BE PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER WESTSIDE FAMILY YMCA Program Guide Fall 2014

IT STARTS TODAY When you join the Y, you belong to a community of men, women, and children who strive every day to be healthy, confident, and connected. The Y is a non-profit like no other. Be a member of something special.

WELCOME!

The Y is a nonprofit like no other. Be a member of something special.

At the Y, strengthening communities is our cause. That’s why we’re here working with you every day, making sure that you, your family, and community have the resources and support you need to learn, grow, and thrive. With a focus on developing the potential of kids, improving individual health and well-being, and giving back and supporting our neighbors, your membership will bring about meaningful change not just within yourself, but in your community too.

When you join the Y you belong to a place where: • Parents find a safe, positive environment for children to learn good values, social skills, and behaviors. • Families come together to have fun and spend quality time with each other. • Children and teens play, learn who they are and what they can achieve, and are accepted. • Adults connect with friends, pursue interests, and learn how to live healthier. • Communities thrive because neighbors support each other and give back. • We all build relationships that further our sense of belonging and purpose. I’m a member because...

“When I joined the Y, for the first time in my life, I felt inspired and invigorated by exercise. The Y is now a heartbeat in my life. I am grateful for all the kindness and support I have experienced over all these years and know the best is yet to come.” – Ouhi (Stefanie) Uluhogian Y Member since 1995

Yes, you can afford it The YMCA is a non-profit organization that welcomes everyone, regardless of gender, age, race, faith, and income. You may qualify to receive assistance for you and your family to participate in membership and programs at a reduced rate.

There is no other volunteer organization quite like the Y. That’s because in 10,000 communities across the nation, we have the presence and partnerships to not just promise, but to deliver, lasting personal and social change. Each of our volunteers helps deliver the benefits of good health, strong connections, greater self-confidence, and a sense of security to all who seek it.

EDUCATION & LEADERSHIP Children and teens’ future success is fostered by caring adults who make them feel loved, competent, happy, and healthy today. That’s why Y staff and volunteers are also mentors and role models, sharing a part of this very important–but very inspiring– responsibility in helping youth realize who they are and what they are capable of acheiving.

YOUTH & GOVERNMENT™

Knowledge, character development, guidance, and encouragement to help youth develop and realize their potential LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT MODEL LEGISLATURE & COURT (ML/C) GRADES 9 – 12 The Model Legislature and Court (ML/C) is a statewide youth educational program involving more than 2,500 high school students in a nine-month hands-on experience. Since its inception, the program has used a variety of activities to build, encourage, and strengthen those life assets and character traits that will help high school youth become involved responsible adults, who are decent and respected citizens. The tool used is a high quality experiential and educational simulation based upon California’s state government. The program is very comprehensive, and its impact on the youth participants is dramatic. During the nine-month period, the teen delegates write bills, select governmental positions to role-play, attend statewide training conferences, and run for various elected offices. The program reaches its peak in Sacramento at the State Capitol with the convening of the five-day Model Legislature and Court. There, “real” government moves over and the teen delegates take over, using the historic halls, chambers, and offices of our State Capitol, Supreme Court, and Governor’s Office. LOCATION BRENTWOOD YOUTH HOUSE Dates Aug 19 - Mar 10 Program Fee $1650 Tues 6:30 - 8 pm (Monthly payment options are available.) For more information about Teen Programs please contact Dorian Roohi, Director of Teen Programs, at 424 465 5240 or DorianRoohi@ymcala.org.

SWIM, SPORTS & PLAY

Positive, fun activities that build athletic, social and interpersonal skills

The Y is the starting point for many youth to learn about becoming and staying active, and developing healthy habits they’ll carry with them throughout their lives. ADULT BEGINNING This level is appropriate for adults who desire to learn how to swim or for those who cannot swim independently. Basics begin with floating independently and correct body position in the water.

ADULT INTERMEDIATE This level is appropriate for adults who know the crawl stroke and can swim the length of the pool independently. Class skills vary according to the participants’ skill and goals.

LAP SWIMMING As you enjoy the relaxing nature of being in the water, you’ll be working two major muscle groups (arms and legs) simultaneously, while having less strain on the body than many other exercise forms. It also helps to elevate your heart rate and burn calories. Please see the Pool Schedule for designated lap swimming times and lane availability at the Welcome Center or online. ADULT RECREATIONAL These lanes are reserved for adults who wish to exercise in the pool without swimming laps. The space can be used for aqua jogging or other stationary exercises. Please see the pool schedule for designated adult swim times and lane availability at the Welcome Center or online.
