS? First things first: I’m no “fun Grinch.” Ministry should be fun and attractive. We work with teenagers, after all. When you think about your “career” regardless of length, likely some of the best memories have been with students just having a good time. There is a place for fun. But fun is not enough. If the only thing your events accomplish is entertaining your students, you’re wasting a ton of your time, energy and likely limited resources, as well as wasting a valuable opportunity for your students. It serves us well to remember that “life is a mist”; this is very true for the limited time we have with our students. Before you know it, they will be graduating school and their time with you, and they’ll be off to take on the world.

1. THE GOSPEL HAS TO BE PRESENT. I know there are some youth ministers who will do “no strings attached” events where, in order to not alienate first time, non-believers, they will offer no mention of the Gospel (or any spiritual content). While I understand the logic behind this, I respectfully disagree with the principle. I believe that we need to carve out space in any event to communicate the Gospel to our students. It’s that simple. If you want to connect with students in a “no strings attached” environment, you can stop by their school and grab a meal in the cafeteria. Or go by their games. Or attend one of their concerts. These are good things to do. And we should actively be engaging in our students’ lives outside of church. But the goal should be to use those connections to get students coming to events where the Gospel will be present. A great example could be found in friends that have had huge dodge ball or flag football tournaments that end up being their most evangelistic events of the year. The attraction is the event. The life altering impact is the presentation of the Gospel. 2. INTERACTION HAS TO BE INTENTIONAL. You have to create moments for intentional relational interaction between students and adults. If all the adults are in the back of the room, or on the sidelines, you’re missing key moments to create some awesome shared experiences between students and adults. Plan your events in a way that includes adults in the fun. Don’t be too quick to simply relegate them to transportation or cooking roles. Involve them in life-on-life interactions when possible. Every great youth leader understands he or she can’t do it alone. Investing in adults to expand the reach of your ministry is essential. Also, encourage or enlist them to be involved in the connecting process leading up to your events. It just takes a simple invite from, and interaction with, some of your adults to create real relational buy-in.

FEATURE Which might be the difference in a student becoming involved in your ministry or not. 3. BUILD TIME TO PROCESS. As much as you can, build in time at your events for students to process what they’re experiencing. In our good natured quest for max fun, we can schedule wall-to-wall activities. Instead, include some down time, or small group time, where students are allowed to reflect on what they’ve done or learned. If you have ever been around an adventure recreation environment you likely have seen this done as a part of the debrief element. This is a great strategy to use throughout your events. Taking a break and debriefing, or having some type of devotion that may even connect the dots for a student can go a long way. Say you go rafting, tubing, or some type of outdoor event. It is easy to just simply laugh and have fun together, but you can create a lasting moment with time in the Word at just the right break on a rock looking out of the river, around a campfire, or some other strategically placed opportunity. 4. MIX SERVICE WITH RECREATION. You can do both. I’ve seen it many times. Students appreciate the fun after serving, and vice-versa. Sometimes this can be as simple as having something at the end of a missions experience that that is a bit more playful. Or combining a day of serving in the community with a fun “come back” event that night, or ending it at someone’s home doing something together. At Servant Life, it’s normal at the end of an international missions experience to have a cultural day that offers time to reflect and relax from a week serving.

5

end (and even ask your pastor if he would wear one that Sunday), and try to get some opportunities to highlight what happened over the weekend. This can be done well with some select testimonies, through video, or both if you have those capabilities. This is a great option, as well, after a week of camp or missions. This also allows for your ministry to be able to better connect with the overall mission of the church. Knowledge is power, as my wife often says. Let your students share personal stories and it will impact your entire church. I would also mention that every great revival began with young people (and usually after the confessing of sin). Maybe this would be true in your community, as well. Events are awesome. But your students need more than a t-shirt collection to look back on when they leave your ministry. They need experiences that point them to Jesus. At the end of the day, He is the only one that can save and transform your students into a new creation. Our calendar full of events will never do that. It does take a strategy, but it doesn’t take much more planning to inject meaning into your events. And the payoff is huge. Possibly even eternal.

