Youth & Government Model Legislature & Court (ML/C) for High School Students California YMCA Youth & Government’s Model Legislature & Court (ML/C) has been the state’s premier youth leadership and civic development program since 1948. The ML/C creates a six-month, learn-by-doing experience that teaches the values of democracy by bringing together a cross-section of the state’s high school students. This program provides them with the opportunity to experience government first-hand and to learn how to solve community problems through the democratic process as well as debate and discuss issues with peers from throughout California. Teens have weekly meetings starting around the first week of school, and have an adult advisor who meets the volunteer criteria of the local YMCA that the delegation is affiliated with, as well as any regulations set forth by the state office.
Model United Nations (MUN) for Middle School Students The North Valley Family YMCA offers the Model United Nations (MUN) program. Middle school students, called ambassadors, participate in the program with their peers. While engaged at the YMCA, they are given the opportunity to discuss international issues, discover other cultures, develop life-enhancing skills, and make new friends. The four-month program culminates when ambassadors from around the state meet at the YMCA’s annual Model United Nations Summit in Irvine, California. Teens have weekly meetings starting in January, and have an adult advisor who meets the volunteer criteria of the local YMCA that the delegation is affiliated with, as well as any regulations set forth by the state office.

But before her dream can come true, she will have to overcome Dr. Wicked’s evil scheme. With the help of Captain Character, his good friend Storm and the Character Crew, we can help her rise above any obstacles that may come her way. Week 5: July 7 – July 11 The world needs more people like Mother Theresa (not to mention a superhero team like Captain Character, Wonder Woman, and you!) Don’t let Dr. Wicked stop the Character Crew from making the world a better place one good deed at a time. Week 6: July 14 – July 18 Batter up! Jackie Robinson has the odds stacked up against him, no thanks to Dr. Wicked’s curveballs. Maybe a little training with Superman and Captain Character will help improve our chances of hitting the ball out of the park! Week 7: July 21 – July 25 It’s lights out for Dr. Wicked! Watch as Captain Character and Thor help Ben Franklin harness the power of electricity for good use and dazzle the world with light! Week 8: July 28 – August 1 When it comes to building the first engine, who could be of more help to Elijah McCoy than Captain Character and Iron Man? Don’t let Dr. Wicked take away Mr. McCoy’s steam to build this history-changing invention. Week 9: August 4 – August 8 Dr. Wicked wants to spoil the beauty of the great outdoors for us! Hopefully, Captain Character’s web-slinging superhero friend can save the day. Together, let’s help John Muir discover the miracles of nature at its finest!

This program’s slogan, “Pals Forever,” couldn’t be truer. By setting aside a special time for dads and their children, a bond is formed that will endure for years to come. Participants are formed into tribes with other fathers and sons, or fathers and daughters. These small groups (10 dads and 10 children) meet once or twice a month in the evenings and take part in a monthly weekend activity. In the small tribal group setting, children and their fathers share responsibility for planning and participation in various group activities including crafts, songs, games and weekend events. The various tribes form a larger group, The Nation, consisting of 12-15 tribes. Nation events, scheduled August through June, include weekends at Camp Fox (Catalina Island), Winter weekend at Camp Whittle (near Big Bear) and a Spring Family Campout. One-day events consist of Ice Skating Night, Granada Hills Parade, Cosmic Bowling and the Nation Picnic.
