Dear Friends, What a year it’s been for our Torrance-South Bay YMCA! With help from supporters like you, we have continued our diligent work to be SO MUCH MORE than a gym. Thanks to you, our Y has strengthened our community through programs and offerings such as: •
•
•
• •
before- and after-school child care, creating a nurturing environment for over 900 boys and girls during the school year, Youth & Government, empowering nearly 100 teens to develop their public speaking and leadership skills while taking part in the democratic process, our Aquatics department, teaching an estimated 1,300 children essential life-saving water safety and swim skills, summer day and resident camps, keeping approximately 4,500 youth engaged in enrichment activities while promoting friendship and building confidence, and our Adventure Guides, helping almost 1,300 parents and their children to bond through structured events.
In addition to welcoming more than 12,500 members to use our facility, our Y provided $871,062 in financial assistance so that deserving youth, seniors and families in our community may participate in our programs. For community,
Bob Shafer Sr Vice President / Executive Director Torrance-South Bay YMCA

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Children engaged at the Y learn the importance of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Our youth programs are so much more than just basketball leagues and swim lessons. By addressing challenges like the academic achievement gap, childhood obesity, and the diabetes epidemic, we give youth and families chances to grow, learn, and strengthen the communities in which they live.
INSPIRING FUTURE GENERATIONS After attending her first Youth & Government meeting as a sophomore in high school, Sara Kim was hooked. The process of creating bills and fighting for her beliefs awakened her love for advocacy; Model Legislature & Court (MLC: our Y’s program for high schoolers) taught her valuable skills in public speaking, collaborating, debating, and presenting. When asked about the best lessons she learned from her time with Y&G, Sara’s answer is clear: networking and leadership. She says, “I can confidently say that both my local Y and Youth & Government have not only taught me how to network, but given me numerous opportunities to start. As for leadership, there are endless plates to step up to”. Indeed, Sara’s resume from Y&G is decorated with a variety of leadership positions - board member for our Torrance delegation, statewide committee chair for Spring Conference, and Secretariat (a type of mentor) for our Model United Nations program. Today, Sara is a proud Y&G alumnus, lauding the positive impact of her experiences while serving as an excellent example of a teen leader in our community.

HEALTHY LIVING At the Y, we know that a thriving community is one that is healthy. Leading a balanced lifestyle means keeping physically fit, eating well, and maintaining a good work-life balance. Through long-standing offerings like our group exercise classes and new initiatives like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, we are doing our part to combat lifestyle related ailments such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and more.
CHANGE FOR A HEALTHIER FUTURE Stephen didn’t know where to turn. With a high blood sugar level and a significant amount of weight to lose, he knew he had to make a change in his lifestyle – but how? He made several efforts to eat healthier and even took cycling classes, yet nothing was giving him the results he needed to prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Then Stephen discovered our YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program. His cycling instructor suggested Stephen give our innovative program a try. Stephen and his fellow participants learned to address challenges they faced when trying to eat well and stay active. “The best things the program taught me were to do a weekly weigh-in and to keep a food log to track what and how much I ate,” said Stephen. These strategies, along with constant encouragement from his YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program leader, Isaac Gardner, and fellow program participants, led Stephen to successfully lose 15 lbs and reduce his hemoglobin A1c. Stephen now exercises frequently, makes better food choices and has adapted a healthier way of life. Thanks to the Y, Stephen now has the tools and confidence to make better choices so he can live a long and healthy life. 3
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY The Torrance-South Bay YMCA is so much more than just a building. Together with our members, volunteers, and supporters, our staff demonstrate the power of what we can achieve by giving back together. For nearly 70 years, our Y has addressed the changing needs of our South Bay community; current examples of this effort include our Military Family Support Program, Senior Nutrition & Socialization Program, and Annual Community Support Campaign.
LIFELONG WELLNESS Mercedes Temprano’s involvement with the Y’s senior program has been reciprocal to say the least. After leaving her marriage of more than 40 years, she initially found solace at her church. Once settled, Mercedes wanted to actively give back to the community. Fond memories of her children’s involvement in our parent-child program spurred her to seek out the YMCA. At the Y, she began volunteering three times a week for our Senior Nutrition & Socialization Program. While Mercedes was familiar with our community classes such as line dancing and hula, she fell in love with our membership classes such as salsa and zumba during our recent Senior Wellness Week. With guidance from Y staff, Mercedes was able to qualify for financial assistance so that she could continue to enjoy our healthy lifestyles classes. 4

WHY I GIVE When Chris Nakagawa turned 13, he began learning the family business—a pet food store in Los Angeles that catered primarily to people with horses, chickens, and ducks. He would race home from school, plow through his homework, and then hurry to Centinela Feed & Pet Supplies to assist his parents, Tom and Meiko Nakagawa. Today, Chris oversees 15 Centinela Feed & Pet Supplies stores in Southern California. As chairman and CEO, he continues to uphold the work ethic and dedication to his community his parents instilled in him many years ago. “My folks taught me to always take care of your customers in every sense of the word and always give back to the community,” he said. Chris and Centinela Feed & Pet Supplies support a number of local non-profit organizations, including the Midnight Mission, Heal the Bay, Los Angeles County animal shelters, and the Torrance-South Bay YMCA. Centinela’s first partnership with the Y began through a unique initiative to donate food for the pets of home-bound, low-income seniors in the City of Carson, providing a steady, free supply of food for their beloved companions. Centinela next offered to hold low-cost veterinary clinics at the Y facility on Sepulveda. Each quarter, members of the community are invited to bring their dogs and cats to the Y to be seen by the vet and receive discounted vaccinations and medications. Chris, a father of twins and a firm believer in the power of nature in children’s lives, also visited YMCA summer camp to witness first-hand the joys of our campers thanks to Centinela Feed & Pet Supplies’ generous sponsorship of a full cabin each summer. “I was very impressed with the great activities and mind-enriching experiences the Y offers our youth,” said Chris. “We’re so happy to be able to support our community, from the very young to our more seasoned individuals, through the cabin sponsorships, the vet clinics, and the home-delivered food,” Chris, a new TorranceSouth Bay YMCA board member, continued. “By teaming up with the Y, we know that Centinela is greatly improving the quality of life for our friends and neighbors right here in the South Bay.”