5. PROVIDE ROOM FOR PERSONAL STORIES. Consider creating space to allow students to share what Christ is doing in and through them. Or where God is convicting them. Or where they feel called to plug in. Having an organic, student lead element is super-empowering to other teenagers. At the end of your DNow weekend, have the students sit together wearing their shirts from the week-

This strategic partnership with YM360 will create a platform to better serve ministers across the country, and expand the geographical reach of this gathering to more locations. YM360 joyfully and willingly said yes at the chance to partner with me to make CLEAR more available to more leaders. These phenomenal people are a “band of brothers” to me personally, and have graciously rallied around me to launch this conference. Their heart is to create a quality experience for you personally. Our team is thrilled to be a part of these gatherings. They are a time spent learning to be an effective and clear communicator of God’s Word! If you want to be a better Bible communicator, CLEAR may be just the thing for you. I look forward to serving you in the near future. There’s a recent development that I’m pretty excited about. I’ve partnered with YM360 to launch the CLEAR Conference and www.PreachClearly.com. For the past several years, there has been a grassroots movement taking place in Memphis, TN and Orlando, FL. These cities have hosted a gathering of leaders seeking to sharpen their skills as clear Bible communicators. These short, intimate gatherings have been meaningful times of collectively pouring over God’s Word, highlighting essential truth, and learning to communicate that truth in a clear, and powerful way.

ARE YOUR VOLUNTEERS SERVING PEOPLE?

or YOUR EVENTS?

What if your volunteers never hand a meal to someone in another community, or lead another person to faith in Christ, or give medicine to the sick, or build a meaningful relationship with a student, all because they see their work supporting the various events at your church as satisfying their call to serve? Listen, I realize I'm overstating this concept a bit. I understand that people are served through our events. I also understand that volunteers have opportunities to serve outside of your ministry. But I’m overstating my case to make a point: When our first response to any crisis or opportunity is to think in terms of an event, as opposed to people, we may very well be perpetuating a system that creates volunteers who are quite removed from serving others through life-on-life interactions. What's the solution?

Part of it is changing our approach. A people-centered, There are a lot of blog posts and articles written that knock discipleship approach is almost always superior to an youth ministry events. WHY YOUR EVENT’S CONTENT IS SO IMPORTANT

9

I’m thankful that she took the time to share her heart with me that night. Even though it took a little time, I began to change how and what I taught on Wednesday nights. It started with me believing that students could handle much deeper truths about God’s Word than I often gave them credit for. Here are a few thoughts on how we can make sure we infuse our gatherings with transformative, Gospel-driven content. START WITH GOD’S WORD AND PRAY. When writing a message or creating a series, I start with God’s Word. I also try to remember to actually pray and ask God to guide me in the direction He’d like me to go. Although this seems like a no-brainer, we can get out in front of God sometimes. Not good.

[Consider This: A Guide To Longevity In Youth Ministry, by Chris Trent, is one of YM360’s newest releases. It’s an amazing little book, a powerful, practical, and insightful guide for anyone working in youth ministry. Below is an excerpt from Consider This, one that speaks to making sure we plan events that matter. For more info, head on over to ym360.com/considerthis.] Believe it or not, there was a time—when VeggieTales was new—that I would show episodes every so often to my youth group on Wednesday night. I’ll never forget the night my pastor’s wife happened to come to interpret for one of our hearing impaired kids. Afterwards she asked if she could talk with me for a few minutes. My pastor’s wife shared with me that she felt showing a VeggieTales video was not challenging our students very much. She believed that they needed more of a Bible study lesson. Being the incredibly wise 20-something I was, I proceeded to attempt to tell her how VeggieTales was, in fact, based on Bible stories and that the kids did hear the Bible story. First, stop laughing at me. Second, I realized she was right. I was naïve and I was wrong.

STUDY GOD’S WORD. Take the time to go deeper. Learn about context, language and original meaning, historical relevance, and how what you’re studying fits into the totality of God’s Word. If you haven’t gone to a Bible college or seminary, take an online class or buy a book. Just keep learning! FIND SOMEONE YOU TRUST WHO CAN GIVE CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. I’ve made it a habit to find people I can trust to give me honest feedback about my lessons. I ask questions like, “Do you feel the message is connecting with kids?” or “Any suggestions about how I can make the lessons connect with our students more?” The Lord trusts us to share His word with our students. I believe that His word is exactly what He says it is, sharper than any double-edged sword and life-changing. Let’s make sure our events are a place where His Word has room to do the work only it can do.

SILENCE the

UNDERAPPRECIATED

DISCIPLINE When we think of events, we rarely think of silence. But what if we did? Silence and solitude are two virtues almost completely undetectable in modern culture. There is a lack of quiet places, places to rest and listen, and spaces free from the constant buzz of humanity. Even for spiritually mature adults, silence is a difficult practice. Everywhere we turn, we are constantly encountering noise from every section of our life, something always vying for our attention. And most of it isn’t even bad. Silence has become so counterintuitive to how the world operates today. For our students, silence is almost completely foreign. And yet its value is immense. God’s Word is filled with encouragement toward keeping silent and listening to the Lord. Psalm 11:12 says, “Whoever belittles his neighbor lacks sense, but a man of understanding remains silent.” The Proverbs are all over silence, reminding us constantly things like, “better is a dry morsel with quiet than a house full of feasting with strife.” Richard Foster, noted expert on spiritual disciplines, has an interesting theory on why silence is hard for us: “Silence frees us from the need to control others . . . Silence is one of the deepest Disciplines of the Spirit simply because it puts the stopper on that. When we become quiet enough to let go of people, we learn compassion for them.”

