Dear Friends:

At the Y, strengthening communities is at the heart of our mission. Whether you’re a member of our facility, give to our Annual Community Support Campaign, or volunteer in one of our programs, you can be proud of the work we have accomplished in the past year. As you browse through our Impact Report, we hope you will enjoy reading stories from individuals who have benefitted from being a part of the Y family.

Their stories are OUR stories and are evidence of our positive impact on the community.

Because of your dedication to the Y, we are able to touch the lives of countless seniors, children and families. Thank you for your commitment to our cause! Sincerely,

Robert G. Shafer Executive Director/Vice President

Steve Fechner Chair, Board of Managers

This year, our Torrance-South Bay YMCA was honored by the City of Torrance with the prestigious Torrance Advantage Award for Quality of Life Community Investor. 1

NURTURING OUR YOUTH

Guiding our future generations to becoming healthy, productive members of society is as important to our work today as ever before. The Y as an organization is well known for our efforts to nurture the potential of every child and teen, and your Torrance-South Bay YMCA is no exception!

BUILDING LEADERS DAILY

Hearing Shreyas Tirumala share his Youth & Government experience is enlightening. While describing a session with almost 3,000 other politically-minded kids as euphoric, he goes on to explain that this is one of the few programs in which teens can eagerly discuss topics as specific as helmet safety regulation and as obscure as the virtues of economic hegemony.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AT A GLANCE

• With 13 locations in Torrance, our before- and after-school child care sites enrolled 825 children, giving their parents peace of mind knowing their kids are well taken care of in a safe, nurturing environment. • Y Adventure Guides created unique bonding experiences for 1,386 parents and their children. • 1,357 kids learned the value of teamwork and physical fitness through our youth sports and recreation programs. • Our summer resident and day camps gave 4,838 youth the opportunity to gain independence, try new things, and make lifelong friends.

A surprising benefit has been the friendships he has made within the Torrance-South Bay delegation. He attributes this positive experience to “the tireless effort put forth by a staff of exceptional advisers. Not only are they understanding and wise, but they teach us so much more than I could have ever imagined about life and leadership.”

When asked to sum up his Y&G experience, Shreyas says, “One doesn't merely learn about how our state government works or the importance of civic duty; one learns how to be a moral person. Simply put, Youth & Government is absolutely amazing.”

PROMOTING HEALTHY LIFESTYLES

HEALTHY LIVING AT A GLANCE

In all program areas, the Y focuses on improving the health and well-being of our community. Our Healthy Lifestyle counselors and supportive staff provide the tools and encouragement necessary for individuals to reach their fitness goals.

• As one of the most frequented Ys in Los Angeles, we have engaged more than 15,330 households and hosted 517,533 visits to our fitness facility. • 7,984 individuals discovered the benefits of low impact workouts through water exercise classes and swim lessons offered through our Aquatics Program.

BETTER PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY Pete Chavez’s story is one of hope.

Just a few years ago, Pete was defeated. After enduring a series of financial hardships and physical ailments including back and knee problems, high blood pressure and anxiety, his doctor encouraged him to begin exercising. One of his friends told him to check out the Y.

On his first day, Pete could barely walk through the door. While he felt scared and insecure, the welcoming Y staff informed him of all the opportunities that are available to those like him seeking to be more active. Under the guidance of our Healthy Lifestyles trainers, his health slowly improved. Eventually, he became a regular around the fitness facility! Perhaps most surprising was that the better Pete felt physically, the better he felt emotionally. For him, the YMCA became more than a place to keep fit. He says, “The Y is my salvation. It’s like another world here – the staff is like medicine to me!” 3

HELPING EACH OTHER

At our core, the YMCA is centered around giving back and supporting our neighbors. Our work to foster social responsibility – whether through our Senior Nutrition & Socialization Program, Military Family Support Program, and Annual Community Support Campaign – illustrates our efforts to fulfill our cause and is what distinguishes us from other organizations.

DELIVERING ON OUR CAUSE

As a youngster in Wyandotte, Michigan, Ed Carmody was sponsored by the YMCA to attend summer camp where he enjoyed crafts, swimming, canoeing, and playing games and group sports.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AT A GLANCE

• Approximately 300 volunteers helped to raise more than $638,000 during our Annual Community Support Campaign. • As part of our work to ensure that EVERYONE has the opportunity to benefit from our programs and offerings, our Y provided $755,924 in financial aid to deserving individuals, seniors, and families. • Our community’s elderly benefited from more than 50,000 meals through our Senior Nutrition & Socialization Program which also encourages camraderie and friendship.

Who would have thought that decades later, Ed would once again be reunited with the Y – this time through our Senior Nutrition & Socialization Program. After being diagnosed with myelodisplastic syndrome, a condition in which he does not produce enough bone marrow, he found that he could not leave his house other than to receive his bi-weekly blood transfusion at the hospital. A visit from his sister in 2010 prompted him to sign up for our Home Delivery Program through our Carson Senior Site.

This unique offering is a lifesaver, providing homebound Carson seniors with hot, healthy meals on a daily basis. However, a nutritious, tasty and varied menu is just one of the benefits of our Home Delivery Program. Participants also build a rapport with their delivery person and look forward to their visits. Ed says, “I look forward to seeing my delivery person Robert every day. He’s quite nice and always on time.”

THE JOYS OF GIVING BACK Years ago, the Y played a key role in strengthening Carrol Meyer’s family. The oldest of three children, Carrol’s son Rick would hop on his bicycle every day after school, starting in his later elementary years and lasting through high school, and head to the local YMCA in Glendale. A single mother working full-time back then, Carrol says, “The Y was a God-send to me, knowing that my son was well taken care of every day.”

Carol’s son Rick heading to the Y!

That peace of mind extended into the summer, as Rick attended Y camp each year, eventually growing into a counselor himself at Camp Fox on Catalina Island. Carrol remains a firm believer in the value of the YMCA in “keeping kids out of trouble” and shaping young lives for the better.

After Carrol re-married, she continued her involvement in the community. Her Husband, Stan, was an active leader of numerous organizations throughout the area including the Redondo Beach Rotary Club and the Torrance-South Bay YMCA. When the new community center of our Y was being built, the Rotary Club and Carrol together made a significant gift in honor of all the good work that Stan had accomplished in his life. Today, Carrol remembers the Y’s constant presence in her family’s life with gratitude. She does not hesitate to return the support that she received when her family needed it most. Every year, through long-time Y champion Jerry Marcil, Carrol makes a generous contribution to the Torrance-South Bay YMCA’s Annual Community Support Campaign, knowing that the funds she gives will in turn help another family to thrive with the Y.