CREATE A SACRED SPACE AT YOUR NEXT EVENT. I’m talking an actual, physical room where talking is simply not allowed. Lots of older churches used to have these crazy places called ‘parlors,’ which is some real Downton Abbey stuff. Find a spot that’s not being used and claim it as your own. Fill it with floor pillows, scripture cards, and some string lights. Encourage your students to use the room for prayer and silence. HOST A WEEKLY SILENCE MOMENT. Declare Tuesday mornings before school to be Silent Tuesdays. Invite students to drop by the church before they head to class to spend 30 minutes in quiet observation. Encourage parents to join and see how they might institute the same thing at home. PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH. As adults, we often set an example for our students, that being busy equates value. Thomas Merton said, “To allow oneself to be carried away by a multitude of conflicting concerns . . . is to succumb to the violence of our times.” Maintain a discipline of not filling up every single moment of your day and stop the glorification of busy. Richard Foster says that restriction enhances clarity. As part of your next event, give your students the gift of an oasis, a place where they can experience rest and simple quiet within the tumult of their lives, and watch them become more mindful of others, and most importantly, the presence of the Lord.

Wouldn’t it be an incredible thing if we could plan and execute an event that helped them reclaim this act of spiritual discipline? How can we do this?

LEAD TEAMS

At GENERATE, we believe in letting YOU CHOOSE what is best for your group. So, at every week of camp, you have 5 options to choose from for your group to take part in:

CONNECT

POPULAR

is a great option for community building within your group. Groups in this option (called “villages”) will be in Bible study for part of the day, and will also participate in recreational games, all led by your adult leaders.

SERVE

POPULAR

allows your group to get off campus and serve at a mission project for much of the day with one of our Community Partners (our team will take care of the details).

EXPLORE

allows you to decide how you want to spend your day from 10:00am through dinner. If you want to be off campus enjoying what the area has to offer, go for it!

GUIDE

Do you have adults who are willing to come to camp, but don’t want to teach the Bible study? GUIDE is for you. Instead of your adult chaperones leading your students in Bible study, recreation group building activities, and worship pre-gatherings, one of our Village Guides (a Generate staff member) will do so.

LEAD TEAM

One of the best ways to learn to be a disciple-maker is to learn alongside other disciple-makers, and LEAD TEAMS perfectly displays that. Your group (10th grade students and older please) will participate in staff devotions, meetings, development, worship, and areas of concentration such as production, recreation and support roles. (MAX of 20 people per week)

CHOOSE YOUR OPTION and REGISTER at GENERATESTUDENTS.COM

CAMP

THEME

ONE moment can define history. ONE decision can change a life. ONE person can start a movement. The power of one resounds through Scripture and this year at Generate, your students will travel through the Word to discover a powerful message that God has for them:

THERE IS ONE GOD. ONE WAY TO HIM. ONE FAMILY UNITED UNDER HIS BANNER. AND ONE MISSION WE’VE BEEN ENTRUSTED WITH.

THIS SUMMER, GIVE YOUR STUDENTS ONE EXPERIENCE THAT CAN CHANGE THEIR LIFE.

WHAT’S COMING IN 2016? He’s the co-founder and publisher here at YM360. If it's a blog post, resource, or workshop, has his hands have been on it. In 2003 he took a gig with a youth ministry publishing where his passions for God's Word and for creating intersected in a dynamic way. He’s the husband of his wonderful wife Brendt, and Daddy to their three daughters, and one son. He's a pretty big fan of both the Boston Red Sox and anything involving the Auburn Tigers. When he's not hanging out with his family or volunteering at his church's youth ministry, you can find him trail running or mountain biking.

MEET ANDY BLANKS

Recently Andy was sharing with our online community about some of the YM360 resource creating philosophy. Here’s some of what he said, “One of the ways we describe what we do at YM360 is to say that we are Gospel-centered. Whether it’s a Bible study curriculum, a discipleship resource, or a Summer camp, everything we do at YM360 is Gospel-centered. The “good news” of new life and new purpose through God’s grace shown through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection . . . this message is at the heart of all we do.”
